Last space at Devon Valley now operational New landfill cell opened

Stellenbosch Municipality opened a new cell of its local landfill on Tuesday (4 February), but the excitement comes with a warning as it’s the last available space at the facility.

According to Clayton Hendricks, senior manager of waste management, the lifetime of cells at landfills has shortened over time. “The aim is to have a cell last as long as possible, but the reality is that the time frame for each cell keeps getting shorter. We need the community’s help to look at minimising the waste brought to the landfill,” he explained.

Cell 1, 2 and 3 of the landfill on the corner of Adams Tas and Vredenburg roads is already at capacity. The first waste cell reached capacity around 1996. By 2013, cell 2 had reached full capacity, prompting the construction of cell 3. When cell 3 reached its limit in 2019, planning and development for cell 4 immediately commenced.

A 2017 feasibility study indicated that unlocking additional landfill space within Stellenbosch would save the municipality an estimated R1,5 billion in external disposal

costs, which is equivalent to about R2,1 billion today.

The new cell officially opened by executive mayor Jeremy Fasser this week is already in use and will provide 1,1 million cubic metres of air space for waste disposal. This will not only save residents and the municipality from having to transport waste to the Vissershok landfill close to Table View, but the almost R110 million investment in the Devon Valley landfill is only the beginning of what needs to be a greener and more sustainable waste management

plan. Municipal manager Geraldine Mettler said there is no other municipal land to create a landfill on.

All waste, from garden cuttings to e-waste, can be disposed of at the Devon Valley site with specialist areas on site to accommodate each type of waste. The hope is the new waste cell will operate for the next two decades.

According to the municipality, beyond cost savings, having a well-managed local disposal site presents additional advantages like curbing illegal dumping. “By

making disposal more accessible and affordable for residents, waste can be properly managed, preventing pollution of rivers, parks and public spaces,” the municipality said. Council will now look at interventions to help prolong the lifetime of the cell with source sorting – having residents sort their recyclable waste before municipal pick up – and turning waste into a saleable commodity to become an income stream for the municipality.

Fasser congratulated Hendricks and the waste management team for their work and commitment in completing the project despite challenges.

Best schools recognised

Five Stellenbosch schools were among the province’s crème de la crème honoured for their outstanding performances in the 2024 National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations last week.

The schools were invited to the annual NSC Awards Ceremony, which was hosted by the provincial education department and Premier Alan Winde at Leeuwenhof last Thursday (30 January).

Hoër Meisieskool Bloemhof, Rhenish Girls’ High School en Paul Roos Gimnasium were recognised for their academic excellence, and were named among the Western Cape’s top 20 schools, while Lückhoff High School and Kayamandi Secondary School were among the schools honoured for showing the greatest improvement.

HMS Bloemhof received four awards at the prestigious ceremony, including an award for being the second-best school in the province – an improvement from the fifth place it achieved in the 2023 exams. The school is also the only Afrikaans-medium school to place in the top five.

“It is an honour for our school to hold this position, but it speaks of hard work, perseverance and a commitment to excellence by Bloemhof’s learners and teachers,” said principal Maré Bosch.

HMS Bloemhof also received an award for the advancement of technical subjects and for achieving a pass rate of more than 95% over five years.

The school’s matric class of 2024 also achieved the highest average for Afrikaans home language.

possible.”

Paul Roos Gymnasium was named the 11th best school in the province, maintaining the position it achieved last year.

This year, the improved 2024 pass rate of Lückhoff High ensured that the Idas Valley school received two awards at the ceremony. Its 2024 matric class achieved an 81,2% pass rate, a 26,7% increase from the 54,5% it achieved in the 2023 exams.

Rhenish Girls’ High is also among the top five schools in the province, placing fourth and jumping two spots from the sixth place it achieved in the 2023 exams.

“Rhenish Girls’ High School is truly honoured to be placed fourth in the province. This achievement is a testament to the dedication and perseverance of the class of 2024, whose hard work has made this possible,” said principal Tracey Megom.

“We also extend our gratitude to our

exceptional staff, whose unwavering commitment has ensured that our learners reach their full potential. Without their support and guidance, such success would not have been

The school was ranked among the schools that achieved the greatest increase in its pass rate from 2023 to 2024, and was also recognised in the category for schools for the most improved pass performance.

Furthermore, Kayamandi Secondary was recognised for its academic excellence in the category for schools that showed the greatest increase in the percentage of candidates achieving subject distinctions from 2023 to 2024. A total of 77 subject distinctions were achieved by the school’s candidates in the 2024 NSC exams, compared to six subject distinctions which were earned in 2023.

Bringing hope to township learners

Learners of Kayamandi got a back-toschool boost this week with the help of their local councillor and community members.

Councillor Ayanda Tomose contacted local businesspeople and health-care organisations to help provide stationery and motivation to learners at Kayamandi Secondary School on Monday (3 February).

“When it is back-to-school time we like to check in with schools and find what is lacking and try to help,” Tomose said. “But this time I thought about how to address a common need and thanks to sponsors we could provide 300 learners with sanitary pads, stationery and lunch.”

iKhaya and Kayamandi primary schools were also beneficiaries on the day.

Along with the donations, Tomose also arranged for speakers from Right to Care and Nandi Roshe-Mhlakaza, parliamentary constituency office fieldworker, to share information and inspire the learners.

Kayamandi Secondary principal Maphelo Ntshanga believed the

investment in the school by locals would help bolster the young people.

“This session will definitely help inspire our learners,” he said.

“We have more than 1 000 learners and many come from backgrounds with limited resources.”

Ntshanga added the school community was very positive about the academic year, especially after the increase in matric results. The school had 253 candidates pass, improving the 2023 year’s pass rate of 65,6% to 85,8% in 2024.

“We are in a positive mindset and preparing to have even better results this year,” Ntshanga said.

Beauty Nazo, community healthcare worker, said it was important for Right to Care to be part of the day as young people often do not have vital information about healthcare.

“We are sharing information on TB and HIV as well as family planning. There is lack of information and we are here to have factual conversations with the teens and answer their questions.”

The internet provider Vumatel also attended, to share more on giving learners easier access to internet.

Zukisa Xegwana, local business development manager, said hosting a joint venture to reach learners is the first step to success. Working with communities is also important to Xegwana. “Ultimately, the aim is to help all Kayamandi schools have access to fast, unlimited internet access. Internet access was once thought of as a nice to have, but it has since become a basic need for learners. Our schools are no longer inferior.”

Tomose said, thanks to sponsors, he hoped to help more learners in future.

“This is the start and I hope to make it broader, bringing hope to our children.”

Dokter se studie oor servikale kanker bied hoop vir vroue

prevention of cervical cancer in South Africa”.

Die titel van haar PhD-studie was “Exploring options for the secondary

Being outsiders in our own town

Stellenbosch is in South Africa, yet South Africans are being pushed aside like second-class citizens in their own country. It’s not even subtle.

This whole “student town” excuse is just a cover for greed. Let’s be real – landlords and property developers don’t care about education or the next generation. They care about who pays the most. And foreign students, backed by international funds, and parents of the “rich” are a gold mine for them.

Meanwhile, the locals? The people who actually keep Stellenbosch running – the workers, the employees, the everyday South Africans – are struggling to find a place to stay.

And what’s worse, no-one is even questioning it. Everyone just shrugs and says, “That’s just how it is.” But why should that be? Why should we, or any South African, have to commute further, spend more money and deal with unnecessary hardship because Stellenbosch has turned into a playground for greed?

It’s infuriating! What makes it worse is that it’s all avoidable! There’s no real reason South Africans should fight for scraps while money-hungry landlords roll the red carpet out for foreign tenants. It’s a system built on exclusion. And honestly, it’s disgusting.

Optog lui ’25-oesseisoen in

“In baie gevalle is daar ’n daadwerklike verandering in

o.7-minikrieketspan gespeel.

“Krieket gee hom soveel meer as net sport.

FNB Varsity Cup 2025

The FNB Varsity Cup 2025 is set to be bigger, bolder, and louder than ever with the introduction of its newest and most dynamic personality –Enzokuhle. With his striking pink mane, fearless energy and undeniable rockstar attitude, “Enzo” is the official mascot for both FNB Varsity Cup and Varsity Shield, bringing his infectious energy to every game and every crowd. Born from the spirit of passion and perseverance, Enzokuhle, whose name means “to do great things” in isiXhosa, embodies everything the competitions stand for. Always in the thick of the action, whether it is leading a stadium-wide air guitar solo or hyping up the crowd with his signature dance moves, “Enzo” will shake things up. To celebrate his arrival, FNB Varsity Cup launched Mascot Madness, a nationwide takeover designed to get fans buzzing ahead of the tournament, on Monday (3 February) when university mascots across the country stepped up for bold, attention-grabbing challenges in their local communities, calling on the students and supporters to get behind their teams in a way that’s never been done before. Pictured are all participating universities’ mascots with Enzo and FNB Varsity Cup founder and CEO, Francois Pienaar. The 2025 FNB Varsity Shield kicks off on Friday 14 February, followed by the FNB Varsity Cup on Monday 17 February.

Ligakroon wink vir Coronations

Vroue kraai koning

moes elke wedstryd speel.

Homeground advantage

Stellenbosch FC marked their longawaited return to the Danie Craven Stadium in triumphant fashion last Tuesday (28 January) by securing a 2-1 victory over Kruger United in the Nedbank Cup Round of 32.

The match was Stellies’ first at their homeground in 177 days and goals by Langelihle Phili and Devin Titus saw the club record a comefrom-behind win to progress to the next stage of the domestic cup competition.

The win against Kruger United set the tone for a busy week, as Steve Barker’s side took to the pitch again just four days later in the Betway Premiership, where they were held to a 1-1 draw by Sekhukhune United on Saturday (1 February).

“It was special to be back at the DC this week, on a special field and in front of our special supporters,” Barker reflected. “It had been a while since we last played in front of our home support, so it was really exciting to be back.”

Stellenbosch FC will be in action again tomorrow (Friday 7 February) when they welcome Kaizer Chiefs to Athlone Stadium for a highly-anticipated league encounter.

Tickets for the match are on sale at R70 from Webtickets and Pick n Pay outlets.
