yamandi plaas. Net meer as R31 miljoen is opsygesit om elektrisiteitskabels te vervang, wat Fasser as ’n voortslepende probleem uitgewys het.

WATER

Op die foto bekyk twee besoekers Nandele Maguni se The Thin Line Between Life and Breath, wat by die Oude Libertas te vinde is.

Sokkerklub neem VDS-terrein oor

Police are called to Klapmuts High again

Another incident at Klapmuts High School on Thurday 27 March required police intervention after two learners allegedly engaged in a dispute over a game being played on the school premises.

The altercation, however, was superficial and did not involve serious physical contact.

According to police spokesperson Sergeant Madilyn Dombas, Klapmuts High has recently been under the spotlight after two stabbing incidents involving learners occurred. One was in 2024, when a learner was stabbed in the back and the other recently, on Tuesday 25 February, when a Grade 10 learner apparently stabbed a peer.

The recent incident prompted a public meeting at the school, which was organised by the school-governing

body. Local police officials were also invited to the meeting, which saw numerous parents voicing their concerns and fears around their children’s safety.

“On [27 March] the Klapmuts police received a telephonic complaint regarding a fight at Klapmuts High,” Dombas related.

“On the police officers’ arrival at the school, a teacher said the fight arose from a disagreement over turn taking while playing games on the school premises. It was one group’s designated turn, but another group also attempted to play, leading to the conflict. The learners involved are from different grades. This incident is unrelated to the previous one that occurred in February and was solely a physical altercation, not a stabbing.”

Kerry Mauchline, a spokesperson for the provincial education department, confirmed they are aware of the incident.

“No stabbing incident occurred at

Klapmuts High on 27 March,” she said.

“A scuffle among learners during a soccer game was promptly addressed by the principal and staff. However, the situation soon escalated when parents and community members scaled the school fence, causing chaos and requiring police intervention [after which the Klapmuts police] escorted the community members from the school.”

Since these incidents the department has provided support to the school, including:

• support from the Inclusive and Specialised Education Support (ISLES) team for learners and staff;

• safety risk assessments and assistance from the Safe Schools subcomponent; and

• controlled access points, morning searches for dangerous weapons, and improved access control measures.

Sassa gold cards still good until end of May

Beneficiaries who have missed the cutoff date to replace their gold Sassa cards now have a grace period, until Saturday 31 May, to make the move to ensure they receive their grants.

Postbank’s CEO, Nikki Mbengashe, announced, after the previous extended deadline of 20 March had come and gone.

According to the Western Cape Department of Social Development (DSD) the public has reached out to it for clarity on the extension as “people simply do not know what to believe anymore.” This comes after the South African

Security Agency (Sassa) announced that the gold version of the card, through which beneficiaries access their social grants, will need to be upgraded to a card from Postbank.

“In the course of April and May [beneficiaries] can either change to the Postbank black cards or change the payment method at a Sassa office to a bank of their choice.

“Those with gold cards have been asked not to go to a post office to withdraw their grants,” Western Cape for Social Development Jaco Londt empha-

sised. He urged beneficiaries not to wait to make the switch from the gold card to Postbank’s black card.

Londt also confirmed he would meet with officials from both Sassa and Postbank in the hopes of getting the two entities to improve their public communication about the switch.

“We urge residents not to wait. Please make the change as soon as possible, to avoid added pressure on the system. We also urge Postbank to step up its card issuing tempo,” he said.

Artists work live at open-air expo

The last month of the open-air free gallery in the City of Oaks is still open, and visitors and locals have until Wednesday 30 April to experience the 2025 Stellenbosch Triennale.

BA’ZINZILE: A Rehearsal for Breathing sees various multidisciplinary art installations in and around town. The works of various emerging artists, for instance, are displayed at Oude Libertas, while more established artists’ works are up at the Rupert Museum and the Stellenbosch University Museum this year.

Chief curator Khanyisile Mbongwa invited 16 artists to work on site to create their works, which range from sound installations to sculptures.

The In The Current exhibit includes Alexandre Kyungu Mwilambwe (Democratic Republic of Congo), Aline Motta (Brazil), Aziz Hazara (Afghanistan), Lebohang Kganye (South Africa), Simphiwe Ndzube (South Africa), Torkwase Dyson (USA), Thierry Oussou (Benin) and William Miko (Zambia). The featured artists in On the Cusp include Astrid González (Colombia-Chile), Helen Zeru (Ethiopia), Kasangati Godelive Kabena (Democratic Republic of Congo), Manyaku Mashilo (SA), Nandele Muguni (Mozambique), Simphiwe Buthelezi (SA), Takunda Regis Billiat (Zimbabwe) and Tuli Mekodjo (Namibia).

Maguni's Thin Line Between Life and Breath is a sound installation made up of recordings of breath, synthesized drones and environmental sounds on cassette tapes. Visitors are invited to explore the impermanence, presence and the ways in which sound embodies memory.

The artists work all speak to deeply personal yet universal themes such as loss, displacement and the urge to remember those who have come before.

For Mekondjo this meant looking back and honouring the women who lived, took care of children and kept their families together during the the German colonial era in Namibia (1884-1919).

Her installation “Eshina lyo ku topa topa/Typewriter” includes a shrine of dry food items, such as mahangu and eendunga, that were collected during the colonial period and housed in the Berlin Ethnological Museum for centuries. The shrine resembles a traumatised cell, reflecting the impact of colonialism on traditional food practices and cultural identity.

According to organiser Andi Norton part of the brief for the artists was to

create work that could be recycled and live somewhere else.

Walking tours are available for visitors and is really the best way to experience the art. The Triennale is a collaborative effort and the brainchild of NPO Stellenbosch Outdoor Sculpture Trust (SOST).

Visitors recently received an extra treat when Venice Biennale 2027 and Zeitz MOCAA Executive Director and Chief Curator Koyo Kouoh was in conversation with Pulitzer prize-winning author Dele Olojede. Kouoh spoke on the growing pains of the Zeitz MOCAA, the importance of art in Africa and the greater need for the public's involvement with art. Her work, much like the 2025 Stellenbosch Triennale, focuses on African works.

“This continent of ours is the most creative, the richest, the most important, where everything will always go off from. Life started here and will always be here.”

Kouoh urged locals and others, even those not aware of Africa’s significance as the source of meaningful life, to engage especially with the art produced in their locale. “Your immediate locality is your most important audience, collaborators and supporters. Zeitz MOCAA can not be in Cape Town without the support of Capetonians, and that is in the greater Cape Town.”

The Stellenbosch Triennale runs up until Wednesday 30 April at Oude Libertas, the Woodmill, Rupert Museum and Stellenbosch University Museum. Entry is free. For more information, visit www.stellenboschtriennale.com.

New toilets for Speelkring

Little ones of Speelkring Pre-Primary in Ida’s Valley recently benefitted from an upgrade of its facilities, thanks to a local business.

The school’s 57 learners received a generous donation from Plumblink, and those in after-care now have bathrooms. According to principal Monique Timmey, the upgrade was essential and the children now have functional toilet seats and flushers.

She added the new facilities will help the little ones understand and learn to use the toilet daily, which is a vital part of their growth and development.

Speelkring was established in 1959 and moved to its current home in 1980. New management took over in February 2023, following the school’s closure in the Covid-19 pandemic.

Since then things have been up and running. Part of this was getting the facilities to a safe standard.

“We initially received a quote for only

the toilet seats and two cisterns, which came to approximately R7 000, a cost we could not afford. Therefore, we sent a donation-request letter to Plumblink, hoping it could assist us.”

The Stellenbosch branch manager visited the school and recognised that many more items needed replacing.

“We never enquired after the cost, as we were simply grateful for the company’s generosity in donating the products to our school,” Timmey said.

The school’s management said it was grateful for the investment in the school, as it would make a significant impact on the lives of our children. The support is deeply appreciated it.

Along with the donation of hardware, Plum Guarantee jumped in to install the new toilets free of charge.

“Clean and functional bathrooms are essential for promoting hygiene and improving health for both children and staff. Well-maintained bathrooms help reduce the spread of germs, bacteria, and illnesses, creating a safer environment for everyone.”

The school also thanked Intaba Constructions and Eikestad Maintenance for their donation to the school.

Munisipale huise

It took a true village to make S’tha

Yes, it's a story of triumph over very difficult circumstances and never giving up hope. But ultimately, it’s about ubuntu, about a group of people who came together across divides to show what magic can happen when we open our hearts to give graciously and receive graciously.

At the beginning of 2024 S’thabile Duma faced what she thought were almost insurmountable challenges. She had no idea how she was going to get through her final year of industrial engineering at Stellenbosch University (SU).

In the first week of February Duma had no place to stay and she feared she would not be able to register due to outstanding debt.

The housing crisis had reached a peak in Stellenbosch and, like many desperate students, the young woman was literally knocking on doors, begging for accommodation.

She walked the streets for kilometres in the scorching February sun searching for a place to stay, struggling to hold back the tears.

A little more than a year later, Duma allowed the tears to flow freely, but for a very special reason.

This time she cried for joy and profound gratitude, as she celebrated obtaining her degree with her new Stellenbosch “family”.

When Duma needed support most Ben and Jeanneret Momberg opened their hearts and home to her.

PASSIONATE ABOUT HELPING Duma had always been very self-reliant. “I’m someone who doesn't like to worry people; I try to sort things out for myself. But this time I had run out of ways to save myself.”

Her despair last year, in a way, was ironic since she’d been a dedicated volunteer with Action4Inclusion, an initiative steered by SU’s Centre for Social Justice to support the “missing middle” students, to close the gap between talent and financial need.

“For three years I had been helping others clear their student debts, finding ways to raise funds through organising events such as the annual Social Jus-

tice Walk. In all that time I didn’t want anyone in the Action4Inclusion group to know of my own struggles. I always found a way to pay my fees by knocking on the doors at SU’s Development and Alumni Relations Office, student finances and the engineering faculty, which assisted with such things as bursaries and accommodation.”

But when she could see no way out of her situation, and was ready to give up and return home to KwaZulu-Natal, she confided in a friend. A few calls later the wheels were put in motion by Action4Inclusion’s team.

“I remember Prof Thuli Madonsela, the director of the Centre for Social Justice, calling me in the late afternoon, very concerned. She was hurt I had not said something sooner. She assured me she would do her best to reach out to the community and find help for me.”

The first lifeline came from a friend of Madonsela who offered to assist with the outstanding debt. “I was completely overwhelmed when it dawned on me that I could now register. I still struggle to find the words to express my gratitude.”

Duma received a call from Jeanneret, offering her a place to stay on her family farm near Stellenbosch. “It came as a huge relief. Initially the plan was for me to stay for a few weeks while I looked for something permanent.”

Jeanneret had also been involved with Action4Inclusion for a few years. When Madonsela connected her with Duma, the Momberg family wa still reeling from a tragedy.

At the end of 2023 Jeanneret and Ben’s son Benje was shot by armed robbers at a pub in Stellenbosch and left paralysed.

At Duma’s graduation party Momberg movingly shared how in a few short weeks she had become like a daughter to them. She paid tribute to the “ray of sunshine” Duma was, one shining in on the family at a difficult time in its life.

“We all just fell in love with her,” Jeanneret declared.

Duma’s temporary living arrangement with the Mombergs soon turned permanent.

She admitted she initially struggled with preconceived ideas of white Afrikaans people. When Ben offered to give her a lift to town on the first day of class, she was nervous.

“As I waited in the parking area I

thought ‘what have you got yourself into?’ When Ben came out he said ‘Hi S'tha’ and opened the door for me. Nobody had ever done that for me! Ben turned out to be the sweetest, kindest man I’d ever met.”

Duma later found out he didn’t really have to attend to business in town as he had claimed, but went out of his way to take her to campus every day. “He did it with so much devotion and care. I will never forget it.

“I had never experienced such love from people I didn’t know. They are such a cool, inspiring family. We often sat at the dinner table together. Sundays were my favourite because it was most likely braai time.

“During exam time I was spoilt rotten. Jeanneret made sure I had a big breakfast with eggs for my ‘thinking juices’. She asked what I wanted for lunch, and when I arrived home dinner was waiting in the microwave.”

PAYING IT FORWARD

Looking back on past year, S’thabile was reminded of a famous quote associated with Madonsela, that “it takes a village to raise a child”.

“I saw that and experienced it. All these people came together to help me, and it has changed my life forever. Because of this community I am now a graduate.

“I share my story not only to express gratitude but to urge people to keep giving. Even if you don't have money to donate you can share your resources or your time. I plan to pay it forward and help others whenever I can."

This weekend the Mombergs will help their erstwhile house guest move into a new flat in Cape Town, where she will soon start work.

“Being part of S'thabile's journey is a true blessing," Momberg said. “Her story is a beautiful expression of ubuntu, of what's possible when we support one another. Helping a bright young woman realise her potential is a privilege. We want our young people to dream big, to rise above their circumstances, and to know they are never alone.” S'thabile and Jeanneret encourage people to donate to the Action4Inclusion initiative at https://socialjustice.sun.ac.za/projects/ action4inclusion/.

United in football

A family and registration day, hosted by Idas Valley and Nelsons football clubs at the Idas Valley Sports Ground on Saturday 8 March, was a roaring success and one to to remember, as the community showed their support in large numbers.

The joint event was the first of its kind, where young and old enjoyed the football on display. Players from under-9 to over-35 took to the field, as well as special matches from the women, over45s and legends.

On the packed stadium the community had the opportunity to enjoy the football action of their hometown heroes. The day was made extra special with the sponsorship of two playing kits by Forwardzone through the kind gesture of Ashley Kotzin. The sponsorship was welcomed by both clubs and the comfortability and sleek design was the highlight for both clubs’ players.

Legends of both clubs were also honoured on the day with a special ceremony to show respect and appreciation for what they have done for their respective clubs and the community.

The fun-filled day ended without any incidents on and off the field – a testament that sport can unite a community and people from different backgrounds, they organisers say.

Special thanks was extended to the local organising committee, both clubs’ executive committees, the Idas Valley Sports Board, sponsors, players, coaches and everyone who lent a hand to make the day possible. Both clubs also thanked the fans for showing their support, as “without you, the day wouldn’t have been a success”.

The organisers say they look forward to similar initiatives in the future. The initiative was driven by the idea and slogan “building a stronger community together”.

Apply now for e’Bosch Fest

Music makers, dancers who can shake it and other artists can now apply to take part in die annual e’Bosch Festival of Talents.

“The e’Bosch Festival of Talents 2025 is not only about job creation and finding great talent in our communities, but also about creating a platform for future leaders who can empower and inspire their communities to attain greater heights,” says Marthie Hauptfleisch, music director for this year’s festival and an accomplished singer and songwriter.

“Finalists are expected to attend workshops designed to equip independent artists with essential stage etiquette and insights into the challenges of building a successful career in the music industry. The festival is nevertheless a showcase for talent, whether it’s including singing, poetry, storytelling, stand-up comedy, or original creations.”

The e’Bosch Festival of Talents, presented on Heritage Day in September each year, is the pinnacle of the e’Bosch Heritage Project’s 40 events.

All the Stellenbosch and Franschhoek

communities, or 16 “dorpies”, are invited to show off their talents and skills in performing arts, food, and crafts.

“The benefits to performers are immense. Each participant gains expert training in stage skills, performance techniques, and professional etiquette,” Hauptfleisch adds.

It is easy to enter: submit a three-minute demo video (max 50 MB, portrait format) for consideration by a panel of judges. The competition is open to artists aged 16 and older, with preference for those in the Franschhoek and Stellenbosch districts. The competition welcomes entries across various categories, including music (contemporary, gospel, jazz, hip-hop), poetry, storytelling, standup comedy, and original works.

Entry costs R100, and forms are available online at https://forms.gle/y3hQHxcUSUkWHsBj6 or via the QR codes on e’Bosch Talent’s TikTok (@eboschtalent), Instagram (@ebosch_heritage_project), and Facebook (/eBoschHeritageProject). For more details, send an email to talent@ebosch.co.za.

Suidoosterfees byna hier!

A wrestle with the past

The multi-award-winning production Isidlamlilo/The Fire Eater is set to enthral theatregoers at the Baxter Flipside in Rondebosch for a limited season from Wednesday 9 to Saturday 19 April. The electrifying and highly acclaimed one-woman show is brought to life by Mpume Mthombeni and theatremaker Neil Coppen. Set in a women’s hostel in downtown Durban, 60-something year old Zenzile Maseko (Mthombeni) is a grandmother partially disabled and declared dead by the Home A airs’ decrepit system. It is within the confines of this cramped room that Zenzile reckons with Nkulunkulu (God), recalling the unbelievable series of events that have unfolded across her lifetime. It is soon revealed that she operated as one of the IFP’s most feared assassins in the build-up to the 1994 South African elections. It’s a past Zenzile has spent most of her adult life trying to erase, praying that her sins will be forgiven. However, when Home A airs mistakenly declare her dead and are unable to reverse the error on their system, she finds herself cast into the middle of a Kafkaesque nightmare, forced to reawaken that vengeful spirit to secure her survival. The production will be staged daily at 19:30 with matinees at 14:00. Tickets can be booked online through Webtickets or at any Pick n Pay store.

High school bands call

The Band Battle is a chance for high school bands to turn up the volume of your truth, get a gig going, get some hard cash in your pocket and just jam your heart out with your buddies!

The competition will be presented by Curro Durbanville High School on Friday 27 June, and all high schools in the Western Cape are invited to enter.

The competition is part of the school’s Kultura Festival, which runs at the school campus from Friday 20 June to Friday 27 June.

“Our school has a cultural heart and would like to draw on The Band Battle to help setting up bands everywhere, in towns and cities, and giving them a platform to make music. We hope this competition, which is the first of its kind for Curro Durbanville High School, becomes an annual institution that stimulates creativity and camaraderie,” explained organiser Deon van Zyl.

One of the competition’s many attractions is that there are no guidelines, while each band has room to showcase its own skills, make music in its own style and with its own choice of instruments. “We have already received an entry from a band that even uses a cello,” Van Zyl added.

The top 10 bands will be invited to an audition, after which the three best groups will go through to the final to shake things up on stage during The Band Battle concert on 27 June.

The three finalists will perform

in the pre-show, with rock legend Francois van Coke, who is also the head judge, and his full band closing off the night as the main attraction.

The winning band will receive R10 000 in cash along with a 60-minute performance at Die Boer Theatre in Durbanville. Entries, which include an audition video of one song, close on Thursday 24 April and are available online at www. curro.co.za. Alternatively, send an email to Hanchen le Roux at hanchen.l1@curro.co.za for more details.

The Kultura Festival will also include the staging of productions from beloved artists such as Sandra Prinsloo, Marion Holm, Barry Hilton and Early B, the brand-new Nou praat jy! speech contest and a wine festival showcasing the wines of the region. Tickets for all the shows and the festival are available online through Quicket.

PRG takes the spoils

The under-19A soccer team of Paul Roos Gymnasium enjoyed a great run at the Reddam House Constantia Soccer Tournament from Friday 21 to Sunday 23 March. The team were crowned champions following their 5-4 penalty shoot-out win over Bergvliet High School in the final. The team started off the tournament with a 2-1 victory over Bridgehouse on day 1. The second day saw them claim victory over Wynberg Boys’ High (1-0) and they suffered a 0-2 defeat at the hands of Bergvliet High, but still qualified for the semifinals against Rondebosch Boys’ High – an encounter which they won 1-0. The final against Bergvliet ended goalless after regular time, but accuracy from the penalty spot saw the team from Stellenbosch claim the tournament spoils.

Paul Roos klop HTS Drostdy

Business end of 2025 FNB Varsity Cup

Maties set to host Shimlas

The round-robin stages of the 2025 FNB Varsity Cup have ended and the semi-finalists have been decided.

FNB Tuks will host FNB UCT in the first semi-final at 16:45 on Monday 7 April, followed by the second play-off between FNB Maties and defending champions FNB UFS Shimlas at the Danie Craven Stadium at 19:00. The men from Stellenbosch delivered a commanding perfor-

mance in their outing against FNB Wits in Johannesburg on Monday evening (31 March).

The visitors secured a dominating 7-49 victory at the Wits Rugby Stadium, delivering a brilliant defensive effort in the first half, keeping Wits scoreless while racking up a 0-21 lead.

Despite their best efforts, the home side couldn’t put any points on the board, as the Maroon Machine ran rampant.

FNB Wits were once again

guilty of too many errors, which kept them pinned in their own half. Maties hooker Erasmus completed his hat-trick in the second half, while Wits finally got on the board at the death through replacement loose forward Risima Khosa, with Tireque Apolles adding the conversion.

By the final whistle, it was the Maroon Machine that walked away with their heads high after a resounding victory.

Pushing boundaries at Absa Cape Epic

Former middle-distance running stars Michael Meyer and Hans van der Veen completed the demanding eight-day Absa Cape Epic race, which concluded at Lourensford Wine Estate in Somerset West on Sunday 23 March.

The event is renowned as the pinnacle of mountain-bike stage racing, combining elite competition with breathtaking scenery and a profound sense of accomplishment.

Meyer, the founder and managing director of Stillwater Sports and a resident of Stellenbosch, is the visionary behind the successful Absa Run Your City Series.

Oudtshoorn resident Van der Veen (59) ran a sub-four-minute mile (3:58) in 1985 and still holds two junior South African middle-distance records.

Originating from George and

Oudtshoorn respectively, Meyer and Van der Veen share a long-standing friendship that led them to take on the Absa Cape Epic together as Absa RYC, in the Grand Masters category. Watch them speak about their inspirational journey at https://youtu. be/EPx-2ivsbjc.

Rally behind runners in charity challenge

One of the Cape’s most beloved fundraising events will again take place on Table Mountain on Saturday 10 May.

The Cableway Charity Challenge 2025, hosted by Table Mountain Aerial Cableway (TMACC), calls on the public to be a part of the action by cheering on participants, pledging your support through generous donations, and enjoying a day on the mountain.

On the day, individual athletes, schools and corporate teams will hike Platteklip Gorge as many times as possible between sunrise and sunset, to raise funds for four beneficiaries: Ubuntu Football, Funda Kunye, Volunteer Wildfire

Services (VWS) and Wilderness Search and Rescue (WSAR).

Since its inception in 2009, the event has raised millions for local charities.

TMACC is urging the public to support participants as they strive to reach the R1 million fundraising goal on the day.

“The Cableway Charity Challenge is a highlight on the city’s trail running calendar,” said Selma Hercules.

The public can show your support by pledging funds to a participant of the challenge, making a general donation, or simply joining in the excitement on the day.
