Stellenbosch police looks at precinct’s crime

Busy year for cops

Petty crime, kidnappings and attacks on farms all made for a busy year for Stellenbosch police in 2024, but according to Brigadier Sandile Sonjani, commander of Stellenbosch Police Station, there are plans to address these worrying trends.

Last year Stellenbosch made national headlines for various serious crimes in and around the town.

On Thursday 3 October at approximately 02:40 a woman (20) was outside a restaurant in Plein Street when an unknown vehicle with two occupants stopped and kidnapped the victim. She was later released after her family paid a ransom.

‘A NICE PLACE TO BE’

The two suspects were charged with her kidnapping as well as extortion. Later in the month there was more trouble with the murder of Stellenbosch University student Jesse Mitchell. The

19-year old was found dead in Borcherd Road.

Sonjani says a part of combating crimes in relation to students is personal responsibility.

“Stellenbosch is a nice place to be, but we must remember the criminals also come here to ‘study’ and do calculations. They see the relaxing atmosphere here and they pounce. We appeal to students to understand the crime situation in general and be alert for criminals in Stellenbosch.

Policeman abandons bail application

Yaël Malgas

In a packed courtroom, the family of 41-year-old Vuyokazi Nyamanda and Khayamandi residents heard that the Hawks member accused of killing his wife, had abandoned his bail application.

Warrant officer Monwabisi Nyamanda (43) appeared in the Stellenbosch Magistrates’ Court on Friday 24 January, on the count of murder after his arrest in December. According to reports, the Hawks member and his wife had an argument on Saturday 21 December.

It is believed Vuyokazi had fled from their home to neighbours on the fatal day. It is believed Monwabisi followed and shot at his wife 18 times in full view of neighbours.

The post mortem also found she had stab wounds, said Eric Ntabazalila, provincial spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority.

The wife succumbed to her injuries and was certified dead at the crime scene by paramedics, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID)

From Page 1

“Criminals move among us and they are never too far and pounce at the opportune time, like when students carry expensive gear,” he explains.

“We want to deal with it now, in the beginning of the year, head on – we find young people are overdoing it while enjoying themselves after classes, when they are out in the clubs. We urge students to walk home in groups and

said in a statement.

According to IPID, 10 spent cartridges and two bullet points were collected at the crime scene.

Vuyokazi’s family were visibly emotional in court.

Outside the court, a cousin of Vuyokazi said the family is still in shock after the brutal killing. He added that the family are satisfied that Monwabisi decided not to apply for bail as “jail is were he should be”.

Community members were also eager to learn about Monwabisi’s fate and filled the courtroom to capacity, with many standing as he appeared.

Local NGO Stellcare submitted a petition with almost a thousand signatures of residents urging the court not to grant Monwabisi bail.

It appears there might have been a history of gender-based violence (GBV) between Vuyokazi and her husband, as Vuyokazi had apparently contacted the police on previous occasions, but had never made an official statement, Ntabazalila said.

According to Brigadier Sandile Sonjani, station commander of Stellenbosch police, GBV is an ongoing

we are in touch with campus security to assist students.”

Sessions with students on social crimes have already been held, Sonjani adds. Along with directly speaking to students, talks with management of tertiary institutions and campus security are also on the books.

There are however challenges. Police are in talks with campus security about clubgoers, but security have indicated that students in the CBD are not their main concern as they are focused on

problem in Khayamandi.

“The circle of abuse often continues because cases can’t be completed as victims regularly decide not to continue with the case. This is unfortunate as the cycle of abuse then just continues,”

the campus area with students making their way home from the faculties or organising transport where needed.

In cases where crimes do happen, Sonjani says tools like the Stellenbosch Municipality’s CCTV cameras are of the utmost importance. “We see it as a very important tool in assisting us, but we noticed that the tender for the CCTV operator has been cancelled. We appeal to the municipality to really start improving its security systems as it helps with investigations.”

Eikestadnuus reached out to the municipality about CCTV in the area, who confirmed the system is up and running. However, there are some cameras that need repairs.

“The municipality recently conducted a comprehensive assessment of the entire network. The municipality currently has no CCTV service provider,” says Stuart Grobbelaar, spokesperson for the Stellenbosch Municipality.

“Two service providers were designated for different categories, but unfortunately their systems were not compatible (although they initially indicated they would be), making integration impossible. A new tender process is underway to appoint a service provider, with a three-year term.”

He adds the municipality invites partners to be part of the municipal control room’s monitoring and operational planning. “The police were initially very involved, but have been absent for some time. We hope that their presence will improve in 2025 to

Sonjani said.

The matter has been postponed to Thursday 13 February for the state to finalise its investigation and for the court to determine a date for the case to be transferred to the regional court.

ensure faster response times and efficient collaboration.”

Recent attacks on farms at Rust en Vrede, along the R44, and a farm on the Polkadraai Road, as well as in the Raithby area shocked local communities. Robbers gained access to homes on the farms, attacked the residents and fled with loot in many of these cases.

Sonjani explains structures like farm watches and the Stellenbosch Community Policing Forum are important partners. He adds in the case of farms, he encourages communities to organise themselves through organisations like farm watches and farm associations which then liaise with station management.

“Report any suspicious activity to this structure so they can directly contact the cluster sector managers,” he advises.

He says talks with the farming community will be arranged so that police challenges like gaining access to properties in cases of emergencies can be streamlined.

Along with the focus on the Stellenbosch CBD, Sonjani also shares his plans for hotspot areas including Khayamandi, where cases of genderbased violence and misuse of alcohol are rife. The subsequent escalation of contact crimes that often go along with substance abuse is therefore a focus.

He urges all residents to get involved with their community structures to help combat crime or by simply reporting any suspicious activity in your neighbourhood.

‘Unlocked’ supports Usiko

Yaël Malgas

Legendary sports commentator Martin Locke found himself looking back on his remarkable life a few years ago and decided to pen his autobiography, which he is now paying forward with the proceeds of the book.

Unlocked tells the story of the 85year old’s life from his days as a naughty teen at boarding school to taking to the stage in the United Kingdom and his broadcastings days at the SABC.

“I wanted to give back to the community in some way and was impressed to see the wonderful work Usiko Stellenbosch does in Jamestown.

Young people have always been close to my heart. When I finished the book, I promised myself to help uplift kids, and so this donation to Usiko.”

Usiko was started 25 years ago by a few Jamestown residents who wanted to specifically help local boys who grew up without fathers. According to executive director and founding member Arnold Okkers, the organisation has helped more than 22 000 young people over the years.

Usiko’s original programme, Rite of Passage, has since evolved from the 10-day long camps for troubled boys to more than seven specialised programmes. These programmes include an aftercare facility, holiday workshops and a food kitchen.

“We work with various institutions to help young people with social challenges. We provide mentors, individual support as well as equip the youngsters with life skills and even

provide parent programmes,” Okkers says. Annually more than a 1 000 children from Jamestown to Citrusdal are helped through Usiko.

Locke launched his book on 12 December 2024 and Unlocked has since been available online on Amazon. The proceeds from these first sales are what he handed over to Okkers last Thursday (23 January) at De Zalze estate where Locke resides.

In Unlocked readers can read about Locke sneaking out of his rooms at boarding school to visit the girls. “We were always gentlemen, of course,” he hastens to add.

Locke says as someone who didn’t complete school, he hopes to inspire other young people who aren’t academically inclined to create rich, fulfilling lives in other ways.

For Locke, sport was much more interesting than his school books, but it was a turn on the stage for drama class that changed his life forever.

After seeing his performance, a representive from Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) asked Locke if he would like to study in England. “RADA only took two students from Africa at the time, so it was a great honour. That was the making of me. I spent two years at the academy.”

Locke’s mother was militant about keeping newspaper cuttings of her son’s performances and achievements. She made Locke promise to continue the scrapbooking after she was gone and ultimately it was these scrapbooks that inspired him to write his autobiography. This labour of love took him eight years.

Okkers thanked Locke for his donation and invited him to join the young people of Usiko on the cricket field to share a few pointers that he picked up as a player and a veteran sport commentator.

) Unlocked can be purchased on Amazon and Locke hopes to get his book into local bookshops as well.

As-yet-unhoused school begins well

Yaël Malgas

A new school has begun amid great excitement despite having no building, which is still under construction.

Nevertheless, Stellenbosch Apex’s 340 cubs, or initial intake of learners, started the year with enthusiasm.

According to the school’s CEO, Janna du Plooy, the school is at maximum capacity for the year. She said the construction team was looking forward to continue the construction of the new premises, situated just outside Khayamandi, on the site of the former Louiesenhof Cellar. This will proceed only in March.

The official sod turning of the new school building took place last August.

“Towards the end of 2024, the municipality requested that we reconsider granting it a servitude over the property, which they may in future need to use for construction of a link road,” Du Plooy said.

“This has delayed the administrative processes somewhat, but we are expecting it to be finalised

imminently. We have subsequently approved this request for a servitude, amended our plans accordingly, and have resubmitted it to the municipal offices.”

Du Plooy said the project was on track and the new school will eventually grow to accommodate 1 000 learners from Grade 8 to 12.

“The facility will be an extremely modern educational facility, where every learner works at their own computer, with lessons loaded on our unique learning platform. Apex Stellenbosch will showcase a new model of education where technology is extensively leveraged to enhance the educational offering, better equipping our learners for the world. There will also be multipurpose sports facilities, a cycling ‘pump track’ and an open-air amphitheatre.”

The learners are currently housed in Khayamandi’s former Anglican church building, which has been transformed into a state-of-theart private secondary learning facility. A primary school is also on the cards.

Enforcement up, fatalities down this holiday season

The Western Cape has recorded a significant decrease in road fatalities during the 2024-’25 festive season, with 139 deaths reported between 1 December 2024 and January 2025.

This represents a 15,24% reduction compared to the previous year’s 164 fatalities, according to provincial minister for mobility Isaac Sileku.

He announced this at a media briefing at the Berg River Boulevard in Paarl on Monday (27 January).

Sileku said fatal crashes had also decreased from 142 to 123 in the same period. The province maintained its status as South Africa’s only region with around-the-clock traffic law enforcement, deploying 701 officers and 356 vehicles across the region.

The festive season saw a shift in enforcement strategy, moving away from static operations towards increased visibility through sector patrolling. Law enforcement conducted 1 695 integrated operations, focusing on high-risk areas including the N1, N2, and metro areas like Khayelitsha and Woodstock.

Of the 215 161 vehicles inspected, authorities made 905 arrests, with drunk driving accounting for 627 cases, an increase from 576 the previous year. Most offenders were males aged 18 to 35. Officers issued 72 438 fines for various traffic violations, showing a decrease from the previous year’s 87 000.

The province’s Road Safety Education Unit conducted 43 interventions, including mall activations that reached more than 3 200 members of the public. The campaign included extensive communication efforts through various media channels and safety

checks on more than 1 000 publictransport vehicles at major transport hubs.

Despite these improvements, Sileku highlighted ongoing challenges, particularly pedestrian fatalities, which remain the highest category of road deaths, albeit a 6% decrease.

Drunk driving continued to be a major concern, even after nearly 36 000 alcohol screenings.

“While we celebrate this reduction in fatalities any loss of life on our roads is one too many,” said Sileku, extending condolences to families who lost loved ones during the festive season. He emphasised the need for continued collaboration between authorities and the public to further improve road safety in the province.

Wyndruifoes lyk belowend

Waterplekke, soos fonteine of

The CTCB company will be led by principals Kirstél Paterson and Leusson Muniz in the lead roles as Giselle and Albrecht, alongside a star line-up.

Giselle is a poignant story that explores the transformative power of love and forgiveness. The ballet opens in a vibrant village setting, where Giselle, a vibrant young peasant girl, dreams of love. Her romance with Albrecht, a nobleman disguised as a villager, is full of youthful promise, but is soon shattered when his true identity is revealed.

Paige at Muratie on Valentine’s Day

Stellenbosch songbird Luna Paige will embark on a national tour, Oceanic Heart, from February until the end of May.

The tour will start in the Western and Eastern Cape, before the vocalist entertains and mesmerises music lovers in the northern parts of the country in April and May.

The first performance of the Oceanic Heart tour will be held at Muratie Wine Estate in Stellenbosch on Friday 14 February. This special Valentine’s show promises to satisfy all the senses with spectacular views, ambience, top-quality wine, food and a special music programme.

In Oceanic Heart Paige brings music lovers a collection of songs that celebrate the comprehensive nature of love. She sings about romantic love, love among friends and family, and the deep connection between humans and their animals. She also sings about love of nature, travel and – most importantly –self-love.

No stranger to discerning music lovers in South Africa, the singer, songwriter and storyteller is known for her exemplary songwriting and powerful voice.

Audiences are often impressed by her ability to write her own songs and perform them while accompanying herself on acoustic guitar and piano.

She has released five English albums, two Afrikaans albums, a South African Music Awardsnominated collaborative album and multiple singles since 2003.

Besides performing her original material, Paige has selected songs by bands and songwriters who have written songs about their own siblings, four-legged friends, their love of music and the long and winding road. She will perform her own version of these popular songs during the show.

In October and November 2024 she toured nationally with her Tuiskoms/Coming Home Tour, after spending three exhilarating months in Europe.

In October this year Paige will embark on a tour of The Netherlands with a brand-new production, Dreamland

The doors to the Valentine’s dinner-show at Muratie open at 18:30, with the show starting at 20:00 for 20:30. Tickets, at R195 each, includes a complimentary drink on arrival. Book your place online at www.muratie.co.za.

in Mei

Meet the new SU Chancellor

Lesetja Kganyago, Governor of the South African Reserve Bank (SARB), was unanimously elected to the office of Chancellor of Stellenbosch University (SU) on Friday (24 January).

This follows the end of Justice Edwin Cameron’s five-year term last month (December).

The Chancellor is the titular head of the University. An electoral college, constituted in terms of the SU Statute and consisting of all members of the Council and the Executive Committee of the Senate, met last Friday to elect the institution’s 16th Chancellor.

Governor Kganyago received an honorary doctorate (Doctor of Commerce (DCom) honoris causa) from SU in 2018 and is viewed as one of the finest public-policy minds in the country. In December 2020, Nelson Mandela University also conferred upon

him an honorary Doctorate of Commerce.

He holds a Master of Science degree in development economics from London University (School of Oriental and African Studies) and a Bachelor of Commerce degree in accounting and economics from the University of South Africa.

He had been a deputy governor of the SA Reserve Bank since May 2011.

“Tertiary institutions have always played a pivotal role in shaping future leaders, and driving social, economic, and cultural transformation in our country. As Chancellor of this dynamic institution, I am looking forward to inspiring the next generation to realise their full potential and contribute meaningfully to the growth and development of our country and continent,” Governor Kganyago commented.

Students urged to take growth opportunities

Among the thousands who made their way to Stellenbosch to further their studies, are agricultural students of the Elsenburg Agricultural Training Institute (EATI).

On Friday (24 January), Western Cape Minister of Agriculture, Economic Development and Tourism Ivan Meyer welcomed the “first-years” to Elsenburg.

He urged the students to seize every opportunity EATI offers, as it is their first step in their journey towards helping to grow the province’s critical agricultural sector.

“Human capital development is at the core of the Western Cape Government’s economic growth ambitions. Being a student at EATI allows you to acquire the knowledge and skills you need to become a professional in one of the most exciting sectors of our economy.

“A skilled labour force is one of the key pillars of our Growth for Jobs Strategy. Elsenburg has been creating opportunities in agriculture for the youth for more than 125 years. It will continue to do so for many more years to come and enable the sector to contribute to the bold target set for 2035, where our regional economy is growing

at 5% annually.”

EATI received 6 249 applications and was able to offer conditional placement to 568 students this year.

In his inaugural address, recently appointed principal Granville Stander emphasised 2025 as the institute’s year to thrive and encouraged taking advantage of every opportunity to grow academically, personally and socially.

Along with offering the Bachelor of Agriculture degree and a Diploma in Agriculture, EATI will also, for the first time, offer occupational qualifications including Livestock Supervisor and Orchard and Vineyard Foremen as well as Certificate in Horsemanship, in line with the requirements of the Quality Council for Trades and Occupations (QCTO).

“The province’s economic growth strategy aims to enable people to access opportunities through developing skills and productivity, nurturing local expertise and entrepreneurship,” said Meyer, “enabling micro-and small-sized enterprises to participate in industry value chains and supporting selfemployment. This is the path we are all on, and your journey starts here at EATI.”

and Vice-Chancellor, said: “I am thrilled to welcome Governor Kganyago as the new Chancellor of our university. With his unparalleled expertise in economics, finance and leadership, combined with his steadfast dedication to public service, he embodies the qualities we deeply value as an institution. I have no doubt that Governor Kganyago will inspire our university community.”

Prof Deresh Ramjugernath, Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Learning and Teaching and Vice-Chancellor-elect added that Kganyago’s leadership at the pinnacle of economic policy and his commitment to the careful custodianship of the national reserves have set a formidable example.

The election of Kganyago is a moment of great pride for the SU community Nicky Newton-King, Chair of the SU Council, said. “Governor Kganyago’s exemplary leadership, vast experience, and unwavering commitment to independence and excellence are

inspiring matters of public record. “I very much look forward to welcoming the Governor to the university community. I would also like to recognise and thank Justice Cameron for his commitment and service as Chancellor,” she said in welcoming the new Chancellor.

Governor Kganyago has assumed office, although a date for his official inauguration is yet to be set.

Engineering students world-class

Two master’s students in engineering at Stellenbosch University, Yasmin de Raay and Chris Erasmus, have advanced to the international round of the 2025 Blue Sky Young Researchers and Innovation competition.

Their projects impressed the Paper Manufacturers Association of South Africa (Pamsa) for their originality and relevance to the forestry sector, which plays a key role in producing wood and paper.

Managed by the International Council of Forestry and Paper Associations (ICFPA), the competition seeks projects from researchers under 30 who are working in forest-based science, products using wood, pulp or paper as a raw material, process improvements or other innovations throughout the forest sector value chain.

As first and second place winners in the South African competition, Erasmus and De Raay, were awarded R15 000 and R10 000 respectively. Their projects will now be judged against those from the US, Canada, Europe and Australia at the ICFPA CEO Global Roundtable in New York in May.

“As a sector that has for decades centred on the renewability of wood,” said Jane Molony, Pamsa executive director, “both of these projects offer significant value for forestry companies by enhancing sustainable forest management and improving crop yields. This, in turn,

supports the sustainable supply of wood into pulp, paper, and sawn timber industries.”

Both students’ submissions focused on the monitoring of aspects of tree health, which plays a critical part in tree resilience and resource optimisation, by using technology to capture and analyse data continuously and remotely.

Erasmus, who is completing a master’s in electrical and electronic engineering, has developed a wireless dendrometer and environmental sensing system tailored for the forestry industry.

This solar-powered device tracks tree growth patterns, water dynamics, and environmental stressors, such as temperature, humidity and soil moisture with precision. It

vlakke uitdaag.

. Die Droomoptog in Victoriastraat waar studente onder leiding van akademiese personeel en studenteleiers hul akademiese reis by die US

amptelik tegemoet stap – om 20:00 vandag (30 Januarie).

. Klusteratletiekbyeenkoms vir nuwelinge – Donderdag 6 Februarie.

. Voorbereiding vir “Connect”,

offers a cost-effective, lowmaintenance solution, reducing the need for human intervention while ensuring consistent accuracy and reliability.

De Raay is pursuing a master’s degree in industrial engineering, specialising in agritech with a strong focus on integrating technology and nature conservation.

Her project introduces a mini rhizotron system designed to remotely monitor root growth and dynamics in forestry plantations. By using machinelearning techniques and capturing microscopic images of roots, this system provides continuous, cost-effective access to vital root growth data, even in remote field settings, improving resource optimisation without sacrificing quality.

(wat almal as “Vensters” ken) –Vrydag 7 Februarie.

. “Connect” / Vensters – om 16:00 Saterdag 8 Februarie by die Welgevallen-hokkieveld. Vanjaar se tema is Vensters 2025: The Sound of Stellies – die musiekblyspel.

School vandalism, thefts in holidays

Despite increased Western Cape Government-subsidised holiday security there was an increase in burglary and vandalism at schools.

This according to the Western Cape Education Department (WCED), which provided security during the holidays to 480 schools this year. The department said during the summer holidays 47 incidents of burglary or vandalism were reported by 34 schools.

This is a significant increase in incidents from the 26 incidents reported at 24 schools during the same period last year. While the majority of the incidents were minor in nature, these incidents are costly to schools, both in terms of the cost of replacement and the impact on school functionality.

Items damaged or stolen include electrical fixtures, appliances, food for learners, bathroom fixtures, fencing and security equipment, windows

and a host of other items.

“It is disappointing that our schools will once again have to allocate time and resources to cover these losses,” the departement said in a statement.

“Our schools are precious community resources and they must be protected and cared for by all of us.”

Communities are urged to keep a close eye on their local schools, and to report suspicious activity in the vicinity of schools to South African Police Services or via the Safe Schools hotline (0800 45 46 47) immediately.

“If you have any information, no matter how small, about the incidents that occurred over the holiday, please do not hesitate to inform the police. What might seem insignificant information may turn out to be the missing piece of the puzzle that they need to apprehend the criminals and recover our schools’ property!”

For Vics, Daniel Ristow (3/6), Zack Micklewright (2/19), Gaoraelwe (2/18) and Connor Batt (2/12) were in rampant form with the leather.

On the batting front, Maahir Josephs (55) led the Vics batting effort, while Copeland (2/20) was the only Stellenbosch bowler to ask questions of the Vics batters.

On Sunday, Stellenbosch suffered another agonising defeat, this time at the hands of Paarl CC at the Parys Oval in Paarl. Again, the batsmen let the Stellenbosch team down, as they were only able to score 147/10 in 43.1 overs. Layman (31), Morgan Peterson (30) and Curt Oliver (25) were the top run scorers.

Paarl made light work of the target, chasing it down in just 19 overs to win by nine wickets. Peter Cyster (1/46) was the only Stellenbosch bowler to claim a scalp.

The previous day, Paarl were not so fortunate as they suffered a three-wicket defeat at the hands of Maties CC. The students managed to restrict the home side to 210/9 in 50 overs, with Ross Boast (2/37), Salmaan Ajam (2/35) and

Kent Goedeke (2/29) performing well on the bowling front.

In their innings, Maties lost seven wickets on their way to victory, but managed to cross the line in the 34th over. Gysbert Wege (59), David Christie (52), Jason Muirhead (48) and Kaden Solomons (29) were on-song with the willow.

Coronations CC, meanwhile, suffered a defeat, going down by six wickets to Paarl East CC at the New Orleans Oval on Saturday. Corries batted first and were all-out for 169 runs in the 46th over, despite the valiant efforts of Ethan Cunningham (70) and Colin Myburgh (38).

Paarl East chased down the target with ease, crossing the line with the scoreboard reading 173/4 after 33.4 overs. Keano Valentine (3/49) was Corries’ only stand-out bowler. This weekend, all teams of the greater Stellenbosch area will be in action on Saturday (1 February). Maties will host Coronations at the Coetzenburg Oval, Vics travel to lock horns with Robertson CC, Van der Stel hosts Vredenburg-Saldanha CC at Bergsig and Stellenbosch welcomes Young Peoples to Idas Valley. All matches are scheduled to start at 10:00.

Action heats up in Boland Premier League

The first team of Van der Stel Cricket Club extended their lead at the top of the Cricket Boland Premier League with two victories at the weekend.

The team from Stellenbosch recorded victories over Wellington and Victorians on Saturday and Sunday, respectively, to remain comfortably in the driver’s seat of the league on 33 points after eight matches. They are now nine points ahead of Maties (24 points), who have two games in hand and also secured a comfortable win over Paarl on Saturday (25 January).

In their first encounter against Wellington at Bergsig Oval, Van der Stel pulled out all the stops to snatch a five-run victory over the men from the Drakenstein.

The home side batted first and scored 212/8 in their 50 overs, with most batsmen chipping in to get to the total. The star performers were Stefan Maree (46), Byron Haycock (35), Ben Lombard (34), Wynand Smit (29) and Werner Brand (25).

Brand continued his good form with the leather in hand, ripping through the Wellington batting line-up to notch-up figures of 6/26. He was well-supported

by JJ Lambrechts (2/20) as the hosts bowled out Wellington for 207 in 49 overs.

The Van der Stel charges carried over this winning momentum into Sunday, as they completely dominated proceedings in their meeting with Victorians at the Tassies Oval in Stellenbosch. Van der Stel batted first and scored 276/6 in 50 overs, with Brand (80) and Haycock (60*) again leading the charge with the willow. They were aptly supported by Ruben de Bruin (41), Andre Hanekom (32) and Pieter Malan (29).

For Vics, Anda Dilima (2/62) and Roxton Payne (2/37) tried their best to holt the Van der Stel batting onslaught.

In their chase, the home side struggled to build any decent

partnerships and they regularly lost wickets on their way to being bowled out for 172 runs in the 46th over.

Josh Brown (52) and Boago Gaoraelwe (39*) were the top run scorers for Vics, while Smit (4/18), Divan Swanepoel (2/22) and Rayyaan Rhode (2/28) were the chief destroyers in Van der Stel’s 104-run victory.

This result was a very different one to the dominant six-wicket victory Vics recorded over Stellenbosch CC at Idas Valley Sports Ground the previous day. Stellenbosch batted first and were all bowled out for 105 runs in 39.1 overs, with only Michael Copeland (45) and Brand Layman (36*) truly contributing to their team’s tally.
