“Ons is mense, nie diere nie. Hulle kan ons nie só behandel nie.”
Dit was die pensioentrekker Elizabeth Bosch se kommentaar nadat sy en talle pensioentrekkers die SuidAfrikaanse Agentskap vir Maatskaplike Sekerheid (Sassa) se kantoor in Klapmuts Maandag (17 Februarie) besoek het. Dié 74-jarige is een van die miljoene Suid-Afrikaners wat nuwe kaarte van Postbank moet kry nadat Sassa aangekondig het die goue kaarte sal uitgefaseer word.
Sonder die nuwe kaarte sal begunstigdes van staatstoelaes nie hul geld ontvang nie. Aanvanklik sou die goue kaarte op 28 Februarie ophou
werk het, maar ná pleidooie van die provinsiale regering, begunstigdes en welsynsorganisasies is die afsnydatum tot Donderdag 20 Maart verleng.
“Die mense het nie ’n probleem om die kaarte te vervang nie. Ons moes dit voorheen ook doen, maar die manier hoe mense behandel word . . . ek sit hier met trane in my oë,” het Bosch aan Eikestadnuus vertel.
Stellenbossers wend hulle nou na organisasies soos StellCare vir advies met die uitdagende proses. ’n Groot deel van hul “vreeslike gesukkel” is omdat hier nie ’n plaaslike Sassakantoor is nie.

“Sommige van daardie grootmense het 03:00 opgestaan om betyds in die ry te wees. Die mense moet heeldag in die son staan en wanneer dit 16:00 is, sê hulle dat hulle klaar is vir die dag – ‘kom maar môre weer’.”
Jaco Londt, die Wes-Kaapse minister van maatskaplike ontwikkeling, het die uitsteldatum in ’n persverklaring verwelkom.
Die departement is oorval met navrae en klagtes van
begunstigdes van oor die provinsie heen.
“Baie van die klagtes [gaan oor] die gebrek aan Postbankterreine in landelike gebiede. Dit is onaanvaarbaar dat die meeste dienspunte in die provinsie in die Kaapse Metro is, met slegs ’n paar in George, Vredenburg en Caledon –hoewel ons inligting ontvang het dat dié in Vredenburg en Caledon blykbaar nie in werking is nie. Die kantore moet ook voldoende beman word om die toestroming van begunstigdes te hanteer,” lui die verklaring.
Londt meen Postbank moet die aantal dienspunte in landelike gebiede vermeerder.
Begunstigdes het egter die opsie om hul toelaes in ’n bankrekening te laat betaal. Londt sê die departement sal voortgaan om die kaartmigrasieproses te monitor om te verseker dat kwesbare inwoners – vir wie toelaes noodsaaklik is – die beste diens moontlik ontvang.

More than 400 ha of vegetation was scorched in a wildfire that broke out in the Banhoek Valley between Kylemore and Stellenbosch on Saturday (15 February).
According to Anesca Roodt, spokesperson for the Cape Winelands District
Municipality (CWDM), fire services were alerted to the blaze at 11:18.
Multiple firefighting teams were swiftly deployed, with resources from CWDM, Stellenbosch Municipality, CapeNature and several private and volunteer organisations responding to the emergency.
A total of 16 firefighting vehicles were deployed – 10 from CWDM and six from Stellenbosch Municipality –each staffed with two operators. Additionally, ground teams from CWDM (30 personnel), Mountain to Ocean (30 firefighters), CapeNature (10 officials) and Volunteer Wildfire Services (eight volunteers) assisted in extinguishing the fire.
The battle against the flames was further reinforced by aerial resources, which included two Huey helicopters, one Blackhawk, and one Squirrel. These aircraft provided crucial support on Saturday and Sunday, Roodt added.
Key partners in the firefighting efforts included the
Winelands Fire Protection Association, Stellenbosch Municipality, the provincial Disaster Management Centre, CapeNature, Volunteer Wildfire Services, Mountain to Ocean, as well as CWDM contractors NCC, Lewis Bush Clearing, and Leading-Edge Aviation.
By 06:00 on Monday (17 February), the CWDM confirmed the inferno had been contained.
Roodt said despite the scale of the fire, no injuries to wildlife have been reported and no property was damaged. Concerns had been raised about the fire spreading to high-lying areas of Jonkershoek Valley, but strategic
firefighting techniques and a well-coordinated response prevented further expansion.
“Using standard firefighting techniques, excellent teamwork between all role-players and coordination from a central incident command was critical in containing the fire,” Roodt stated. “Lastly, we also had a bit of good fortune.”
While the damage to vegetation was significant, the rapid response by emergency services and their partners ensured that the fire was contained before it could cause greater destruction.
They were set to continue monitoring the affected areas to prevent potential flare-ups.

Keith Jacobs, ’n geliefde inwoner van Klapmuts en werknemer by die BPvulstasie in dié dorp, is die afgelope naweek in ’n tragiese voorval doodgesteek.
Volgens Jean Jacobs, ’n familielid van Keith, het die voorval Saterdagoggend (15 Februarie) kort ná middernag in Mosesstraat naby die Sewendelaantaverne plaasgevind.
Jacobs het gesê kort hierna het ’n vriend van Keith homself by die Klapmutspolisiekantoor oorgegee, waarna hy in hegtenis geneem is vir die moord op Keith.
Na wat verneem word het ’n woordewisseling tussen Keith en sy vriend ontstaan, wat daartoe gelei het dat Keith verskeie kere met ’n mes in die bolyf gesteek is. Hy is op die toneel deur paramedici dood verklaar.
“Hy het in die arms van ’n ander vriend gesterf,” het Jacobs gesê. Jacobs het verder verduidelik dat Keith en sy vriend reeds vir ’n ruk lank in ’n struweling betrokke was. Volgens haar is die Jacobs-familie “gebroke” oor die voorval omdat die twee vriende saam grootgeword het.
“Ons [die Jacobs-familie] sal Keith onthou as ’n grapperige mens, vol lewe, en ’n absolute mense-mens,” het Jacobs gesê. Medelye het ná sy dood op ’n Klapmutsgemeenskapsgroep op Facebook ingestroom met veral klante van die BPvulstasie wat kommentaar gelewer het oor hoe “behulpsaam” en “vriendelik” hy altyd was. Keith het ongeveer drie jaar by die vulstasie gewerk. Hy laat sy vriendin en vier kinders agter, waarvan die jongste kind vyf maande oud is. Die Klapmuts-polisie het nog nie kommentaar oor die voorval gelewer nie.

Vragmotors – hoog gepak met meubels – het Dinsdag (18 Februarie) in Merchantstraat, Klapmuts, gestop om die huisgoed van voormalige werkers van die Nooitgedachtwynlandgoed af te lewer.
Vyftien huise is amptelik aan voormalige werkers oorhandig nadat Migal Wirth en die res van die familie besluit het om werkers hul eie wonings te gee. Wirth het langer as vyf jaar gewerk om ’n kleinhoewe in Klapmuts in behuising om te skep.
Nou spog oud-Nooitgedacht-werkers soos die 59-jarige Johannie Petro met sy eerste huis. Hy was vir 25 jaar ’n drywer op die plaas. “Dit is ’n blye dag, want ek sou nooit ’n huis van my eie kon bekostig nie,” sê Petro.
Joseph Alexander (70) sê hy het Migal en sy sibbe sien grootword en dit is besonders dat die familie in sy toekoms belê het. “Ek het hulle op my skouers rondgedra en nou seën die Here my deur hul hande. Ek het 40 jaar terug vir sy ouma begin werk en dit was die mooiste werk wat ek kon doen – om tuinier te wees is ’n gawe van God,” verduidelik Alexander.
Hy woon nou saam met sy vrou en kleinseun (25) in Klapmuts. Die man met die groenvingers sê hy het reeds planne vir sy nuwe tuintjie.

Harris, direkteur van eiendom ontwikkeling, verduidelik dit was belangrik om die eienaars met waardigheid te hanteer. Daar was egter sommige begunstigdes wat veel te sê gehad het oor die bouwerk, maar die span het kopgehou en al die draadjies is saamgetrek. “Dit is nie elke dag dat ons ’n staatsdepartement ’n pluimpie gee nie, maar ons het goed met die Stellenbosch-munisipaliteit saamgewerk,” sê hy.
Begunstigdes kon nie intrek alvorens die elektrisiteit gekoppel was nie en ná maande se gesukkel het Adonis Vrydag die goeie nuus ontvang dat daar elektrisiteit was. “Hierdie projek was soos ’n roller coaster. Die families het gereeld kom kyk hoe die bouwerk vorder en het baie kommentaar gehad, maar ten spyte van alles is hulle gelukkig met die eindproduk en diegene wat die meeste gekla het, het eerste ingetrek,” vertel hy skertsend.
Saam met hul nuwe bate is die begunstigdes ook geleer wat presies hul regte en verantwoordelikhede as huiseienaars is. Ferdenando het nou met die begunstigdes saamgewerk om seker te maak al die nodige administrasie is gedoen om hul eiendom te bekom. Dit het ure van vorms invul
behels en om sessies by te woon waar die gesinne verduidelik is hoe om vir ’n munisipale-deernis-toelae aansoek te doen. “Vir die begunstigdes is dit die eerste keer dat hulle eiendom besit. Hulle gaan van ’n situasie waar hulle geen uitgawe vir verblyf gehad het nie en nou moet hulle vir water en elektrisiteit betaal. Dit is gewis ’n kopskuif wat gemaak word,” vertel sy. Hulp is ook van die Stellenboschregskliniek verkry om seker te maak die begunstigdes se testamente is in orde.

Sokkertalent is in sy gene aangesien Uan se oupa, Bennie, ook sy sokkerafrigter is. Dié Hoërskool Lückhoff-leerder speel vir die Oriental Gunners-sokkerklub en sê hy is baie opgewonde oor die toer. Hy bedank Williams se werkgewer, Sinapi Biomedical, wat die grootste deel van die toergeld geborg het. Hy spreek ook sy dank uit aan sy oupa en Williams wat gepoog het om die geld in
te samel om sy droom te laat waar word.
Williams sê daar word nou gespook om sakgeld vir Uan in te samel en kitskos-verkope sal binnekort begin om hierdie geld te in. “Die ondersteuning wat ons uit die gemeenskap ontvang het, was net oorweldigend. Mense wat ons nie eens ken nie, het hand in die sak gesteek om ’n bydrae, al was dit net ’n paar rand, te gee. Ons is dankbaar vir dit alles,” vertel sy.
Die toer vind van 1 tot 16 Julie plaas en bestaan uit wedstryde wat as vertoning vir hul sokkertalente sal dien. Van hier is dit die hoop vir spelers soos Uan om deur hul gunsteling- internasionale spanne raakgesien te word met die hoop op ’n kontrak.
“Ons glo die Here het vir hom hierdie gawe gegee om iets mee te doen. Hy sou Uan nie só ver bring en dan kom daar niks van nie. Ek is seker wanneer hy ná die toer terugkom, sal dit net wees om sy sakke te pak om terug Spanje toe te gaan,” sê sy stiefouma skertsend.

Their fast feet and high kicks have landed the dancers of the Ramsay School Of Irish Dance the opportunity to participate in the 2025 World Irish Dance Championships.
Among the energetic, specialist dancers is Stellenbosch dancer Cathryn Goodwin.
According to the 27-year-old it was the music and athleticism that drew her to Irish dance.
“The lively music, different rhythms and energy are what first attracted me to Irish dancing. It is an amazing form of exercise, and it also allows one to meet many wonderful people,” she related. “Irish dancing has helped grow my confidence and has given me a sense of belonging. What started as a hobby and sport has become a huge part of my life.”
Now, with more than two decades of dance under her belt, Goodwin and her fellow dancers each have to raise R50 000 to attend to the international championships.
Bester explained.
“The dancers will take part in their four main dances in their grade for medals and there are extra dances offered that vary from competition to competition. The competition itself is known as ‘feís’ in Irish. The grades involved are beginner (Bun Grád), primary (Tús Grád), intermediate (Meán Grád), and open (Árd Grád).”
Goodwin’s enjoys performing in the heavy shoe dances, in particular the Hornpipe. “I love its swinging melody and rhythms.”

Preparing for any competition is stringent. “We train year-round,” Goodwin said. “Leading up to a major competition we will have three classes a week, and on three other days I will do cross training at home to work on strength and fitness.”
The school has started a BackaBuddy campaign to help with the group’s expenses to get to Dublin and plan to host various performances to help generate the funds.
“It is a dream to dance on the world’s stage,” Goodwin said of the forthcoming competition.
“It makes me proud to represent my country by competing against the world’s best and showing them how much Irish dancing has grown in South Africa.”

Parents and community members closed the school gates of Klapmuts Hill Primary and adjacent Klapmuts High School, refusing to budge until they received answers from the provincial education department over decisions concerning the school.
Officers of the Public Order Policing (POP) Unit were stationed at the school on Tuesday morning (18 February). This comes after parents of Grade 5 learners received letters stating the class would now be taught in Afrikaans, despite it being an English-medium class. Parents were apparently informed the change was immediate, with Afrikaans teaching set for Monday.
With little-to-no answers from school management and the school governing body, parents asked the local circuit manager to come and address them, but he indicated he was not available. “We took my grandson out of the other local school so he could be taught in English,” Nonceba Tshababala said. “That way he may have an easier time with his future studies and more opportunities.”
She said parents were told
the Grade 5 teacher’s contract had ended and no new appointment would be made.
Parents of high school learners also raised concerns.
Abongile Kobo said her Grade 11 child was informed that mathematics and physical science were no longer on offer. “They were just told everyone was going to do tourism now. This is unacceptable. Language is also a problem because it is so confusing to go from lessons in English to Afrikaans.”
After negotiations all parties agreed to meet later that day.
According to parent Leticia Petersen, whose children attend both schools, the department is working on plans to address parents’ concerns. “Why was it necessary for us to take these actions before they came to meet with us? It is the learners who suffer most,” she said. “But there has been some positive steps and the circuit manager as well as the local directors have listened to us. They say the challenges with the language issue and the lack of maths and physical science will be addressed as they assured us teachers will be appointed.”
Eikestadnuus approached the department for comment, but no response was received at the time of going to print.
Classes resumed as per normal on Wednesday.
Climate change is increasingly hindering aerial firefighting efforts, with temperatures often surpassing 40 °C during the summer fire season, according to Arno de Lange, a command and control pilot at Kishugu Aviation in Stellenbosch.
De Lange explains that such extreme heat conditions can lead to pilot fatigue, making it more challenging to manage fire operations. He is among the youngest pilots battling intense wildfires in the Western Cape.
De Lange also observes that the expanding wildfire-urban interface is worsening due to climate change. In one example he was called to assist with a water bombing at a hotel in St Helena Bay on the West Coast, which was ablaze.
The hotel had a thatched roof, and before they arrived, the roof collapsed on structural firefighters, forcing them to retreat for safety. Aerial firefighting resources were vital in the life-threatening situation.The fire was in the
heart of the town, with people on the beach nearby, making it a challenge.
“Vegetation is growing and providing fuel for wildfires,” De Lange notes, emphasising how wildfires are increasingly encroaching on urban areas.
He has developed a deep passion for aerial firefighting as a young pilot. He explained that the 2024 fire season was the busiest he has been involved in, with times when strong winds prevented helicopter take-offs.
De Lange expressed concern about the shifting patterns of climate change and their impact on firefighting efforts.
After earning his pilot’s licence in 2015, De Lange transitioned to teaching flight training at various schools across South Africa before joining Kishugu Aviation. “I didn’t have a firefighting background as a pilot, but I had to learn it,” he said.

Ek het ’n paar weke gelede in Eikestadnuus die “Wilde Weste”-brief rakende Cloetesville gelees (“Misdaad in Stellenbosch – maar wat van Cloetesville?”, 23 Januarie).
Ek kon daarmee saamstem, want ons bly al vir jare in Langstraat en dinge was nog nooit só erg nie.
Dis net totdat iets werklik met ’n mens gebeur dat ’n mens eintlik die vrese sal verstaan waarmee die inwoners lewe.
Toe my broer alleen Woensdagmiddag 5 Februarie by een van die spazawinkels om die draai van U-save iets gaan koop, is hy in sy kar beroof. Drie mans het hom genader om geld te vra, maar hy beweeg nooit met kontant nie en het aan hulle gesê dat hy ongelukkig nie het nie.
Toe hy in sy kar klim, die deur toemaak en net-net wil toesluit, maak een van hulle vinnig die deur oop en dreig hom met ’n mes voor sy bors vir sy selfoon.
Nou, liewe leser, ons as gesin dien almal die Here en Hy leer ons om ons vriende én vyande lief te hê. But jinne! Nie een van ons was daardie oomblik lief vir wie-ever dit aan hom gedoen het nie.
Rondom 19:00, op ’n tracking device, sien ons by wie se huis die selfoon is. Dit wys ook die van van die familie waar sy foon se Wi-Fi gekoppel is.
Ongelukkig het dit nie gehelp nie.
Ek’s ook dankbaar aan die vier beamptes van die Cloetesville-polisiekantoor wat saam met ons na die huis gegaan het. Dit was baie hartseer om ’n bekende gesiggie in daardie huis te sien, veral omdat ons saam as kinders in my auntie se straat gespeel het. Hy’s wel nie die een wat die selfoon gesteel het nie, tog was dit ’n skok om te sien by wie se huis my broer se foon antwoord gegee het.
Terwyl ons sonder die foon huiswaarts keer, besef ons dat dinge erger kon wees. Ons besef dat ten spyte van wat gebeur het, my broer steeds onder die beskerming van God was.
Toe tref dit my hoe baie ons – veral Cloetesville-inwoners –God eintlik nodig het. Mense sê gewoonlik “ons kan sonder God lewe, maar nie sonder Hom sterwe nie”. Tog kan ons nie meer sonder God leef nie. Ons word nie vrygespreek van die booshede wat om ons in die wêreld gebeur nie, maar God belowe in Psalm 91 dat ons in sy beskerming is.
Ek twyfel dat dinge in Cloetesville enigsins gou weer veiliger sal raak, maar ek twyfel nie dat God in staat is om Sy kinders te beskerm nie. Dalk voel jy dat net mense wat elke Sondag in die kerk sit, kwalifiseer vir God se beskerming, maar ek bring aan
jou ’n blye boodskap: Psalm 22 vers 25 – God neem die gebed van ’n regverdige aan.
Ek kan jou waarborg, as jy met jou hele hart glo dat die Here die enigste ware God is, sal Hy jou gebed verhoor. Hy sal jou nie wegstoot of minder ag nie. Tog is dit my hoop dat jy ook ’n ontmoeting met God sal hê en jou lewe aan Hom toewy, want daar is geen ander uitweg vir ons nie (Jesaja 55).
Terwyl daar nog ’n kans is, keer terug na God en bekeer jou tot Hom. My broer dien sy hele lewe lank al die Here en selfs hy moes die gevaar van die “Dal” in die gesig staar. Is dit nie ’n bewys dat God werklikwaar nie meer maak van ons wat bekeer is, as dié wat nie bekeer is nie? God het jou lief net soos Hy die een wat elke dag in die kerk is, liefhet. Ek is steeds bietjie dikmond vir daai drie mans, maar ek kan nie help om te dink dat hulle miskien die geld nodig gehad het om dalk ietsie op die tafel te sit vir hul gesinne nie. Ek sugar coat nie hul dade nie; ek wil maar net probeer verstaan wat hul rede was.
’n Laaste ietsie aan die drie mans (en indien daar ander betrokke was): Omdat ek weet God het julle steeds baie lief, is dit my gebed dat julle eendag sal besef en glo dat God sy 99 skapies sal los om na dié wat verlore is, te soek (Lukas 15).

Hayden speel sedert gr. 1 sokker en van gr. 5 af vir ’n plaaslike sokkerklub. Deesdae speel hy regtervleuel vir die Idasvallei-sokkerklub. Dit was as lid van dié klub dat hy genooi is om aan die Donosti-bekertoernooi saam met die res van die BT Football Recruitment Agency-span deel te neem.
“Ek is mal oor die spel. Ek kan my passie op die veld uitleef wanneer ek speel. Om internasionaal deel te neem, is ’n groot voorreg, want Spanje se spanne het van die beste spelers van die beste spanne in die wêreld,” vertel Hayden. Dié tiener sê die Nederlandse sokkerster Xavi Simons is sy gunstelingspeler.
Fredericks se gunstelingspeler bly egter haar seun en sy doen moeite om langs die veld te wees wanneer hy speel. “Soms raak hy skaam vir my wat vir hom skree, maar ek kan myself nie help nie. Ek doen regtig moeite om hom die geleenthede te bied wat ek nie gehad het nie. Daarom vra ek die gemeenskap om my te help om Hayden se droom ’n werklikheid te maak.”
Om die R50 000 vir die toer in te samel, is ’n yslike uitdaging vir dié enkelma, maar sy beraam planne om die geld te in aangesien die eerste
betaling van R10 000 aan die einde van vandeesmaand gedoen moet word. Sy bedank Hayden se afrigters, Alfondso Hendricks en Robin Jacobs, wat hom gehelp het om vir die toer in aanmerking te kom.
Fredericks sê Hayden is nog jonk en sy weet daar sal nog geleenthede vir hom wees, maar sy hoop om hom in September op die vliegtuig te kry. Intussen maak Hayden gereed vir die toer. Hy meen sy spel gaan oor meer as net vlugtige voete. “Sokker het my dissipline en respek geleer en om hard te werk. Dit is wat die afrigters gesê het ons moet hê vir die toernooi en om goed te speel saam met jou spanmaats, is die belangrikste. Hulle soek nie tricks nie.” Hayden se droom is om eendag vir Bafana Bafana uit te draf, maar sê indien sy gunstelingspan – Manchester City – vir hom ’n kontrak aanbied, “sal ek nie nee sê nie”.

Pageant participants from the greater Stellenbosch area have returned after a once-in-a-lifetime experience at the Timeless Magnificent Women Icons International (MWI) and Magnificent Men Icons International (MMI) 2025 competition in Mumbai, India.
Among the South African delegation were nine kings and queens from Cloetesville, Pniël, Kylemore and Klapmuts who were selected to fly the SA flag on the global stage at the crowning at Rietenbosch Primary School hall in November last year (“India beckons for youth”, Eikestadnuus, 12 December 2024).
The group departed to India on Tuesday 4 February and embarked on an exciting cultural experience and competed with models from, among others, Gambia, The Netherlands, USA, Portugal, India and Guinea Bissau. At the Timeless MWI/MMI 2025 pageant they took to the runway in four costume categories, including one that depicted the representatives’ national costume, along with interviews with the judges that amounted to 50% of the overall tally.
And the local models upheld the name of the Cape Winelands in the East, bringing home three titles on Tuesday 11 February: Calling Academy learner Martino Appollis won the Mr MMI
International Scholarship; Hayman Jacobs of Rietenbosch Primary walked away with the Little Mr International; and Cloetesville resident and community worker Sonja Adonis was crowned Ms MWI Woman of Distinction.
According to Adonis, the competition aims to drive home the message of the importance of role-models, regardless of age. “The contestants must inspire others to also be good and solid role-models, while simultaneously representing our respective countries and communities,” she explained.
“Along with the charitable work the contestants had to perform in their communities, they also raised funds for local organisations in need. Furthermore, they were ambassadors for MWI/MMI and Scholastic Scholarship.”
Adonis said the reception they received upon arrival in Mumbai was welcoming and heart warming. “During our visit, we visited a local school, where we were also warmly welcomed. The delegates truly enjoyed every minute of exploring another country,” she said.
“For me, the icing on the cake was receiving the award of recognition, along with Johannesburg local Andries du Preez and two delegates from the USA. All the local delegates and the three parents, who accompanied us, cannot stop talking about the wonderful experience.”
Last Wednesday (12 February) the homegrown company African Sun Media marked the launch of its new print plant situated at The Woodmill in Devon Valley. The facility was blessed by renowned former anti-apartheid cleric, theologian and author Dr Allan Boesak, 11 of whose most recent works have been published by African Sun Media, a fact he is most proud of and spoke of at the opening. “While the mere printing of a book is more mundane, the staff and public must be aware of the kind of knowledge and learning that enters the academic enterprise so heavily shaped by the West in the geopolitics of knowledge production,” he said.
Boesak was full of praise for the Stellenbosch-rooted company, which relocated late last year, and with which he has a close bond.
“I said ‘yes’ almost immediately when I got this invitation to open this plant, given my long association with African Sun Media, which dates back to the early 2000s. Most of my work has been published by this business. But more than that, I have grown a very special friendship with managing director Nirode Bramdaw and, in different way, with so many of you here today.”
Citing the Book of Proverbs in a motivational message to the many staffers of African Sun Media, Boesak said those who are dedicated to their work can stand before kings, and do not have to stand before those of a lesser stature.
“When one thinks about it, it doesn’t only talk about a worker who knows what they are doing, but it is also about continuing the legacy of Nirode Bramdaw’s mother, Rookaya, and the standards she set, and which the company has striven to maintain for so long. Each footprint we leave must become a footstep for this legacy, wherever it may be, and each of us must become part of this legacy.”
Further elucidating this key biblical text, he said: “When it speaks of standing with kings it is not hierarchical, but rather that when you work with dedication and knowledge you stand with kings. Kings are people who actually know what they are doing.”
Bramdaw thanked Boesak for the analogy, dubbing it a privilege to work closely with such a world-renowned author, whose work African Sun Media has co-published with American publishers, many of whom preferred its design and output.
The challenges of relocating a print plant in a matter of weeks he referred to as a work in progress, which is expected to come to full fruition soon.
“I would like to thank all of you involved in making the move a success. Through this we have improved company efficiency and communication, operating at one location.”
Thanking creative director Melinda Bolton, Bramdaw recounted how many local and international authors were delighted at the way in which she comprehended content and then interpreted it into innovative design concepts.
“African Sun Media is South Africa’s and indeed Africa’s leading scholarly publisher.”

FNB Maties got their 2025 FNB Varsity Cup campaign off to a winning start, clinching a nail-biting 41-37 victory over defending champions FNB UFS (Shimlas) at the Danie Craven Stadium on Monday evening (17 February).
From the first minute both teams produced exciting, end-to-end rugby. Every time Maties scored the Shimlas responded quickly, making for an entertaining contest.
The home side led 22-16 at half-time in a fast-paced, action-packed match.
The intense humidity and heat led to several handling errors, with Maties struggling more as a result of the sweaty ball, while Shimlas slipped a number of tackles in the first half.
