Kaapse Wynlande se 2024-matrikulante verbeter
Die 2024-matriekklas van Kylemore Sekondêre Skool was deel van die 1,6 miljoen kandidate wat verlede jaar die eksamen vir die nasionale senior sertifikaat (NSS) voltooi het. Die skool spog vanjaar met ’n 89,7%-slaagsyfer, terwyl die Kaapse Wynlande-onderwysdistrik ’n 83,44%-slaagsyfer het. Dit is ’n 8,83%-styging teenoor die 2023-matriekklas. Die aanval en huisroof op die Rust en Vrede-plaas langs die R44 tussen Stellenbosch en Somerset-Wes verlede Donderdag (9 Januarie) het skokgolwe deur die gemeenskap gestuur en die soeklig op polisiëring en veiligheid geplaas.
Die voorval het omstreeks 04:00 plaasgevind toe twee rowers blykbaar ’n woning op die plaas betree het terwyl die twee inwoners nog geslaap het. “Twee mense – ’n man en ’n vrou – is
in die voorval in hul woning deur die twee mans oorrompel terwyl hulle geslaap het,” het lt.kol. René Matthee, ’n woordvoerder vir die Stellenboschpolisie, gesê. “Die huisrowers se gesigte was bedek.”
Sy het bevestig die rowers het deur ’n heining toegang tot die plaas bekom.
Kurt Maske, ’n veiligheidskonsultant wat op die noodoproep gereageer het, het gesê die vrou het daarin geslaag om te ontsnap en het om hulp geroep.
“Al twee slagoffers is in die voorval beseer. Die vrou, wat ’n hoofbesering opgedoen het, het daarin geslaag om te
vlug en buite die woning ’n noodroep na familielede by ’n ander woning op die eiendom gestuur.”
Maske het bygevoeg dat die verdagtes toe te voet met juweliersware, selfone, skootrekenaars en ’n televisieskerm van die toneel gevlug het.
Matthee het bevestig dat die 63-jarige en 64-jarige slagoffers ernstige hoofbeserings opgedoen het, maar kon nie meer inligting oor hul huidige mediese toestand bied nie. “ ’n Saak van huisroof word ondersoek en die verdagtes is steeds voortvlugtend.”
Dié rooftog is deur ’n soortgelyke
voorval by ’n gastehuis op ’n plaas by die Polkadraai-pad voorafgegaan.
Volgens Matthee het dié voorval tussen Sondag (12 Januarie) om 22:00 en Maandag (13 Januarie) om 00:30 plaasgevind.
“Toe die mense in die woning wakker word, was daar drie mans in die huis en twee mans buite. Niemand is in die voorval beseer nie, en die huisrowers het drie selfone, twee skootrekenaars, ’n i-Pad en juweliersware gebuit,” het sy gesê.

Student safety dominated discussions at the Rector-Mayor Forum late last year, with Stellenbosch Municipality undertaking to introduce “safer” routes with additional lighting and CCTV in parts of town.
The first of these routes will include Borcherd Road, where Stellenbosch University (SU) student Jesse Mitchell was murdered in October last year (“Matie se steekmoord wek kommer”, Eikestadnuus, 24 October 2024).
After discussions with the slain student’s family, the municipality decided to name the route after Mitchell, an announcement made by outgoing Executive Mayor Gesie van Deventer during the forum. Other safety routes demarcated by the municipality will be named in consultation with SU students, she said.
The municipality has since approved the request to find safe routes and allocate resources to add more lights
and cameras. The move follows meetings between the municipality and concerned parents about criminal incidents involving students.
Van Deventer also acknowledged a petition, with more than 21 000 signatures, calling for urgent action to improve student safety.
At the forum, which provides an opportunity for SU and the municipality to collaborate on issues affecting the town, Nicolette van den Eijkel, SU’s chief director of facilities management, outlined the institution’s ongoing commitment to student safety.
She explained how SU has increased awareness campaigns through direct interaction, social-media messaging and WhatsApp channels to inform students of services freely available to ensure their safety on campus. These services include SU’s daily shuttle service, which can be booked up to 10 minutes prior to departure, and the additional “walktogether-express” available on the hour
during exam times, starting from 19:00. SU is reviewing its existing safety processes to ensure the best possible response to safety concerns on campus. Additional plans include a survey of students and parents, to ascertain their perceptions about safety on campus and identify options such as the use of cellphone apps, to make it easier to report incidents or seek help. There will also be engagement with students at an indaba on safety early this year.
Ongoing safety measures by the university include campus patrols by a dedicated highly-trained security team, supported by an around-the-clock operational centre that oversees all emergency calls, monitors alarm
activations and CCTV systems. Any reports of potential harm or threats are treated with the highest level of seriousness and urgency.
“These ongoing efforts underscore our commitment to fostering a secure environment with our partners in town and equipping students with the resources and knowledge needed to stay safe throughout their time at the university,” a statement issued by SU read.
“Although crime is a universal concern in our country, and Stellenbosch is not exempted from this, the university will mobilise whatever resources it has at its disposal towards supporting law enforcement in this battle.
“To this end, the university has over the years established a strong partnership with law enforcement and security agencies to ensure comprehensive coverage and safety throughout greater Stellenbosch.”

Marusca Theron het om 18:30 saam met haar man en twee kinders gaan stap toe hulle op ’n gehurkte vrou afkom. “Ek het gedink sy het dalk net ’n groot nood gehad – ek meen elke mens kry sekerlik só ’n
situasie,” sê sy. Die gesin gaan stap gereeld dié roete deur die bebosde gebied, in die rigting van die kruis, wat ook ’n gewilde roete vir fietsryers is. ’n Paar meter verder was daar egter nog talle vroue en kinders. “Ek het nie regtig mans daar gesien nie en wou so min as moontlik oogkontak maak. Ek het regtig nie veilig gevoel nie. Wat vreemd was, jy kan agterkom hulle was al ’n rukkie daar, want daar het klere in die bosse gehang.”

wonder. Sy, soos vele ander wat op haar Facebook-plasing gereageer het, meen dit kan ’n veiligheidskwessie raak. Sommige gereelde stappers sê hulle sien groepe op die berg, maar was onder die onderdruk hulle was ook stappers.
By navraag het Stuart Grobbelaar, die Stellenbosch-munisipaliteit se woordvoerder, verduidelik wetstoepassers is gekontak oor die groep, waarna ondersoek ingestel is. Dit blyk egter die groep mense was vir die dag op die berg vir ’n geestelike
geleentheid. “Die grond behoort aan die Universiteit Stellenbosch en wetstoepassingsbeamptes het die gebied Donderdag 9 Januarie besoek om ondersteuning te bied.
“Geen plakkers of onwettige strukture is op die perseel gevind nie. Die groep mense beweer dat hulle daar vergader het om te bid. Hulle het die gebied op dieselfde dag verlaat,” sê Grobbelaar. Die area word glo naweke gebruik om kerk te hou, met drawwers wat gesê het hulle sien gereeld mense wat vroegoggend byeenkom en sing.

Die voorval word nog ondersoek en dit is onbekend hoe die rowers toegang tot die eiendom verkry het. Niemand is ook in dié huisrooftog in hegtenis geneem nie.
Die Somerset-Wes-polisie het intussen vandeesweek bevestig ’n vlaag rooftogte in en om die Raithby-gebied word deur sy speurtak ondersoek. Volgens lt.kol.
JP du Toit, die waarnemende stasiebevelvoerder vir Somerset-Wes, is sedert die einde van November tot Dinsdag 7 Januarie ses rooftogte by sakeondernemings en huise in dié gebied aangemeld.
Du Toit het gesê die meeste voorvalle was laatnag of in die vroeë oggendure. In al die sake het die oortreders verskeie metodes gebruik om toegang tot die eiendomme te verkry en in sommige is slagoffers aangeval en beseer. Waardevolle eiendom is in dié rooftogte gebuit.

in verband met die voorvalle in hegtenis geneem nie, en meer polisiebeamptes is na die gebied gestuur.
Agri Wes-Kaap het, luidens ’n verklaring ná die aanval op die Rust en Vrede-plaas, sy bekommernis en skok uitgespreek en ’n ernstige beroep aan owerhede gerig vir verhoogde polisieteenwoordigheid, doeltreffende vervolging en gemeenskapsamewerking.
“Die vraag kan met reg gevra word: Is daar nog vertroue in die SuidAfrikaanse Polisiediens en die regstelsel?” lui die verklaring.
“Die werklikheid is dat misdadigers voortgaan met hierdie gruweldade in skynbare verontagsaming van die nagevolge van hul dade, indien enige. Die gebrek aan gevolge vir hierdie ernstige misdade stuur die boodskap dat sulke gedrag ‘aanvaarbaar’ is – iets wat ons as ’n provinsie en land nie kan bekostig nie.”
Die Stellenbosch-polisie het die geleentheid om op dié stellings kommentaar te lewer, van die hand gewys.

Inwoners het hul kommer oor dié voorval op Eikestadnuus se Facebookblad uitgespreek. Een het geskryf: “Dit is jammer, en ’n mens verwag die polisie in Stellenbosch sal als in hul vermoë doen om die gemeenskap veilig te hou. Veiligheid in Stellenbosch is in almal se belang. Maak dit ’n prioriteit!” Nog een het gesê: “Dis ’n groot bekommernis en geheel en al onaanvaarbaar. My gebede is by die twee beseerdes en ek hoop vir volle herstel... Staan saam, Stellenbosch; dít gaan ons nie toelaat nie – nie op ons plase nie en ook nie in ons dorp nie.” Volgens Uys van der Westhuijzen, die voorsitter vir landelike veiligheid by Agri Wes-Kaap, is die gebrek aan doeltreffende vervolging van misdadigers een van die grootste bekommernisse.
“Ons sien keer op keer dat verdagtes óf nie vervolg word nie óf dat die regstelsel hulle nie behoorlik aanspreeklik hou nie,” het hy gesê.
“Is diegene verantwoordelik vir die vervolging van misdadigers werklik doeltreffend in hul taak om as afskrikmiddel vir misdadigers te dien? Ondoeltreffende vervolging en strafoplegging stuur die boodskap dat misdadigers eenvoudig daarmee kan wegkom, en dit is onaanvaarbaar.
“Ons produsente en landelike gemeenskappe verdien beter beskerming en geregtigheid,” meen hy.

Where many simply see plains, hills or mountains Tallulah Glasby sees the rich stories that soil can tell.
Glasby, a student of Stellenbosch University, was recently awarded a grant by the Botanical Education Trust to continue her study of biological soil crusts (biocrusts). She is investigating the role of biocrusts in nutrient cycling, water retention and support of native biodiversity (both plant and invertebrate).
According to Glasby her research started with a love of mosses. “While researching moss I came across studies of moss occurring in these things called biocrusts and just thought it was the coolest thing ever. I did some more research on biocrusts in South Africa and found they were severely understudied, especially in fynbos,
where they were first recorded only in 2012. No studies had been done on them since.”
Despite biocrusts playing an important role in the restoration of degraded soils and agriculture land,
there wasn’t much studied science on the subject. “I started my research in biocrusts at the beginning of 2024, when I began my masters at Stellenbosch University,” Glasby said.
“I investigated the role of biocrusts in nutrient cycling, water retention and support of native biodiversity, both plant and invertebrate.”
Now she is looking at the biocrusts of the Cederberg Mountains, with the help of the funding she was granted by the trust. Academics and research on biocrusts is so lacking, there was no dedicated funds to help bolster research like Glasby’s.
Charles Botha, chairperson of board of trustees, explained the Botanical Education Trust was able to award six grants from the 13 excellent applicants. Along with Glasby, Victoria Roetger of Wits University will continue her work in the Drakensberg Mountains. She is studying plant-pollinator interactions.
Funding from institutions like the Botanical Education Trust is critical for research. “Due to biocrusts being so understudied, there are no academics or researchers dedicated to studying biocrusts and thus no dedicated funds for such projects as yet. My three supervisors work on plants, insects and soils, but not specifically on biocrusts and thus do not have grants specifically to assist with my project costs.
“Therefore, the trust’s aid is truly heaven sent to assist in the funding of my fieldwork and isotope analysis to determine the nutrient profiles of the crusts,” Glasby urges.
Glasby hopes her investigation into the role of biocrusts in nutrient cycling, water retention and support of native biodiversity, will help initiate further research on biocrusts in SA and highlight the importance of these soil communities in unique South African biomes.

Daar was Dinsdag (14 Januarie) ’n gejubel en gejuig in die skoolgange toe 2024 se matrikulante die uitslae van hul laaste skooljaar ontvang het. Voormalige leerders en hul ouers en voogde het vandeesweek by hoërskole saamgedrom om die uitslae te ontvang.
Die raad vir gehalteversekering in die onderwys (Umalusi) verseker jaarliks dat die eksamen vir die nasionale senior sertifikaat (NSS) verloop soos dit moet. Mafu Rakometsi, die hoof van Umalusi, het Maandag (13 Januarie) op ’n mediakonferensie gesê die eksamen het sonder enige groot struikelblokke plaasgevind.
Meer as 1,6 miljoen leerders het die eksamen afgelê met die meeste kandidate (78,5%) wat die NSSeksamen voltooi het. Die res het eksamen afgelê vir onder meer N3- en N4-kwalifikasies.
Volgens David Maynier, die WesKaapse minister van onderwys, het die
provinsie ’n algehele toename van suksesvolle kandidate. Alle onderwysdistrikte in die provinsie het ’n algemene slaagsyfer van meer as 80% behaal. Die voorloperdistrik is Eden en die Sentrale Karoo met ’n 89,28%-slaagsyfer. Die Kaapse Wynlande steek egter nie af nie en hier was die slaagsyfer op met 8,83% tot 83,44% vir 2024.
Die meisies van die Hoër Meisieskool Bloemhof en Rhenish Girls’ High School het weer skoonskip gemaak met ’n 100%-slaagsyfer. Kort op hul hakke was Paul Roos Gimnasium met 99,6% teenoor 2023 se 98,8%.
Die Hoërskool Kayamandi het 253 kandidate gehad wat geslaag het en verbeter die vorige jaar se slaagsyfer (65,6%) tot 85,8%. Makupula Sekondêr, ook in Khayamandi, pronk met ’n slaagsyfer van 91,7% teenoor 2023 se 85,9%. Daar was ook ’n aansienlike styging in die slaagsyfer van Stellenzicht Sekondêre Skool, wat van 57,6% (2023) tot 82,9% verbeter het.
Die Hoërskool Franschhoek het ’n 98,4%-slaagsyfer behaal teenoor 89,8% die vorige jaar. Die Hoërskool Cloetesville se 164 kandidate het ’n 75,6%-slaagsyfer, terwyl Lückhoff Sekondêr ’n 81,2%-slaagsyfer het. Albei skole het ’n positiewe sprong in hul uitslae behaal en het onderskeidelik tot 59,1% en 54,5% verbeter. Calling Academy se matriekklas het op hul voorgangers se prestasie van 82,7% tot 93,3% verbeter.
Groendal Sekondêr in Franschhoek was een van drie plaaslike skole waar die slaagsyfer verswak het. Groendal het van 68,6% tot 62% teruggesak. Die Hoërskool Stellenbosch het van 99,1% tot 97,3% gedaal en Stellenbosch Waldorf School is van 88,9% af tot 87,5% vir 2024. Rakometsi het verduidelik geen vraestelle het uitgelek nie en geen ander ongerymdhede wat die integriteit van eksamens beïnvloed, is aangemeld nie. Daar was egter ’n paar haakplekke elders in die land.
Etlike kwaaddoeners het hulle vandeesmaand vasgeloop toe die lang arm van die munisipale wetstoepassers hulle in ’n japtrap vasgevat het. Volgens die Stellenbosch-munisipaliteit het sy wetstoepassingsbeamptes reeds verskeie suksesse in die nuwe jaar gehad. Dinsdag 7 Januarie is ’n motoris wat waarskynlik gedink het hy kan brandstof in die hande kry sonder om te betaal, vasgevat. Die motoris het vermoedelik weggery van ’n vulstasie in Birdstraat sonder om te betaal. “Ons beamptes het die verdagte agternagesit en hom in Cloetesville aangekeer. By ondersoek het verkeersbeamptes bevestig die bestuurder was onder die invloed van alkohol. Hy is [in hegtenis geneem] en aan die polisie
oorhandig,” lui die munisipale verklaring. Familielede van die motoris het later vir die brandstof betaal.
In ’n gesamentlike optrede saam met die Cloetesville-polisie is twee verdagtes weens die besit van dwelms in hegtenis geneem en boetes uitgeskryf.
In ’n afsonderlike geval is iemand wat van motor-inbraak verdink is, gevang.
In een geval het ’n skool 30 kandidate die eksamen laat skryf ten spyte daarvan dat hulle nie gr.11 geslaag het nie. Matrikulante wat gekul het deur af te kyk, is veral in KwaZulu-Natal en Mpumalanga aangemeld, en in gevalle waar onderwysers leerders gehelp het, is hulle afgedank of geskors.
Musikante van die Kaapstadse Filharmoniese Orkes (KFO) sal van Donderdag 13 tot Sondag 16 Februarie in Franschhoek wees om as deel van hul midsomer-vertonings die vierde jaarlikse Franschhoekkamermusiekfees (FKMF) aan te bied.
Al 10 konserte vind oor vier dae in die historiese Franschhoek NG kerk plaas, wat bekend is vir sy uitstekende akoestiek.
Vanjaar se gaskunstenaar is Miclen LaiPang, die violis van die bekende Trio Zadig, wat geassosieerde kunstenaars van die Queen Elizabeth-musiekkapel in Parys is. Hy is ook die stigter en artistieke direkteur van die Miesbachkamermusiekfees en gee klas aan die Internasionale Kamermusiekakademie van Suid-Duitsland in Ochsenhausen, asook by die Talent Summer Music Courses in Brescia, Italië.
Die konserte sluit meesterstukke van onder meer die kamermusiekrepertoire van Mozart se “Gran Partita”, Beethoven se “Razumovsky-kwartet”, Schumann se “Klavierkwintet”, Mozart se “Klarinetkwintet”, Mendelssohn se “Klaviersekstet”, en ’n kamerweergawe van Beethoven se “Drievoudige Concerto” in.
’n Stuk wat waarskynlik nog nooit
buite Europa uitgevoer is sedert dit ’n paar maande gelede ontdek is nie, is die Mozart Serenade vir twee viole en bas (K. 648), wat deur Suzanne Martens en Philips Martens (viool), met Peter Martens en op die tjello (in plaas van die bas), gespeel sal word.
Peter voer aan dat die werk, wat in Leipzig ontdek is, uit die tyd toe Mozart 10 jaar oud was dateer.
’n Verwysing daarna kan in ’n brief wat Mozart se ouer suster, Maria Anna, op 3 Desember 1801 geskryf het, gevind word. Die werk, wat in September 2024 gepubliseer is, is onlangs by die onthulling van die nuwe Köchelkatalogus in Salzburg uitgevoer.
“My nuuskierigheid het die oorhand gekry en ek het die musiekstuk direk by die Mozarteum in Salzburg, waar ek dit studeer het, bestel. Dit is uiters bekoorlik. Hoewel dit duidelik die werk van ’n kind is, is dit ook duidelik dat dit ’n buitengewone kind was,” voer Peter aan.
Bykomende gaskunstenaars wat aan die konserte sal deelneem, is die konsertmeesters Farida Bacharova en Suzanne Martens, pianiste Esthea Kruger, Pieter Grobler en Francois du Toit, en klavesimbelspeler Erik Dippenaar.
Jong musikante wat ook blootstelling
by die fees sal geniet, is die pianiste Isaac van der Merwe en Gerhard Joubert, die trompetspeler Chad Groepies, wat pas ’n oudisie gewen het om by die KFO aan te sluit, die KFOtjelliste Seul Pearl Yung en Ashlin Grobbelaar, asook die violis Gilah Kellner en harpspeler Ricardo Hinnaker. Peter, die artistieke direkteur en kurator van die fees, is dankbaar vir sy kollegas se toewyding en ondersteuning terwyl hulle in klein groepies, met ’n sterk verbinding van individuele eienskappe en sensitiewe kameraadskap, saamwerk.
Die feesstigters, Nic en Ferda Barrow, is besonder opgewonde oor die reeks musikante wat deel geword het van hierdie jaarlikse fees in die vallei. “Ons weet 2025 se fees sal weer ’n buitengewone gebeurtenis wees, want die konserte is so ’n aangename mengsel van genres wat uitgevoer word deur die beste musikante in die land, asook ’n vertoonvenster vir opkomende sterre.”
Louis Heyneman, uitvoerende hoof van die KFO, spreek sy opgewondenheid uit om weer deel te wees van die fees en gee erkenning aan die stigters, wie se passie vir die kunste dit moontlik maak.

In support of mental health and wellness, the South African Depression and Anxiety Group (Sadag) is launching two new support groups tailored to different needs.
The groups will provide a safe space for individuals living with post-traumatic stress and those coping with the challenges of skin conditions and mental wellness, respectively. Each group is focused on connection, understanding and resilience, offering members a chance to share their experiences and find support.
With these initiatives Sadag continues to expand its commitment to creating inclusive and supportive mental health services.

January. “The reason I started the support group is my own struggles with severe acne from a very young age. Usually, people tend to fixate on your physical imperfections that they forget that beneath the surface there’s a real person with real feelings.
“For anyone who has any kind of skin condition, they can tell you that they seldom get asked how they are doing emotionally or mentally, the focus is always on their physical appearance. So that is why I want to create a safe space where we get to fight silent battles loudly.”

Stellemploy will train 12 unemployed young people (age 18 – 35 years) in basic plumbing skills The training includes installation of sanitary appliances, installation of cold-water pipes, pipe fittings installation of hot water cylinders. The training will be conducted over a period of 40 working days (10 February –4 April 2025). This course is accredited with the QCTO (Quality Council for Trades & Occupation).
What does the training include?
It includes all training, training material, refreshments and daily transport from the Stellemploy offices (Old Lückhoff Skool, Banghoek Road) to the Stellemploy Training Centre and back Life Skills training is part of the programme (no stipends will be paid).

Karate students of Cloetesville were among the various karateka who took part in a national mass-grading event recently.
Last month the youngsters were part of the 282 students gathered and linedup at Parow Civic Centre on Saturday 7 December. The Cloetesville students had a 100% pass rate. Throughout the entire grading test the young karatekas performed exceptionally well in displaying their progress. All the little warriors conquered the curriculum requirements and will progress to the next level of understanding pertaining to the art of Bushido or the Warrior Way. Before commencing the grading the Chief Instructor Selwyn Rhoda Kansho of Karate-Zen International explained the proceedings before issuing a few junior black-belt awards. He also commended parents for their interest and support, acknowledging martial arts as being integral to the development and growth of their children.
In Cloetesville on Monday 9 December a certification ceremony also took place. Such events are also good for drawing new recruitments to the free classes and showcasing the benefits of martial arts.
To this end, Shihan Garfield Bergstedt, Winelands regional instructor (072 785 6448), and Sensei Marlon Davidse, instructor of Cloetesville dojo instructor (072 509 7984) are on hand. Classes will start next week.

Volkswagen Tuareg gewen het, het vanjaar in sy 22ste Dakarren weggespring. Hy was dié keer die 14de keer in ’n Toyota Gazoo Racing-Hilux, maar moes halfpad halt roep nadat sy navigator, Dirk von Zitzewitz, saam met wie hy die 14de keer gejaag het, ’n nekwerwel ernstig beseer het toe hulle Sondag (12 Januarie) oor baie rowwe terrein gejaag het.
Dit was ook De Villiers se laaste Dakar-ren vir die Toyota Gazoo Racing-renspan nadat hy in die 2012-ren die eerste keer agter die stuur van ’n TGRHilux ingeskuif het.
