Significant increase in digital-banking fraud

Cloetesville police have reported a significant rise in digital banking fraud

They warn members of the public to be as vigilant with their online security as they are with their security at home And, if they are victims of online crime, they should report it to their local police station Cybercrime, such as online fraud, is a crime that must be reported in much the same way that other crimes are reported, so they may be investigated

Fraud is the most frequently recorded type of financial crime in South Africa

How to protect yourself from fraud and scams:

Never respond to emails or cellphone messages appearing to be from your bank, which request your personal details

• Remember, no bank will ever ask you to confirm or update your account details by email

• Never provide your online ID, password or PIN to anyone, and never write them down or share them.

• Do not save your internet banking password on your desktop

• Avoid doing internet banking in public places, such as internet cafés, or on any computer that can be accessed by people you do not know

• Only provide your credit card details to reputable companies

• Never send money or give credit card or online account details to any-

one you do not know and trust.

• Phishing and fraud scams are deceptive ways to obtain personal information such as passwords, identity numbers and credit card details by calls, email or cellphone messages that look as if they come from a trusted source, such as a bank

The police urge people to be very vigilant when doing online transactions or buying goods

Bergzicht marks 33 years

Bergzicht Training and Development proudly marked its 33rd anniversary with a special event celebrating its visionary founder, Cecile Kotze, and unveiling its newly renovated training facilities, made possible through the generous support of the Stellenbosch Municipality.

Last Wednesday (5 March), Bergzicht CEO Renske Minnaar welcomed esteemed guests, including Councillor Lwando Nkamisa (Corporate Services), Councillor Tamryn Kumm (Youth, Sports and Culture) and members of Kotze’s family -- Coia de Villiers, Helena Immelman, Rheta Kotze and Pieter Kotze. Also attending were key members of the renovation project team: Lonwabo Mhlabo (MIH Construction site engineer), Adolfo Linates (heritage consultant and architect), Ehrel Maletzky (project manager) and Yolande van den Berg (head of contract management) Minnaar also acknowledged the Hanns Seidel Foundation, one of the Stellenbosch NGO’s longstanding and most dedicated funders. Marlene Barnard, representing the foundation, expressed appreciation for Bergzicht’s impactful work and announced the possibility of new funding for the development of a new training kitchen, further enhancing Bergzicht’s ability to deliver top-quality vocational education.

Reflecting on Bergzicht’s beginnings, Minnaar said: “Thirty-three years ago, on 6 March 1992, Cecile Kotze and her colleagues, Minnie van der Merwe and Meril Ginsburg, had the incredible vision to establish Bergzicht. Today, we remain as strong as ever, continuing to uplift individuals through skills development.”

Stellenbosch Rotaract Club takes flight

Special recognition was given to Cheryl Farao of Remgro, a longstanding supporter, and Corlia Jacobs, one of Kotze’s earliest colleagues. Bergzicht also welcomed Visit Stellenbosch, represented by Nicolette Booyens and Jenna Moses, highlighting the organisation’s valued role in social development.

Hannes Koornhof, Bergzicht board member, paid tribute to Kotze’s profound legacy: “Cecile’s founding of Bergzicht was never about personal recognition – it was about creating opportunities for others to build better lives through employable skills. Her commitment to empowering individuals continues to inspire us today.”

Adding a personal touch to the tribute, Immelman, Kotze’s daughter, shared heartfelt memories of her mother’s passion for community development: “For 15 years Bergzicht brought my mother immense joy. She also founded the Libertas Choir, a reflection of her deep commitment to uplifting people through education and the arts.”

Cheryl Farao of Remgro and David Jantjies, who was the event’s master of ceremonies, were in a celebratory mood

A key highlight of the event was the unveiling of Bergzicht’s newly renovated buildings, a testament to the institution’s ongoing commitment to enhancing training facilities. “We are deeply grateful to Stellenbosch Municipality for their generous investment in our institution,” said Kathy Harris, chairperson of the Bergzicht Board.

“These upgrades will ensure our students are trained in a modern, wellequipped environment, preparing them for successful careers. As the landlord and custodian of our Bergzicht campus, Stellenbosch Municipality has played a crucial role in the successful completion of this vital restoration and preservation project.”

The Rotary Club of Stellenbosch recently celebrated a major milestone with the official chartering of the new Rotaract Club of Stellenbosch.
