tytjie is.

Seldsame blom

‘herrys’ in berg

Cash injection for STF

The team that keeps the trails of Stellenbosch neat and tidy was given a financial boost thanks to a R20000 donation by trail runners last week.

The Stellenbosch Trail Fund (STF) is an NPO working to create, improve and maintain all hiking, biking and running trails in and around Stellenbosch.

According to Julian Veermeer, acting crew captain and co-founder of Stellies Shake Out (SSO), the City of Oaks boasts some of the best trail networks in the province.

“We are very privileged to call this place home. Our trails would not be the same if not for the hard work of the STF team maintaining and building new trails. Therefore it is only fitting to have them as our official sponsor partner,” he says.

SSO was established in 2019 with a handful of like-minded runners who came together once a week for a social trail run along the trails surrounding Coetzenberg. Fast forward a few years and now the weekly runs attract almost 200 runners each week. Through weekly donations, the SSO runners collected the funds which were handed over last Thursday (27 February).

Ernst Gouws, a director of the

STF, says volunteers take care of more than 50km of trails in the area and seven trailbuilders are employed. STF receives no funding for their work, meaning donations like that of the SSO social running crew is of utmost importance.

“Although the trails technically belong to Stellenbosch Municipality, we are the ones taking care of the upkeep and maintenance to make sure the paths are usable and safe,” Gouws explains. He says it is especially gratifying to receive the donation for the very runners who use the trails. “This is a full circle situation. The runners, more than anyone else, understand the importance of what we do and benefit from it.”

Generally, the SSO runners’ home base is Coetzenberg, but they do tackle other trails like Banhoek Conservancy, Idas Valley, Eden Forest, Jonkershoek, and Botmaskop.

Veermeer says there are three speed running groups, and he encourages first timers joining or those new to trail running, to join the social groups. This also means walking the hills, but running the flats.

“After enjoying an hour-long trail run and a drink together, we generally have a group of around 20 runners who go to Ginos, a famous pizzeria in Dorp Street, and grab a pizza afterwards. All are welcome.”

Reusagtige kragrekenings skok

Reaching for soccer dream

Stellenbosch has an abundance of young football players with skills and Keano Julius hopes to be one of the many players looking to show off his skills.

The 15-year-old from Cloetesville is among the various young players who was selected by BT Football Academy Club to showcase his skill in Spain in July. Despite this wonderful opportunity the price tag that goes with the trip is R50000 and Keano needs help getting the funds to get on the plane. The trip takes place from 6 to 16 July.

Keano, a Grade 10 learner at Cloetesville High School, has been playing soccer since he could walk and started passing the ball at the tender age of one. He was part of Spes Bona FC for six years, but these days he is proudly represents BT Football Academy.

The right wing has always had a love for the game, in part thanks to his father’s love of football and he still has an uncle playing for the Glen Eagles FC. “I like to practice with my uncle and hope to one day play on the television like my favourite footballer Cristiano Ronaldo,”

Keano says. His favourite team is Real Madrid, which means it is no surprise the local star hopes to visit his the club’s home country.

Mother Michelle says the trip would be a highlight for the teenager. “It is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for my child to live the dream that he always talks about. He loves soccer from the bottom of his heart. He is on the field every day and his mind is always on soccer,” she says.

Race organiser Michael de Haast of Pure Adventures welcomed Stanley’s involvement.

With its challenging terrain and spectacular scenery, the 2025 K-Way MaxiRace Cape Winelands promises to be a highlight on the global trail-running calendar.

Runners will embark on the gruelling 75 km race from Franschhoek at 05:00 and will cross the line at Laerskool

Double win for Coronations women’s team in T20 league

Tasmin Cupido

The women's team of Coronations Cricket Club continued their dominant run this season, racking up two victories in their T20 league matches in Pniël on Sunday (2 March).

The team recorded two 10-wicket victories in their second-round clashes against Caledon CC and Grabouw CC at the Groot Drakenstein Sports Club.

The triumphs places the Pniël side firmly at the top of the group, and one step closer to them reaching the final of the Cricket Boland Women’s T20 competition.

In the morning match against Caledon CC, Coronations won the toss and chose to field, with the bowlers delivering a dominant performance. The visitors were eventually all bowled out for 68 runs, thanks to attacking and disciplined bowling by Chantelle van Schoor (2/11) and Doni Lin (1/15).

In their innings, the Coronations opening pair of Delmari Hoffman (28*) and Jolene Hendricks (19*) needed just eight overs to chase down the target, as they led their side to a well-deserved victory.

In the match against Grabouw CC later that afternoon, the Pniël lasses followed the same

formula, winning the toss and sending their opposition in to bat. This time though, Danya Laas (3/10) and Maudeen Dampies (2/7) paved the way for the team, as they managed to bowl out the team from the Elgin Valley for 46 runs in 17 overs.

On the batting front, Hoffman (33*) and Christine Tomlinson (8*) charged ahead to take their team across the line in just 4.3 overs.

The team will again be in action against Caledon and Grabouw in their final pool matches on Sunday (9 March), with the matches set to be played at the Elgin-Grabouw Country Club.

Stellenbosch to host South Africa’s top golf tournament

The 115th Investec South African Open will be played at Stellenbosch Golf Club (SGC), with the Cape’s fourth oldest golf club hosting the national open for the second time in its history at the end of February 2026.

SGC last hosted the Investec South African Open in 1999, when local favourite David Frost won the title at the golf club where he grew up and used to caddie for his father.

“Investec believes strongly that the Investec South African Open should travel around the country as a showcase of South African professional golf, and to allow the majority of South Africans to see and be inspired by this out-of-the-ordinary championship which has such a proud history,” said Peta Dixon,

Investec head of sponsorships.

“After being founded in 1974, one of Investec’s first regional offices opened in Cape Town in 1980, so we have a long and proud history in the Western Cape. We now have offices in Cape Town, Stellenbosch, Paarl, Tyger Valley, Knysna and George. We look forward to bringing the Investec South African Open back to SGC for the first time in 26 years.”

Chris van der Merwe, general manager of SGC, said the club was delighted to welcome the Investec South African Open back to its fairways in the magnificent Winelands of the Western Cape.

“We are incredibly honoured to have been selected as the host venue for the 2026 Investec South African Open and look

forward to showcasing this prestigious championship as well as the beauty of Stellenbosch and the Cape Winelands to a global audience,” he said.

"As one of the oldest golf clubs in the Cape, and indeed in SA, SGC has hosted some major professional and amateur tournaments over the years and produced some of SA’s finest professionals such as Justin Harding, Oliver Bekker, Keenan Davidse, JJ Senekal and Hennie O’Kennedy. We’re looking forward to what will be a wonderful next edition in the proud history of this great championship.”

The Investec South African Open is co-sanctioned by the Sunshine Tour and DP World Tour and forms part of the DP World Tour’s International Swing.
