Fake booze factory raided

Police are cracking down on illegal alcohol manufactors and distributors with the latest success being one in Faure last Thursday (2 October).

According to police, members of Operation Shanela II in the province followed up information about a facility illegally manufacturing and distributing alcohol.

The officers descended on a farm located in Faure, where they uncovered a fully operational illegal alcohol manufacturing facility inside a building on the property.

Provincial police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk said five Malawian suspects, aged 26 to 45, were arrested during the operation, along with the seizure of large quantities of illicit alcohol and manufacturing equipment

Among the items found and confiscated were equipment used in the production of counterfeit or unregulated liquor, plastic containers filled with chemicals, hundreds of empty and pre-filled liquor bottles, industrial-grade bottling and capping machinery, and boxes.

On further investigation, the police visited a storage facility in Woodstock, which they suspected is linked to the one in Faure. Here a Chinese national (53) was arrested and a substantial quantity of illegal, pre-packaged alcohol, suspected to be ready for distribution, was found and confiscated.

The action comes after just weeks after a joint operation by Maitland Flying Squad and the Klapmuts Farm Watch led to the arrest of seven foreign nationals for the alleged manufacturing of illegal alcohol on Monday 8 September. In the Klapmuts operation police seized bottles, machines and ethanol

The suspects are expected to be

charged for the contravention of the Liquor Act.

Provincial police commissioner, Lieutenant-General Thembisile Patekile commended the officers involved in the operation, saying it is in line with the provincial policing approach to close outlets that are illegally manufacturing and distributing liquor. “These operations will be sustained to eradicate alcohol abuse which remains one of the contributing factors to serious and violent crimes, especially over weekends.”

Nomads chipping in

BarendWilliams

It was par for the course when Boland Nomads chipped in for charity at Strand Golf Club during their annual Andrew Mentis Golf Day last Thursday (2 October)

The charity golf event saw an above-average 140 players drive around the coastal course in search of birdies and eagles, raising funds for two organisations that need support

“I again realised how blessed I am to be part of an organisation where our members and their guests never hesitate to open their hearts when asked to help those less fortunate in our community,” said Marius Swanepoel, vice-chairperson of the Boland Nomads

The Nomads Golf Club of South Africa, the world’s largest non-profit charity golf club, was formed in 1960 and now has 12 clubs across South Africa The organisation is built on two main pillars: caring for those less fortunate and promoting golf in SA.

Each year, Nomads clubs host golf days in honour of founding member Andrew Mentis, with each vice-captain coordinating fundraising activities for regional causes

As the second-largest Nomads club in SA, Swanepoel started planning a year ago, visiting several Boland organisations before selecting two Stellenbosch beneficiaries working with vulnerable

children

The first beneficiary is Vineyard Houses, a registered NPO providing homes for neglected, abused and abandoned children

The second is Samaritan’s Feet South Africa, which provides shoes for impoverished children

Swanepoel earmarked items ranging from beds and furniture to a stove for Vineyard Houses, while aiming to purchase an donate school, casual and sports shoes through Samaritan’s Feet

After obtaining wishlists, he set a target of R170 000 for both charities A committee of Boland Nomads members organised the golf day with sponsors including King Pie, which provided lunch

The day concluded with a prize-giving and dinner featuring an auction One item was a coffee table book of Gary Player’s 65-year role in Nomads, which

The event exceeded expectations, raising more than R200 000 for both organisations

letter from a reader

the workers and I then saw what was happening They were actually removing the pavers from the middleman just to replace it with artificial grass instead.

This made me see red Why would the municipality waste taxpayers money on removing pavers from the curbside (which is going to last forever) and replace it with artificial grass that will probably only look new for one year?

How can the council think that this is a good idea and why would anybody at council approve of this wastage whilst there are people sleeping in the street a few blocks away, who are in desperate need of the money that is washed down the drain with this ludicrous idea? I have since learned that there are other areas in town that were also covered with this plastic grass (corner of Piet Retief and Dorp streets)

The majority of South African towns are struggling to provide basic services to their community but in Stellenbosch we have so much money that we can waste it on replacing curbside pavers with plastic grass to make the town centre look pretty for a year Are we trying to impress the few tourists that come to Stellenbosch and who are driving along Strand Street in their fancy buses?

What is going to happen when this grass is trampled, dirty and faded after a year? Is the council going to replace

it with pavers again?

It is an absolute shame to see how money is wasted in this town – from the annual flowers next to the Braak to the Art Mile next to the Eerste River and now plastic grass on our curbs Francois Bossert, VIA EMAIL

Stellenbosch Municipality responds: “We are deeply sorry to hear that the reader does not like the flowerbeds at the Braak or on the traffic islands We will also share his frustrations about the Stellenbosch Art Mile with the creators and installers of the project.

“We believe most residents and visitors do, however, enjoy the flowerbeds, traffic circles, walkways and the Art Mile.

“Natural grass unfortunately only thrives for about three months of the year, after which it becomes dull or trampled down. Pavers are often stolen, creating ongoing replacement costs.

“The use of small sections of artificial grass combined with perennials, indigenous plants, succulents and colourful flowers helps create a more vibrant and attractive space throughout the year

“Indeed, as the reader mentions, most SA towns are struggling to provide even the most basic of services but here in Stellenbosch, we deliver some of the best services in the country. We use public funds for public good, unlike in many other towns.”

In Cloetesville, a quiet movement is taking root; one built on discipline, respect and family unity

The Karate-Zen Cloetesville teams have long believed that every strong student stands on the shoulders of a supportive parent

During the most recent grading on Thursday 2 October the dojo celebrated more than skill and promotion, but also celebrated the parents behind the belts

“They are the ones who make sure uniforms are washed, children are on time, and minds are ready They sit through long sessions, encourage through doubt, and teach by example that growth takes patience,”

explained dojo leader Garfield Bergstedt

“Their involvement is shaping leader children – young people who carry humility, focus, and empathy from the dojo into the community ”

One parent, in particular, encapsulates what true learning looks like Tersia September trains alongside her son, Taylor They both started at white belt, ungraded, side by side, in the same class of juniors

There are no other senior white belts at the local dojo, yet she stands among the children, fully focused, respectful and committed Bergstedt said her humility brought him to tears “In all my years in martial arts,

I have never seen such quiet dedication – a mother learning with her child, bowing together, growing together It reminded me that karate is not about the belt around your waist, but about the spirit within your heart ”

Parents like Tersia embody what Karate-Zen Cloetesville strives for – families learning together, growth through humility, leadership through service, and community upliftment through shared discipline “We as instructors provide the fertile environment and tools, but it is the parents who make the soil rich To all our parents – ‘thank you’ You are the unseen teachers behind every bow, every breath, and every act of courage ”

Gymnasts vault to national stage

A total of 49 athletes from Stellenbosch Gymnastics and two of the club’s coaches have qualified to represent the Western Cape at the South African National Gymnastics Championships in Pretoria.

This year marks a special milestone for the club in it’s 11 years of existence, as it is the most gymnasts who have qualified for

the competition, which is held from Thursday 2 to Thursday 9 October. Their achievement is the result of many hours of hard work, dedication, and passion for the sport.

“We are incredibly proud of our gymnasts who will be competing at nationals,” the club’s coaches said in a statement.

“Their determination and team-

work have brought them this far, and we are excited to see them showcase their talent among the best in the country.”

Stellenbosch Gymnastics, based at The Shed at Spier Wine Farm, wishes all the athletes the very best of luck at the championships and looks forward to celebrating their performances upon their return.
