In a statement released on Friday 2 October, the party said it would bring a motion of no confidence against mayor Jeremy Fasser (DA). “The decision follows serious allegations of abuse of power relating to municipal resources, administrative personnel and budget processes that were used to advance the DA’s electoral interests. The ANC believes these allegations require a transparent council debate, independent investigation and full public accountability,” the statement read. Among the six allegations the ANC lays at Fasser’s door is a written instruction to his fellow DA councillors to prioritse projects that will serve as “blue capital we need to win the next election”. Allegations of meetings with municipal staff, changes to the municipal adjustment budget, supposed administrative interference, and the possible manipulation of municipal funds to benefit the DA, must be investigated, the ANC urged. FINAL COUNCIL MEETING The council is in recess, but a “final” council meeting by the current council is set for Wednesday 21 October. At the council’s last meeting in August, Speaker Quinton Smith said the recess came at the

request of council members who sought to focus on canvassing and campaigning obligations in the lead up to the LGE on Wednesday 4 November. Emergency council meetings can be scheduled if required. The ANC added municipal government cannot be an instrument for party dominance, personal benefit or the preservation of a political office. “Roads, lighting, maintenance and public facilities must be prioritised according to community needs, developmental priorities and public interest, rather than the electoral interests of a governing party. “The ANC will ask council to preserve all relevant records, refer the financial and ethical allegations for investigation, protect witnesses and whistleblowers, and support independent scrutiny of the disputed budget and operational decisions.” The party called on other parties to support its motion by prioritising the people of Stellenbosch and democratic accountability. In response to the allegations municipal spokesperson Stuart Grobbelaar said the municipality will not be drawn into political mudslinging in the run-up to elections, nor would it give credence to unsubstantiated allegations. ‘POLITICAL GRANDSTANDING’ “If there are legitimate concerns regarding the conduct of any councillor or municipal official there are established and appropriate formal processes through which such concerns can be raised, considered and investigated. Yaël Malgas Die nuwe taktiese reaksie- (TRU) en honde-eenhede van die Stellenbosch-munisipaliteit het reeds bewys dat hul byt nog beter as hul blaf is – nog voor dié eenhede verlede Donderdag (1 Oktober) amptelik op Die Braak in Stellenbosch bekendgestel is. Die Wes-Kaap se jongste honde-eenheid het verlede maand reeds verskeie dwelmverwante suksesse gevier, danksy Juno en sy hanteerder, Anwar Jansen, wat op Saterdag 5 September hul eerste sukses in Klapmuts behaal het. Jansen en Juno het ’n voertuig in dié dorp deursoek en op Mandrax en tik afgekom (“K9-eenheid slaan toe”, Eikestadnuus, 10 September). Verskeie honde-eenhede is ’n gesamentlike veiligheidsprojek van die plaaslike munisipaliteite en die Wes-Kaapse regering. REEDS ’N OPBRENGS GELEWER Volgens Anroux Marais, Wes-Kaapse minister vir polisietoesig en gemeenskapsveiligheid, kom die honde-eenheid op ’n “kritiese tyd” vir areas soos Kayamandi en Cloetesville wat verhoogde vlakke van bende-verwante en georganiseerde misdaad opgeteken het. Die taktiese reaksie- en honde-eenhede werk reeds saam met die plaaslike polisie en private veiligheidsvennote. Die viervoetige misdaadbestryders wat gespesialiseerde opleiding ontvang het om dwelms en vuurwapens op te spoor, is Juno, Ezmin, Jeff en Louis. Stellenbosch se burgemeester, Jeremy Fasser, het ’n duidelike boodskap vir misdadigers wat “glo hulle kan ons gemeenskappe dreig” en “die mense van Stellenbosch terroriseer” – en dit was dat

hul tyd verstreke is. “Vandag sê ons ons sal nie toekyk terwyl ons gemeenskappe ly nie, want agter elke misdaad is daar ’n mens. Daar was ’n vrou wat op pad werk toe in Cloetesville vermoor is. Sy was nie ’n statistiek nie, sy was ’n moeder, sy was iemand se dogter, sy was iemand se suster, sy was iemand se vriendin,” het hy gesê oor die skietdood van Harlene Meyer, wat in 2024 op pad werk doodgeskiet is (“Werkende ma sterf in wilde skietery,” Eikestadnuus, 27 Junie 2024). VERSTERKING VAN VEILIGHEID Fasser sê hoewel polisiëring die mandaat van die polisie bly, was die munisipaliteit genoodsaak om die TRU- en honde-eenheid vir die veiligheid van Stellenbossers te vestig. Honde-eenhede is reeds suksesvol in die Swartland-, Mosselbaai- en die Overstrand-munisipale gebiede op die been gebring. Deur Marais se departement is R400 000 in 2025-’26 belê en ’n verdere R1 miljoen in 2026-’27 ter ondersteuning van

die honde-eenhede. Die plaaslike munisipaliteit beoog om die Stellenbosch-honde-eenheid met ’n teelprogram uit te brei en só buurmunisipaliteite te help om hul eie honde-eenhede te vestig. “[Die eenhede] gaan oor die versterking van die veiligheidsekosisteem binne die munisipale gebied. Dit is belangrik vir sigbare polisiëring, vinnige reaksie, die ondersteuning van ons gemeenskappe, die omsien van munisipale infrastruktuur en ons openbare ruimtes,” sê Fasser. “Belangriker nog, is dat diegene wat poog om die veiligheid in ons gemeenskappe te beproef, verstaan dat daar ’n vasberade en gekoördineerde reaksie vir die veiligheidsuitdagings in die munisipale gebied is.” Alan Winde, premier van die Wes-Kaap, was ook teenwoordig en sê in ’n provinsie wat poog om meer werksgeleenthede te skep, meer beleggers te lok en florerende inwoners te hê, bly veiligheid ’n daaglikse uitdaging. Winde se waarskuwing aan misdadigers, veral dwelmhandelaars, was dat die nuwe eenhede hulle sekerlik sal uitsnuffel en sal laat boet.

From page 1 “Political grandstanding and the selective leaking of private, party-aligned WhatsApp messages are not a substitute for these formal processes.” Fasser confirmed he is aware of “the ANC’s frivolous threat of a motion of no confidence”, adding procedure will be followed to deal with the matter. “It would seem that service delivery and good governance are such foreign concepts to the ANC that when they see it in action, it looks to them like electioneering,” Fasser said. “As President Ramaphosa has admitted publicly, well run municipalities tend to be where the DA governs and Stellenbosch has proven time and time again, that it’s one of the best run municipalities.” Grobbelaar said there is nothing untoward about political parties using internal WhatsApp groups to discuss party matters and political strategy. “We can, however, categorically state that the municipal manager [Geraldine Mettler], directors and se-

nior managers have never attended a party caucus meeting or participated in political strategy discussions,” he declared. “On occasion the municipal manager may have been requested to join a meeting to provide clarity or explain a specific matter relating to the municipal administration. This should not be misconstrued as participation in a political caucus or its discussions.” In a stern warning to all councillors, the municipality noted that all parties contesting the 2026 LGE signed the Electoral Code of Conduct with the IEC. “We trust that all parties will respect this commitment and that Stellenbosch Municipality and its administration will not be used as political tools during the election campaign,” Grobbelaar said. The ANC said it will submit the vote of no convince against Fasser as soon as all the relevant evidence is gathered. Meanwhile, Fasser said his focus remains governing in the best interest of all Stellenbosch’s residents.

‘Hulp aan alle diere is my passie’ Yaël Malgas “Frieda, jy kan nie die hele wêreld help nie.” Dit was die woorde van Frieda Moolman se ma, Ryna, maar sy het dit nooit regtig geglo nie. Nou het Moolman besluit om diereliefhebbers in Cloetesville vandeesmaand te help met ’n gratis Tick & Flea-uitreik. “My liefde vir diere het lank gelede begin voor ek by Pet Food City Stellenbosch begin werk het,” vertel Moolman (49). Hier by die plaaslike onderneming ken talle Stellenbossers haar as Frieds wat daagliks help met alles van hondekos uitkies tot die regte pilletjie vind vir troeteldiere se kwale. Moolman verduidelik sy poog om die projek soveel meer as net ’n uitreik te maak. “Dit gaan oor diere, maar net soveel oor mense – oor omgee, respek en om iemand se las ’n bietjie ligter te maak,” verduidelik sy. Moolman werk sedert 2021 by Pet Food City Stellenbosch. Haar liefde vir diere is reeds van kindsbeen af ingeburger en haar aanvanklike plan was om ’n veearts te word, of dierewetenskap te studeer, “maar die lewe het ander planne met my gehad”.

PASSIE VIR ALLE DIERE Tog het die liefde vir diere nooit gekwyn nie. Sy het meer geleer van diere en seker gemaak haar werk het met diere te doen. “Voor Pet Food City het ek in ’n troeteldierwinkel in Noordwes

gewerk en gehelp om ’n paar winkels daar oop te maak. Ek het ook nou saam met Onderstepoort gewerk, op teelplase, met koi’s en ander visse en op ’n groot voëlplaas waar ons onder meer macaws, African Greys, ringnekke en ander voëls geteel het. Ek het dus ook baie ervaring van die grootmaak van baba-voëls.” Moolman het ’n passie vir alle diere en het jare terug twee vierpotige vriende aangeneem wat steeds ’n baie belangrike deel van haar lewe is. “Diere is in my hart en in my siel. Vir my is hulle nooit net ‘diere’ nie – hulle is familie.” Dit was juis hierdie liefde wat Moolman aangespoor het om ander plaaslike diereliefhebbers te help.

Elke troeteldier-eienaar sal ook met ’n geskenkpakkie wegstap wat onder meer vlooibehandeling, hondekos, wondsalf, bederfies sal bevat. “Almal wat tydens die uitreik gehelp word, sal opgeteken word en ek gaan daarna weer met hulle in verbinding wees om te hoor hoe dit met hulle en hul diere gaan. Elke geskenkpakkie sal ook ’n koepon vir hondekos bevat vir daardie tye wanneer die lewe moeilik raak.” Moolman sê die dag gaan nie oor handouts nie, maar liewer om ’n pad saam met die betrokkenes te begin stap. Haar groot droom is om haar uitreikprogram uit te brei en Moolman sê daar is reeds planne om iets soortgelyks in Idasvallei aan te bied.

NIE NET UITDEEL EN HUIS TOE GAAN “Ek kan nie meer deur die lewe loop met oogklappe aan nie. Ek sien en hoor dinge wat niemand wil sien of hoor nie en wanneer ek dit weet, kan ek nie net my rug draai nie. Ek dink, maak planne, vra mense om hulp en ek probeer uitvind hoe ek iemand se las ligter kan maak. “Jaarliks wanneer die warmer somerseisoen begin, sit ons met die groot probleem van bosluise en vlooie. Ek het lank en hard daaroor gedink en het gedink ek wou nie net een dag ’n paar produkte uitdeel en huis toe gaan nie.” En daarom die Tick & Flea-uitreik wat ook ’n opvoedkundige deel het. Op Saterdag 17 Oktober sal Moolman dus Cloetesvillers help om produkte vir hul troeteldiere reg en veilig te gebruik.

Slawers rises all the way to bread sommelier A local baker has made history by becoming the first person on the continent to earn the prestigious title of bread sommelier from Germany’s National Bakers Academy. Ricardo Slawers, head baker at La Motte Bakery in Franschhoek, completed the demanding course in Weinheim, where he studied everything from the 22 000-year history of bread culture to advanced sensory skills and food pairing techniques. The La Motte team member of 12 years, submitted a thesis on mosbolletjies, the traditional Cape bread that has deep roots in the winelands, bringing international recognition to this heritage recipe. Slawers admits the experience pushed him far beyond his comfort zone. He travelled to Germany without knowing what to expect from the challenging programme, relying heavily on positive self-affirmation in the early stages. UNDERSTAND BREAD “What a wonderful opportunity and challenge this was for me. More than the bread focus and baking, I had to trav-

el, didn’t know what to expect from the challenging course and in the beginning, especially, positive self-affirmation was very important,” he says. The doubts faded as he immersed himself in the course content. Now back home, he wants to share his knowledge with South Africans and help them understand bread as part of a wholesome diet and cultural heritage. The National Bakers Academy has presented the bread sommelier course since 2015. The internationally recognised programme accepts only bakery owners, head bakers, instructors and experienced professionals. More than 300 people from 16 nations have graduated, making the title a symbol of excellence in the baking world. Students learn to refine their tasting skills, master global bread styles, understand ingredients at a molecular level, and develop storytelling abilities for the media. La Motte CEO Kobie Lochner says the estate is proud of Slawers’ achievement, which reflects his dedication and the quality of products guests enjoy at the artis-

anal bakery. “For Ricardo to have completed a bread sommelier course in Germany, with a thesis exploring mosbolletjies, is particularly meaningful. This much-loved heritage bread has deep roots in the Cape winelands, and its story is closely intertwined with our wine culture,” Lochner says. FROM FARM TO TABLE Markus Färbinger, who guided Slawers through his transformation as a baker, calls this a great moment for professional artisan baking in SA. He notes that La Motte operates a unique operation where grain grows, gets harvested, milled and baked on one farm. “I don’t know of a single bakery in the world that grows, harvest, mills and bakes on one farm. And at La Motte that all happens in a very stylish, historical relevant and almost poetic way.” Slawers now leads the La Motte Bakery team, producing a daily variety of fresh breads from the on-site wood-fired oven for an enthusiastic following of bread lovers.

Musikant in 3 produksies Yaël Malgas Om in ’n enkelproduksie by die Toyota Woordfees betrokke te wees is sommige kunstenaars se droom, maar die fluit-speler Malané Hofmeyr-Burger spog vanjaar met drie produksies by die plaaslike fees.

Hofmeyr-Burger se talente is te sien in Claude Bolling se Suite vir fluit en jazz-trio, die Hofmeyrs in Konsert: Van liefde en die nag, asook Cantabile met die pianis Elna van der Merwe, te sien. “Die dobbelsteentjies het net reg geval en al drie produksies is deur die aansoekproses en uiteindelik goedgekeur,” meen Hofmeyr-Burger oor haar optredes.

Hofmeyr-Burger kom uit ’n musikale gesin en haar 91-jarige pa hou steeds sy vingers fiks deur daagliks nog klavier te speel. Sy verduidelik om in drie produksies te wees, is vir haar besonders, veral namate werk vir klassieke musikante al hoe skaarser word. “Dit word al hoe moeiliker. Hier waar ek is in Johannesburg, in Pretoria is daar nie meer ’n voltydse orkes nie. Die werk het al hoe minder geraak en indien jy dalk ’n stoel in ’n orkes kry, dan is dit slegs op ’n kontrakbasis,” sê Hofmeyr-Burger. Daarom het Hofmeyr-Burger haar vaardighede en werk oor die afgelope jare uitgebrei en benewens haar werk as musiekonderwyser het sy ook Logoterapie, ’n vorm van eksistensiële terapie wat deur die Oostenrykse neuroloog en psigiater Viktor Frankl ontwikkel is, deur die Universiteit van Suid-Afrika gestudeer. Tog bly musiek haar groot passie. “Musikant wees is 20% talent en 80% harde werk. Niks kom vanself nie en daar is geen kortpad nie. Dit beteken daagliks oefen, jou doel voor oë hou en dissipline.” En met drie uiteenlopende produksies waaraan sy deel het, het Hofmeyr-Burger seker gemaak sy sit die ure in om al drie vertonings onder die knie te kry.

“Die Claude Bolling-produksie bevat klassieke werk vir die fluit, maar dan is daar die jazz met die klavier (Charl du Plessis), tromme (Peter Auret) en bas (Werner Spies). Dit bied baie verskillende tempo’s en ek geniet dit wanneer die ander drie inkom – dit lig sommer my hart.” Die Hofmeyr-konsert is ernstiger klassieke fluitmusiek. Dié produksie is geïnspireer deur die vele fasette van die liefde en die nag en volgens Hofmeyr-Burger “iets heeltemal anders” as haar ander optredes. In Cantabile bied sy en William Berger (baritone), Magdalene Minnaar (sopraan), Schalk Joubert (baskitaar) en Van der Merwe (klavier) gehore die geleentheid om na van hul gunsteling-filmmusiek en ligte klassieke musiek te luister. “Hierdie program is ’n voorreg. Ek sien uit om musiek te maak in die oomblik, want dit is wanneer ons saam iets laat leef en elke keer wat ons speel is daar iets nuuts. Al die musikante met wie ek optree is van die beste in die land. Daar is soveel vertroue in mekaar en dit beteken jy kan ontspan en met jou hart en siel speel,” meen Hofmeyr-Burger. Skool-toneelstuk slaan asems weg Die meesleurende drama Die kandidaat het vanjaar die beoordelaars én die gehoor geheel en al betower. Die Hoërskool Stellenbosch het geskiedenis gemaak deur die eerste plek in te neem en as die algehele beste produksie by die gesogte ATKV-Tienertoneelkompetisie bekroon te word. Die tweede plek het aan die Hoërskool Parel Vallei gegaan, met die Hoërskool Noordheuwel van Krugersdorp in die derde plek. Die plaaslike skool se talent het op alle vlakke geskitter, met beide die hoofrol-akteurs wat die hoogste toekennings verower het. Emelyn Snyman, ’n gr.9-leerder, is as beste aktrise in ’n hoofrol aangewys en die beste akteur in ’n hoofrol was Johan Swanepoel (gr.11). Benewens die groot oorwinnings het Die kandidaat ’n indrukwekkende rits benoemings ontvang. Dr. André Gerber en dr. Andrea Staude is as die beste regisseurs aangewys. Die produksie het ook die toekenning vir die beste ensemble gewen. Olivia van der Westhuizen (gr.11) is ook as die beste aktrise in ’n ondersteunende rol aangewys en die akteur Benyamin Amoraal (gr.9) het die toekenning vir die beste kameeverskyning ontvang. In die tegniese afdeling het die skool ook geskitter, met die toekenning vir die beste hantering van tegniese aspekte. Die beoordelaars het veral die produksie se afgeronde tegniese afwerking, die hoë vlak van toneelspel en die naatlose saamspeel van die hele ensemble geprys. Hierdie geskiedkundige prestasie is ’n fantastiese beloning vir die maande se harde werk, laataand-repetisies en onblusbare passie wat die hele span ingesit het. “Baie geluk aan die Hoërskool Stellenbosch se toneelspan, die regisseurs, Emelyn, Johan en elke lid van die span. Julle het die skool en die gemeenskap se naam hoog gehou!” sê dié skool. Om Die kandidaat en die ander tienertoneeldrama’s op die Toyota Stellenbosch Woordfees te sien, besoek Quicket vir kaartjies. Another Rhodes Scholar from PRG Dr Kai Moors, a Paul Roos Gymnasium (PRG) old boy, is the newest recipient of the prestigious Rhodes Scholarship for 2027. He joins the ranks of PRG old boys Jannie Durand, Jean Meiring, Waldimar Pelser, Heerden Herman, Ruan Spies and Willem Wilkens, who were previously awarded the scholarship. He matriculated in 2018 and graduated as top performer from Stellenbosch University (SU) in 2024 with an MB, ChB (cum laude). He is currently completing his internship as a junior doctor at New Somerset Hospital in Cape Town. His academic record is matched by outstanding leadership: he received the SU Rector’s Award for Excellence in Leadership and chaired several societies. He is a published first author in a peer-reviewed journal and has presented his research internationally. His passion for neurology, particularly epilepsy, focuses on collaboration between doctors and traditional healers to destigmatise the condition and improve diagnosis. With the scholarship, he plans to pursue a DPhil in Neuroscience at Oxford and aims to specialise as a neurologist, lecture in academia, and elevate neurological care. Beyond medicine, he enjoys philosophy, chess and sport.

Swing for good at West Coast recce challenge Organisers of the West Coast Recce Footprint Golf Challenge 2026 are calling on businesses and golfers to support the event at Stellenbosch Golf Club. The 18-hole four-ball event takes place on Friday 23 October presented jointly by Fort Good Hope and Fort Viking, two Western Cape regional structures of the South African Special Forces Association (SASFA). Fietsryers van die Prochorus-klub in Jonkers hoek het Vrydag (2 Oktober) se FunFietsFees in by die Stellenbosch-stadsaal geniet. Die groep is Miniali Mfula (13), Elihle Poko (14), Enzokuhle Pudumele (15), Erin Snel (11), Praise Falinya (20), Sinothando Plaatjie (13), Masibulele Nkunkumana (16), Unako Bokwe (12), Amber Lindoor (18), Owam Foursakhe (9) en Asive Wanana (13).

Winde trap saam met S’bosch-jeug Yaël Malgas Jong fietsryers van onder meer Kayamandi, Jonkershoek en Cloetesville het die afgelope Vrydag (2 Oktober) die laaste van hul skoolvakansiedae by die FunFietsFees in Stellenbosch geniet. Onder die fietsryers was Wes-Kaapse premier, Alan Winde, wat saam met sowat 100 plaaslike jong fietsryers voor die plaaslike stadsaal vir ’n oggend se pret ontmoet het. Die dag het begin met ’n “cycling bus” met kinders wat uit hul buurte in groepe na die Mandela-gedenkplein getrap het. Die doel van die geleentheid, wat Vervoermaand (Oktober) ingelui het, was onder meer om jong fietsryers aan die “kultuur” van fietsry bloot te stel. Volgens Dawid Botha van Stellenbosch-fietsry was die dag ’n sukses. “Ons hoop is nie net om meer kinders op fietse

Die geleentheid is deur die Beierse (Duitse) ministerie van sport gereël en ses fietse is aan die Greater Stellenbosch Trust oorhandig. Buiten besprekings oor fietskultuur en veiligheid het die kinders toertjies met hul fietse uitgevoer, hul fietse verfraai met kunsvlyt en verstellings en herstelwerk aan hul fietse gekry. Botha sê hy hoop die FunFietsFees is die eerste van vele en hoop dit sal die Stellenbosch-munisipaliteit aanspoor om die dorp meer fiets-vriendelik te maak.

Fighter rises to gold Yaël Malgas

espite currently holding the title of Pro-Am South African super welterweight champion, Ruan Hanekom’s journey in kickboxing started on a whim. The 25-year old took up boxing in 2021 when he discovered The Power Plant gym at The Woodmill. For the first time Ruan started exercising, which soon became training. “I was first team in school for 2 Dota – computer games and e-sports – and I did debating. I was very scrawny, always tired and had no energy. At university it was very much the same, just sort of drifting through life,” Ruan explains. In spite of not participating in sports, the Stellenbosch student always enjoyed watching combat sports. After finding The Power Plant, he decided to “drop by for one session” and the rest is history, as he hasn’t stopped training. Encouragement by coach Xolisani “Man X” Thembani, founder of the Kay-

amandi Boxing Academy (KBA), Ruan was soon involved in his first boxing fight. “Xolisani invested a lot of energy and time training me, and within six months he said it was time and he was going to put me in a ‘nice match’,” he recalls. “I started looking my opponent up on Instagram; he had perfect form and had been a coach for years!” TRAINING ABROAD Ruan walked away from the fight with a broken nose and a bruised ego. After the bout, he also started training in Muaythai. After a visit to Thailand, where he trained at a local gym, he shifted gears in the sport. “It was a tough but nurturing environment. The opportunity to train with the best of the best was wonderful.” On his return home in 2024, Ruan participated in the regional and provincial boxing championships, ultimately recording an eight-fight winning streak. At the national boxing championship in KwaZulu-Natal, he lost in the quarterfinal.

On a break from boxing, Ruan was invited to try kickboxing at the Titans Fitness and Martial Arts Academy in Paarl. He soon started competing, making it all the way to the kickboxing nationals this year, where he won the 71 kg and 75 kg fighting categories. “In life you have to find something that inspires you, even if you aren’t necessarily predisposed to that something. I was never athletic, yet I ended up doing something the polar opposite of playing video games and it changed my life. “This sport has changed my confidence, self-confidence, humility and discipline. It taught me many virtues and the community I found is a very nurturing environment.” Along with the titles Ruan was also crowned the Muaythai Pro-Am SA Super welterweight champion after defeating Richard Spagnolo in Lansdowne on Saturday 26 September – a career highlight. “Winning a fight is about so much more than physicality. factor is being more prepared than your opponent. It is all about creating a positive feedback loop because that is what I can control.” During the fight Ruan suffered a fractured eye socket and has since undergone surgery, but he continues to coach others. “My family have always been supportive and proud of my fighting career but they worry so this break is a relief for them,” Ruan quips.
