Besorgde inwoners se bevinding

Vertroue in polisie kwyn

Daarom was brig.

The annual Garden Town Stellenbosch parade of colour and flowers blossomed in the town on Tuesday (29 October). Stellenbosch locals like the actor Denver Vraagom (pictured) and visitors to the town, took to the streets for the annual parade. Garden tours, screenings of flowerrelated films and an extravaganza of flowers in the Stellenbosch Town Hall are just some of the Garden Town Stellenbosch highlights this year.

Alleged CIT robber arrested six months after the crime

Several months after suspects tried to rob a Fidelity Cash Solutions vehicle in Stellenbosch, a suspect has been nabbed in connection with the crime.

A multi-disciplinary team comprising the Hawks, Crime Intelligence, Stellenbosch Visible Policing members and Stellenbosch detectives arrested Mandla Jack (42) on charges of robbery with aggravating circumstances (cashin-transit robbery) when they executed a warrant on Sunday (27 October).

On Tuesday 4 April Fidelity Cash Solutions members were collecting cash at the Total service station in Stellenbosch. The crewman went inside the store to collect the cash. While exiting, he was approached by unknown men, one of whom pointed a gun at him, from behind.

The suspects took the crewman’s service pistol and 10 rounds of ammunition. He was further ordered to handover the cash safe. At that stage the contents of the Cross Pavement Carrier box was already deposited into the drop safe of the armoured vehicle, so the box was empty.

The suspects then fled the crime scene in a white Volkswagen Polo, which was apparently fitted with false

number plates.

Investigation by the Hawks’ national priority violent crime team led to Jack being positively linked to the crime and his subsequent arrest.

He appeared in the Stellenbosch Magistrates’ Court on Monday 28 October) and the matter was postponed to Thursday 7 November for further bail-related information.

The accused is remanded in custody.

‘Skytram’ opponent speaks in Colombia

Talks about the proposed Franschhoek cable car or “skytram” have been making the rounds once again, this time after an opponent of the project travelled to Colombia to make his voice globally.

Nick Reyneke, head of communications at the Baviaans Growth Initiative (BGI), is currently attending the United Nations Biodiversity Conference (COP 16) in Cali, Colombia. Reyneke, who represents BGI, aims to address the importance of conserving South Africa’s biodiversity.

“Unsustainable proposed projects such as the Franschhoek Skytram, which will damage the fragile Cape Winelands Biosphere, remind us of the urgent need for policy changes and stronger support for nature-based solutions.

“These projects take from nature without giving back, risking the destruction of ecosystems that are part of the Cape Floral Kingdom – a unique and irreplaceable biodiversity hotspot,” Reyneke wrote on his LinkedIn profile as an introduction to the key points he would discuss during the COP summit.

On the “Stop the

Franschhoek Skytram”

Facebook group, Reyneke also posted that the skytram project “threatens to turn Franschhoek into a Disneyland detached from its agricultural and multicultural heritage”.

Reyneke could not be reached telephonically.

The skytram is proposed to start at Haute Cabrière and follow a 1 km cable line up the valley to the Mount Rochelle Nature Reserve.

The lower station at Haute Cabrière will include the existing offerings as well as new proposed walkways around a dam, a new deli, ablutions and parking, while the upper station at Mont Rochelle Nature Reserve will include wine tasting, a restaurant, souvenir shop, paragliding launching area, walkways and existing hiking routes.

Other concerns regarding the proposed skytram project that have been reiterated by opposers over the course of the public participation process since February, include mass tourism and the capacity of Franschhoek’s power grid to carry the cable car, the increased risk of fires and the lack of socio-economic benefits for locals.

According to a Netwerk24, Stellenbosch municipal

spokesperson Stuart Grobbelaar confirmed the municipality has “given permission to the developers to submit an application to get environmental approval from the [national] Department of Forestry, Fisheries and Environment (DFFE)”.

According to Grobbelaar, the permission is necessary as part of the proposed project is located on municipal land.

“It is important to clarify that the municipality’s consent at this stage does not mean the council’s approval of the proposed project,” Grobbelaar told Netwerk24

“This consent is a procedural requirement in accordance with legislative mandates, allowing the environmental assessment process to proceed.

“The municipality will not consider any further development applications until the environmental impact study has been formally accepted by the department.”

The article further elaborated that Doug Jeffery Environment Consultants had confirmed that the project is still in the preapplication process.

“Consultation with the community is still ongoing with no formal application submitted to the DFFE,” the article stated.

Merecia Smith, owner of Wine Analytical Services (WASLab) at Spier Wine Farm, won the award for excellence in entrepreneurship in Category 3 at the recent Good Hope FM Warrior Women Awards. The award celebrates a woman who has shown outstanding entrepreneurial spirit, innovation, and business acumen, making a significant impact in this industry.

Smith started her journey as a general worker at the historic farm in 1998, working her way through the ranks as laboratory assistant, supervisor and eventually lab manager in 2018. In 2019, she became the first person of colour to start a wine lab in South Africa. WASLab is currently ranked third best in the country, as per last year’s South African Wine Laboratories Association competition.

Sprucing in full force

Stellenbosch Municipality is gearing-up for a busy grasscutting season.

This runs throughout the year, with new schedules drawn up every two months, depending on factors such as weather, the growth of grass and complaints received from residents.

“With the fast growth of grass, our teams are diligently working across all public areas, parks and sidewalks, adhering to a schedule that rotates every six weeks during the warmer months,” said municipal spokesperson Stuart Grobbelaar.

“Residents can be assured that every area will be visited and maintained. However, it’s important to note that some routes fall under the jurisdiction of the Cape Winelands District Municipality,

which is responsible for maintaining grass along provincial routes.

“Their teams are also actively working throughout the broader district.

“Please be aware that this schedule does not include grass cutting and maintenance for public cemeteries, riverbank areas or the vibrant traffic circles on Bird Street, Merriman Street and the traffic islands along the R44, as these areas are maintained on a separate schedule,” Grobbelaar added.

The grass-cutting schedule of Stellenbosch Municipality for the month of November can be found online at www.stellenbosch.gov.za. The December schedule will be shared in due course.

KWDM-sessies vra insette

Innovating for common good

Three locals looking to change the world for good, in line with their ideas, have made it to the finals of the 2024 Ideas for Change Challenge.

Stellenbosch Network, in partnership with Ranyaka, SCAN, Stellenbosch University (SU) LaunchLab, and the SU Department of Science & Innovation’s Regional Innovation Support Programme (RISP), launched the challenge, which focuses on tackling pressing social issues affecting the Stellenbosch community.

The three finalists of the annual challenge are Tumelo Mokoena, Chiedza Vushe and Lyke van Wyk.

. SafeGuard Stellies by Tumelo Mokoena

As a SU engineering student, Mokoena is passionate about using his skills to tackle crime. Motivated by personal experience, he aims to engage the engineering faculty in developing drones as part of a community safety effort.

The whole system works by pressing the bracelet or app button, which sends an alert with GPS location to campus security and local authorities.

tactics, and exposes known fraudsters.

Users can report scams, share experiences and access a database of known scammers, including recycled photos and impersonated profiles. Artificial Intelligence (AI) would be used to analyse scam patterns and provide real-time assessments to help users avoid fraud.

Initially focused on accommodation scams, the platform could expand to cover other online crimes like stolen goods in buy-and-sell groups. Users could report stolen items, helping create a safer marketplace.

. Minibus Mat(i)e: Stellenbosch Public Transport, Done Easy! by Luke van Wyk

Accessing minibus taxis in Stellenbosch has been difficult as a result of their informal nature, lack of branding and limited route information. This led to an increase in private cars.

The app prompts users to provide details of the incident, though this is optional. SafeGuard Stellies aims to deploy drones equipped with cameras, providing real-time video feeds to assess the situation.

The drones track perpetrators and record evidence, aiding in criminal apprehension. According to Mokoena SafeGuard Stellies aims to improve safety and reduce crime by enabling swift, technology-enhanced responses to emergencies.

. ScamAlert by Chiedza Vushe

While searching for accommodation Vushe encountered multiple scammers on online platforms, nearly losing thousands in deposit money.

This highlighted the widespread issue of online fraud.

Her idea is to develop a platform that helps identify scammers, educates the public about scamming

Van Wyk, an SU alumnus with a background in civil engineering, proposes route branding and a mobile app for route and fare information will improve minibus taxi accessibility without altering core operations. By using route numbers, static maps and new technologies, it aims to enhance useability.

Minibus taxis will be assigned route numbers displayed via inexpensive magnetic stickers, making it easier for commuters to identify the correct taxi.

Advanced features such as smartfare collection and real-time tracking will be introduced, encouraging a shift from private cars to minibus taxis. The app will also integrate with other transport modes, such as buses and trains, providing commuters with accurate, real-time information. ) Vote for the top idea by visiting the Stellenbosch Network website.

Klinieke wysig diens

kliniek in Pniël.

Wow bemagtig vroue

Vroue en hul waarde is vandeesmaand by die Wow (Women of Worth)liefdadigheidsgeselligheid gevier.

Don’t delay with a stroke!

“Age is just a number. Your health is what matters.”

This is the wisdom the 27year-old Collin Brunsdon of the Stellenbosch area shared as World Stroke Day was commemorated on Tuesday (29 October).

The first time he learnt about a stroke was when he experienced it in June.

“My fiancé and I were talking. She said I started mumbling. When I got up I felt something was not right and I fell,” Brunsdon recalled.

“I knew nothing about strokes. This was a very steep learning curve! Things changed so quickly. I went from being very independent to having to ask everyone to help me do things. It has been very hard.”

Stroke is a leading cause of disability and death worldwide and, according to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of South Africa, 10 people are affected by a stroke each hour. It occurs when the flow of blood to the brain is blocked or reduced. There could also be bleeding in the brain.

The provincial Department of Health and Wellness urged residents to get medical help quickly when they recognise the warning signs, and to work with health-care workers on the journey to recovery.

WARNING SIGNS

Remember this acronym to help you recognise the sudden

signs of a stroke: Be Fast.

B: suddenly having difficulty to balance;

E: if your eyes struggle to focus or you have double vision;

F: face drooping on one side;

A: arm weakness (weakness usually in the arm and leg on one side of your body);

S: difficulty speaking; and

T: timeous action – go to a hospital immediately or call the ambulance service on 10177.

The sooner you get to a hospital, the better your chances of recovery. When a stroke patient has been

stabilised the journey to regain function and independence begins.

“Because a stroke happens in your brain you can experience the impact of the stroke in multiple parts of your body,” said Demi Alexander, an occupational therapist at Stellenbosch Hospital’s rehabilitation centre.

“This means you will need intervention by a range of experts.”

WHAT TO EXPECT DURING RECOVERY

Each person’s situation and needs are unique.

PROACTIVE STEPS TO REDUCE RISK OF STROKE

When it comes to your risk of having a stroke some factors are beyond your control. If you have a family history of stroke or if you had a stroke, you are at greater risk of having a stroke. Your risk of having a stroke is also greater if you are overweight, smoke or drink excessive amounts of alcohol. Here are three tips to reduce your risk of having a stroke: . Find efficient ways to manage stress. Stress can cause us to overeat or to have difficulty sleeping. By managing your stress better, you will be less prone to other habits that can increase your risk of having a stroke. Examples of how you can manage your stress more efficiently is learning to say no when you feel overwhelmed, or to ask for help.

. Add exercise to your daily routine. Exercise gives you a positive way to ease stress and it will help you to maintain a healthy body weight.

. Commit to making better choices. Get the support you need to quit smoking. Keep your intake of alcohol to a minimum.

There’s a new Swift on the way

Wallace du Plessis

Suzuki’s B-segment hatch, the Swift, which is also effectively its most important model, has just been redeveloped to stay ahead of the pack nipping at its heels.

It was made public at the Festival of Motoring at Kyalami in August, revealing a fresh design, new engine and all-new CVT option.

There are five models in the new Suzuki Swift range. They range from the entry-level Swift 1.2 GL with manual transmission, to the range topping 1.2 GLX CVT. Pricing has been kept tight, giving good value for money.

In some ways the Swift is the flagship of the range in South Africa, where more than 85 000 have been sold since the original local launch in 2008.

This fourth generation model in SA gets the Z12E naturally aspirated three-cylinder engine that delivers 60 kW and 112 Nm through a five-speed box.

Suzuki claim a fuel consumption of 4,4 F/100 km, but expect to get just below 5 F/100 km.

The new Swift is 20 mm longer with a 265-litre boot, which now features a more versatile 60:40 rear bench split, and access is lower than before.

The interior appears to be slightly more premium than the outgoing model and specification is a step up from the previous models.

The new Suzuki Swift is a bit longer than its predecessor and features a more versatile 60:40 rear bench split.

The whole range now has power steering, digital climate control, a digital information display in the instrument cluster, three-point seatbelts for all five occupants, rear LED tail lamps with a high-mounted LED stop lamp, an immobiliser and alarm, rear parking sensors as well as electrically adjustable and foldable side mirrors.

Standard across the entire range is electric windows on all

four doors, a height adjustable driver’s seat and a rear bench that can fold in a 60/40 configuration.

From a safety point of view all models in the new Suzuki Swift line-up have six airbags as standard, as well as Electronic Stability Programme (ESP), hill hold control and emergency brake assist. Add to this ISOFIX tethering points at the rear and you have one of the safest and

best-equipped vehicles in the Bclass hatch category.

Prices are as follows:

. 1.2 GL Manual: R219 900; . 1.2 GL+ Manual: R239 900; . 1.2 GL+ CVT: R259 900; . 1.2 GLX Manual: R264 900; and . 1.2 GLX CVT: R284 900.

Car magazine got to test a pre-production unit and had this to say: “Suzuki hasn’t strayed far from the formula that made the previous Swift such a success,

rather smoothing out some of the less resolved areas, working on refinement, and adding some welcome features to already good levels of standard specification. Factor in competitive pricing, and it looks as though they might well have another winner on their hands.”

We will be testing the new Swift early November and give readers a full review with driving impressions then.

Ek was ’n bietjie senuweeagtig,” sê Mia.

Bekker Strydom, ’n gr. 9-leerder, het vanjaar as rasieleier begin.

MTB routes revealed

Stillwater Sports, organisers of the Savanna Origin of Trails MTB Experience, have announced a series of exciting route enhancements aimed at showcasing the very best of Stellenbosch.

The two-day mountainbiking event will be held in and around the town on Saturday 16 and Sunday 17 November, with Coetzenburg Field acting as the race village.

Riders have the option of choosing between the marathon and half-marathon distances. “The marathon is designed for fitter, more experienced riders who feel confident on technical terrain,” says Michael Meyer, managing director of Stillwater Sports and event founder.

“The route showcases some of Stellenbosch’s best trails. The punchy climbs and rocky single tracks are characteristic of the area.

Fitness will definitely enhance the overall experience.”

Day 1 of the marathon covers 48 km with a total ascent of 1 400 m. Described as a “lucky packet” of mountain biking, it offers a variety of short, punchy climbs, smooth single-track, long climbs and technical terrain. Highlights include the ever-popular trails of Mont Marie, Dornier, Ernie Els and Stellenzicht.

Day 2 of the marathon spans 54 km with 900 m of climbing. It’s flatter and faster than day 1. For the first time the underrated Somerbosch Trails will be featured, with the Faure Drop promising an adrenaline rush.

For those looking for a less intense experience, the halfmarathon is perfect for novice stage racers or riders who want to enjoy the event’s atmosphere while experiencing magnificent trails.

Day 1 of the half-marathon features a 26 km route with a total ascent of 650 m, offering a balanced stage with a mix of jeep-track and single-track. Highlights include the floating bridge at Mont Marie and the iconic G-Spot trail. This stage caters for riders of all levels, incorporating some technical riding without the more challenging sections of the full marathon.

Day 2 of the half-marathon covers 36 km with a 600 m ascent. It’s flatter and smoother than day 1, featuring fun single-track and climbs toward the end, and offering riders their first chance to tackle the Somerbosch Trails. ) For more information or to enter, send an email to entries@stillwatersports.com or visit https:// bit.ly/2024SavannaOOTOnlineEn tries.

Success for S’bosch NGO

Avril Fillies

Being crowned as the 2024 champions of the Stellenbosch LFA First Division showed the strong character of the training4changeS’ first team.

This inspiring group of high school boys overcame numerous challenges to win their first title in men’s football and, in doing so, they outscored their opponents by more than 40 goals with their exciting style of play.

“The NGO has been working in Stellenbosch since 2013 to provide more than 1 800 children with coaching, academic support and mentorship,” said co-founder Daniel Thomae.

“We always look for the lesson and we are immensely proud of these boys and the way they responded to adversity throughout this season. Winning their first title reflects training4changeS’ commitment to helping young changemakers reach their full

Sweet triumph after putting in the hard yards

potential through sport.”

The boys, all 18 years and younger, are inspiring young leaders and fantastic soccer players. The coaches do an incredible job with the children, and being victorious this season is just an example of how a diverse group of people work together and, how the boys continually defy the odds to rise above their difficult surroundings.

“This title is a good sign that we are going in a positive

direction,” said first team coach Siyabulela “Steve” Qangule. “I am so blessed to be part of these boys’ lives, and its a good feeling to see them smiling. It’s encouraging to be the champions.”

Team co-captain Earl Jacobs thanked Coach Steve for pushing them through the year. Although still in school they sacrificed a lot of their time to be on the training field and not neglecting their schoolwork. He also thanked his teammates for

giving everything and said it is indeed a privilege to be league champions.

The First Division triumph comes after training4changeS’ under-13 boys were also crowned Stellenbosch LFA champions, and the under-11 boys missed out on the age group title following a gutwrenching penalty shoot-out loss in the final.

“A credit to the whole training4changeS organisation,” said under-13 coach Lorenzo

Claassen.

“None of this would be possible without us working together. It is a very sweet moment for the boys. They can be proud of their hard work during the year. We want to build on of this and create similar success stories for girls through soccer as well.” training4changeS is an internationally acclaimed NGO based in Stellenbosch that provides a unique blend of high-level soccer coaching, quality education, and mentorship to empower young changemakers. It is was the first African NGO to earn accreditation in education outside the classroom, and has twice been ranked the top African NGO using sport for peace and social justice. The organisation runs a boys’ soccer academy and school teams for girls. ) Visit www.training4changes.org or the NGO’s social media channels to find out more.

Earl Jacobs, co-captain of the training4changeS senior team, lifts the trophy and celebrates with his teammates as they are crowned Stellenbosch LFA First Division champions.
