“Watermonsters is geneem en by ’n plaaslike SANS 241geakkrediteerde laboratorium laat ontleed.
Cloetesville police, whose service area includes Idas Valley and Welgevonden, have shared safety tips with locals as the festive season is on the doorstep.
The local police station has a festive season awareness campaign underway and asks community members to get involved.
“For community policing to be successful it is important for members of the community to realise and accept they also have a social and moral obligation to assist and support the police in the fight against crime and other forms of social disorder,” said Cloetesville police station commander Lieutenant-Colonel Monique Fortuin.

Make sure security gates have sturdy locks.
Acquire an affordable alarm system to warn occupants of any intrusions in the house.
Security lights on the outside can improve the physical protection of a
house, farm or smallholding.
When you leave your residence, especially over the festive season, inform your neighbours or family of your intended destination.
Do not be visible from the bedroom from the outside when asleep.

“Yes, I am the homeowner.”
These were the proud words of 35 Snake Valley residents who received the title deeds to their homes in Khayamandi they were living in for more than two decades last Thursday (21 November).
The beneficiaries gathered at AmaZink Live in the local township, where municipal officials officially handed over the deeds to the various homeowners.
The Snake Valley maisonettes were handed to local residents in November 2003. Despite the completion of the housing project it was never registered at the deed office, which meant the deeds could not be handed over.
Since then the Free Market Foundation (FMF), sponsored by the Rupert Foundation, has worked to get the 20-year-old housing project registered and, by extension, ensure residents received their deeds through the Khaya Lam project.
Two fieldworkers were appointed to help people with disabilities complete the relevant paperwork at home. Along with the process of obtaining the deeds, the foundation also offered consumereducation sessions to help locals understand what homeownership entails and the responsibilities that go with it.
Through this education residents were also informed of what functions are the responsibility of Stellenbosch Municipality and which their own.
“Now you have these deeds, guard them well,” Temba Nolutshungu, director of the FMF, told the homeowners.
“Take care not to get yourself
swindled out of your homes. You get these people who see you may be struggling and who say they will give you a R5 000 loan to help, but they want your deeds as collateral for the money. Do not do it!”
Nolutshungu quoted late former President Nelson Mandela, who said: “A man is not a man until he has a house of his own.”
He told residents that with their deeds they now have an economic asset that no-one can take away from them.
“Today you are no longer the have not’s. Take care of these homes because the municipality will not be giving you another.”
For Elda Nobelungu (68) and her six
children it was a happy day. She said with the help of her adult children, they take care of the home and are happy there.
Fezeka Nkitini (45) said she has waited years for Thursday’s event. “This really means a lot,” she told Eikestadnuus. “It is a good day, and I’m happy I am now the owner of the house. I live with my two children, 16 and 24 years old, and we are all glad,”
More work lies ahead for FMF with the second batch of Snake Valley residents, who will soon receive their title deeds. An intern town planner will also soon join the municipality and focus on projects in Khayamandi, Cloetesville and Klapmuts.

Ingewikkelde probleme vereis vernuwende oplossings.
Hier is volhoubaarheid weer ter sprake.

Gershwin is by noodgevalle ondersoek en ontslaan.
Kyk nou net hoe werk die Here. . .

Phase 2 of repairs to flood damage on the Franschhoek Pass (R45), following the destructive storms of September 2023, is set to only commence in March next year.
This means motorists will have to continue to drive with caution on the pass, especially during the festive season, as several areas remain volatile following slope damage and slip failures along parts of the road.
The damage was caused by heavy downpours over Heritage weekend last year. Repairs to the scenic roadway was undertaken by the provincial infrastructure department.
As a safety precaution several temporary stop-and-go systems have been erected, as some lanes remain inaccessible to traffic on the pass.
Departmental spokesperson Jandré Bakker reminded motorists that a 5-ton weight restriction is currently in place on the road. “It is advised that larger heavy motor vehicles use alternative routes,” he said.
Explaining the two-phase reparation process of flood damage, Bakker said the first phase comprised emergency repairs.
“These are interim measures to ensure access is restored and critical work is done to stabilise the site to avoid permanent failure,” he elaborated.
“This initial portion of the work is complete, and vehicular access has been restored in a safe and controlled
manner. The permanent-works design for the damage is now complete and the department is currently in the process of finalising the documentation.”
Bakker said the second phase will form part of the current upgrading of Main Road 191 (0,0 km to 9,57 km) and the periodic maintenance of Main Road 191 (9,57 km to 41,95 km) project.
“Once all the relevant processes are completed and approved it is intended that the permanent flood-damage repairs in the Franschhoek Pass will commence [on the eve of] the first quarter of the new financial year... in March 2025,” he added.
The department is currently refurbishing several parts of the R45, from Old Paarl Road all the way to the Theewaterskloof Dam near Villiersdorp.
Bakker said these roadworks are well

underway, and while there are milestones for completion on specific sections, the overall project is scheduled to be completed in the fourth quarter of 2026.
“While we understand the frustration roadworks have on commuters, the long-term benefit outweighs the shortterm inconvenience and sacrifice,” he said.
“Road users should also remember the greater road network suffered significant damage, and we have to balance resources with need throughout the province, which forces us to [conduct] repairs in phases and programme accordingly.”
Meanwhile, in her Medium Term Budget Policy Speech for the 2024-’25 financial term, delivered on Tuesday (26 November), provincial finance minister Deidré Baartman said the provincial governments’ application for disaster and infrastructure funding from National Treasury has been approved.
She said the province would receive R1,2 billion, flowing through various provincial conditional grants, including R947 million for disaster-related infrastructure reconstruction and rehabilitation of infrastructure damage between December 2023 and July 2024.
“The extent of the damage caused by these floods and the high likelihood of more extreme weather events occurring is further reason why we need to budget better for disasters,” she said.
Several parts of the Franschhoek Pass suffered flood damage during the devastating storms last year.

Stellenbosch-based NGO Bergzicht Training and Development honoured its working alumni at its sixth annual Celebration Day on Wednesday 13 November.
The prizes awarded to alumni totalled in excess of R65 000, celebrating the achievements of graduates who have successfully gained and remained in employment.
Ward 23 councillor Lwando Nkamisa delivered an inspiring keynote address. As one of the youngest members of the Mayoral Committee of Stellenbosch Municipality, he said: “Success is not a destination, but a journey of continuous growth, resilience, and unwavering belief in your own potential.” He emphasised the need for collaboration among local stakeholders to foster job creation and entrepreneurship, and congratulated the alumni for securing jobs.
The Top Achiever Award was presented to Vuyiseka Xatasi, 2023 Food Service Assistant alumnus, currently employed as a commis chef at Lanzerac Hotel. She received a prize valued at R10 000.
“This is how Bergzicht thanks one for one’s hard work and makes one feel appreciated. It makes me very proud of myself,
after having gone through a personal ordeal through which I persevered. The recognition showed me that I am a strong woman, and that God is always with me,” Xatasi said.
“Bergzicht motivates one always to do one’s best, and this win of mine should motivate others to always give their best in everything they undertake in life.”

Aanvanklik sou die blikkie of pakkie as hekgeld dien, maar omdat New Orleans-park gebruik gaan word, sal ’n toegangsfooi by die hek betaal moet word. ) Vir meer besonderhede kan Warwick May by 072 556 1075 of Athol Ontong by 083 358 1784 gebel word.

Hierdie dokumentêre reeks is in 2020 bekend gestel.

It has good concentration and pronounced fruit characteristics. There is a lot of hard work, passion and attention the detail going into creating any wine, but cabernet sauvignon is king, and in Stellenbosch, region and cultivar are a match made in heaven!”

Maynier added it is understandable that the matrics want to celebrate the end of their schooling, but he urged them to do so responsibly and safely.
“We urge all matrics attending these and other smaller events, firstly, to familiarise themselves with the safety measures at the event itself and the relevant local emergency phone numbers.
“Also, they must keep a close eye on their valuables at all times and, similarly, keep a close eye on their beverages at all times, and not leave them unattended.
“Report anything suspicious to the South African Police Service or event organisers immediately, avoid drinking and driving, and set up a buddy system for their own safety as
well as keep in regular contact with their parents.”
Parents are encouraged to ensure their children understand the risks involved in any event or party, and to ensure they have made arrangements to stay in contact with their children and know what to do in an emergency. The national matric results announcement has been moved to Monday 13 January 2025, to accommodate the first day of school.
Individual candidate results will be released at schools and on the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) website from 10:00 on Tuesday 14 January 2025.
“We look forward to celebrating with all our matrics when the results are released next year!” Maynier said.

A Stellenbosch education institute has celebrated a potential breakthrough in addressing the country’s literacy and numeracy crisis, with children from a local township achieving exceptional literacy scores, significantly outperforming the national average.
In a recent survey conducted in Khayamandi, where the Community-Rooted Education (CoRE) training programme was launched by the Indaba Institute a few years ago, children aged 4 and 5 (taught by CoRE-trained teachers) recorded 94% scored for Emergent Literacy and Language, against an average of 71% in the Western Cape and 54,7% nationally. A 20 to 40% positive deviation is statistically very significant, given the Khayamandi sampling is from quintile 1 and 2 learners.
In Emergent Numeracy and Mathematics, the children who have benefited from Indabatrained teachers scored 57%, compared to 47% in the Western Cape and 33,9% nationally.
The 2021 Thrive by Five Index, released in April 2022, is the largest survey of preschool child development ever undertaken in SA. The index highlighted, among other metrics, that a staggering 57% of children enrolled in ELPs in SA fail to thrive by age 5. But the results of the Indaba
Institute, in Stellenbosch, has now recorded a rare glimmer of hope.
André Shearer, Indaba founder and chairperson, said the institute delivers CoRE, which trains teachers in the heart of their own communities. Instead of a “topdown” lecturing approach, the CoRE programme trains and empowers teachers to dramatically improve the education they offer to young children in their care at ECD centres. He said: “These promising and impressive outcomes reflect the positive impact of CoRE, as teachers have clearly been empowered to enhance their children’s abilities in the two key metrics driving the devastating academic outcomes in SA’s education system – numeracy and literacy.”
The survey was conducted by Data Drive 2030, which used the Early Learning Outcome Measures (ELOMs) 4-5 assessment tool, and compared against benchmarks taken from the Thrive by Five 2021 Index.
The index found that 50% of children face barriers to thriving that limit their chances of realising their full potential, reported Innovation Edge. Only 43% of these will start their formal education with the right foundations in place.
By comparison, Indaba describes its ability to enhance children’s life chances by training teachers in innovative
teaching methods and to harness local language, culture, resources and creativity.
In this manner, teachers mobilise their own communities to cherish and rally behind quality ECD education collectively, even for poverty-stricken children.
In July Siviwe Gwarube, basic education minister, said the department’s most crucial priorities are to intensify efforts to improve access to and quality of early-childhood development and improve literacy and numeracy skills across all schooling phases.
“Indaba has demonstrated how this can be achieved with the CoRE programme,’’ added Shearer. “The implications of the results we’ve managed to achieve in the ELOMs are nothing short of a revelation.
“Since we started the Indaba Institute we’ve realised we have to find a way that contributes to the dramatic transformation of society. If you look at the literacy and numeracy crisis in SA, it is unprecedented and unbelievably complicated, and it threatens the future of the well-being of SA, unless we get it right.
“The ELOMs, related to the CoRE programme in Khayamandi, in one of the hardest-hit townships in the country, found within the context of some of the greatest Gini Coefficients in the world, have yielded a literacy and numeracy outcome significantly
higher than the benchmarks.”
The recent assessment produced key findings that will inform their strategy and action plans to highlight areas needing further intervention and improvement, particularly in fine and gross motor skills.
Indaba believes this is a systemic issue in the vulnerable, poverty-stricken communities it serves, where many ECD centres lack safe outdoor play and recreation spaces. Understanding these challenges immediately enables the CoRE facilitator to focus on equipping practitioners with the tools and strategies to better support children’s development in these areas.
The ELOM is a set of population-based child assessment tools designed to
determine whether children are developmentally on track for their age. The tools also establish whether an ECD programme is effective in preparing children for entry into school, and identify areas for programmatic improvement.
The CoRE programme has proven that, with the right approach, even in the most impoverished communities, we can achieve remarkable improvements in literacy and numeracy.
“At Indaba, we remain committed to this vision of a transformed education system, where every child, regardless of their background, has access to the quality education they deserve. These results show that change is not only possible, it is already happening.”

Curro Holdings partnered with Tennis South Africa (TSA) to bring world-class tennis right here to Stellenbosch with two International Tennis Federation (ITF) men’s and women’s tournaments. The tournament, held at the Van der Stel courts, will take place from Sunday 1 to Sunday 15 December. Eikestadnuus spoke to Cindy van der Merwe, portfolio manager at Curro Sport, about the event and the international and local players to watch.
What will the tournaments entail? The tournament includes a men’s (M15) ($15 000) and women’s (W15) event with the first tournament running from 1 to 7 December and the second from 8 to 15 December. Each category boasts prize money of $15 000 per week, an overall pool of $60 000. The series was launched in Hillcrest, Johannesburg, in June. Why did Curro decide to continue the tournament in Stellenbosch?
The success of the first leg of the Curro Centre Court Series underscores the importance of local support and investment in tennis. It demonstrates that with the right opportunities and platforms, South African players can shine on the international stage, inspiring future generations to take up the sport. We look forward to the success of the two Stellenbosch tournaments. What opportunities do hosting such tournaments bring for South Africa’s professional players and rising stars? As the tournaments form part of the men’s and women’s ITF tour, the series allows some of
the world’s best up-and-coming players to improve their rankings by earning points for their performances. These points are crucial for their professional careers and are typically gained at a much higher cost in international tournaments. The series also significantly reduces the financial burden on local players, allowing them to compete at a high level without the expense of international travel. These events offer an opportunity for rising local tennis stars to face off against international professional players with attractive prize pots on offer.
How has the series impacted local players? South African players who competed in the Curro Centre Court Series earlier this year have earned valuable ranking points on the world’s biggest professional tours – ATP Men’s World Tour and WTA Women’s World Tour. The three weeks in Hillcrest proved pivotal for South Africans who represented 39,7% of the draw (201 out of 508 players were South African) and a further 46,3% of the South Africans were under 20 years old. This is a stark
contrast to the handful of players who have the means to travel outside of the country to get the same exposure. A total of 387 ATP and WTA points were won by South Africans in the three-week Hillcrest series, which amounts to 55,7% of all points won by South Africans in the entire previous calendar year (695). Are there any Stellenbosch locals expected to be in action at the tournament? Marc van der Merwe and Carl Roothman, both from Paul Roos Gymnasium will be taking part. Other locals include Grey College alumni Phillip Henning, Curro Durbanville alumni Kris van Wyk and Isabella Kruger and Zoe Kruger, both Curro Hazeldean alumni. Current Hoërskool Stellenbosch player HanMarie McAslin will be on the court as well as Leo Matthysen and Willem de Waal (PRG) will be in action. How does the tournament help showcase tennis and help the development of the sport? By hosting and investing in these tournaments, Curro aims to inspire and nurture the next generation of SA tennis champions. The series brings the best players to our country and gives our young up-and-coming stars the tangible opportunity to see them in action and compete to test their abilities. Generally, South African players must travel to other countries to play in tournaments of this calibre. Having these tournaments in SA not only offers valuable exposure and experience but also helps elevate the status of tennis in our country. Curro’s commitment is to create a thriving tennis culture that encourages young athletes to pursue their dreams and reach their full potential, ensuring
Professional players expected to compete include Leo Borg, son of Swedish five-time Wimbledon winner, Bjorn Borg, South African Davis Cup team players Alec Beckley, Leo Matthysen and Phillip Henning, Fed
