Papegaaiberg-plankom

Three behind bars

Stellenbosch police arrested three suspects in connection with housebreaking, theft and possession of an unlicensed firearm after they were found in possession of certain items that were missing from premises in Tayee Street, Jamestown. The premises had been broken into at 05:00 on Sunday 15 June

The complainant had left his home with everything in order, but he received a call from his brother informing him his house had been set alight. On returning, his neighbour handed some belongings to him that he had salvaged

Certain items were also found to have been stolen, including a hunting rifle A tip-off led Stellenbosch detectives and Sector 2 manager to premises in Mountain View, Jamestown, where a search was conducted and police officers found a safe, an air rifle and a hunting rifle, all postively identified by the complainant as his.

Certified hairdressers ready for jobs

An annual skills-development programme aimed at unemployed women and youth afforded participants an opportunity to undergo hairdressing training.

This year’s training programme, offered by the Cape Winelands District Municipality (CWDM) and supported by the provincial Department of Social Development, ran from Monday 2 to Monday 23 June, accommodating 14 participants from Stellenbosch. It concluded with a certificate ceremony celebrating successful completion and recognising hard work and dedication.

The programme aimed to equip participants with practical skills that open doors to independence, empowerment and economic resilience.

Councillor Minnie Petersen, CWDM portfolio holder for Rural and Social Development, shared the following sentiment: “Because it’s Youth Month

we want to empower our young people and help them become self-sufficient and independent to thrive and contribute to society We also wish to provide women with the necessary skills to take care of their own financial needs.”

The training course comprised both practical and theoretical components, which included basic hair therapy, personal health and hygiene, occupational health and safety in the workplace, client consultation and salon administration.

Along with the practical and theoretical components, participants received a start-up toolkit comprising a professional 200-watt salon hairdryer, a brush set, professional ceramic straightener (flat iron), one set of small, medium and large rollers, combs, scissors, a black towel and protective clothing or uniform.

Festive welcome for Kganyago

It was a day of celebration and pride for supporters of Lesetja Kganyago, governor of the South African Reserve Bank, when he was officially installed as chancellor of Stellenbosch University last Friday (20 June).

Accepting the 16th university chancellorship this past January, his official robing by Dr Nicky Newton-King, chairperson of the SU Council, assisted by SU registrar Dr Ronel Retief, took place at the SU Konservatorium’s Endler Hall to resounding applause and joyous song from family, friends and colleagues.

“I accept this role with a deep sense of responsibility, aware of the complex legacy that I inherit and the expectations that lie ahead,” Kganyago said in his inaugural address to the assembly

He noted how, during his own student days, he played his own part among thousands of students across the country who took an active stand against the apartheid government’s efforts to limit university autonomy.

The new chancellor urged that despite

the challenges currently faced by higher education, which may well be different, the integrity of higher education should be safeguarded.

“We must safeguard this freedom and honour it with curiosity, engagement and critical enquiry,” he stressed

For his part SU rector and vice-chancellor Prof Deresh Ramjugernath praised Kganyago as a leader of “exceptional courage, wisdom and steadiness”.

He said Kganyago’s proven attributes make him very well-suited to his role at the university “Chancellor, we are deeply honoured that you have accepted this role,” Ramjugernath said. “Your wisdom, stature and service-oriented leadership will be a source of inspiration to our students, staff, alumni and partners.”

The chancellor’s role is a ceremonial one; he is titular head of the university and is elected in accordance with the university statutes. The incumbent serves a five-year term and may be re-elected for only one more term

Moses

hy skool toe moes stap

When Francisca Darkoh, a postgraduate student at Stellenbosch University (SU), hosted her first soup kitchen, she only had two bags of flour and a dream to feed vetkoek to about 20 hungry students

The next thing she knew, she was collecting a bakkie-load of donated food from Greenpeace SA, everything from whole chickens and fresh produce to cakes and milk tarts “I didn’t even have pots that were big enough,” she recalled “So, I borrowed some, rallied a few friends and we made it happen ” That soup kitchen, hosted at Russel Botman House mid last year, fed more than 100 students and marked the beginning of a growing student-led movement to fight food insecurity at SU Now operating under the trademark FOODBYFRANNIDEE and, in collaboration with the Listen, Live and Learn (LLL) programme, Darkoh leads a regular soup kitchen serving hundreds of meals during critical periods such as exam time and registration, when students often run out of money or cannot afford to travel home

For Darkoh, a Mandela Rhodes scholar who is pursuing an MSc in physiological sciences, it’s a labour of love, fostering dignity and building community

RISING FROM HARDSHIP

It’s not only Darkoh’s compassion that sets her apart, but also her extraordinary resilience She arrived at SU thanks to a hockey bursary in 2019

As a Matie she quickly proved herself both academically and socially, majoring in biochemistry and physiology, and holding several residence leadership roles But in 2022 Darkoh suffered a shocking setback

During her honours year she was hospitalised with sepsis for five months, following bacterial meningitis “At first they didn’t know what was wrong with me I was regularly doing CrossFit, and was healthy and active Suddenly I was in high care at Tygerberg Hospital with my organs shutting down ”

She lost parts of her feet to dry gangrene and underwent six surgeries, including a partial foot amputation

“I was in a wheelchair for nearly a year,” she said “It was scary The pain was intense But I had so much support from friends, lecturers and doctors My nurse even came to my graduation ”

Now doing her masters, Darkoh is researching blood-based diagnostics for sepsis She also continues to manage her mobility, attending weekly appointments with a biokineticist and adapting her lifestyle to cope with physical limitations “I just take it step by step Literally ”

A MISSION BORN FROM GRATITUDE

Darkoh, a former Stirling High School learner from East London, attributes her tenacity and sense of purpose to the generosity of others “I didn’t get this far on my own,” she insisted “I’ve been helped by really wonderful people who supported me through

Spreading warmth in winter

The Stellenbosch Homeless Forum and the Stellenbosch Municipality helped to provide various homeless persons with clothes and a hot meal as part of the second annual Street Store Winter Readiness outreach at the weekend.

During the outreach, held at the Stellenbosch Town Hall on Saturday (21 June), an estimated 600 locals in need had the opportunity to “shop” for winter outfits and received a blanket According to executive mayor Jeremy Fasser the event was not a handout, but rather a hand up

“We are under no illusion that this event alone will solve the complex and deeply rooted cause of homelessness Homelessness is not just a lack of shel-

ter, it is often the outcome of many, many challenges like mental health issues, unemployment, family breakdown, addiction and more,” he said “But while we may not have all the answers, we know that acts of kindness, moments of connection and visible passion can plant the seeds of hope ”

The municipality and its Department of Community Development thanked all stakeholders that formed pary of the heart-warming initiative: Serve Stellenbosch, Stellenbosch Night Shelter, U-turn Ministries, Right to Care, Department of Social Development, ACVV, Helderberg Omgee and Shoprite

thick and thin From my mom, Ruth, who raised us alone after my father left when I was six, to teachers, friends, even strangers ”

One such person is a former teacher who supported her since matric, helping with everything from a dance dress to bedding and travel

As Primaria of Russel Botman House last year and now an intern in the LLL programme, Darkoh is also intentional about succession She’s relieved that her friend Nothando Ndlovu, a social work student who has been cooking up a storm with her from the start, will take over the soup kitchen project

WORKING FOR CHANGE

While her work is widely recognised by SU students and staff, it hasn’t been easy to formalise “There are so many hurdles to providing food to people,” Darkoh said “Safety concerns and legal issues mean that the university’s official structures can’t be involved directly and that makes it tricky ”

She’s implemented her own risk measures such as indemnity and consent forms for photos, but still dreams of institutionalising the soup kitchen project “There are so many people who want to donate or contribute through volunteering I’m just grateful we’ve managed to channel that goodwill and positive energy into something meaningful ”

Darkoh said she felt fortunate for having embraced the opportunity to make a positive contribution while at SU It has inspired her to continue to

focus on social-impact work in future “My main inspiration to work hard and to become successful is to create a better life for my family and support my mother I want to make her life easier, because after everything she’s been through, she deserves to rest My mom will forever be my role-model and hero She’s never given up andhas such a forgiving spirit ”

Darkoh’s advice to students who want to make a difference is to start small “You don’t have to be the loudest person in the room Small actions matter. And if you don’t fit into someone else’s box, make your own You’ll find your own niche ” She also cautioned against waiting for perfect conditions “You’ll never feel ready; just start You’ll learn by doing by making mistakes, by trusting the wrong people, by falling and getting up again ”
