‘Maak munisipale hulp toeganklik’

Student changing world for good
In a country where youth unemployment remains one of the highest in the world and poverty continues to limit opportunity, Abigail Larsen is building a solution that connects young people directly to the heart of change
At only 21, the third-year BCom International Business student at Stellenbosch University (SU) is co-developing a groundbreaking digital platform designed to mobilise a new generation of volunteers, leaders and social entrepreneurs
Larsen is the mastermind behind the development of Thallo, a social media platform connecting volunteers with organisations and charities, aiming to bridge the gap between socially aware individuals and NGOs She describes the app as a mix between Instagram and LinkedIn; it will also feature a marketplace for NGO products and a gamified system that builds social capital
Originally from KwaZulu-Natal, Larsen arrived at SU with a heart for people and a growing passion for social entrepreneurship She initially planned to study medicine but realised she could also impact people’s lives positively in other ways
Larsen currently leads the social impact portfolio at Lydia Residence, where she has created volunteering opportunities, a student food and essentials cupboard, and a range of outreach initiatives “We’ve done things like an SPCA drive, a feeding scheme and social impact days at local schools It’s been such a joy and a privilege,” she says
PASSIONATEVOLUNTEER
Larsen’s passion for social impact originated from her own extensive experiences
as a volunteer After volunteering with NGOs in India, Rwanda and across South Africa, she saw a growing frustration among young people who wanted to contribute but didn’t know where to begin “There’s a gap between individuals who want to make a difference in the world and organisations who need skilled volunteers,” she notes
The idea for Thallo, named after the Greek word for growth, took shape when she entered a global social entrepreneurship competition, the Hult Prize Challenge, where participants were tasked with building a business that addresses one of the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals

volunteering opportunities are visible and searchable, she believes Thallo will make it easier for people to become involved
“This could transform not only SA, but also mobilise our generation for real, sustainable impact Whether people want to fight human trafficking, volunteer at an animal shelter, or support upliftment programmes for women, the app offers tailored pathways to action,” Larsen says
“People want to be part of something bigger than themselves They want to know their life is influencing someone else’s ”
ing Thallo’s beta version is set to launch by the end of the year, and Stellenbosch will be the initial test site thanks to strong relationships with the SU’s Centre for the Advancement of Social Impact and Transformation “They are very excited,” says Larsen “Hopefully by the beginning of next year, everything will be in place ”
BUILTONFAITH,FUELLEDBYACTION
While Thallo may be high-tech, its roots are deeply personal Larsen’s belief in the power of service is shaped by her Christian faith “Everything in this life, everything that I do, is for the glory of the Lord,” she says “It’s not in my strength; it’s not my will If the Lord wants it to happen, He’ll make it happen ”
That faith gives her resilience and perspective “Every opportunity I get, I step through the door and try my best If it doesn’t work out, I know the Lord has another plan ”
Larsen and her development team recently presented their concept for Thallo in Johannesburg as part of the national round of the Hult Prize Challenge and they’re now awaiting news about funding for their project
She explains that the app will also allow young people to initiate their own community-driven solutions, giving them a centralised platform to promote and coordinate efforts She’s seen how many local initiatives, for example a Stellenbosch fundraiser for children’s shoes, are often organised informally through WhatsApp statuses and word of mouth

Both individuals and organisations will be able to create profiles on Thallo, making it easy to discover causes that align with users’ passions and location “We realised that some charities struggle to create awareness; this is a platform where you can put in your location, and you can see the organisations close by that are doing community work.”
A key innovation of Thallo is how it recognises and validates the impact of its users “Mental health is one of the biggest challenges of our generation,” Larsen remarks “It has been statistically proven that to get out of a depressive rut, helping others or serving someone is the best thing that you can do ”
To encourage engagement, Thallo gamifies the experience Users earn badges and can build a digital CV of their volunteer-
Larsen is also quick to give credit and thanks to the people supporting her “There are four of us in the Thallo team and my family as well as my friends are incredibly supportive ”
She believes her generation has immense potential “Our generation is the most socially aware and socially engaged They want to know they are not just leaving an inheritance They are leaving a legacy ” Her advice to others? “Just do it Just start Look at what is available to you and think what you can do with what is in your hands It may feel like a mountain, but all you have to do is to take one step and then another step and one more Before you know it, you’re literally halfway up the mountain and there’s this beautiful view and you can’t imagine how you even got there!”

ButtaNuttisgrowing
What was started by Antoine van Heerden during his final year of mechanical engineering studies at Stellenbosch University (SU), when he began roasting and blending nut butters for sale at local markets, is now a South African market leader in plant-based dairy alternatives
The aptly named ButtaNutt has secured a 54% equity investment from the PSG Group. The transaction was effected last month, with the remaining shareholding retained by the founding management team, led by Van Heerden, founder and CEO
These days ButtaNutt is no longer bound to campus and is based in Paarl It has grown from a single-product start-up to a well-established name in the local food innovation landscape
With a focus on natural, minimally processed products, its range of nut butters and dairy alternatives has found favour with South African consumers looking for healthy and delicious food choices.
The investment by PSG Group includes growth capital to support ButtaNutt’s expansion
ButtaNutt currently produces double the plant-based milk volumes compared to the prior year This significant increase in capacity was made possible by the commissioning of a state-of-the-art processing and packaging facility in 2024, following a strategic investment from PepsiCo in 2022
This capacity expansion has also driven job creation with the company now employing 135 staffers Prior to this, when they moved to the new Paarl facility in 2022, the business had 102 employees
Dries Mellet, director at PSG Group, says the decision to partner with ButtaNutt aligns with the ambition to partner with strong management teams to build large, profitable South African businesses
“ButtaNutt is a proudly South African business, and they’ve built a brand that resonates with consumers The business is led by entrepreneurial founders who are passionate about what they do ButtaNutt is a fast-growing business in an industry that is growing globally and we are excited to be part of its next chapter,”
Mellet says The investment is further
strengthened by the involvement of Tertius Carstens, former CEO of the Pioneer Foods Group, who now serves on the ButtaNutt board
What began as a side hustle selling roasted macadamias from Van Heerden’s university residence in 2012, has grown into one of South Africa’s most inspiring small business success stories
“Back then, I didn’t have a grand plan,” he recalls “I was a second-year engineering student at Stellenbosch, just trying to do something creative with my parents’ macadamia harvest The nut butter idea came almost by accident But from the start, there was something special about the product, and the feedback we got from customers was overwhelmingly positive ”
From grinding nuts in his digs and selling jars at local farmers’ markets, Van Heerden’s commitment to the craft and passion for entrepreneurship has taken the business through every phase of growth
The turning point came when ButtaNutt began to experiment with nut milks, which have become its flagship products
“Nut milks became our big

bet,” Van Heerden explains “After years of trials, some travel to the United States to study market trends, and finally, a lot of investment into infrastructure, we managed to create a local product that could compete with international alternatives, with a proudly South African flavour ” Dan Hugo, co-owner and chief marketing officer at ButtaNutt adds: “We have always positioned ourselves as something a little

RUtakesleagueglory
Chance to play for promotion awaits
In a clash that lived up to all expectations Raithby Universals emerged victorious over Sir Lowrians this past Saturday (14 June), securing the Northern League championship title in a dramatic 23-20 triumph
The highly-anticipated encounter, featuring two previously unbeaten sides, drew a massive crowd to Raithby Sports Ground, including Stellenbosch Mayor Jeremy Fasser and several council members, all eager to witness who would claim bragging rights and the coveted championship.
Sir Lowrians had an early opportunity to draw first blood with a penalty directly in front of the posts, but their usually reliable kicker, Randy Brinkhuis, uncharacteristically pushed the attempt wide. It was Raithby who capitalised first, with seasoned flyhalf Brandon Manuel, clearly keen to make a statement against his former club, slotting a penalty to open the scoring. Sir Low quickly responded with a converted try, showcasing their attacking prowess. A major turning point in the first half saw the visitors lose their captain and eighthman to a red card. Despite being a man down, Sir Lowrians impressively
rallied, finding their rhythm and adding another converted try and two penalties to their tally. Manuel could only manage one more penalty for Raithby before the break, leaving the half-time score at 6-20 in favour of Sir Lowrians, who seemed poised to take the spoils
The second half began with RU showing renewed determination. Manuel quickly added another penalty, narrowing the deficit to 9-20. Fifteen minutes into the half, the home team made several strategic changes that paid dividends. Soon after, they crossed for a converted try, bringing the score to a tantalising 16-20, with Sir Lowrians still clinging to the lead.
As the match entered its dying stages Raithby pressed hard, creating numerous scoring opportunities that often led to mistakes With just five minutes remaining, it appeared Sir Low were destined to be crowned champions. However, RU seized a final opportunity. After Sir Lowrians kicked the ball downfield, the home team launched a counter-attack, moving the ball from side to side This brilliant passage of play culminated in their inspirational eighthman and captain, Ian Kampies, crashing over the tryline for the match-winning score.

Manuel, cool under pressure, converted the try, pushing RU into a 23-20 lead as the final whistle blew
The victory not only secured the Northern League title for RU, it also saw them maintain their unbeaten record. Both teams will now compete in the Top 9 Promotional League, which commences next month. They will join seven other clubs in vying for promotion to Super League C.

VDE bankvas teen Maties
Avril Fillies
