Gevangenisse lei totgroot kommer

Jana Scheepers

Botany-artexhibitlaunched

The launch of the first permanentbotanical-art collection, the Jamesand Shirley Sherwood BotanicalArt Collection, in the StellenboschUniversity Botanical Gardens (SUBG) lastFriday(8May) was abittersweet occasion owingtothe lossofaleadingbotanist in the wake of this milestone momentand the fact thatSUBG was opening itsdoors to both botany and art loversalike.

The collection showcases various botanical artists andscientific illustrators producingdrawings of some of the SUBG’smost rare, indigenous plants.

Artcurator Karen Steward saidthe first seeds forthe art collection were planted by the late Dr Donovan Kirkwood.“He made aplant list, an accession list based on the most critically endangered and rare plants in the SUBG collection, identifiedaspriorities for illustration. He and Annarie [Senekal]worked really hard over quite afew months, creatingalist withfloweringtimesso artists could coordinate their schedules around the plants.”

Kirkwood died last August in the Jonkershoek mountains pursuinghis passion, gathering botanical specimens.

Senekaliscurrent acting SUBG curator and along with the garden’steam, she helped theartists understand the biology, life cycles andotherscientific aspects of the plants they chose to sketch

Speciessuch as the marasmodes are extinct inthe wild, but since the SUBG team isworking to propagateand reintroduce the flower into its natural habitat, the artists hada unique opportunity to see them.

Kirkwood’s contribution to the collection was highlighted throughout the day and his father, Eddie Kirkwood, cut the ribbon to the galleryspace. An earlier drawing ofhis is also part of the collection.

Among the artists who answered the call from the SUBG wasSibonelo Chiliza, Julie Ah-Fa andDaleenRoodt

Roodt, aKwaZulu-Natal-based botanical artist, chose to work on vellum, made of calfskin, giving her illustrations a dreamyfeeling

“Itisverydifferent than working on paper, which is absorbent,”she explained. “Working with vellum is almost like paintingonglass, so you have to work very dry andbuilduplayersof paint on top of each other.”

Despite the time-consuming process, Roodt saidthe jewel-like effect of the work and its ability to change as light during the day changes is what she wanted to create.

Theaim of the collectionistodraw more art lovers to the botanical world andvice versa.Senekalsaidprojects for thecollection are alreadyinthe works, butmeanwhile someofthe best botanical artists’ workcan be viewed.

Klaassenmakes hermarkin hermarki motorsport

Atjust 23 years old, South African Puck Klaassen has carved out a remarkable placefor herselfin the world of rally-raid –movingfrom the vineyards of Stellenbosch to being a Dakar stage winner earlier this year in onlyher second year in thesport.

Awayfrom the cockpit, Klaassen leads alife as varied as the terrain she races on. Raised on asmall winefarm, shehas recentlytaken up winemakingasahobby while balancing her studies–a BA in business administrationand digital innovation –with an increasingly demandingracing career.

“I’ve alwaysloved being active and outdoors,” she says. “For me it’s aboutfinding abalance between enjoying life, travelling and stayingfocusedonmygoals.”

Motorsport has always been part of Klaassen’s DNA. Growing up in South Africa, she was introduced tobikesand gokarts by her father, Sebastiaan. She briefly steppedaway from racingto pursue show jumping –competing at up to 1,40 m– but the pull of motorsportneverfaded.

“Lookingback, that break made me realise that racing has always been my biggest passion,” she reflects

Her entry into rally-raid was as bold as it was unexpected. With no prior experience in cars or navigation, Klaassen lined up at the Dakar Classicafter just months of preparation.

“We reallythrew ourselvesinthe deep end,” sheadmits. “The goal was simply to finish.”

BIGGESTLESSON

What followed wasasteep learning curve, adapting from the intensityof motocross to the endurance and strategyof

rally-raid. “It’s completely different. You’re racing for hours, working closely with a co-driver and constantly thinking ahead. The biggest lesson for me was patience.”

Thatpatience paid off. In only her second yearinthe sport, Klaassenclaimed aDakar stage victory, becomingone of a select group of womentoachieve the feat.

“It was one of the highlights of my life Justcompeting at Dakarfelt unbelievable, so towin astage so early on wassomethingI never expected.”

The resulthas strengthened herbelief, but not changed her mindset. “Itgaveme confidence thatIcan compete at that level, but Irealise Istill have alot to learn.”

Centraltoher success is her partnership withArgentinian co-driver Augusto Sanz.

“Trust and communicationare everything,” sheexplains. “Yourely on each other completely overlongstages.”

Klaassen credits much of her development tothe demanding conditions closerto home. Training andracing in South Africa –and extensively in Namibia –has been instrumental in fast-tracking herprogress.

“The terrain is tough and unforgiving, andthe level of competition is high.”

FAMILIARTERRAIN

That connectiontohome remains a key part of her journey. Klaassen is set to compete in the South AfricanRally-Raid Championship this season, aprospect she describes as particularly meaningful

“It’s really special for me. Ispend alot of timeracing overseas, so to be back in SA around familiar terrain and people is something Ilove.”

She is equally emphatic about thechampionship’s role in her overalldevelopment

“The level is really high in SA and the terrain is super demanding, so it’s perfect for staying sharp,”Klaassen says.

“It givesmeproper race mileage and helps me to keep improving between bigger international races. It’snot just preparation, it’sproper competition.”

Herbreakthroughonthe international stage came at the Abu Dhabiround of the World Rally-Raid Championship, where she surprised even herself by finishing the

prologue in fourthplace.

“I went in withnoexpectations and finished theprologue in P4. That’s when I realised Icould competeatthat level.”

While she acknowledges thepressures of being afemale driver in ademanding discipline, Klaassen remains focused on performance.

“At thestart Ifelt Ihad to prove myself more, but now it’s about improving and lettingthe resultsspeak.”

Looking ahead, her ambitions are clear. Withastrong team behind her, she is targeting consistent front-running performances, withaDakar podium firmlyin sight. Long term, her goal is to step up to thetop-tierUltimate (T1+) class.

Fornow, she remains focused on the journey.“Dakar teaches you to never give up,” she pointsout

“It’s unpredictable, it’s tough, butthat’s what makes it so special. You just keep pushing forward.”
