Tourism spurt in S’bosch A study shows that Stellenbosch’s many tourism attractions and venues, such as this wine experience at Wederburg, has generated R13 billion for the town over the past year.

Major player in the local economy

W

hether it is the wine, the hiking trails, the rich history or the culinary delights, the greater Stellenbosch’s tourism sector remains a major player in the local economy, generating R13 billion in the last year.

According to the Visit Stellenbosch’s annual Tourism Economic Impact Study, more than 1,35 million overnight visitors generated R13 billion for the town. The study, now in its second year, provides an evidence-based measure of tourism’s contribution to the local economy. The latest findings show that along with the billions generated, tourism supported 48 007 direct, indirect and induced jobs across the Stellenbosch Municipality. “Tourism is one of Stellenbosch’s greatest opportunities to create lasting economic value,” explained Annemie Liebenberg, CEO of Visit Stellenbosch. “Every visitor supports local businesses, creates employment and contributes to stronger communities. That is why destination management matters. Our role is not simply to attract visitors, but to ensure tourism grows sustainably, benefits residents and leaves Stellenbosch stronger for future generations.” Liebenberg added that the findings demonstrate far more than visitor growth. “These results show what is

possible when research, partnership and long-term thinking come together behind a shared vision.”

uncertainty and increasingly cautious consumer spending. The results point to a destination that has moved beyond post-pandemic recovery and into a new phase of resilient, sustainable growth.

A STORY IN NUMBERS Every day tourism contributes an estimated R35 million to Stellenbosch’s economy. Behind every visitor is a local story – jobs created, businesses supported, entrepreneurs empowered and communities strengthened through a thriving visitor economy. The latest Tourism Economic Impact Study, commissioned by Visit Stellenbosch and independently compiled by Futureneer Advisors, confirms tourism remains one of the region’s most important economic drivers and demonstrates how a shared destination strategy is delivering measurable value for residents, businesses and visitors alike. The research shows that international overnight arrivals increased by 12% to 641 405 visitors, while domestic overnight tourism grew by an impressive 21% to 711 330 visitors. These figures reinforce Stellenbosch’s position as one of South Africa’s leading tourism destinations and demonstrate the growing strength of a balanced, year-round visitor economy. While direct tourism value added remained stable at R6,3 billion, the sector continued to generate significant economic value despite global economic

MEASURABLE RESULTS Tourism success does not happen by chance. According to the Visit Stellenbosch team the success is the result of long-term planning, strategic investment and collaboration. That strategy focuses on growing yearround demand, encouraging longer stays, expanding the geographic spread of visitors across the destination, supporting tourism businesses, promoting inclusive tourism experiences and ensuring that tourism growth benefits local communities. Stellenbosch mayor Jeremy Fasser welcomed the findings and acknowledged the collective effort that continues to position Stellenbosch as a premier visitor destination. “These results demonstrate what can be achieved when Stellenbosch Municipality, Visit Stellenbosch, our tourism industry and local communities work together with a shared vision,” he said. “The municipality is proud to invest in and partner with Visit Stellenbosch to grow a visitor economy that attracts investment and enhances quality of life for our residents. We are building a destination whose success benefits everyone.”

The study found around 40% of international visitors to the Western Cape visit Stellenbosch, while 641 405 international visitors stayed overnight. Along with visitors from overseas, domestic overnight visitors is also up by 21%. The Value of Tourism is Visit Stellenbosch’s annual economic-impact study and forms part of the organisation’s commitment to evidence-based destination management. Independently compiled by Futureneer Advisors using data from Statistics South Africa and South African Tourism, the study measures tourism’s direct, indirect and induced contribution to Stellenbosch’s economy, employment and visitor volumes. By tracking tourism’s performance year-on-year, the study provides the insights needed to inform decision-making, guide destination development and demonstrate the value of investing in tourism. The findings provide a roadmap for the future. Visit Stellenbosch will continue investing in destination marketing, destination development, research, industry support and collaborative partnerships that strengthen the visitor economy while protecting the unique character, cultural heritage and natural environment that make Stellenbosch one of the world’s most desirable destinations. Great destinations do not happen by chance. They are built through partnership, guided by evidence and inspired by a shared vision.

Locals win at Shiraz SA Challenge Stellenbosch and Franschhoek wineries continue to shine among the best of the best, this time appearing among the winners of the 14th Shiraz SA Challenge. The winners were revealed at the awards ceremony and tasting of the finalist wines at Blacksmith’s Kitchen and The Venue, respectively, last Thursday (6 August). This year 18 winners were awarded in the three categories – rosé (1), shiraz blends (5) and shiraz (12) – with Spier pocketing two awards, one in the blends and one in the shiraz categories. tion Joseph’s Legacy 2024; Quoin Rock Simonsberg Blend 2023; Spier Creative Block 3 2022; and Zevenwacht Tin Mine Red 2023. Benguela Cove Lighthouse Rosé 2026 is this year’s 2026 Shiraz Rosé winner. The Bernard Podlashuk Shiraz Trophy and prize, sponsored by Bellingham, was presented for the fifth time with Stellenrust Wine Estate revealed as the 2026 winner. Journey’s End, winner last year, and Lomond Wine Estate were the runners-up. MAKING A STATEMENT The judging panel, chaired by La Motte’s cellar master Edmund Terblanche, comprised Elzette du Preez, Denzel Swarts (Zoetendal), Samarie Smith-Meletiou and Bertho van der Westhuizen (Alto Estate). “The single variety Shiraz/Syrah category is where South Africa is really making a statement,” Terblanche said. “Wines were beautifully integrated, handled with a lighter touch of oak and by the final round, the top 30 wines were so close in quality, it really put our tasting abilities to the test! The category for blends was particularly enjoyable; the wines offered a wide spectrum of flavours, combining generosity with harmony.”

He added that although the number of rosé entries were few, they were all young and fresh, displaying the new trend of light salmon and onion skin colour that reflect a dry clinical style. “The Shiraz SA Challenge continues to raise the bar for South African wine,” concluded Terblanche. “Each year brings new stories, new expressions and, above all, an unwavering commitment to excellence.”

Shiraz SA extends an invitation to all Shiraz aficionados to participate in the countrywide celebration of Shiraz on SA National Shiraz Day on Friday 21 August, which also marks the start of Seven Days of Celebrating Shiraz. Participating wineries and restaurants will present events to celebrate this noble cultivar. For more information, visit www.shirazsa.co.za.

Sundowns retire Adams’s number 8 jersey

The late Jayden Adams in action for Mamelodi Sundowns.

Mamelodi Sundowns have announced that the number eight jersey worn by the late Jayden Adams will be retired for the 2026-’27 season, following the midfielder’s tragic death last month. Adams (25) died on Saturday 11 July, just weeks after representing South Africa at the FIFA World Cup. The body of the Stellenbosch star was discovered at a property in the Schotschekloof suburb of Cape Town, with the police opening an inquest into his death. No official cause of death has been released, with authorities appealing to the public to refrain from speculation while the investigation continues. The announcement by the Betway Premiership club has been met with widespread support from the footballing fraternity, which continues to mourn

the loss of one of the country’s brightest talents. “In honour of Jayden Adams, the number eight jersey will be retired for the 2026-’27 season – a fitting tribute to a player whose impact on the Yellow Nation will never be forgotten,” the club said in a statement. “The number eight will forever carry Jayden Adams’ name, memories and the place he holds in the Mamelodi Sundowns family.” Adams enjoyed a remarkable rise through South African football. He began his professional career at Stellenbosch FC, before making the move to Mamelodi Sundowns in January last year. During his time at the Pretoria-based club, he won league titles and the CAF Champions League in 2026. At the FIFA World Cup, he featured

in all three of Bafana Bafana’s group stage matches, starting against Mexico and the Czech Republic, and coming on as a substitute against South Korea. Notably, he played in the Czech Republic match shortly after learning of his grandmother’s death, demonstrating his commitment to the national team during a difficult personal time. Following Sundowns’ CAF Champions League victory earlier this year, Adams dedicated his medal to former Stellenbosch FC teammate and friend Oshwin Andries, who tragically died in 2023, highlighting his thoughtful character off the pitch. The retirement of his jersey number serves as a permanent reminder of Adams’ contribution to Mamelodi Sundowns and South African football.

Chaplains at service of dedication The Chaplains Alert South Africa (Casa) hosted its second dedication service at the Stellenbosch Fire Station on Saturday 1 August. The local station is a venue that holds deep significance in the history of the chaplaincy ministry. Nearly 13 years ago, on Christmas Day, firefighters were involved in a serious accident and found themselves in need of pastoral care and trauma support. It was during that time that the chaplaincy journey of serving first responders truly began. Thus, returning to the fire station for the dedication was both symbolic and deeply meaningful. It also gave guests the opportunity to experience, first-hand, the environment in which the uniformed services faithfully serve their communities daily. Since May, candidate chaplains have journeyed through months of training, including a practical training day in June, followed by operational station visits to Fire & Rescue Services, Metro Ambulance Services, Law Enforcement and Traffic Services. “We give thanks to God that all eight candidate chaplains successfully completed their training and were dedicated into ministry,” Dr Daniel Solomons, chief pastoral

service were based on Philippians 1:6: “I am convinced and confident of this very thing, that he who has begun a good work in you will continue to perfect and complete it until the day of Christ Jesus.” Solomons encouraged the new chaplains with the following words: “Allow God to continue to complete the work within you.” He sounded a cautionary note: “Being a chaplain is not about having all the

answers. It is not about being the strongest person in the room. It is about allowing God to continue His work in us as we walk with others through their pain. Every difficult call-out, every prayer whispered beside an ambulance, every conversation with a firefighter, police officer, paramedic, or disaster victim becomes another opportunity for God to shape us into the image of Christ. “As you are dedicated today, remember your greatest qualification is not your training, your experience or your uniform, but that you belong to Christ, and He is faithfully at work within you.” The following well-known, timeless hymn the newly dedicated chaplains sang reflected this very philosophy: “Here I am, Lord. It is I, Lord. I have heard you calling in the night. I will go, Lord, if you lead me. I will hold your people in my heart.” Coming from different backgrounds and professions, their role of serving those who serve others is voluntary, and will be up and running in Stellenbosch, Paarl, Ceres, Saldahna, Hermanus and Atlantis. “We pray that God will bless each of them as they provide pastoral care, emotional support and the hope of Christ to first responders and those affected by crisis and tragedy,” Solomons said. “What a privilege to witness God’s faithfulness again!”

Swop the boardroom for the riverbank for 1st duck race Stellenbosch businesses are invited to swap the boardroom for the riverbank this September as the inaugural Stellenbosch Corporate Duck Race promises a day of creativity, camaraderie and community spirit. Hosted by the Rotary Club of Stellenbosch in partnership with Spier Wine Farm, the event will take place on Saturday 19 September, transforming the Eerste River into a colourful spectacle as branded rubber ducks race for glory. Businesses from across the greater Stellenbosch region are encouraged to “adopt” a duck and give it a corporate makeover. Supplied by Rotary, each duck becomes a blank canvas for companies to showcase their brand personality, with prizes, bragging rights and plenty of entertainment on offer as they compete in a light-hearted race down the river. While the event is designed to be fun, it also serves a meaningful purpose. The Corporate Duck Race offers businesses an opportunity to strengthen team spirit, connect with fellow organisations, increase brand visibility and demonstrate their commitment to giving back to the local community. Every duck entered helps support the GBV Centre Stellenbosch, a pioneering

24-hour facility providing free, comprehensive care to survivors of gender-based violence. The centre offers medical treatment, trauma counselling, legal assistance and emergency accommodation, ensuring vulnerable individuals have access to essential services whenever they need them. According to the Rotary Club of Stellenbosch, they wanted to create an event that brings the local business community together in a fun and memorable way while making a real difference where it matters most. Every duck on the river represents a business choosing to invest in both its community and a brighter future for those affected by gender-based violence. Whether companies are entering to unleash their creativity, build stronger teams, entertain clients or simply support an important local cause, the inaugural Stellenbosch Corporate Duck Race promises an unforgettable day on the banks of the Eerste River. The participation fee is R2 500. Businesses interested in signing up and participating can adopt their corporate duck by contacting can contacting Simon Mills on 063 968 6735 or spmills62@gmail.com, or Jackie Hunter on 082 574 1289 or secretary@rotarystellenbosch.org.za.

Young graduates cooking up a storm The second group of QCTOaccredited Food Service Assistant (food handler) Programme graduates crossed the stage at Bergzicht Training and Development recently. The programme, funded through the Stellenbosch Municipality’s Youth Skills Development Programme, equips unemployed youth with nationally recognised qualifications and the confidence to pursue meaningful careers in the hospitality industry. Congratulating the graduates, PR councillor Stephanie Heneke reminded them of the opportunities in the growing hospitality sector. “The food service industry is one of the fastest-growing sectors of our economy. Every hotel, restaurant, hospital, school, guesthouse and tourism establishment

depends on skilled food service professionals. This qualification is far more than a certificate – it is a stepping stone towards economic empowerment and self-sufficiency,” she said. “Many successful chefs, restaurant owners and hospitality managers started exactly where you are today, with a passion to serve, a willingness to learn and the determination to work hard. As Stellenbosch Municipality, we remain committed to investing in our people because when we invest in skills development, we invest in stronger families, stronger communities and a stronger local economy.” Michelle Aalbers of Stellenbosch Municipality emphasised the programme’s importance to local economic development:

“The Municipal Youth Skills Development Programme makes a tangible and meaningful contribution to the development of local youth. Its success is measured not only by the number of participants who secure employment and remain employed, but by the remarkable personal transformation that takes place.” Graduate Sifiso April, who was recognised as the programme’s top achiever, reflected on his journey: “I’m smiling big today because I’m officially a qualified food service assistant. Bergzicht changed me. I arrived scared and unsure of myself, but I leave with skills, confidence and a family who believed in me. Thank you to Stellenbosch Municipality for investing in young people like me. I won’t waste this opportunity.”

The newly graduated crop of food service assistants with dignitories who attended the event at Bergzicht Training and Development.

Fellow graduate Achumile Ntanzi described the programme as life changing. “This opportunity has helped me grow mentally, physically and emotionally. I feel stronger, more focused and proud to be a role model for others. Thank you for investing in my future.” Addressing graduates and guests, Nathalie Skippers, social development coordinator of Bergzicht, highlighted the organisa-

tion’s commitment to changing lives through skills development. “Our vision is to enable self-leadership and employability, and this is evident through our 98% placement rate and 84% job retention rate achieved in 2025,” she said. Many of the graduates have received job offers during their workplace practical training. Employers interested in recruiting certified graduates can send an email to studentsupport@bergzicht.org.za.

Buys elected as new deputy mayor Dr Rudi Buys is the new deputy mayor of Stellenbosch. Buys was appointed during a special council meeting last Wednesday (5 August), where he ran uncontested to fill the post left vacant when former deputy mayor and Ward 21 councillor Mynard Slabbert stepped down from the role in May. “To be given this assignment to serve is an extraordinary privilege and deeply humbling. I am thoroughly committed to our town and all its communities, and consider it more than a mission, but a cause, to work alongside our mayor, fellow councillors and residents to build the proud future we all want for every person who calls Stellenbosch home,” Buys said in a statement. Slabbert was asked to vacate the position as deputy in May after the DA caucus brought a vote of no confidence against him (“Slabbert steps down,” Eikestadnuus, 4 June). The DA’s Federal Executive applied

clause 6.2.6.3 of its federal constitution, which can be invoked when a party representative has “lost the confidence of his or her caucus”. Slabbert was elected as ward councillor in a by-election on 8 March 2023, after the resignation of former councillor Rikus Badenhorst, who took up a position in Parliament in the National Council of Provinces. Slabbert remains a DA member and part of the Stellenbosch council. In a statement, the council welcomed Buys to his new position. “Dr Buys joins the Executive Mayoral Committee with more than three decades of experience in education, public leadership and community service. In earlier roles he served as a spokesperson for the Western Cape minister of Education, as a youth commissioner of the province and as a member of several national advisory councils to [former] President Thabo Mbeki. “Dr Buys also specialised in education and how to lead transformation at universities and colleges, over time appointed

to executive roles and to the governing councils and boards of several public and private institutions. He held appointments among others as faculty dean, chief academic officer, and vice-president,” the statement read. Buys studied theology at Stellenbosch University and went on to serve as a peace monitor during the first democratic elections in 1994. He was elected to serve on his local municipal ward committee in 2021 and served as chairperson of the DA’s party branch. Before joining the Stellenbosch council, he also served as a councillor in the Cape Winelands District Municipality. Stellenbosch mayor Jeremy Fasser congratulated Buys on his election. “Dr Buys is a respected leader with an impressive track record in education, governance and public service,” Fasser said. “His deep understanding of Stellenbosch, together with his passion for community development and service excellence, will be a valuable asset to our municipality.”

Deadline for card replacement beckons, warns Postbank Social grant beneficiaries who have not yet switched from the Sassa gold cards to the new Postbank black cards have until month-end to complete the process before the old cards stop working. Postbank urges recipients to act now, warning that the Monday 31 August deadline is fast approaching and that delays could result in disruptions to grant payments. The gold cards are being phased out and will no longer function once the migration process is complete. Thamsanqa Cele, Postbank’s chief com-

mercial officer, said beneficiaries should not wait until August or their usual grant payment dates to make the switch. “We are already noticing a steady increase in queues at several of our card replacement sites. Based on current trends, we anticipate that queues will become considerably longer in August, which is the final month before the deadline,” Cele said.“Beneficiaries who postpone their visit until then may experience substantial delays due to the expected increase in demand.”

Postbank has deployed resources to support the migration programme. The Postbank black cards are available from selected retailers, including Shoprite, Checkers, Usave, Pick n Pay, Boxer and Spar stores. Card replacement sites are open nationwide from Monday to Friday, between 09:00 and 17:00. Beneficiaries can dial 120 355# from their mobile phones to locate their nearest replacement site. The replacement process is free. Beneficiaries are required to present a valid

South African identity document or temporary ID. Postbank advised beneficiaries not to visit Sassa offices for the switch; instead, they should visit a nearby Postbank service point or contact the bank’s call centre. The bank’s customer service teams can assist with issues including missed payments, PIN-related queries, lost or stolen cards, card reissues and declined transactions. For assistance, contact Postbank’s call centre on 0800 535 455.
