Cases of kidnapping are on the rise nationally, locally a student is one of the latest victims of this crime spree.
According to the crime statistics published by the South African Police Service, 233 cases of kidnapping were reported in the province between April and June. In nine of these a ransom was demanded, five involved cases of extortion and one was classified as human trafficking.
On Thursday 3 October, a local student was walking from a restaurant in Plein Street to her residence when she was snatched. According to police the 20-year-old was walking at
approximately 02:40 when an unknown vehicle with two occupants stopped and kidnapped her. “In the course of events the suspects demanded a ransom from the family of the hostage,” Captain Frederick C van Wyk, a provincial spokesperson, said in a statement.
“They immediately paid the money after which the victim was released on
Friday (4 October).”
After the ordeal she was immediately taken for medical examination.
Two suspects have since been charged with kidnapping and extortion after investigation by the multidisciplinary team led to the arrest of the suspects.

“Information was followed-up on and a vehicle of interest, a black BMW, was identified during preliminary investigation. The Licence Plate Recognition system was activated and the vehicle was successfully traced to the George area.
“Two foreign national men, aged 24 and 25, were found in the vehicle and detained for further investigation. An undisclosed amount of cash was found in the car including the phone used.”
The suspects have since appeared in the Stellenbosch Magistrates’ Court with their next appears set to be on Wednesday 23 October.
This is not the first case of kidnapping in the area. In June earlier this year, a 32-year-old suspect appeared in the Caledon Magistrates’ Court after being arrested in connection with the kidnapping of two students on the Franschhoek Pass.
In two separate incidents a cyclist and two University of Stellenbosch students were kidnapped and a ransom sought for their release. In both cases the abductors travelled to Grabouw with the victims.
Charnel Hattingh, Group Head of Communications and Marketing at the Fidelity Services Group, advised Stellenbosch students always to be aware of your surroundings. “If you spot anything suspicious please alert the police or your security company immediately,” she added. “Keep all doors and windows locked, don’t walk around alone at night, and avoid any dark or unfamiliar areas at night or any surrounding that makes you feel uncomfortable.”
Captain Nathalie Martin, spokesperson of Stellenbosch police, urged walkers to avoid distractions such as headphones or being absorbed in your phone when in unfamiliar or isolated areas. She said in the unfortunate experience of being taken victims should try to stay calm, comply with captors’ instructions to avoid provoking them, as sudden resistance may cause harm. Also, avoid arguing or confrontation as far as possible.
“Attempt to escape only if you see a clear, safe opportunity. Premature attempts may make your situation worse.
“If you are in a populated area try to attract attention by making noise, banging objects or signalling passersby discreetly. Take action during vulnerable moments if kidnappers are distracted or you are left alone. Assess whether this may be an opportunity to escape or call for help.”
She added that providing as many details as possible can help authorities find the suspects. “Provide as much detail as possible about the appearance of the kidnappers such as height, weight, build, hair colour, skin colour, eye colour and maybe scars or tattoos.
“If you heard abductors speak recall any distinct accents, languages or phrases they used. Detail of vehicle such as colour, type of vehicle, condition (scratches, stickers) and also the licence plate is valuable.”
Martin added that if victims have received any calls, messages or emails from their kidnappers they must not delete them, and share all communication with the authorities.
October is Mobility Month and as part of the Department of Infrastructure’s observation of the month, the Western Cape Minister of Infrastructure Tertuis Simmers, visited the MR191 road upgrades project, located south of the N1, near Paarl, continuing through the Franschhoek Pass to the Theewaterskloof dam.
of regional road infrastructure.
Additionally, this project aims also to benefit local communities from the surrounding areas of Simondium, Pierkamp and Groendal by creating 384 job opportunities and 40 contracts for local enterprises, supporting local economic development.

On Friday 4 October, around 17:00, Klapmuts police arrested a known suspect for possession of an illegal 9 mm chrome-plated pistol, the serial number of which had been removed. According to police the 24-year-old suspect was known for involvement with robberies in Klapmuts and was arrested close to a local sports field. He will appear in Paarl Magistrates’ Court on the charges.
“I am very pleased with the progress at the MR191 road upgrade project,” Simmers said. “These upgrades, and many similar projects across the province, showcase, not only the Western Cape Government’s commitment to ensure that roads are safe to travel on, but it also affirms our efforts to enable a growing economy that connects communities to opportunities that will improve the quality of people’s lives.” The project is to be completed by October 2026.
Theft of all sorts are on the rise, and Stellenbosch police is warning locals to take precautions to keep themselves and their possessions safe.
Stellenbosch police has identified various hot spots where these crimes regularly took place in September.
In George Blake, Bassi, Victoria, Andringa, Dorp, Thubelitsha and Ryneveldt Streets over the weekend many fell victim to robbery involving a weapon, whether a firearm or any other instrument. According to police suspects usually threaten victims and grab their belongings. Most incidents take place between 21:00 and 02:59.
Theft out of a motor vehicle reported to police occurred mostly on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday in the vicinity of Helshoogte, Alexander, Ryneveldt, Dr Malan and Jan Cillier Streets between 15:00 and 23:59. The criminals’ modus operandi is to smash side windows of vehicles to gain access. It seems some are not just content to steal out of vehicles, but also to steal the cars as well.
According to police most cases occurred in Doornbosch, Banghoek, Bird and Victoria Streets. Most cases occurred from Sunday to Wednesday, from 09:00 to 12:00. Last month cases of general theft were reported in Bird, Andringa, De Beer and Merriman Streets, especially on weekends. On Fridays and Saturday from 12:00 to 18:00 and 21:00 to 03:00, respectively.
Captain Nathalie Martin, spokesperson for Stellenbosch police, urged residents to park vehicles in safe spaces and to lock vehicles properly. They must also be sure to remove all valuables from view.
“Install a car-alarm system and tracker in your vehicle if possible,” she said. “Have your information of vehicle at hand to give proper description if stolen.”

The provincial agriculture department has partnered with a new venture, Soetmelksvlei, to provide genetic plant material derived from the department’s extensive fig collection at its Oudtshoorn research farm for establishment at the two farms in the Franschhoek Valley.
To mark the historic day, Dr Ivan Meyer, provincial Minister for Agriculture, Economic Development and Tourism, planted a unique and extraordinary variety of figs, the Cape Black Fig, at a tree-planting ceremony at the historic fig orchard at Soetmelksvlei on World Tourism Day Friday 27 September.
According to Dr Ilse Trautmann, the department’s Deputy Director-General of Research and Regulatory Services, its research farm in Oudtshoorn has the most extensive collection of fig cultivars in South Africa.
She also added that the Beurre pear orchard, a significant part of local agricultural history, was the first research orchard to be planted at another of the department’s research farms, Elsenburg, in 1896. Genetic material from these orchards has been preserved since 2014 under strict protocols at the South African Plant Improvement Organisation outside Stellenbosch.
“Great value can be derived from our partnership with Soetmelksvlei and our joint desire to preserve this genetic source,” added Trautmann. “The decision to offer these special fig cultivars to the heritage gardens at Babylonstoren coincided with the further expansion of its newest venture, Soetmelksvlei. This provided the ideal place to plant one of the cultivars in their historic fig orchard.”
Adele Johnson, head of Soetmelksvlei, describes it as a place that offers visitors a glimpse into farm life in the previous century.
“Soetmelksvlei, an interactive farmyard set in the late 19th century, offers visitors an opportunity to experience its unique fruit orchards and very soon newly established historic fig orchard, including the cultivar from the WCDoA.”
By planting the tree the provincial government acknowledged Soetmelksvlei’s role in preserving the Western Cape’s agricultural heritage and promoting agritourism, Meyer pointed out.
Living heritage projects such as Soetmelksvlei contribute to the provinces’s agri-tourism landscape.
“In the Western Cape, agri-tourism is a significant pillar of the provincial tourism economy,” Meyer explained.
“Wine tourism, in particular, performs very well and is an integral part of the local tourism industry. It directly contributed R3,05 billion to the South African GDP, employing 6 304 permanent employees, 4 798 casual employees during peak season, and another 2 870 casual employees in 2022.
“These farms offer wonderful experiences such as flower picking, harvesting, teaching people how to make cheese, and more. Whether you are a local or just visiting, exploring our farms is a must.”

Deesdae is Esmé by Le Clémence se Bonheur, waar ’n spesiale partytjie op

The 14th annual Stellenbosch Pageant will take place this Saturday (12 October) the Stellenbosch Town Hall.
Competing categories range from Tiny, Toddler, PreTeen, Teen, Senior and even Mrs categories with 40 finalists that will be vying for these crowns.
“The pageant is much more than just a beauty pageant or modelling competition,” pageant director Enigma von Hamburg says. “It provides a platform and opportunity for each and every contestant to grow. They rise above their circumstances and become heroes in their communities in the fight for social change, which is much needed in our communities. The pageant is also a vehicle for educating the communities to respect and show tolerance towards
people of diverse sexual orientations and cultural, religious and racial backgrounds.”
The finalists have gone through a series of judging rounds, which include a pre-judging event, a closed-door interview and, most importantly, finalists were challenged to perform community service, where they have to collaborate with the Stellenbosch Night Shelter and StellCare to showcase that they are true ambassadors of goodwill.
Saturday, each finalist will strut their stuff one last time in front of an esteemed panel of judges, in evening attire, where the new ambassadors will be crowned.
) For more information about the event, or to become a partner in terms of sponsorship, contact Von Hamburg on pageants@evhempire.co.za or send a WhatsApp message to 078 515 9645.

“Let us play together to stay together,” vra die organiseerders.

This was the vision of Khayamandi Boxing Academy (KBA) and it meant business.
During the recent school holidays three boxers from the academy represented the province at the national championships in Limpopo.
Together with their coach the three brought victory to Khayamandi’s streets.
Amahle Mthelo (13) 2023 silver medallist is now the 2024 South African gold medallist.
Endinako Nqolosa (12) was a debutant at the competition and won a silver medal, while Jamaal Eckstein (15) became a 2023 and 2024 national bronze medallist.
“My first fight in 2023 wasn’t difficult, but the experience taught me some lessons and I had to make some
improvements in the gym, to my teammates and coach for pushing me to work hard.
“It was not easy in training but since I wanted to be a champion this year, I just told myself ‘work hard girl so that you could achieve your goals’,” Amahle says.
Endinako says taking part in the national competition was tough as a first timer but with effort she managed to push herself to success.
According to Xolisani Thembani, KBA head and coach said the achievements are a testament to the incredible support and hard work behind the scenes.
“I must highlight the invaluable contribution of Nombulelo Ngolozana, who has been instrumental in handling our administrative duties and managing our social media presence.
Her dedication has played a significant role in the academy’s progress.
“I also want to extend my deepest appreciation to Dom Mazza (of Gino’s Stellenbosch). Since the establishment of KBA, Dom has been a steadfast partner, providing unwavering financial support.”
He believes KBA has the potential to expand its reach and change the lives of the boxers for the better.

154 lopies in 38.1 boulbeurte aanteken.
