‘Harvest time unsure’ Tasmin Cupido

t is too early to determine the impact that warmer temperatures and drier conditions brought on by El Niño will have on the 2027 wine grape harvest. This is the overall sentiment of wine producers, viticulturists and leaders in the wine industry, who are mostly confident that yields of the upcoming season will be offset by the industry’s climate mitigation plans. “We need to be cautious about predicting specific impacts at this stage,” warns Gerard Martin, research, development and innovation executive at South Africa Wine. “The South African Weather Service has indicated the potential for El Niño conditions to develop, but has also stressed that it is too early to determine the implications for South Africa. The wine industry is, therefore, monitoring seasonal forecasts

closely rather than assuming a particular outcome.” El Niño is a climate phenomenon driven by the warming of sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern tropical Pacific Ocean. It typically occurs every two to seven years and disrupts global weather patterns, often bringing drier, hotter conditions to Southern Africa and higher rainfall to the Americas. Its effects vary in intensity and duration, but strong events can have significant agricultural, economic and environmental consequences across multiple regions. “Our advantage today is that producers have access to increasingly sophisticated climate information and decision-support tools that allow them to respond as conditions develop,” Martin points out. The wine grape harvest typically starts

with early cultivars in the second week of January and can continue into April in later-ripening regions and varieties, explains Wanda Augustyn, head of brand and communications at South Africa Wine. HARVEST TIME “It is still too early to say whether the 2027 harvesting will start earlier or later than normal. Timing will depend on the conditions during spring, fruit set and the summer ripening period, Augustyn said. “This year, warmer and drier spring conditions advanced budding by about 10 days, demonstrating how quickly seasonal conditions can influence the harvest calender.” Johan Jordaan, cellar master at Spier Wines, says the farm’s harvest of chardonnay grapes for cap classique typically starts between 15 and 20 January.

“At this stage, we anticipate that the 2027 season could begin up to 10 days earlier than usual. However, a cool spring, even under dry conditions, could still delay the start,” Jordaan explains. At Blaauwklippen Wine Estate, harvest time generally starts in the second week of January to the first week of April, says Jaco van der Westhuizen, viticulturist at the Stellenbosch farm. “Bud burst this year was about seven to 10 days earlier than 2025, about 14 days earlier than 2024, but about the same date as in 2023,” he explains the varying times. Despite lower rainfall this winter, Jordaan’s obeservations of Spier’s vineyards indicates normal and saturated soil moisture content. “A drier, warmer spring should reduce disease pressure, but limit moisture in the soil, and stronger winds could restrict flowering,” he relates.

Joining hands in tourism As South Africa marked Tourism Month (September), Cape Town Tourism (CTT) and Visit Stellenbosch signed a Joint Marketing Agreement (JMA) to encourage visitors to stay longer and experience both destinations as part of a single Cape journey. Cape Town brings coastline, city energy and cultural attractions. Stellenbosch adds wine, food, heritage, art, nature, shopping and unique local experiences. Together, the two organisations aim to show how these distinct destinations complement one another within the same trip. The JMA was officially signed at Jordan Wine Estate in Stellenbosch on Tuesday (29 September). Said Annemie Liebenberg, CEO of Visit Stellenbosch: “Working with CTT allows us to connect two complementary destinations and create a stronger proposition for the region. Longer stays mean more visitor spend, more nights in accommodation and more opportunities for businesses across the tourism value chain to benefit. Importantly, this partnership is also about addressing seasonality and creating reasons to visit across the year.” Stellenbosch recorded more than 1,35 million overnight visitors last year, contributing an estimated R13 billion in total economic impact. The partnership builds on the strength of both destinations while creating new ways to distribute visitor demand, increase length of stay and broaden participation in the tourism economy. “Cape Town is a destination that can easily fill a holiday, but it is also the gateway to so much more of the Cape,” said CTT CEO Enver Duminy. “Stellenbosch adds another dimension to the Cape Town experience, and vice versa. There is a real opportunity to encourage

visitors to stay longer, explore more and experience the diversity of our region. This partnership gives us a platform to make that connection more visible, particularly during key travel periods and throughout the year.” Under the agreement CTT and Visit Stellenbosch will develop joint itineraries, share content and run collaborative campaigns across their digital channels, supported by joint media and trade activity. The focus includes domestic visitors during school holidays, long weekends and the festive season, while also building reasons to visit year-round and addressing seasonality. The collaboration will encourage visitors to extend their stay in either destination, showing how two distinct destinations can work together to create a richer, longer Cape experience, a joint showcase of the full breadth of experiences, in terms of campaigns, competitions and giveaways, creating opportunities for tourism businesses to participate in shared storytelling. This combined offering will be presented to travel journalists, travel sellers and

other industry marketers. Where relevant, Cape Town and Stellenbosch will be positioned as complementary destinations. James Vos, Cape Town’s Mayoral Committee member for Economic Growth, said the city’s visitor economy is showing strong momentum, with 1,44 million international overnight visitors and 1,42 million domestic overnight trips last year. “The opportunity now is to turn that demand into longer stays, greater visitor spend and wider economic benefits, where one is soft on borders and strong on vision,” he pointed out. “Visitors don’t experience destinations by municipal boundaries, and neither should our tourism thinking. This partnership puts that into practice. Every additional night creates opportunities across the tourism value chain, from accommodation and restaurants to attractions, guides, retailers and the many businesses and people who depend on tourism.” For visitors, the message is simple: “Cape Town and Stellenbosch. One more night. So much more to experience.”

 Continues from page 1. “At this stage, vineyard observations suggest a normal crop in terms of available bunches. Drier conditions and stronger wind could affect fruit set. Berry size is unlikely to be a major concern in irrigated vineyards, but it may be in the dryland blocks. Smaller berries can contribute to higher fruit concentration and quality, although they typically result in lower yields.” Van der Westhuizen predicts Blaauwklippen’s berry size will remain the same. “The weather patterns do have an influence on wine grapes, but not as severe as in summer rainfall areas, he explains. “There will be an influence [on berry size], but not very severe. Vines are desert plants, so they are very adapted to varying weather patterns.” Dr Etienne Terblanche, consultation services manager at Vinpro, says it is too early to draw conclusions about berry sizes or the 2027 crop. “Smaller berries were a feature of parts of the 2026 season, but increased fertility helped offset this, and the national harvest ultimately increased,” he points out. “Importantly, smaller berries can also contribute to concentration, and the 2026 vintage showed excellent quality potential.” RESILIENCE AMID DRYNESS Terblanche points out that adaptability is the biggest lessons producers learnt in the 2026 season, as they were forced to move from dry conditions to a period of rainfall and disease pressure in February, followed by heat spikes and compressed harvest windows in March. “Despite this, the industry delivered excellent quality,” he relates. “Precision in irrigation, canopy management, disease control, harvesting timing and cellar planning made the difference. Those lessons strengthen our preparedness for 2027, whatever the season brings.” Terblanche adds that this adaptability starts long before harvest season: “Vineyard site selection, effective soil preparation, the establishment of strong root systems and appropriate rootstock and cultivar choices are all part of building vineyards that are better able to cope with warm, dry and variable conditions.” The industry is also prepared for a water-scarce period, with water security a long-term priority of producers regardless of weather patterns. “Producers increasingly use more precise irrigation scheduling, soil and plant monitoring, climate data and region-specific decision-making to use available water as efficiently as possible,” Martin says. “South Africa Wine continues to invest in water research, climate adaptation and pactical decision support that help producers make better informed decisions.” At Blaauwklippen, Van der Westhuizen says, installation of moisture measuring probes in vineyards aids in monitoring irrigation. “This ensures that we apply the correct volumes of water at optimal timing for the vines,” he explains. “We also adjust the number of bunches per vine to make sure that optimal ripeness can be easily achieved.” Spier’s focus and drive on regenerative farming has led to improved soil moisture retention through carbon and humus levels, Jordaan relates. “Cover crops help water infiltrate the soil, while humus improves the soil’s ability to retain that moisture for vine use,” he explains. “We mowicover crops and apply mulch along the vine row to keep soils cooler and reduce water loss. We also use canopy management to reduce the leaf area and transpiraton. While this may delay ripening slightly, it may help to offset the effects of an earlier harvest.” LONG-TERM STRATEGIES Overall, the wine industry looks at climate resilience as a long-term matter and not specific to a particular season, using past learnings to reap the fruits. “Climate is a complex subject,” Jordaan says. “We have the benefit of experiencing similar conditions between 2016 and 2019, when we learnt a lot by closely monitoring our vineyards and local microclimates to be able to mitigate some of the broader weather patterns. “We continuously test and refine different approaches that help us to adapt, adjust and build resilience.”

Ek’t geweet my seisoen in die polisiediens is verby; dis tyd vir ’n nuwe seisoen.”

“Daar is hoop.

As

Young musicians shine at national music competition The 37th edition of the Hubert van der Spuy National Music Competition delivered a harmonious melody at the Endler Hall in Stellenbosch from Tuesday 22 to Saturday 26 September. The five-day competition, hosted by the Tygerberg branch of the South African Society of Music Teachers (SASMT), reached its climax with the gala concert and prize-giving on Saturday. Talented pianist Sinran Emilie Yang (10) was awarded the Johanna van der Spuy Memorial First Prize, 13-year-old flautist Henning Bouwer won the Betsie Clüver Memorial Second Prize and clarinet player Benjamin Monvoisin received the Joseph Stanford Memorial Third Prize. The top-three were among eight musicians selected as finalists from the 47 participants aged 13 and younger who partipated in the competition. On stage after the prize-giving and gala concert (behind from left) are Dr Waldo Weyer (adjudicator), Dr Marlene le Roux (patron), Henning Bouwer, Jean-Louise Moolman (adjudicator), Hilda Boonzaier (SASMT Tygerberg branch chairperson), Prof Hubert van der Spuy (founder) and Pamela Kierman (adjudicator).

Heritage awards plays a melodic tune Yaël Malgas The annual e’Bosch Heritage Awards celebrated locals from the greater Stellenbosch who brought a tune to the town and helped establish generations of musicians. The recipients of the 2026 edition of the awards sought to acknowledge the music teachers, choir masters and those who use music as a means of activism. The group were from various walks of life but they are driven by a shared responsibility and joint relationship to keep music alive in Stellenbsoch, said Dr Sias Mostert, director of e’Bosch Heritage Project. e’Bosch was born through a partnership between Stellenbosch University (SU), Stellenbosch Municipality, and the founders who strove to find a few people to retain and celebrate Stellenbosch’s diverse heritage. Prof Deresh Ramjugernath, SU rector and vice-chancellor, said heritage is not something merely inherited but also is actively preserved. “Music is one of the most powerful carriers of heritage. It can cross boundaries of language, age and background. And perhaps most importantly, it can bring people together who might otherwise have very little in common,” he said. “The musicians we have hon-

oured tonight have contributed to that living cultural heritage of Stellenbosch,” he said at the awards ceremony last Wednesday (23 September). ARRAY AWARDED In all 10 music awards were handed out. The recipients were Neil Keet, Patrick de Vries, David Taylor, Marthie Hauptfleisch, Mandy Skippers, Rochelle Adams, Heidi Sauls, Kevin and Glynnes Phillips, Wendy-Joy Crowley, and Danell Herbst-Muller. Keet, the Phillips, Crowely

and Sauls are among the local who have established and been at the helm school choirs. Taylor represented the Johnman Music School at the Johnman Garden Homes Music in the Stellenbosch CBD. The school, established by Dorothy and Charles Johnman in 1996, has helped to teach various musicians and provided performance opportunities for nearly 200 since the Covid pandemic. Hauptfleisch, a longtime e’Bosch collaborator, received her award in part for her use of music as education tool and

her activism. The nurse recently launch the first of her songs which aims to encourage young people priorities their sexual health. LEADERS STEP UP Along with the music makers the night also celebrated the group of participants who completed the e’Bosch leadership programme, which was facilitated by SU. “Leadership is not confined to position, title or public visability. Of course, we have more expectations of the people in

official positions. I’m grateful to say that while Stellenbosch has fantastic leadership positions, every one of us has something that our heart is crying about. And what our heart cries about is the one area where you can take action,” Mostert said. “That is what this Community Leadership Training course is all about, how to see, recognise what your heart is crying about, how to make the plan, how to imagine what is the miracle of what is needs to happen and end, but through hope, mobilise your compatriots to actually work together and with resilience to get to the end. “So we look forward to handing over these Community Leadership Certificates and we look forward to seeing what projects you are taking on.” Stellenbosch mayor Jeremy Fasser encouraged all attendees to continue honouring and preserving their heritage in big and small ways. “[Heritage] is about the stories our grandparents told us. It is about the languages we speak, the food we save, the traditions we preserve, the songs we sing and the memory that connects generations,” he said. “In a place like Stellenbosch, with its complex and diverse history, celebrating heritage must also mean creating opportunities for different communities to see themselves and each other as part of one shared story.”

Toyota Stellenbosch Woordfees 2026

ing Stars-program by die Jakes Gerwelstigting in Somerset-Oos ontwikkel. Foto: B-You Photography

All about braai at Sandringham Visit Stellenbosch is teaming up with the 2026 South Africa BBQ Festival as the official destination partner, welcoming a celebration of live-fire cooking to Sandringham Farm in Stellenbosch on Saturday 10 October. The festival will see more than 40 South African and international pitmasters share their distinctive techniques and fire-cooking traditions. From low-and-slow smoking and open-flame grilling to methods passed down through generations, the gathering pays homage to the many ways the world cooks with fire. “Stellenbosch has always been a place where people connect around the table,” said Annemie Liebenberg, CEO of Visit Stellenbosch. “The South Africa BBQ Festival extends that table into the open air and around the fire, inviting visitors to meet the makers, stay for the conversation and experience something unexpected. Whether it is a first taste, a new connection or a skill learned beside the flames, this is Stellenbosch as you may never have imagined it before.” For Visit Stellenbosch, the partnership reflects the destination’s positioning, “Unexpected Firsts. Unforgettable Moments", offering new and returning visitors a more considered way to experience Stellenbosch: slowly and intentionally, through the people and flavours that give the destination its distinct character. Festival founder Biggy Smallz will be joined by pitmasters and food personalities including Pete Goffe-Wood, Ashley DokterMosotho, Borries Bornman, Marvyn Buys of Smoked by Buys, Niel van Zyl, Richard Bosman, Nic van Wyk, Jay Maan of Mr

Burnley FC bursts onto regional scene Players of Burnley Football Club celebrating their 1-0 victory over CCK Legacy in the final of the 2026 SAFA Cape Winelands Hollywoodbets Men’s Regional League Nedbank Cup at Cloetesville Sports Ground on Sunday (27 September). The Jamestown club advanced to the final of the coveted competition following a 4-3 triumph against Real Stars at the same venue that same afternoon. Established in 2018, Burnley FC has grown from a community-driven club into a competitive force in Stellenbosch football. The club recently won the 2025-’26 Stellenbosch LFA Promotional League, finished third in the SAFA Cape Winelands Promotional League Playoffs and secured promotion to the Hollywoodbets Men’s Regional League for the 2026-’27 season. The latest cup triumph marks another significant milestone in the club’s rapid rise and is a testament to the hard work, determination and commitment of the players, coaching staff, management and supporters. As Burnley FC continues its journey in the regional league it invites local businesses, organisations and individuals interested in sponsorship or collaboration to come on board and support the team for the season ahead. Support will assist with transport, equipment and match-day costs, particularly for players travelling from surrounding rural communities. Potentional sponsors and collaborators can contact Jacquin Flandorp on 065 913 5349 or jacquin@sun.ac.za.

Fairtree boss Lourensford The endurance mountain-biking team of Fairtree DP World Cannondale once again delivered a commanding performance, this time at the Lourensford MTB Classic in Somerset West on Saturday 19 September. Seven riders were in action in the event, with three achieving top 10 finishes and one claiming sixth place overall. The MTB riders who saddled up for the ride were Luyanda Tobigunya, Ziandro Jordaan, Kusaselihle “Lihle” Ngidi, Kwazi Mbhamali, Ethan Michaels, Lwandile Tshandana and Winile Majavu. “Launched in 2004 and despite its tough routes, the Lourensford MTB Classic has always been a favourite on the Western Cape MTB calendar,” said team manager Chris Norton. “The Helderberg and Hottentots Holland Mountains form an L-shaped basin that is 12 km long and 600m high, creating the ideal mountain biking amphitheatre. The team love these trails

with their challenging climbs and amazing single-track descents.” Ngidi recorded a time of 2:25:47 and crossed the line in sixth place overall and fifth in his riding category, Ziandro Jordaan (2:27:31) placed seventh overall and sixth in his riding category and Tobigunya (2:27:51) placed eighth overall and first in his riding category. The rest of the team members also delivered good times and results: Mbhamali (2:32:32) finished 18th overall and 10th in the category; Michaels (2:35:2) finished 21st overall and 21st in the category; Tshandana (2:37:21) finished 13th overall and 24th in the category; and Majavu (4:02:21) finished 171st overall and fourth in the category. “The team is growing from strength to strength, and we look forward to some great team racing soon,” Norton added. “Thanks to our amazing sponsors for making these opportunities possible.” Some of the Fairtree DP World Cannondale riders who saddled up for the Lourensford MTB Classic on Saturday 19 September are (from left) Luyanda Tobigunya, Kwazi Mbhamali, Ziandro Jordaan and Ethan Michaels.

Dis weer tyd vir straatmyl Met sterk mededinging tel elke sekonde

D

Sy was ’n afdelingswenner by vanjaar se SA Landloopkampioenskap. Kontak Francois by 0833685948 of francois_fouche@hotmail.com vir navrae.
