FOTO: Lientjie Mentz

The Edenburg Regional Court in the Free State sentenced Thami Mhlotshane (47) to life imprisonment for sexual violation and brutal assault of his life partner (21). Mhlotshane was sentenced on Monday 24 August for crimes committed on 14 November last year. Mojalefa Senokoatsane, provincial spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), said the trial exposed harrowing details of extreme violence and degradation. He said Mhlotshane accused the victim of being unfaithful, resulting in a violent confrontation. He said the court concluded that the extreme violence employed, the abuse of trust and power, and the lasting trauma suffered by the complainant warranted the prescribed sentence of life imprisonment. The State, led by Prosecutor Leon Ehlers, argued that Mhlotshane abused the love, trust, and sense of protection inherent in a relationship.

aims Rouxville-lam die lekkerste Club to help all Sowat 3 000 gaste het Saterdag kom kyk wie se lam die lekkerste in die streek is.

Janri Brits van Winburg was derde in Bloemfontein se Lamb Champs.
The Lions Club International relaunched in Bloemfontein on 22 August. Being one of the oldest clubs in South Africa, the local club invited new members and have plans to expand its projects. Marianna Loubser, one of the new members, says the organisation is more than a club. “It is a global humanitarian movement of people who choose to serve. People who see a need and do something about it. People who believe that communities can be stronger, kinder and better when we stand together.” Amongst the projects they have planned, is a basic health clinic in business areas such as Hamilton. Along with Kingdome Vision, the Lion’s Bright Sight project will assist people with low vision. One of the projects they are excited about, is the Step-Up Space for young people who just entered employment. “To be part of Lions, you do not need to be wealthy. You just need a heart to serve and a willingness to make a difference. It is a place to build friendships and have a network of people who care. It is a place where positive change will make Bloemfontein a better place.” The local club president, Chris Groenewald, says they are very excited about new members joining the ranks. “What we need is positive people who are committed. We would love to be as active as years gone by.” Call Marianna on 082 494 2567 for more information.

Convicted fraudsters await their sentence TEBOHO SETENA The Bloemfontein Magistrates’ Court has reserved the sentencing of two individuals convicted of fraud and money laundering involving the auction of vehicles at the Government Garage in Bloemfontein. They are Jeanne Kellerman (55), former senior administrative clerk at the Government Garage, and Mohammed Cajee (40), director of the MNS Cars dealership. Their sentencing is scheduled for Tuesday 13 October. Their conviction on Monday 24 August was a result of an investigation by the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation team in Bloemfontein. WO Fikiswa Matoti, provincial spokesperson for the Hawks, said the fraud and money laundering matter amounts to R1 163 758 involving the auctioning of state vehicles. She confirmed that no money was recovered from the fraud scheme. “During 2023, several auctions were held at the Government Garage in Bloemfontein, where 18 vehicles were sold to Cajee for R1 163 758. He paid a deposit of R150 000 and was required to settle the outstanding balance in full before the garage could release the vehicles.” Kellerman, a former senior administrative clerk at the Government Garage, however, released the vehicles to his accomplice without the outstanding balance having

been settled in contravention of departmental policies. “He also made misrepresentations to the garage’s security official to facilitate the release of the vehicles,” said Matoti. She said further investigation revealed that Kellerman had received R10 000 in gratification from his accomplice. Matoti said that the matter was reported to the Hawks in Bloemfontein for investigation. “The court subsequently issued warrants of arrest for both accused. On 14 November 2023, Kellerman and Cajee handed themselves over to the Hawks’ investigating officer and were duly charged,” she said. Cajee was granted bail set at R10 000 and Kellerman’s bail was set at R3 000.

This followed a postponement on Monday. Dubbed the Wilgehof Triple Murder, it was initially set to continue with the presentation of victim impact statements, with State Prosecutor Advocate Lucky Bondes to lead the testimony while Judge Corné van Zyl would preside over the proceedings. Lt. Col Thabo Covane, provincial police spokesperson, confirmed the reason for the postponement was the unavailability of the attorney who represented the two accused when the trial started. He said the presiding judge, Judge Van Zyl, stated that in the interest of justice, the judgment process had to be moved to Wednesday. The accused are Mpheng Anna Ntsoeu, a former employee at the daycare centre, and her boyfriend, Katlego Ronald Moroe. They were arrested in August 2024 following intensive police investigations. The deceased are Betsie Kruger (66), owner of the centre; her daughter Janine Theron (35); and Janine’s husband, Christo Theron (36). Their bodies were discovered at the centre in Van Heerden Street, Wilgehof, on 29 June 2023. The killers’ modus operandi was to tie up and strangle the victims, the police investigation revealed. The sole survivor was the owner’s

91-year-old mother, who was inside the house but slept through the ordeal and was left unharmed. Both accused, Ntsoeu and Moroe face three counts of murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances and money laundering. While Ntsoe, the former employee of the daycare, denied being near the crime scene, police investigations revealed that cellular data presented during the trial placed both her and Moroe’s phone signals at a network tower closest to the daycare centre around the time of the murder. The retrieved cellphone data placed both accused’s cellphones near a network tower at the National Hospital. Read more on the trial by visiting bloemnewsexpress.co.za.

KILLER DEALT LIFE IMPRISONMENT TEBOHO SETENA The Bloemfontein Regional Court has sentenced Nkululeko Magwa (20) to life imprisonment for the fatal stabbing of Thabo Buti (24), following a four-day trial that ended on Thursday 27 August. This stemmed from a gang-related attack on the victim, who was stabbed to death on 11 October last year in Kagisanong, Bloemfontein. Mojalefa Senokoatsane, provincial spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) of South Africa, said the sentencing was based on evidence gathered by police, including a jogger’s account. The court heard that Buti had been fatally stabbed multiple times in the early hours while walking with a
female companion to hail a taxi. “Three men confronted them. Buti attempted to flee, but was chased and apprehended at a nearby street corner. When the assailants returned with him to the companion, he had already sustained stab wounds. The attackers forced both victims to kneel and ordered Buti to remove his shoes and pray. Before he could complete his prayer, Magwa stabbed him and Buti died at the scene,” said Senokoatsane. He said the state also led with evidence from a jogger who had witnessed the attack. The court heard that Buti’s mother and stepfather had suffered ill-health and struggled to process the murder. Their health deteriorated and both died earlier this year.

Municipalities ‘too failed to fail’
Bfn-skrywer hoop op plek in top vyf LIENTJIE MENTZ
PROF. JOSEPH SEKHAMPU South Africa has created a local government system in which some municipalities may have become too failed to fail. Voters can replace councillors and governing parties, but municipal debt, damaged infrastructure and weak revenue systems survive elections. When municipalities fail, their financial burdens do not disappear; these migrate to Eskom, National Treasury and other parts of state. Attempts to punish dysfunctional municipalities often hurt the residents who depend most heavily on essential services. South Africa’s weakest municipalities acquire a form of protection from the severity of their own failure. As financial distress deepens, its consequences spread beyond councillors and officials to residents, creditors and other parts of government, making intervention progressively more necessary. In ordinary markets, extreme weakness increases the probability that an institution will disappear, while in local government, it can increase the probability that its liabilities and responsibilities will migrate elsewhere. The National Treasury encountered a dilemma in July when it temporarily withheld equitable-share transfers from municipalities following persistent breaches of financial management rules. The intervention was intended to impose fiscal discipline, but Parliament warned that withholding the funds could jeopardise basic services, particularly for indigent households. By the end of the month, the remaining allocations to some municipalities had been released. This exposed the constraint at the heart of municipal enforcement: Once the costs of punishment migrate from the institution being disciplined to residents who depend on essential services, the pressure to restore funding becomes increasingly difficult to resist. Resilience built on transferring failure is not the same as eliminating it. If enough municipalities arrive at the edge together, their accumulated failures will eventually test the capacity of the institutions standing behind them to absorb the fall. South Africa has spent years pulling municipalities back from the cliff, but the institutions rescuing them may eventually lose their footing, too. – Sekhampu is chief director of the NorthWest University (NWU) Business School.

“Op 1 Januarie vanjaar was ek en my man op vakansie, toe ek weer daarna luister.

Art echoes women of Anglo-Boer War’s legacy LIENTJIE MENTZ A new temporary exhibition at the War Museum of the Boer Republics in Bloemfontein, titled Defiance, is taking a look at women and the role they played during the Anglo-Boer War. Dr Vicky Heunis, collections manager, says the exhibition reminds her that history is not only made on battlefields. “It is also made in homes, concentration camps, hospitals and communities – and often by people whose voices were not given the same prominence as those of the men who fought,” she believes. “We must remember the strong and courageous women
who form part of our history. We should honour their legacy.” She says the role of a museum is not only to preserve objects, but also to preserve voices and create avenues for new generations to engage with the past. A variety of artists’ work is on display. Included in this is Marie Antoinette Odendaal’s Twyfelhoek. It consists of a body of work along with a short film that reveals personal stories of her mother, on growing up on the farm Twyfelhoek near Vrede. Odendaal says in her artist statement that her mother would often return to memories and stories of the cave where women and children had hidden in fear of being taken to
one of the deadly concentration camps during the war. Stefan Rossouw’s Die Engelse Roos is a portrait of the humanitarian Emily Hobhouse. It tells something of the burden she carried due to turning against her homeland and sharing in the everyday hardships of suffering people. St Andrew’s Bloemfontein learner Siyabonga Gans’s Triptych – SA War and modern endemic gender-based violence was commissioned by the museum. It explores the impact and resilience of women within society. Many more exceptional works will be on display here until November.

vrolike inheemse tuin by die ingang.

Rush-hour crash: Taxi hits two bakkies TEBOHO SETENA A morning rush-hour crash involving a Toyota Quantum minibus taxi, two bakkies and a cyclist left one bakkie driver rushed to a Bloemfontein hospital for emergency medical treatment. The accident occurred on Wednesday at about 07:13 at the traffic lights at the intersection of Dr Becher and McGregor streets. Four individuals escaped unharmed. They were the male driver of the taxi, a female teacher at Mangaung Primary School who was driving a GWM bakkie, the driver of a Ford Ranger bakkie and a cyclist. The driver of a white Ford Ranger was
rushed to hospital for treatment to injuries he sustained. His bakkie’s airbag deployed following a collision with the taxi. The traffic lights were functioning at the time of the accident. “As soon as the crash happened, someone hurried to open the passenger door to steal my work laptop, instead of helping. The person vanished from the scene and this act just added to the trauma from the accident,” said the teacher. However, she said she was glad to be alive considering the impact of the accident that left her bakkie written off. Speeding is suspected to be the cause of the accident, evidenced by damage to all
three vehicles. The taxi’s driveshaft broke during the collision with the two bakkies. One of the eyewitnesses said the taxi then twisted and overturned, landing on its side in the middle of road. According to a witness, the taxi, heading eastbound, first crashed into the white Ford Ranger, which was heading northbound, and then ploughed into the driver's door of the GWM bakkie, which was heading south. A male cyclist was caught in the accident and had one of his wheels damaged beyond repair. Traffic flow was affected for a while following the accident.

ALL-WOMEN THRILLER BOXING BILL ON THE CARDS The Free State's golden boxing queen Matshediso Mokatsane (née Mokebisi) will be in action in Bloemfontein, attempting to settle the score against old rival Bukiwe "Anaconda" Nonina. Their bout headlines the all-women tournament to be staged in the Batho Community Hall on Saturday 5 September.
It is set to start at 14:00. They will face off for the Free State bantamweight title. Mokatsane and Nonina, from the Eastern Cape, will do battle for the fourth time. In two previous contests Nonina won by majority decision. The Kroonstad-born Mokatsane won by stopping Nonina in their meeting in 2016.

Netball supremacy on full display TEBOHO SETENA The five-time Varsity Netball champions, the University of the Free State (UFS), suffered their first defeat, while their local counterparts, the Central University of Technology (CUT), Free State, hunt their second win in Round 5 of the series at the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) Sport Hall on Sunday 6 September. The Kovsies lost narrowly (48 - 50) to their arch-rivals and defending champions, the North-West University (NWU) Eagles, in a fierce rematch of last year’s final at the Callie Human Centre on Monday 31 August. The UFS team were looking to avenge last year’s 49 - 57 loss to the Eagles in the final at the same venue. However, the visiting Eagles replicated their killer performance when they dethroned the Kovsies 57 - 49 — crushing the UFS’ prospects of a sixth title. The result left the Kovsies still in second place with 13 points, behind the undefeated
University of Johannesburg (UJ). The Gauteng side boasts 16 points at the top and looks to put the Kovsies to the sword in their upcoming match. Victory over the UJ would be perfect for coach Burta de Kock in Sunday’s fixture. The CUT fought gallantly to record their first-ever win, beating the Nelson Mandela University (NMU) Madibaz 41 - 36 in a match that was a must-win for both, given they were desperate to end their respective losing streaks. Led by Martha Mosoahle-Samm, the CUT now boasts five points and hope to consolidate their standing on the log in the remaining fixtures of the series. The competition is in its crucial phase, and powerhouses are tightening their grip as they target semifinal berths. Following the completion of round four of the series in Bloemfontein, favourites include the Eagles, last year’s runner-up the UFS, UJ and the University of Pretoria (UP-Tuks), as well as Wits.
Big cats facing off TEBOHO SETENA The Free State Cheetahs are gearing up for immediate redemption as they host the equally-determined Pumas in a supercharged Currie Cup Premier Division semifinal in Bloemfontein on Sunday 6 September. They will face off in the 45 000-capacity Toyota Stadium in what will be their second meeting in just seven days. The Cheetahs’ quest for redemption stems from a 52 - 26 loss to the Pumas in the final-round pool clash played in Mpumalanga. A masterclass in tactical nuance and technical insight awaits rugby supporters in this big cat showdown, in which both sides are expected to unleash their predatory instincts. The Cheetahs are counting on their home-ground advantage and a strong contingent of supporters expected
to pack out the stadium and serve as their “16th man”. It is a crucial fixture for head coaches Frans Steyn and Jimmy Stonehouse, with the victor going through to the final in South Africa’s prestigious rugby championship. Steyn and his camp face a massive psychological assignment to lift themselves after their biggest loss at the hands of these same Pumas who finished the match with 14 men after having a player red-carded. The Pumas will have their tails up after recording their win over the Free State lads. According to history, the Cheetahs have won 10 of their 20 total semifinal matches and reached 16 finals throughout their history. They have won the championship title seven times (including one shared title) and finished as runners-up nine times. Steyn will look to atone for the 5 - 25 loss in the semifinal to the 2025 Currie Cup winners – the Northern Cape’s Griquas.
