Roll up for clean-up Members of the community took part in a clean-up initiative in Happy Valley and on Reservoir Island, which now forms part of the Westdene Park. Life imprisonment for former worker TEBOHO SETENA The Wilgehof triple murder trial has ended with conviction and the handing down of three life sentences to Mpheng Anna Ntsoeu (30). Her co-accused and boyfriend, Katlego Ronald Moroe, was acquitted on all charges. Following the completion of the hearing in the Free State High Court, Judge Corné van Zyl found her guilty on three counts of murder, as well as robbery with aggravating circumstances, and money laundering. She was sentenced on Thursday 3 September. The case relates to the murder of Christo Theron (36), his wife, Janine
Theron (35), and Janine’s mother, Betsie Kruger (66), in June 2023. Their bodies were discovered at about 08:50 on 29 June at Kruger’s residence in Van Heerden Street, Wilgehof. The investigations revealed that the primary method used in the triple murder was binding and strangulation to incapacitate the victims before robbing the property. State prosecutor Adv. Lucky Bondes led the testimony, while Judge Corné van Zyl presided over the proceedings. “Ntsoeu was sentenced to three life sentences for murder, 15 years’ imprisonment for robbery with aggravating circumstances, and 10 years’ imprisonment for money laundering.

The sentences will run concurrently,” Capt. Loraine Earle, provincial spokesperson for the police, confirmed. Ntsoeu was employed at the Byenes Daycare Centre, owned by Kruger,
who had run it for 19 years before she was murdered along with her daughter and son-in-law. Jacques Wilson investigated the case, piecing the evidence together, leading to the arrests of Ntsoeu and Moroe in August 2024. “The case was handed over to Capt. Jaques Wilson in February 2024 as a cold case, with no clear leads pointing to the identity of the perpetrators,” said Earle. “Undeterred by the lack of leads, he embarked on an intensive investigation, meticulously revisiting information, following up on leads and piecing together evidence. After months of painstaking investigation, his persistence eventually paid off
when a breakthrough was made in August 2024, leading to the arrest of Ntsoeu and her boyfriend, Moroe, in connection with the three murders.” Lt. Gen. Thabang Lesia, Free State provincial police commissioner, commended Wilson and the investigating team for their meticulous and determined work, which culminated in the sentencing of a former employee. “This was a murder that shocked the Bloemfontein community and had a devastating impact on the families of the victims,” said Lesia. “While no court outcome can ever undo the pain and loss suffered, we hope that this sentence will bring some measure of closure to the families and all those affected.”

Gelei deur die rekonstruktiewe en plastiese chirurge drs Efraim van der Walt en Sashi Agrawal, saam met die narkotiseur dr. Louis van den Berg, is die operasies Saterdag 29 Augustus uitgevoer. Vanjaar het kinders tussen die ouderdomme van 7 en 12 jaar verskillende prosedures as deel van die inisiatief “Life for a Child: Because Every Child Deserves a Future” ondergaan. PJ de Bruin (13) van Bloemfontein het ’n operasie aan sy sagte verhemelte ondergaan. Hy het reeds op ’n jong ouderdom ’n operasie ondergaan waarop sy gesplete verhemelte herstel is, maar daar was steeds ’n klein gaatjie wat veral sy spraak aangetas het. Hy was Saterdag baie opgewonde oor die operasie en hoe dit sy lewensgehalte kan verbeter. Devin Moses van Hartswater (13) is gebore met gewebte vingers en hoewel hy reeds as jong seun ’n operasie gehad het om die vingers te skei, het veral die pinkie begin krom trek. Chirurge het Saterdag ’n operasie uitgevoer om die verkorting van die vinger te herstel. Vir hierdie kinders gaan chirurgie oor baie meer as net die regstelling van ’n fisieke toestand. Rekonstruktiewe prosedures is daarop gemik om funksie te verbeter, voorkoms te herstel, selfvertroue te bou en elke kind se algehele lewensgehalte te verbeter. Deur “Life for a Child” poog die Life Rosepark-hospitaal en sy spesialisvennote nie net om noodsaaklike chirurgiese sorg te verskaf nie, maar ook bewustheid te verhoog oor die belangrikheid van vroeë diagnose, verwysing en toegang tot rekonstruktiewe gesondheidsorgdienste. Die hospitaalbestuurder van Life Rosepark,

On Friday 4 September, close family and friends gathered at the Bayswater Village to celebrate the 100th birthday of Gloria Stocks, ahead of the big day on Sunday 6 September. Having lived in Bloemfontein for the past 62 years and in Bayswater Village since 2010, the celebration took place in the retirement community’s hall. Gloria was born in Pietermaritzburg. She had an older brother, Ray Wilson, who decided to emigrate to the United Kingdom (UK) after the Second World War reached its conclusion. Ray then moved and worked in America and Canada. During her school years, Gloria attended the Pietermaritzburg Girls’ High School where she matriculated. After school, she took courses in short hand and typing, and became a legal secretary at Lesley Smiths, a firm of attorneys. During this stage, she met Mervyn Stocks in Pietermaritzburg in 1948. The two got married in 1952. The couple moved between Pietermaritzburg and Cape Town for many years. Their sons, Michael and Barry, were born in Cape Town. Michael grew up to marry Dalene (nèè Border). This union resulted in daugters Caren and Lee-Ann, and son Marc.

Michael and Dalene now have seven grandchildren. Barry married Verle (nèè Usher), and the two then added daughter Tayla and son Dalton to their family. Gloria and Mervyn moved to Bloemfontein in 1964, after which Mervyn became the Master of the Supreme Court. The couple lived in Dan Pienaar for many years. Barry says his mom was involved in the women’s agricultural union and other charity organisasions. “She and her friends had a weekly
gym class at the Red Cross Hall where they not only got their share of exercise, but also very important ‘chin wagging’ or chatting.” Mervyn died in April 2016 at the ripe age of 93 years. Barry says his mom always had a great love for dogs and horses. “In her early years she wanted to be a vet, but she always said she would have become too involved with the animals.” At the party on Friday, Natalie Kotzé of New Beginnings brought some of their dogs to add to the cheer.

GUARD SUSPECTED OF RAIDING SAFE The police in Bloemfontein have launched a manhunt for a potential suspect regarding the theft of an undisclosed amount of money at a Navalsig store. The public is urged to assist in this case of theft, investigated by the Navalsig Police Station. Capt. Loraine Earle, provincial spokesperson for the police, said a suspect had disappeared following the incident which reportedly occurred on 31 August. She said a warrant of arrest has been issued. “It is alleged that the suspect gained access to the keys of the store’s safe and then used them to open the safe, from which thousands of rands in cash were stolen,” confirmed Earle.
She said according to information, the suspect was working as a security guard at the place of business. The police have identified an individual, Sboniso Nkabinde (28), as someone who might have information that could assist in the investigation. “Anyone who has information regarding his whereabouts, is requested to immediately notify the police,” said Earle. Anyone with information about Nkabinde’s whereabouts can contact the investigating officer, Const. Kyle Thomas, on 082 236 0609 at the Navalsig Detective Services. Alternatively, information can be reported anonymously to Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or via the My SAPS app.

She said the remains will be subjected to the necessary forensic processes to establish the identity of the victim. “The cause of the fire also remains under investigation, and relevant law-enforcement agencies will continue with their respective investigations,” said Earle. Shops in the affected building and those adjacent were forced to close for five days while the authorities, including the police, remain on site as part of the investigation. The fire destroyed some shops operating from the privately owned building while others suffered partial smoke damage. Some informal traders said they also lost their stock to the fire.
The Bloemfontein police have uncovered human remains under the rubble of the fire-gutted commercial building known as Marabastad in St Andrews Street in Bloemfontein’s CBD. This followed an ongoing investigation into the devastating structural fire that occurred on 23 August at about 03:49. Capt. Loraine Earle, spokesperson for the Free State police, confirmed the grim discovery following further investigation by WO Swannie Swanepoel, a search and rescue dog handler, and his four-year-old Belgian Shepherd, Parco. Convicted serial burglar George Maxwell Dundee (60), with a 40-year crime spree, faces more charges in pending cases ongoing in court. He is serving a 20year prison term following sentencing by the Bloemfontein Regional Court on 21 August. Tyd ál meer, Tafel gedek vir dié wat uitsien na Sooibrand maar minder IGNO VAN NIEKERK “So, hoeveel tyd spaar jy per dag vandat jy KI gebruik?” Die kursusgangers kyk my wantrouig aan. Uiteindelik antwoord die eerste een: “twee ure”. Nog iemand noem selfs meer. Ander minder. “En wat doen julle met die tyd wat KI julle spaar?” Die wantroue terug in hul oë. Verstaanbaar. In hierdie tye van KI, ekonomiese uitdagings en werkloosheid wil niemand die verkeerde ding sê nie. Dis moeilik. As jy nie bybly met die tegnologie nie, raak jy vinnig irrelevant. As jy bybly, werk jy vinniger; jy mag nie huis toe gaan wanneer jy klaar is nie, want die werksure is van 08:00 tot 16:30. Die wêreld van werk is nie gereed vir die verandering waarbinne ons onsself bevind nie. Namate tegnologie versnel, word meer “inligting” geskep wat weer verwerk moet word. In baie werksplekke kan niks meer gebeur as mense nie rekenaars het nie. Verbeel jou ’n skermvrye Woensdag in ’n ondersteuningspersoneellid se week. Ondenkbaar. Maar wat as KI die hele dag se werk kan doen? Hoe gaan Generasie Z se werk en werkplekke lyk? Wat moet kinders leer in ’n wêreld wat huiwer tussen realiteit en virtuele realiteit, ware nuus en vals nuus, egte vriendskap en bedrieglike aanlyn verhoudings, superintelligensie en menslike vernuf? KI neem oor. Wêreldwyd word geargumenteer dat sekere poste vir regte mense reserveer moet word (regstellende aksie, dus, vir mense in ’n wêreld van masjiene). Dan, die ander kant van die munt. KI wat help om dinge op X-strale te sien wat die menslike oog kan miskyk; robotiese operasies wat met presisie uitgevoer kan word; blitsige berekeninge in die oplossing van komplekse probleme; kitsresepte na aanleiding van ’n foto van jou yskas; inligting oor restaurante in jou omgewing (en wanneer hulle besig is). En gespaarde tyd. Tyd wat ons mors omdat ons nie weet wat om daarmee te maak nie. Moet ons besig lyk? Moet ons selfontwikkeling doen? Wat leer ’n mens as jy nie weet wat die volgende stap in die KI-opmars gaan wees nie? Moet ons met base onderhandel om eerder uitkomsgebaseer of tydsgebaseerd te werk? En terwyl werkers hieroor wonder, is daar iewers ’n baas wat KI vra wat hy of sy moet doen om hul werkers, wat alles vinniger gedoen kry, besig te hou. En tyd, ons mees kosbare kommoditeit, gaan verlore.

Kunstefees soek nuwe stories en stemme Die verhoë staan nog leeg, die ligte is af en feesgangers geniet steeds die herinneringe van die afgelope Vrystaat Kunstefees. Agter die skerms draai die wiele egter reeds, want die pad na die 2027-kunstefees word aangepak. Die aansoekproses vir die hooffees en Vrynge het al geopen en die geleentheid hiervoor duur nog tot 27 November. Die hooffees sluit teater- en musiekproduksies in, terwyl Vrynge ’n platform aan ontluikende kunstenaars bied wat gereed is om hul eerste tree op die professionele verhoog te gee. Feesdirekteur Michael Garbett sê die aansoek- en keuringsproses is een van die opwindendste dele van die fees.
“Die gehalte van die produksies op die afgelope fees het gewys hoe sterk die fees groei. Die peil is hoog, en ons sien uit daarna om te sien wat vanjaar se aansoeke bring. “Kom wees oop. Kom ervaar. Bring jou idees, jou stories, jou stem en jou verbeelding,” nooi Garbett. “Die Kunstefees is ’n plek waar nuwe idees ruimte kry en waar kunstenaars en gehore mekaar kan ontmoet. “Ons wil weet wat jou opgewonde maak en watter stories jy graag met die Vrystaat wil deel.” Die aansoekproses wat betref die kunsmark sal binnekort open. Kunstenaars, ontwerpers en entrepreneurs word aangemoedig om die fees se sosiale media dop te hou vir
die aankondiging hieroor. Aansoek kan reeds vir betrokkenheid by die literatuurfees gedoen word, en dié proses sluit eers aan die einde van Januarie 2027. Afdelings sluit in: boekbesprekings, kinderaktiwiteite, paneelbesprekings, poësievoorlesings, akademiese gesprekke, meesterklasse, werksessies en kosdemonstrasies. Wanneer die aansoekproses vir die hooffees sluit, begin die keuringsproses. Daarna neem die program stadig maar seker vorm aan. WENNERS OP STOEIMAT Stoeiers van die Sand du Plessis-amateurstoeiklub in Bloemfontein het op 29 Augustus op die Vrystaatse Stoeifederasie (FSWA) se kampioenskapsbyeenkoms in Bothaville 32 medaljes verwerf. Altesaam 119 stoeiers van oor die Vrystaat heen het na Bothaville gereis om in die jaarlikse kampioenskap mee te ding. Die 18 stoeiers van die Sand du Plessis-klub wat deelgeneem het, het 11 goue, 13 silwer- en 8 bronsmedaljes gewen. Hulle het hulle almal goed van hul taak gekwyt en elk in hul onderskeie afdelings uitgeblink. Danksy hul goeie deelname is 17 lede van die Sand du Plessis-klub op die byeenkoms in die Vrystaat-stoeispan ingesluit. Dié span gaan van 1 tot 3 Oktober aan die Suid-Afrikaanse stoeikampioenskapsbyeenkoms in Kaapstad deelneem.

Die groot wenner van die Wesgrow Sentrale Skole Sportreeks wat die afgelope seisoen tussen agt skole in die Vrystaat en Noord-Kaap plaasgevind het, is elke kind wat deelgeneem het. Gys Coetzee, uitvoerende direkteur van die Wesgrow-reeks, sê die peil van die kompetisie in die reeks verhoog elke jaar. “Dit is ’n vriendskaplike reeks tussen agt skole wat die afgelope paar jaar toenemend mededingend geraak het,” sê Coetzee. “Die reeks versterk skole
verder in hul deelname aan plaaslike ligas.” Die wenners van vanjaar se Wesgrow-reeks is op Maandag 7 September in Bloemfontein aangekondig. Die agt skole wat deelneem, is: die Hoërskool Diamantveld in Kimberley; Goudveld-Hoërskool in Welkom; Hoërskool Witteberg en Bethlehem Voortrekker Hoërskool in Bethlehem; Hoërskool Trio in Kroonstad; en die Hoërskool Fichardtpark, Hoërskool Jim Fouché

Suid-Afrika se paaie afgelê. “Agter daardie kilometers sit busse vol jongmense: rugbyspelers, hokkiespelers, netbalspelers. Van ons jongste ouderdomsgroepe tot ons eerste spanne. By ’n volledige interskole-byeenkoms kan maklik rondom 540 leerders van een skool betrokke wees.” Louwies het sy dank uitgespreek teenoor ouers wat hul kinders in die vroeë oggende by die skole moes hê. “Wanneer ’n ouer op ’n Saterdagoggend sy of haar kind by ’n skool aflaai, gebeur daar eintlik iets baie belangriks. Daardie ouer sê sonder woorde: ‘Ek vertrou julle met iets wat vir
my kosbaarder as enigiets anders is.’ “Dit is ’n groot verantwoordelikheid. Daarom sê ek vanaand dankie aan elke afrigter, spanbestuurder, onderwyser, noodhulpwerker, bestuurder en personeellid wat daardie verantwoordelikheid ernstig opgeneem het.” Charles Liversage, skoolhoof van Sentraal, het die borge bedank wat soveel vertroue in die reeks gestel het en uiteindelik so ’n reeks moontlik gemaak het. In besonder het hy Wesgrow, die VKB-groep, Skilltracer, die Universiteit van die Vrystaat (UV) en Novus Media Gemeenskapsnuus (waaronder NoordKaapBulletin, Vista, VrystaatKroon en BloemNuusExpress) bedank. Die gemeenskapskoerante het die media-dekking vir die reeks behartig. Vanjaar se wenner van die seunshokkie, sowel as die algehele wenner van die hokkie, was Jim Fouché. Voortrekker het in die meisieshokkie gewen. Jim Fouché en Sentraal deel die netbalbeker. Diamantveld se goeie vertonings deur rugbyspanne het aan dié skool die algehele rugbytitel besorg.

Grit paves future path TEBOHO SETENA The Varsity Netball tournament is headed for a crucial phase with powerhouses tightening their grip as they target semifinal berths set for 21 September.

On the home front, the University of the Free State (UFS) is under immense pressure to secure a top-four slot while the Central University of Technology (CUT), Free State, continue the fight to retain their status in the competition. The Kovsies find themselves under pressure following backto-back losses to the undefeated University of Johannesburg (UJ) and the North-West University (NWU) Eagles. The UFS is currently in fourth position on the log with 13 points, with the additional pressure of retaining their reputation as five-time champions. A semifinal slot would bring the UFS a step closer in their quest to win a sixth title and become the most successful of the top-seeded eight
teams in the country’s premier university competition. A sixth title for the Kovsies would be the perfect send-off for their longest-serving and respected South African and international coach, Burta de Kock. She achieved the milestone of reaching her sixth final with the team last year and guided the team to five tournament titles, in: 2013, 2014, 2018, 2021 and 2024. The Kovsies aim for victories in their two crucial upcoming matches, against the Nelson Mandela University (NMU) and a derby against the CUT on 13 and 14 September, respectively. Favourites to reach the semifinal include table-toppers UJ, with 20 points, the Eagles in second place (16 points) and the University of Pretoria (UP-Tuks) in third position (14 points). The Martha Mosoahle-Samm-led CUT secured a first win after beating Madibaz 41 – 36 in round four of the competition.
