Giraffe rescue remarkable
A giraffe initially given little chance of survival due to a severe leg injury is recovering well after surgery was performed under extraordinary circumstances to save the young animal.
This followed a carefully coordinated wildlife rescue mission, bringing together experts from across the globe to ensure the animal’s survival. Staff of the University of the Free State (UFS), along with a team of American veterinarians reseaching giraffe hoof health, did the groundbreaking work on a farm between Dealesville and Boshof.
The giraffe, named Oscar, is now walking with his herd just one week after undergoing the surgery.
Prof. Francois Deacon of the Department of Animal Sciences at the UFS, says the operation – which took place on 19 February – was performed on a remote game farm.
The farm owner noticed the giraffe limping, and suspected a broken leg. He contacted Dr Andri Grobbelaar, a UFS PhD graduate specialising in giraffe healthcare and welfare.
The timing was fortunate, as a team of American veterinarians researching giraffe hoof health was visiting the UFS, making them the perfect addition to the rescue effort.
Deacon says various scientists doing research on giraffes regularly visit the UFS.
Rescuing a wild giraffe is no small feat, especially in a remote location.
While the exact cause of the injury remains unclear, Deacon speculates that the rough terrain may have played a role.
“The farm has rocky outcrops and uneven surfaces, so it’s possible the giraffe’s leg got caught between rocks, or it stepped into a warthog hole, leading to the fracture.”
Immobilising the animal safely required refined capture techniques, and a team of five experienced wildlife veterinarians, including experts who had previously published research on giraffe capture techniques, worked together.
“The terrain made it difficult to get close enough to dart the giraffe, and once immobilised, we had to act quickly,” says Deacon.

then stabilised the leg using surgical stainless-steel pins and reinforced it with a thick splint, supported by PVC pipes.
Deacon says the procedure posed a unique challenge, as there were no existing references for splinting a giraffe’s leg in such a condition. To monitor the giraffe’s progress with minimal disturbance, the team utilised drone technology.
American veterinarians Dr Liza Dadone and Dr Steve Foxforth –both experts in giraffe care from international zoo environments –were instrumental in administering antibiotics and advising on hoof care.
One week post-surgery, the giraffe is thriving, defying expectations. The game farm owner and farm staff report that he is walking with the herd and keeping pace with the others – an encouraging sign.
Animal Hospital led the surgical procedure, using his extensive experience in treating giraffes.
“Time was critical, as prolonged immobilisation could lead to severe health complications,” he adds.
Upon closer examination, the team confirmed the giraffe’s leg was severely damaged. The lower leg was loose and broken, posing a risk that bones could pierce the skin. Under sedation and local anaesthesia, the veterinarians cleaned the wound and removed the bone fragments. They
“Over the next six to eight weeks, we will continue to monitor his condition. If healing progresses as expected, the splint will be removed, and he could have up to a 50% chance of making a full recovery,” says Deacon.
The giraffe’s young age and relatively low body weight are working in his favour, giving hope that he may one day return to full health – an extraordinary outcome made possible by global collaboration, expert intervention, and a commitment to wildlife conservation.

Vullis: Regsbrief oorhandig

Met vullisverwydering wat die afgelope tyd weer erg sporadies geword het, het AfriForum Dinsdag 4 Maart ’n regsbrief aan die Mangaung-metro oorhandig om die metro te dwing om 700 inwoners van die metro se diensgeld vir vullisverwydering op te skort.
Lambert de Klerk, AfriForum se bestuurder vir omgewingsake sê die metro kan nou geen ander rede buiten sy eie onwilligheid aanvoer waarom 700 huishoudings nie van die maandelikse munisipale vullisverwyderingstarief kwytgeskel kan word nie.
AfriForum het die regsbrief met die aansoeke om kwytskelding van 700 Bloemfonteiners by die munisipale kantoor op die munisipale bestuurder, Sello More, beteken. Die burgerregteorganisasie het reeds in Januarie vanjaar ’n skrywe aan dié metro gerig om die kwytskeldingsaansoeke – waarvoor die metro se eie munisipale regulasies voorsienning maak – te finaliseer. Tot dusver kon die metro as deel van sy vertragingstaktiek steeds nie uitsluitsel hieroor gee nie.
“Die huishoudings wat kwytskelding van die munisipale vullisverwyderingstarief versoek, betaal reeds maandeliks privaatvullisverwyderingsdienste om hierdie diens te lewer aangesien die Mangaung-metro se geskiedenis van dienslewering alles behalwe rooskleurig is,” sê hy.

hare gekloof word oor wat presies versoek word en hoeveel huishoudings die kwytskelding aanvra nie.
“Ons wil weet of die aansoeke goedgekeur is of nie en as dit afgekeur is wil ons weet waarom. In plaas daarvan om vir ons ’n antwoord te gee, gebruik die munisipaliteit allerhande vertragingstaktieke om steeds inwoners se vullisverwyderingstarief te verhaal vir ’n diens wat privaatvullisverwyderingsdienste nou lewer. Inwoners het die reg om self te besluit by wie hulle betroubare dienslewering wil kry en mag nie deur ’n munisipaliteit gedikteer word om van hul onvolhoubare dienste gebruik te maak nie,” sê De Klerk.
Christo Groenewald, AfriForum se distrikskoördineerder van Bloemfontein, sê die situasie toon duidelik dat die Mangaung-metro en sy leierskap geen waarde ag aan
versoeke vanaf die gemeenskap nie, wat lei tot inwoners wat steeds vir ’n diens moet betaal selfs al word daar geen dienste gelewer nie. “In sommige gevalle word lede selfs gedwing om dubbele koste aan te gaan om hul vullis verwyder te kry,” sê Groenewald.
Talle meenthuiskomplekse is slagoffers van die Mangaung-metro se swak dienslewering. By komplekse waar daar nie van ’n privaatkontrakteur gebruik gemaak word nie, staan honderde vullissakke opmekaar gestapel weens die metro se onvermoë om die vullis gereeld en volgens skedule te verwyder. Dit veroorsaak groot frustrasies by die inwoners aangesien informele rommelversamelaars die sakke oopskeur en dan net so los wat dan siektedraende peste, soos rotte en selfs slange, lok. “Dit skep ’n gevaarlike situasie, wat die gesondheid van inwoners bedreig asook die veiligheid van die gemeenskap in gedrang bring,” voeg Groenewald by.
“Ons sal nie opgee totdat geregtigheid geskied en mense kry waarvoor hulle betaal nie. Ons sal voortgaan om ons lede te ondersteun in die geveg teen swak dienslewering en is bereid om hof toe te gaan indien nodig,” sê Jaco Grobbelaar, AfriForum se streekhoof vir die sentraalstreek. “Vullisverwydering is al vir jare ’n probleem in Bloemfontein en omliggende gebiede weens die munisipaliteit se swak bestuur.” AfriForum lewer ’n vullisverwyderingsdiens aan huishoudings in Bloemfontein. Vroeg in Februarie het AfriForum sy nuwe oranje vullisverwyderingsvragmotor ingespan om sowat 20 ton vullis te verwyder.

“Die Mangaung-metro het begin om bome en takke te verwyder. ’n Kontrakteur het die gebied besigtig en sal die heining oprig sodra die gedeelte skoongemaak is,” sê hy.
Verlede jaar is ’n opruimingsprojek begin en onwettige skuilplekke, en rommel wat daar rondom opgehoop het, is met die bekendstelling van die Westdenepark-bewarea verwyder. Mense het egter reeds weer hul intrek hier geneem. Die Mangaung-

metropolisie en polisie het onwettige inwoners verwyder en Deutschmann sê hulle glo die heining sal ’n einde hieraan bring. Hy sê die enigste manier om die probleem te bekamp, is om die hele park, wat onder Mangaung Parke se Adopt-a-Park-program deur die Westdene-woonbuurtvereniging aangeneem is, te omhein en toegangsbeheer toe te pas. WATER SAFETY STRESSED
The Free State SAPS Diving unit, in collaboration with Mangaung Fire and Rescue, conducted a cleanup operation of the waters of the Loch Logan Waterfront at the Bloemfontein Rose Garden on 25 February. This initiative, spearheaded by the Bloemfontein SAPS Diving unit, aimed to remove debris and potential hazards from the water. The operation reflects the SAPS’s commitment to public safety.
During the cleanup, members of the Provincial Social Crime Prevention unit engaged with shoppers at Loch Logan, distributing pamphlets and educating the public on essential safety measures around bodies of water. This outreach was to raise awareness and promote responsible behavior.
The SAPS Diving Unit intends to continue this project and is seeking partnerships with other stakeholders to ensure the sustained cleanliness and safety of the area. By fostering collaboration and community involvement, the SAPS aims to create a safer environment for all.
Sgt Mahlomola Kareli said the SAPS encouraged the public to remain vigilant and adhere to water safety guidelines. Community members are also urged to report suspicious activities or potential hazards.

’n Replika van Tierpoort (destyds Riversford) se agthoekige blokhuise wat uit die Anglo-Boereoorlog dateer, word binnekort by die Oorlogsmuseum in Bloemfontein opgerig.
Tokkie Pretorius, kurator van die Oorlogsmuseum in Bloemfontein, sê toe hy die oorspronklike blokhuis by Tierpoort buite die stad sien, het hy besef dat so ’n voorbeeld van hierdie unieke strukture op die perseel van die museum tuishoort.
“Ná deeglike ondersoek deur die museum was dit duidelik dat dit logisties nie moontlik is en histories nie aanvaarbaar sal wees om die blokhuis na die museum te verskuif nie,” sê Pretorius.
“Daar is besluit op om ’n
replika van die blokhuis by die museum op te rig.”
Afmetings is in November geneem en tekenaar Hennie van Zyl is aangestel om die planne op te trek. Die planne gaan gebruik word om die drieverdiepingblokhuis op die terrein naby die Rice-blokhuis en die trein en stasie op te rig.
“Die grondverdieping van die blokhuis gaan as ’n klein vergaderlokaal ingerig word,” verduidelik Pretorius. “Ons het al lankal in gedagte om

Suretha van Heerden, mede-eienaar van Villa Avianto – waar ’n Franse atmosfeer met musiek, dekor en selfs van die uitstallers se klere geskep word – se Vespa het onlangs ook ’n verjongingskuur ondergaan.
Steve Oosthuizen het ’n groot passie vir die Vespa en restoureer dié bromponies gereeld.
Hy vertel die Vespa is in 1946 deur Piaggio gemaak. Die oorspronklike Vespa’s is gemaak van vliegtuigonderdele van Mussolini se vliegtuie.
Die Vespa is so genoem omdat die handvatsels en klank baie herinner aan die gebrom van ’n perdeby –“vespa” in Italiaans. Net 11 jaar nadat Piaggio begin het om die Vespa te maak, is ’n miljoen van dié bromponies reeds verkoop; dit het gelei tot ’n groot bromponiekultuur in Europa en ook in SuidAfrika in die jare 1950.

Ouers kan gerus die kinders en troeteldiere saambring vir die oggend. Daar is ’n springkasteel, ’n balput en ’n glip-en-gly waar oppassers na die kinders omsien. ’n Spesiale ruimte is
’n lokaal in te rig waar klein groepe kan vergader. Die blokhuis gaan die perfekte geleentheid hiervoor bied.” Hy sê die ander twee verdiepings gaan wys hoe die blokhuis binne lyk en ook uitstallings huisves van die blokhuisstelsel wat die Britse magte tydens die oorlog gevestig het.
Dr. Johan van Zÿl, hoofvakkundige by die museum, sê ’n skenking is ontvang wat gaan help met die oprigting en inrigting van die blokhuis. Van Zÿl verduidelik dat daar net ses agthoekige blokhuise gebou is, waarvan vyf in die Vrystaat. Hulle is in Februarie 1901 deur die Koninklike ingenieurs by sleutelposisies in die Oranjerivierkolonie opgerig om brûe oor riviere te beskerm. Van die ander agthoekige blokhuise is
opgerig by Norvalspont, Bethulie, en die spoorlynbrug oor die Rietrivier. Die blokhuis by Riversford (Tierpoort) is gebou om die treinspoor na Bloemfontein hier te beskerm.
Die Tierpoort-blokhuis is in 1999 net voor die 100-jarige herdenking van die AngloBoereoorlog deur wyle prof. Stef Potgtieter en die Vriende van die Oorlogsmuseum gerestoureer, maar die konstruksie het intussen weer erg verweer.

Die netbalbane by die Hoërskool Fichardtpark is na ’n Protea-speler en oudhoofmeisie van dié skool, Ané Retief, genoem. Die netbalbane by die Hoërskool Fichardtpark in Bloemfontein is onlangs verbeter, en daarmee saam is besluit om die bane na ’n oudleerling en lid van die Protea-netbalspan, Ané Retief, te noem.
Protea-netbalspeler Karla Pretorius, afrigter by Fichardtpark, sê verbeterings is by die nege bane op die skool se sportterrein aangebring.
“Heelwat verbeterings is aan die bane en op die terrein om die bane aangebring – soos nuwe plaveisel en die inrig van die klubhuis, sowel as paviljoene by die bane,” sê Pretorius.
“Met die borgskap van Spar kon ons werklik woeker om die geriewe te verbeter. Dit wys Spar se bydrae tot vrouesport strek nie net tot op nasionale vlak nie, maar ook tot op skoolvlak.”
Pretorius sê die inrig van die bane is ’n wonderlike aanwins vir die skool, maar ook vir die gemeenskap van die Vrystaat wat van die bane gebruik maak.
Die bane is na Retief genoem, wat van 2012 tot 2016 hier op skool was. Sy was in 2016 hoofmeisie. Retief het haar hele hoërskoolloopbaan netbal gespeel, en sy het van 2014 tot in matriek vir die eerste span uitgedraf.
Ná skool was sy van 2018 tot 2020 ’n netbalafrigter by Fichardtpark. Sy speel sedert

2017 vir die Vrystaat Crinums en sedert verlede jaar vir die Proteas. Sy is ook ’n afrigter by Eunice High School.
