Both the illicit cigarettes and the truck were confiscated by the police The driver will appear in the Bloemfontein court soon

The University of the Free State (UFS) announced that plans to establish a new veterinary science programme, which is set to become the second of its kind in South Africa, are at an advanced stage
The chief objective is to increase the number of veterinary scientists in the country
The university’s plans have been bolstered upon receiving in-principle approval from the Department of Agriculture (DoA); the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET); and its minister, and the South African Veterinary Council (SAVC)
This initiative includes the development of a professionally accredited Bachelor of Veterinary Science (BVSc) degree and a state-of-the-art veterinary teaching hospital on the South Campus in Bloemfontein
According to Prof Johan van Niekerk, vice-dean of Agriculture in the Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences, the programme will leverage the university’s Paradys Experimental Farm
“The campus provides an ideal environment for practical veterinary training The farm’s real-world livestock systems will offer students invaluable experiential learning opportunities in animal care, disease management and sustainable agricul-
ture,” said Van Niekerk
Prof Hester Klopper, vice-chancellor and principal of the UFS, highlighted the importance of this development, noting that it would position the university as a key contributor to veterinary science education in South Africa
“The establishment of a veterinary science programme at the UFS reflects our commitment to transdisciplinary research and addressing national priorities through innovation in higher education,” stated Klopper “This initiative not only strengthens our role in advancing food security,
animal health, and sustainable agriculture, but aso positions the UFS as a pivotal contributor to the continent’s development goals in these critical sectors”
South Africa’s shortage of veterinary scientists poses a risk to food security, animal welfare, public health and agricultural productivity, proven in a report by the Western Cape government in February 2023 The report revealed the country only has 60 to 70 veterinarians per million people far below the international norm of 200 to 400 per million This underscores the urgency of
expanding veterinary education and training opportunities
“This initiative directly addresses a national priority while aligning with continental and global aspirations towards sustainable development especially in the areas of modern agriculture, food security, and environmental sustainability,” confirmed Dr Nalize Scheepers of the Department of Sustainable Food Systems and Development
The UFS’ management stated it has been exploring the feasibility of this programme for the past five years, which involved consultations with
various stakeholders in the higher education and veterinary sectors
“As a public higher education institution, we are subject to national regulation and will confirm commencement dates once final approval and accreditation of the qualification are secured,” said Scheepers The veterinary academic hospital being planned for the UFS South Campus is expected to add extensive value to the broader community “The facility will feature clinical training facilities providing students with supervised, hands-on experience in animal diagnosis, surgery and treatment; public veterinary services offering essential care to local farmers, livestock owners and pet owners in the surrounding communities; and research support enabling applied research in critical areas such as animal health, epidemiology, and public health,” said Van Niekerk “The hospital will address the urgent shortage of veterinary services in the region and contribute to the province’s animal health and food security goals”
Van Niekerk said initially, the BVSc degree would be offered within the Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences, with plans to establish a dedicated School of Veterinary Science as the programme develops The initiative also supports the UFS One Health Initiative, creating opportunities for research and development
The Electoral Commission (IEC) announced it was forging ahead for the 2026 local government elections, benchmarking on progress made during the 2024 national and provincial elections (NPE)
The Election Report provides a full assessment of the Commission's work, successes, challenges and the circumstances under which the 2024 elections were held The report was tabled on 15 July to the National Assembly, as represented by the Portfolio Committee on Home
Affairs
Mosotho Moepya, chairperson of the IEC, stated that while no election is perfect, the elections for 2024 were ultimately free and fair
“The 2024 NPE was by far the most highly contested of South Africa's elections, with an overall 70 political parties, 11 of which were independent candidates, and 52 national parties
To put this into perspective, 14 886 candidates were vying for 887 seats in the national and provincial legislatures,” said Moepya
Strides made by the IEC during the past local government elections include the following:
■ Successfully added 1,2 million citizens to the voters' roll, bringing the total of registered voters to a historic 27,7 million citizens for the first time
■ Increased the number of voting stations and points of service to 23 300, thus reducing the average number of voters per district from 1 900 to 916
■ Implemented at short notice a revised electoral system facilitating the participation of independent persons
for the first time as candidates in national and provincial elections
■ Eliminated attempts at so-called double-voting This was because of the amendment effected by Parliament in 2021, to make voting outside the voting district at which a voter is registered, only available on pre-notification (Section 24A voting)
■ Ultimately, enabled the electoral participation of 16,2 million registered voters in NPE 2024, resulting in a voter turnout of 58,6%, a decrease from 65,99% in 2019, and 73,48% in 2014
Moepya stated that having 70 political parties, 11 independent candidates, and 52 national parties presented challenge to the commission
“Such heightened contestation brought challenges of its own, such as attacks on the commission, coupled with misinformation and disinformation campaigns aimed at tarnishing the image of the organisation
“The commission and some of its staff were targeted in cyberattacks and harassment on social media,” said Moepya

The University of the Free State (UFS) collaborated with partners committed to six robotic procedures as part of their Mandela Day Project
Prof Anthea Rhoda, deputy vice-chancellor Academic, said the UFS is committed to using its knowledge and resources to build a more just, sustainable, and humane society
The project that was an initiative between the UFS, the Free State Department of Health, African Synergy Health (ASH), CMR Surgical, and Marcus Medical launched and used Nelson Mandela’s iconic prison number 46664 This entailed four surgeons performing six robotic procedures on six patients, over six days, across four specialities It came to an end on Monday, 28 July
The initiative forms part of the larger Mandela Week Surgical Marathon hosted by ASH, a registered not-forprofit, public benefit organisation established to alleviate surgical backlogs in the public sector and other African hospitals It showcases the unique multidisciplinary robotic surgery capabilities located in the Universitas Academic Hospital in Bloemfontein
The surgeries was performed in urology, hepato-pancreato-biliary, colorectal, and upper gastrointestinal and general surgery
The surgical team taking part in this initiative included Dr Rebecca Fourie, head of the UFS’ Department of Surgery, Dr Frederik Claassen, academic head of the Department of Urology,
Dr Willem Dahms, senior lecturer and medical specialist in the UFS’ Department of Urology, and Prof Colin Noel, associate professor in the Department of Surgery
“We believe that this initiative we are sharing with you today speaks directly to a growing societal dilemma Robotic surgery is transforming modern healthcare and in the hands of our skilled surgeons enables precision, flexibility, and control beyond what was previously humanly possible,” said Rhoda at the launch on Wednesday, 23 July
According to her, robotic surgery has become a powerful tool to address health inequity, empower the public healthcare system, and put healing, dignity, and justice in the hands of
Some members of the surgical team are, from the left,Prof Frederik Claassen (academic head of the Department of Urology), Dr Rebecca Fourie (academic head of the Department of General Surgery, both of the University of the Free State),Napho Mokake (professional nurse at the Universitas Academic Hospital Theatre),Hangiwe Ngeno (operational manager at the Universitas Academic Hospital theatre),Atang Moahloli (enrolled nurse at the Universitas Academic Hospital theatre),Mami Matsoso (auxiliary nursing assistant at the Universitas Academic Hospital theatre),Natasha Geyser (clinical application specialist in Robotic Surgery at Marcus Medical) and Dr Willem Dahms (senior lecturer and medical specialist in the UFS’Department of Urology) Photos: Supplied
those who need it most
The chief executive officer (CEO) of the Univeritas hospital, Dr Balekile Mzangwa, said at the launch the surgeries represent a beacon of hope - a light for those whose lives will be transformed thanks to the generous partnerships that have been formed for this initiative "This initiative exemplifies the incredible power of collaboration At the Universitas Academic Hospital, we firmly believe that real progress
in healthcare comes from working together not just within the walls of our hospital, but across sectors, organisations, and communities The success of this project is a direct result of the unwavering commitment, expertise, and generosity of our partners, ” he said Dr Viola Morolo, founder and director of ASH, said the company was birthed to address the exponential surgical waiting lists in public hospitals As a surgeon, she felt that they
were not delivering on the hope with which patients came to them “Having been exposed to this and turning patients away time after time, hearing on the news that there are so many patients on elective surgery waiting lists, as well as knowing that those numbers are actual patients it was just a compelling call for me as a surgeon to think how the team and I can be part of the solution How can we support the Department of Health,” she shared

Evidence of the heightened rivalry is reflected in unfavourable results for big teams in their opening matches of the premier division
The Cheetahs are among the big three, including the Sharks and Western Province, who suffered losses at the start of their tournament campaigns
The Sharks are the defending champions, having won the title last year after beating the Golden Lions 16 14 in the final
The weekend result between the two teams involved the Durban-based Sharks being handed their biggest
defeat by the Lions, who won 46 5
In another clash, the Free State giants narrowly lost 35 37 against the gutsy Boland Kavaliers in a pulsating fixture played on Sunday, 27 July
This match also proved the level of rivalry that makes the tournament so reputable
The win was a welcome one for the Kavaliers on their return to top-flight domestic rugby for the first time since 2016 The Cheetahs’ defeat underscored analysis by head coach Frans Steyn, who remarked: “This year ’ s edition of the tournament will be tough”
He had sent the warning signal
ahead of the opening fixture against the returning Western Cape-based side This superb match of the prestigious Carling Currie Cup was also the Cheetahs’ first away game
Steyn’s charges were unable to sustain constant pressure from opponents who displayed amazing fighting spirit They fought from behind to salvage maximum points at stake
Fresh talent from across the country’s unions will take centre stage as the clubs showcase the potential brewing within their squads
With the next match at home in the Toyota Stadium in Bloemfontein, Steyn will be looking for redemption
against the Pumas These big cats will face off on Friday, 1 August Kick-off is at 19:00
The ability of Steyn’s charges to recover from the shock defeat and prove their championship pedigree will prove vital in the big task of winning the trophy
The Pumas are visiting the Free State capital with tails up following a morale-boosting 49 28 win over the Griquas in a match played on Friday
Steyn’s mission is to continue blending a competitive, youthful, but experienced team, and he is hoping his new breed of talented players gel in time as the competition progresses
