‘Hekwag’ kry nuwe tuiste

Talle inwoners van Bloemfontein was bekommerd oor die verwydering van die bekende tenk op die hoek van Furstenburgstraat en Nelson Mandelarylaan wat vir so lank ’ n baken in die stad was Die goeie nuus is dat dié tenk aanvanklik verwyder is met die oog daarop om dit as onderdele vir ’ n ander tenk te gebruik, maar dat bevind is dat dit in ’ n baie beter toestand is as wat vermoed word Maj Dana Swanepoel, museumbestuurder van die Pantserskoolmuseum in Tempe, sê die T-34/85-tenk gaan ten volle gerestoureer word Wanneer dit voltooi is, gaan die tenk ’ n ereplek in die WonderMil- Militêre Museum in Pretoria kry Swanepoel sê die span van dié museum het ingestem om die tenk te restoureer sodat dit weer rybaar is
Die T-34/85 is ’ n medium grootte Soviet-tenk wat in 1944 die vroeëre T-34/76 vervang het Dit het ’ n kragtige 85mm geweer en ’ n verbeterde toring-ontwerp Dié soort tenk het ’ n groot rol in die tweede helfte van die Tweede Wêreldoorlog gespeel Die ontwerp daarvan

Meer as 700 vrywilligers het
Saterdag die twee Street Stores in Bloemfontein beman om 2 705 mense te bedien met kos, klere en die Woord
Die Street Store by Ancor of Hope in Hamilton het 1 539 mense bedien, terwyl 1 166 mense opgedaag het by die Street Store in Heidedal Tamara Alberts, een van die vrywilligers van Street Store, sê die bediening het die afgelope tien jaar bly groei en dit is wonderlik dat soveel vrywilligers van kerke oor die stad heen by dié reuse-projek ingeskakel het
Inwoners en kerkgangers het duisende stuks klere geskenk wat deur vrywilligers in verskillende groottes vir onderskeidelik mans, vroue en kinders sorteer is Geld is ook vir die projek geskenk, waarmee onder meer toiletware vir tienermeisies gekoop en in spesiale pakkies aan hulle uitgedeel is Die vrywilligers het vooraf opleiding ontvang oor hoe die Street Store werk, en elkeen is ingedeel om ’ n helper te wees of om een van die talle stalletjies te beman
Alberts sê die mense wat op Saterdag 17 Mei die Street Store besoek het, het elkeen ’ n worsbroodjie en koffie ontvang voordat hulle saam met ’ n helper deur die Street Store gestap het Elkeen kon vyf klere-artikels kies, waarna hulle
ook die keuse gegee is om saam met die helper na ’ n gebedstent te gaan waar daar vir hulle voorbidding gedoen is “Street Store is daar om vir mense wat nie die geldelike middele het om klere te koop nie, die geleentheid te gee om met waardigheid te kies wat hulle graag wil hê,” sê Alberts Benewens die tafels vol klere was daar ’ n speelhoekie vir kinders; ’ n stalletjie van die Kingdom Vision Foundation wat billik oogtoetse doen en mense help om brille te kry; Bybels in Afrikaans, Engels en Sotho wat beskikbaar gestel is; en ’ n stalletjie gemik op tienermeisies waar hulle pakkies met toiletware en noodsaaklikhede kon ontvang

The Free State Department of Health, the Universitas Academic Hospital and the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of the Free State (UFS) have teamed up to launch a new initiative in aid of newborn infants
The PeaPod and DXA Research Facility was officially launched on 14 May
Prof Corinna Walsh, of the department of Nutrition and Dietetics at the University of the Free State (UFS), said the project was a result of a multidisciplinary collaboration across the fields of paediatrics and child health, obstetrics and gynaecology, radiography, nutrition and dietetics
“This initiative is well aligned with national health priorities
According to the South African Early Childhood Review 2024, malnutrition remains a significant challenge, with short and long-term consequences for mothers and their babies, especially during the first 1 000 days of life: from conception to the second birthday,” she said
“We know from global and local evidence that growth patterns established during early life have profound and lasting effects on an individual’s health, development and well-being
“Our work at the UFS has focused on the nutritional status of pregnant women and the early environments to which infants are exposed, both during and after pregnancy
“However, in previous studies, we have faced a significant challenge: the lack of specialised equipment to accurately measure infant body composition
“Traditional measures such as weight and length provide only part of the picture”
Walsh said they have trained two full-time MSc Dietetics students to perform the PeaPod assessments, and that colleagues from Radiography would perform the DXA assessments
“This work lays the foundation for an ongoing infant body composition database – a valuable resource for research, clinical care and policy guidance, ” said Walsh

phy system that offers a more accurate assessment of infant growth and nutritional status than ever before
It directly measures infant weight and volume, allowing for:
■ the calculation of body fat percentage;
■ the calculation of fat mass and fat-free mass;
■ the early detection of growth abnormalities, enabling prompt intervention;
■ understanding fetal programming and how the prenatal environment shapes birth outcomes;
■ offering targeted nutritional counselling to mothers that can improve health trajectories for both full-term and high-risk infants
“We are optimistic about the dual impact of this project – advancing academic and clinical research in early-life nutrition and growth; and also enhancing patient care at Universitas, bringing measurable benefits to mothers and their babies,” said Walsh

Die inwoners wat nog daar gewoon het, is uitgeplaas en die groot werk kon begin Boeta Swart, stigter van Anchor of Hope, het hierdie geleentheid met oorgawe aangepak en die gemeenskap van Bloemfontein gevra om te help sodat dit omskep kan word in ’ n veilige halfweghuis vir vroue en hul kinders
Mense het geluister en meer as 20 ondernemings en tien kerke het daartoe bygedra dat die huis en tuin ’ n algehele oormaaksessie kon ondergaan Anchor of Hope het op Woensdag 14 Mei ’ n ope dag gehou om die gemeneenskap te wys hoe dié huis, nou genoem Miracle House, daar uitsien Dit is nou ingerig met 14 kamers vir ma ’ s en hul kinders, om ’ n tydelike tuiste te wees
Swart sê die idee van so ’ n huis het ontstaan uit Anchor of Hope se Pregnancy Crisis Centre, waar jong meisies wat swanger word ’ n tydelike tuiste het
“Daar is dikwels nie ’ n plek vir hierdie jong mammas om
heen te gaan totdat hulle op hul voete is nie,” verduidelik hy “Talle ander vroue wat uit slegte huishoudelike omstandighede vlug, sal ook hier ’ n toevlug kan kry”
Die huis is in 1940 as hospitaal gebou en later gebruik as losieshuis, asook ’ n koshuis vir leerlinge van Sentraal Die liefdadigheidorganisasie Sannie se Kombuis was later hier geleë
Die huis is binne en buite uitgeverf; boonop is badkamers heeltemal oorgedoen en nuwe storte en sanitêre ware aangebring Die kombuis is oorgedoen, met Ancor of Hope wat self al die netjiese kombuiskaste gemaak het
’ n Hospitaal het beddens geskenk en Anchor se werkwinkels het die kaste vir elke kamer gemaak, asook die banke vir die sitkamers
Die houtvensterrame is met staalvensterrame vervang Miracle House is met ’ n sonkragstelsel toegerus, wat in
die toekoms baie gaan help om die munisipale rekenings so laag as moontlik te hou Swart sê net soos met die Lighthouse Upliftment Centre, die mansskuiling in Lombardstraat, gaan die vroue wat in Miracle House woon, ook gehelp word om werk by een van die projekte te kry

An exhibition featuring beautifully crafted artworks from highly prized cow dung (manure) is open for viewing, and for the public to glean life lessons from, at the Oliewenhuis Art Museum in Bloemfontein
Running until 16 June, it officially opened on 8 May
Titled Qula Kwedini, this solo exhibition by the talented South African artist Mzie Gojo is deeply personal and culturally resonant
He brings to light his rich and proud Xhosa roots and traditions, reflecting his heritage of a rural Eastern Cape upbringing
In his craft, Gojo exhibits the symbolic power of the sacred song “Qula Kwedini” , to explore themes of identity, healing and collective memory
Qula Kwedini references this revered Xhosa sacred song, traditionally sung to herald important communal events, such as the return of a young man from initiation school
With his distinctive visual language and use of culturally significant materials like cow dung, Gojo creates a powerful sensory experience that bridges ancestral knowledge and contemporary social commentary
Exploring the power of cow dung
A dried cow dung cake is used as a source of energy for cooking food, decreasing the dependency on other sources of energy and is entirely environmentally friendly
In Xhosa tradition, cow dung is used in kraal spaces where men gather for discussions and ancestral rituals It symbolizes wealth, stability, and spiritual grounding
For Gojo, the use of cow dung goes beyond cultural reasons
It also exhibits the experience of inner satisfaction and the inner discomfort of real social issues that used to connect people with "umthonyama" (old cow dung that stayed overtime in the kraal)
Gojo’s deliberate use of this material evokes both nostalgia and discomfort, prompting reflection on contemporary social disconnection
Gojo creatively juxtaposes the symbolism of Qula Kwedini with “iKham-
bi” , a Zulu term for indigenous herbal remedies
He draws parallels between these healing practices and his art making process, which seeks somatic and spiritual restoration through indigenous knowledge systems
With his meticulous and distinctive stylistic approach in encoding and decoding the inspired messages onto canvas, he does not “mince his words” in capturing the details of form –warts and all
Deeply rooted in Xhosa oral tradition, “Qula Kwedini” symbolises celebration, unity, and the transition into manhood
It is also performed during stick-fighting gatherings, where young men demonstrate skill, strength and solidarity
These rituals evoke profound memories for Gojo, as they were part of his formative years
Gojo completed matric at the Ngcongolo Senior Secondary School in 1995
Shortly thereafter, he was employed at a furniture manufacturing factory, where he worked for seven years, primarily as a data capturer
He later pursued his passion for art at the Funda Centre and Qula Kwedini marks Gojo’s second solo exhibition ■ Gojo is one of the top artists selected last year for solo exhibitions at Oliewenhuis

Elmarie, wat einde verlede jaar haar tweede kosboek, The Table, bekend gestel het, vertel sy het van jongs af al by haar ma, Nellie, en haar Lebanese ouma, Cedar, geleer om kos te maak
Op skool het sy kosklasse by Marcelle Botha van die Demo-Den geneem
Ná skool het sy in restaurante en hotels gewerk waar sy haar kennis van kos verbreed het
Dit was toe sy en haar man, Tian, in Port Alfred gewoon het, dat sy noodgedwonge haar kosagtergrond begin inspan het om ’ n inkomste te verdien Die besigheid het begin met haar en ’ n vriendin wat tuisgemaakte etes verkoop het In enkele jare het dit tot ’ n suksevolle onderneming ontwikkel wat sy later aan iemand oorgegee het toe die gesin in 2015 Kaap toe verhuis het

Usefulness of AI tool studied
Two Medical Microbiology students of the Central University of Technology (CUT), Free State, achieved a significant milestone and recognition when they presented their paper on artificial intelligence (AI) Chanelle Mcleod (second year) and Nthabiseng Tshandu (third year) were invited to present at a prestigious global event attended by about 803 scientists, hosted by the University of Kent in England
Their presentation, titled “AI Through the Student Lens: A Question and Answer AI Engagement with Central University of Technology Students,” was delivered alongside renowned academics and students from various international institutions
As part of a diagnostic practical, the students integrated AI tools such as ChatGPT 3 5 and Meta AI (WhatsApp) in their investigation to identify pathogenic organisms They populated large language models (LLMs) with patient microscopy, culture, and sensitivity (MCS) data, supplemented with biochemical test results, and critically evaluated AI-generated feedback
Under the mentorship of Prof Parks Makhoahle, Medical Microbiology lecturer, the students engaged in a diagnostic practical integrating AI tools to analyse pathogenic organisms
Using MCS data, supplemented with biochemical test results, they critically evaluated AI-generated diagnoses
Their assignment was focused on identifying bacterial pathogens exhibiting beta-hemolytic and weak alpha characteristics on blood agar, with specific gram morphological structures observed as long chains and short chains, respectively, for different academic levels
“Our students showcased the integration of AI into Medical Microbiology diagnosis, emphasising its benefits while cautioning the attendees about the importance of information verification and human oversight in their final clinical decisions,” Makhoahle added

When elaborating on her synopsis, Tshandu said her experience with AI has been beneficial in her academics as there were concepts that she could not grasp from physical learning and teaching, that she could now master because of the App

She added that using the App for her assignment opened ample learning opportunities as it provided her with more information by suggesting for further testing in molecular or biochemical test to confirm the identity of the organism

Schools from across the Free State took part in the regional Federation of Dance Drill, Cheerleading and Majorettes
Free State (FDDCMFS) Competition that was held at the Brebner High School in Bloemfontein on Saturday, 17 May This event celebrates the incredible talent of Free State athletes
Duane Erasmus, chief judge and vice-president of the FDDCMFS, explains this non-profit organisation (NPO) was established in 2021 during the Covid-19 pandemic lockdown
The FDDCMSA was founded to provide a platform for dance drill, colour guard, marching bands, majorette sport, baton, and cheerleading to youths across South Africa
The Free State played a pivotal role in the federation’s early development, hosting the inaugural national championships in Bloemfontein in 2022
This marked the beginning of the organisation’s expansion, with participation growing from three provinces in 2022, to eight by 2024
The FDDCMFS has been instrumental in promoting inclusivity and youth development through its programmes, even
offering opportunities for both male and female athletes
The Free State’s commitment to these values has contributed to the national federation’s success, including South Africa’s impressive performance at the IAM World Majorette Championship in France, where the team secured 11 gold, 13 silver, and seven bronze medals
The schools that participated, achieved the following results:
■The Olive Ridge Purple Puffs shared first place in pom solo, second place in pom duo/ trio,
and fifth place in pom group Olive Ridge Primary won five silver medals, and a bronze
The Olive Ridge High School won five gold and one silver achievement Atang Primary won ten gold and four silver
The Roseview Stars won one gold, three silver, two bronze, and two fourth places The Brebner High School won a first place in the drill category The Siggies
Independent Team won four first prizes and one silver
