Four athletes of the Bloem Barbell Club returned from the World Powerlifting Congress’ (WPC) World Powerlifting Championships in Durban, hosted from 4 to 9 November, as champions in their respective categories.
Guy Conry (master 3, men under 110kg), an athlete and coach at Bloem Barbell, is the world champion boasting with a new South African record in the bench press (165kg)
He managed a weight of 245kg in the squat, and 255kg in the deadlift, amounting to 665kg
His wife, Mariaan (master 1, female open under 90kg), set a new world record in the bench press with 112,5kg to earn world champion
status This is her personal best
It was Mariaan’s very first time competing in an international competition
Bernice (Bibbi) van der Westhuizen (female open under 82,5kg), who is also a coach at the club, was named world champion in her category, with a new personal best in the bench (90kg) She lifted 162,5kg in the squat and 165kg in the deadlift, with a total of 417,5kg
Andrea Böhmer (female open under 82,5kg) also came first, becoming a world champion with a squat of 125kg, bench of 72,5kg (personal best) and deadlift of 147,5kg a total of 345kg
Zane Wilson (men’s open under 100kg) reached a well-deseved fourth place with new personal best weights in all his items: squat 212,5kg; bench 117,5kg; and deadlift 235,5kg This resulted in a total of 565kg
