He o Friends -
September is here—and with it comes the energy, excitement, and hustle of a new season. Kids are back in school, calendars are filling up, and before we know it, the holidays will be right around the corner. It’s a month that always feels alive with possibility, and this issue reflects that spirit.
Our feature article spotlights the Vienna Business Association Foundation (VBAF)—the philanthropic arm of the Vienna Business Association. The VBA Foundation “Opens Doors” for charitable and community service organizations right here in our Greater Vienna community. Vienna Oktoberfest, their biggest annual fundraiser is coming up on Saturday, October 4, 2025. The best part? All net proceeds from beer sales help fund the Foundation’s charitable work. So, raise a glass for a great cause—because in this case, beer really does open doors! Please volunteer to help out for Octoberfest. Every pint poured, every hand lent, every smile shared—opens doors to a stronger Vienna.
Our Nonprofit Spotlight shines on Kids Give Back: Inspiring the Next Generation of Volunteers. This remarkable local organization gives children ages 6–12 the opportunity to make a real di erence through hands-on community service projects. These young volunteers are learning compassion, leadership, and the joy of helping others—skills and values that will last a lifetime.
Finally, I want to extend a heartfelt thank you to our sponsors. Their support makes this magazine possible and helps us share the stories that matter most to our community. I encourage you to support them in return—shop local, use their services, and let them know you appreciate their commitment to Vienna.
Here’s to a bustling September, to neighbors helping neighbors, and to all the ways we can open doors for each other.
All the best,

COSTUMES FOR KIDS

Next Generation of Volunteers

BY DENISE GAVILAN
PHOTOS PROVIDED BY KIDS GIVE BACK
In Northern Virginia, one small idea has grown into a powerful movement to inspire the next generation of community leaders. Kids Give Back, a nonprofit founded by a local parent, connects children ages 6–12 with meaningful, hands-on volunteer opportunities. Through service, these young changemakers develop compassion, leadership skills, and a lifelong commitment to helping others.
Since 2019, Kids Give Back has made an impressive impact—investing $46,000 into the community and providing more than 13,000 necessary resources to support projects, all prepared by children. Nearly 2,700 youth, teens, and adults have taken part in the organization’s programs.

Service That’s Creative & Impactful
Volunteer projects are designed to be as engaging as they are meaningful. Kids have:
• Prepared meals for food-insecure families
HAND-DECORATED PILLOWCASES FOR ACTIVE DUTY
• Assembled art kits for hospitalized children
• Packed baby baskets for low-income expectant parents
• Created Halloween costumes for underserved children
• Decorate pillowcases for active duty military, and more.
When kids are asked how volunteering makes them feel, the joy of service shines through!
• "I feel thankful for what I have.”
• "I feel happy because we are helping a lot of people in need.”
• "I feel Good, like I helped my community.”
Parents are equally enthusiastic. One shared:
• “As I had kids, it became more di icult to find ways I could volunteer with them… until I discovered Kids Give Back! I love that my kids can volunteer, that I can volunteer with them, and that they are as excited about volunteering as I am!”
Upcoming Events
There’s something for everyone!

With support from corporate sponsors, individual donors, and grants, Kids Give Back is building a culture of service—one young volunteer at a time.

The Vienna Business Association OPENING DOORS
Have you ever wondered how the Town of Vienna has been able to have so many celebrations, events, and festivals? Well, there is another layer of Vienna that many businesses know about, as do dozens of non-profits in the Greater Vienna area. The Vienna Business Association Foundation (VBAF) led by the VBA Board of Directors and the Executive Director works tirelessly to make these things happen. The VBA was founded in 2012, and the Foundation was established in 2016 to act as the charitable and philanthropic arm of the Vienna Business Association. The VBA Foundation goal is to help support non-profit community service organizations in the Greater Vienna Community through grant requests, sponsorships with volunteer support, and connections.

tips from the patrons. First Night was the initial recipient of VBA Foundation funds, thanks to Oktoberfest profits. This year you will find, long-term partner, Shelter House and first timers, Kids Give Back, serving the suds at the festival.
THE RECIPIENTS
Since 2016, the VBA Foundation has supported over 40 nonprofits and community organizations with over $86,000 in donations. Some of these organizations include:
• First Night Vienna 2016-2017
• $18,000/year was donated to host a free, familyfriendly New Years Eve party on Church St.
• Vienna Liberty Amendments Month (LAM)
The funds for the Foundation are donated by the VBA and are generated by beer and wine sales at the annual Vienna Oktoberfest. Additionally, the beer pouring is managed by local nonprofit organizations, who receive a donation from the VBAF, and collect
• For the last 5 years, the VBA Foundation has supported many of the LAM events both financially and with volunteer hours. A few recurring events during the month are: Empowering Women, a Celebration of the 19th Amendment; Juneteenth; Naturalization Ceremony; and the Foundation Document Community Readings.
• Local Schools

• The VBAF supports many local school fundraisers including Cedar Lane, Flint Hill Elementary, Vienna

Association Foundation: DOORS FOR OTHERS

Elementary, Wolf Trap Elementary, Our Lady of Good Council, and James Madison High School.
• Food and Home Insecure Organizations
• Religious Organizations
• Vienna Presbyterian Church - Be Our Guest Prom, Vienna Assembly of God, Our Lady of Good Council, First Baptist Church.
UNIQUENESS OFVBAFOUNDATION

• VBA Foundation has supported many local nonprofits who work tirelessly to support those families in need of food and/or shelter such as: Shelter House, Facets, Real Food for Kids, Belong!, Rustic Love, One Neighborhood Foundation and the Community for Helping Others.
• Vienna Fire Department-Taste of Vienna
• Since the inception of Taste of Vienna, the VBA has provided Beer pouring volunteers to man the multiple beer stations. Tips are raised during the event and donated to the Fire Department.
• Local Children’s Organizations
• VBA Foundation supports many local groups that provide kids with sports, volunteer work and community service, such as: Kids Give Back, Scout Troops, Vienna Little League, American Legion, Vienna Youth Soccer, Reading is Fundamental, JMHS Crew, JMHS Softball & Baseball, and the Fairfax Library Foundation, Cub ScoutPack 1139, Scout Troop987.

The Vienna Business Association is the Vienna Community Chamber of Commerce. Not all Chambers of Commerce have foundations, but it was a high priority for The Board of Directors and the Executive Director in 2016 and that priority keeps on growing.

The VBA and the VBA Foundation do not only hand out proceeds; their job is to help to create a strong local economy by nurturing the bond between businesses and the community. They also promote business growth through professional development, networking, and marketing. The core of the business message is to SHOP LOCAL, and they promote that message all year round. Oktoberfest is a great example of how many of the Foundation recipients are part of this chemistry.

Kathy Georgen is the VBA Treasurer. She and her recently deceased business partner, DH Scarborough are responsible for both founding the VBA and for establishing Oktoberfest under the VBA umbrella – and what a fun umbrella it has turned out to be!
Peggy James is the Executive Director and longtime resident of Vienna. She had a small business on Church Street which gave her a greater interest in the VBA and also the Town of Vienna’s ongoing interest in the SHOP LOCAL theme. This transition was the most inspirational move of her life. Her desire to help local businesses succeed and grow was obvious from day one. Her love for the Town of Vienna and her desire to get involved with everything “Vienna” was clear.

BY ERIKA BAEZ-GRIMES
Wow can you believe we are already exiting Q3: Here are a few Considerations for Business Owners as we look ahead.
It’s no secret that the close of the third quarter is more than just another date on the calendar — it’s a critical checkpoint. Whether you’re preparing for an exit, or simply want to strengthen your business, the decisions you make now can shape your success in Q4 and beyond.
Here’s the good news: There is nine months of financial data available that tells a story. Now is the time to read it closely. Are your revenues meeting expectations? Are margins holding steady or slipping? Are there seasonal patterns you can prepare for? By analyzing your year-to-date results, you can make strategic adjustments in Q4 to hit your targets or, at the very least, put your business on stronger footing heading into the new year. Ignoring the story your numbers are telling is like driving blind into 2026. Think of Q4 as your final chance to “polish the apple” before closing out the books. A business that looks stronger on paper at year-end is typically more attractive to lenders, investors, and acquirers.
But -The year-to-date reality check is not just financial, it’s also operational!
A business that runs only when the owner is in the building is less valuable. If you want your company to be attractive, you need to prove it can run without you. That means training your team, delegating key tasks, and documenting processes so operations are not dependent on a single person. EASY CHICKEN POT PIE
FOR THE CRUST:
Combine and cut in the following ingredients with a pastry blender until crumbled.
• 2/3 cup butter-flavor shortening
• 1 3/4 cups flour
• 1/2 teaspoon salt
• 2 cups grated cheese
Add 7-9 tablespoons of ice water. Using your hands, knead until dough forms a ball. Divide the dough in half and place half the dough between wax paper. Roll it out, then roll out the second half using the same method. Keep the dough in the wax paper and refrigerate while you prepare the filling.
FOR THE FILLING:
2 or 3 chicken breasts, fully cooked in a crockpot. I sprinkle chicken breasts with 2 tablespoons of chicken bouillon and some minced fresh onion, then cover with water and cook. You will want to cook the chicken ahead of time. Add cooked chicken to the following ingredients.
• 2 cans mixed vegetables, drained and rinsed
• 1 cup frozen peas, rinsed
• 1 can cream of potato soup
• 1 can cream of chicken soup
• 1/4 teaspoon rosemary
• 1/4 teaspoon thyme
• to the mixture to make it creamy but not runny.

DIRECTIONS:
• To assemble, line the bottom and sides of a pie dish with dough, removing the wax paper. Poke holes in the bottom crust using a fork. Pour in the filling and place the second pi e crust on the top. Pinch the crust together and cut vent holes in the top. Beat an egg, mix it with a little water, and brush over the top of the pie crust, sprinkling with coarse salt.
• Bake at 350 for 1 hour or until the crust is golden brown.

Over 31 years ago, at age 38, I found myself juggling two toddlers, two teenagers, and a husband whose job kept him traveling for weeks at a time. I wanted to build a business that allowed me flexibility—something outside the traditional 9–5, fivedays-a-week schedule—while still being present for my children.
Around that time, I realized I needed to start taking better care of my skin. One day, while volunteering to raise money for GC Marshall High School and selling mulch outside the school (covered in dirt from head to toe!), a woman approached me and asked if I’d like a facial. I said yes—and that “yes” changed the course of my career.
After using the products for four months and seeing remarkable results, I was convinced. Once I heard the business plan, I knew it was the right fit: flexible hours, excellent education, and strong mentorship. I joined Mary Kay, and I’ve never looked back.
Over the years, I’ve received professional training from five di erent makeup artists, stayed current with the latest in skincare research, and followed trends in artistry and wardrobe styling. I’m proud that our products meet European Union guidelines for safety and ingredient quality—and as a daily user myself, I can confidently say they work.

What I enjoy most is building lasting relationships—helping women and their daughters look and feel their best, wrapping up beautifully packaged orders to mail out, and seeing the joy on a client’s face when I find the perfect skincare or color solution. I also appreciate that this business has provided consistent monthly income for over three decades while keeping me engaged with evolving trends in accounting, marketing, and social media.
