If May had a personality, I’m convinced it would be that friend who shows up unannounced with iced coffee, insists you go outside, and somehow convinces you that everything—from pollen to packed calendars—is part of the fun. And honestly, after a long winter and a very enthusiastic April, we’re ready for it.

This month, we are thrilled to feature the incredible Paris Jacobs, a true force in our community. For nearly 25 years, Paris has been shaping Vienna’s identity in and around the pool—building not only a nationally recognized swim organization, but something even more meaningful: a community. Through Machine Aquatics, Machine Swim School, and Machine Performance Center, she has created a space where families come together to learn essential water safety skills, train with purpose, and cheer each other on. In honor of National Drowning Awareness Month, Paris also reminds us of the importance of vigilance, education, and respect for the water—an important message as we head into pool season.
Our Non-Pro t Spotlight shines on the Vienna Choral Society, a group that has been lling our community with music (and probably a few goosebumps) since 1987. What began as a way to support local events has grown into a vibrant regional organization, bringing together talented voices and enthusiastic audiences from across Fairfax, Loudoun, and Montgomery counties. Their dedication to the arts continues to enrich our community in the most uplifting way.
As always, this publication would not be possible without the generous support of our sponsors. We are deeply grateful for the local businesses who invest in Vienna Living and, by extension, in our community. I encourage you—whenever possible—to support them, visit their shops, use their services, and let them know you saw them here. They are truly the heartbeat behind these pages.
As we embrace the beauty of spring and look ahead to the promise of summer, I wish you all a peaceful, prosperous season lled with sunshine, connection, and maybe just a little less pollen.
Warmly,

Returns for Memorial Day Weekend

Making Waves in VIENNA Through Family, Swimming, & Service
SUBMITTED
BY
TANIA REYES
PHOTOS PROVIDED BY MAURICO
CORDEIRO
For nearly a quarter-century, Paris Jacobs has helped shape Vienna’s identity in and around the pool, building not only a nationally recognized swim organization but also a lasting sense of community. Through Machine Aquatics, Machine Swim School, and Machine Performance Center, she, along with Machine co-owner Daniel Jacobs, II, has created a place where local families come to learn water safety, train with purpose, and grow together.
What began as a career rooted in swimming has become something much larger in Vienna: a family story, a neighborhood institution, and a mission built on connection. For Jacobs, Vienna is more than the place where her work lives. It is home, a community that has supported her family, her children, and the many young swimmers who have passed through Machine’s doors.
Rooted in Vienna
Jacobs’ path to Vienna came through her family and swimming, but her impact extends beyond the sport. As CEO and co-founder of Machine Brands, she has helped grow the competitive team division, Machine Aquatics, into a nationally ranked USA Swimming program with multiple locations and thousands of athletes and swim school participants. In Vienna, that growth has translated into a steady presence for local families who see Machine not just as a training facility, but as part of the town’s everyday rhythm.
Her leadership has also been shaped by years of service in the broader swimming world. Jacobs has served on the USA Swimming Board of Directors and the USA Swimming Foundation Board of Directors and has held roles with the International Swimming League and USA Down Syndrome

Swimming. But even with a career that has reached national and international levels, Vienna remains central to the story. Machine Performance Center & Swim School in Vienna re ects that connection. In 2010, when Paris & Dan decided to open Fairfax County’s rst privately owned swim school, they never considered any other location. It was where many local swimmers had taken their rst strokes with them at Vienna Aquatic Club, and they knew they wanted this facility to be where children build con dence and where families nd a shared space around a sport that demands discipline, teamwork, and resilience. In a town that values strong community ties, that presence has made a difference
A Family Built Around Swimming
Swimming has long been part of the Jacobs family identity. Paris began as a summer league swimmer, later studying
© Best Version Media
business at George Mason University and building a career blending coaching and leadership. Those values—hard work, service, and access—de ne her work in Vienna.
Her children re ect those values. Both Jacobs’ children spent their summers swimming at Vienna Aquatic Club, where their father was the long-time coach, and Jacobs coached and served as the team representative. Lillyan Jacobs, 24, swam with Machine Aquatics year-round and was part of Madison High School’s four-year state championship run serving as captain during her senior year. She also took part in the town’s manhole mural project, adding color and creativity to Vienna. After graduating from the University of South Carolina, she returned home and now serves as Machine’s Director of Social Media.
Daniel Jacobs III, 22, also came up through Vienna sports, including YVI football and lacrosse. At Madison High School, he played football and served as the two-year captain of the lacrosse team. He was also a member of the 2019 and 2022 State Championship Team.

Daniel is currently a Senior at East Carolina University. His path, like his sister’s, re ects the close connection between family, athletics, and the Vienna community.
Beyond Competition
For Jacobs, swimming is about more than medals. She has been a strong advocate for water safety and drowning prevention. Through Machine Swim School and related programming, she has worked to expand learn-to-swim opportunities for children and adults, including infant water safety education, adaptive aquatics, and community-focused instruction.
That work carries a larger purpose. In a region lled with families, parks, pools, and summer traditions, Jacobs has spent years reminding the community that water safety is essential. Her belief that early swim education can save lives is woven into Machine's philosophy, where instruction is designed not only to build athletes but also to build con dence and safety in and around water.

Her leadership in adaptive and inclusive sports has also extended that mission. Through USA Down Syndrome Swimming, she helps support athletes with Down syndrome at the national level and works to expand access to highperformance opportunities. It is another example of how her career has blended competitive excellence with communityminded service.
A Place to Come Home To
After years of travel through USA Swimming and other professional commitments, Jacobs says being home now— focused on family and Machine—is especially meaningful. For the Jacobs family, home also means supporting the community beyond aquatic development. They regularly contribute to local programs that enhance everyday life in Vienna, where their work and roots naturally overlap.
That overlap helps their story resonate locally. Vienna has been more than a backdrop for their accomplishments—it’s the setting for their growth, friendships, and service. Through school teams, clubs, community art, and Machine’s ongoing presence, the Jacobs family remains deeply connected to the town around them.
Why Vienna Matters
In Vienna, community often grows through places where people return again and again. For the Jacobs family, the Machine Performance Center in Vienna is one of those places. It is where children learn, where athletes train, where families gather, and where a broader mission of health, safety, and belonging continues to unfold.
Paris Jacobs has spent her career building systems, programs, and opportunities that reach far beyond one town. Yet in Vienna, her impact feels especially personal. It lives in the swimmers who gain con dence, the families who trust Machine with their children, and the neighborhood connections that continue to deepen over time. For the Jacobs family, Vienna is not just where they work. It is where they have built a life shaped by service, sport, and community.

When Little Habits A ect Big Smiles: Understanding Myofunctional Therapy for Children

By Ariana Grieco Myofunctional Therapist
Many parents pay close attention to their child’s teeth, speech, and breathing—but few realize that the way the tongue, lips, and facial muscles function plays a huge role in a child’s oral health and development. This is where myofunctional therapy comes in.
Myofunctional therapy is a specialized program of exercises that trains the muscles of the tongue, lips, cheeks, and face to work properly. These muscles in uence important functions like breathing, swallowing, chewing, and speaking. When these patterns are off, children can develop habits or conditions that may affect their dental health, facial development, sleep, and even behavior.
Through guided exercises and habit training, therapy helps children learn how to:
• Rest their tongue in the correct position
• Breathe through the nose instead of the mouth
• Swallow properly
• Strengthen the muscles that support healthy oral development
Think of it as physical therapy for the muscles of the mouth and face.
Why
Is Proper Oral Function Important?
The tongue is actually one of the strongest muscles in the body relative to its size. When it rests in the wrong place (such as pushing against the teeth or sitting low in the mouth) it can affect how the jaws and teeth grow.
Over time, improper muscle patterns can contribute to issues like:
• Crooked teeth or orthodontic relapse
• Mouth breathing
• Speech dif culties
• Thumb sucking or paci er habits
• Tongue thrust swallowing
• Sleep problems
• Narrow dental arches or crowding

Because children’s faces and jaws are still developing, early intervention can make a signi cant difference.
Signs Your Child Might Bene t from Myofunctional Therapy
Many parents are surprised to learn that everyday behaviors can be signs of an underlying oral muscle imbalance. Some common symptoms include:
• Frequent mouth breathing
• Snoring or restless sleep
• Thumb sucking or prolonged paci er use
• Dif culty keeping the lips closed at rest
• Tongue thrust when swallowing
• Speech issues such as a lisp
• Crowded teeth or orthodontic concerns
• Dark circles under the eyes or daytime fatigue
• Trouble chewing or messy eating
• If any of these sound familiar, it may be worth having your child evaluated.
How Myofunctional Therapy Helps Children
The goal of therapy is to help children develop healthy muscle patterns that support proper growth and function.
Bene ts may include:
• Improved nasal breathing

Dentistry, our caring team makes every visit fun, comfortable, and stress-free for kids and parents alike.

DR. NICKIE BASTANI

• Better sleep quality
© Best Version Media

• Improved speech clarity
• Stronger oral muscles
• Reduced harmful oral habits
• Support for orthodontic treatment

• Support for healthy facial development
Many parents also notice improvements in focus, energy levels, and overall well-being once children begin breathing and sleeping better.
What Does Therapy Look Like?
Myofunctional therapy is typically fun, engaging, and interactive for kids. Sessions involve learning targeted exercises that strengthen and retrain the muscles of the tongue, lips, and cheeks.
Children practice these exercises both in sessions and at home, allowing them to build new, healthy habits over time. Just like learning a sport or musical instrument, consistency and practice are key.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
My name is Ariana Grieco, I’m a myofunctional therapist at Island Children Dentistry, where I work with children to improve oral function through personalized therapy programs. My goal is to help families understand how small muscle habits can have a big impact on a child’s health and development.
If any of the symptoms mentioned above ring a bell, we encourage you to call our of ce to schedule an evaluation. Early support can make a meaningful difference in your child’s breathing, sleep, and smile.

Fresh blooms, expert tips, and simple ways to bring your spring containers and gardens to life...

Fresh blooms, expert tips, and simple ways to bring your spring containers and gardens to life...
Spring is in full bloom at Merri eld Garden Center. With bright owers in every color, endless inspiration, and expert guidance, you’ll nd everything you need to get your garden growing strong.
Brighten up your entrance by refreshing your outdoor container gardens with spring’s most bountiful and beautiful blooms. In this showy arrangement, bright pink dahlias provide a stunning focal point. That pink hue carries through to the back of the container via the delicate, ruf ed blooms of pink petunias. Tall, wispy salvia stalks dance above the rest of the owers, providing movement while attracting pollinators. Finally, ller plants of lavender-colored petunias and asparagus fern spill over the edge, providing texture and contrast against the natural woven vessel.
Create your own version of a spring blooming container by taking a trip to Merri eld Garden Center and selecting your favorite blooms to complement your home. The plant specialist team can help you nd your favorite standout plants to build a container that’s uniquely you.
In addition to refreshing container gardens, the plant specialists at Merri eld Garden Center recommend taking on these seasonal gardening tasks this spring:
• Fertilize annuals and perennials in both container gardens and landscape beds with Merri eld Flowering Plant Food to keep them blooming throughout the season.
• Tuck perennial color into your landscape beds and enjoy the blooms year after year with plants
like black eyed Susan, peonies, phlox, salvia and Virginia bluebells.
• To keep your garden looking great and in full bloom, consider planting spring owering trees and shrubs like azaleas, forsythia, magnolia, rhododendrons, roses and spirea.
• Check your roses for insect and disease problems, and spray with Bonide Rose Shield or Neem Oil, as needed.
• Check all plants, especially newly planted ones, for water on a regular basis and water deeply and thoroughly as needed.
• Refresh your edible garden beds by adding organic matter to the soil, such as Leaf Gro or Coast of Maine’s Raised Bed Mix.
• Prevent blossom end rot on tomatoes, peppers, squash and cucumbers by mixing a bit of compost and lime into the soil prior to planting.
• Plant your warm season fruit and vegetable plants, such as beans, cucumber, eggplant, pepper,

Plants featured in this container:

squash and tomatoes directly into the ground.
• Put down grass seed like Merri eld Tuff Play and fertilize with Merri eld Select Seed Starting Lawn Food if you need to repair bare patches in your lawn.
• Fertilize with Merri eld Premium Lawn Food and get a head start on preventing summer weeds by applying Preen Crabgrass Preventer if you’re not seeding the lawn this spring. You will need to do a second application in the summer. You can also remove existing weeds with Bonide Weed Beater Ultra or Trimec Speed.

Vienna Choral Society: Harmonies That Bind a Community
For nearly four decades, Vienna Choral Society (VCS) has transformed Tuesday evenings into magic, gathering over 100 voices in song that lift spirit and forges friendships. This mixedvoice choir, rooted in Vienna, thrives as a welcoming teaching ensemble with a diverse repertoire and an inclusive spirit that embraces its membership and audience, delivering high-quality choral programs that spark joy for singers and audiences alike.
Mission and Roots
Founded in 1987, VCS launched as a nonpro t to soundtrack Town of Vienna events, from festivals to gatherings for local residents. Today, its mission pulses with purpose: to create community through music's shared passion, nurture singers' growth, and enrich Vienna as a vibrant musical hub.
Rehearsals hum every Tuesday, 7:15-9:00 p.m. from late August to May, at Church of the Holy Comforter on Beulah Road. Members gear up for three to four thrilling concerts per season.
Executive Director Liss Hindley traded UK shores for Vienna in 2006, discovering VCS as her "choir family." Nearly 20 years later—from singer to board president, secretary, and now leader—she's all in. "I love to sing with VCS; I love the members and its mission," she praises.
"We always say that even if you walk into rehearsal after a long day at work feeling tired and wrung out from your commute, you leave two hours later feeling amazing and totally uplifted by what you have all achieved together. It is a fact that singing is good for your health," Hindley shares.
Programs and Impact
VCS dazzles with bold, boundary-pushing programs: classical masterpieces morph into contemporary anthems, all laced with local air. Epic collaborations shine brightest—Carmina Burana thundering alongside Robinson Secondary School's choir and band; December sparkling with the Monumental Brass Quintet; spring warming with Louise Archer Elementary singers.

Crisis struck in 2009, nearly silencing the choir forever. VCS rose phoenix-like through the leadership of its 2009 board and staff, and later, under Artistic Director Mike Horanski, successfully navigated the Covid era as a virtual ensemble, emerging stronger.
Vienna's
Role in Their Story
Vienna beats at VCS's core, with many singers from Vienna as well as across the DMV and even West Virginia. They've serenaded ViVa! Vienna, Church Street Stroll, and solemn 9/11 remembrances, weaving melody into the town's heartbeat.
ArtsFairfax grants fuel bolder dreams. Neighbors and spots like Nothing Bundt Cakes, Cocoa Vienna, Bards Alley, and Caffè Amouri sweeten the deal with "Friends of VCS" discounts; in return, VCS spotlights them to 2,000+ followers.
How
Neighbors Can Get Involved
No audition barriers here—just a quick vocal check for pitch and part. "Shower singers" step right up; experience optional.
Offstage heroes are welcome too: concert ushers, logistics whizzes, or that annual high school intern shadowing arts management. "Friends of VCS" donors (individuals or sponsors) earn tax perks and shoutouts to 1,000+ yearly audience members.
An Invitation to "Lift Every Voice"
Catch the season's triumphant close: Lift Every Voice, a soulstirring gospel, and spirituals extravaganza with Louise Archer Elementary guests. Join May 17, 2026, 5:00 p.m. at Fairfax United Methodist Church—tickets drop three weeks early at viennachoralsociety.org.
Sing, volunteer, or support: Reach Liss Hindley at 571-5338338 or info@viennachoralsociety.org; follow @viennachoral (Instagram) or Vienna Choral Society (Facebook). In VCS's words, "Singing together makes the community stronger, healthier, and more connected—raising voices and raising spirits as they go."
