July has arrived, bringing backyard barbecues, reworks, redwhite-and-blue celebrations, and perhaps a family debate over who makes the best potato salad. This year feels especially meaningful.

As our nation celebrates its 250th anniversary, we have an opportunity to re ect on what makes America extraordinary. While history is often told through the stories of presidents, pioneers, and historic milestones, it is also shaped by the families, neighbors, volunteers, business owners, veterans, teachers, and community leaders who strengthen our towns every day.

This month, we are honored to feature Paula and Michael McGinnis on our cover. Their story embodies so much of what makes Vienna such a remarkable place to call home. After meeting on an indoor running track more than four decades ago, they built a life centered on service, family, resilience, and community. Michael's service in the United States Navy and Paula's dedication through Body Grace Fitness re ect a lifelong commitment to helping others.

Although their careers took them around the world, Vienna remained their anchor. Here, they raised ve children, built lasting friendships, and became part of a community where neighbors look out for one another and children still spend summer evenings riding bikes and making memories. Their story reminds us that home is more than a place—it is the people, traditions, and connections that shape our lives.

This month, we are also proud to spotlight The Women's Center, a remarkable nonpro t organization serving our region since 1974. Through counseling, support, and educational programs, The Women's Center helps individuals and families live healthier, more stable, and productive lives. Their work demonstrates the compassion and care that help communities thrive.

As we celebrate America's 250th birthday, I encourage everyone to take part in the many events taking place throughout Vienna this summer. Attend a parade, enjoy a concert, volunteer, support a local fundraiser, or simply introduce yourself to a neighbor. Strong communities are built through participation, connection, and pride in where we live.

I would also like to extend my sincere gratitude to our advertisers and sponsors. Their continued support makes Vienna Living possible and helps us share the stories that connect our community. Please remember to support the businesses that support Vienna. Whether you are dining locally, shopping small, seeking professional services, or grabbing a cup of coffee, your patronage strengthens the local businesses that invest in our town throughout the year.

Warm regards,

The Women’s Center

Brings Healing, Support, and Hope to Vienna

For more than 50 years, The Women’s Center has quietly transformed lives across Northern Virginia and Washington, D.C., offering counseling, education, and advocacy to those navigating dif cult moments. Located in the heart of Vienna at 8230 Old Courthouse Road, the organization serves as both a resource and a refuge—a place where individuals and families can nd support, build resilience, and move forward with con dence. Though its name suggests a focus on women, the Center serves everyone: men, women,

teens, children, and people from all backgrounds.

MISSION AND ROOTS

Founded in 1974 by Joan Alden Parks and Peggy Lockhart Mummerling, the organization began as The Northern Virginia Information and Counseling Center for Women, focused on career counseling and workforce re-entry for women. In 1984, it became The Women’s Center, re ecting a broader mission that has continued to evolve with the community’s needs.

Today, the mission centers on providing accessible mental health care and life resources to help individuals lead “healthy, stable, and productive lives.” With loca-

tions in Vienna and Washington, D.C., the Women’s Center now serves more than 3,300 individuals annually.

“Our mission is rooted in impact,” says CEO Rachna Krishnan, who joined the organization in January 2020. “We are always striving to expand our reach so more people have access to the quality mental health care they deserve.”

PROGRAMS AND IMPACT

The Women’s Center provides a comprehensive network of services. Affordable counseling—sometimes at reduced cost or free—supports individuals, couples, families, adolescents, and children. Specialized services for survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault include crisis intervention, court accompaniment, and support groups.

The Center also offers therapy groups, career counseling, mediation services, and workshops on topics like nancial literacy, personal wellbeing, divorce, and career development. Trained volunteers staff an Information and Referral service, helping callers connect with the right resources during times of need.

as a turning point. One shared, “I don’t know what my life would be without The Women’s Center. There’s de nitely a before and an after for me.” Another re ected, “I nally learned how to cope. I still have bad days, but my lows aren’t as devastating as they used to be.”

VIENNA’S ROLE IN THEIR STORY

Vienna is more than just the location of The Women’s Center’s Virginia of ce—it is a vital part of its identity. The Vienna of ce is open Monday through Saturday, with extended evening hours, and serves as a hub for counseling, workshops, and community connection.

Equally important are the neighbors who support the organization. Volunteers from Vienna and surrounding commu-

nities participate in everything from answering resource calls to representing the Center at local events like Viva Vienna.

“We often call our volunteers our backbone,” Krishnan says. “When a neighbor volunteers, it sends a powerful message that mental health matters and that support is close by.”

EVENTS AND HOW TO GET INVOLVED

The Center hosts monthly workshops and webinars, offered both in person and via Zoom, covering topics like career development, nancial con dence, and life transitions.

Two signature events anchor the year: the Leadership Conference in spring and the Annual Gala in fall. The 2026 Annual Gala will take place on Saturday, October 24 at The Ritz-Carlton, Tysons Corner.

Community members can volunteer in many roles: administrative support, event planning, workshop facilitation, and the Information & Referral program. Those interested can complete a volunteer form at thewomenscenter.org or contact Volunteer Coordinator Viki Kinsman at vkinsman@thewomenscenter.org.

A COMMUNITYANCHOR FOR HEALING

At its core, The Women’s Center is built on compassion, inclusivity, and the belief that no one should face life’s challenges alone. For more than 50 years, it has stood as a trusted partner to the Vienna community, offering not just services, but hope, understanding, and a path forward.

“To anyone reading this who may be in need, please know that help is here,” Krishnan shares. “And to this incredible community, thank you for your continued support.”

Building aLifeof Purpose inVie a

n any given evening near the Vienna Community Center, you might nd a cul-de-sac alive with the sounds of kids riding bikes, shooting hoops, and laughing under the watchful eyes of neighbors. For Paula and Michael, those simple, joyful moments capture exactly what drew them to Vienna and why it continues to feel like home decades into a life de ned by service, family, and resilience.

As they celebrated 40 years of marriage this past May, Paula and Michael re ect on a journey that began in an unexpected place, an indoor running track in February 1985. What started as a chance meeting has grown into a deeply rooted partnership, one that has carried them across continents, through demanding careers in federal service, and into a vibrant, multigenerational family that remains closely tied to Vienna.

Finding Home in Vienna

Though their lives have taken them around the world from Latin America to Europe, the Levant, and Asia, Paula and Michael have long maintained a strong connection to Northern Virginia. Today, they live near the Vienna Community Center with their energetic three-year old pup, Mojo, who has quickly become the heart of their empty nest.

Vienna offers something that resonates deeply with them: a sense of familiarity, accessibility, and community. Their neighborhood, lled with young families, reminds them of their own years raising ve children Lee, Charles, Laurel, William, and Robert amid the constant motion of school events, sports practices, and family traditions.

“Our happiest moments are when our cul-de-sac is full of kids playing basketball and riding trikes and bikes,” they share. It’s a scene that echoes their past and af rms their present, blending nostalgia with a continued sense of belonging.

Life in the Neighborhood

Family remains the cornerstone of Paula and Michael’s lives, even as their children have grown and built lives of

their own. Their ve children are now spread across industries and locations, from real estate and consulting to defense contracting and international ntech. Together, they’ve also built families of their own, bringing Paula and Michael the joy of eight grandchildren.

Despite the geographic spread, the family makes a concerted effort to stay connected. “With ve scattered kids, a nearby niece, and eight grands, it’s hard to get everyone in one place at one time,” Paula says. “So we gather as many family members together as often as possible.”

Vienna often serves as the anchor point for those gatherings, offering not only a central location but also a welcoming environment lled with favorite local restaurants and familiar spaces.

Their son Robert, who works for a leading education technology company in Washington, D.C., lives nearby in Vienna, a proximity Paula and Michael cherish. Having even one child close to home adds another layer of connection to their daily lives.

A Life of Service and Purpose

Both Paula and Michael have built

careers rooted in service to their country. Michael, a Stanford graduate, began his career as a U.S. Navy of cer in the 1950s before transitioning into federal service, where he worked from 1965 to 1989. In between, he also spent time with Sunset Magazine in the early 1960s, adding a creative chapter to an otherwise public, service, focused career.

As their family grew, Michael embraced what Paula fondly describes as his role as “the greatest Mr. Mom,” stepping back professionally to support their children and home life.

Paula’s career followed an equally impressive path. After earning two degrees from the University of Colorado and working as a nancial analyst in Dallas, she entered federal service in 1985, where she remained until 2016. She later earned a master’s degree from Georgetown University and has served as an adjunct professor at Georgetown’s Walsh School of Foreign Service since 2017.

Her work has extended well beyond the classroom. Paula sits on several national boards advocating for members of the special operations community, the diplomatic corps, and the intelligence continued

community causes that she and Michael both hold deeply personal. Their commitment has even taken them overseas to represent the United States at World War II commemoration events in France and the Netherlands.

“Honoring our vets, intelligence of cers, and diplomats is our oxygen,” Paula says, capturing the depth of their dedication.

In October 2025, Paula was awarded the prestigious Virginia Hall Award by the OSS Society for her accomplishments during her federal service, as well as her advocacy for U.S. and allied special operations, diplomatic, and intelligence communities in retirement.

Beyond the Front Door

While service has been a de ning theme, Paula and Michael’s lives are equally shaped by movement, wellness, and community engagement.

Michael is an avid cyclist whose accomplishments are nothing short of remarkable. He has crossed the United States by bicycle two and a half times, including routes from San Diego to St. Augustine, Yorktown to Florence, Oregon, and Fargo to Harper’s Ferry. Much of his training took place on the W&OD Trail, a beloved local asset that holds special signi cance for both him and Paula.

“The trail is exceptionally important to us,” they note a sentiment shared by many Vienna residents who rely on it for recreation, re ection, and connection.

Paula, meanwhile, has built a second career centered on health and wellness, one born from personal adversity. After being diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis, she faced a sudden and dramatic shift in her physical abilities. At one point, her right hand became immobilized, forcing her to reevaluate

everything from daily tasks to long, term health.

Encouraged to try yoga, she entered her rst class with skepticism and left with a new perspective. “I thought yoga meant sitting on the oor and saying ‘OM,’” she recalls. “My rst class knocked me at.”

What followed was a years long commitment to rebuilding strength and mobility. Through consistent practice, Paula not only regained function but discovered a powerful tool for managing pain, reducing medication, and improving overall well, being.

Today, she owns Body Grace Fitness and Yoga Studio in downtown Vienna, which she purchased in 2020. The studio re ects her philosophy of inclusivity, education, and resilience. “The practice has been a gift,” she says. “I love helping people and creating a welcoming, kind environment.”

In addition to running the studio, Paula coaches a Special Olympics basketball team, combining her passion for sports with her dedication to community impact.

Why Vienna Feels Like Home

For Paula and Michael, Vienna is more than just a place to live, it’s a place where every thread of their life comes together. It’s where their professional experiences, global travels, and family values intersect with a strong sense of local identity.

They appreciate the town’s balance: a close, knit community with access to world class resources, a place where neighbors know each other and small businesses thrive. Paula’s involvement with the Vienna Business Association, where she has served as a board director since 2021, further deepens that connection.

Their story is also one of continuity. From raising children who played sports across multiple countries to now watching grandchildren grow, from global assignments to local advocacy, and from personal health challenges to building a wellness business, every chapter seems to lead back to Vienna in some way.

Even their everyday routines like coffee dates together, walks with Mojo, and time spent on the W&OD Trail, re ect a life intentionally rooted in both partnership and place.

As Vienna continues to grow and evolve, families like Paula and Michael’s serve as a reminder of what anchors a community: shared experiences, mutual support, and a commitment to something larger than oneself.

In the end, their story is not just about where they’ve been, but about what they’ve built together and within the community they proudly call home. k
