November is here, and with it comes one of my favorite times of the year! A season of gratitude, giving, and, of course, gathering around the table with family and friends. I've always believed that life is better when we lift each other up. Whether it's supporting a local business, introducing two people who can help each other, celebrating someone's success, or simply making time for a friend, giving doesn't always have to be something big. Sometimes, the smallest gestures leave the biggest impact. One of the things I love most about being the publisher of McLean Living is the opportunity to meet incredible people and share their stories. Every month, I'm reminded of just how special this community is and how much we can accomplish when we support one another. As we celebrate Thanksgiving, I hope we all take a moment to appreciate the people who make our lives richer, the opportunities that come our way, and the blessings we sometimes take for granted. And while we're counting our blessings, let's remember to be a blessing to someone else! Wishing you a wonderful Thanksgiving filled with love, laughter, family, and delicious food. And please, save me a seat at the table! With love and gratitude,

© Best Version Media THE CELEBRATION WAS JUST THE BEGINNING

SEJAL & KBHI

By SOFIA ROMAN

| Professional photos by KNOTTING BELLS

After a spectacular Dubai wedding featured in Vogue India, Sejal Makheja and Kbhi Mitter are embracing an exciting new chapter: combining their entrepreneurial ambitions, creating a welcoming home, and building a legacy of their own. Some weddings are remembered for their grandeur. Others, for the way they make people feel. For Sejal Makheja and Kbhi Mitter, their extraordinary five-day celebration in Dubai accomplished both. Featured in Vogue India, the couple’s February 2026 wedding brought 500 guests together for a series of unforgettable experiences. With Raffles The Palm as their home base, the festivities included a Dubai Bling-inspired welcome party, a Hermèsinspired beach club haldi, a Middle Eastern-inspired sangeet featuring Punjabi music legend Malkit Singh, and a spectacular desert reception with a surprise performance by Sukhbir. The wedding ceremony was equally breathtaking. Beneath a canopy of white roses overlooking the Arabian Gulf, Sejal and Kbhi exchanged vows in matching red Sabyasachi ensembles against an elegant ivory backdrop. Yet beyond the fashion, elaborate settings, and extraordinary celebrations, what mattered most was the opportunity to bring together the people who had shaped their lives.

6 | NOVEMBER 2026

For the newlyweds, however, the wedding was never meant to be the pinnacle of their story. It was the beginning of something even more meaningful: building a life that brings together their entrepreneurial ambitions, family traditions, and shared passion for hospitality and community. TWO AMBITIOUS PATHS, ONE SHARED FUTURE Long before their wedding attracted international attention, Sejal and Kbhi were independently establishing careers in commercial real estate, investment, and asset management. Sejal was completing law school in Washington, D.C., while building her commercial real estate private equity fund, and Kbhi was developing an integrated real estate investment and asset management firm. Both grew up in entrepreneurial families, where conversations about business, investments, and long-term growth were part of everyday life. Their love story began at a family friend's engagement party in Maryland, where Kbhi was immediately drawn to Sejal. A playful conversation about their mutual love of sushi led to a memorable first date at Nobu in Washington, D.C., despite Kbhi living in New York at the time. Their relationship blossomed through countless FaceTime calls, frequent visits, and a shared commitment to

© Best Version Media making time for each other amid demanding careers. A year later, Kbhi moved to Washington to pursue his master's degree in real estate at Georgetown University and expand his business into the Washington metropolitan area. As their relationship deepened, they discovered how closely their ambitions, values, and family experiences aligned. “We were both very focused on building our individual careers when we met,” Kbhi shares. “But we recognized early on that we had similar values and ambitions. We both understood what it meant to come from entrepreneurial families, and we shared a vision for the kind of life we wanted to create together.” Today, that shared vision is taking shape professionally. Drawing on Sejal’s expertise in private equity, law, and investment strategy and Kbhi’s background in property management, asset repositioning, and longterm portfolio growth, the couple hopes to create a vertically integrated real estate investment and management enterprise. Their goal is to combine sophisticated investment strategies with hands-on asset management, allowing them to oversee every stage of the real estate investment life cycle, from identifying undervalued properties and structuring acquisitions to repositioning assets, optimizing operations, and ultimately executing profitable dispositions. By bringing these capabilities under one roof, they envision a scalable business built on disciplined investing, strategic growth, and long-term value creation. Inspired by their families’ entrepreneurial legacies, they aspire to establish a substantial real estate portfolio and an enduring family enterprise that can grow for generations. “Before our wedding, we were focused on what we could each accomplish independently. Now, we're excited about what we can build together,” Sejal explains. “We both grew up watching our families create businesses through years of hard work and dedication. What we're doing now is building a family enterprise of our own, one that continues to grow and create opportunities for generations to come.” For Sejal and Kbhi, success is about more than financial achievement. Their ambition is to build an enduring family enterprise while remaining grounded in the values of generosity, hard work, and community that shaped their upbringing. A WEDDING THAT BECAME A CELEBRATION OF TWO FAMILIES Their journey to Dubai began with a romantic proposal on Lake Como, where Kbhi surprised Sejal by flying in 20 family members to share the occasion. What followed was an extraordinary outpouring of love from their extended community. In the months leading up to the wedding, friends and relatives hosted an astonishing 27 pre-wedding celebrations, from intimate dholkis and lively jaggos to Bollywood-themed parties and elegant black-tie dinners. Each gathering reflected the personality of its hosts, but collectively, they revealed the strength of the relationships surrounding the couple.

“Our wedding was as much about our community as it was about us and we were both so overwhelmed with gratitude for how everyone showed up for us to celebrate,” Kbhi reflects. That sense of connection became even more powerful during the ceremony. As Sejal and Kbhi exchanged vows, they recognized that the moment held significance for generations of loved ones, from grandparents witnessing cherished traditions to married couples remembering their own beginnings. “During some of the most emotional moments of our wedding, we realized people weren't simply witnessing our love story. They were seeing pieces of their own,” Sejal shares. Months later, the celebration's impact continues through strengthened family bonds, new friendships, and a deeper appreciation for the community surrounding them. It also reinforced a lesson they hope to carry into their marriage: the most meaningful legacy is often found in the relationships people nurture throughout their lives. BRINGING THE ART OF HOSPITALITY HOME Planning five days of celebrations for hundreds of guests revealed another passion the couple shares: creating memorable experiences and making others feel welcome.

8 | NOVEMBER 2026

© Best Version Media From designing distinct atmospheres to incorporating thoughtful personal details, Sejal and Kbhi discovered how naturally their creativity and attention to detail complemented one another. “We loved every part of the process,” Sejal shares. “From the larger creative vision to the smallest personal touches, we realized how much joy we get from making people feel special.” Now, they are bringing that same enthusiasm to their home in Potomac, where they envision a gathering place filled with family, friends, and meaningful traditions. With a shared appreciation for architecture, interiors, and entertaining, they are thoughtfully creating spaces that feel beautiful yet genuinely inviting. At the center of their vision is a kitchen designed for entertaining, where guests naturally gather, conversations linger, and spontaneous moments become lasting memories. “We love the idea of a kitchen party,” Sejal says. “Everyone ends up gathering in the kitchen anyway, so why not create a space that embraces that? We imagine friends laughing around the island, music playing, everyone getting involved, and the whole house feeling alive.” The couple looks forward to hosting themed dinner parties, holiday celebrations, and casual evenings that combine imaginative details with an easy sense of warmth. Beautiful tablescapes, music, and creative touches may set the stage, but they believe the true measure of a successful gathering is how people feel.

“We want our home to be a place people look forward to coming to,” Kbhi shares. “Whether it's a themed dinner party, a holiday celebration, or a spontaneous evening with friends, we want people to know they're always going to have a wonderful time and feel welcome.” Inspired by the homes and traditions of their childhoods, they hope to create a place where hospitality becomes part of their family's identity and where future generations will gather to celebrate life's milestones. BUILDING A LEGACY BEYOND THE CELEBRATION As they look ahead, Sejal and Kbhi see their professional and personal aspirations as interconnected. They hope to grow a lasting family business, create new opportunities, and eventually pass along not only the fruits of their work but also the principles behind it. Equally important is their commitment to giving back. Having experienced extraordinary generosity throughout their wedding journey, they want to extend that spirit through philanthropy, community involvement, and everyday acts of kindness. “We've learned that generosity isn't always about grand gestures,” Sejal explains. “Sometimes it's simply showing up for someone, making them feel valued, or creating an opportunity for people to come together.” Whether through business, friendships, family traditions, or opening their home to others, the couple hopes to create a life in which ambition and generosity strengthen one another.

10 | JUNE 2026

“Our parents built the foundation for the lives we're fortunate enough to lead,” Kbhi reflects. “Now we have the opportunity to build upon that foundation together, both in business and in the family and community we are creating.” For the couple who once brought hundreds of loved ones together in Dubai, the future holds equally exciting possibilities: a thriving family enterprise, a home filled with laughter, and traditions that will carry forward for generations.

“Our wedding celebrated the legacy of the families we come from. Our marriage is about building the legacy of the family we hope to create.” Their Dubai wedding may always be remembered for its remarkable fashion, spectacular settings, and unforgettable celebrations. But for Sejal and Kbhi, the most meaningful chapters are still unwritten. After all, the greatest celebration isn't necessarily the one you throw. It's the life you build and the people you bring along with you.

© Best Version Media ESTATE PLANNING EXPERT The Biggest Mistakes I See Parents Make When Setting Up a Trust for a Child in Virginia By JUSTINE SENOTT, Senior Attorney, Estate Planning Department Lead, PJI Law

As an estate planning attorney, I’ve seen firsthand how much thought parents put into protecting their children’s futures. When you decide to create a trust for your child, you’re doing more than moving assets from one place to another. You’re trying to make sure the money, property and other assets you’ve worked so hard to build will continue to support your child when you’re no longer there to support them yourself. But I also see parents make the same mistakes again and again. Usually, these mistakes aren’t the result of poor planning. They happen because trusts can be more complicated than they initially appear.

A home may appreciate. Investments may compound. A life insurance policy may substantially increase the value of the estate. Your plan should account for those possibilities rather than simply reflecting your circumstances today. 4. OVERLOOKING SPECIAL-NEEDS PLANNING If your child has a disability or may depend on means-tested government benefits, I am particularly careful about how an inheritance is structured. A traditional trust may not provide the protection the child needs. Depending on how the trust is drafted and administered, an inheritance could affect eligibility for programs such as Supplemental Security Income or Medicaid. In these circumstances, a properly designed special-needs or supplemental-needs trust may be more appropriate. 5. RELYING ON A GENERIC ONLINE TEMPLATE I understand the appeal of an inexpensive, fillin-the-blank trust. But a trust for a child is not a one-size-fits-all document.

1. CHOOSING THE WRONG TRUSTEE

Virginia has its own trust laws, and every family has different assets, relationships and goals. A well-designed trust should address questions such as how distributions will be made, how education and healthcare expenses will be handled, what happens if circumstances change and what protections should apply to the inheritance.

One of the first questions I ask parents is: Who will manage this trust?

6. SETTING DISTRIBUTION AGES WITHOUT CONSIDERING MATURITY

It’s natural to choose a trusted friend or family member. But being someone you love and trust doesn’t necessarily mean that person is prepared to serve as trustee.

I also see parents focus heavily on when their child should receive the money. Turning over a large inheritance at 18, 21 or another predetermined age may not always make sense.

A trustee may be responsible for managing investments, keeping detailed records, following the trust’s instructions and making distribution decisions for your child. They may also have to navigate family dynamics and make difficult decisions when your child wants something that may not be in their best interests.

Age and financial maturity are not the same thing. I often encourage parents to consider staged or discretionary distributions that allow the trust to adapt as their child becomes an adult and takes on new responsibilities.

Here are some of the biggest pitfalls and how Virginia parents can avoid them.

I encourage parents to look beyond personal relationships and consider judgment, financial responsibility, availability and the ability to remain objective. 2. CREATING THE TRUST BUT FAILING TO FUND IT A beautifully drafted trust does very little if the assets you intended to put into it never actually make it there. I regularly remind clients that signing the trust document is only part of the process. Real estate may need a new deed. Financial accounts may need to be retitled. Beneficiary designations on life insurance and retirement accounts need to be coordinated with the overall estate plan. Funding is where good intentions become an actual plan. 3. FAILING TO THINK ABOUT TAXES Virginia does not currently impose its own estate tax, but federal estate-tax rules still matter. I encourage families to look beyond today’s asset values and consider how their estate may grow over the next 10, 20 or 30 years.

14 | NOVEMBER 2026

7. CREATING THE TRUST AND THEN FORGETTING ABOUT IT Finally, I tell my clients that estate planning is not a “set it and forget it” exercise.

© Best Version Media Families change. Children are born. Marriages and divorces happen. Assets are bought and sold. Your child’s needs may evolve dramatically. I recommend reviewing the trust and the rest of your estate plan periodically to make sure they still reflect your wishes. I also encourage parents to have a conversation with the person they’ve chosen as trustee. They should understand where the documents are kept, who to contact for legal advice and, most importantly, what you hope the trust will accomplish for your child. A well-drafted trust can do more than provide financial support. With appropriate provisions, including a spendthrift provision where

suitable, it can help protect an inheritance from many creditors and other financial risks. Ultimately, I see a trust as an expression of a parent’s care and values. The goal isn’t simply to leave your child money. It’s to create a thoughtful structure that can support them, protect what you’ve built and continue carrying out your wishes long into the future. If you’re considering creating or updating a trust for your child in Virginia, professional guidance can help you avoid costly mistakes and build a plan tailored to your family. At PJI Law, we help families work through these decisions with their long-term goals in mind. MCLEAN NATIVE SPOTLIGHT, WHERE ARE THEY NOW?

Jeffrey Nolan From McLean to the Stage BY MARIANNE BANE

For Jeffrey Nolan, the path to a professional life in theater did not begin with a grand plan. It began in McLean, first with music, then with a high school stage, and eventually with the realization that the thing he loved most might also be the thing worth pursuing. Today, Jeffrey is an actor, writer, and teaching artist living in Minneapolis, where he is part of Children’s Theatre Company’s 2026 to 2027 Acting Cohort and serves as an understudy for Pinocchio. Jeffrey grew up in McLean and attended Kent Gardens Elementary, Longfellow Middle, and McLean High School. His first connection to the arts came through band, where he began playing trumpet in fifth grade and continued through high school. “I really credit those band programs for teaching me a discipline that I still carry with me today,” he says. Theater came later, during his freshman year at McLean High, but once he began, he was hooked. A family trip to New York helped make that passion feel real. After seeing Wicked and watching Elphaba rise above the stage during “Defying Gravity,” Jeffrey turned to his father and said, “That’s what I want to do.” Back home, acting teacher Amy Poe helped turn that excitement into discipline. Jeffrey remembers her as someone who pushed her students hard and, in doing so, taught him that he was capable of more than he realized.

opportunities rather than waiting for someone else to offer them. His relationship with Children’s Theatre Company began in 2019 as an education intern and continued through his work as a teaching artist. Joining the Acting Cohort now brings those worlds together. “I have learned so much from this company,” he says. “My teaching pedagogy was built there, and I admire their mission so much.” As an understudy in Pinocchio, Jeffrey is stepping into a new kind of challenge. The production depends on a small ensemble playing many roles, exactly the kind of work he enjoys. “As an actor, that’s my favorite type of role,” he says, “to be able to run around and play all kinds of parts I wouldn’t normally be cast as.” Looking back, Jeffrey says he never imagined as a child that acting would become his career. That is also why his advice to young people in McLean is simple: “If you love doing something, then keep creating, no matter the scale.” For Jeffrey, the stage has always been about more than performance. “For me, being on stage means connecting with my community through stories,” he says. It is a fitting perspective for someone whose own story began in McLean and continues to unfold one role, one audience, and one new opportunity at a time.

Even then, a career in acting did not seem obvious. Jeffrey entered St. Olaf College as an undecided student, telling people he did not know what he wanted to study but knew he wanted to keep doing theater. Eventually, he recognized the pattern. “After saying that enough times, I figured I might as well pursue the only thing that I knew for certain I wanted to do,” he says. The years that followed were built on persistence. Jeffrey performed in community theater, often for little pay, while balancing day jobs and long nights of rehearsal. He continued because he loved the work. “I am so privileged to be starting to build a career as an actor, but it has been my hobby for a long time, and it will continue to be, no matter what direction my career might take me.” That commitment led him to a range of experiences, from performing Shakespeare with BARd Shakes to working with Brave New Workshop, the longtime sketch comedy company. He also began writing and producing his own work, including A Very Good Christmas Carol, a two person adaptation he created with writing partner Hawken Paul and has performed each December for the past four years. Writing, Jeffrey says, gives him a way to create

SEE JEFFREY ON STAGE Jeffrey Nolan is part of Children’s Theatre Company’s 2026 to 2027 Acting Cohort and serves as an understudy in Pinocchio, the opening production of the season. The imaginative, music filled production brings Carlo Collodi’s classic story to life for young audiences while exploring empathy, accountability, and what it means to grow into the person you hope to become. Beyond the Gift

Planning for Year-End Giving By JAMES NAUGHTON, McLean Branch Manager Lafayette Federal Credit Union

The end of the year is a great time to think about giving. For those who are planning significant charitable or family gifts, it is also an opportunity to consider how generosity fits into a broader financial strategy. Start by reviewing what you hope your gifts will accomplish. Charitable contributions may support organizations that reflect your values, while gifts to children or grandchildren can help fund education, a home purchase, or other important goals. Keep in mind that the type and timing of a gift can matter, particularly when transferring investments or other appreciated assets. Before December 31st, review your planned gifts alongside your income, investment portfolio, estate plan, and anticipated tax situation. Larger or more complex transfers may require coordination among your financial, tax, and estate planning professionals. Planning early provides time to consider your options and make decisions that reflect your priorities. A thoughtful gifting strategy can help you be intentional about where your wealth goes, today and for generations to come.

A Healthy Smile Starts Early Looking Beyond the Teeth By GEMA ISLAND, DDS | Board Certi ed Pediatric Dentist

At Island Children’s Dentistry & Orthodontics, we believe a healthy smile is about much more than straight teeth and preventing cavities. It's about supporting a child's healthy growth and development from the very beginning. Our approach starts with prevention. From a child's first dental visit by age one, we focus on establishing healthy habits, identifying concerns early, and creating positive dental experiences. Through personalized preventive care, nutritional counseling, and education, we help families build the foundation for lifelong oral health. LOOKING BEYOND THE SMILE What makes our approach different is that we don't just evaluate teeth. We also assess jaw development, facial growth, oral habits, and potential airway-related concerns that may affect a child's health and development. Using advanced technology, including digital imaging, facial analysis, and CBCT imaging when clinically indicated, our team can better understand each child's unique craniofacial development and guide individualized treatment recommendations. A COMPREHENSIVE APPROACH TO GROWING SMILES By bringing pediatric dentistry, orthodontics, and myofunctional therapy together, we provide coordinated care under one roof. Our orthodontic evaluations go beyond identifying crooked teeth. We assess jaw relationships, bite development, and oral function to

determine whether early intervention may be beneficial. Treatment options may include palatal expanders, traditional braces, or Invisalign, depending on each child's needs. Our myofunctional therapy services also help address oral muscle function, tongue posture, and habits that may influence oral development. PERSONALIZED CARE, EVERY STEP OF THE WAY With more than 20 years of experience in pediatric dentistry, our philosophy combines prevention, innovation, and compassionate care. We take the time to educate families, answer questions, and create individualized plans that support every stage of childhood. At Island Children’s Dentistry & Orthodontics, we don't just care for growing smiles. We look at the bigger picture of your child's development. We look forward to welcoming your family!

The Wonder of Childhood

In trying to better prepare our children for a successful academic experience, and ultimately a successful career, have we missed the point and taken the wonder out of childhood itself? Today’s young children navigate a world filled with screens, schedules, and structured experiences. Yet some of the most important learning happens when children have time, space and freedom to explore, play, and experience the natural world. Even many modern playgrounds feature rubberized surfaces that limit opportunities to experience uneven terrain, develop balance, and build physical confidence.

At The Country Day School, play is not separate from learning. It is how young children learn best. Their play-based program intentionally weaves early literacy, mathematics, social-emotional development, arts, and problem-solving into hands-on, childled experiences. Through building, digging, climbing, creating, storytelling and experimenting, children develop skills that prepare them for their next classroom while remaining engaged in the joy of being a child. With more than four acres of wooded play space, nine playgrounds, a butterfly garden, sledding hills and nature trails, The Country Day School’s students experience the natural world every day, year-round. Their outdoor classrooms provide opportunities to observe, wonder, take appropriate risks and collaborate. Investigating an insect develops scientific inquiry. Building a fort encourages communication and problem-solving. Balancing across a log builds coordination and confidence. Telling a story about a discovery strengthens vocabulary and early literacy. Parents choose The Country Day School for its warm and welcoming sense of community. Families have many opportunities to connect throughout the year at various social events. The Country Day School believes that preparing children for the future begins with giving them what children have always needed: opportunities to wonder, move, explore, imagine and belong. Childhood and academic preparation are not competing priorities. They are the foundation for one another.

Care That Changes With You By DR. ANNA LE, MD, FACOG, CEO, Founder of Anna Health

A woman's health needs at 25 look very different from her needs at 45 or 65. Good care keeps pace with those changes, so each visit focuses on what matters at your stage of life rather than the same checklist every year. IN YOUR 20S AND 30S These years often center on routine gynecologic care, Pap and HPV screening, contraception and, for many women, planning for pregnancy. It is also a good time to share your family health history, which can shape your care for decades. IN YOUR 40S Many women begin to notice perimenopause, with shifts in cycles, sleep or mood. Breast cancer screening, heart health and, if a family is still in your plans, fertility options often become part of the conversation. IN YOUR 50S AND BEYOND Menopause, bone health, heart health and cancer screenings take up more of the visit. A team that already knows your history can make these conversations easier and more complete.
