This November, people of Indian heritage all over the world will celebrate Diwali, aka Deepavali, the festival of lights, love, & laughter. We at McLean Living Magazine enjoyed getting to know one of McLean’s own “Bollywood entrepreneurs” and pediatric laser dentist, Dr. Rishita Jaju, and her family.

Dr. Rishita Jaju is a Board Certified Pediatric Dentist, and founder of Smile Wonders in Reston, VA. She is Harvardtrained, a TEDx speaker, an author, and a published expert in Pediatric Laser Dentistry. Her expertise in laser dentistry and passion for infant oral health have come from her experience in providing care for thousands of infants, toddlers, and children with feeding di iculties over the last 15+ years.

Each year, Dr. Jaju works with hundreds of babies, moms, and dads that reach out to her because they are struggling with a painful, stressful feeding journey. She can often help them by providing a procedure called a ‘frenectomy.’

Feeding, speaking, and breathing can be a ected by inadequate oral function caused by lip or tongue tie. Breastfeeding di iculties, painful latch, and weight concerns are the biggest reasons that postpartum maternal mental health is a ected and a breastfeeding journey is derailed. By collaborating with other therapeutic providers, she helps resolve or reduce their troubles.

son in our feeding journey!” She speaks freely on this topic in her TEDx talk from November 2023. She explains that she and her husband, Anupam, struggled initially with their son, Arnav, now 5 years old, in their own breastfeeding experience. Dr. Jaju jokes that most people now know little Arnav as “a cheeky monkey who talks a lot,” but starting out in the world, his now talkative little mouth struggled with newborn feeding.

I was curious on how one climbs the ladder to TEDx speaker status, so Dr. Jaju explained, saying that it begins with one big question: Do you have an idea worth spreading?

She elaborates that a potential speaker must be nominated, then submit an application with a one-minute video. If chosen, you proceed to a three-minute video, followed by a video interview. If you succeed in those steps, then you venture through an eight-week TEDx speaker training program. Only once the TEDx organizers are satisfied with the presentation quality, the o icial TEDx talk is presented and posted permanently on their website and YouTube channel.

Dr. Jaju was selected to give her talk in Delaware as one of the TEDx Health and Wellness Salon events. Her particular talk aims to empower moms. She emphasizes that if there are things that providers can do to help in a new mom’s feeding journey, they need to be ruled out before putting

the blame on the mom’s lack of experience, cultivating unnecessary guilt and anxiety. Part of her advocacy is that when a parent is in doubt, it’s important to make sure to ask for a lactation consultant. She also feels strongly that new parents should understand the three red flag signs that a mom and baby are likely working around a “mouth issue.”

(See pop-out box for the list.)

Having grown up in India, Dr. Jaju describes the duality of working with the American medicine perspective vs. Indian cultural new mom practices. Both she and her husband, Anupam, moved to the US for higher education. She muses, “destiny brought us together at the University of Georgia." Their love story started out as two friends who had much in common, regarding family values and respect for both academic and professional achievements. The couple recently celebrated their 20th anniversary!

Anupam is the founder and CEO of a digital signage company, Mvix. He enjoys being an entrepreneur in both professional and family life. He is always in charge of planning the family’s travel calendar, which is plentiful, as they have adventured to every continent except Antarctica. He is currently researching plans for a 2025 family safari in Africa. Their son is helping him find a zebra-filled region, since he is in the kindergarten “Zebra Class” at Little Langley. The trio loves being a part of the Little Langley School family. They gush that the teachers and fellow

parents have welcomed them with open arms and have generously become their village to help raise their son.

Little Arnav is fond of swimming with Coach Jo and learning tennis with both Coach Casey and Kristina at McLean Racquet and Health Club. The parents enjoy watching their son create a connection to India, with his memories of already four separate family-focused trips to various parts of India. He also connects with his heritage through Bollywood movies and dancing by attending classes at Studio Dhoom and Hindi language immersion at Balvihar, McLean. As the festive season is picking up, he is excited about all the many family traditions that include gifts, toys, and a plethora of sweets. Since his mom is a dentist, I’m sure she will handle the sugar exposure with meticulous brushing and flossing of his teeth each morning and night.

The family moved to McLean five years ago and have thoroughly enjoyed being a part of the community. Dr. Jaju says, “Like many families, we moved houses and came to this neighborhood during the craziness of Covid times. Our neighbors have quickly become our friends and our support system.” They enjoy the diversity of cultures, traditions, languages, and professions creating this amalgamation of ethnic backgrounds, which is second to none in their experience. They also have two seven-year-old Maltese dogs with playful personalities: Kaju (cashews) and Kulfi (ice cream).

Dr. Jaju is one of the few pediatric dentists in the country who has achieved Advanced Laser Proficiency Certification and Mastership Status from the Academy of Laser Dentistry as well as Breastfeeding Specialist Certification from Lactation Educational Resources. Previously, she served

on multiple international dental mission trips, such as Operation Smile to both India and Vietnam, and now focuses her service on the local community of Fairfax County. Each year, she and her team at Smile Wonders Pediatric Dentistry participate in the “Give Kids a Smile” initiative to provide school screenings and pro bono care for the children of Northern Virginia in an e ort to give back to her community.

Being a mom to a toddler myself, I asked for her recommendations on children’s oral hygiene practices. She guided that a child’s first dentist visit should be by their first birthday and that parents should start wiping their baby’s gums before they even have teeth, then start using a toddler toothbrush when teeth appear. She mentions that as a parent, she knows that saying ‘no’ to sugary treats is not practical but rather recommends that parents should decrease the frequency of sugary snacks and treats while encouraging kids to stay away from sticky candies. She suggests that ice cream, chocolate, popsicles, or other non-sticky treats are easier to wash away from teeth with simply water and saliva and, therefore, are better desserts for kids this holiday season. You can check out more tips and suggestions on her practice’s Smile Wonders’ Instagram page, @ smilewonders.

WHY DO I NEED AN INTERIOR DESIGNER

Hey reader, you may be flipping through this awesome magazine, see my ad and wonder, “WHY DO I NEED AN INTERIOR DESIGNER?” Well, in this article, I hope to answer some of your questions.

While many homeowners believe they can design their spaces independently, collaborating with an interior designer significantly enhances both style and functionality. A designer fosters a calm, cohesive environment, minimizing time, stress, and indecision, and achieving results that often exceed clients’ expectations. Continue reading to discover more.

WHAT DOES AN INTERIOR DESIGNER DO?

Interior designers bring your vision to life by creating spaces that are both beautiful and functional. We carefully consider your individual style and needs, seamlessly blending colors, materials, furniture, and lighting to deliver a refined, cohesive design tailored to you.

WHEN SHOULD I HIRE AN INTERIOR DESIGNER?

We suggest hiring an interior designer before or around the time of hiring an architect, builder, or general contractor. Experienced designers elevate the project by ensuring the final outcome aligns with your vision. We are here to support and advocate for you every step of the way.

HOW DO I TRANSLATE MY STYLE AND VISION TO AN INTERIOR DESIGNER?

Before we begin, we invest time in thoroughly understanding your vision. Through indepth meetings, we explore your preferences, needs, and desires, ensuring we capture every detail. By asking thoughtful questions and carefully listening to your responses, we gain insight into who you are and what matters most to you. Once we have a clear understanding, we thoughtfully craft a design that seamlessly reflects your personality and aspirations, transforming your home into something truly extraordinary.

HOW MUCH DOES AN INTERIOR DESIGNER CHARGE?

Merrie Joy Interiors charges a flat fee based on the scope of work. You will know from start to finish exactly what you will invest in design fees for your home. Our clients love this peace of mind.

HOW DO YOU KNOW HOW MUCH TO INVEST IN AN INTERIOR DESIGN PROJECT?

Your investment is where your project’s realistic picture begins, and we won’t start a project without one. As a general rule of thumb, we suggest allocating about 7-10% of the home's value for interior design expenses, not including design fees.. This will give you a design with some "Mid-Range" products. If you're looking for "Designer" level finishes, we recommend budgeting about 25% of the home's overall value.

WHAT IF YOU PRESENT SOMETHING THAT I DON’T LIKE?

We work very hard to create design plans that we know you’ll love, but occasionally there might be an item or two that you’re just not feeling. We do allow time in our design fee for a couple re-selections.

HOW LONG WILL THE PROJECT TAKE?

This depends on the scope of your project. On average a furnishing only project will take between 6 – 12 months. A refurbishment project usually takes anywhere from 6 –24 months. The project duration includes concept, sourcing, ordering, lead times (i.e. furniture production, shipping and transport) and installation.

If you’re interested in how Merrie Joy Interiors can bring your vision to life, we invite you to reach out to us. We’d be happy to schedule a complimentary home consultation to discuss your ideas and how we can help transform your space.

Paws O the Table!

Thanksgiving Foods to Keep Away from Your Pets

Thanksgiving is a time for family, friends, and, of course, lots of tasty food! While it may be tempting to slip your favorite four-legged friend a morsel or two, choose wisely! Many popular holiday foods can be harmful or even life-threatening to dogs and cats. Here's a quick guide on what to avoid sharing with your pets this Thanksgiving:

TURKEY BONES AND FATTY TRIMMINGS

While cooked turkey meat is safe in moderation, avoid giving pets bones or fatty trimmings. Cooked bones can splinter, causing choking or intestinal blockages, while fatty trimmings can lead to vomiting, diarrhea, or even pancreatitis. Be sure to remove the skin as well and any seasonings that may be on it!

STUFFING AND SEASONINGS

Stuffing often contains pet-toxic ingredients like onions, garlic, and certain herbs (chives, oregano, and bay leaves, e.g.), which can lead to serious health issues such as anemia in pets. Even small amounts can be dangerous, so it's best to keep stuffing off the menu for your furry friends.

CHOCOLATE AND DESSERTS

SAFE THANKSGIVING ALTERNATIVES

If you'd like to share a safe treat, lean turkey meat, plain green beans, or cooked sweet potatoes are great options. Pet-safe treats made with pumpkin or peanut butter (without xylitol) are another good choice. A scoop of 100% pure pumpkin puree while you're baking that pie is a perfect treat for a behaved pup!

By keeping your pet's diet consistent and avoiding table scraps, you can ensure a safe and enjoyable holiday for everyone. Be sure to keep dishes away from the edge of the table (or keep your pets out of the kitchen or dining area entirely) if any of your pets are notorious counter surfers!

We all know chocolate is toxic to dogs, even sometimes causing severe symptoms in pets, but watch out for xylitol as well! Xylitol is a sugar substitute and can be extremely dangerous for dogs, even in low amounts. Some peanut butter brands even include xylitol, so be sure to read labels when shopping for a Kong-filler treat! Keep an extra eye on any foods including raisins, as raisins (and grapes) are toxic to dogs as well.

MASHED POTATOES AND DAIRY PRODUCTS

Plain potatoes are fine in moderation, but traditional mashed potatoes made with butter, cream, or cheese can upset a pet's stomach, especially in those who are lactose intolerant. That goes for mac and cheese too!

The Private Equity Bubble: An In-Depth Look at Acquisitions of Small Businesses

Private equity firms have been around since the 1940’s, but in recent years, the private equity (PE) landscape has exploded, with firms eager to acquire small businesses across various sectors. This surge has led to what many experts are calling a private equity bubble. As these investment groups seek growth opportunities, they are increasingly turning their attention to small companies, raising questions about the implications for entrepreneurs and the broader economy. In 2022 alone, private equity firms invested nearly $300 billion in small and midsized enterprises (SMEs), reflecting a strategic pivot towards companies with growth potential that can be scaled rapidly. Business owners are seeing more and more (PE) groups encroach into their communities and want to know about the pros & cons of selling to a (PE) firm.

SOME PROS OF SELLING TO PRIVATE EQUITY

Access to Capital: One of the primary benefits for business owners considering a sale to a PE firm is the influx of capital. This funding can facilitate expansion, technological upgrades, and workforce development, ensuring that the company is positioned for growth.

Operational Expertise: Many private equity firms bring in seasoned management teams with a wealth of experience. This expertise can lead to improved operational e iciencies, better strategic planning, and enhanced overall performance.

Exit Strategy: For many entrepreneurs, selling to a PE firm represents a clear exit strategy. It allows owners to monetize years of hard work while transferring the company to a group that has the resources to navigate its next phase.

CONS OF SELLING TO PRIVATE EQUITY

Loss of Control: Selling to a private equity firm often means relinquishing control over business decisions. For many entrepreneurs, this can be a di icult transition, as they may no longer steer the company’s strategic direction.

Short-Term Focus: While PE firms may promise long-term growth, their ultimate goal is a profitable exit, which can lead to a focus on short-term gains. This may result in cost-cutting measures, layo s,

or the divestment of certain assets that could be detrimental to the company’s long-term health.

Cultural Misalignment: The integration of a small business into a larger private equity portfolio can lead to cultural clashes. Employees may find themselves in an environment that prioritizes financial metrics over company culture, leading to decreased morale and retention challenges.

Selling a small business to a private equity group presents both significant opportunities and considerable risks. For entrepreneurs, the decision should be made with careful consideration of their long-term vision and the potential impact on their employees and company culture. As the private equity landscape evolves, it remains crucial for business owners to navigate this complex environment with a clear understanding of what such a sale entails, ensuring that their legacy is preserved amid the pursuit of profit. Its important to team up with the right Business Broker to help understand the process and choose the PE group that’s most aligned with your Life’s Work.

Tips to Keep Your Kid’s Teeth Cavity Free!

HERE ARE THE TOP 5 SNACKS TO AVOID:

According to the US Department of Agriculture, one in five school-age children has up to six snacks a day. A variety of factors are involved in the development of excess weight. One major contributor to childhood obesity has been the growing popularity of ultra-processed snack foods (e.g., potato chips, cookies, crackers, candy) among children.

1. CRACKERS & STARCHY SNACKS – We all love them and know them: Goldfish, Cheez-It crackers, and Cheerios. The reality is that those snacks are highly cariogenic (cavity-causing) due to their ability to stick to the teeth. When your kids have those snacks, the starch sticks in the deep grooves of the back teeth. When it remains there for a prolonged period of time (sometimes until the next meal or brushing time), cavity-causing bacteria is provided the perfect environment to start the cavity process.

2. FRUIT POUCHES – Fruit pouches may be yummy and convenient but are full of sugar and contain very little nutritional value (even organic brands). The processing takes away many of the key nutrients of whole fruits. The nutritional fiber is pulverized during processing. Fiber allows whole fruits to be digested slowly over the course of the entire digestive tract, allowing full absorption of nutrients. Without fiber, few nutrients are absorbed. With little nutritional value and high sugar content (some pouches have as much as a soda), we do not recommend fruit pouches for snacking.

3. GRANOLA BARS – Although some granola bars contain protein, which is beneficial to a child’s diet, many contain high amounts of sugar (similar to levels found in candy bars). Granola bars typically contain dry fruit that sticks to the teeth and has the potential to promote cavity formation.

© Best Version Media

4. SPORTS DRINKS – A typical sports drink has over 200 calories and 150% of the recommended daily intake of sugar. A great alternative to a sports drink is naturally infused water—try adding orange or cucumber slices to your child’s drink! It is an easy way to keep their teeth cavity-free and stay hydrated.

You have probably already noticed that when you bite into a corncob, the bits of corn get stuck all over your teeth. Kernels from popcorn can frequently get stuck in your teeth as well. These stuck bits of corn can be hard to get out. They can create gum infections, and if you have braces, they can cause damage to the brackets and orthodontic wires.

CONCLUSION:

Snacking can be a great opportunity to help your child increase their fruit and vegetable intake and develop a healthy relationship with food. Your child's food intake can vary significantly from day to day depending on your child's age, physical activity, and body weight.

Instead of processed snacks, try fresh fruit and crunchy vegetables. Both are high in fiber and will help fill up those hungry bellies. Plus, the act of chewing crisp fruits and veggies can scrub away food particles and plaque. Here are some good choices for you to consider:

• Apples

• Pears and strawberries with yogurt.

• Carrots, broccoli, celery, and cucumbers dipped in hummus.

• Cashews

• Cheese—any type.

Dealing SentimentalwithClutter

5. CREATE A MEMORY BOX: Dedicate a box to the most meaningful items and revisit it occasionally. It’s a way to honor those memories without letting them take over your space.

6. BE HONEST ABOUT YOUR ATTACHMENTS: It’s important to di erentiate between true sentimentality and guilt. Holding onto something because you feel you "should" isn't a good reason to keep it.

7. GRADUALDECLUTTERING: You don’t need to get rid of everything at once. Slowly letting go of items over time can be less overwhelming and easier emotionally.

8. HONOR MEMORIES IN A NEW WAY: If the item is connected to a loved one, you could honor them by telling a story, writing about them, or creating something new inspired by that memory.

9. SEEK SUPPORT: If you find it di icult to make decisions about sentimental items, consider getting support from a friend or a professional organizer. Sometimes an outside perspective can help you see things more clearly.

These steps can help you keep your cherished memories without letting sentimental clutter take over your space.

Dealing with sentimental clutter can be challenging because these items often carry emotional attachments. Here are some strategies that can help: Identify What Matters Most: Set aside some time to go through each item and determine why it’s sentimental. Ask yourself if it brings you joy or has a story that’s still meaningful.

1. LIMIT YOURSELF: Create boundaries, such as a single box or a specific shelf for sentimental items. This helps you prioritize what’s truly important.

2. TAKE PHOTOS: For items that are too bulky to keep or if you don’t have space, consider taking a photo. The memory is often more important than the physical item.

3. REPURPOSE ITEMS: Turn sentimental clutter into something useful. For example, make a quilt from old t-shirts or create a scrapbook with old letters.

4. SHARE WITH OTHERS: If the item could mean something to someone else, consider giving it away. This allows it to bring joy to someone else instead of sitting unused.

On October 18th, the Alden Theater stage came alive with light and color, bringing a heartwarming and meaningful story to the Northern Virgi nia community. The production, based on the touching book The Remember Balloons by Jessie Oliveros, illustrated by Dana Wulfekotte, was masterfully directed and choreographed by Dominic Moore-Dunson. This adaptation captivated audiences of all ages, o ering a theatrical experience that resonated deeply with both children and adults.

In Dominic’s own words, “I first encountered this beautiful book on a visit to the library with my two toddlers. I was so touched – as a father, as an artist, as a storyteller – I had to find a way to bring this story to the stage.” His vision transformed the poignant story into a visual spectacle, illustrating the emotional journey of families who face the challenges of memory loss, whether due to aging or illnesses like Alzheimer’s.

The story follows James and his beloved grandpa, who cherish their special memories represented by balloons. As Grandpa's memories begin to fade, his balloons slowly drift away. James, devastated by the loss, discovers that he can hold onto and share these memories with Grandpa, one by one, creating a bond that transcends the loss.

Featuring contemporary choreography, The Remember Balloons blends modern American dance with social dance styles, set to an original score that incorporates jazz, blues, Motown, and classical music. This production not only entertained but also opened important conversations about Alzheimer's, grief, and memory loss, giving families new ways to communicate and heal.

The Alden Theater’s production of The Remember Balloons was a powerful reminder of the importance of cherishing memories and the deep connections we share with loved ones, making it a truly unforgettable event for the Northern Virginia community.
