DEAR RESIDENTS, Last Christmas, I told you a very personal story about my holiday memories. Here comes another, from (approximately) my 6-year-old self . . . . . . that year, I went to Christmas Mass with my family in our neighborhood. It was funny because it was the 'cool mass', where the people were really dressed up and where we kids mingled with the crowd from all the cool schools that we really wanted to see. I mention this because when we were kids, we really cared about that, so the fact that the protagonist in the following story was going to miss this, something was in the works . My older sister, Neny (real name Lourdes), stayed home that Christmas Eve because she felt sick. As such, she was the only member of our family that was home to answer the doorbell when it rang. On the other side of the door that evening was a homeless family, asking for food. Neny invited them in and said, " Yes! We have lots of food! Please come in and take it." The people that were supposed to be taking care of Neny were unaware of this situation, during which the homeless family retrieved every single scrap and platter of food that had been prepared for our family's Christmas Eve celebration. Upon discovering the situation, my dad and my grandmother panicked about what they would serve on Christmas Eve. "What are we going to eat?", they asked. Guess what? We figured it out. The next day, when the man who had originally knocked on the door came back, on a burro (donkey), to return the platters, he said, "This was our best Christmas. We had food and a turkey for the first time ever. We fed around 50 people with your food. Thank you so much!" To this day, we are very proud of my sister and how her big heart called her to that amazing deed. She didn't even know what she was doing, and through her generosity, she made those folks' Christmas and all of ours very happy. When I think about generosity, I think about that night and how she gave without thinking of the consequences. Sometimes we have so many things and are skeptical about sharing. Believe me, if we give, we receive double. I have many experiences that are the absolute proof of that. For the most part, we live with privilege. If you're reading this magazine, you live in a beautiful and prosperous neighborhood. Let's focus on being thankful and generous to the world in general and to our McLean community specifically.

Fashionably dressed attendees enjoyed speeches by hosts and notable figures, a raffle with prizes from various sponsors, and lively music from DJ Vicious and Tabla Queen Navya Nataraj. The Night of Magic, with over 250 guests, raised nearly $60,000 for Magic Bus, making it a successful and enjoyable Diwali celebration that showcased the generosity of hosts, sponsors, donors, and attendees. Welcome to the Islands! To be more specific, the Island family…of McLean. They are a multicultural family of four consisting of Gema, Eddie Sr.; and their kids, Becky and Eddie Jr. Mom, Gema, is a native of Mexico City who was while in her final year of medical school granted a research scholarship at USC. California native, Eddie, met Gema during his research at the Center of Craniofacial Molecular Biology Lab. Eddie often invited Gema to the beach in Southern California. Gema remembers “spending the afternoons by the Santa Monica pier, and watching dolphins swim at sunset.” Gema also recalls Eddie taking her to a salsa dancing lesson, where the couple could not properly do the 1-2-3 steps of the dance. Even though they might have embarrassed themselves, they now look back on those evenings, and laugh at the memories. Eddie proposed to Gema in 2000, when they were celebrating the new millennium. “There were fireworks and everyone was happy and cheering. It was so special even though everyone thought computers were going to crash,” reports the couple. The Y2K lovebirds have now been married for 22 years! Eddie and Gema are both passionate about helping others, so its fitting that they both have careers in the healthcare field. Eddie is a transplant surgeon, and Gema is a pediatric dentist. Upon moving to Northern Virginia, Gema realized that the community could use more dentists who specialized in pediatric dentistry. She opened her own practice, serving the community where her kids grew up, and now Island Densitry is celebrating a decade of service.

The duo was newly married when Eddie was sent to Hong Kong during one of the original SARS outbreaks. Gema recollects, “I was really worried for him and I wanted him to fly back, ASAP. . . he told me he was going to stay to help, ‘because doctors stay where they are needed', especially during a worldcrisis pandemic. I had to have faith that he was going to be OK and back safe.” Luckily, that's just what happened.

She specializes in the 200m dash and 400m dash, and also serves as the manager of the cross-country team at Georgetown Visitation. When at home, she enjoys playing the piano to relax. Younger sibling, Eddie Jr., is in 8th grade and is considered the comedic relief of the family. Gema muses, "he always causes us to erupt in laughter through his witty jokes”. He has discovered a love of physical fitness and particularly enjoys boxing, soccer and football. Rounding out the family of four is Coco, their beloved six year old Labradoodle. © Best Version Media The Island family prioritizes community service. For the last two summers, both Island children have been involved in International Esperanza Project (IEP), in Guatemala. They've helped to build an infrastructure program, install stoves in poor communities and replace water filters to provide clean drinking water. Additionally, they've assisted in a medical clinic, working with the children organizing activities for them in the medical triage area. The Island family is very involved in community service. They serve locally in Anacostia, and travel to Guatemala for their work with the IEP, where Gema provides free oral care to kids living in the community of Tecpan, Guatemala. Several of these kids had gone years without a dental checkup. In addition to world crisis situations like SARS, Eddie Sr. has helped in the aftermath of the devastating earthquake in Haiti. As a pediatric dentist, Gema and her team have helped with “Give Kids a Smile,” a volunteer organization dedicated to offering dental treatment to underserved children. Her office has also sponsored sports teams, 5Ks and recently donated to the Mclean Central Park Playground initiative (which McLean Living Magazine featured in June 2023). Gema states, “We believe playgrounds hold wonderful memories and foster young friendships.” The Island family loves to travel and has enjoyed incredible experiences in Asia, Europe, and Latin America. They recently traveled to Italy, as their kids are now old enough to appreciate the history, buildings and architecture. Gema reflects, “Our favorite spot was Capri. We were able to enjoy the Mediterranean Sea and relax on the beautiful island.” They love listening to different types of music, especially music from Latin America. The couple loves hosting dinners, which works out well since Eddie Sr. is an excellent cook and guests always compliment his phenomenal food. They both also enjoy playing tennis and watching a good match. Gema finds extra respite by reading novels and watching romantic comedies. The family currently resides in Old Swinks Mill Estates. They moved here 12 years ago, and love living in Northern Virginia. They relish that their neighborhood is quiet, yet very close to D.C. Gema explains “People are very welcoming and friendly. We enjoy being able to walk and run outside in our close-knit community.”

It is that time of year again when the leaves fall, the seasons change, and the holidays descend upon us. Some individuals may experience it as “the most wonderful time of the year,” while others experience what is often called the “holiday blues”, or Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). In the case of holiday blues, this season can be difficult for those experiencing painful memories, sadness, or loneliness. With the holiday blues, symptoms typically resolve by the end of the holiday season. Seasonal Affective Disorder is a mood disorder that is characterized by a pattern of depressed mood often beginning before the holidays, and lasting through March.
COMMON SYMPTOMS INCLUDE: • Feelings of sadness or depressed mood • Excessive consumption of food/alcohol • Loss of interest, pleasure, or energy • Change in circadian rhythm –such as sleeping too much • Fatigue, regardless of sleep • Isolating or “hibernating” • A sense of feeling overwhelmed when needing to complete daily tasks. • Thoughts of harming yourself or death
Seeking a mental health provider can help with diagnosis and treatment of these symptoms. A combination of supportive psychotherapy and medication management can provide you with the best outcome. Therapy can alleviate symptoms and prevent your mental health from worsening by learning adaptive coping skills and identifying thoughts and behaviors that may be contributing to the depressed mood. If you are concerned about yourself, a family member, or a friend, please seek professional support. At Integrated Psychology Associates of McLean, we have trained mental health providers to work with people of all ages. Cultivating a Culture of Gratitude: MORE THAN JUST A YEAR-END BONUS By KELLY FEATHERINGHAM ACC, Executive Career Coach
A
s the year winds down and a festive spirit takes hold, it's customary for organizations to express their thanks to their teams, often in the form of a year-end bonus. However, while financial incentives are important, they're only a piece of the puzzle when it comes to building a truly appreciative team culture. True gratitude in the workplace transcends transactions and touches the very heart of organizational life. Why is this culture of gratitude important? Studies consistently show that when employees feel valued and appreciated, they exhibit higher job satisfaction, are more productive, and are less likely to leave. Gratitude isn't just good manners; it's a business strategy. But how do you weave this ethos into the daily fabric of work life? BEGIN WITH AUTHENTIC RECOGNITION Gratitude begins with seeing and acknowledging the specific contributions of each team member. Celebrate milestones, yes, but also the smaller, daily victories that often go unnoticed. Genuine recognition doesn't wait for the annual review; it happens in real-time and comes from the heart. INCORPORATE APPRECIATION INTO YOUR STRUCTURE Make gratitude a part of your regular team meetings. Allow time for shout-outs, where team members can acknowledge each other's help and support. Encourage peer-to-peer recognition. It isn't always about leaders recognizing employees; it's about everyone recognizing each other. It's a culture where a 'thank you' is not just a polite gesture, but a heartfelt acknowledgment of someone's effort and contribution.
EMPOWER THROUGH PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT Invest in your team's growth. Offering opportunities for learning and advancement while truly encouraging your team to develop their strengths shows that you value their long-term contribution and well-being, not just their immediate output. This could range from professional development workshops to personalized coaching sessions that help employees tap into their core strengths. Our Ripple Roots Foundational Strengths program, for example, is designed to help individuals understand and use their unique talents, reinforcing their value within the team. ENSURE TRANSPARENCY AND INCLUSION Involve your team in decisions where possible. This can manifest as inviting input on a new project or considering their feedback on company policies. When employees feel heard, they feel valued. That's gratitude in action. FOSTER A CULTURE OF TRUST Trust is the foundation of any gratitude practice. Employees need to feel secure to be vulnerable enough to show appreciation. This means consistent behavior from leadership, clear communication, and an environment where feedback is welcomed and acted upon. ENCOURAGE VOLUNTARY ACTS OF KINDNESS Small, voluntary acts of kindness can ripple through an organization, strengthening bonds and building a shared culture of appreciation. It could be as simple as helping a colleague meet a tight deadline or mentoring a new team member. Acts of service, such as flexible
scheduling or providing a team lunch, can often speak louder than words. From leadership they show that you understand and care about your team's well-being and work-life balance. Gratitude isn't a once-a-year event. It's a daily practice that, when cultivated intentionally, can transform the very DNA of your organization. As we approach the end of the year, it's the perfect time to reflect on how we can express appreciation for our teams in ways that resonate more deeply than any monetary reward ever could. As we move into a new year, consider how a gratitude-centered approach can transform your organization, creating and environment where your teams don't just work, they thrive. I invite you to continue the conversation and discover how a foundation of strengths can enhance the culture of your team. Visit our website www.teamleadsolutions.com and explore the potential a focus on strengths can unlock, not just for the individual, but for the collective harmony and success of your entire organization.

FEAR'S ROLE IN DENTAL AND MEDICAL HEALTH NEGLECT, AND HOW SEDATION CAN HELP
F
ear is a powerful emotion that can dictate our choices and actions, sometimes to our own detriment. Dental anxiety and fear are no exceptions, often leading to the avoidance of routine dental care and, as a result, serious dental and medical issues. Dental anxiety is more than mere apprehension about upcoming dental appointments. It is a profound fear, often characterized by physical symptoms such as increased heart rate, sweating, and feeling of panic. These feelings make it incredibly difficult for many individuals to seek necessary dental care. The fear of dentists, otherwise known as “odontophobia”, often stems from past traumatic experiences such as painful procedures, negative interactions with dental staff or general sense of losing control. Yet, this fear can also be fueled by cultural depictions of dentistry as a painful, frightening experience, further perpetuating avoidance behavior. Neglecting regular dental visits due to fear and anxiety can lead to a host of oral health problems. Routine care is crucial in identifying and treating issues like cavities, gum disease, and oral cancers at their early stages. Avoidance can allow these conditions to progress unchecked, often requiring more intensive treatments when finally addresses, thus compounding the initial fear. The consequences are not limited to oral health either. There is a growing body of research that links oral health to overall systemic health. Conditions such as periodontal disease, an advanced form of gum disease, have demonstrated association with heart disease, diabetes, and stroke. Inflammation in the mouth can lead to systemic inflammation, potentially exacerbating these conditions. Similarly, bacteria from the mouth can enter the bloodstream and affect other areas of the body. In light of these risks, it's essential to address dental anxiety and fear. Various strategies can be employed to calm apprehensive patients, ranging from creating a more soothing environment in the dental office to employing sedation techniques. Oral sedation has emerged as a game-
changer for patients with dental phobia, offering an effective solution to overcome anxiety and access necessary dental care. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) has also shown promise in managing dental anxiety, helping patients reframe their fears and develop coping strategies. Dentists, too, play a vital role in reducing fear among patients. They can do this by explaining procedures thoroughly, maintaining open lines of communication, and demonstrating empathy and understanding to their patients’ concerns. By establishing a trustful relationship, dentists can help alleviate patients’ fears and encourage more regular visits. Additionally, the role of technology in mitigating dental fear should not be underestimated. Advances in dental technology have made many procedures less invasive and more comfortable for patients. Public health campaigns can be created to educate the public about the importance of dental health, the consequences of neglect, and the various strategies available to manage dental anxiety and fear. Dental anxiety and fear of dentists are significant barriers to routine dental care. These fears, if left unchecked, can lead to severe dental and medical complications. However, through a combination of psychological intervention, empathetic care from dentists, technological improvements, public health initiatives and employing sedation dentistry as part of the dental practice, it's possible to alleviate these fears and promote better dental and overall health. For the sake of your smiles and your health, it's time you face your fears. Here at Mclean Aura Dentistry we have many tools to help you achieve your best smile and overall health. Please, ask us how we can help. “Smile, for your teeth are radiant jewels that illuminate your face, reflecting both beauty and vitality. Nurture them with care, and behold the power of a healthy and vibrant smile.”

Unveiling the Marvels of Microneedling:
A JOURNEY TO REVITALIZED SKIN By DR. RANA HASHEMI D. M from MedJuvenis
T
he skin, a complex tapestry of layers, is comprised of the epidermis (outer layer) and the dermis (beneath the epidermis), with the subcutaneous layer serving as its base. The dermis functions as a support system for the epidermis. Skin elasticity owes its existence to elastin, which gradually diminishes with age, followed by a reduction in collagen. This leads to the deterioration of the epidermal foundation, resulting in fragile, wrinkled, and sagging skin. Via the process of microneedling, numerous extremely fine and sharp needles penetrate the dermis at an appropriate depth without causing harm to the epidermis, with a consistent penetration rate of approximately 4000 to 6000 times per minute. This action prompts collagen and elastin to initiate the process of repair and regeneration, leading to firmer skin and the reduction of surface wrinkles, visible about three weeks after the procedure. Local anesthesia is administered to ensure a pain-free experience for the patient. During the needle penetration, depending on the skin type and treatment objective, nourishing substances such as vitamins, hyaluronic acid, exfoliants, and more can be delivered to the dermal layer, all contributing to skin rejuvenation.
Stunning Look
CONFIDENT MIND
Microneedling can be performed once a month for three months initially, followed by maintenance sessions every six months. Its indications include skin rejuvenation, the reduction of fine wrinkles, treatment of deep scars like acne scars, sun-induced pigmentation, and reduction of skin laxity. Prior to microneedling, certain precautions are necessary, such as abstaining from the use of brightening creams containing hydroquinone and exfoliants 72 hours before the procedure. Avoiding the use of tanning beds is essential, and the application of sunscreen is mandatory. Post-microneedling care involves a rapid healing process. It is recommended to stay at home on the day of the procedure, cleanse the face regularly with cold water, and apply colorless sunscreen every two hours for the next 48 hours. Additionally, 45 minutes before going outside, use a layer of sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher, and reapply every three hours when outdoors. Utilize moisturizing and repairing creams at night and, if experiencing brief pain and burning, consider taking acetaminophen. Incorporate fresh vegetables, fruits, and vitamin C into your diet for optimal results. So, there you have it, folks! The secret of microneedling – where tiny needles play hero, and your skin gets the VIP treatment it deserves. Who said achieving eternal youth couldn't be an adventure? Cheers to laughter, love, and a face smoother than a buttered slide!

DANIEL GOLOBORODKO The Boy With a Heart of Gold and the Strength of a Lion By DANI BANEGAS Photos by Tatiana Dove In this edition's sports section, I had the privilege of discovering the inspiring story of a remarkable young man, Daniel Goloborodko. As I delved into his world, I found the perfect words to paint a vivid picture of Daniel, not from my perspective, but from the heartfelt expressions of his mom. She says "every mom claims her child is special, and I'm no different. But let me share why my Daniel truly is special. I vividly recall February 15, 2008, after 15 hours of labor, holding him against my chest for the first time. His big blue eyes stared at me, and I knew he would grow up to be wise and mature." Daniel's charm, curiosity, and caring nature have made him well-liked among his peers as well as his teachers, who remember and speak fondly of him. Described as supportive, protective, smart, wise, mature, and social, Daniel embodies a unique blend of qualities.
Daniel competes in various sports, including soccer, skiing, and football. The sophomore is currently a member of his high school football team, and is equally passionate about lacrosse. Daniel says, "I like football because it physically and mentally prepares me for anything, providing discipline and physicality."

Participation in team sports has equipped Daniel with skills in understanding and motivating teammates, making plans, and fostering teamwork. His coach's advice, "Give 100% effort on everything you do, especially in practice," resonates deeply with Daniel, who lives by the motto, "if I don't train to failure, I will become one." Beyond sports, Daniel's commitment to self-improvement extends to various activities like going to the gym, running, and keeping his body fueled with his favorite healthy snacks, fruits, and lean protein. His downtime includes moments of calm with a good read. His dreams for the future include excelling in football and lacrosse during high school, aiming to play one of these sports at a Division 1 college, and perhaps even at the professional level. If that path proves unavailable, Daniel is interested in becoming a psychologist, emphasizing the importance of socializing, gaining strength, and maintaining overall health. Daniel Goloborodko is not just an athlete; he's a young man shaping a promising future while embracing the diverse facets of a well-rounded life.

The Healing Power of Oncology Esthetics NURTURING BEAUTY & CONFIDENCE DURING CANCER TREATMENT By LISA TEP UNDERSTANDING ONCOLOGY ESTHETICS Oncology esthetics is a specialized branch of skincare and beauty therapy that caters specifically to those affected by cancer. Trained estheticians in this field possess an understanding of the physiological and psychological changes that cancer treatments can cause, including skin sensitivities, changes in hair and nail health, and overall fatigue.
I
n my almost two decades of practicing esthetics, I've met some amazing clients. These relationships span years and I get to experience their life events and milestones. Along the way, I'd notice clients who would take a "skincare hiatus". I wouldn't see them for months; sometimes even longer. When they'd return, they would share their cancer journey with me. The fear, anxiety, anger and joy (because they triumphed) are always palpable. Traditional esthetics training taught us to pause professional skincare services during cancer treatment, but that just never made sense to me. It's a time, arguably, when my client's skin needed the most help. Even traditional medicine has embraced a more holistic approach to cancer treatment, supporting more integrative care. A cancer diagnosis can be a life-altering event, impacting not only physical health but also emotional well-being. For those navigating the challenging journey of cancer treatment, finding moments of comfort and self-care can be transformative. This is where the field of oncology esthetics steps in, offering an approach that focuses on enhancing the overall well-being of cancer patients.
COMPASSIONATE AND INCLUSIVE CARE: Oncology estheticians are specially trained to provide compassionate, inclusive care to cancer patients. The last thing someone on their cancer journey needs to hear is that they're "untouchable". On the contrary, trained estheticians understand the unique side effects that cancer treatments can cause and are able tailor skincare services to meet the specific needs of their clients. This creates a safe and supportive environment where clients can relax and focus on their well-being. ADDRESSING SKIN SENSITIVITIES: Cancer treatments, such as chemotherapy and radiation, can often lead to skin sensitivities and irritation. Oncology estheticians use thoughtfully formulated products to soothe and nourish delicate skin. This not only provides physical relief but also promotes a sense of comfort and confidence. RESTORING SELF-IMAGE: The physical changes that accompany cancer treatment can have a profound impact on a person's self-esteem. Oncology estheticians are skilled in techniques that help restore a sense of normalcy, including skin care routines that address issues like dryness, redness, and pigmentation changes. EMOTIONAL WELL-BEING: A crucial aspect of oncology esthetics is its focus on emotional well-being. Spa treatments, massage therapy, and relaxation techniques offered by trained estheticians can help alleviate stress, anxiety, and depression, which are common emotional challenges faced by cancer patients. EDUCATION AND EMPOWERMENT: Oncology estheticians play a vital role in educating patients about self-care practices that can be incorporated into their daily routines. This empowers individuals to take an active role in their own well-being, fostering a sense of control and agency during a time when they may feel overwhelmed. Oncology esthetics is a powerful adjunct to traditional cancer care, addressing the unique physical and emotional needs of individuals undergoing treatment. At Sesen Spa, we offer the Care & Comfort Manicure, Pedicure & Facial which focuses on our client's overall well-being, through a holistic approach that recognizes the importance of both body and spirit in the healing process.

SOCIAL4GOOD AND HELPING HUNGRY KIDS WORK TOGETHER TO FEED NOVA CHILDREN Article and Photos By SHARON GRACE
Fortnite, Yankee Candle, and Melissa & Doug toy company are among the many successful endeavors that started in a basement. Helping Hungry Kids (HHK) shares that same beginning. In 2009, Connie Laurent-Roy and Sandy Amato had a vision that began in a basement in Reston, Virginia. They knew not every child in Fairfax County had enough food on weekends and during school breaks. Social4Good (S4G) recognized HHK's important work and supported their food pack efforts in October. S4G members gathered, also in a basement, with bins of fruit cups, applesauce, pudding, cereal, soup, mac n' cheese, milk, and more. After a spirited and efficient assembly line of bag packing, members learned more about HHK. Due to the generosity of the Social4Good community, members created 500 weekend bags which included special Halloween treats and notes created by Emmaus United Church of Christ at their annual retreat. In addition to the bags, Social4Good donated more than 4,900 cartons of shelf stable milk and lots of extras for HHK to pack into their next round of school deliveries. "With the increasing number of bags we provide and rising price of food, HHK’s future depends on continuing assistance from loyal supporters, like Social4Good. Thank you again, to Team October for helping coordinate this effort - we know how much time and effort goes into a huge packing event, and we are so grateful for your generosity," says HHK member, Kate Brown. S4G is an all-volunteer, grassroots organization that brings together engaged women who want to meet new people and support the organizations that make our community strong. Each month, this column will highlight S4G's monthly project to raise awareness on critical needs in our community and local nonprofits making a difference.
