My Dearest McLean Residents:

Here we are again; Happy Spring!!!! Trees are blossoming, grasses are peeking their heads out of the brown earth, and flowers are blooming. The themes of rebirth are everywhere! The seasons of Lent, Easter, Rahmahdan, Passover and holidays of many more traditions fill our homes.

In my own home, these 40 days of Lent have been busy. Between all of these observances, there are only a few moments here and there to slow down and remember why we were celebrating in the first place.

In the midst of my crazy busy life , I have to admit that I totally stopped celebrating mass. I observed my daughter going to services with my dear friend, Sara, and her family. I must say I felt pretty embarrassed every Sunday to watch her go, and watch myself stay 'resting' after a busy week. However, when my 11 yo daughter, Allegra, asked me to join in their Ash Wednesday services, I replied, “Oh sure. Lets go”. Truth be told, I didn't really want to. During services, she asked me “ Mom what are you doing for Lent?” And I stopped in my tracks and reconsidered how I could recommit myself to what is important to me.

We in McLean come from myriad traditions. We draw strength from our faiths, our families and countries of origin and from our commitment to serve our fellow citizens, regardless of faith or creed or custom. Personally, I am recommitting to my own spiritual customs, and I hope you might do the same, whatever that may be.

Let's take this season of rebirth as a time to celebrate whatever inside of us encourages us to improve. We can wait, we an be uncertain. There is a plan, and we are all traveling and working it. Do so in kindness and grace!

Until next month!

Sincerely,

OPINION: Are Gel Manicures Safe?

A recent study published in the Nature Communications Journal on January 17, 2023, has led to questions among our client base, and across the area at large, about the safety of gel manicures. As such, I did a deep dive into the study in an effort to better understand the data. I found a study that, by the researchers' own admissions, included limitations that prevented them from producing sufficient evidence to draw solid conclusions. The negative press generated by this inconclusive research and echoed by some major media outlets have created more questions than answers regarding the safety of gel manicures, which I believe are not clearly and conclusively backed by science.

During their study, researchers employed a 54-W UV nail drying machine that emits UV photons via 6 bulbs during the gel polish curing process. They exposed human and murine (mice) cells to acute and chronic exposure in order to evaluate the DNA damage and other effects of UV radiation emitted by a gel polish UV curing lamp. For their purposes, acute exposure was defined as 20 minutes, twice a day, within a single day. Chronic exposure was defined as 20 minutes per day for 3 consecutive days. All non-control, tested cells showed varying levels of cell death, oxidative and DNA damage.

Researchers acknowledge at least 3 important limitations of their experiments:

• tested cells were missing the cornified layer of the epidermis (the outer layer of the skin that can absorb much of the UV irradiation),

• in-vitro systems can experience different mutations than those that occur in normal human skin, and

• the mutations found in the study do not provide direct information on skin carcinogenesis in human populations.

Given the limitations of this study, it is my opinion that the results are inconclusive. I commend the researchers for their effort in trying to determine whether or not dangers truly exist when using UV gel polish curing lamps. As a spa owner and wellness practitioner, the last thing I want to do is to provide a service that is harmful to my clients! But, in addition to the limitations that the researchers have themselves acknowledged, there are questions about the study's parameters:

• Exposure duration: Why did the researchers choose to irradiate for 20 minutes? They note in the study that, in a real-life scenario, client's hands are under the lamp for up to 10 minutes (5 minutes per hand). So why did they choose to expose the test samples to twice the normal time? Moreover, in the acute exposure testing scenario, the researchers irradiated the test samples for 20 minutes, twice in a single day. Not only is 20

minutes twice the normal exposure time in a single salon setting, but 40 minutes of exposure doesn't occur in a single gel manicure appointment?

In the chronic exposure testing scenario, the researchers irradiated the test samples for three consecutive days (again 20-minute sessions). To the best of my knowledge, clients don't subject themselves to gel polish manicures for 3 consecutive days. Rather, regular gel polish manicure clients are seen every two to three weeks (and their hands are exposed for up to 10 minutes max, not 20).

• Lamp selection: The concern over UV exposure in gel manicures is not a new topic. The professional nail care industry, many years ago, moved away from UV curing lamps and, instead, opted for LED light curing devices. Despite a lack of concrete evidence that UV curing lamps posed an increased danger for skin cancer, the industry pivoted to a different technology all together. UV curing lamps are still available and used, but many salons and spas have opted for LED curing instead (which is not mentioned or tested in the study at all).

Clients ask me all the time - which service will be the least damaging to their natural nails - gel, builder gel, dip or acrylic, etc? My response is ALWAYS the same - if your primary concern is about the health of your natural nails, you should stay away from all of them (even regular polish). Get regular manicures, buff your nails and use cuticle oil every day, all day long. I'm not in the business of convincing clients to get a service so I can make an extra buck. Our approach, at Sesen, has been to make gel manicures as safe as possible based on the most current and available science. When there was concern over UV gel curing lamps, we immediately switched to LED curing devices. We've implemented changes to our protocol -

• Application of a broadband, physical sunscreen prior to curing under the LED light.

• Fingertip-less, UV-absorbing gloves are on hand for clients to wear during the curing time.

In the end, clients should review the science, consider their own personal health factors and make a decision based on that data. Whether you opt for a gel polish manicure or not, the decision is entirely personal. Curious about the science, data and research? Head over to our blog because I've got links to all the studies in my blog post. The FDA even has a nifty video for you to watch and tips on how to stay safe during nailcare services.

Hopelessly DEVOTO-ED to McLean: MEET HEATHER AND HER FAMILY

One thing is certain about the Devoto Familythey are a busy bunch! Between work, school and sports, this family of four is always on the move! The family consists of Heather, her husband Roberto and their two sons, Roberto David (14) and Cesar Alexander (9).

Heather and Roberto Sr., originally met through Roberto’s brother, who mentioned to his then-friend Heather that he thought she and Roberto would hit it off. He was right; Roberto won Heather over with his confidence during a night on the town, and the rest is history! The two honeymooned in Florence, Italy, for two weeks and it is still one of the best trips they’ve taken. Heather recalls it as a wonderful opportunity for these two professionals to unplug from the fast paced world of work. They spent their time in Florence extensively exploring the city and of course, there was fabulous shopping involved!

In her younger years, Heather grew up in Arlington, VA, and attended H-B Woodlawn High School. Her parents are still nearby, currently residing in Falls Church, VA. After high school, Heather graduated from Loyola University as a business major. She began her career in New York City in the fashion and advertising industry before switching to the mortgage business over 15 years ago. During this time she has closed over $1 billion in sales and counting! Discussing her success, Heather notes that “as a woman in a maledominated industry, I am proud to have closed more business than anyone in my company’s history.” She opened the McLean office for her company, First Home, and has an all-female team in her office. She is licensed in VA, MD and DC – helping homebuyers purchase their

first home or even their fifth home. She explains that she takes time with each buyer and their agents to give them extra care and to help guide them to make the best decision for their home-buying needs. Heather elaborates that she enjoys helping people. She originally hoped to be a financial planner or a therapist, but when she landed in her current career path, it was the perfect combination between the two jobs! She absolutely loves what she does and often becomes friends with her clients. I got to see this helpful spirit first-hand. When I met up with Heather to interview her, I walked away from our meeting with numerous helpful tips on parenting, mindful perspective-shifting and even some

meaningful books to check out!

Roberto Sr. is Peruvian, of European descent. He was born in Brazil, and grew up in Latin America; he is fluent in Spanish. When he was a bit older, his family moved to Michigan. After obtaining his bachelors degree from University of Michigan, he went on to obtain his masters at MIT and his law degree from Harvard. He is now a patent attorney in the DC office Fish and Richardson, P.C.

The couple’s older son, Roberto David, attends the Landon School in Bethesda, MD. His younger brother, Cesar Alexander, is finishing up at the Montessori School of McLean, and will start at The Potomac School, in McLean, in the fall. The brothers love tennis and have played for years. Roberto Jr. plays competitively and is nationally ranked! Cesar also loves baseball and golf. In addition, both boys play the piano and the trumpet.

Rounding out the family are two Maine coon kittens, Rocky and Meena. Maine coons grow to be quite large (40 in and 18+lbs) and are known to be friendly, very playful and even dog-like in behavior, playing fetch and greeting their owners at the door. These two tiny “gentle giants” are a great compromise for the family, allowing them an interactive pet that doesn't trigger their dog allergies.

Heather and Roberto Sr. are “foodies” and enjoy exploring our region's restaurants. When not delighting in the delicacies this area has to offer, Heather is an avid fitness and nutrition enthusiast. She considers herself an “Equinox junkie” and particularly enjoys weight training along with some light running. She loves to garden and tends to her English garden on their property. She also enjoys decorating her home - often through antiquing. When they purchased the house, Heather had a vision that was influenced by her time in Europe. She spent the first few years living in the house with empty rooms – gradually gathering

furniture, art and inspiration that now fills her house. The garden also has evolved over time – adding plants and items such as a limestone fountain and pea gravel to create different “rooms” throughout the yard.

Roberto Sr.’s hobby is acquiring movie-grade costumes for Halloween, particularly the creepy ones. So as you can probably imagine, the family goes all out for Halloween, especially because it coincides with Roberto Sr.’s birthday!

When it comes to travel, the family takes an annual trip to Bethany Beach. Their entire extended family comes with them so they can all spend time together. They love the outdoors and their favorite family trip to date was a summer vacation to Beaver Creek, Colorado, a couple of years ago. While there, they zip-lined, a scary “first” for Heather, and hiked through the mountains to catch some gorgeous views.

Back in McLean, the Devoto family enjoys their English garden and epic Halloween parties at their home in Reid’s Grove. They moved there from Arlington in 2009 because they loved the beautiful mature trees and wildlife in McLean, while still being close to the city. Heather elaborates, “I grew up in Arlington and my husband’s family lives in Michigan, so McLean was a compromise between the city and

CUPCAKES anyone?

So many kids and teenagers do amazing things in our neighborhood! This month, we introduce Finley Sheers, a student at Churchill Road Elementary School, and a McLean resident who decided to take up baking. This is how her story goes:

Finley Sheers, an 11-year-old baker, has taken the baking world by storm with her incredible talent and passion for creating delicious treats. During the COVID pandemic, Finley taught herself how to bake, and her hard work and dedication have paid off in ways she could never have imagined.

Finley’s baking skills led her to compete on the Food Network’s Kids Baking Championship, where she impressed judges and gained thousands of followers on Instagram. Since then, she has started her own small business, selling her baked goods to local fans and receiving 2-3 orders a week.

In addition to her success on the Food Network, Finley has also competed in the largest cake show competition on the East Coast, the National Capitol Area Cake Show. Unbelievably, our hometown hero placed first in all four of the categories in which she competed, and was awarded first place in the youth category! Her participation in the competition was featured on a new Food Network show Bake it ‘Til You Make You Make It during which she placed first in the 'Fan Favorite' cupcake taste challenge, beating several professional bakers and chefs.

Not only is Finley an incredibly talented baker, she also uses her skills to give back to her community. She has helped raise over $1,000 for the Arthritis Foundation by donating her cakes to the Arthritis Gala auction, as well as baking cookies for auctions in support of her little sister, who has Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis.

Despite her busy schedule, Finley still manages to balance her time between school, baking orders, playing soccer and volleyball, practicing piano and hanging out with friends and family. She truly is an inspiration for those with a passion they want to pursue.

To keep up with Finley’s latest baking creations, you can follow her on Instagram @finleybakes and place orders through her email at finleybakes@gmail.com. Her talent and dedication are sure to take her far in the baking world, and we can’t wait to see what she accomplishes next!

Nutrition Tips from a Pediatrician Mom

As we head back into the outdoors during the spring and summer seasons with longer and warmer days, this can be an excellent time for families to work on establishing healthy eating habits.

5 Nutrition Tips from a Pediatrician Mom to kickstart your child's health journey:

Vary food groups

Make an effort to have a variety of food groups in meals/snacks: 3-4 for meals and 2-3 for snacks. The food groups are fruits and vegetables, proteins (beef, poultry, fish, eggs, beans, and soy), grains, dairy, and healthy fats.

Add color to your plate

The Dietary Guidelines for Americans (DGA) encourage kids to eat five cups of fruits and vegetables daily. Why? Fruits and vegetables are excellent sources of nutrients and fiber and promote fullness after meals. Try to serve a fruit or vegetable at every meal and snack. Even if your child doesn't eat them at first,

frequent exposure to goal foods is the first step toward establishing new eating patterns.

Make a schedule for meals and snacks

Children thrive when there are routines around mealtime and snacks, especially if the food is nutritious, filling, and spaced throughout the day. Your child will be better able to regulate their appetite and eating when on a schedule. A toddler should have a meal or snack every 2-3 hours during the day (due to their tiny tummies), and a school-age child should have a meal plan with a 3-4 hour window between meals and snacks.

Plan for sweets

Sweets and sugar are everywhere! As a parent, it almost seems like we are going from one sugary holiday to the next (Halloween, winter holidays, Valentine's Day, Easter, etc.). Therefore, having a weekly plan for sweets is helpful, especially considering special occasions like birthday parties and

other celebrations. Knowing what the recommended sugar intake is as a helpful starting point. According to the DGA, children under two should not eat foods with added sugar. The recommendation for older kids (2+) is 10% of the overall diet, which ends up being about six teaspoons (24 grams) per day or 1-2 small sweet treats daily.

Have family meals

Evidence of the importance of family meals to your growing family is overwhelming; impacting their growth, development, behavior, eating habits, grades, social adjustment, and body size. The weekdays can become very busy between parents' work schedules and children's activities, so pick a couple of days during the week and weekend where you can all sit together and enjoy a meal - even if it's takeout. Your child will learn to explore food, try new recipes, and work on communication, but most importantly, feel your love and attention.

How to Relax When Traveling with Children

The sun slowly rises, warming the room. I can hear the waves lapping against the shore. The smell of salt air fills my nose and lungs as I breathe deeply. I open my weary eyes to the surprising color of pastels. A soft blue wall with three white picture frames and blush mats, all showcasing different seashell drawings, takes shape in front of me. White seagulls soar past in the soft blue sky outside the French doors that lead to the wooden balcony on my left. Their hungry squawks whistle from their beaks. As a city dweller, waking up at the beach is one of the most peaceful feelings.

“OOF!” I’m abruptly jarred as a small knee slams into my gut. My son jumps on me as though I offer the same rebounding fun as his trampoline. I hear the shrills and giggles coming from my daughter’s mouth as her feet swiftly pitter and patter closer to my room. “It’s time to get up,” they excitedly shout. Before my daughter breaches

the doorway, I begin my mental to-do list that will grow and rearrange itself throughout the day, encompassing all the things necessary to keep my children safe and happy. The absence of the familiar environment and routine of your own home coupled with the increased risk presented by proximity to pools and the ocean can be overwhelming. Ah, family vacation. When thinking about a family getaway as the mother of two young children, 'relaxing' certainly isn’t the first word that comes to mind. Brush their teeth and hair. Get them dressed. Feed them enough to ensure they have energy for a busy day, but not so much that they get sick while splashing about. Apply sunscreen, again, and again. Beach toys. Sunglasses. Hats. Snacks. Make sure they stay hydrated. Keep them away from the side of the pool without floaties. Don’t let a wave crash on their heads. Catch them before they eat the sand. Stop for potty breaks. Watch out for runners and bikers. Stranger, danger.

How do I relax and allow myself to enjoy vacation while ensuring that they are safe and having fun as well? It seems an impossible feat.

I suddenly remember that I don’t have to cook breakfast this morning. Breakfast will be served on the beautiful deck by the pool, and it’s free because I booked the resort through my travel advisor. Hooray! One item off my todo list. Wait. I don’t have to reapply sunscreen because the kids will be at Koko Kids today, the incredible club designed specifically for them and their peers, and the staff will reapply the sunscreen. Another worry instantly eliminated. I don’t have to pack any toys or snacks because Koko Kids provides those. Check. going to have fun, make new friends, and be perfectly safe. A full-blown smile stretches across my face. I chose a resort with a kids’ club.

This is what vacation is like at Eden Roc Cap Cana and many other resorts that share the philosophy that family holiday should truly be a vacation for all, not just the children. Kids’ clubs gained popularity in Europe across the past two decades as families realized they want to have children but also continue to go on luxury trips and relax. Thus, the kids’ club was born, and the concept is now spreading like wildfire amongst major hotel brands all over the world. A safe, sanitary space filled with activities, friends, and fun for young guests to enjoy. There are a variety of types of kids’ clubs; drop off clubs where you can leave your children for a full or half day; ecological clubs that operate more like classrooms to teach your children about the importance of our environment and caring for our surroundings; adventure clubs that plan excursions such as kayaking, tennis lessons, or wildlife scavenger hunts. Most importantly, while your children are learning and playing, you get much needed time to yourself.

If you like the sound of this, reach out to me and we can discuss what types of vacations you enjoy, and which resorts and kids’ clubs would be best suited to meet the needs of your family. Having access to someone with extensive knowledge of kid’s clubs is just one of the many perks of using a travel advisor. I’m also able to add special VIP perks at our partner hotels, including a complimentary room upgrade, free daily breakfast, $100 credit to use towards food or beverage, early check-in/late check-out, free wi-fi, and more. I can plan excursions if you want to take a day trip, go out on a boat, enjoy a private tour, see your destination via helicopter or hot air balloon, etc. You get access to all of this when booking your luxury hotel with me, and I also have the resources to plan a custom itinerary anywhere in the world.

The best part is that booking through me will never cost more than booking your hotel(s) directly online. Contact me so we can plan your next vacation or hotel stay. If you’re a parent, let’s find one with a kids’ club so you can have some down time to relax while your kids have the time of their lives!

Getting Started with the RIGHT REMODELING PARTNER

As remodelers, we know that when it comes to a project you’ve been considering, getting started can feel like the hardest part. That’s okay! First steps usually are. Thankfully, you won’t be taking them alone. The first step toward your successful remodeling project and great client experience is finding the right fit in a renovation partner.

Unsurprisingly, that first step is also the most important. Your overall experience

from design through completion and beyond is directly related to the person and company with whom you choose to partner. We’ve heard enough stories to know that not every contractor is suited for every project. The key to this approach is finding the right team based on your scope of work, timeline, budget, and appetite for risk.

First and foremost, it’s important that the sophistication of the contractor matches the complexity and scope of

your project. Additions, whole-house renovations, kitchens, and primary baths are complicated. For these kinds of projects, consider how involved you want to be in the day-to-day logistics. Larger projects require management of the many onsite workers and responsibility for minimizing impact on your neighbors. Ask yourself what type of care and support you’ll look for during the remodel as well as a year or two down the road.

COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT 20 | April 2023 © Best Version Media

Start by calling a company known for the work you’re looking to do at your home. Describe your project and communicate your priorities for the remodel. Then, expect a 15 to 30-minute chat by phone where you can go into greater detail about your project and budget goals. This brief chat allows both you and your potential partner to properly prepare for a first meeting in your home.

Before the in-home consultation, consider creating a Needs, Wants, Someday list. What projects need to be done? What would you want to have done if there’s money left in the budget? And what are dream projects for someday in the future? Focus on the challenges you’re experiencing, not the solutions. Fully understanding your home and expectations for it helps to better inform that first meeting.

Plan to give the in-home consultation 60 to 90 minutes of your undivided attention. This should give you ample time to discuss project and process, ask your toughest questions, and share your ideas and inspirations from magazines and sites like Houzz. The goal of this first meeting is for you to get the answers you need in order to evaluate the company and person you’re considering. This straightforward approach encourages a collaborative partnership designed to benefit all involved.

You and your home deserve the best remodeling experience possible and choosing the right fit in a renovation partner makes every step count.

DIVERSEartLANGLEY: What is Your American Story?

The second annual DIVERSEartLANGLEY exhibition was held at Langley High School on February 27, and featured over 80 submissions from Langley and Cooper students. A variety of photographs, paintings, and sketches, all echoing the main theme, were on display by the PTSA. This year’s theme was “What is your American Story?”

The driving question allowed for a multitude of different art pieces for submission. Not one American story is the same as the other, and this occurrence was clearly represented in the art, from photographs of domestic scenes to colorful displays of mixed media. It was soon clear that the intention was to allow such diverse art (and stories) to flourish. “The organizer’s hope was that people would see things that were different about the people that participated but

also hopefully some commonalities,” said William Farnsworth, Langley Studio Art Teacher.

Lauren Rummler, a Langely junior and an AP Art Student, submitted her painting of the Dulles Airport. Painted in bright, bold strokes, it features a ubiquitous airport background with a distinct vibrance in the scenery. Rummler’s painting is part of her AP Art Portfolio she is planning to submit to the College Board for judging. “My piece is about Dulles Airport and it centers around America because this airport leads us to the capital of the United States. The colors I portrayed in my piece really showcase the bright horizons of America and our growth. The multiple colors show how different people can come to DC and they can make it their home,” Rummler said.

Other pieces of artwork also reflect the immigrant stories that many Americans

bring to the country. Two art pieces, one of a man wearing traditional Chinese clothing with his hair cut short was featured in the exhibition. The poppies that surrounded his face were a reference to China’s history of the Opium war and a remembrance of immigrant identity. The other is a phone screen of two women contained inside and Winnie the Pooh perched on top of it, reflecting the topic of Chinese Censorship and contrasting it to the general freedom that Americans enjoy. Attendees of the art show were invited to vote for the three pieces of art that spoke to them the most with regards to the theme.

Congratulations to this year’s winners: 1st Prize to Shoshana Marcus for Human; 2nd Prize to Katherine Chen for Swirl; and 3rd Prize to Zachary Ulman for My Archive.

Social4Good Makes Dreams Come True

In February, S4G hosted a heartwarming project to aid the efforts of SOHO. Through financial and in-kind donations, S4G members supported SOHO's goal to provide every participant with a personalized Space of Her Own that encourages creativity, conveys a sense of value, and serves as a lasting reminder of her circle of support and care. Each of the 36 preteen girls were provided a kit that included mattress pads, pillows, throw blankets, and underbed storage; as well as cleaning products for their families. Due to the generosity of S4G members, funds were given to each girls' mentor to choose bedding that would make their room transformations more personalized.

Space of Her Own, Inc. (SOHO), spaceofherown.org, is an award-winning 501c3 charitable organization committed

to helping girls make good choices, live healthfully, communicate openly, progress academically, and give back to others in order to lead fulfilling lives. Two programs for 5th graders operate from Alexandria, VA, supporting a total of 25 girls; a new program was recently started in Arlington, supporting 11 girls. The SOHO Club provides activities and services to SOHO girls and their mentors throughout their middle school years, promoting long-term mentoring relationships and ongoing learning opportunities.

At the social event hosted by a member on February 28th, members helped package donations and learned more about SOHO's award-winning program.

"At SOHO, we encourage girls to dream, learn, and grow as they engage in weekly activities in visual arts, carpentry, interior design and STEM. Our engaging life skill-building activities,

and each girl's relationship with her mentor, foster strength, resilience, and confidence—helping our girls thrive. Thank you to Social4Good members for generously supporting this years' thirty-six space transformations, and for sharing our belief that we are stronger as a community when we work together to support the lives of those who need us most."

S4G is an all-volunteer, grassroots organization that brings together engaged women who want to meet new people and support the organizations that make our community strong. Each month, this column will highlight S4G’s monthly project to raise awareness on critical needs in our community and local nonprofits making a difference. BOTOX

Way back in the 1820s, Justinus Kerner - a German poet, physician, and medical writer, was trying to figure out why a batch of blood sausages ended up poisoning several dozen Germans. Turns out, there was a toxin in the meat that caused their deaths. Kerner named his discovery “botulism” from the Latin root botulus, meaning sausage.

At the beginning of World War II, the U.S. began researching biological weapons from a toxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. According to the International Journal of Dermatology, one plan involved using Chinese prostitutes to slip tiny toxic pills of botulinum toxin into the food and drinks of high-ranking Japanese officers. Funny enough that when the capsules were sent to China, and tested again – on stray donkeys – the whole program was abandoned – as the donkeys survived.

In the 1960s, Alan Scott, an ophthalmologist in San Francisco, started research on the treatment of strabismus by injecting botulinum as an alternative to surgery. Eventually in 1979, a specific type of the toxin was approved by the FDA for certain use in humans.

It took about 8 years, in 1987, until the Canadian ophthalmologist Jean Carruthers noticed that after injecting botulinum toxin for the treatment of blepharospasm, frown lines also known as worry lines would disappear. As she described it during her presentation at IMCAS Paris 2022 “The Aha moment”. She shared this observation with her dermatologist husband, Alastair Carruthers, and the couple published the first report on botulinum toxin application for cosmetic purposes in 1996.

In 1991, this ‘‘orphan medicine’’ was bought by the Allergan company and was named Botox. Since then botulinum toxin

Two years later, a slightly different formulation was launched by a British company, named Dysport, derived from dystonia (involuntary muscle contraction). Since then, more brands have been introduced to the market such as Jeuveau, Xeomin and the new kid on the block Daxxify, each with slightly different characteristics.

From food poisoning to beauty COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT
Dr. Maryam Khavandi and Jean Carruthers at IMCAS Paris 2022 "The Aha Moment". - neuromuscular blocking agent, known by its first name “Botox” has been used for medical and cosmetic purposes for years.
In cosmetic procedures, tiny amounts of botulinum toxin are injected in various areas of the face, and prevents and

treats dynamic wrinkles in the forehead, glabella, and crow’s feet (wrinkles around the eyes). The prevention characteristic of this toxin has led to the generation Z trend of getting “botulinum toxin” earlier, now in their 20s. botulinum toxin remains a go-to treatment for those wishing to minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and according to plasticsurgery.org, botulinum toxin is the #1 most popular minimally-invasive cosmetic procedure in the United States, with over 4 million people partaking in the treatment in 2020.

This tiny dose of botulinum toxin acts by temporarily relaxing the target muscles depending on the indication. Botulinum toxin has been approved by the FDA for more than 100 medical and cosmetic indications. To name a few, it can help with facial wrinkles, depression or sweaty underarms (hyperhidrosis), migraines, lazy eyes, neck spasms and overactive bladder. Used creatively, it can also lift the brows, turn up lip corners, and subtly lift the lips, slim the jawline and create a V shape - narrower and more feminine appearance.

BEAUTY IS PAIN - or better described, beauty is a quick office visit with no down time that can be achieved in as little as a single 15- to 30-minute treatment. The pain is however a very well tolerated procedure through small injection of products with tiny insulin needles. Most injectors will apply a topical numbing agent to sweeten the deal. Of course, not all patients require it, and some forgo it to speed up the treatment time.

RULE OF 3 - The expected results are achieved with just one treatment session starting at day three and fully taking part after three weeks. It is also expected to last about three to four months. Hence the rule of 3 (3 days, 3 weeks, 3 months).

THE RISK - It can lead to bruising and temporary swelling of the injection site, mild headache and flu-like symptoms and, in more severe and less common cases, temporary eyelid drooping.

BEAUTY IS OBSESSION - Is botulinum toxin injection addictive? Yes and no! It all depends on your cosmetic goals. The muscles don’t get dependence to the medication, but your beauty might.

To sum it up, botulinum toxin injection is a safe, FDA approved, effective, and as quick as can be.
