ccessing higher education has become increasingly challenging, especially for students from underrepresented and low-income backgrounds. Rising tuition costs, the burden of part-time or full-time work, and other life responsibilities can make earning a degree feel out of reach. However, in the heart of Great Falls, a dedicated group of volunteers is breaking down these barriers and transforming lives through the power of education.

For over four decades, The Women's Club of Great Falls Scholarship Fund has been a beacon of support for students pursuing higher education. Through its annual scholarships, the organization provides critical financial assistance, allowing students to focus on their studies without the overwhelming stress of mounting educational costs. Scholarships are awarded based on merit, financial need, and a demonstrated commitment to academic and personal growth.

The Women's Club of Great Falls Scholarship Fund was founded on September 15, 1982, by Doris Fisher Irwin as an extension of the Women’s Club of Great Falls. The initiative was rooted in the Club’s mission to support local students by providing financial aid to those who might not otherwise have the opportunity to attend college.

The Fund has no formal membership; instead, its Executive Board is composed of Women’s Club members who are appointed annually to oversee its operations. These dedicated women handle all administrative tasks, manage fundraising, and select scholarship recipients. The Scholarship Fund remains the Club’s major service project, providing annual awards to students pursuing higher education.

In recognition of her extraordinary contributions, the Women’s Club of Great Falls Executive Board awarded a Life Membership to club founder and first president Doris Fisher Irwin in August 1983. Doris was instrumental in launching the club and dedicated thousands of hours to its success. She played a key role in organizing the 1980 Ballet Gala, which provided the initial funding for the Scholarship Fund, and remained committed to ensuring its long-term impact.

As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, the Scholarship Fund relies on fundraising initiatives and community support to provide annual scholarships. A dedicated board of Great Falls residents plays a crucial role in organizing events, securing funding, and selecting scholarship recipients. Under the leadership of President Lindsay Harper, the current board includes Vice President Suzanne Charleston, Director of Fundraising Jackie Harding, Secretary Lauryn Nashi, Treasurer Toria Scotto, Director of Events Sumaira Malik, Director of Scholarships Missy Perkins, Director of Publicity Connie Colabatistto, and Director of Grants Erin Kiblawi.

Looking ahead, the Scholarship Fund aims to expand its reach and impact. One of its key initiatives from 2024 includes a $10,000 scholarship for the George Mason University Mason LIFE Program, which supports students with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Additionally, the board has committed to extending funding for Early Identification Program (EIP) students, ensuring continued financial support throughout their journeys, as firstgeneration college students.

The success of the Scholarship Fund is a direct reflection of the generosity and engagement of the Great Falls community. Whether

LINDSAY HARPER, A PASSIONATE LEADER

At the heart of this incredible organization is Lindsay Harper, a passionate advocate for student success and the current president of the Scholarship Fund. Under her leadership, the fund continues to grow, ensuring that financial barriers do not stand in the way of bright futures.

In addition to serving as president, she also acts as the liaison to the Women’s Club of Great Falls, strengthening collaboration between the two organizations. "The Scholarship Fund was built on the generosity and dedication of the women in our community who believed in saying 'yes' to education," Lindsay shares. "We continue that legacy by supporting students who dare to pursue their dreams."

Born in Reston, Lindsay attended Hunter Mill Country Day School and grew up in Chantilly. She went on to earn a Bachelor of

Business Administration degree from James Madison University, majoring in Hospitality and Tourism Management with a minor in Spanish.

After graduation, Lindsay began her career at the Army Navy Country Club in Arlington, where she specialized in catering sales and event planning/management. Her professional journey then took her to Huntsville, Alabama, where she moved with her fiancé, now husband, Adam. There, she transitioned into public relations and marketing, first working in economic development before shifting to commercial real estate. In this role, she played a key part in bringing major brands such as Whole Foods Market, Lululemon, and Orangetheory Fitness to a growing small town. Following this chapter in her career, Lindsay chose to focus on raising her family. She and Adam returned to Virginia, settling in Great Falls in June 2021. They are proud parents to three children— TJ, almost 13, Emma, 10, and Michael, almost 8—as well as their energetic 1 1/3 -year-old Boxer, Jax.

Beyond her leadership in the Scholarship Fund, Lindsay is a dedicated volunteer and community leader. She serves as the Vice President of Communications for the Great Falls Elementary PTA, leads a Girl Scout troop, and coaches youth volleyball. Recently, she has also started working on an event series and community engagement initiatives for Great Falls Physical Therapy. Her passion for service and involvement is unmatched—she jokingly admits that if you ask her husband, she does too much! But for Lindsay, saying "yes" to community service is a way of life. She thrives on bringing people together, fostering growth and development, and championing education, sports, music, and the arts.

Lindsay Harper embodies the spirit of dedication and leadership. Whether advocating for students, coaching young athletes, or organizing community events, she is a driving force in making Great Falls a better place for all. Her belief in progress and possibilities continues to inspire those around her, and her impact on the community is undeniable.

Mark your calendars for Saturday, May 3rd, at Riverbend Club in Great Falls as we host our annual spring fundraiser—a festive Kentucky Derby Day event for the second year in a row!

Medical-Grade Over-the-Counter Skincare: What’s the Difference?

Not all skincare is created equal. If you’ve ever wondered medical-grade skincare is worth the investment or if over-the-counter (OTC) products can deliver similar results, the key di erences come down to potency, formulation, and clinical testing.

Medical-grade skincare is backed by science, formulated with higher concentrations of active ingredients like retinoids, growth factors, hyaluronic acid, and stabilized vitamin C. These products penetrate deeper, targeting skin concerns at the cellular level for real, long-term results. Unlike OTC products, they undergo rigorous clinical testing to ensure e icacy.

On the other hand, department store skincare often prioritizes

luxurious packaging and marketing over potency. While they may feel nice and provide temporary hydration, they typically contain lower concentrations of active ingredients—meaning they’re less e ective for treating issues like hyperpigmentation, fine lines, and acne.

If you’re serious about skin transformation, medical-grade skincare is a game-changer. A professional consultation ensures you get products that actually deliver results

Pro Tip: My favorite brands combine medical-grade e icacy with botanical ingredients and advanced skincare innovations, o ering the best of both worlds for truly transformative, professionalgrade skincare.

A Night of Hope: The Rahman Foundation & OSF Unite for Vulnerable Children

Naureen and Naveed Rahman, founders of The Rahman Foundation (in honor of their late parents, Dr. Aquilur and Rukhsana Rahman), joined forces with the Orphaned Starfish Foundation (OSF) and hosted the Inaugural D.C. Gala on Saturday, February 1st, 2025. OSF began operations in 2001, led by founder Andy Stein. guests across the DMV to share in their quest to protect vulnerable children. With special performances from the “Elphaba” of Broadway’s “Wicked” and “Jagged Little Pill” shows, Laurel Harris, guest appearances from Gold Olympic medalists Thea LaFond, art installations from “If These Walls Could Talk” by artist Justin Garcia, guests enjoyed a memorable evening with a dinner spread by the local Bamian Restaurant and danced to the tunes spun by DJ Vishal Dwivedi (aka DJ Vicious).
