DEAR RESIDENTS In McLean, VA (you know, the 22101 zone), I think I’m trying to make it a thing like 90210; love and friendship aren't just words; they're like the real deal. So, one day, I went to my neighbor's house party, where I ended up catching up with Emmy (our feature story), a local travel legend who's been in DC forever but is relatively new to McLean. She spilled the beans on her history and the solid friendships she's built over the years through her travel agency. Our chat went from small talk to heart-to-heart real quick. Turns out, McLean isn't just about fancy houses. It's about the people and their great energy. Emmy's stories got me thinking—in this crazy-fast world, the simple joy of hanging out with friends is something else. In McLean, love and friendship aren't just behind closed doors. It's in the parks, at block parties, and even in the cozy coffee spots. You can literally feel the connection. It's not just a place with a zip code; it's where hearts sync up and friendships bloom. Social4Good Brings Holiday Cheer to Babies, Teens and Families By SHARON GRACE Photos by MARY STAHL AND FAITH BOETTGER

In December, S4G aimed to spread more holiday cheer by supporting two nonprofit partners - a program project with LINK, and a volunteer opportunity with Committee for Helping Others. LINK is all-volunteer non-profit organization that has been serving the community for more than 51 years, providing emergency food and financial assistance to qualified people in need. Supported primarily by donations of food and funds, LINK is comprised of dedicated churches, organizations, and individuals serving the Herndon, Sterling, and Ashburn, Virginia communities. “Prior to the pandemic, LINK delivered to approximately 75 homes each month. In November, we delivered to 391 homes,” noted Lisa Lombardozzi, LINK President & Food Committee Chair. “Along with

this increasing need, we've seen a decline in donations as more people are working remotely. Businesses that would typically host food drives have dwindled to just a handful. It is more important now than ever, to volunteer where your heart leads you, whether that is food, animals, or people. The time you give, even just an hour, means a lot to all of us!” A core program of LINK is its holiday program that provides each family with food for 3 - 5 days and, when available, coats and toys. S4G set a goal for their support at 100 gifts for newborns - two year olds, and 110 $25 Walmart gift cards. They exceeded it with donations of more than 200 toys and 120 gift cards for teens to choose their own special present. Overall, the LINK holiday program in 2023 was a big success: more than 4,700 individuals in nearly 850 families received food, grocery gift cards, and toys to celebrate the holidays. S4G's other December work involved supporting the Committee for Helping Others (CHO) Christmas Store. CHO is an all-volunteer organization that was organized in 1969 by a group of concerned churches and individuals in the Vienna, Oakton, Dunn Loring, and Merrifield area to provide assistance to those in need of goods and services they were unable to provide for themselves or obtain from government social service organizations.

Families identified by neighborhood schools and organizations were invited to the CHO Christmas Store which opened December 9 at Vienna Presbyterian Church. The day before volunteers worked to organize all the donations and set up the space. S4G members logged more than 50 volunteer hours setting up and staffing the Christmas Store and gathered over $2,200 in new and used coats and children's clothing. S4G efforts were supported by Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints - Tysons Ward, whose members donated coats and clothing for CHO's Christmas Store and gift cards for LINK's teenagers. S4G members gathered for their own holiday cheer and were kindly hosted by Bear Branch Tavern on December 12. They closed out the year on a high note with strong support for two local organizations that improve the lives of community members not only during the holidays but also all year long. S4G is an all-volunteer, grassroots organization that brings together engaged women who want to meet new people and support the organizations that make our community strong. Each month, this column will highlight S4G's monthly project to raise awareness on critical needs in our community and local nonprofits making a difference. “Travel has a remarkable way of bridging the gaps between people from different walks of life, cultures, and backgrounds. It creates opportunities for shared experiences, helping us understand each other better and form genuine connections. Whether it's two people becoming friends while watching a beautiful sunset in a foreign land, or individuals embracing a new culture, travel has this special power to break down barriers and build empathy.” These thoughtful words belong to McLean’s own, Emmy Hoffmann. You may recognize Emmy from some of her own articles about her business, Luxe Traveler Club. I was personally excited to learn more about her life and worldview in this feature article after enjoying her tips from previous issues. Her biggest hobby is travel, which is why she became a travel advisor. Emmy’s love of travel began during her childhood. Both of her parents grew up in Donora, Pennsylvania, yet they ended up moving a fair amount with her dad’s job after they got married. His career eventually moved them to Paris and then later to London. She spent a lot of time in both of those cities and those experiences, along with a Cross Cultural Studies Program in

Barbados, changed her life and outlook on travel. The contrasting cultures, languages, and lifestyles she experienced broadened her understanding of the world and instilled a deep appreciation for diverse and enriching travel experiences. Witnessing the art, history, and culinary delights unique to each city fueled her passion for exploration and discovery. The exposure to different ways of life imprinted in her a sense of curiosity and openness towards new destinations, encouraging her to seek out authentic and immersive travel experiences wherever she goes. This has shaped her outlook on travel as a means of not only discovering new places, but also understanding and connecting with the people and cultures that make each destination unique. Emmy attended the University of Louisville and then worked in Business Management Consulting for 18 years prior to launching her career as a luxury travel advisor. She herself had used a travel advisor for 15 years and was actually a client of Luxe Traveler Club prior to working for them! She emphasizes, “I think it’s the best story, as I can absolutely vouch for the quality of the company.” Alisa, the founder of Luxe Traveler Club, was Emmy’s travel advisor. After using a company based in London

their 10 year wedding anniversary this June. The two met at a bar in DC on a Sunday afternoon watching a football game that included Matt’s team, The Patriots vs. Emmy’s team, The Steelers. She muses, “Every single memory with him is the best. He is the love of my life and my rock. He is the most incredible man and I feel like I hit the husband lottery.” And yes, they still root for their respective teams. The couple have two children: Ada age 4, and Joey age 5, and their favorite things are currently Disney Princesses and Hot Wheels. They both love music and enjoy taking music lessons at Expressions Academy in McLean. Joey wants to start tennis lessons this Spring, and Ada will take her first dance class at Dance Academy of Virginia next week. The siblings are only 16 months apart in age, and they’re best buddies. A fun fact: “Joey, Matt, and I are all Aquarius zodiac signs and Ada is a Gemini, which is the sign we’re most compatible with. We have a fun and fantastic family dynamic, and we all get along superbly.” Rounding out the family is their nine year old pitmix dog, Ollie.

for 15 years, she decided that she wanted to start investing in small, local businesses, and she especially loved that Alisa’s was woman-owned. Emmy explains, “Alisa planned a few fabulous trips for me, and I was impressed with the quality of work and her global hotel knowledge. I started to realize that I could pair my consulting experience with my travel passion. Understanding what people want from a vacation is very similar to understanding what executives need to better manage their businesses. Whether for a vacation or in a professional context, it involves recognizing their preferences, motivations, and priorities to effectively meet their expectations.” Her experience was directly transferrable, and it was a very easy transition for her into the travel industry. She had always previously joked that the only reason she worked was to pay for her travel habit. Now she's been able to pair her deep love of travel with her extensive knowledge of consulting to understand what people need from both her and their travel experience. Diving a little deeper into her life at home, Emmy and her husband, Matt, have been together for 14 years and will celebrate

The one ironic quirk of the family is that Matt is actually a homebody and doesn’t like to travel. Emmy laughs “It’s so funny, because I would travel 365 days a year if I could, but he would much rather be home and in his daily routine.” She says their biggest argument is always about who gets to keep the kids when Emmy travels, because she wants to take them on her trips to show them the world, and he wants them to stay home with him and in their routines. He loves spending quality time with them on the weekends and prefers that to what he considers stressful travel. He does, however, enjoy a good stay-cation! That being said, they travel all over the world! Emmy has been to 6 continents, 20 countries, and 32 US states thus far. She smiles, “I like to put new dots on the map.” In 2023, she added Bhutan, Nepal, San Miguel de Allende, and Dominican Republic to the map and will revisit London, Nashville, Boston, and then stay at the Mandarin Oriental hotels in Barcelona and Madrid all by this April. “Joey got his passport when he was just two months old and took his first international trip to England and Ireland when he was 3 months old. Ada’s first international trip was to London, Italy, and Greece. They’re both frequent fliers and are incredible travel buddies. They’ve mastered navigating airports and I always

get comments from strangers about how well behaved they are on airplanes. They’re pros.” When asked about the kids’ favorite trip, she exclaims that they are “beach junkies” and both particularly love the Ritz Carlton Grand Cayman and Tortuga Bay. In 2022, the family and sweet pup moved from Georgetown to Dolley Madison Estates, which is combined with Clearview Manor and Evermay. They wanted more outdoor space for the children, and were craving a stronger sense of community. Luckily, they found that supportive community quickly! “The day we arrived with the moving truck, neighbors came to greet us; some brought baked goods, and one family immediately offered to have our children over to play so we could focus on unpacking and getting settled. It was like a dream come true. Lots of our neighbors have young children as well, so Joey and Ada made fast friends and we’ve built such a strong little network during our short time here.” Speaking of meeting new friends, Emmy relishes meeting random strangers on a trip. “While I was in Bhutan, I was eating lunch alone at a restaurant when a man came to introduce himself to me. I explained that I was a travel advisor and he said that he was with a group of travel professionals as well. It turns out that I know their company and my direct partner, whom I had never met in the US, was there. She and I were able to meet, chat about our shared experiences, and become fast friends. She’s from Texas but is planning to move to DC this year and I’m trying hard to recruit her to McLean.” Emmy is quick to give out her Instagram, phone number, or email to folks she meets when traveling, then she works to keep those relationships alive. She expounds, “I believe that when you meet someone in another country, you’re given a real opportunity to learn more about their experiences, culture, and way of life, and it would be a wasted opportunity to let that pass.” Emmy met the women featured with her on the cover with because Stephanie posted on Instagram that she was looking for recommendations for a trip she was planning to St. Tropez. Emmy reached out to Stephanie on Instagram to let her know that she's a luxury travel advisor and could help make it a dream trip. The two met for lunch to discuss the details and Emmy put lots of passion into building an incredible trip for her. Through the process, the women became dear friends. Then like a domino effect, with the click of a button, one of Stephanie’s friends reached

out and had Emmy help with a trip she and her husband were taking to Portugal. Casey, also on the cover, is the sister-in-law of that client and Emmy is looking forward to planning her upcoming 10 year anniversary trip. Ashley is Stephanie’s neighbor and was introduced to Emmy during one of their first girls’ nights. Emmy met this entire group of likeminded travel enthusiasts purely through her job… “and they’ve become one of my closest friend groups. None of this would have happened without travel. It forges connections and builds bonds.” Popular misconception, Luxe Traveler Club isn’t actually a club. There’s no initiation fee or annual fees. It just reflects a group of likeminded individuals that are passionate about travel. Emmy reminisces that one of her favorite moments with the group of girls on the cover was a night that that they all went to Stephanie’s house for dinner and drinks. They decided to make

it a pajama party. They all showed up in pajamas, ate take-out, drank wine, talked endlessly, watched Clueless, and Ashley did a tarot card reading for everyone. Emmy recollects “It was such a special night, so when we did the photoshoot for the cover at the fabulous Pendry DC Wharf, we all brought pajamas and changed into them and hung out in the room after the shoot - even taking some hilarious bathtub photos in our pajamas.” Emmy maintains that through her job, she is able to see more of the world and her children are fortunate to join her on many trips, giving them a global view and ensuring that they have lots of quality time together. She finishes by saying, “Exploring new destinations and interacting with locals allow individuals to gain a deeper appreciation for diversity and to develop a more profound sense of global citizenship. Ultimately, travel not only connects people physically but also emotionally and intellectually.” With McLean being such a diverse community of many travel enthusiasts, Emmy is probably someone you want to have on speed-dial.

Furniture Rescue in Fairfax, Virginia is the best shop you’ve never heard of. The proprietors, Joni and Dave Foerter, have been in business for over 17 years, and have curated a fantastic inventory of gently loved vintage and antique furniture. The warehouse is a “working shop” where customers can browse over 6,000 square feet of furniture and decor items for sale AND see the creative team at work repairing, refinishing, painting, modifying, and upholstering furniture - all in real time. Joni and Dave, the Furniture Rescuers, impart their expertise and confidence to their customers who are looking for a new pre-loved piece of furniture or home decor. The business, often referred to as ‘the best kept secret’ for local vintage furniture sales, repairs, and makeovers, has been around for almost two decades. Joni and Dave have always loved exploring vintage furniture, furniture flipping, wood working, furniture building, refinishing and restoration. Eventually, as their children were becoming teenagers, Joni was ready to pivot her skill and passion into a small business start up . Transitioning from a small primarily retail space in Falls Church, she opened her first warehouse in Merrifield, and then transformed the growing business into a retail/warehouse space in the Fairfax Circle area in 2020. They feel very fortunate to now have their business all under one roof! After taking a class, their ‘students’ also have ongoing access to the teams’ extensive knowledge base to ask for help in completing future home projects. While the Furniture Rescue shop is a busy one, Joni always finds time to give you her personal attention. Joni describes that the favorite part of her day is when a

new customer comes in and says “WOW! I finally found my happy place.” She loves connecting with longtime customers as well as brand new ones; not just about their furniture, but about their families and lives. She also enjoys the problem solving aspect when a customer comes in with a challenge or desire that they can’t quite articulate. She helps them identify what issues need to be solved. Next, they drill down some furniture possibilities that might fit the need. From there, they work out details such as modifications or paint color. While most of us are still recovering from the winter holidays, right now is actually the perfect time to start thinking about how we can adjust our lifestyles for spring to best optimize our health during that time. Adjusting your lifestyle and habits towards the end of winter can have positive effects on your health as you transition into spring.

Spring is considered a natural time for detoxification. The liver, as a major detoxification organ, is emphasized during this season. Cleansing practices and dietary adjustments may be recommended to support detoxification. Drinking warm water with a squeeze of lemon is often recommended to help flush out toxins and hydrate the body.

In Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), each season is associated with specific elements, organs, and energetic qualities. TCM emphasizes living in harmony with the changing seasons. Adapting one's lifestyle, diet, and daily routines to align with the characteristics of each season is believed to promote overall health and well-being.

To support liver health, focus on incorporating foods that are gentle on the liver and promote detoxification. Include fresh greens, sprouts, and foods rich in chlorophyll. Again, the sour taste is believed to benefit the liver so incorporate foods with sour flavors. However, moderation is key.

Spring is associated with the Wood element in TCM. This element is linked to the liver and gallbladder organs. The liver and gallbladder are considered the primary organs associated with spring. These organs play a crucial role in the smooth flow of Qi (vital energy) and the processing of emotions. Spring is characterized by the upward and outward movement of energy. It's a time of expansion and growth, reflecting the emergence of new life in nature. In TCM, emotions are closely tied to organ systems. The liver is associated with the emotion of anger. During spring, there is a focus on balancing emotions and promoting emotional well-being. The color associated with the spring season is green, symbolizing growth and vitality. Incorporating green foods into the diet is often recommended during this time. The sour taste is associated with the liver. Including foods with a sour flavor, such as vinegar and citrus fruits, is believed to support liver health.

Speaking of food, transition from heavier, warming winter foods to lighter, more refreshing options. Include a variety of seasonal fruits and vegetables. Cook with methods that preserve the natural integrity of the ingredients. Gentle exercises like Tai Chi and Qigong are often recommended during spring to promote the smooth flow of Qi and enhance flexibility. Outdoor activities that connect with nature are also encouraged. Finally, Spring is seen as a time of renewal and growth, both in nature and within the body. It's time to release the old and make way for the new. Embrace positive changes in your life, both mentally and emotionally. Set intentions for personal growth and development By making these adjustments, aligning yourself with the correspondences of spring, you are essentially promoting a holistic approach to health that takes into account physical activity, nutrition, sleep, and mental well-being, all of which can contribute to a healthier and more enjoyable spring season. Program, a unique initiative designed for children between the ages of 3 and 12. More than just an acronym, S.H.A.R.E. represents a thinking studio with a purpose – to provide children with a space where they can Speak up, Hear Others, Analyze stories, Read texts, and Evolve into critical thinkers. Cristina Pak, a senior at Langley High School, is the visionary founder of the S.H.A.R.E. Book Club. Her mission is to create a platform for children to learn and grow from one another, fostering an environment where they can freely express their thoughts. Recognizing the heightened need during the COVID-19 pandemic, Cristina believes that every child deserves a space to discuss, contemplate, and question the messages conveyed by books.

For the past four years, the S.H.A.R.E. thinking studio has been operating at Dolley Madison Library. Every other Saturday from 3-4 PM, Cristina and Kayla engage children in life lessons through hands-on activities, going beyond traditional curricula to enrich their intellectual curiosities.

Laser dentistry can be less painful than using traditional drills and other dental tools, which may reduce the need for anesthesia. This is especially good for small children and infants who aren't able to safely handle higher amounts of anesthesia. However, while laser dentistry may be able to reduce the amount of anesthesia needed, it does not completely eliminate the need for painkillers.

To determine if laser dentistry is the right dental treatment plan for your child, be sure to consult with an experienced pediatric dentist. Dr. Island and her team of specialists are happy to guide you to make the right oral health decision.

BIOPSY AND REMOVAL OF GUM LESIONS If your child has a lesion in their mouth, we can use a laser to carefully remove a small piece of the tissue for testing. While most mouth lesions are benign, it's always better to be safe than sorry. If the lesion is causing your child pain or discomfort, we can excise it with dental laser treatment. Pediatric dental lasers can also be used to remove mouth lesions. When a dentist uses a laser, it minimizes the amount of bleeding and swelling by cauterizing the wound as it cuts. Not only does this help pediatric patients recover faster, but it also can be considered less painful than traditional methods of gum lesion removal. TONGUE TIE TREATMENT If you've noticed that your infant has a band of tissue connecting the tip of their tongue to the floor of their mouth, you will want to consult with a pediatric dental professional as soon as possible. You may also be referred by a lactation consultant if you have been having problems breastfeeding as a result of your child's tongue-tie. Tongue-tie left untreated can interfere with breastfeeding, eating solid foods, and normal speech development. To avoid the consequences of untreated tongue-tie, we recommend you schedule an appointment at Island Childrens Dentistry. CAVITY TREATMENT For children who are afraid of dentist drills, you may want to consider laser cavity treatment. Laser treatment doesn’t create the same disconcerting drilling sound and can help save more of the healthy tooth during cavity treatment than a traditional dental drill. Depending on the type and placement of the cavity, it may still be necessary to use a dental drill with the laser.
