Ashima
Ashima was nominated because “She is an amazing mom, always balancing, juggling busy doctor life and life with kids with a big smile. She has a big heart and is crazy about art with kids. Always giving the best for kids and helping the community.”
Ashima was born in India and spent her childhood in the Middle East, then moved to the US when she was 23. She married Vineet, her best friend from college, and they have two children, whom they decided to raise in McLean.
She is a rheumatologist, and her husband is a cardiacologist, so clean eating and living are very important to them. They like to expose their children to nature and its elements. They compost and grow veggies in their small home garden during the summer, and the kids have no iPads as yet.
Indian culture is important to her, so through her group “Indians in McLean,” she has regular meet-ups to celebrate her heritage with friends and family. Ashima is so thankful for her village in and around the McLean area.
McLean and its proximity to DC and surrounding areas have enriched her life; whether it be going into DC, driving to the wineries, a glamping trip to Shenandoah, or driving to the beach, they have it all and feel so fortunate.
What does being a mother mean to you?
It means the world to me. Nothing can bring so much joy, pride, happiness, and love despite being a source of anxiety and relentless hard work at the same time. It makes me think of all the sacrifices my mother and mother-in-law have made in their lives to give us the opportunities we have today. I only hope and pray that I can do the same for our children one day.
Favorite thing to do with your family in McLean?
Walk along Pimmit Run trail. The kids like sushi at Tachibana, so we walk to it through the woods. Now that the kids can ride bikes independently, family bike rides on WOD trail are the best.
Favorite thing to do *without* your family?
Take care of my indoor plants.
Favorite holiday to experience as a parent?
Diwali: I enjoy celebrating the Festival of Lights. All the light, sparkle, gold, and warmth that come with it are my favorites. I love to expose the children to our culture and share it with them.
The second-best holiday is July 4. We proudly celebrate the US with our children and all that this country has given us.
Coolest milestone you’ve experienced as a mother?
The day the kids asked for kale chips and chia pudding over cookies and ice cream... I must have done something right, haha. Every day of motherhood is a celebration. You raise children only once, and they will grow up in the blink of an eye, so “enjoy every second, every moment, and celebrate every day” is my motto.
If you could have/do anything for Mother’s Day, what would it be?
Spend time with the kids: under the stars, in a tent, in nature, cooking on a campfire, with no phones or devices, and live in the present moment.

Hiba Kaissi Gordon
Parents Association, a dedicated room parent, and a driving force behind major school events, she finds profound joy in contributing to the shaping of a brighter future for the next generation. She takes immense pride in embracing life’s simple pleasures, always ready to extend a helping hand and serve as a steadfast role model for her daughters.
When not immersed in the realms of motherhood, patents, and education, you’lloften find her at the bowling alley or engaging with fellow McLean moms on the tennis courts.
What does being a mother mean to you?
Experiencing the world through my daughters’ eyes. It’s about sharing a deep connection and understanding with my daughters while celebrating their successes, comforting them in times of need, and instilling in them the values and lessons that will shape their characters and futures.
Favorite thing to do with your family in McLean?
Starting my weekend with my family and having breakfast at MFR o ers us a chance to connect before we begin a busy weekend of activities.
Hiba is nominated because “she is a rockstar!
Apart from her busy day job, she works TIRELESSLY to advance the school’s e orts and resources in education and recreation. She is the Vice President of the school parent association and an inspiration.”
Hiba Kaissi Gordon was born in Connecticut, but a few years later moved to Beirut, Lebanon, where she spent her formative years growing up in a trilingual and multicultural family. Driven by a passion for innovation and problem-solving, she moved back to the U.S. and pursued an undergraduate degree in Biomedical Engineering, followed by an M.B.A., equipping herself with a unique blend of technical expertise and business acumen. With a career trajectory marked by ambition and entrepreneurship, she paved her own path by establishing an intellectual property consulting firm. She is now married to her soulmate, and together they have two daughters who attend the Montessori School of McLean.
Beyond her professional pursuits, she is deeply engaged in her daughters’ school, filling the void of her lifelong dream of working with children. Serving as the Vice President of the
Favorite thing to do *without* your family?
Feeding my competitiveness with league bowling and tennis with my fellow McLean tennis moms. It’s a fantastic way to stay active, relieve stress, and socialize.
Favorite holiday to experience as a parent?
Watching my daughters celebrate their birthdays through their eyes is pure joy. Birthdays are a celebration of your individual person, and so they are considered holidays in our household!
Coolest milestone you’ve experienced as a mother?
The day I watched my preschooler and kindergartener walk into the same school together, hand in hand.
If you could have/do anything for Mother’s Day, what would it be?
Taking an uninterrupted shower in preparation for the special day I know my family has planned for me.

What does being a mother mean to you?
Being a mother means having the opportunity to give my children the loving, safe, and carefree upbringing that I myself enjoyed thanks to my own parents. My husband and I strive to give our children diverse experiences while simultaneously teaching them about the importance of discipline and hard work. Ultimately, I hope they will grow up to be well-rounded, patriotic, and contributing members of society.
Favorite thing to do with your family in McLean?
We love to spend time with our friends and neighbors. Whether it’s taking a walk or bike ride, shooting hoops in the cul-de-sac, hanging out at McLean Little League, McLean Day, or McLean Swim and Tennis during the summer, we just love to get outside and feel connected to our community.
Katie Broom
Katie was nominated because “she has given her time to the McLean community for over 10 years as an amazing connector in the community who helps bring everyone together! She was the president of the MOMS Club when her children were toddlers and now serves at her children’s elementary school.”
Katie Broom and her husband, Slade, moved to McLean in 2013. They have three children: Ellie (10), Annie (8), and Beau (5), plus a golden retriever, Gracie, and a guinea pig, Cici. While originally from Houston, TX (and still a Texan at heart!), she’s called the DC area home since beginning her undergraduate studies at Georgetown in 2001. In her 20s, she served as Chief of Sta to Alan Greenspan and attended business school at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. In her 30s, while working part-time, she and Slade welcomed their three children, and Katie served on boards like McLean Moms and McLean Broyhill Estates Association. Today she works full-time as a finance Chief of Sta at Fannie Mae; however, being a mom and a member of the McLean community will always be her greatest joy. Next year, she’ll serve as PTA President for Franklin Sherman, and Slade is running for the McLean Community Center Governing Board.
Favorite thing to do *without* your family?
I love to spend time with my mom-friends – walks, talks, cocktails, mani/pedis. Any kind of spa pampering is a win, in my book!
Favorite holiday to experience as a parent?
Christmas! No question. The joy of Christmas and the holiday season is truly magical, and I look forward to celebrating it every year with our children.
Coolest milestone you’ve experienced as a mother?
I’m really relishing my children at this elementary school age. I absolutely love our newfound freedom to travel, go on adventures, and enjoy dinner out together. I love seeing the look of wonder on my children's faces as they experience the world.
If you could have/do anything for Mother’s Day, what would it be?
Number one: sleep in. Then Exercise. Then go out to a nice brunch with my family. Last year, we enjoyed Mother’s Day brunch at Le Diplomate downtown, and it was absolutely perfect, so we plan to do the same again this year.

Maeve Boyd
Becoming a single mom was another untraditional surprise and a path I never envisioned for myself, but my miracle was here, and we have walked this life together for nearly five years.
Being a mom is my greatest joy; she is my greatest gift. I have learned so much about myself, my strengths and weaknesses, and what true, unadulterated, unconditional love looks like.
For my miracle child, you are my everything and more. I love you for all the evers.

Maeve was nominated because “she is the single mom of the cutest little girl, and she was her father's full-time caregiver for the past five years while raising her daughter... She’s always remained such a wonderful mom.”
Maeve Boyd was born in DC and has lived in NOVA her whole life. She attended O’Connell High School, Marist College, and George Mason University. Her background is in marketing, home staging, and interior design. She enjoys gardening, cooking, reading, traveling, and anything outdoors! She has been a McLean resident since 2020 and loves the sense of community amidst the hustle and bustle that is Northern Virginia.
What does being a mother mean to you?
Growing up as an only child, I had envisioned becoming a mom of many children someday; at least 2-3 kids seemed picture-perfect. But when I was told in my early 30s that it would be impossible to naturally conceive, everything I ever dreamt pertaining to parenthood ceased to exist. I understand that, for endless reasons, there are millions of people who never have children. For me, it was an absolute heartbreak having to sacrifice my dreams of my lifeimagined. But miracles do happen, and God had di erent plans for me. Against what the doctors believed, I did conceive and had my beautiful daughter, Sutton, in 2019.
Favorite thing to do with your family in McLean?
Hike and bike! We walk our two pups regularly through Pimmit Run and bike the W&OD.
When nature calls, we explore local treasures like Scott's Run and Di icult Run.
We have also made lifelong friends in our four years living here and have really found "our people" and a true community. Spending time with our friends is one of our favorite things to do in McLean.
Favorite thing to do *without* your family?
Run. Running is my alone time, my thinking time, and my meditation time.
It is my endorphin fix and my version of self-care.
Favorite holiday to experience as a parent? Every. Single. One.
Coolest milestone you’ve experienced as a mother?
Watching my little “care-bear” emerge. I am told by her teachers that Sutton helps out when mistakes happen. She says, "It's ok, everyone makes mistakes; we will try again.”
I've always said, "It's not whether or not she aces her math tests; what I truly care about is that
My child is sitting with the lonely kid at the table." I'm just so touched to know that my kiddo cares and that she has found her voice.
If you could have/do anything for Mother’s Day, what would it be?
Take my mom and Sutton to the Amalfi Coast for 3 weeks. One day, I will manifest this for us!

Rebecca
Rebecca was nominated because “she,s the best single mom I know , hardworking and amazing at it and also finds the time and generosity to help in our community, huge heart ,kind and a great friend”
Rebecca was born and raised in Washington, DC, but has been in McLean for over ten years. She is the mother of two children, ages six and nine years old, who both attend Kent Gardens Elementary School. She has been a dedicated public servant to the US government and her community for over 15 years. She volunteers as room parent for her children’s classrooms, is a member of the McLean Moms Club, and volunteers at Share of McLean. She was also heavily involved with the McLean Central Playground Team, raising over $400k for the renovation of the playground that will open later this year. She has been so impressed by the sense of community in McLean that came together for the playground e orts as well as the support of local initiatives that impact our city’s families.
What does being a mother mean to you?
It means navigating the intricate balance between providing for my child's needs and fostering their emotional growth, all while managing the responsibilities of parenthood alone. It involves teaching them to be the best versions of themselves and showing them acceptance and unconditional love to foster kindness and confidence in themselves.
Favorite thing to do with your family in McLean? We frequent the library as often as we can, and then we walk over to see the progress being made on the old/new playground.
Favorite thing to do *without* your family?
I enjoy going for runs outside and then going to get a cappuccino at StarNut Gourmet. Also getting a pedicure at Savoir Nail Boutique!
Favorite holiday to experience as a parent?
My son was born the day after Christmas and my daughter a few days after the 4th, so we celebrate those two holidays with extra joy due to their birthdays!
Coolest milestone you’ve experienced as a mother?
There is nothing like seeing your kids finally get along and play together! Seeing them negotiate and agree to a show or an activity makes me feel good as a mother.
If you could have/do anything for Mother’s Day, what would it be?
More time with my kids, and that they stay little for a bit longer!

Shana King is nominated because “Shana is the coolest mom EVER! She balances the busy schedules of six children with a sense of humor and care. I feel like she is a wonderful role model of everything a mom aspires to be.”

Shana King
What does being a mother mean to you?
To me, being a mother means loving my children wholeheartedly and unconditionally. And loving them means teaching them the biblical truth: their worth is God-given and not based on any worldly achievements. While the children may question this truth based on circumstances in their lives over time, I am comforted by Proverbs 22:6, which says, “Train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old, he will not turn from it.”
Favorite thing to do with your family in McLean?
We attend McLean Bible Church every Sunday. It is one of the few times in the week where all eight of us are heading in the same direction. Each Sunday, I can dust o adversities that happened in the previous week, and any thoughts in my mind that overwhelm me are replaced by feelings of contentment, peace, and hope as I head into the following week. It helps me remain focused on the many blessings in my life, which in turn helps me to better love others around me.
Favorite thing to do *without* your family?
I enjoy running or walking outside. I run with a group of women in my neighborhood, and have an English Cream Golden Retriever who is always up for a run or walk!
Favorite holiday to experience as a parent?
Shana King was born on O utt Air Force Base in Omaha, Nebraska, and then raised primarily in Fairfax County, Virginia. She graduated from Lake Braddock and then played field hockey at Davidson College. After college, Shana traveled and worked in Africa, Japan, California, and Virginia. She met her husband of 21 years, Peter, while working in Alexandria. Shana worked for FCPS as an ESOL teacher throughout the births of her six children: Anna in 2010, Caroline and Carter in 2012, Simon in 2014, Teagan in 2016, and Zoe in 2019. The King family has lived in McLean for 13 years. As a family, they have traveled extensively in the United States, primarily to national parks, and plan to take their first international trip this year. Shana enjoys running, Community Bible Study, McLean Moms book club, the KGRC swim team, connecting with other Jill’s House families, fostering friendships, and serving others as often as possible.
Halloween. The children are elated to pick a costume, and there is such anticipation for candy collection. It is an easy way to catch up with friends in the neighborhood. Traditionally, we gather for dinner, take photos, and hit the streets!
Coolest milestone you’ve experienced as a mother?
Letting go of perfection and comparison and trying to do it all. God is in control.
If you could have/do anything for Mother’s Day, what would it be?
With my family in tow, I would take a long, beautiful hike in one of Utah’s national parks, followed by a meal in the hip gateway town of either Moab or Springdale.

Vivian Lee
Vivian Lee was nominated because “Vivian is an amazing mom, leader and friend. She advocates on behalf of all families at Churchill Road Elementary and her patients as a doctor. She’s the whole package!”
Vivian Lee is a DMV native. She grew up just across the border from McLean in Potomac, Maryland. Her education and training gave her the opportunity to live across the US, including New Jersey, Nashville, Chicago, San Francisco, and Los Angeles. She met her husband, Young Ahn, in 2007, when they were both resident physicians. They settled in McLean with their three boys, Landon, Parker, and Brennan, in 2017. Shortly before the pandemic, they moved to Shanghai, China. During their time overseas, they were joined by the final member of the family, a rescue pup named Honeybear. The six of them moved back home to McLean in 2021. She enjoys volunteering at their school and being involved with the PTA, and will be serving as President for the upcoming school year.
What does being a mother mean to you?
Being a mother to me means showing my kids they are most important in our lives. When they were babies, I had an extended stretch at work when I didn’t see them wake up or go to sleep. I realized how limited my time with them was and made time with
my children the top priority. There were tradeo s with this decision, but I was fortunate to have the opportunity to do this and never doubted it as a mother.
Being a mother to me also means modeling continuous personal growth for my children. It may be showing my kids it’s important to push beyond my natural introversion to contribute to the community (or showing them it is okay to be at times!). It may be showing the discipline to consistently exercise or learning something new. Anything to show that people are always a work in progress—and that’s okay.
Favorite thing to do with your family in McLean?
We love to ride our bikes together around our neighborhood. Our favorite spots to go include the track behind their school and the trails near the library.
Favorite thing to do *without* your family?
Workout classes when I can squeeze them in. I’m a fan of Solidcore and Peloton.
Favorite holiday to experience as a parent?
Definitely Halloween! I loved Halloween as a kid, and I still do. It is so fun to help my kids decide on costumes, carve jack-olanterns, go trick-or-treating, and count the candy afterwards. I also love watching the annual Jimmy Kimmel ‘I ate all your Halloween candy’ prank videos!
Coolest milestone you’ve experienced as a mother?
Two of my kids have been in a special treatment program for their treenut allergies for the past year. The coolest milestone is seeing them eat whole walnuts and pecans now without a reaction!
If you could have/do anything for Mother’s Day, what would it be?
Sleep in till noon, then get some boba and Din Tai Fung soup dumplings with the family…but a few “Happy Mother’s Day” and hugs from the boys will make it perfect.

SPRING CLEANING: Easy Steps to Organize Your Garage
By JENYA TUCKER Owner of Minimize and Organize LLCGarage decluttering and organizing can feel like a daunting task, but with a strategic approach, it can transform your garage into a functional and tidy space.
The first step in this process is to declutter. This means taking everything out of the garage and sorting it into categories such as keep, donate, sell, and trash. Be ruthless in this process; if you haven't used an item in the past year or you are no longer into this sport, activity, etc. and it doesn't have sentimental value, consider letting it go. This step not only frees up space but also gives you a clear inventory of what needs to be organized.
Once the decluttering phase is complete, the next step is to plan your organizing strategy. This involves considering how you use

your garage and what items need to be accessible. For items that are used frequently, such as gardening tools or sports equipment, you'll want to store them in easily accessible locations. Shelving units, pegboards, and hooks can be incredibly useful for keeping these items organized and off the floor. For seasonal or rarely used items, consider using overhead storage or cabinets. Labeling shelves and bins can also be a game-changer, making it easier to find things when you need them.
Finally, maintaining your newly organized garage is crucial for ensuring it stays decluttered and functional. Make it a habit to put things back in their designated spots after use and periodically reassess what's stored in your garage, getting rid of items that no longer serve you. Implementing a system of regular mini-declutters, such as once every season, can help keep your garage in top shape. Remember, a well-organized garage not only saves you time and stress but can also be a source of pride and satisfaction.
You can always save your time by hiring a professional team of organizers and spending this valuable time with your family while the team is doing their job.

THE STORY OF 1953 TEQUILA, FOUNDED
AND LED BY WOMEN
By DANI BANEGAS
In a world where the spirits industry has long been dominated by men, 1953 Tequila emerges as a beacon of empowerment, led entirely by women. This extraordinary venture began with a serendipitous intersection of journeys, weaving together the paths of Lindsey Davis Stover, Alison Kiehl Friedman, and Shivam Mallick Shah.
Originally political rivals in Virginia's 10th district congressional race, Lindsey and Alison forged an unlikely friendship amidst the competitive landscape. United by shared values and a vision for positive change, they joined forces with Shivam to create a company that not only champions women's leadership but also seeks to make a meaningful impact on society.
Central to 1953 Tequila's ethos is the celebration of women's resilience and determination. The name itself, inspired by the year 1953, when Mexican women gained the right to vote and run for office, pays homage to the courageous trailblazers who paved the way for equality. With each sip of their ultra-premium tequila, the founders raise a toast to the indomitable spirit of women worldwide.
From its inception, 1953 Tequila has been committed to female leadership at every level. Partnering with a unionized, femalerun distillery in Mexico, the company ensures equitable practices, including fair wages and comprehensive healthcare access for all workers. This commitment extends to supporting local organizations driving positive change within their communities.
Despite initial skepticism, the founders remained steadfast in their pursuit of a partner who not only shared their values but also excelled in producing an exceptional product. Their perseverance paid off when they connected with a family-owned distillery led by Adriana Lopez, a visionary matriarch breaking barriers in the traditionally male-dominated tequila industry.
Beyond crafting award-winning spirits, 1953 Tequila is on a mission to pave the way for future generations of women in business. By sharing their journey and supporting women's initiatives, they seek
to make the path to success a little easier for those who follow.
The impact of 1953 Tequila has been nothing short of remarkable. Recognized as the "Best Additive-Free Anejo Tequila" by Men's Journal and featured on The Today Show, the company's achievements are a testament to the transformative power of female-led innovation.

As 1953 Tequila continues to challenge traditional norms and inspire change, their message rings clear: empowerment knows no bounds. With every bottle sold, they are not just crafting exceptional spirits but also paving the way for a more inclusive and equitable future. Follow their journey on Facebook and Instagram @1953Tequila, and experience their exceptional tequila at select retailers and online through their website. Cheers to the trailblazers!

As we step into Mental Health Awareness Month, it's crucial to remember that mental wellness is not merely the absence of illness but a state of thriving. This month serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of prioritizing our mental well-being and fostering a culture of self care and compassion.
In our fast-paced world, where the demands of daily life can sometimes feel overwhelming, it's easy to neglect our mental health. However, just as we prioritize our physical health through exercise and nutrition, it's essential to dedicate time and energy to nurturing our emotional and psychological well-being.
At Integrated Psychology Associates of McLean, LLC, we understand the complexities of the human mind and the significance of holistic mental health care. As co-owners, my colleague and I are committed to providing comprehensive services that empower individuals to lead fulfilling lives.
Our approach to mental wellness goes beyond traditional therapy sessions. We believe in creating a supportive and inclusive environment where clients feel heard, valued, and understood. Whether it's through individual counseling, assessment services, medication management, or specialized treatment programs, we tailor our services to meet the unique needs of each individual.
Throughout Mental Health Awareness Month and beyond, we encourage everyone to prioritize self-care and seek support when needed. Remember, it's okay not to be okay, and asking for help is a

sign of strength, not weakness. In addition to seeking professional assistance, various self-care practices can promote mental wellbeing. From practicing mindfulness and meditation to engaging in hobbies and spending time with loved ones, finding activities that bring joy and fulfillment is key to maintaining balance in life. To commemorate this month, we are delighted to share a photo of our dedicated team at Integrated Psychology Associates of McLean, LLC. Each member plays a vital role in our mission to promote mental wellness and provide compassionate care to our community.

HELPS INSTILL A LOVE OF READING FOR TITLE I PRE-KINDERGARTNERS
By SHEILA MURPHY Photos by FAITH BOETTGEREvery child looks forward to summer, with its long and lazy days, warm sunshine, and outdoor fun. Not to mention the added bonus of no school or homework! Unfortunately, for too many students, summer is also a time when they go without many of the basic necessities provided by their schools and the nonprofits that support them. Think healthy lunches, clothing, and books. Yes, books.
Early reading is the foundation for future learning success. It sparks creativity, curiosity, and imagination – all of which are important to early childhood development. No organization knows this better than the Assistance League of Northern Virginia (ALNV). ALNV is an all-volunteer nonprofit with a 20-year history of working to meet the basic needs of children attending low-income schools through food, clothing, and literacy programs.
ALNV's Literacy For Kids program provides one-on-one reading and mentoring for select students in Grades 1-3 at Title I schools. It also gifts books to kids through its Build a Child's Library events and runs a summer reading program to foster a love of reading at an early age. This program targets pre-kindergartners participating in Head Start programs at Title I schools in our community. In March, Social4Good (S4G) partnered with ALNV to purchase books and create book bags in support of this summer reading initiative.
S4G raised $4,076 in financial donations to help ALNV supply pre-K children in need at nine local Title I schools with a book bag and three books. For each month of summer, 375 children will have one new book to keep and read.

Using S4G's financial donations, ALNV was able to purchase the books from Scholastic at a significant discount, furthering the impact of S4G's donations.
On Wednesday evening, March 20, 40 S4G members gathered to assemble the book bags, build community in a social setting, and learn about the important work of ALNV. Betsy Brand, ALNV's Vice President of Strategic Planning, accepted with appreciation the book bags. “All of the children participating in ALNV's summer reading program attend schools where 100% of the students are eligible for free breakfast and lunch. These children come to school not just to learn but to have basic needs met. Many of these children do not own a book or come from households where books are scarce or nonexistent. These summer book bags will help these students maintain and hopefully build upon the early reading foundation gained through the Head Start programs they attend at their Title I elementary schools”, Brand stated.
Members were encouraged to bring a new or loved book to the event, and the evening ended with a book swap, reminding all who attended of the benefits of reading, even as we age!
S4G is an all-volunteer, grassroots organization that brings together engaged women who want to meet new people and support the organizations that make our community strong. Each month, this column will highlight S4G's monthly project to raise awareness of critical needs in our community and local nonprofits making a difference.
