Memorial day pushing into June marks a special time in the US. It’s the beginning of BBQ season and it’s no surprise that it’s also the time that we celebrate Dads. A lot of Dads feel in their element during this time, they get to soak up the rays and contribute to the household chores in their own way cooking over a fire. You can hear the distinctive sound of Dads grilling with their signature triple click of the tongs. Legend has it that a Dad forgot to click his tongs and burned the entire dinner. LOL! This Father’s day make sure to let the Dads in your life know how much you appreciate them. That their steadfast dedication to grill/tong safety is of the utmost importance and that no one in world can simultaneously cook a steak and a hot dog to perfection at the same time. You may be asking, is it ok to let the Father’s grill on Father’s Day? Of course! Just make sure to bring them their favorite snacks or beverages while they grill and let them know they’re the best! If the Father in your life is also a brisket enthusiast, then make sure to ask for the burnt ends! Father’s Day is an opportunity to tell dad how much you appreciate him. New dads, experienced dads, granddads, dads-in-law, stepdads, like-a-dads, girl dads, serious dads, goofball dads…There must be a million fatherly types out there, and without a doubt, there are at least that many reasons to honor them on Father’s Day. You probably know at least a few dads you’d like to recognize with a card and some heartfelt words on that third Sunday in June To my Dad: Papi, you have always treated me like a princess ,It takes a special kind of man to make others smile from the heart. I am really grateful for the time we are getting to spend together now. May Father’s Day bring lots of little reminders of all the ways you’re admired and appreciated. I love you!!

Sensational Skin All Summer Long with by Dr. Sarah Alemi When one thinks of the summer, one often thinks about enticing outdoor activities, long days and the hot, summer sun. Of course, during these summer months, many of us are also conscious about protecting our skin from overexposure to the sun. Why? Short-term, it can lead to sunburns and heat rash - as well as aggravation of conditions like rosacea and eczema - while long-term it can lead to dehydration, premature aging and potentially cancer. One of the best ways to take care of our skin is to avoid overexposure. Something else we can easily do is to stay hydrated. It’s important to stay hydrated not only by drinking enough water each day, but also by including water-rich foods into our diet, such as with watermelon or mint. Sometimes supplements can be taken to support healthy skin functioning, such as Vitamin E, Vitamin C and selenium.
Acupuncture
We can also incorporate acupuncture into our summer routine - especially if one is prone to sunburns, rashes or heatstroke. Why acupuncture? Before going into the sun, acupuncture treatments can help to strengthen the functioning of the skin, which includes increasing cell turnover, keeping the soft tissue hydrated and inflammation out of the area. For those who unfortunately do spend too much time in the sun, acupuncture can help with a sunburn by reducing the pain, discomfort, fatigue, inflammation and that extra feeling of heat that comes with sunburns. Licensed acupuncturists will often needle just outside the area of the sunburn as well as use distal points to help. Of course, acupuncture can also be used for keeping skin glowing throughout the summer and into the fall. By triggering local health processes in the face at specific points, acupuncture has been proven to help patients achieve smoother and brighter complexions over a number of treatments. This includes
helping with both the signs of aging, including dullness or pigmentation, as well as with conditions such as acne and rosacea. Acupuncture also helps with keeping the skin hydrated by helping to bring blood and lymph to the face. Hydrated skin is healthy and vibrant-looking skin! While it’s fun to spend time outdoors in summer, we also need to be conscious of overexposure to the sun. If you do find yourself spending a little too much time outside under the sun, consider making acupuncture a part of your summer routine. It can help keep your skin hydrated, strong and vivacious while also helping to combat redness, dryness, rashes and burns. Whatever reason you use acupuncture for, what’s great is that it is safe and natural in addition to being effective. What better way to take care of our skin and overall health than naturally, especially when so many treatments or products these days often contain harsh chemicals.

Education can change the trajectory for an entire family. In April, S4G supported the Mason Dream Scholarship, housed in George Mason University’s School of Business. Our initial goal was to fund at least one $1500 scholarship for a local student in Fall 2022, but we ended up funding three scholarships! George Mason University is home to one of the largest Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) and undocumented student populations in Virginia. This scholarship provides financial support for these students and those in Temporary Protected Status who cannot legally receive any federally funded student financial aid, including loans, grants, scholarships, or work-study money. The Mason Dream Scholarship (a 501c3) was established in 2016 and over the last six years has awarded over $18,000 to 11 students with a cumulative grade
This scholarship is more important now than ever. According to a recent survey, the COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on many Dreamers’ financial well-being. Many have lost jobs or had their work hours reduced. According to the research, the percentage of students who work fell from 70 percent before the start of the pandemic to 43 percent after; 83 percent have an immediate family member who was laid off or whose hours were cut due to COVID-19. At a social event held at the home of Lisa Gring-Pemble, Associate Professor of Business, Executive Director of Business for a Better World Center, and UndocuMason advisory board member at George Mason University, S4G members had the opportunity to meet six students, three of whom had received the scholarship. Each student shared their personal journey to build better lives through education, community
service, and advocacy for themselves and others. As one student gratefully acknowledged of those who supported the scholarship, "You give me hope for the future. Indeed, S4G is changing lives with your scholarship funds.” The Mason Dream Scholarship was established in response to the overwhelming financial need of this population and provides support to students whose immigration status may hinder them from accessing higher education and financial assistance. Rue is a sweet and playful puppy who is looking for a family with plenty of time, love, and patience to train her into the best girl she can be.
Size: 8.4 lbs as of 3/17 Estimated breed: Terrier mix Rue and her siblings found themselves at a rural Texas shelter when they were still only babies. The shelter is no place for puppies to grow up, so we brought them to Maryland for their chance at finding forever homes! As of 3/31, Rue is 9 weeks old and around 10 lbs. At best guess, she is some kind of terrier mix, but we can never say for sure!

Jennifer is a Like to Know (LTK) and Amazon.com influencer, and her popular posts have earned her VIP status at many high-end luxury stores and boutiques, invites to special events and priority access to many new products. For example, Louis Vuitton and Balmain reserved a paid trip for her and a guest to Paris Fashion Week 2023. When Jennifer worked in pharmaceuticals, one of her clients was a gastroenterologist named Lance. A graduate of Davidson College, Lance earned his medical degree and completed his residency at the Drexel College of Medicine in Philadelphia, PA and completed his fellowship training at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD. Today, he is a gastroenterologist at Northern Virginia Gastroenterology, P.C., with offices in Chantilly and Sterling. Lance is passionate about helping his patients achieve better digestive health to ultimately lead healthier and happier lives. “I remember how nice of a person Lance always was,” she recalled. “We were friends first, and his tech set us up because she thought we'd be perfect for each other. She was right.”

by Gina Foresta Meet the Lasner Family of The Reserve Beginning in kindergarten, Jennifer Smith has been passionate about
fashion and making her world more beautiful. “I come from a family of artists,” she said. “I love painting and decorating, and I even remodeled our entire house on my own.” As a result, many of her friends and family have recommended that she become an
interior designer. After graduating from George Mason University, Jennifer worked as a representative in pharmaceutical sales. However, she listened to those who saw her creative talent and is now the

Jennifer vividly remembers her first date with Lance. “I will never forget how excited and happy he was,” she said. “We quickly discovered that we were both looking to find true love again. We really balance one another.” They married in May of 2021 in Palm Beach, FL.

The couple originally planned a wedding in Positano, Italy for 2020, but similar to the plans of so many others, the pandemic had divergent ideas. As it was for them marrying for a second time, Plan B often proves to be the better option. “We had the most beautiful wedding,” exclaimed Jennifer. “The weather was perfect, our celebrant was extraordinary and everything about the day was magical.” Jennifer and Lance each blended three children into their new family. Jennifer’s eldest child, son

RESIDENT FEATURE Cameron, graduated from Virginia Tech and is working in an IT job in New Orleans, LA. Her eldest daughter, Sydney, just completed her sophomore year at Southern Connecticut State University where she is on the gymnastics team. Jennifer’s youngest daughter, Layla, is a rising 8th grader at Cooper Middle School and loves cheerleading. Lance has three sons, Mark, Sean and Jack. Mark attends Northern Virginia Community College and is hoping to transfer to the University of Virginia to study psychology. Sean just finished his first year at Virginia Commonwealth University studying computer science. Youngest son Jack completed his 9th grade year at St. John’s College High School where he plays football. “All of our kids are athletic and into sports,” said Jennifer. The family has a home gym where you often find one or two of the kids working out. For example, cheerleader Layla has an outdoor tumble track and trampoline where she likes to practice. French bulldog Bella may be seventh in the line of kids, but she stands out with her charm and adorability. She is obsessed with footballs and basketballs and enjoys hanging out with Bobo, her feathered housemate. Bobo has an affinity for the ladies and cheekily whistles at the women in the house. He loves to sing and dance to music with a good beat. “Bobo will also mimic people arguing — one of the funniest things we have ever heard,” laughed Jennifer. Lance is originally from Pittsburgh, PA, and Jennifer grew up in Fairfax, Virginia. 12 | JUNE 2022
Their blended family now lives in The Reserve community. “The landscaping and homes are really well maintained,” said Jennifer. “It’s one of the most beautiful neighborhoods in Mclean.” Jennifer started a Facebook group, the “Real Housewives of Mclean.” “It is taking off,” she exclaimed. “It is a fun group with so many amazing women. Who knows? Maybe we’ll even get our own Bravo show!” They have several events planned and hope to further expand the group. The family enjoys attending social events at Westwood Country Club where they are members. They also celebrate many holidays and participate in activities with the community group in The Reserve. Lance and Jennifer like to travel and explore as a couple and with their family. For two years in a row, they rented a waterfront vacation home in Ft. Lauderdale near Lance’s parents. The couple also has a trip planned to Greece and Turkey for later this year. Jennifer mused, “We may also head to Italy where we were going to have our wedding.” However, they are not looking back at what might have been. They have their eyes forward — focused on their new life together.
