Dear Neighbors,
With the closing of summer, the slow resurgence of back-to-school commercials and the coming autumn breeze, August is the transition between summer and fall. With the harvest moon it is the last full month of summer before the school bells start ringing and Labor Day comes roaring its head.
Back to school commercials used to start in august but for some reason they have resurged earlier and earlier every year. With the famous staples Ad of the 90s with the Christmas song “the most wonderful time of the year” it reflects how kids feel of these ads. Our schools start in late august therefore make sure to take advantage of the last month of freedom before reality takes over again, but the question is freedom for who? the kids or the parents? who wins in this equation? LOL (please look up that staples ad in you tube)
On another note, City planners and urban developers talk about placemaking, usually in reference to public spaces. It usually defines an area that’s intentionally created to draw people in like parks or plazas. From my perspective, placemaking has much more to do with what we, as community members, do to make our place special. It’s what individuals do to build a community out of an area. This extends to streets, neighborhoods, and towns. In this issue of McLean Living, it is our pleasure to introduce some important McLean Place makers. The Manley's and their entire family are dedicated to making McLean into a place that reflects their idea of community, service, and respect. It was a pleasure meeting the Manley's and as we got to know them, I can definitely say they are contributing to making our McLean, the amazing place that it is.
Finally, I want to thank our growing number of sponsors and encourage everyone to say thank you to each of them for making McLean Living possible. Please support our sponsors and advertisers. They have committed to our community by providing this platform to celebrate McLean.
With all of this being said, let's go ahead and dive into The McLean Living Issue!
Until next month, Mclean... just remember: Shopping, Dining + READING LOCAL is good for the soul.
Yours truly, Gloria

Ever wonder how your favorite doctor became so patient-centric versus some others that basically recite WebMD as they stare at a computer screen? Where do they learn to be a person and not a textbook?
That’s where I come in. I’m a Standardized Patient. Unless you’re a medical student or a Standardized Patient yourself, you probably don’t know what I am. If you are a medical student, you probably have some
Let me rewind and break it down for the majority of the population. A Standardized Patient, or SP, is an actor trained to portray a patient in a realistic and repeatable way for the purpose of interacting with medical students as actual patients would.
My real name is Katie, but I’m often referred to as “female of child-bearing age presenting with pain in right lower
quadrant”, or “surprisingly young-looking septic 86 year old”, or “surprisingly oldlooking jaundiced 17 year old”, or even (on occasion) “56 year old male presenting with chest pain”. The fact is, I’ve played hundreds of characters in my decade-plus as an SP; sometimes three in one day, other times, the same character for months on end.
Last week, I was being talked into signing paperwork for a spinal tap to test for Lyme disease, but next week I’ll be on crunches

while suffering from a pulmonary embolism. You get the idea. We SPs are trained on each specific character’s case information, affect, physical ailments and even how to administer verbal and written feedback in specific and nuanced ways. And most of the time, it’s standardized.
But there was this one time I accidentally wore my wedding ring when playing a 14 year-old coming in to talk about birth control, and another time I almost fell off the exam table onto a student, and then another when I accidentally left my alarm on outside the exam room and a student counseled me on endometriosis while “The Entertainer” played for 15 minutes on loop on my phone in the hallway.
Enough about me, let’s talk about the student variables! The reason we’re standardized is so we can know how to react when the current med student inevitably asks “How are you doing today?” differently than the seven previous students - it’s impressively unpredictable. The constant change is what drives someone like me to this profession. Predictability breeds stagnation, and as an actor I want to be kept on my toes. I want to get paid to practice my craft, even if it’s only for an audience of one first-year med student who is terrified to enter the room because they think they're going to have to uncover some deeply hidden agenda (and sometimes, they're correct!).
SP’s are an eclectic bunch. We run the gamut from stage and screen actors, to fitness professionals; from SAT tutors, to poets and students. We are young professionals and retired grandparents; all races, ethnicities, sexual orientations and personality types. What we all have in common is attention to detail, nuanced improv skills and an investment in the future of our healthcare system.
So for those of you unfamiliar with a Standardized Patient, we’re here to make sure by the time you step foot into a licensed doctor’s office, that you’ll be treated like a multi-faceted human being with questions and concerns - not just a diagnosis.
I get a day job where I can act, and you get a fully formed doctorready to help you tackle your Type 2 diabetes. Standardized Patients are all over the world, slowly spreading our presence one simulated encounter at a time - and if we do our job well, you’ll never even know we existed.
If you’d like to learn more about this fascinating profession, you can listen to me host The Standardized Patients Podcast wherever you get your podcasts. I was also a guest on the Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend podcast titled “The Professional Patient.”
Just like you, Bud has held many roles, each providing different challenges. He is not letting any challenges slow him down. Just like you, he is resilient.
Come explore Vinson Hall Retirement Community and hear from our residents. Learn how to take control of your future and remain resilient. Call us today to schedule a tour!

Spillman brothers journey from West African orphanage to DI football
By Andrew Florio, BVM Sports Journalist
The Spillman brothers were born in Sierra Leone, a country on the southwest coast of West Africa where 53% of the population makes less than $1.25 per day. There was never a thought of pursuing an education at an American university. This changed in 2013. Nate and Edwin, who were 8 and 7 years old respectively at the time, were able to come to the United States through a missionary orphanage program. Not too long after coming over, they quickly found a love for the game of football… Scan to continue reading

treatment of
OPTIONS & RSUs
by Iche Chiu
Many of you have stock options and RSUs; however, the tax treatment associated with it is a little more complicated than you may think- especially, when the statements or schedules received conflict with each other. If you feel the pain, it worth your time to read this article.
Being a part of the startup team or investing in early-stage companies can be a rewarding experience. Along with the excitement of creating new things, people who put their efforts on the early-stage companies usually receive payout in terms of stock options and RSUs (restricted stock units). Although, unfortunately, many startups struggle to hit the projection and grow to the point as the founder expected. The stock options and RSUs will be worth so little (if not nothing) for a long time. However, in cases where the company is bought out or a new round of financing gives a much higher valuation,
those stock options and RSUs might be cashed out with significantly higher amounts. And of course, when that happens, taxes come along.
Depends on your role within the company, either as an employee or a passive investor, the cash payout and tax withholding will be different. If you are an employee of the company and received stock options under an incentive stock options grant (ISO), usually there won’t be any tax triggered at the option grant date or the exercise date. You will have the preferential capital gain tax treatment if you sell the stocks in a qualifying disposition. With the proper tax planning, the cash outlay can be maximized. However, minimizing the ultimate the taxes might not always be the only goal, other factors need to be considered. For example, if you are riskaverse and want to minimize the exposure to a concentrated position, then holding the stocks long enough to meet the qualifying disposition rule may not be ideal for you.
There are also cases that stocks are granted directly to employees or consultants as compensation for their services. Usually there are some restrictions on those stocks, such as a vesting schedule. Generally, you will be subject to taxes when the stocks are fully vested, or in other words, when the substantial risk of forfeiture lapses. 83(b) election is an effective tax planning tool to maximize the portion of earnings that subject to the preferential capital gain treatment. In either case, it’s always advisable to keep good documentation of the stock cost basis.
For passive investors of the startup companies, convertible note is a popular instrument to fund the company. When the terms are met under those instruments, such as a buyout of the company, the taxes will be trigger as well. The companies may not withhold taxes for you in such cases, therefore planning ahead is important to avoid the potential estimated tax penalties.

MEE T THE Manley Family of McLean!
by Katie Culligan
Monique McCloud-Manley (46) and her husband Kwame Manley (48) have lived in McLean for five years, recently moving from the Salona Village area to Basil Road after 18 months of building their new home. They love their new neighborhood and enjoy spending time in the backyard swimming with their two children, McKenzie Manley (16), Justin Manley (12) and friends.
Rounding out their family is their two year old black Goldendoodle, Chase, who they welcomed into their home when he was five months old, in September of 2020. He came to live with them after a 15 hour round trip drive to New Orleans, LA - now that’s commitment!
Speaking of commitment; The Manley family exudes commitment to both community service and to education on both a local and wider scale.
Monique currently serves on the Executive Board and Chairs the Development Committee of the non-profit organization Generation Hope, which is based in Washington, D.C., and serves student parents throughout the DMV area. Generation Hope provides direct support to teen parents in college as well as their children through holistic, two-generation programming. They provide this support to ensure all student parents have the opportunities to succeed and experience economic mobility. Generation Hope also engages education and policy partners to drive systemic change for this often invisible student population on college campuses. This work is a real passion of hers and continues to reinforce a core value that she learned from her parents and grandparents as a child: the importance of education.
Additionally, she has spent the last five years as the Co-chair of the Community Service committee for the Reston Chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Inc. During her time as committee chair, her chapter partnered with Fairfax County’s “BeFriend-A-Child Program” to provide programming to students and mentors in the program for three consecutive years.

Monique and Kwame began dating in college. In 1994, Monique moved to Atlanta as a Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) Scholar to study Mathematics at Spelman College and Industrial Engineering at Georgia Tech. During the beginning of her Freshman year at Spelman College, while Kwame was a Junior at Morehouse College, majoring in English, they ended up on a road trip from Atlanta, GA to North Carolina that would change the trajectory of their lives.
Monique had met Kwame through her older brother Willard, who was also a student at Morehouse College, previous to starting her Freshman year at Spelman. Willard decided to spend his year abroad studying at Oxford, but put Monique and Kwame in touch prior to his departure. Monique would occasionally see Kwame around campus and the two would exchange pleasantries. Kwame always told her to reach out if she needed anything and one day Monique took him up on his offer and called to ask him for a ride to the Atlanta airport. Kwame told her that unfortunately he couldn’t take her to the airport because he was heading out of town on the Friday she needed a ride. They spoke a few minutes longer and Kwame asked her where she was going. Well it turns out that Monique was heading to North Carolina to visit her grandparents and as fate would have it, Kwame just happened to be attending a wedding in the exact same city that weekend. Being the great guy that he is, he wanted to help so he offered to let her ride up to NC with him and save her plane ticket.

Once the camps are done, he’ll spend some quality time in North Carolina with his grandparents.
The Manley Family’s favorite activity is traveling internationally. Recently, they spent two weeks in London, Paris, and San Sebastian, Spain. At the time of this article being written, they were enjoying a week in British Virgin Islands – Virgin Gorda.
Additionally, the family enjoys watching movies, going to see live theatre and shows. Most recently, Monique and McKenzie saw Mean Girls at the Kennedy Center and the whole family went to see Sidwell Friend’s Production of Annie!
They also enjoy trying new restaurants and cuisine. They recently tried Andy’s Pizza for the first time and are big fans of Pasa Thai and getting prepared foods from Balducci’s.
On living in McLean, Monique says “It is a beautiful community and we really enjoy living here. It is conveniently located to Washington D.C. and Rosslyn, where our work has been based, but also affords us the opportunity to escape the grind of the city and retreat to a wonderful community.”
They find lots of life’s conveniences in McLean (like Chase’s vet and groomers) and even participated in an event at the McLean
Community Center. They feel really fortunate to have the “best of both worlds” living in McLean and look forward to many more years in their new home, which they built right here in town. They also hope to have the opportunity to meet more neighbors.
It’s clear that this family deeply cares not only for one another, but for giving back to their community on a regular basis - what an asset to the McLean locale!

After advising college-bound students since 2008 and spending over 10,000 hours in this field, I have learned that many students suffer academically, financially, and even professionally by not following a few important rules. This can be distilled down to what I consider the Top 10 Commandments of navigating through the college application process. Let me explain to you how I discovered these truths and why they matter so much, especially if your aim is for admission to elite colleges and universities in the United States. For this month, we shall discuss rule #1.
1. Thou shalt not take only one aptitude test before choosing a major
I am sure that many high school seniors and college freshmen are tired of hearing, “What is going to be your major?” I am guilty of asking and being asked that question too. However, we should question whether this is a fair expectation of these teenagers, for them to somehow understand the content and the gravity of these undergraduate majors before taking the actual courses. It would be like picking your first home with a big mortgage by looking from outside only, without actually getting in.
According the National Center for Education Statistics, “80% of students in college end up changing their major at least once, on

average, college students change their major at least three times over the course of their college career.”

Considering “ The overall average cost of tuition and required fees in the 2019-2020 school year was $21,035 per year for a public 4-year college, for an in-state student, and $32,769 for a private 4-year college student,” if the change of major occurred three times in a row, we are looking at the potential maximum financial loss of $31,552.50 for an in-state student and $ 49,153.50 for a private college student.

In order to avoid this critical mistake, the rule #1 for my students at C2 Education is for them to take at least three well-respected aptitude tests, preferably recommended by their school counselors and other college prep professionals like C2, and find the common ground amongst the three sets of test results.
In this way, the strengths of several aptitude tests can be harnessed and collectively they can broaden a student’s vocational potential. This can direct the critical decisionmaking process with respect to selection of a major. This can avoid suboptimal course selection and minimize the opportunity cost of switching majors throughout the college years. Students can pick their college majors with less risk and more confidence in areas that merge their natural talent, skill sets, and passion.
Critics may say that some students might want to explore the unknown fields and pick a major that is outside of the test results. To the critics, I would say that the choice is definitely up to the students, but at least, they can make an informed decision based upon meaningful metrics of aptitude.
Finally, after you successfully enroll at your dream school, I recommend that you bring these results over and discuss more in-depth with a career guidance counselor and other upper classmen before declaring your major. If you are still not sure, take foundational courses first and earn your time to expose yourself to internship opportunities during the summer or even in school years.
And always, and I mean always, don’t be afraid to ask, “Why?” Ask the juniors and seniors who have already taken the major courses of your interest, and ask them why they picked this major, and if they went back to their freshmen year, they would have done the same. Their experiences and honest feedback may surprise you or may assure you. Ultimately you hold the power to choose, but like a wise man said once, ‘in the multitude of counselors there is safety.”

emergency housing for individuals and families. They are open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and employ 20 full-time staff members. They also have part-time staff and more than 400 volunteers dedicated to helping clients get back on their feet.
Cornerstones (cornerstonesva.org) is a 501c3 organization that promotes self-sufficiency by providing support and advocacy for those in need of food, shelter, affordable housing, quality childcare, and other human services. They have helped provide life-changing opportunities for more than 16,000 local families and individuals with upwards of 5,000 children annually.
With financial sponsorship and in-kind donations, S4G was able to provide new items for the playground and family room at Embry Rucker such as a basketball net and pole wrap, outdoor toys and balls, standing sand table, razor scooters, storage containers, art and craft supplies, area rug and pillows for the family room, mini fridge, power washer, power drill, and various other cleaning and gardening tools.
S4G members also provided new or like new donations of books for all ages, puzzles, family board games, two children’s bikes, and a shelving unit. Over 800 books and 100 games and puzzles were received and members of the S4G project team created an initial library of items to ensure there was something available for every age and will keep an inventory to replenish at Embry Rucker when needed.

On Saturday, June 25, S4G hosted a hands-on working day at Embry Rucker. We beautified the indoor and outdoor family spaces. On the playground, members removed old rubber tiles to power wash the basketball court, cleaned up the playground to make the most of limited play area, and built an outside storage bin and sand table to fill with toys. Inside, members did a spring cleaning and installed a new cubby system for art and crafts supplies, created a library with books, games and puzzles for all ages, and added a carpet and pillows to the common area. In addition to providing items to beautify the indoor and outdoor spaces, the project sponsored much needed tools and supplies such as a double stroller, mini fridge, and a backpack vacuum to maintain Embry Rucker and support the residents.
