THE RICH HISTORY OF NOTTINGHAM LACE

Nottingham City Libraries and LibraryOn Unveil New Snapshot into Nottingham Lace

Nottingham Lace evolved dramatically with the advent of the industrial revolution. Innovations in lace-making machinery, such as John Heathcote's bobbin-net machine, revolutionised production, enabling Nottingham to become a global leader in textiles and lace machinery manufacturing. The city’s lace products gained international acclaim.

The new resource, available on the LibraryOn website, showcases the extensive Local Studies collection at Nottingham Central Library. This includes books, maps, artefacts, documents, and photographs that highlight the intricate lace-making process, the social history of lace production and technological advancements. First-hand accounts from former lace workers, collected in the 1970s, offer a glimpse into their daily lives and struggles.

All materials are accessible to library and non-library members by visiting Nottingham Central Library or via email enquiry to: LocalStudies.Library@ Nottinghamcity.gov.uk.

Councillor Lux, Executive Member for Carbon Reduction, Leisure, and Culture at Nottingham City Council, remarked, "This collaboration between Nottingham City Libraries and LibraryOn celebrates and preserves our local heritage. The history of Nottingham Lace highlights the city’s resilience, innovation, and

the contributions of countless workers. By exploring this history, we honour their legacy and gain insights into our cultural and economic development. This resource is crucial for educating and inspiring future generations."

Tiina Hill, LibraryOn Head of Delivery at the British Library: ‘We are so thrilled at LibraryOn to have partnered with Nottingham Central Library on this special project that explores how Nottingham was shaped by the industrial revolution and became the centre of fine lace production. From the first-hand accounts of workers in the factories to photographs of Jardine’s lace machinery, this project highlights the role libraries play in recording local history and offers a fascinating insight into the social and economic impact of lace manufacturing over 400 years in Nottingham.’

Visitors can view the Nottingham’s Lace feature on the LibraryOn website, which includes a timeline of Nottingham’s lace industry, a curated reading list, links to related archives, and 3D exhibitions.

This initiative is part of Nottingham City Libraries’ ongoing efforts to make local history accessible and engaging. By partnering with platforms like LibraryOn, Nottingham City Libraries aim to connect people with the rich stories that have shaped their city, fostering a deeper appreciation of Nottingham’s heritage.

Katherine Jennick

Katherine Jennick business owner, mother of two, Careers Adviser, and the list goes on, tells Nottingham Aspect all about her experience rediscovering herself...

In 2017, working in a sector I had always loved, I found myself struggling. I had two young children and was in a new role with a new manager. The situation with my manager was increasingly challenging, I felt bullied and undervalued. My confidence was rock bottom, and I lost all self-belief that I could do the job I had always loved.

I decided it was time for a complete change, so I took redundancy, retrained as a massage therapist, and set up a massage therapy business. It was a huge learning curve having never been selfemployed before but little did I know at the time, everything I learnt would be crucial when I founded What's your strength.

To help fund the career change, I did some careers work with a former colleague who had set up her own careers company in Nottinghamshire. Slowly, I regained my confidence, and I fell back in love with careers work.

Whilst all this was happening, I had the idea for What’s your strength. I could see that young people struggled to recognise their strengths and I wanted to create something to help them realise how amazing they are (reflecting back on this now, I can see that I was

struggling to see my own strengths due to the negative experience with my previous manager so I probably helped myself along the way too!)

A special friend encouraged me take my idea seriously so I set to work to make the idea in my head, a reality. I couldn’t have done this without my local network in Nottingham, a city bursting with creativity and innovative thinkers. I’m very fortunate to have collaborated with some amazing people:

• Nottingham Business Ventures helped me get my business off the ground

• Through Positively Empowered Kids I met a network of likeminded people with shared values and passion to make a difference

• Blue Stockings Society gave me access to a supportive community of women in business

• What’s your strength cards themselves are designed and printed by two Nottingham businesses

Keeping young people at the heart of What’s your strength? is really important to me. Starting a business in a city with varied schools, colleges, and universities has been invaluable:

• At the very beginning, students at

City Academy, Alderman White and Rushcliffe Spencer Academy were key to the market research for the first pack of What’s your strength cards

• As the business grew, students at Nottingham Trent University took part in the #NBSBright challenge to help me with a real-life business marketing challenge

• Young people have even been part of the production of the Let’s get started! cards. I created a work experience opportunity for Nottingham College photography students to visit a local SEN school, Carlton Digby, and take photos of the students who would appear on the finished product. Seeing young people work together on a project designed to empower young people was an absolute dream come true.

Nottingham Belfry Hotel. The event promises an evening of celebration, community spirit, and fundraising to aid groundbreaking research that is transforming breast cancer diagnosis and treatment globally.

The Nottingham Breast Cancer Research Centre (NBCRC) has gained international recognition for its cutting-edge research, including the development of the Nottingham Grading System and the Nottingham Prognostic Index, which are used worldwide to improve breast cancer outcomes. The centre's current focus includes detecting breast cancer early, stopping its spread, and creating personalized treatments to enhance patient care.

Why the Boobie Ball Matters

This event is crucial in ensuring the continuation of the NBCRC’s life-saving work. The centre relies heavily on fundraising to support its research efforts, which provide new insights into breast cancer and drive the development of innovative diagnostics and therapies.

A Cause Close to the Heart

For Alexandra Perry, a volunteer organiser of the Boobie Ball, this cause is deeply

Institute and has met many incredible women who have gone through similar experiences.

"The work being done by the team at NBCRC is truly inspiring," she says. "I’ve seen first hand the dedication of the researchers, and I am honored to contribute to this effort by helping to organise the Boobie Ball. It's a chance to give back to a cause that has had such a profound impact on my life and so many others."

A Tribute to a Special Sisterhood

Lisa Johnson, a breast cancer survivor from Nottingham and founder of the Boobie Ball, has a deeply personal connection to the event. In 2015, at the beginning of her chemotherapy, Lisa was introduced to Claire Bower and Rebecca Redmond by their breast care nurse. The three women quickly formed a strong bond, supporting each other daily through their treatments. Affectionately calling themselves the "chemo sisters," they found comfort in their shared experiences.

Sadly, both Claire and Rebecca went on to develop secondary breast cancer. Claire passed away in May 2020, during

the lockdown, forcing her friends and family to watch her funeral via Zoom link. Tragically, Rebecca also passed away this August."This year’s Boobie Ball is dedicated to the memory of my dear friend Rebecca," Lisa shares. "We went through so much together during our treatments, and I want this event to honor her strength, her spirit, and all the incredible women like her who have faced breast cancer with courage."

Join Us for an Evening to Remember

The Boobie Ball will be a night filled with hope, entertainment, and the opportunity to support breast cancer research. Guests can expect an evening of live music, a raffle, and auction prizes, all to raise funds for NBCRC. Attendees will also have the chance to hear from breast cancer survivors and those working on the frontlines of research.

Get Involved

Tickets for the Boobie Ball are available now, and all proceeds will go directly to supporting breast cancer research at the Nottingham Breast Cancer Research Centre. Local businesses and individuals are also encouraged to contribute raffle or auction prizes to help make the event a success.

The Nottingham based charity which transforms the lives of children and families living with disabilities across the East Midlands are moving to a new home soon, and need your support!

Footprints Conductive Education Centre is a Nottingham based charity which transforms the lives of children living with disabilities across the East Midlands and has been a registered charity for over 22 years. At their centre and through their support, babies and children develop the skills they need to thriveand achieve their potential.

Support for Children Living With Mobility and Communication Difficulties

Footprints provide transformative services for children living with mobility and communication difficulties, and all of their activities have a common goal – to help every child achieve their full potential within a safe, fun and supportive environment.

Their work follows the practice and principles of Conductive Education, a holistic education approach

developed to help children living with disabilities consciously learn the life skills that come more naturally to others. Children develop their motor, communication, sensory and self-help skills, working in small groups based on their age, specific needs and abilities.

The early intervention Footprints offers quickly benefits young children living with cerebral palsy or other conditions caused by damage to the part of the brain that controls movement. With the help of their programmes, services and strategies, children learn to overcome their physical and communication difficulties.

Giving Families Hope For The Future

Footprints works closely with the child and their family in a safe, positive and supportive environment to encourage and motivate each child's desire to achieve tasks. At the same time, they give families the knowledge, confidence and strength to cope with the disabilities their child lives with and understand

Crucially, the Nottingham based charity also ensure their families know where they can find further information and advice, and their experienced team give parents and siblings emotional support, offering practical and positive advice and information.

One of their parents, who has attended

the Footprints centre for just over a year, said “Footprints has made me hopeful for that future I was once grieving for. They have taught us so much, supported my family emotionally and been there for us at some of the toughest times.”

And another said, “Footprints took out the loneliness of being a parent of a child with a disability – people actually understood the challenges faced by such families.”

A New Home For Footprints

Footprints have recently announced a new home for their charity and will be moving from their current centre in Sneinton, to their new home in Clifton. This will become the brand-new Footprints Centre, home of Footprints Conductive Education and Community Hub (formally Highbank Community Centre on Farnborough Road in Clifton).

The new location will be Footprints own site and brings exciting opportunities, with better facilities for all of the families and children they support, organisations they work with and the local community.

The new Footprints Centre plans to have three session rooms, a wellbeing coffee bar for families to use and the community, as well as new facilities including a sensory room, function space and outdoor education areas.

Footprints has been working behind the scenes for a number of years, as finding a home for their charity is one of their key priorities, and they’re absolutely delighted to have found this in Clifton.

Stephen Frew, Footprints’ Business and Charity Manager said “moving to our new centre in Clifton is an absolute game changer for Footprints. As a charity who supports children and families with mobility and communication difficulties, it’s crucial that we provide a space which is accessible and is suitable for all of our needs, now and in the future.

At our brand-new Footprints Centre, we will be able to deliver a greater number of our transformative services and reach more families and children, with more flexible and purposeful session rooms and outdoor sensory areas. Our centre will also have a wellbeing coffee bar, not only for our families to use, but also for the community around us.”

“We can’t wait to join the incredibly supportive community in Clifton and get started on the exciting work to transform what was the Highbank Community Centre, into the Footprints Centre!”

The charity won’t be moving straight away as there is a little work to do to get the new site ready, and they will soon be recruiting for a Footprints team of volunteers to help them get the centre ready.

entirely from fundraising, charity and support partners, along with grants and trusts.

They are incredibly grateful to everyone who works with and supports them, together continuing to build a brighter future for children with disabilities and their families across the East Midlands.

Footprints need £5,066 to support one family for one year and £30,916 per month is needed to maintain and grow their services.

Footprints works with an amazing number of individuals and organisations across the East Midlands, and utilise every penny donated to support and enable children and families to achieve their full potential.

The charity needs your support as they move to their new home, and as well as raising valuable funds, there are many benefits to working with them, including training and workshop options and volunteer opportunities.

LUSSO HOMES transforming

the model of park home living

LUSSO Park Homes – Tye’s close reimagining the traditional concept of park homes into a luxurious, modern, and highly customizable living experience.

Here's how they have achieved this transformation:

Exclusive and Private

With just 9 homes, Tyes Close offers a rare opportunity for residents to enjoy a peaceful, low-density living environment. This exclusivity enhances the feeling of privacy, giving homeowners the luxury of space and serenity in a close-knit community. The limited number of homes ensures that Tyes Close remains a quiet and tranquil retreat, free from the hustle and bustle of larger developments. This makes it an ideal option for those seeking a relaxed, luxurious lifestyle in a serene environment.

Strong Community Feel

With only 9 homes, Tyes Close fosters a strong sense of community, where residents can get to know their neighbors and enjoy a more connected lifestyle. The limited number of homes makes social interaction more meaningful, while still allowing for plenty of personal space and privacy.

Luxury Living Redefined

LUSSO Park Homes has introduced a new level of luxury in park home living

by offering high-end finishes, modern architectural designs, and spacious layouts that resemble contemporary homes more than traditional park homes. These residences focus on comfort, style, and sophistication.

Sustainability and Eco-Conscious Design

Customizable and Personalized Homes

Offering a highly customizable living experience, LUSSO allows homeowners to personalize everything from the interior layout to the finishes, ensuring that each home is tailored to individual preferences and lifestyles. This bespoke approach is key to the transformation of park home living.

Private Landscaped Gardens

Every Lusso home comes with a beautifully designed private garden, crafted to provide a peaceful retreat for homeowners and maintained within the service charge.

Instead of traditional fencing, Lusso homes feature natural laurel hedges with the option of mesh in between the growing laurel for those with Pets,

maintaining privacy while allowing a soft, natural transition between neighbouring properties

Avoiding the 'Squashed' Feeling

Unlike many typical park home communities where homes are often closely packed together, Lusso ensures that its 9 park homes are spread out. This extra space allows residents to enjoy more privacy, distance from neighbours, customize their outdoor areas, adding garages, decking, summer houses and hottubs, giving residents a greater sense of privacy and seclusion, ideal for those who have pets, so you can enjoy the peace and tranquillity of their own space without feeling overlooked by neighbours & the freedom to make the most of their outdoor living areas.

Direct Control Over Utilities:

Unlike many park home communities where utilities are centrally managed, Lusso Park Homes allows residents to directly manage their electric, water, and gas services. This means:

Homeowners receive their utility bills directly from providers, giving them transparency and control over their usage and expenses.

No Markups, Since the utilities aren't managed by the park management, there are no additional fees or markups, ensuring that residents pay standard rates for their consumption.

HILLBILLY HORROR NIGHTS at Notts Maze

This Halloween season, Notts Maze presents its most terrifying event yet: Hillbilly Horror Nights. Running 4 nights only this October, this scare maze promises to bring nightmares to life for thrill-seekers and horror fans alike

Step into the depths of a twisted maze where backwoods horrors lurk behind every corner, and the only thing standing between you and safety is your courage. The Labyrinth Hillbilly Horror Scare Maze is packed with jump scares and spine-chilling atmospheres.

Deep within the sprawling fields of Notts Maze lies Whitley Farm, a once-thriving agricultural haven now shrouded in terror and darkness. Legends whisper of the Whitley family, whose isolation and suspicion of outsiders led them down a path of madness and horror.

Once, Whitley Farm was a picture of prosperity, its cornfields stretching as far as the eye could see. But with the arrival of a sinister force from the depths of the earth, the land itself became corrupted, and the Whitley family fell victim to its malevolent influence. As the crops wilted and died, so too did the sanity of the Whitleys. Consumed by visions and whispers from the darkness, they turned on one another in a frenzy of violence. Those who dared approach the farm vanished without a trace, their anguished cries lost in the night.

Now, Whitley Farm stands as a grim testament to the family's tragic demise, a place where nightmares roam freely and the boundary

between the living and the dead is blurred. Adventurers brave enough to venture into the farm's labyrinthine corn maze must navigate its twisting paths while evading the vengeful spirits of the Whitley family. But beware, for the darkness that claimed Whitley Farm still hungers for souls. Will you emerge unscathed from the clutches of the hillbilly curse, or will you become its next victim?

The event will be open on select nights, with gates opening at 6:30 PM. Hillbilly Horror Nights is not recommended for the faint-hearted. Visitors can expect a night of terrifying entertainment, with the maze taking an average of 45 minutes to complete. In addition to the scare maze, Notts Maze will offer refreshments and themed Halloween treats to keep the adrenaline pumping.

Tickets are selling fast for Hillbilly Horror Nights, and we encourage people to book early to avoid disappointment. For those who survive the maze, Notts Maze will also be hosting additional family-friendly Halloween activities during the day.

Create your own Spooky Halloween Doorway

This Halloween, turn your home into the talk of the town with a delightfully spooky doorway, courtesy of Dobbies Garden Centres.

Whether you’re welcoming trick-or-treaters or being the the ghostess with the mostest and hosting a frightfully fun gathering, Dobbies’ Stylist, Rebecca Stanton explains how Dobbies’ range of decorations and a touch of DIY, will help you create an entrance that’s both eerie and inviting.

Rebecca recommends starting your Halloween masterpiece with a mix of real and faux pumpkins. She says: “Arrange pumpkins on the steps leading up to your door or in clusters on your porch. Carve some with ghoulish faces and leave others intact

Faux pumpkins are a great investment as they can be reused year after year, while real pumpkins add authenticity and a fresh autumn scent.

“Illuminate your spooky scene with an array of lanterns, placing them strategically to cast eerie shadows and highlight your pumpkin display,” recommends Rebecca.

Dobbies offers a variety of fa-boo-lous lantern styles, from classic black metal to the Music Laughing Jack O’Lantern, £10.99, perfect for creating a fun and gourdly glow. Consider using battery-operated LED candles for safety and convenience - no tricks here, just treats!

“No haunted house is complete without cobwebs”, explains Rebecca. “Drape them across your doorway, over bushes, and around your lanterns to add an

abandoned, haunted house feel. The key to a realistic look is to stretch the webs thinly and unevenly, ensuring they cling to surfaces and create the illusion of long-forgotten corners.”

To finish off, Rebecca says: “Don’t forget the details that complete your spooky scene. Accessories like a haunted door knocker can make a big impact and will be sure to have even the witches under your spell! Dobbies’ spooky death door knocker even has LED lights for eyes for extra skele-fun.”

TRICK OR TREAT?

Whether you prefer to simply stay in and watch your favourite scary flicks or would rather venture out to an event with family and friends, celebrating Halloween is for many of us one of the best times

Halloween is celebrated on October 31st, blending elements of ancient Celtic traditions, Christian influences, and modern customs. It's a time of spooky fun, creative costumes, trick-or-treating, and haunted houses. The holiday's origins trace back to the Celtic festival Samhain, when people believed the boundary between the living and

the dead blurred, allowing spirits to roam the earth. Over time, this evolved into the Halloween we know today. Many embrace the holiday's spooky vibe with horror movies, and festive decorations. We dress up in our scariest costumes, indulge in our favourite sweet treats and share our best ghost stories, popular Halloween symbols include jack-o'lanterns, black cats, skeletons, and witches.

When Halloween began, it was called the festival of Samhain and was part of the ancient Celtic religion in Britain, as well as other parts of Europe. When the summer months drew to a close, it was the belief of the Celts that the barrier that protected our world from that of ghosts became extremely thin, allowing freakish creatures with peculiar powers to roam freely on Earth. Spooky! In America, the holiday has been the cause for massive celebration for decades, and

this is thought to be because of Irish immigrants who came in the 19th century and increased its popularity.

Other countries celebrate October 31 differently, and in Mexico, Latin America and Spain, the events continue until 2 November, which is known as All Soul’s Day, which commemorates those that have passed over and who are believed to have returned to their earthly homes on Halloween. In Ireland, Halloween is still celebrated as much as it ever was and traditionally, fires are lit and barmbrack, yeasted bread with sultanas and raisins, is eaten.

Maybe you’ll take the children trick or treating or perhaps you will attend an exciting event at a stately home that you have never been to before. Either way, remember that when you put your mask on, you will be honouring a longstanding history of horror!

TRUESTORIESCRIME HALLOWEEN SCAREFEST

The Museum’s popular Condemned event gets a refresh with a host of new Victorian tales this Halloween.

The National Justice Museum in Nottingham has launched an updated version of it’s popular Halloween event, Condemned. Where previous years have looked at Georgian stories of crime and punishment, the brand new event for 2024 explores the true stories of Victorian Nottingham’s criminal past.

Infamous for being a place where a person could be imprisoned, tried, and executed, the National Justice Museum is based in Nottingham’s former County Gaol, and has had a court on site for nearly 650 years. The Criminal Courtroom, which you can see on a visit to the Museum, dates back to the 1870s, so would be where all of the real people in Victorian Condemned would have received their sentence. Victorian Condemned is led by one of the museum’s team of expert historical interpreters, in full period costume as they lead visitors through the authentic spaces in this Grade II* listed building.

Discover the disturbing true crimes that landed people in Gaol throughout the Victorian era, and stand in the dock where those found guilty heard their fates. Learn more about the gruesome crimes that brought them to Shire Hall’s courtroom. Finally, visit the dark cells where the condemned spent their final hours before finally being escorted to the courtyard, where the gallows loom and bodies were laid to rest. Hear stories of defendants like Joseph Tucker, arrested in 1885 for the brutal murder of his wife; Mary Ann Parr, accused of killing her child in 1863; and William Saville, who’s crime was so gruesome his public execution in 1844 caused even more deaths than the murders he was found guilty of.

Victorian Condemned runs on selected dates in October and November, with tours at 6pm & 7pm. For more information, and to book your tickets, visit nationaljusticemuseum. org.uk, call 0115 952 0555, or pay them a visit on High Pavement, Nottingham. Please note, this event is unsuitable for under 18s.

AT JAMES ALEXANDER BUILDING

A BRAND NEW interactive Halloween pop-up experience will be taking place at the James Alexander Warehouse this month, hosted by canalside dining, leisure and events destination, Binks Yard, in partnership with scare attraction company, Outbreak Nottingham.

Located at The Island Quarter, the new temporary attraction launched on 12 October and will run for three weeks at the disused warehouse that was formally part of Boots’ main research, production and storage facility dating back to 1800s.

During the experience, thrill seekers will be transported to the scene of a chemical outbreak at a secret scientific test facility. There they’ll be racing against the clock to make it through the ‘scare maze’ in the James Alexander Warehouse, where live actors transformed into scary inhabitants lurk, awaiting visitors at every corner.

The one-of-a-kind event will run from 5.00pm – 10.00pm on weekdays, and 2.00pm – 10.00pm on weekends.

A special ‘family friendly’ experience will be created for families with children on the Saturday and Sunday dates from 2.00pm – 5.00pm, while older guests can buckle up for a truly spine-tingling

experience, complete with jump scares, as night falls from 5pm onwards.

Ben Hicklin, head of events at Binks Yard, said: “This is an exciting next step for the ongoing development of our events offering, after launching our huge outdoor stage and screen, investing in a cover for our outdoor terrace and expanding into our second outdoor area, the Cargo Park.

“This October, Outbreak Nottingham’s Scarefest offers a chance to explore the James Alexander building for the first time in years, showing an example of the creative ways the space can be used, and we’ve worked with local promoters as well as professional and amateur actors from across the city to bring it to life.

“It’s set to be a fantastic event, the likes of which haven’t been seen in Nottingham before, and together with the team at Outbreak, we look forward to welcoming thrill seekers next month.”

Once guests have completed the scare maze, they will be escorted back to Binks Yard to enjoy exhilarating and family fairground rides, as well as an external food court and bar. Outbreak Nottingham’s Scarefest launched on 12 October.

Food & Drink

RAYMOND'S

The newest restaurant in the city certainly has style, but what about the food?

"In the old Oscar and Rosies site in Hockley (which was previously the old Mondo Comico site –jeeeez I feel OLD) a little bit of magic has happened. From the outside the building looks like a mix between a library from the 70’s and petite fire station tower but after months of hard work it has been transformed into a very stylish restaurant. Inside there is minimal decoration, thoughtfully curated art on the walls and an embrace of the 60-70’s bones of the building with dark wood and vinyl seating.

The dining room and bar look very grown up, simple and sophisticated, we hoped it was a sign of things to come. The Northerner had previewed the menu online and found it lacking, nothing really jumped out at him but I assured him after weeks of following the social media account that the chicken and tomato dishes looked great.

When we got there we were shown to a window sill and 2 stools, as we sat down and tried to get comfy we realised that we couldn’t. As there was no ‘table’ for us to put our legs under on this window (others did have them) we had to sit side saddle and my legs swung from the stool like a child in a hairdressers chair. We asked if we could move to a table and after a quick scan of the bookings were advised there had been a ‘no show’ so we could sit at one of the lower tables but they would need the table back in 90 minutes. Challenge accepted.

The small menu was well complimented by the specials being served that day and we found a good selection of dishes and ordered drinks. The wine list at Raymond’s is impressive and it will always hold a special place in my heart for serving Cremant (French sparkling wine NOT from the Champagne region but just as good).

We ordered our selection of small plates and finished with a question mark (as I assume everyone does). The question mark says ‘Is that enough?’, ‘Have we over ordered?’ and the server immediately reassured us it was a good selection, I felt a strange sense of pride.

The menu is sorted into snacks, plates and specials (containing smaller and larger dishes). We went for the Salumi croquette (weird way to spell salami), heritage tomato, fried chicken, confit potato and the sirloin. The croquettes arrived first and I now realise the spelling was a

I like eating out, trying new restaurants and being on the receiving end of great hospitality. I am a mum with 2 children (one baby, one 9 year old) so I include how the places I visit work for families. I have worked in bars, cafes, restaurants and pubs for most of my life. Good places should be supported, celebrated and shared.

NOTTINGHAM FOOD CRITIC

nod to the filling – inside was a cheesy halloumi béchamel. Not being a big fan of the sheep's cheese I let The Northerner polish them both off but appreciated the tomato topping with the warmth of the cured meat really rounding off the flavour.

Next to arrive were the heritage tomato and potato dish. The tomatoes had a light flavour and were overpowered by the cheese (in both volume and flavour), on their own though they were beautifully fresh and the salty, richness of the anchovy was a nice contrast. The confit potatoes had a earthiness and were really comforting but by this point I had deja vu. They too were sat on top of a cheesy sauce with a red ingredient contrast and onion element. Looking back I should have scrutinised our order a little more, in hindsight I don’t know what I expected, but I was keen to try something else.

When the chicken arrived I was relieved there was no cheese. Served very simply it was a perfectly fried piece of chicken. Crispy on the outside with the chicken still moist and juicy. The herb salad that accompanied it meant each mouthful was a variation on the last and the spiced caramel sauce brought a sweetness and heat that made the dish memorable. This was the dish of the meal.

We finished the meal with the sirloin. When we ordered it The Northerner had said ‘for nearly £40 it will have sides’ but knowing the ‘small plate’ approach and having seen a few photos I didn’t want to burst his bubble. When it arrived alone on the platter I asked ‘Is that butter on top?’. Why would there be solid butter on top of a steak? We found out a few seconds later; unfortunately the meat was (at best) room temperature and with the butter refusing to melt I did a half arsed job of trying to spread it over the sirloin.

It was a high quality piece of meat and I am sure it must have been marinated in something prior to cooking to get the all over colour but it wasn’t warm enough and over done. We had a few bits and then gave the rest up as a bad job. I always want to give new places the benefit of the doubt and feel sure that had we ordered better the meal would have a higher score, but that steak is the reason we decided to head somewhere else for pudding."

A NU WAY TO DRINK BEER

A Nu way to drink beer: introducing NuWave, a range of mood enhancing alcohol-free beers. NuWave alcohol-free beers are all about the added upsides! Expertly crafted using a powerful blend of mood enhancing botanicals and health supporting biotics, NuWave gives you the buzz and sociabilit you’d expect from a ‘regular’ beer.

NuWave is a new range of greattasting, mood-enhancing, alcoholfree beers. Crafted with decades of brewing expertise, a powerful blend of mood enhancing botanicals and newly developed postbiotics to support metabolic and tummy health, NuWave’s mission is to develop the tastiest alcoholfree beers on the planet, and then reintroduce the most desirable attributes associated with regular drinking.

NuWave launched this summer with two core beers in eye-catching, bold, slimline cans. The Lager is clean, crisp and refreshing, while the Hazy Pale is packed with juicy, hoppy goodness. Both contain less than 59 calories per can and are certified gluten-free and both vegan friendly – available in sharable six and 12-packs from Amazon, alcohol-free online stores and direct from the NuWave website (RRP £19 and £35).

NuWave is an exciting new start-up. The team have decades of brewing and scientific development experience, created by industry leaders who’ve grown tired of being told that we can’t have it all. Brendan WIlliams, Co-Founder of NuWave says, “The alcohol-free segment may have come a long way already in recent years, but this is just the beginning. With the advances in the science of botanicals and biotics we can now offer consumers all the upsides of drinking alcohol, without the downsides’

NuWave actively targets the GABAreceptors in the brain, which is what happens after one or two alcoholic drinks, activating those feelings that make drinkers feel relaxed, chatty and

happy. At the same time, the tastebuds are enticed with a beer that is full of flavour. And in a world first, NuWave contains innovative postbiotics to support metabolism and gut health… helping drinkers have happier guts rather than enlarging them. Got your attention yet?

Brendan WIlliams, Co-Founder of NuWave adds, “At NuWave, our mission is to redefine what beer can be for the next generation of drinkers, offering them not just a drink, but a way to enhance their social moments and support their wellbeing. Driven by a wave of alternative spirits, RTDs and soft drinks crafted with botanicals, adaptogens and neurotransmittertargeting compounds, the functional drinks category is growing rapidly all over the world as more drinkers seek healthier options to support their choice to ‘sober socialise’.

The fastest adopters of this movement are the Gen Zs, challenging societal norms in plenty of ways, including wearing their ‘sober’ and ‘moderator’ badges with pride. This is what NuWave stands for: Redefining how you experience social moments, demanding more from life and defying convention. NuWave is at the cutting edge of drinks innovation, where benefits take priority, and drinkers don’t have to compromise. NuWave has developed a proprietary blend of natural functional adaptogens and postbiotics to take the category to the next level. We're proud to be at the forefront of this exciting movement, crafting beers that taste great and

make you feel even better."

With plans already in motion to launch into Europe, the US and alcohol-free hotspots like Australia, NuWave is an upstart with big brand ambition, seeking to establish A Nu way to drink beer and make a positive contribution to the world, one drink at a time. Tasting great and making you feel great. Mark your diary. You heard it here first. Today is the first day on a new journey, expanding what drinking (beer) can and will be.

Nottingham Steps into the Spotlight

Old Market Square in Nottingham is set to take centre-stage this autumn as Opera North launches its latest season at the Theatre Royal with a series of compelling images to be displayed around the city and used online.

The Leeds-based arts organization, which tours across the north of England, has created a series of impactful visuals specifically for Nottingham with some of the principal singers from the upcoming season pictured in various instantly recognisable locations around the historic square.

Emily Simpson, Director of Audiences at Opera North, said:

“Nottingham is one of our regular touring venues and opera is something the residents can feel proud of hosting as part of their wider cultural offer. By putting this well-known area of the city in the limelight, we’re looking to underline to residents that opera belongs to them –and, just like the city itself, that it offers a warm welcome to everyone, regardless of age or background. We invite the people of Nottingham to step into opera with us this autumn.”

Other initiatives to make it easier for audiences to come and experience opera include a matinee performance for easier travel, English subtitles at all performances, and sign-interpretation, audio description and touch tours on selected dates. New-to-opera ticket schemes are also available, encouraging newcomers to experience opera for the first time, including the Try it ON scheme offering £20 tickets for first-timers, and £10 tickets for Under 30s and students.

The company’s latest season, which arrives at the Theatre Royal, Nottingham, in November, offers magic, mystery and magnificent music in abundance. A

revival of The Magic Flute sees James Brining returning to Opera North to direct a production for all ages packed with fantasy, romance and daring. The adventure sees Prince Tamino embarking on a quest to save Pamina, daughter of the Queen of the Night, from the clutches of Sarastro, the Priest of the Sun, with plenty of surprises along the way and Mozart’s breathtaking score underpinning all the action. The magic continues with A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Benjamin

Britten’s take on Shakespeare’s muchloved comedy, featuring a host of well-known characters including Bottom the weaver and the mischievous Puck. Completing the trio is Gilbert and Sullivan’s hilariously inventive Gothic parody, Ruddigore, with a reluctant villain and modest maiden joined by an assortment of amiable ghosts and scary professional bridesmaids. Directed by Jo Davies, the production was hailed as an instant classic in its first run.

CELEBRATING 25 YEARS of stand up

On 2 October 2000, John Bishop stepped onto the stage at the Frog and Bucket in Manchester to perform his first ever comedy gig in front of just a handful people. John was working by day in the pharmaceutical industry, but that night, as he picked up the mic and performed for the very first time, he changed his life forever.

Now, a quarter of a century later, the comedy superstar is embarking on his tenth stand-up tour John Bishop: 25, to celebrate his incredible 25-year career. And to mark this special anniversary, every ticket at every show will be just £25.

John Bishop: 25 kicks off on 2 October 2025 at the Plymouth Pavilions and then travels to arenas across the UK and Ireland including a date at Nottinghams Motorpoint Arena on 16Th October before culminating in Belfast on 1 November 2025. The tour includes a return show on 13 October 2025 to the Frog and Bucket in Manchester, 25

years since it all began. The £25 tickets go on sale on Friday 11 October 2024 from JohnBishopOnline.com.

John Bishop said: “I can't believe that next year it will be 25 years since I first performed at the Frog and Bucket in Manchester. It's been a rollercoaster! And I can't thank the fans enough who have supported me all the way. I wanted to mark the anniversary with a brand-new tour and do something to say thank you – so every ticket throughout the tour will be £25. I really hope you can come and celebrate with me.”

Since that first gig in October 2000, John has achieved so much in his incredible career. Within three years John was playing to sold out arena audiences across the country and released the fastest selling stand-up DVD in UK history.

He has achieved huge success with a number of his own comedy, entertainment and documentary TV shows including: ‘John Bishop’s Australia’ (BBC1), ‘John Bishop’s Britain’ (BBC1); ‘John Bishop’s Only Joking’ (Sky1); ‘The John Bishop Show’ (BBC1); ‘The John Bishop Christmas Show’ (BBC1) and ‘John Bishop’s Gorilla Adventure’ (ITV1), ‘John Bishop’s Ireland’ (ITV1) and four series of the

critically acclaimed ‘John Bishop: In Conversation With…’ (W Channel) which saw him chatting one to one with some of the biggest names in entertainment, music and sport. Other TV credits include two series of ’The John Bishop Show’ (ITV1), ‘Doctor Who’ (BBC1) and the documentary John & Joe Bishop: Life After Deaf (ITV1).

Last year, John starred in the UK & Ireland tour of Mother Goose with Ian McKellen, which included a hugely successful run in London’s West End.

Earlier this year, he embarked on a major sold-out international tour – Back At It - his first stand-up show in two years, which culminates at the London Palladium in April 2025. The tour includes legs in Europe, USA, Canada, New Zealand and Australia.

The first event at The Palais in Nottingham - organised by The Palais Northern Soul Club - saw all generations taking to the dancefloor on Saturday 5 October.

Known for its soulful music, sharp fashion and athletic dance moves, Northern Soul has been undergoing a renaissance in recent years with club nights springing up around the UK.

While Wigan Casino was the epicentre of the scene in the 1960s, the genre quickly took hold across industrial and working class towns, sweeping into the Midlands in the 70s, with Nottingham’s The Palais attracting ‘Soulies’ from around the region for its famous all dayers.

Now a second night has been announced due to the exceptional demand on Sunday 20 April 2025 for a Bank Holiday special, running from 6pm to midnight.

Will Foot, one of the DJs on the returning night, said: “Seeing multiple generations of soul music lovers happily dancing alongside each other on a perfect dance floor in a beautiful room with an unbelievable sound system was a joy to behold. Long live The Palais.”

Mal Redman, long-time Nottingham Northern Soul promoter, said: “It was great to see a full dancefloor all night with happy smiling faces - it was as though we have never been away! We are looking forward to Northern Soul on Bank Holiday Sunday in 2025, when The Palais will be 100 years old.”

The Palais Northern Soul Club added: “We’re thrilled to bring back Northern Soul to The Palais. We hear you loud and clear, this was one of our most requested nights by nostalgic movers to first-time flyers. Whether it’s your 1st or 100th, come and join the Northern Soul community. Turn up your collars, lace up your nice shoes and get back to the floor!”

Fans can visit the Saloon, another room that played an integral part of the story, where Queen Charlotte and Lady Danbury are seen playing an intense game of chess and stroll through the Water Terraces where Blenheim Palace is featured again in the season when the two older Featherington sisters

FARM CONTRACTOR SAYS THANKS TO LINCS & NOTTS AIR AMBULANCE

James Bannister’s left arm had to be amputated but believes the speed the air ambulance got him to hospital gave him the best outcome.

It was 6 August 1998 and James had gone to work as normal, harvesting potatoes on the farm where he worked near Retford, Notts. He recalls the incident: “I had just finished a field and was talking to the trailer driver after cleaning the harvester out, next thing I remember is fighting against the harvester. I cannot remember climbing onto the harvester and I have no recollection as to why I did so, but I did and somehow my arm got caught on the machine’s rollers and powerless to stop, I was pulled further in. My trailer man heard my screams and ran to the cab to turn the tractor off by which time I was in the machine up to my shoulder”.

James vividly remembers those early moments. “I was up to my neck in the roller, luckily my mate stopped the machine and came up to me asking what to do? I said get the big bar on the shaft and wind the harvester backwards, but as he released the

pressure my arm started to bleed heavily as if someone was tipping a jug of water on to the ground. The trailer man then raised the alarm and farm staff, LNAA and other emergency services soon arrived.”

The LNAA team gave James pain relief and the doctor remained by his side for over two hours, ready to amputate his arm if necessary whilst he was being freed. Finally, James was released and carried to the air ambulance. He said: “I had no feeling in my left arm and was asked to hold onto it with my right hand. When I looked at it, I knew it couldn’t be saved, as it kept falling off the side of the stretcher. It took just nine minutes to fly James to Sheffield Northern General Hospital, a journey that would have taken at least an hour by road. James signed his own consent form as he was taken to theatre to have his arm removed.

James will always grateful for what LNAA did. He said: “Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance is an invaluable service. The quick delivery to hospital saved my life. Nothing else compares to what they do.”

Today, some 26 years later, James now runs JLR Farm Services with his partner Lorraine. He has proved he can still do most of the work he did before the accident and drives his tractors with a ball on the steering wheel to allow him to steer one-handed. James is also Chairman of the National Association of Agricultural Contractors and an ambassador for farm safety via the Yellow Wellies farm safety campaign. He regularly gives talks on farm safety, to companies throughout the UK. As he said: “People are still having accidents with farm machinery. We are all aware of safety, but my accident shows how in a split second your life can change forever. Life is precious. I miss my arm and occasionally, when I am doing things, I still try and use it, but it is never going to be there again.”

ECZEMA sufferers can avoid flare-ups by being mindful of five things that cause flare-ups, an expert has said. Her tips also come at the same time as temperatures begin to drop, which can impact the life of those living with the condition.

Eczema is more than just a dry, itchy rash—it’s a chronic condition that affects nearly 1 in 10 people worldwide, causing red, inflamed skin and intense discomfort.

According to research, as many as 1 in 5 UK children currently suffer from the condition - and up to 83% of children who experience an eczema flare up have difficulties falling and staying asleep. Here, eczema expert Jae Rance, the founder of ScratchSleeves, and the coauthor of the book The Calm Skin Guide shares details of the top five causes of flare-ups, and how to best prevent them.

Cold Weather

Jae says: “As the colder weather starts creeping into the UK and we start turning the heating on, eczema sufferers are at a higher risk of flare-ups. Cold biting winds and dry indoor air can aggravate eczema by removing moisture from the skin triggering potential irritation. Wrap up warm to avoid sudden changes in body and skin temperature. Switching to a heavier, more greasy emollient will ensure that the skin barrier remains healthy and prevent cracking."

Fabric & Clothing Material

Jae says: “Certain fabrics and materials can irritate eczema. Wool, in particular, can aggregate sensitive skin by causing overheating, sweating, and itching. Additionally, synthetic materials like polyester can trap heat and sweat inside - causing further irritation. Avoid wearing materials that can aggravate eczema like polyester. If wearing a woolbased item to keep warm, wear a cotton layer underneath to prevent irritation to the skin.

Soaps and Detergents

Jae says: “Certain types of soap and laundry detergent contain fragrances and harsh chemicals that can irritate skin. Look out for

perfumes and optical brighteners as these can irritate the skin and are designed to remain in fabrics after washing. Use hypoallergenic, fragrance-free detergents to ensure the risk of irritation is low, and clothes do not cause discomfort. However, there is no evidence to suggest that the enzymes in biological detergents trigger eczema flareups"

Scratching at Irritated Skin

Jae says: “Scratching at irritated skin or existing eczema flare-ups can worsen the symptoms.

Scratching too much can cause bleeding, which can in turn cause infections. Apply pressure to the area that itches to provide temporary itch relief without causing any harm to your skin. Tapping the itch can also help. For little ones who are unable

to stop scratching - consider investing in some scratch-proof clothing, like ScratchSleeves."

Stress

Jae says: “In some eczema sufferers, stress can be a cause of potential flare-ups. Whilst the connection between stress and eczema isn't fully understood, it is known that emotional stress can cause the body to release hormones such as cortisol that weaken the skin's natural barrier. Try to find ways to alleviate stress. Try a digital detox, meditation, or reading to relax you in your free time. Try to ensure a good night's sleep, and incorporate an exercise routine into your day."

Ways to Weather Winter Hair Damage

Walking out the door with wet hair won’t cause you to catch a cold - that’s a myth - but keep in mind that hair is vulnerable to frizz and static when it's damp and when hair cuticles are wide open. Also, it stands to reason that water expands when it freezes, which means frozen water trapped in the hair shaft can result in breakage. Make sure your hair is 100% dry before walking out the door. But first, shower it with love.

WASHING

Washing with very hot water can contribute to dry skin and scalp, and hair. Temptation to turn up the heat on cold mornings may be strong but keep the shower temperature moderate or comfortably warm to preserve your natural oils. Avoid anything that strips the hair, including shampoo. This is a fantastic

a detergent-free hair cleanser like New Wash (£44.00) which will lift away dirt and impurities but keep the natural protective barrier intact. Made with essential oils and saturated fats, this biodegradable formula is the answer to happy hair and scalps. Squeeze out New Wash once you’re done in the shower and remember to handle wet hair with care; it’s here that it’s at its most elastic and fragile.

DRYING

Air dry whenever possible with the help of Hair Balm (£39.00), Hairstory’s leave-in conditioning product also prevents static and comes with sell-out success. But if you must use a hairdryer, set it at its lowest temperature and hold it at least 6 inches (15cm) away from your scalp.

A condition known as ‘bubble hair’ occurs when water within the hair is heated and

turns to steam, causing bubbles on the hair shaft. The result is brittle hair, which is more prone to breakage and split ends. To help reduce the chances of this happening, use a microfiber towel to absorb excess dampness and ALWAYS apply a heat protection product with copolymers, proteins, and essential oils as this will insulate hair from heat and prevent moisture loss. Hairstory Dressed Up (£39.00), a natural hair-protector and setting lotion will do the trick.

Some alcohols – ethanol (or ethyl alcohol), propanol, denatured alcohol (or alcohol denat) – can strip moisture. But others do the opposite. Look for cetyl, stearyl, cetearyl, myristyl, behenyl and lauryl alcohols in the ingredient lists. Hairstory proudly lists all its ingredients and their usage online so you can become your own investigator and be safe in the knowledge that you’re making good hair decisions.

WEARING

Love them or hate them, hats do a great job of keeping us warm, but hat hair is not a vibe. To avoid that tell-tale crease encircling your head, choose a hat that’s loose enough to fit your finger between hat and head and of course, make sure your hair is dry before it goes on. Fabric choices can make a difference too; heavy fabrics tend to weigh hats down and flatten hair whereas cotton hats also decrease static compared to synthetic material.

If you still fall victim to this flat hair faux pas, reach for Hairstory’s POWDER (£39.00), a dry shampoo-volumizer hybrid that swifty injects body into lack-lustre roots, with a single pump.

Choose looks meant to be worn close to the head like tight ponytails, braids, twists, or low buns that won’t get deflated. In fact, for hair that tends toward bushy, a hat can be a great way to contain it. If you like to add texture by twisting hair or create waves by coiling it, use a hat to not only keep you warm but also to “set” hair while you wear it.

For shorter cuts and up-dos, Hairstory’s WAX (£37.50) is perfect for adding hold without the ridged feel of hair gel and can also be used to tame frizz/flyaways as well as add curl definition. The hat-proof formula offers a matte finish, ideal for those that favour an effortless, undone look away from the high shine of traditional hair wax.

EMBRACE THE SEASON

Fielding & Nicholson are the independent tailors with studios in London (on Sackville St by Savile Row), Cheshire, Manchester, Manhattan and Zurich. What's key for you too, is that they have tailors who travel the length and breadth of the country visiting clients, no matter where they are based.

AUTUMN IS A GOOD SEASON FOR PAIRED DOWN TAILORING

You can achieve this by wearing separates rather than a suit. Pair tweed or corduroy trousers with a crisp white shirt and a knit sweater for a relaxed yet sophisticated look. For the right setting, a family get together or a lunch date, tailored trousers and a good quality knit can eliminate the need to wear a suit.

MIX TEXTURE

Add a touch of texture to your outfit by mixing and matching wool blazers with chinos in earthy tones like olive, navy, or camel for a laid-back yet polished look. Corduroy is also great. It’s timelessly stylish and looks good in a range of colours, but you can’t go wrong with navy.

EMBRACE THE SEASON

Elevate your style with two-piece and three-piece suits in warm, autumnal

fabrics such as wool flannel, tweed, or herringbone for a timeless and seasonallyappropriate look.

WRAPPING UP

Not all coats are suitable to be worn with a suit. My rule here is to stick to the look championed by stylish men in the 1940s; King Edward VIII, or Hollywood stars like Cary Grant. Go for trench coats, Crombie’s, Macs or Chesterfields – the more classic the better. Avoid peacoats or double breasted coats in general, and certainly avoid jackets or anything padded.

DON’T WHEEL OUT THE SUMMER SUIT

As tempting as it may be to repurpose a summer suit, we should always avoid lightweight and summery fabrics such as linen or seersucker in autumn. They will not provide enough insulation against the cold weather, and they look out of place in an autumn setting.

THE AUTUMN COLOUR PALETTE

Steer clear of overly vibrant or summery colours in your suit choices. Opt for deep, rich hues like burgundy, forest green, or charcoal grey that are more in tune with the season.

LESSONS IN LAYERING

Of course it’s cold outside in autumn, but this is often mixed with central heating in offices, shops and other public buildings. Consider layering to help to

keep cool when you know you may spend a day being inside and outside. A cashmere sweater is super soft and breathable.

SOCKS

If you wanted to introduce a splash of colour or print, then this can be done with socks. The ankle could provide the opportunity for bolder colours, such as red or green, or paisley prints.

IT’S ALL IN THE LINING

Similarly, another opportunity to be bolder is provided by your suit lining, ideally in silk. Speak to your tailor to customise something in a geometric design, stripes, tile prints, or even an illustrative or artwork inspired print.

ACCESSORIZE FOR THE SEASON

Invest in a cashmere or Merino scarf in a good tone, go for navy, grey, camel, but avoid anything patterned or printed. You can also wear gloves, but rather than anything made of wool, I’d recommend lined gloves in vintage leather, faux leather or suede. The best colours to choose here would be darker hues (you don’t want people to see your gloves before they see the rest of you!) Black is great, also charcoal or deep navy.

A jewellery brand inspired by a love of colour, individuality and vintage sparkle

Created by Jane Hebden, an award-winning jewellery and watch designer, Amelia Scott is a new London-based accessories brand that encourages its community to celebrate individuality and embrace the wonderful world of colour - and how to wear it well. Launching at the end of June 2023, the brand is set to become a go-to for wearable, unexpected palettes and sophisticated sparkle.

Previously Head of Creative at a well-known watch and jewellery brand, with the pieces she designed in the likes of Selfridges and Harvey Nichols, Jane was awarded Retail Jewellers 30 Under 30 Rising Star Award in 2020, and several Watch Pro Awards for pieces she designed over the years. Uninspired by the minimalist brands on the market, Jane has now decided

of industry experience to start designing pieces that reflect her own personal style and the fun she loves to have with accessories and colour.

The debut collection combines the founder's love for vintage, colour and sparkle. Rich greens, pinks, purples, yellows and oranges work in perfect harmony together. Entry price points start at £69 for jewellery, exiting at £159 for more intricate, ornate pieces – which are mostly made from 925 recycled sterling silver and embellished with colourful cubic zirconia.

The brand has also launched a range of statement scrunchies starting at £20, that can be stacked alongside the jewellery. Designed in London and handmade in the UK, they are packaged in a beautifully branded box that makes a perfect gift. All micro ranges in the debut

collection are cleverly curated in a way that ensures the pieces are both versatile and collectable and there is a clear guide on what can be worn together. Stacking has never been so easy. Even the sumptuous velvet packaging is standout in its own right –designed to excite the customer as much as what’s inside, making Amelia Scott perfect for gifting.

It’s an impressive journey for someone who didn’t follow the traditional career path; Jane attended university only briefly before leaving. She then started at her previous company at the age of nineteen as an apprentice in

digital marketing, before moving into the design team and becoming one of the most senior creatives in the business.

Jane Hebden added, “I started to find my most ‘colourful self’ during and after lockdown - wearing colour really does improve my mood and I wanted to share the joy of colours with others, which was my main motivation to start the brand.”

Always inclusive, always empowering, Amelia Scott pieces are designed to enable everyone to embrace colour, celebrate their uniqueness and feel their very best.

A little touch of Luxury

Priestleys was founded by local fashion academic Karrie Priestley, who was inspired by the little gifts her husband would leave for her before he left for a trip - part of his responsibility as a submariner for the Royal Navy Submarine Service. The brand now creates beautiful pieces from the best leathers in Europe. Everything is handmade and can be personalised, making it perfect for gifting. The brand also has also been awarded a full military license from the Ministry of Defence, and currently offers products carrying the ‘Dolphin’ emblem of the Royal Navy Submarine Service.

It's all about producing leather goods using age-old techniques, and making pieces to last a lifetime - and more. With a range of signature patterns, each leather accessory from Priestleys is designed with circular design

principles at its core, using traditional artisanal leather techniques. Every piece is hand cut, stitched and finished in the heart of Lincolnshire using the finest leathers from across Europe, making it the ultimate (responsible) indulgence, a luxury gift for yourself or a loved one to cherish forever.

The collection includes wallets, purses, cardholders, belts, trinket trays, personalised bookmarks, clutch bags and a pocket bag with luxury hardware. There is also a silk scarf and a range of bangles made from 24 carat gold or stainless steel, combined with leather offcuts from the other pieces in the collection. Leather comes from gold and silver-rated tanneries in Europe, all approved by the Leather Working Group to ensure sustainable practices, with only the finest full-grain, vegetable tanned leathers selected. These are known for

their quality, eco-friendly production methods, and exceptional durability. The leather is a by-product of the meat industry, which means Priestleys utilises materials that would otherwise go to waste. This commitment to circular design is evident in every one of the handcrafted accessories, ensuring longevity, repairability, and uncompromised luxury. The process and in-house crafting allows the brand to maintain full transparency, and to guarantee ethical production. The founders also continually

The family business was founded by Karrie Priestley in 2021, a fashion academic and lecturer at Nottingham Trent University, and her husband James. The story began with James’s time as a submariner. During his long patrols, he would be away for months, leaving behind handwritten letters for each week he was gone. Each note held a clue to the next, accompanied by a small gift or luxury. This heartfelt tradition inspired the couple to create little luxuries for others, crafting cherished memories that endure a lifetime, and can be passed on from person to person. The family’s links to the military are also illustrated in the collections. Priestleys has been awarded a full military license from the Ministry of Defence, and currently offers products carrying the ‘Dolphin’ emblem of the Royal Navy Submarine Service, which James Priestley serves with.

An Education for Life

A boarding school is a residential school where pupils live and study during the academic year. Currently there are approximately 500 such schools across England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland

Many boarding schools are housed in ancient buildings, combining beautiful, centuries-old architecture with modern classrooms and facilities.

Boarding schools offer pupils a top quality education, helping them to develop their skills and abilities. In the UK all boarding schools have to meet strict government standards on the quality of their teaching, accommodation and pupil care.

The term ‘boarders’ applies to pupils who live at the school, while ‘day pupils’ live at home and attend school during the day. Having a mix of both types of pupils creates a good social atmosphere.

At a boarding school, pupils usually live together in houses – there might be several of these in each school. Girls and boys will have separate accommodation and usually there will be at least one house parent living on site to look after them. The UK boarding school system is

split into three levels: Primary education is for children aged four or five up to 11 or 13. This may be referred to as primary school, infant school, junior school, pre-preparatory school or preparatory school.

Secondary education is for pupils aged 11 or 13 to 16. This may be referred to as secondary school, high school or senior school.

In the last two years of secondary school (age 14 to 16), most pupils study for GCSE qualifications.

Sixth form is for students aged 16 to 18. The two years are often called Lower Sixth and Upper Sixth. At sixth form level, most pupils take A-levels.

Boarding schools offer a wide range of subjects including maths, sciences, history, geography, drama, IT, literature, foreign languages and sport. All of these qualifications are highly regarded by universities, colleges and employers.

Applications to independent boarding schools are made directly to the school. Look on the school’s website or contact them to ask about the application process. Applications for state schools are usually handled by the local government authority.

Tuition at state schools is free of charge, but you will need to pay for boarding. For independent schools, you will need to pay for tuition and boarding. Boarding fees generally cover items such as accommodation, food and drink and laundry. You may be able to fund your studies with a scholarship or bursary. Ask the schools that you are interested in what they can offer.

Pupils may need to take an entrance exam, so you should check with the relevant school to find out about their specific requirements.

Raising Awareness of Bladder Cancer Symptoms and Tests

Bladder cancer occurs when there is a growth of abnormal tissue, known as a tumour, which develops the bladder lining. In some cases, the tumour spreads into the bladder muscle. The risk of developing men is 1 in 29 and lower in women at 1 in 89.

Smoking is the biggest risk factor in developing bladder cancer. Other factors that increase it’s likelihood include:

• Exposure to chemicals especially in jobs involving textiles, dyes, tanning, rubber, paints or plastics.

• Previous cancer treatments such as chemotherapy or radiotherapy.

• Having a catheter for a long time.

• Long term or repetitive UTI (urinary tract infections).

• Long term bladder stones.

Early detection of bladder cancer is extremely important as it significantly increases the chance of survival. If a bladder cancer is found early (at Stage 1) the survival rate is high, with around 8 in 10 people surviving 5 years or more.

Medical Negligence Case Study:

Rosina Blower’s story

Rosina Blower was born in 1933 and lived all her life in Warsop. She was a very charismatic and social person. She was married to George Johnson for 58 happy years and they had a family, George describe their wedding as a very full house surrounded by many family and friends.

Rosina sadly passed away on the 24th of March in 2017 as a result of bladder cancer that had gone undiagnosed for 9 years. Rosina started having stress incontinence urinary symptoms in 1996 and was being seen by her GP and the local Gynaecology Unit. At that time a cystoscopy and histology was undertaken which reported evidence of “keratinising squamous metaplasia” which is known to have a high risk of developing bladder cancer. Unfortunately those treating her had failed to recognise the significance of this finding which should have resulted in her being referred to a Urology Specialist for regular check-ups and monitoring.

Four years later in 2000 she was experiencing difficulties emptying her bladder and was told to use a self-catheter (referred to as ISC). This caused her to suffer reoccurring urinary tract infections.

Eight years later in 2008, her symptoms worsened and now included bladder pain. Another cystoscopy was performed and which reported widespread metaplastic changes stating that her whole bladder was covered with extensive squamous metaplasia. Her Dr wrote to her stating “I am pleased to report your histology report shows keratinised squamous metaplasia which is secondary to intermittent self-catheterisation

and some acute inflammation, so no great worries”. And she was again not referred to a Urologist for further cancer monitoring.

Over the next 8 years, Rosina was periodically being treated with DSMO, or Dimethyl Sulfoxide which is a powerful antiinflammatory, to address her bladder pain and antibiotics for intermittent UTI’s. In the spring of 2016 she highlighted new and worsening difficulties and became incontinent when her bladder became distended (or full). At this time a permanent catheter was fitted. Shortly after Rosina started experiencing increasing bladder pain and a new pelvic pain.

6 months later in the winter of 2016 she was admitted to hospital with even more deteriorating symptoms including vulval pain and urinary incontinence upon standing. She was only treated for a UTI, was discharged and sent home without further testing.

The following month in January 2017 Rosina returned to her GP with systemic symptoms of vomiting, poor appetite, weight loss and mobility issues. In general, she felt very unwell. Tests reported she had elevated inflammatory markers. She was admitted to the hospital for an ultrasound which identified a tumour in her bladder.

Two months later in March 2017 she had another cystoscopy which confirmed the tumour was a metastatic bladder carcinoma with bone involvement. Rosina’s tissue examination under microscope test results reported transitional cell carcinoma with extensive squamous differentiation, her test results also showed a fracture of the pelvis caused by disease rather than trauma.

At this stage radiotherapy was not a viable option for Rosina and she was given pallative care. She died later that month in March 2017.

Medical Negligence and Missed Opportunities for Early Diagnosis

A year after Rosina’s death her husband George contacted Hopkins Solicitors to investigate if there was any medical negligence involved in her care. It was determined by investigation that the treating doctors has not appreciated any of the red flags in her initial histology reports back in 2008, and that Rosina should have been told by her doctor that there was a future risk it could turn into cancer. She

should also have then been referred to a Urology Specialist for annual monitoring and testing. If the monitoring had taken place it is highly likely Rosina’s bladder cancer would have been diagnosed in it’s early stages and treatment could have been given to extend and improve her quality of life. Her husband’s medical negligence claim was successful in 2024. Like many bereaved spouses, George’s main purpose for the claim was not to receive money, but to ensure those involved in her care admitted liability and to ensure the Medical Trust’s involved were aware, hopefully ensuring other patients in the future wouldn’t experience the same mistakes.

Bladder Cancer Awareness

Early Detection is extremely important as treatment can significantly extend your life expectancy and reduce or eliminate the life changing symptoms associated with bladder cancer.

If you or a loved one is experiencing any of the symptoms listed above, ensure you seek medical investigations.

If you feel you or a loved one have had a delayed diagnosed of bladder cancer, contact a medical negligence solicitor to investigate if you have a valid negligence claim or pursue a complaint process, to ensure the Trusts involved in your care are aware there are errors in their diagnosing process so they can improve them for future patients.

If you do and say nothing, the trust may not know it needs to take steps to improve and prevent future mistakes.

Interesting new people about to enter your life will fill you with excitement, especially if there is some promise of romance. Home and family matters will need your attention, but you cannot perform miracles but financial problems and possible overspending will test a relationship to its maximum. Book a long overdue holiday.

Both intuition and common sense should tell you if someone is genuine or fake. If you can’t decide which path to follow, then sit back and wait because all will be revealed in the fulness of time. A project must not be abandoned just because someone else has planted seeds of doubt in your mind. Success must be worked at because nothing worth having comes easy, and there are no free lunches in the universe.

Written in The Stars

Involving yourself in other people’s problems and arguments will lead to misunderstandings and misinterpretations. Someone's attitude will test your patience, but some truths emerging will take everyone by surprise. Long overdue holiday arrangements give you much to look forward to, but a last-minute hitch could end up costing you a lot of unexpected money.

Although you have itchy feet, you are not in a position to suddenly take any drastic action, but realise that everything has cost money. Extra responsibilities may prove overwhelming, but nothing you cannot cope with. A pleasant surprise regarding finances will lift your mood from feeling despondent to feeling on top of the world and ready to spread your wings and fly.

Think twice before revealing things out that you would normally keep hidden out of sight. Your restlessness is growing stronger, but remember that it is charm that opens doors, not tactlessness. Romantic skies are lightening up your world and causing you to daydream about what might be with someone you develop feelings for.

You will succeed on making a huge impact on several people by displaying true grit and commitment. Refuse to take any more nonsense from someone who loves playing mind games and is always at the centre of every drama. Your time is valuable, so choose to spend it with people whom you share common interests with rather than those who drain you both emotionally and financially.

You like to be organised and in control, so you will not enjoy sitting at some crossroads, feeling completely bewildered and confused. You have had several hard decisions to make and none of them have been easy. Someone has a fascinating secret to share with you, but don’t believe everything you hear.

Important personal or legal matters come under scrutiny, and someone may not have been as honest and truthful as they portrayed. If your instincts warn you against a business or romantic venture, then take heed of the warnings. Your renewed self-confidence and assertiveness is helping you to make better decisions whilst attracting more suitable friendships.

If anyone can reach a much desired target or goal, you can, Never show your weaknesses nor your fears to anyone because they will cause you to look vulnerable. Always be soft spoken and don’t agree to commit to anything until you are absolutely sure that its what you really want. A romantic holiday could decide your fate regarding a relationship or some other matter.

Somebody is being rather prickly and on the defensive. It wont be long before you are onto their guilty An ongoing dispute could escalate, but your quick thinking will prevent you from entering a disaster zone. Finances need careful handling as debt is something that must definitely be avoided.

It's important to present yourself at your very best when meeting people or attending interviews. Your self control, confidence and poise gradually improving so you are bound to impress where it matters and with whom it counts. Something you have mulled over for weeks suddenly becomes clear, so don’t waste time thinking the worst.

The frantic pace of life and all its trials and upheavals continue, but you are doing amazingly well despite all the set backs and challenges. The state of your finances will weigh heavily on your mind, especially if you are short of money. Changes are happening, so it's important that you plan carefully for the future and follow your intuition regarding one particular personal or professional relationship.

CUT THE COST OF FLYING

EXPERT REVEALS HOW YOU CAN SAVE UP TO £100 PER PERSON ON YOUR FLIGHTS.

One of the easiest ways to cut costs while travelling is by ditching checked baggage and sticking to carry-on luggage only. According to Skyscanner, checked baggage can cost up to €120 (£101) per bag on flights from the UK, depending on the airline, making your flight much more expensive. Luggage shipping experts at My Baggage have revealed their top five tips for making the most of your carry-on space, to ensure you have everything you need without the extra baggage fees.

ASK FOR A DUTY-FREE BAG

Most airlines allow you to bring a dutyfree bag on the flight alongside your carry-on for no extra charge, a fact that most people don’t take full advantage of. If you find yourself with a few extra items that won’t fit in your carry-on, ask for a carrier bag in one of the duty-free shops after going through security and place your extra items inside. This will allow you to take them on your flight without having to pay extra. While it is essential to double check the policies of your airline, this trick could save you paying extra baggage fees even if your luggage doesn’t quite fit in your carryon.

BRING A PILLOW

Most airlines allow passengers to carry neck cushions alongside their carryon luggage at no extra cost. To make the most of this, you can remove the cushion from its cover and fill it with things like bikinis, rolled up t-shirts, and other small items to free up extra space in your carry-on bag. This trick allows you to bring more luggage at no extra cost, however, it is important to check the rules on bringing cushions with your airline first to avoid unexpected fees. Most airlines, including Wizz Air, Jet2 and EasyJet allow it, while it isn’t officially allowed with Ryanair.

CHOOSE YOUR AIRPORT OUTFIT WISELY

Another simple trick is wearing your bulkiest items on the flight, whether that’s a coat, boots, headphones, or any other larger items. If you’re desperate, wearing multiple layers can also allow you to bring more clothes with you, as airlines don’t charge for anything you are wearing. Although this isn’t the most comfortable way to travel, it works well in a pinch

when you can’t quite fit everything in your carry-on, and you can always remove some layers once you are seated on the plane.

DON'T PACK TOILETRIES

Things like shampoo and deodorant can take up a lot of space in a carry-on bag, and there are also limitations on how much you can take through security. Instead of packing them, consider buying your toiletries at the airport after getting through security. This way, you can take them on the flight in a duty-free bag. Alternatively, it may be cheaper to buy toiletries when you arrive at your destination, depending on where you are going. These prices can be checked online before you travel.

PACK EFFICIENTLY

The key to travelling with just a carryon is learning to pack smart. Create a list of essentials to avoid packing unnecessary items. You can make extra space inside your bag by using things like vacuum roll bags. These bags allow you to remove excess air by simply rolling them, significantly reducing the amount of space your clothes take up. It is also important to consider the carry-on size limit for the specific airline you are travelling with. By taking the maximum size allowed, you can make the most of your carry-on allowance.

Stewart, Managing Director of My Baggage has commented:

“Flying with just carry-on luggage is a great way of saving money while travelling, and it is easier than you think. Especially with budget airlines, size allowances for carry-on luggage can be very small, which is why it’s important to get creative when packing.

“Sticking to a carry-on not only saves you money, but also helps you avoid the hassle of waiting at baggage claim and eliminates the risk of lost luggage. By following these tips, you can make the most out of your carry-on allowance, keeping costs down without packing anything less than you need.”

Ryanair allows a cabin bag of up to 40x20x25cm, similar to Wizz Air’s allowance of 40x20x30cm, while EasyJet allows 45x36x20cm and Jet2 allows 56x45x25cm

Winter Sun

Break up the dull and drizzly winter months with a little burst of summer sun and escape to your own little paradise

Summer holidays are the perfect chance to get away in summer for a good soak in the sunshine, dip in the pool and most importantly, a well-deserved break. There is nothing more satisfying than packing your sun cream and jetting off to a relaxing destination, so why not do it all year round?

Lanzarote forms part of the Spanish Canary Islands which lie off the coast of Africa. Although these islands are a gorgeous location to unwind in the summer months, the autumn season proves just as pleasurable making October the perfect month to visit. With sizzling temperatures averaging at 27 degrees and cooling off to only 19 degrees at night, the weather is ideal for topping up your tan. Minimal rain and lower winds than the summer months provide a delightful atmosphere,

whisking you away to ultimate relaxation.

Visit Playa Blanca beach for a sandy day out, take your buckets and spades and enjoy the cool breeze of the sea or even go for a swim (if you’re feeling brave). This little seaside town has lots of places to eat traditional Spanish dishes, sip refreshing drinks and admire gorgeous scenery. Or for a more educational experience, venture to The Cactus Garden, a former quarry filled with over 1,000 different species of cactus on display to see.

Keep the kids entertained with all the fun days out Lanzarote has to offer. Take a guided tour through Cueva de los Verdes, a lava tube full of colour which now contains a concert hall, or visit the Rancho Texas Lanzarote Park, an animal park hosting regular sea lion and

bird shows, also home to cowboy lasso displays, a Gold Mine, pony rides and a super fun splash zone.

For a little taste of indulgence visit Mirador del Río, a clifftop structure of cafes and restaurants, artist designed in 1974, overlooking the mesmerising blue waters of Lanzarote. The full length glass windows give a panoramic view of the scenic beauty, perfectly complemented by the rocky surroundings in which the restaurant sits, giving a sophisticated feel to your dining experience.

Great places to eat, drink and visit provide the basis for a luxuriating and unwinding holiday under the Spanish sunshine. Put your feet up with a nice cold beverage and let the winter blues slowly melt away. All you have to do is book your flight.

Island Li fe

The most famous and popular of all of the Canary Islands, Gran Canaria is a stunning, sun-drenched island famed for its black lava and white, sandy beaches. Benefitting from over 3000 hours of sun annually, it is also the perfect destination for an end of season escape.

Whether you’d rather relax in an allinclusive resort or would prefer the independence of a self-contained holiday cottage, you’ll find the kind of accommodation to suit your holiday style in Gran Canaria.

If you’re in search of sea and sand, Maspalomas Beach is situated in the south and is recognisable not only for its expansive stretches of white sand, but also thanks to the historical lighthouse that is here. The lighthouse took an astonishing 28 years to build and now sits at the beginning of a busy promenade that buzzes with restaurants and small gift shops. If you prefer a beach that can offer a tranquil setting, consider the silent sands at Amadores, which is famed for its peacefulness, ideal for those ready to completely switch off for a week.

Adrenaline seekers will be in their element during a holiday to Gran Canaria, where the nature of the waves make the sea ideal for learning water sports in. Try your hand at surfing and wind surfing or if you’d prefer to see what happens beneath the surface, have a go at scuba diving. The warm temperature of the water in Gran Canaria is ideal for divers, as well as those that inhabit the sea. Expect to

see an endless array of amberjacks, turtles, barracudas and bream, amongst other species.

Thanks to its high peaks and clear, dark skies, Gran Canaria is also perfect for a spot of star gazing. The best vantage points can be found at the highest points of the island, so journey to The Temisas Observatory, a small lookout situated in a quaint rural village, offering exceptional views of the skies above the island.

To experience some of Gran Canaria’s historical charm, visit Vegueta, the old town district of Las Palmas, and spend the afternoon exploring its quaint cobbled streets. Head to the Santa Ana Cathedral, a recognisable landscape in the city and a gleaming example of gothic architecture with plenty of 17th and 18th century paintings to explore inside. For exceptional views of the city, climb to the top of the cathedral tower before making your way to the Santa Ana Square, an idyllic spot for a lazy lunch in the sunshine and a few hours of people watching. A visit to Vegueta also provides ample opportunity to explore museums, including the Casa de Colon, a Spanish style house that is now home to historical artefacts linking the Canaries to America.

Fish lovers should try caldo de pescado, a traditional fish soup, while those with a lighter appetite will be glad to discover that many of the items on menus will incorporate a variety of fruits and vegetables thanks to the pleasant climate of the island which enables such produce to be cultivated here. Gran Canaria truly comes alive during the evening and is the perfect destination for dining and drinking with friends. To round off your meal perfectly, be sure to ask for some ‘bienmasabe’, a sticky honey almond sauce, to accompany your dessert.

Being on holiday is a chance to sample delicious food that you may not try at home so while in Gran Canaria, immerse yourself in the island’s social eating scene, which combines traditional

5 Interior Trend Predictions for 2025

Biophilic design continues to play an important role this coming year, influencing and shaping colour palettes, shapes and textures. Meanwhile, colour is here to stay thanks to the popularity of dopamine décor. The rise of the smart home also sees tech being integrated as part of the interior. Amthal Karim, Head of Design at Furniture And Choice comments:

1. Biophilic design takes the spotlight

Biophilic design will continue to take centre stage in 2025 with nature playing a big role indoors. This trend’s popularity shows no signs of going away as more people seek calming interiors to escape the hectic modern world. Biophilic design has paved the way for trends like Japandi and Feng Shui which prioritise nature and decorating with intention. What we’re seeing now are hybrid trends influenced by biophilic design like ‘warm minimalism’ a pared-back and curated style where earthy textures like stone and wood play a big role.

Thanks to biophilic design, gone are the days of cold and stark minimal interiors with warmer tones like cream, beige and camel giving the home a cosy and inviting feel. This is about warming up monochrome interiors with natural textures and giving the space a cocoon-like feel. We’re also noticing accessories taking on an abstract art feel with posters framed or sculpture-like ornaments as the focal point of the room. Styling is key here as where you place the vases or sculptures enhances the natural flow of the room.

2. Bold colour is back in vogue

Sometimes the best way is to say it with colour and 2025 looks to be all about self-expression. The dopamine décor trend making waves on TikTok is all about making you happy, surrounding yourself with vivid colours and patterns, and injecting personality and fun into your home. For this look, no colours are off the table. You can use bold colours like pink, yellow, bright blues and orange as punchy accents or you can embrace colour drenching where you paint the walls and ceiling the same tone. It’s a simple (and affordable) way to

completely transform your interior will giving it a luxe feel. Colour drenching also goes hand in hand with the recent popularity of emphasising period features of the home by giving it character and interest. Whether it’s wall panelling or alcove choosing a standalone colour drenching will make a bold statement. For more ideas, read our guide on dopamine décor to achieve this look at home.

3. Go soft with curves and wavy shapes

Soft shapes and rounded edges naturally fit in with the room's flow, so it’s no surprise that curves and arches are still very much in. Whether through structural changes or furniture, curves help break up the sharp corners and straight lines to create an inviting and relaxing space. Transforming an alcove into an intimate corner by adding soft curves is a DIY project worth putting time and effort into or investing in a curved sofa to contrast the clean lines in the living room is also a good idea. Curved shapes and sculptures are also prominent when choosing accessories. The popularity of the donut vase on Instagram and Pinterest has paved the way for other beautiful, ornamental sculptures to shine. Mushroom-shaped

accessories are in vogue right now with mushroom touch lamps, glass mushroom lighting and fairy lights in the shape of mushrooms taking over social media. Wavy mirrors (another TikTok craze) are another great way to accent the room with their whimsical touch. They steal the spotlight by breaking up the clean lines with their soft zig zags and irregular lines.

4. Get nostalgic with deep earth tones

At the moment we’re loving relaxing earth tones like brown, orange and terracotta as they bring a dose of retro nostalgia. The popularity of earth tones also ties in with the Cafecore trend which recreates the look of your favourite coffee bar. Brown’s warm and comforting qualities help ground the room no matter which route you take. Lighter tones like beige or camel help bring out brown’s luxe vibe while mocha or espresso can be used as a rich accent helping highlight the details of the room or a colour pick for accessories. Go for clean, mid century-inspired furniture when decorating with this palette as it helps accentuate the different brown

tones and adds depth to the interior. r more ideas, read our guide on brown living room ideas to achieve this look at home.

5. Integrating tech or switching off

Integrating technology into the home used to mean it was hidden or concealed from view but now it’s starting to become part of the décor. This ‘smart home’ concept is about saving space and making your home feel seamless with built-in shelving and wall slats. A sleek media wall in your living room with this integrated design is a good example of this and complete with the cinema glow when you install LED lights into the shelving.

Alternatively, if you’re worried about relying too much on technology at home you can also create ‘switch-off’ zones which is also very trendy right now. Turning a quiet corner into a reading nook or meditation area is one way to unplug from our devices. Set the mood with the right lighting and choose a comfy armchair or meditation mat to get started.

Streamlined homebuying for househunters

Harron Homes has introduced its enhanced Homemover schemes designed to simplify the buying and selling process for househunters searching in Nottinghamshire.

The two schemes, Assisted Move and Part Exchange, provide practical solutions for customers looking to move into a new Harron Home while avoiding the common pitfalls of selling their current property.

Assisted Move offers a tailored plan for homeowners who need to sell their current home before moving into their new one. First, Harron arranges valuations from three independent estate agents to provide a fair market value for the customer's property. Then, they create a personalised marketing strategy sensitive to the customer's needs and schedule. The customer’s property is kept on the market until it has sold, and Harron Homes’ knowledgeable sales experts remain on hand to assist with the sale throughout the entire process. Once the home has been sold, Harron pay the

estate agent fees, and the customer can reserve their brand new Harron Home. The second Homemover scheme is Part Exchange, which is available only on selected properties. This process provides a guaranteed cash buyer for the current home, eliminating property chain delays and streamlining the transition into a new Harron Home.

“We are excited to offer these comprehensive Homemover schemes,” said Natalie Griffiths, Sales and Marketing Director for Harron Homes North Midlands. “Both the Assisted Move and Part Exchange schemes are designed to make the homebuying journey as seamless and stressfree as possible for our customers. One of the most daunting parts of buying a house is the struggle of having to sell your current property while meeting timelines and battling with property chains. With our Homemover schemes, the customer has expert support to ensure they sell their old house and move into their new home at a pace that suits them.”

Three-Storey Investment

Property seekers in Nottinghamshire are being encouraged to find out about the benefits of threestorey homes, both in terms of flexible living and as a long-term investment. As the surge in remote and hybrid working has paved the way for three-storey living, and it’s going to continue to grow in popularity.

Leading housebuilder Barratt and David Wilson Homes have listed their top reasons why three-storey homes are becoming hot property due to versatile designs and buyers’ abilities to grow with their home.

Interior Design Flexibility

With more space to play with, there’s a fantastic opportunity for a home buyer to put their own stamp on a three-storey home. These resourceful properties give residents customisable living spaces and each floor can be designated for specific purposes, whether it be a guest bedroom, hobby room, office space, gym set-up or a playroom for children.

There’s also the benefit of enhanced privacy with separate levels offering flexibility for downtime, making it easier to create distinct areas for adults, children, and guests. Each floor can also feature different design themes, materials, and colours, providing a rich and varied living environment.

Karl Openshaw, Lead Creative at Blocc Interiors, which has partnered with the developers, said: “Threestorey living offers a perfect blend of space and privacy, making it an ideal choice for growing families and professionals who need dedicated areas for work,

relaxation, and entertainment – all under one roof.

Greater Value for Money

One of the biggest benefits of a home designed across three floors is the value for money for the buyer. Flexible living spaces that can be adapted over time mean the purchaser may not have to move again, to upsize or downsize.

Home buyers, who can, are now opting to upsize earlier and make an investment with their first or second house. This means that buyers who might previously have opted for a two-storey, two or three bedroom property are now looking at three-storey, three or four bedroom homes for longevity and increased property value.

Multi-Generational Living

Another draw of three-storey properties is the ability to have multiple generations living under one roof, or at least future-proofing for later years, especially when making use of the top floor and lower living spaces. For properties with a top floor bedroom, they’re well-suited to younger children with parents sleeping on a lower level, whereas a smaller room on the ground floor could be a useful space for an elderly parent.

Upsizing earlier in the property ladder is an investment and is sure to support home buyers through many stages of their lives with an extra floor to work with.

SHARED OWNERSHIP

Leading housebuilder David Wilson Homes is spotlighting its Shared Ownership scheme in partnership with Legal and General Affordable Homes, to help first time buyers onto the property ladder

The Kickstart Shared Ownership scheme is now available on selected properties at David Wilson Homes’ Fernwood Village development in Fernwood near Newark.

Under the scheme, eligible buyers with a maximum household income of £80,000 and who meet the affordability criteria, can purchase up to 75% of a brandnew property and then pay rent on the remaining share.

There are three key benefits to the Kickstart Share Ownership scheme:

• Reduced Deposit - Rather than placing a deposit on a new home based on the full market value, buyers will only put down a deposit on the share they are purchasing, which can make homeownership more affordable for those with smaller deposits.

• Lower Mortgage Repayments – The mortgage will be calculated based

on the share of the property, instead of the entire property price, making homeownership more accessible for those with a lower household income.

• Opportunity for staircasing – After purchasing a portion of a Shared Ownership property, buyers have the opportunity to increase their share later on, in a process known as ‘staircasing’, that allows them to potentially own 100% of the property over time.

Rachael Harrison, Sales Director at David Wilson Homes East Midlands: “We are committed to helping our customers ascend on the property ladder, by offering various schemes and savings to make homeownership more affordable.

“The selection of homes under the Kickstart scheme at Fernwood Village provide a great opportunity for first time buyers looking to take the first step on the property ladder.

“We’d like to encourage anyone

interested in the homes available to visit our Sales Advisers, who will be happy with starting the process of buying a first home.”

The properties under Kickstart Shared Ownership at Fernwood Village are currently a range of three and four bedroom homes with prices starting from £130,000.

Positioned in the picturesque village of Fernwood, the new community offers the best of both worlds, benefitting from a village setting, whilst having plenty of amenities within walking distance.

Its prime location offers green open space, plus great road links into Newark, Nottingham and Lincoln. The nearby Newark Northgate Station connects homeowners to London Kings Cross and London St Pancras.

A Beautiful Resting Place

Bereavement can leave people feeling sad, lost, and sometimes confused, but an appropriate funeral and memorial can bring great comfort and peace. At the Willows Natural Burial Ground, the tranquil surroundings of wildflower meadows, woodland, and ponds can provide great solace for those left behind as they remember the person or people they have lost.

Th e Willows is a 10-acre family-owned natural burial site near South Croxton, with commanding views of the Charnwood countryside, where people can be buried in hand dug graves in eco-friendly coffins or caskets, made of biodegradable materials such as cardboard, willow, wool or banana leaf to name a few. Conversely, their ashes can be buried or sub-surface scattered, either in bio-degradable urns or simply poured into or onto the ground.

A range of commemorative memorials are available, made of natural materials such as Welsh slate, and wood, while many people choose to remember their loved ones by planting a tree or native rose bush.

Owners Chris and Jenny Scroby and their family, have been transforming the bare fields with extensive tree and bulb planting since

opening in 2011, inviting families of the buried or prepurchased plots, to join in at planting weekends. They recently purchased another 3,750 native British bluebell, snowdrop and daffodil bulbs, whilst simultaneously raising money for local charities.

The Willows caters for people of all faiths or no faith. The site can accommodate graveside funerals or act solely as a burial site after a service elsewhere. If families do have a service on site, their fee includes provision of a small pop-up shelter, with limited seating and soft drinks for those attending.

The natural burial option is a cost-effective alternative to a traditional cemetery burial or cremation.

Chris and Jenny work with the family’s chosen funeral directors to ensure everything goes smoothly, whilst respecting the parameters set out to protect and promote the site as a natural, wildlife friendly environment.

Chris says: “We’re very pleased with our progress, which we see as our contribution in giving something back to nature and the environment.”

SAVING LIVES

More than 16,000 lives in the Midlands saved through organ donation over last 30 years but more almost 1400 patients in the region still waiting for a transplant. NHS Blood and Transplant is celebrating the fact that the NHS Organ Donor Register has been helping to save lives for 30 years through the gift of organ donation – with more than 3.8 million people in the Midlands declaring their willingness to donate their organs after death.

Since the creation of the NHS Organ Donor Register in 1994, more than 100,000 people in the UK had their lives saved by an organ transplant, including more than 16,000 people in the Midlands.

Although organ donation has been saving lives in the UK since the 1950’s, the NHS Organ Donor Register was created 30 years ago to promote the wider message of organ donation and allow people to record their decision to be a donor.

In the Midlands, 638 patients received a lifesaving transplant from a deceased donor last year and 195 residents donated their organs after death. Many of those had recorded their decision on the NHS Organ Donor Register. However, the waiting list for a transplant in the UK is higher than ever before, with 1399 patients in the region still actively waiting for a lifesaving organ.

One person who knows what a lasting impacting organ donation and transplant can have is Rich Smith. His life was saved by a liver transplant when he suddenly fell ill at the age of 25 over Christmas 1992. By February 1993 he was in acute liver failure, for unknown reasons, and ended up in a coma, being given just days to live. Two days later he received a liver transplant. Rich, now 57 with two children, and living in his hometown of Bridgnorth, Shropshire, says: “I have lived a full life thanks to my donor. It is not just the immediate lifesaving impact of organ donation, people live long lives because of it.

“I’ve had a long time to reflect, I think about my achievements and all the things I have done living life, even working and paying taxes and also getting married, and divorced, having children, moving house plus all the day to day things you tend to take for granted. I have two wonderful children, Charlie and Grace. I have always been into sport and share this love with them. I was able to return to my career as a chartered surveyor and carry on until I was 50 then I followed Grace around the world with her football. Now after getting a psychology degree, I am studying for my MSc - I’ve discovered studying in later life is one of the best things you can do.

“I love cycling, starting off mountain biking after my transplant then I got into racing road bikes. I went to my first British Transplant Games in Birkenhead in 1997 and over 20 years have attended ten World Transplant Games.

“I’ve been extremely fortunate to have good health and I’ve been lucky with my

job, it’s made life comfortable and then I could stop at 50 and focus on family even more and studying. I’ve had the opportunity to live a full life I wouldn’t have had, 31 years is a long time. Donation and transplant are such positive things and people should give some serious thought to joining the register, they might have the chance to save lives. Donation gives hope, for life and a long and full life.”

Mark Brown a 57-year-old kitchen fitter from Nottingham, also knows how the legacy of organ donation can be lived out by those, like him, who get a second chance at life. Mark received a kidney transplant 30 years ago after being diagnosed with the genetic condition Alport’s Syndrome. He spent his teens and early twenties in and out of hospital and on dialysis before a match was found for him.

Mark said: “I had been on holiday skiing in 1994 with my then girlfriend Jo, (now my wife), and was only back a week when I got the phone call to say a match had been found. I was over the moon and so thankful for the opportunity of a better life. I spent 16 days recovering in hospital and then took a year out to travel the world as a thank you to my donor for allowing me the opportunity. My health greatly improved, and I was blessed to go on to be a father to two wonderful children, Jess and Ben. I take part in the Transplant Games every year and have won medals for curling, darts, archery, golf and indoor bowls. I can’t thank my donor enough for giving me this opportunity.”

Only around 1% of people who die in the UK every year are usually able to donate their organs after death. Donors are typically those who have died in a hospital intensive care unit or emergency department due to brain injuries, cardiac arrest or other trauma. It is vital that everyone who wants to be a donor registers their decision on the NHS Organ Donor Register and talks it through with their families who will be expected to support their decision should the time come.

Families are far more likely to support donation when they already know it was what their relative wanted. Almost 90% of people honoured their family members decision last year when they had either proactively registered their decision to donate on the NHS Organ Donor Register or verbally expressed a decision to be a donor.

Anthony Clarkson, Director of Organ and Tissue Donation and Transplantation, at NHS Blood and Transplant, says: “Every day across the UK there are thousands of patients and their families, waiting for that all important life-saving call. Yet, this

is often only possible as a result of another family receiving some of the hardest news they might ever have to hear.

“The change in the law now means that it’s assumed that when someone dies in circumstances where they could be a donor, that they agree to donate if they haven’t officially opted out. However, noone is automatically added to the Organ Donor Register. You still need to confirm your own decision and your family will still be consulted before donation goes ahead and will be expected to support your decision. With 1399 patients in the Midlands waiting for organ transplants, it’s more important than ever to register your organ donation decision and make it known to your family.”

Also, look out for landmarks across the Midlands turning pink. This year, the UK will once again ‘Go Pink’ for Organ Donation Week. Councils, businesses, charities and famous landmarks up and down the country are turning their lights pink for the week to show their support for the thousands waiting for a transplant.

Local Clinical Psychologist helps children to control their social media.

According to Nottingham City’s Mental Health and Wellbeing Strategy data, more than 5,000 children aged 5 to 16 living in Nottingham are living with mental health problems1. The world we live in today is very different to 10 years agowith the digital landscape continuously evolving, young people are growing up in an unrecognisable society. In this guide, Clinical Psychologist and Director of Purple House Clinic Nottingham, Dr Elizabeth Lee, shares her expert advice on the simple digital hacks and mental health strategies that parents can encourage to help their children create the best online experience.

Pros and cons

When used appropriately, social media has many benefits. It allows instant connections and communications to be formed with friends and family members – preventing loneliness, people can utilise their platforms as a creative outlet where they can express themselves, and it provides instant access to entertainment and information. Social media also has educational value by enabling students, teachers, and parents to get useful information easily, connect with learning groups, and access educational systems. However, social media, if misused, can also have a negative impact on its users. With increased levels of online communication comes online bullying, misinformation, the risk of scams, a potential lack of privacy and social media addiction – all of which can have a negative impact on mental health. By controlling and limiting the way you use social media, you can reap the benefits while avoiding any of these harmful habits.

Privacy

It’s essential in today’s age where everyone has access to each other’s online profiles that you are being conscious of your privacy. By limiting what you post about yourself, you can control how much you are being perceived and therefore how much people – whom you may not know in real life – know about you from your social media. It can also be beneficial to control who you follow and what content you see. You only want to come across posts that bring you joy or that you are interested in, so to avoid accounts that annoy, upset, or make you feel bad in any way, simply unfollow or ‘mute’ them from your feed. What’s posted on social media has the potential to remain on the internet forever, so you should contact others carefully. Being mindful about what you say to others helps to reinforce that positive atmosphere that we are trying to create, but it is also important

to remember that not everybody on the internet is trustworthy.

Don’t compare yourself

Comparison is the thief of joy. People only post things that they want others to see – social media isn’t reality; it’s a highlight reel. Try to use social media as an opportunity to engage and connect rather than as a place where you compare yourself to others. This can be easier said than done, but by practising being aware of your scrolling habits you can begin to identify which posts make you feel good or bad about yourself.

Don’t let statistics determine your self-worth

Sometimes social media can seem like a popularity competition. It is easy to become fixated on the number of likes or followers you have compared to others – but in reality, no one is checking each other’s statistics because they’re too worried about their own! For your own peace of mind, it’s useful to hide like counts on your posts so that you’re not sat watching the numbers. Try not to take social media too seriously – it’s supposed to be fun!

Live in the moment

Everything is digital nowadays, so it’s important to set time limits and take breaks from social media. Living in the moment has proven to increase an individual’s productivity, create better relationships and reduce stress. On the other hand, continuously staring at screens for long periods of time can create feelings of loneliness, anxiety and depression. It’s important to go outside and get fresh air every day, so take a step back from your phone every so often and find a fun activity to do. This could be going for a walk, catching up with your friends, going to the gym etc. Physical health and mental health are closely linked, and by getting just a few minutes of natural light everyday you can promote better sleep and a boosted immune system from the vitamin D in sunlight.

It's also crucial to understand the different ways in which adults and children are hardwired to respond to the impact of social media access. In adults, the brain is equipped with a strong braking system (called executive functioning), which helps us to stop ourselves from acting inappropriately when we’re angry, among other impulsive behaviours. In teens, however, the prefrontal cortex – where executive functioning takes place – isn’t fully developed. So, it’s harder for teens to regulate their emotions – both on and offline.

Teenagers crave approval from

their peers and social media challenges this. Teens often feel pressure to keep up with the latest online trends, in anticipation of a social reward – taking breaks can help people recognise that this isn’t necessary.

Switch off

Mentally and physically switching off from your phone is key for proper relaxation. The blue light from our phones and other devices can negatively impact our quality of sleep, but getting a good night's rest is important for regulating your mood. Try to log off from social media and shut down your screens about an hour before bedtime to allow time for your mind to rest.

Utilise online and in-person mental health tools

There are so many online resources available for people with mental health difficulties, and using these can help to track your mood, seek support or practise relaxation. If you or someone you know is struggling, reaching out to a professional is the best thing you can do.

Dr Lee concludes, “Having worked for over 20 years supporting people with mental health difficulties, I am proud to be able to utilise my skills, alongside my team, to help others. With the world so quickly evolving, it can be daunting for anyone, but support is always available.

“At Purple House Clinic, we offer services for both adults and children, helping a range of mental health difficulties including depression, anxiety, phobias, PTSD and complex trauma through a variety of therapies and assessments.”
