This year, the community led festival is expanding out from the main OId Market Square hub to take over more green spaces in the city with activities at Sussex Street, Central Library and the award winning Green Heart, the natural wildlife space on site of old Broadmarsh shopping centre.
In Old Market Square, a brand new geodome will host the ‘Grow Yourself’ hub where Experian and E.ON Next will lead the way with hands-on activities including science, numeracy skills, and wellbeing activities. There’s also a chance to be heard at the Listen Inn, or get involved with local volunteer groups at the Action Cafe.
A long dining table will form the centrepiece in the square for everyone to gather round to enjoy food and conversation, along with creative installations, circus, puppets, crafty activities, a huge live art billboard and a lot of green things to see, do and learn. On the square’s fountain, a pop-up forest school and a community garden bring a splash of green to the city centre.
Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust, Woodland Trust, Sherwood Forest Trust, Grow Notts, Green Guardians, Clean Champions and more will be taking up residence, along with artists, musicians and creatives to create a fun day with loads to see and do.
On the food front, there will be payas-you-feel food at the Community Kitchen; a new Pulp Friction refreshments stall, along with local street food, fresh
The festival’s main second site is at Sussex Street, near Nottingham College, where there will be city gardening, community performances and activities running all day from The Pythian Club and Switch Up. Skate Nottingham will be offering skate lessons including a girls only session to kick things off and skate-ramp building. It’s also a great place to view the Slow Fashion Catwalk, where amazing upcycled outfits will be modelled.
Central Library is the heart of the literary action, the place to try some poetry, practice your writing, and imagine a new world into life, along with the ‘Library of No Returns’ handing out free books.
On the way, there's a chance to explore the urban oasis of the Green Heart and check out the live murals led by ArtFest
popping up all over the place, and the ‘bee highway’ and street art displays of Bridlesmith Gate.
The OakMobile, a theatre experience housed in a giant silver acorn, will transport visitors to a woodland glade where a storyteller and a robin enlist help to reconnect the threads binding humans and nature. Participants will be encouraged to explore the city's green spaces as a result!
Further afield, the GOBS artist gathering is a full-day creative programme of workshops and performance at New Art Exchange in Hyson Green, and an exhibition at Backlit shows interior design students exploring sustainable materials.

While Green Hustle festival is a one day event, the work carries on all year-round, supported by hundreds of volunteers over the last six years. It’s behind the planting of 10,000 local trees, including the 1,000 tree Hustle Holt Miyawaki forest at Woodthorpe Park, and 4,000 trees at the ‘Aspley People’s Forest’ on King George V Park, as well commissioning permanent public art like the Heron at their ‘Wilford Street Wildlife Ramp’ site.
There are loads of opportunities to get involved ahead of the festival from craft sessions with the festival’s decor team to Slow Fashion catwalk clothing upcycling sessions. Leisure Solutions Community Trust is proud to announce a partnership with Barrio Padel and Nottinghamshire County Council, which will see the introduction of four premium covered Padel Tennis courts at Holme Pierrepont Country Park, the home of the National Water Sports Centre.

With planning permission for the courts recently granted and building work already begun, the Barrio Padel team fully expect to have people playing the sport at Holme Pierrepont Country Park by June this year.
The new courts will be operated by Barrio Padel, which was formed in April 2025 by Matt Bennett & Matt Shenton, who are co-directors of the company. Matt Bennett said: “We’ve been looking for the perfect home to create more Padel court capacity in Nottingham for this amazing, fastgrowing sport. Working with Leisure Solutions Community Trust and Nottinghamshire County Council, we’ve have found the perfect partners to help us create a Padel Club at this iconic Nottinghamshire location.
“Our core values are underpinned by two key elements - providing a premium level service in an accessible environment. This is an exciting, easy to learn and fun sport, which is open to people of all ages, all demographics and abilities.
“The courts will be covered, and feature all the services a player expects, including toilets, changing rooms, showers, a social space, a café/bar and plenty of free parking.
“In Spanish, ‘Barrio’ translates as ‘neighbourhood’, and it’s that kind of community, inclusive environment we’ll be trying to build at the venue.

Part in Powerful Black History Month Tour
2Funky Arts is launching an exciting paid opportunity for artists of Black, African and Caribbean heritage to be part of their acclaimed, annual And Still I Rise Midlands tour - a production for Black History Month. Ten outstanding creatives will be selected to present powerful new work - celebrating the strength, spirit and vibrancy of Black culture.
Each artist will develop an original 6–7-minute performance, exploring themes of identity, heritage and liberation. Inspired by Maya Angelou’s iconic poem Still I Rise, Black history and/ or personal experience, the programme offers a platform for bold voices to be seen and heard.
The tour will travel across four cities in the Midlands:
• Fri 2nd October - Birmingham MAC
• Fri 16th October - Derby Theatre
• Friday 23rd October - Leicester, The Y Theatre
• Thursday 29th October - Nottingham Arts Theatre
All performance styles are welcome –including poetry, music, dance, and theatre. Selected artists will receive £500 to develop and rehearse their work, plus £200 for each performance. Applicants

Pensions in Divorce: Why They’re Often
the Largest Asset (and Most Overlooked)
When couples divorce, attention often focuses on the family home. It feels like the most important asset—the one with bricks, mortar, and obvious value. But in many marriages, particularly longer ones, the pension can far outweigh the value of the home. Despite this, pensions remain one of the most misunderstood, overlooked, and incorrectly divided assets in divorce proceedings.
If you are separating, understanding how pensions fit into your financial settlement is critical. Ignoring them, or dealing with them incorrectly, can result in significant long-term financial harm—especially at retirement, when it’s often too late to fix mistakes.
Why pensions are often the largest asset
Over a long working life, pension contributions can quietly accumulate into a very valuable asset. In many cases, the total pension value exceeds the equity in the family home.
This is particularly common where:
• One spouse has a defined benefit (final salary) pension.
• The marriage is long, and one partner reduced or gave up work to care for children.
• One spouse worked in a high-earning or public sector role with generous pension benefits.
• There are multiple pensions built up across different employments.
It is not unusual for pensions to be worth hundreds of thousands of pounds— sometimes substantially more than the family home.
Pensions are often underestimated because people rely on transfer values shown on statements. These figures can be misleading, particularly for defined benefit schemes that provide guaranteed, inflationlinked income for life. The true value lies in the income the pension will generate, not just the headline number.
Why pensions are so commonly overlooked
There are several reasons pensions fail to receive proper attention during divorce:
• They are complex and confusing. Pension jargon and technical detail can be offputting, leading parties to focus on assets they better understand.
• They feel distant. Retirement may appear decades away, making pensions seem less urgent than housing or immediate living costs.
• They are easy to undervalue. Two pensions with identical transfer values can deliver very different retirement incomes.
• Emotional resistance. Pensions often feel personal, built through years of work. This can make sharing them emotionally difficult, leading to pressure to trade pensions for property or cash instead.
Unfortunately, this often leaves the spouse with weaker pension provision—commonly the lower earner—significantly worse off in the long term.
How pensions can be divided on divorce
Pensions are not simply split equally. The law provides several mechanisms for dealing with them, and the best option depends on individual circumstances.
• Pension Sharing Orders
This is the most common and effective method. A percentage of one spouse’s pension is transferred into a new, separate pension in the other spouse’s name. Each party then has independent pension provision, promoting fairness and long-term security.
• Pension Offsetting
Here, one spouse retains their pension while the other receives a larger share of non-pension assets, often the family home. While attractive in principle, it is risky. Comparing pension income with property value is complex, and without expert advice, offsetting can result in serious imbalance.
• Pension Attachment Orders
Now used far less frequently, this arrangement entitles one spouse to a share of the other’s pension income when it is paid. The major drawback is dependency: the recipient relies on their ex-partner’s retirement decisions, creating ongoing financial uncertainty.
Why professional valuation matters
Pensions vary significantly in structure and benefit. For example:
• Public sector defined benefit schemes offer secure, lifelong income.
• Defined contribution pensions depend on investment performance.
• Some schemes include inflation protection or lump sum benefits, others do not.
Because of this complexity, expert actuarial advice is often essential—particularly where pensions are valuable, defined benefit schemes are involved, or there is a large imbalance between spouses’ pension
provision. A specialist report enables fair comparison and informed decision-making.
The
risks of ignoring
pensions
Failing to address pensions properly can result in:
• Long-term financial insecurity
• Unequal retirement outcomes
• Retirement poverty for the weaker pension holder
• No opportunity to correct mistakes once a final order is made
Even where other assets are divided fairly, ignoring pensions can undermine financial fairness in later life.
Protecting yourself
If you are divorcing or separating:
• Ensure full pension disclosure from both parties.
• Obtain specialist legal advice.
• Consider actuarial input where pensions are complex.
• Be cautious about pension offsetting.
• Finalise any agreement in a courtapproved Consent Order.
Final thoughts
Pensions may be overlooked, but they often underpin long-term financial security. Addressed properly, they can be divided fairly and sensibly—helping both parties move forward with confidence toward retirement.

Ingredients:
1 sourdough pizza dough (about 250–300g)
• 4 tbsp caramelised onions

• A handful of rocket

1. Preheat oven to 230°C (or as hot
as it gets). If using a pizza stone, place it in the oven to heat as well.
2. Roll out the sourdough pizza dough on a floured surface to your desired thickness.
3. Transfer to a baking sheet or pizza peel. Spread with caramelised onions and drizzle with olive oil.
4. Bake for 8–12 minutes, or until the crust is golden and crisp.
5. Remove from the oven and top with prosciutto slices, crumbled feta, and chopped pecans. Scatter over rocket and drizzle generously with

Hot Honey Halloumi Salad with Mango,
Corn & Cucumber
And for the vegetarian Organic Hot Honey tastes just as good drizzled over cheese and veg as it does over meat. This delicious salad proves the point.
Ingredients:
• 1 block of halloumi cheese
• 6 baby cucumbers, thinly sliced
• 1 ripe mango, cubed
• A handful of fresh coriander and mint, chopped
• 2 ears of corn on the cob
• Honey Heaven Organic Hot Honey (to taste)
• Juice of 1 lemon
• Salt, to taste
Method:
1. Slice the halloumi and grill it in a hot pan until golden on both sides. Drizzle with Honey Heaven Hot Honey while still warm. Set aside.
2. Remove the corn kernels from the cobs and grill them in the same pan until slightly charred.
3. Prepare the salad ingredients: cube the mango, slice the cucumbers, and finely chop the coriander and mint.
4. In a large bowl, combine the grilled corn, mango, cucumbers, and herbs.
5. Squeeze in the lemon juice, season with salt, and add a little extra Hot Honey to taste.
6. Gently toss everything together, then top with the grilled halloumi. Serve immediately.
Hot Honey Wings
The smoky paprika of the chicken wings blends mouth-wateringly with the Hot Honey and vinegar sticky sauce. Truly finger licking good!
Ingredients:
• 1tsp smoked paprika
• 1tsp garlic granules
• 2tbsp baking powder
• 1tbsp cornflour
• 1tsp sea salt flakes
• Black pepper, to taste
• 16 chicken wings (about 1.5 kg)
• 4tbsp Honey Heaven Organic Hot Honey
• 1tbsp cider vinegar
• 2tsp sesame seeds (optional)
Method:
1. Toss wings with smoked paprika, garlic granules, baking powder, cornflour, salt, and pepper. Chill for at least 2 hours.
2. Heat oven to 230°C (210°C fan). Place wings on a lined tray, fleshy side down. Roast 20 mins, flip, then roast 25–30 mins more until crisp.
3. Mix Honey Heaven Hot Honey and vinegar. Brush over wings, sprinkle sesame seeds (optional), and return to oven for 8–10 mins until sticky.
4. Serve hot and enjoy the sweet heat!

ViDa by Lorentes is an independent Spanish restaurant that bring to Nottingham the authenticity of Spanish tapas. Situated in an underground hideaway in the heart of the Lace Market in Nottingham
I have been meaning to come back to Vida by Lorentes for years, it seemed the perfect opportunity when our babysitter graduated to doing the toddlers bedtime and we had a gig at the arena. We book a table for 18:00 and headed straight there from the crazy bath and bedtime routine of our life.
The outside was exactly as I remembered it but at this point realised it had probably been more like 4 years since I had been. The restaurant is in a basement of a very old building and the entrance could use a bit of love. The shabbiness doesn’t fill you with confidence as you descend the stairs. When we got to the dining room though we were pleasantly surprised to see the place packed. At 18:00. On a Tuesday. Vida by Lorentes obviously makes the most of it’s proximity to the Arena but there was a lovely relaxed feeling of a neighbourhood tapas restaurant and none of the rush you expect from an early sitting.
After being given menus and talked through the specials we were given time to choose. That window stretched into over 15 minutes (where tables that had been seated later than us had subsequently ordered and started getting food). This was the first time we had to get the attention of the staff and the rest of the night continued in that way. I think there were 3 people front of house that night so they were busy, but our server passed us so many times I began to think we were being ignored by the end of the meal. Perhaps it was that relaxed, unrushed feeling I liked when I walked in biting me back.
We ordered 4 tapas off the main menu and 2 specials. I had a craving for ham and cheese and so ordered the iberico and manchego. The board was generous with cheese and ham (at £25 it should be) but the bread sticks left us ordering a side of ciabatta and tomato. I am a massive ham snob as well and was a little disappointed with the thickness and cutting. I have been ruined by eating the Jamon Iberico at Rinconcello
in Seville, nothing compares since. The Northerner made the good point I should just order the standard ham in the UK and limit my expectations – a good point, well made.
The 2 specials were the salmon fishcake and the iberico pork croquettes, the fishcakes were full of salmon and lightly seasoned but I would have preferred a sauce on the side as it had been put on with a heavy hand and overpowered the quite subtle flavours in the fishcake. The croquettes were a mouthful of bechamel with little of the iberico ham, I had at least 2 bits in mine but The Northerner didn’t think he had any which was disappointing.
From the main menu we went for chicken in a cream sauce with chorizo, albondigas, asparagus and broccoli with romesco sauce and a free side of patatas brava. I will always order meatballs if
I like eating out, trying new restaurants and being on the receiving end of great hospitality. I am a mum with 2 children (one baby, one 9 year old) so I include how the places I visit work for families. I have worked in bars, cafes, restaurants and pubs for most of my life. Good places should be supported, celebrated and shared.
NOTTINGHAM FOOD CRITIC
they are on a menu and these were a really nice size (not meat meteorites) if a little hard, the sauce was the right level of salty tomatoes and the dish came with the hidden surprise of tinned mushrooms which I have had in Spain before but makes it a none sharer with The Northerner. This worked well as the creamy chicken and chorizo wasn’t for me – it was cloyingly rich with the cream and I couldn’t tell the difference between the lumps of chicken and chorizo. He really enjoyed it though so the scales balanced well.
The ‘sides’ were the highlight of the meal, with the deep smoky romesco bringing the vegetables and chick peas to a happier place (one was under done and the other over) of harmony. Patatas bravas is normally a dish I can take or leave but at Vida by Lorentes it was standout, the potatoes aren’t too oily and retain a sweetness. They’re crisp without being chip like and the mayo and tomato balance really well, I didn’t even mind that most of the potatoes had lost a bit of crisp because of it. It was my favourite dish of the night. Having waited a bit too long for our dishes to be taken away I used the clear down as the opportunity to order dessert, we always share churros and I had seen them on the menu earlier. They came quickly but were again a
disappointment. There were 3 churros between us, it felt a little mean and when we mentioned it to the server he said they were made ‘on site’. I am not sure why that impacts the portion size, but it does explain how they managed to burn the chocolate in the microwave though.
Vida by Lorentes is a relaxed restaurant I can imagine spending hours in (before I had kids) drinking glass after glass of rioja and keeping topped up on small plates but the price and service represent the low score. The meal was nearly £120 without a tip; which should get you a bit more, delivered a bit better.

MAY HALF TERM ADVENTURES WITH THE NATIONAL TRUST
Families looking for memorable days out this May half term will find plenty to enjoy at National Trust places throughout Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire.
Across the region, sites are gearing up for a lively week of family-friendly entertainment. Young adventurers can get stuck into hands - on outdoor experiences, enjoy seasonal trails, try creative activities, and explore the countryside in new and exciting ways.
GUNBY ESTATE, HALL AND GARDENS, LINCOLNSHIRE, PE23 5SS
On 25 May, there will be special admission prices as part of our partnership with the Lincolnshire Wolds Outdoor Festival. On this day, entry to the House and Gardens will be £7 per adult instead of £12, and Adult Garden Only tickets will be £3.50.
LINCOLNSHIRE WOLDS OUTDOOR FESTIVAL
As part of the Lincolnshire Wolds Outdoor Festival, a selection of guided and social walks will take place during half term, giving visitors the opportunity to explore the surrounding landscape. An Archaeology Walk to Bratoft Manor will be held on 23 May, alongside Social Walks to Bratoft Manor on 23 and 30 May. Guided Walks to Bratoft Manor will run on 24, 25 and 31 May, while a Social Walk to Ice House Pond will take place on 26 May, offering a variety of walking experiences throughout the week.
Art and nature lovers can visit the Orchard Gallery throughout the entire half term, where Lincolnshire Vision of Nature, an exhibition by Doug Fossey in partnership with the National Trust, will be on display. The exhibition celebrates the natural beauty of Lincolnshire and offers a thoughtful, creative way to engage with the landscape.
Families are invited to take part in the ‘Nature Quest’ Half Term Trail, running from 23 to 31 May. This interactive trail encourages children to explore the outdoors, discover wildlife, and complete fun nature themed challenges around the property. Also taking place from 23 to 31 May is Rose Week, with a floral
display located in the Coach House. This celebration of roses highlights their beauty, history, and significance within the gardens and is a must-see for gardening enthusiasts.
The half term programme is rounded off with Steampunk, Regency and Roses, running from 24 to 25 May. This unique event blends historical fashion, imaginative steampunk style, and floral displays, creating a colourful and atmospheric experience for visitors of all ages.

From Saturday 2 May to Sunday 31 May, families can enjoy The Newt Code Trail, a fun, self-guided activity running throughout the month. Children can follow clues around the site to crack the code, learning more about nature and wildlife along the way. The trail is designed to encourage exploration and curiosity, making it an engaging activity for younger visitors during May visits.
On Wednesday 27 May, visitors can take part in a Centenary Printing Workshop with Joanna Pass. This hands-on workshop celebrates printing and design, offering participants the opportunity to learn traditional printmaking techniques while creating their own centenary inspired prints. Led by artist Joanna Pass, the workshop provides a creative and immersive experience linked to the site’s history.

From 23 May, Pokémon fans new and old can get active outdoors on Belton’s Pokémon Trading Card Game Mega Evolution Trail. Families can team up to search the gardens for each Mega Evolution Pokémon, discover their powers, and complete challenges.
Trail sheets will be available to collect on the day from the Info Hub and will be free with admission or membership.

Half term will also see fun family crafts take place on Thursday 28 and Saturday 30 May, making colourful ladybirds and creations inspired by the season. Plus, the National Trust’s largest outdoor adventure playground will be open as usual alongside The Ride indoor adventure play for weatherproof family fun.
Families will be able to engage with the legacy of Isaac Newton in fresh and exciting ways this half term with brand new play activities in the courtyard. The interactive equipment, which arrives this month, includes a sand pendulum, water wall and Newton’s cradle. Plus, as always, the Science Centre will be offering the chance to have a go at some of Newton’s experiments and learn about his discoveries with games and handson fun.

From wild adventures in the woodland to family bike rides around the estate, Clumber Park offers the perfect setting for time together outdoors this May half term. For those seeking something a little more adventurous, The Great Big Tree Climb takes place on Saturday 30 and Sunday 31 May. Using ropes and harnesses, visitors can climb into the canopy of one of Clumber’s majestic trees and enjoy a unique view from above. £27.50 per person.

Try your hand at a Victorian circular knitting machine, learn about the history of framework knitting and its links to The Workhouse, and discover how this important local industry shaped lives across the county. July, Buxton International Festival brings the glamour of opera, music, jazz and literature to the beautiful spa town of Buxton for an unforgettable fortnight.
The Buxton International Festival (BIF) first captivated audiences back in 1979 and nearly fifty years later, is known across the world for offering audiences often once-in-a-lifetime opportunities to hear rarely performed operas, and more recently, newly commissioned works.

As part of the Books festival, literary lovers will hear from renowned authors, including art historian and broadcaster Andrew GrahamDixon, as well as former President of the Supreme Court, Lady Hale. BIF’s new Jazz Director, Wesley Stephenson curates the 2026 BIF jazz programme. Oddsocks returns with their new modern take on the well-loved classic, Romeo and Juliet, finding laughs and pathos in The Bard’s most dramatic of tragedies. Will Romeo pull himself together to escape with Juliet as a family feud divides the community and violence stalks the streets? Will the “star-crossed lovers” see beyond the hate and dare to follow their hearts? And will the

All will be revealed in Titchfield Park on Sunday 14 June. The audience is invited to bring a blanket or a chair and settle back for outdoor theatre amid one of Mansfield’s best loved open spaces in all its mid-summer glory.
Cllr Stuart Richardson, Mansfield District Council’s Portfolio Holder for Regeneration and Growth, said: “Oddsocks always manages to bring a modern bearing to Shakespeare. The play may be over 500 years old, but its themes are as relevant and as universal today as they were in the 1500s. It remains one of Shakespeare’s
best loved and most accessible tragedies and it is no coincidence that it has remained on the GCSE set texts list for decades. Taking drama out of the theatre and into the open air in the summer is something we love to promote and we hope it brings families out together to enjoy culture in a special way. The show will go on regardless of what the weather may bring.”

The first acts have now been announced, promising an evening packed with razor-sharp wit, big laughs, and top-tier comedy.

A former finalist in the BBC New Comedy Award and winner of Harrogate Comedian of the Year, Brush has performed extensively across the UK and internationally. His writing credits include popular BBC Radio
4 programmes such as The News Quiz, The Show What You Wrote, and Newsjack. He has also toured as support for major names including Alexei Sayle, Jason Manford, Fern Brady, Arthur Smith, Paul Sinha and Jonathan Pie. Joining him is the acclaimed Garrett Millerick, a stand-up comedian, writer and director. He recently appeared on the hit US late-night show Conan and co-hosts the popular podcast Laughable alongside Jayde Adams and Red Richardson, which was highlighted by The Guardian as one of the funniest podcasts to enjoy during the pandemic.
Millerick’s breakout show Sunflower became one of the most talked-about performances at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2018, later transferring to Soho Theatre where it played to packed audiences. The show earned critical acclaim, including being named Time Out London’s number one Comedy Pick in February 2019, and led
to a Breakthrough Act nomination at the 2019 Chortle Awards. His follow-up show Smile proved even more successful, selling out its runs and adding extra dates due to demand. Praised by The Times as one of the standout shows of 2019, it went on to tour the UK following a London run of events.
Garrett is currently developing a new sitcom project, following a pilot recorded for Audible and produced by Hat Trick Productions, starring Jack Dee and Meera Syal. Nottingham Puppet Festival
The Nottingham Puppet Festival is set to return for its fourth edition from Saturday 27 June to Sunday 5 July 2026. This city-wide event, an Arts Council England funded partnership between the Theatre Royal & Royal Concert Hall and City Arts, will transform libraries, community centres, cinemas and theatres into magical spaces filled with puppets of all shapes and sizes.
A key highlight of the festival is the City Centre Day on Saturday 27 June.
The heart of Nottingham will be transformed into a vibrant stage for puppetry from 10.30am to 4.30pm. Produced by the Puppet Festival Director and City Arts, and supported by It’s In Nottingham, the event features a trail of free performances and walkabouts stretching from Nottingham Central Library and Listergate, through Albert Street, and up to Old Market Square.

A programme of talks, workshops and screenings offers exclusive industry insights, including a screening of Fantastic Mr Fox at Broadway Cinema preceded by a Q&A with Stop Motion Animator Richard Pickersgill who worked on this and other films, a masterclass in film puppetry with Lucasfilm's Martin Rezard at Nottingham Trent University’s Waverley Studio, and a deep dive into puppetry and climate activism with The Walk Productions, creators of The Herds, at Broadway Cinema.

At the heart of space is the outdoor cinema, set to show everything from major live sporting events – including the World Cup, Grand Prix, Wimbledon and the Commonwealth Gamesfamily-favourite films and classic singalongs. The season begins with one of Shakespeare’s most joyful comedies, Twelfth Night. When a shipwreck separates twins Viola and Sebastian, mistaken identity, romance and glorious mischief follow. Disguised as a man, Viola finds herself tangled in a hilarious web of love, music and mayhem. Performed in stunning Elizabethan costume and bursting with playful modern touches, this vibrant production promises laughter, spectacle and a magical evening of theatre.
Next, set sail for a swashbuckling adventure with Treasure Island. In this dark and dangerous tale of pirates, murder and deception, young Jim Hawkins must fight to survive on a perilous search for treasure. With the infamous Long John Silver, his larger-than-life parrot Captain Flint and even a full-size pirate ship, expect sword fights, villains and high-seas thrills. Suitable for ages 10+ a deadly tale for anyone brave enough to set sail on the Hispaniola for an adventure of a lifetime.
After surviving the ocean adventures, we fast-forward to Brighton Beach in 1963 just in time for Fish and Chips and the riotous comedy One Man, Two Guvnors. Meet Francis Henshall, a man so hungry for work (and food) that he secretly takes on two employers at once. Unfortunately, one has accidentally killed the brother of the other—and both are searching for each other. Can Francis keep them apart long enough to keep his job and win Dolly’s heart? Will he ever get to eat any dinner? A Rollicking farce, packed with hilarity, havoc and dizygotic twins, join us for an evening of joyful japes and slapstick silliness!
Now firmly back on land, we find ourselves in a farmland where all animals are equal, but some are more equal than others. Tolethorpe Youth Drama (TYD) present the classic tale of rebellion and treachery Animal Farm by George Orwell adapted by Tatty Hennessy. The allure of privilege and the corrupting nature of power is explored in this timely and riveting story beautifully portrayed by the exceptionally talented young people of Tolethorpe.

Celebrating our 25th event – the Wonderland Classic & Sports Car Festival is moving to an exciting new venue for 2026 on the edge of Sherwood Forest and Sherwood PinesThe Powerhouse & Headstocks.
Classic & Sports cars from across the decades; American cars; Customs & Rods; Clubs, traders and food stalls will all come together for one ‘Petrol Head Heaven’ event at our new venue. The Powerhouse & Headstocks offer visitors a fascinating experience* of mining, military, Raleigh cycles and local history dating back to 1885 and still retains the world’s tallest headstocks when first built at 200ft high. To celebrate our 25th event we are planning a timeline of special cars from each year to greet visitors upon arrival.

There’s a new visitor to the Heights this year too, The Wombles! Take a walk down memory lane in the walkthrough Womble Mania exhibition, telling the story of The Wombles from their creation in the 1960s to their modern day antics on Youtube. Orinoco and Great Uncle Bulgaria roam the estate at weekends during the school holidays, a great opportunity to meet your childhood heroes!
For lunch there’s a fabulous caf? and a spectacular restaurant with outstanding views to accompany each meal. The caf? serves a children’s packed lunch along with pasties, paninis, cakes and bakes, and the restaurant offers a children’s menu, complete with delicious desserts.

Revel in daring displays by the Worcestershire Cavalry and the world-famous Red Devils parachute team, and marvel at the meticulously choreographed Spitfire air display before settling in for an unforgettable concert experience, including 200 live cannon providing a thunderous percussion during Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture and Beethoven’s Battle Symphony.

Midlands Air Festival 2026
The news that many have been waiting for has just been released and it confirms that the RAF Aerobatic Team, The Red Arrows will be taking centre stage at the acclaimed Midlands Air Festival at the end of May.
2026 will be a historic year for the team, as for the first time in its long history, the RAF’s premier display team will have a female commanding officer. Wing Commander Sasha Nash recently replaced Wing Commander Adam Collins who has just completed a successful three year tour with the team. Wing Commander Nash is now responsible for the 150 strong unit based at RAF Waddington and will coordinate every aspect of the team, including displays, safety, engineering and detailed planning. Their appearance at the Midlands Air Festival will be the very first opportunity to see the team’s new season display at an inland UK air display.
The Red Arrows, who are the largest military aerobatic team in the UK, will join a stellar lineup of display
aircraft from all over the UK and Europe, to include the rare cold war MiG 17F jet fighter from Poland, the Grumman Turbo Firecat from France performing its very first fire bombing demonstration in the UK dropping over 3,000 litres of water in 4 seconds and Team Raven who are largest civilian display team in the UK.
The Battle of Britain Memorial flight will be displaying with a Spitfire and Hurricane and unusually, a Douglas DC 3 Dakota as the Lancaster is in deep maintenance at the moment. There will also be the first display after a long restoration of the world’s only Westland Whirlwind historic search and rescue helicopter in company with a giant Sea King helicopter.
The RAF mass parachute team, the Falcons will also drop on all 3 days. Many more exciting aircraft make up the daily flying display.
Adding to the excitement is a major hot air balloon festival too, with over 150 giant multi coloured balloons including many special shape ‘character’ balloons, most standing over 100ft tall including Smiley Scarecrow; Fly Alien; Busby the Kings Guardsman; Orient Express and Iggy the Friendly Dragon.
The Festival kicks off on the evening of Friday 29th May with the signature ‘Nightfire’ show, with pyrotechnic air displays, balloon ascents, Fireglow and a massive firework finale.

Enjoy a great value day out discovering all that the Rutland Show has to offer, and the great news is that nearly everything is free to enjoy when you’re at the show.
Free attractions include entertainment in The Main Ring, which this year is hosting the highly skilled Atkinson Action Horse Team. They promise to thrill and astonish with their high energy stunts and tricks along with fast and furious British Scurry and Trials Driving. Meanwhile, over in the Rutland Ring we welcome back the BMX stunt team defying gravity to perform their extraordinary display as well as the team from Meadow View showcasing dog training and skills.
Admire the livestock and equine showing classes, as well having the chance to meet more farm animals in the Show Farmyard. The ever-popular Sheep Show is back with their hilarious ovine antics, and you can watch farriers and rural crafters demonstrate their traditional skills in the Vintage Field.
In our Active Zone you’ll find loads of free sporting activities for all the family, including a climbing wall, Go-Karts, cycling and Rumble Live. Local sports clubs will be on hand to show you what they do best and encourage you can have a go at lots of different activities such as taking part in dance performance workshops. There’s a full timetable of live music in the Bar from
the show once again.
Other displays throughout the show include vintage tractors, floral arrangements in the horticultural tent, and scent dog demonstrations. Cheer on Leicestershire’s Young Farmers who will be holding Junior Tug-of-War and Stock Fencing Competitions in the Vintage Field Ring, with winning teams qualifying for the National YFC Finals. There’s so much for all the family to enjoy and wellbehaved dogs too. They don’t even need a ticket to attend, so bring them along too.
Of course, you are welcome to spend some cash in the shopping area where you can browse hundreds of stalls including local crafts – woodwork, jewellery, ceramics – and sample locally produced foods, such as meats, cheeses, pies and jams in the Local Farmers’ Market. If you don’t want to bring your own picnic, there are several bars and a wide range of food from local producers, world cuisine and street food available.

Rutland is officially launching the start of the 2026 tourism season with the unveiling of new visitor information signage funded by UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, the release of updated visitor guides and a call to support the county’s hospitality sector.
New, high-quality information signs have been installed in Oakham and Uppingham, designed to welcome visitors and help them discover each town’s rich heritage with beautifully illustrated town maps. A Good Night's Sleep
A host of experts have joined forces with Hästens Wilmslow to share insight into every aspect of sleep optimisation.
From environment to routine and mindful habits here are some of the highlights that can help to dramatically improve sleep quality - alongside the importance of choosing the right mattress. Here are just some of the highlights from the event.

Designing a Sleep-Supportive Environment
Interior designer Fed Whitefoot from Studio Diora emphasised the importance of natural materials when it comes to sleep.“When you consider that we spend around eight hours a night in bed, the materials we surround ourselves with really matter,” she explained. “Natural fabrics such as cotton, wool and other nonsynthetic fibres allow the skin to breathe and help avoid unnecessary chemical exposure. Everything from sheets and duvet covers to pillows should be as natural as possible.”
She also highlighted the importance of removing distractions and regulating temperature. “A bedroom should be free from stimulation - your body needs to be able to fully switch off. And temperature is key; not too hot, not too cold, but comfortable enough to allow deep rest.”
Relaxing the Body to Calm the Mind
From a physical wellbeing perspective, Gavin Hawthorn from The Massage Company, Altrincham, spoke about the proven benefits of regular massage for improved sleep. “We now have data showing that regular massage promotes better and more consistent sleep,” he said. “Reduced muscle tension, improved blood flow and overall
relaxation all help prepare the body for rest.”For those looking to recreate the effects at home, he recommends a warm bath with Epsom salts. “It’s hard to beat. While it’s not the same as massage, it does help muscles relax and supports detoxification.”
Clearing the Mind Before Bed
Yoga teacher Celine Walters of Yoga Social Club, Alderley Edge and Wilmslow, shared simple techniques to quieten a busy mind. “One of the most powerful tools is a pen and paper,” she said. “A daily ‘brain dump’ - writing down everything that’s occupying your thoughts - allows you to mentally offload. Once it’s on paper, you don’t need to carry it through the night.”
She also recommended gentle yin yoga and restorative poses, including legs up the wall. “It helps lower blood pressure, slow the heart rate and encourages drainage. It’s incredibly calming and can even be done in bed.”
Breath, Comfort and Self-Soothing
Fellow Yoga Social Club teacher Sophie Spark highlighted the benefits of warming rituals and calming breathwork. “Golden milk made with warm milk with turmeric, black pepper and cinnamon is a beautiful way to prepare the body for sleep,” she explained. “Pair that with breathing where the exhale is slightly longer than the inhale to activate the parasympathetic nervous system, the body’s ‘rest and digest’ state.”
She also encouraged self-soothing touch. “Simple movements like crossing your arms and giving yourself a gentle hug can release tension and help quieten the nervous system.”
Supporting the Body Overnight
Osteopath Martin Machata from the Fern Clinic in Hale focused on posture and spinal support. “For those with back pain, a spare pillow can make all the difference, under the
knees if you sleep on your back, or between the knees if you’re on your side. It helps align the hips, relaxes the back muscles and makes it much easier to find a restful position.”

Adding to the expert advice, Jake Lewin, Store Manager at Hästens Wilmslow, shared his own sleep recommendations.“Beyond investing in the right bed or mattress, it’s about creating the cleanest sleep environment possible,” he said. “Leaving your phone outside the bedroom is one of the biggest improvements you can make. What is bullying?
This is the Anti-Bullying Alliance’s definition of bullying: “The repetitive, intentional hurting of one person or group by another person or group, where the relationship involves an imbalance of power.”
People are often bullied because of a difference. That could be their race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, an aspect of their appearance, or something else. Bullying can be:
• Physical – for example pushing, kicking, hitting, biting, pinching
• Verbal – for example teasing, belittling, spreading rumours, threats, sarcasm
• Emotional – for example ridicule, humiliation, threatening gestures, intimidating, excluding and isolating others, manipulation and coercion
• Sexual – for example unwanted physical contact, inappropriate touching, abusive comments, homophobic abuse, exposure to inappropriate films
• Online/cyber – for example posting on social media, sharing photos, sending nasty messages, social exclusion.
Disagreements and falling out are a normal part of relationships, whether that’s in someone’s relationships with their friends and family, at work, with neighbours or with people who are paid to help take care of them. It can be difficult and upsetting, and sometimes it can be hard to tell when the way someone is treating another person crosses the line from disagreement to bullying. Some of the key differences are that bullying is something which happens repeatedly, and one person usually has power over the other person, for example a person’s manager at work.
What to do if you think someone you care about is being bullied
Let them know they can talk to you about how they are feeling. Suggest keeping a record of what has been happening as a means of helping them explain the situation to the people or service who are best placed to do something about it.
Encourage your friend or family member not to get back at the person or group bullying them – they could get hurt or get themselves into trouble. While the bullying is still going on, it is important for them to look after themselves and try to remember they deserve to be cared about and treated with respect. Maybe
offer to do things with them which make them feel good about themselves and remind them of what you like about them.

An exhibition of emerging creative talent — which has a long history of showcasing award-winning student work — is set to open at Nottingham Trent University (NTU) for its annual art and design showcase.
Graduate Festival 26, presented by the Nottingham School of Art & Design, and the Student Showcase from the School of Architecture, Design and the Built Environment, will take over NTU’s City Campus, Confetti Campus, and a range of venues across Nottingham.
Free and open to the public, the exhibitions highlight work from across a broad spectrum of creative disciplines from more than 1,300 creative students.
Subject areas span fashion, knitwear and textiles; fashion marketing and communication; fine art, photography, film and animation; graphic design and illustration; stage and screen design; music, Esports production; games art; content creation; product and furniture design; as well as architecture, interior architecture and architectural technology.
Future art & design talent to be unveiled at major exhibition
Alongside the citywide exhibitions, NTU students will present their work at leading national platforms in London. These include Graduate Fashion Week — the world’s largest showcase of new fashion talent — as well as New Designers, featuring disciplines such
as product design, textiles, illustration and animation.
The university continues to collaborate with Nottingham’s thriving creative community, with exhibitions and installations hosted in partnership with venues including Nottingham Contemporary, Nottingham Playhouse and Surface Gallery, expanding the showcase across the city.
Graduate Festival 26 opens in May at the university’s Design & Digital Arts (D&DA) building, launching with works from filmmaking, film production, and content creation students, followed by a series of exhibitions across different course areas.
The Student Showcase will open on 29 May, featuring a public exhibition of product design, furniture design and architecture, in the Newton building. Michael Marsden, Executive Dean of the Nottingham School of Art & Design, said: “Art and design play a crucial role in shaping the environments and experiences around us, and Graduate Festival 26 offers a window into what comes next.
“These exhibitions mark a significant milestone for our students —
celebrating what they have achieved while signalling the beginning of their professional journeys. We’re proud to invite audiences to discover their ideas, perspectives and creative ambitions.”
Dr Andrew Knight, Executive Dean of the School of Architecture, Design and the Built Environment, said: “Our annual showcase demonstrates the creativity, dedication and problemsolving ability of our students as they respond to real-world challenges.

has opened new facilities to help to give neurodivergent customers and people with anxiety a better experience when they fly.
A brand new Quiet Room has been developed in an area in the terminal away from the bustle of the main departure lounge, alongside which the first sensory pod of its kind at a UK airport is now available for people who need to step away from noise and sensory overload.
The launch of the new facilities comes during Neurodiversity Celebration Week which aims to recognise and celebrate the strengths of people who are neurodiverse, as well as challenge preconceptions of what they can or cannot achieve.
The Quiet Room and sensory pod enhance the airport’s award-winning Assisted Travel service, which provides support for any customer who needs help as they travel through the airport. Serving 100,000 customers for the first time in 2025, it is a popular and highly rated service that’s seeing a significant increase in requests from people with neurodivergent conditions.
As part of the Assisted Travel service, East Midlands already had Quiet Rooms in its check-in hall and departure lounge, but the room in the departure lounge is being redeveloped as a children’s activity space, enabling the move to create a new Quiet Room in an area which can also accommodate the new sensory pod. The Quiet Room offers a variety of seating options in comfortable surroundings close to boarding gates.
The pod is fully wheelchair accessible, with an electrically assisted door and acoustic insulation designed to reduce surrounding noise to levels comparable to a quiet bedroom. Its glass frontage allows users to maintain a visual connection with the external environment, and a
foldable bench is provided so a parent/ carer can also sit in the pod. The pod also includes adjustable lighting and usercontrolled ventilation. In addition, sensory equipment is available based on advice from occupational therapists.
The pod, branded as the Calmpod, has been developed and supplied by East Midlands Airport partner Oliveti Group, who carried out a survey of 203 people including neurodivergent individuals. More than a third of respondents said a lack of options for quiet spaces was a barrier to going out to a busy place and half said a dedicated quiet space would improve their experience and better support their family when visiting an airport.
East Midlands Airport’s Director of Customer Service and Planning, Mike Grimes, said: “We are proud that as part of our ongoing commitment to providing an effortless travel experience for all our customers, East Midlands Airport is the first to introduce a dedicated soundproof sensory pod of this type in the UK. Alongside a larger, modern Quiet Room in a less busy part of the departure lounge, these facilities enhance our offer of Assisted Travel to customers who need a helping hand. We know that for many, this can make the difference between being able to choose to go on holiday or not.”
Senior Project Manager at the airport Roxanne Butler oversaw the project, and has a seven-year-old son Ollie with autism who could benefit from the new facilities. She said: “It’s been interesting to work on this project and to help find ways to combine everyone’s needs, since everyone with autism has different needs and requirements. Having the Quiet Room next door to the sensory pod gives safe spaces away from the hustle and
bustle of the departure lounge where people such as Ollie who might be struggling can recompose themselves. It’s great to have the option of these facilities so you can try that method to help regulate their emotions in a safe environment.”

The survey highlighted the need for the integration of dedicated quiet spaces within most public environments. We’re proud to have developed and supplied the first dedicated CalmPod Sensory pod at East Midlands Airport, with its design informed by guidance from multiple occupational therapists to ensure an optimal sensory experience.

New Clinical Lead at Ruddington Manor
Lovett Care Group has promoted Iulia Marciuc to the role of clinical lead at Ruddington Manor, its beautiful care home in Wilford, Nottingham.
Passionate about delivering exceptional care, Nottingham resident Iulia is highly focussed on making a difference for the elders within the care home community ensuring each one is fully supported, able to thrive and live life to the fullest.A key member of the Ruddington Manor team, she has more than 10 years’ experience in the care sector commencing her career as a nurse before progressing to senior nurse and now clinical lead.
In this new role, she takes responsibility for overseeing all clinical care at Ruddington Manor, ensuring compliance through regular audits of medication, care plans and clinical practices and taking timely actions to maintain the highest standards of quality care.
More than a decade later, she still enjoys everyday as much as when she first started, building meaningful relationships with residents while aiming to make a positive difference to their lives. lulia commented: “I’m delighted to take on the role of clinical lead at Ruddington Manor and look forward to leading by example, continuing to maintain the high levels of clinical standards that we have here and taking every opportunity

Vibrating pillows
A smart pillow sleeve which vibrates to alert people who are deaf to fire and burglar alarms in the night has been created by scientists at Nottingham Trent University (NTU)
Developed with members of the Deaf community, the smart textiles technology replaces bulky gadgets that are kept under pillows which users say are uncomfortable.
The design is centred on a thin, flexible, electronic textile sleeve which features four tiny haptic actuators - measuring 3.4 mm by 12.7 mm - that are encapsulated and embedded within a yarn-like structure.
The sleeve is slipped over a standard size pillow and placed inside a normal pillow case, with the sensors at the bottom when positioned on the bed.
The electronics are connected to a smartphone, via a microcontroller, which could be wirelessly connected to household alarms and use different vibration pulses to indicate between fire alarms, burglar alarms and phone calls.
“This project was born out of feedback from user groups we worked with in the Deaf community who told us that they can’t sleep well with bulky items under their pillows,” said PhD researcher Malindu Ehelagasthenna, who developed the sleeve as part of his doctoral studies at the Nottingham School of Art & Design.
“The electronics we have embedded in the yarns of the sleeve are so tiny that they cannot be felt by the users, but when an alarm sounds they can be made to vibrate intensely
in order to wake even the most heavy sleepers.”
The yarn used in the sleeve has passed rigorous durability tests including multiple washing cycles to ensure real-world resilience. The research team are now working to develop the prototype further and seek an industrial partner who would be interested in taking the product to market.
The study is being presented at the Association for Computing Machinery CHI conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems at the Centre de Convencions Internacional de Barcelona today (13 April). The work was co-authored by Malindu Ehelagasthenna, Lars Erik Holmquist, Carlos Oliveira, Arash M. Shahidi, Pasindu Lugoda and Theo Hughes-Riley.
Dr Theo Hughes-Riley, an associate professor in NTU’s Advanced Textiles Research Group (ATRG) who supervised the research, said: “This smart design represents a significant step toward inclusive emergency alert systems, allowing deaf and deafblind individuals to sleep more safely — and with greater peace of mind and comfort.
“It has been an entirely userled development, stemming from feedback from the Deaf community, who told us exactly what kind of real world challenges they face which might be solved with electronic textiles.”

Living with Diabetes
At its core, diabetes is a condition that affects how the body controls blood sugar, also known as glucose. Glucose is the body’s main source of energy, but it relies on a hormone called insulin to move sugar from the bloodstream into the body’s cells. When that process breaks down, blood sugar levels rise, sometimes dangerously. There are two main types of diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune condition where the body attacks the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas. It often develops in childhood or early adulthood and is not linked to lifestyle choices. Type 2 diabetes, however, is far more common and is usually connected to a mix of genetics, diet, weight, and physical inactivity. In Type 2 diabetes, the body either doesn’t produce enough insulin or becomes resistant to it.
Modern lifestyles have played a major role in the rise of Type 2 diabetes. Sedentary routines, processed foods high in sugar and fat, lack of exercise, and rising obesity levels all increase the risk. Family history can also make some people more vulnerable, meaning even those with healthy habits should still pay attention to symptoms and regular check-ups. The warning signs of diabetes can sometimes appear gradually. Increased thirst, frequent urination, fatigue, blurred vision, and slowhealing wounds are among the most common symptoms. Left untreated, diabetes can lead to serious complications affecting the heart, kidneys, eyes, and nerves.
But while a diagnosis can feel overwhelming, diabetes is a condition that many people successfully manage every day. Healthy eating is one of the most important tools. This doesn’t mean giving up favourite foods forever, but learning balance — choosing whole grains, lean proteins, vegetables, and foods that release energy slowly rather than causing sugar spikes.

That’s why, for Mental Health Awareness Week 2026, NottAlone is releasing a bonus episode of The NottAlone Podcast, where hosts Dr Maddi and Dr Órlaith discuss how to start those conversations, why talking about mental health matters, and what to do if you’re worried about someone.
“You don’t have to be perfect, you just have to be you.” Says Dr Órlaith Green, Educational Psychologist and CoFounder of NottAlone.
She continues: “Most people worry about saying the wrong thing, but actually just starting the conversation is enough to get most people to open up. It can be as easy as saying something like: ‘I’ve noticed you’ve not quite been yourself just lately, do you want to talk about it?’ and then giving them space to talk.”
Dr Maddi Popoola, Educational Psychologist and Co-Founder of NottAlone also wants people to know that they’re not alone with this concern.
She said:“If you’re concerned about what to say to someone who is struggling with their mental health, please know that you’re not alone. So many people worry about saying or doing the wrong thing, or not even knowing where to start.

Small Ideas Can Make a Big Difference
A resident from Derbyshire care home has introduced a new set of children’s activity packs to help make visits more enjoyable and welcoming for younger family members.
Milford House, part of the family-run Milford Care group, has launched the packs after resident Suzanne Palmer, 81, suggested a way to help younger visitors feel more involved during visits. Drawing on her experience as a former teacher, Suzanne came up with activities that would appeal to children of different ages and help them feel more comfortable in the home.
The packs include a range of activities such as wordsearches, colouring pages, dot-to-dots and a special bumble bee hunt around the home, where children are encouraged to spot 10 hidden bees placed in different locations.
Speaking about the inspiration behind the packs, Suzanne said: “I noticed that there were more children visiting family in the home and I wanted a way to engage them. I’m always on the lookout for ways to involve children and families, as I think it is very important.”
“I recalled the activities children enjoyed when I was a teacher and we tried to tailor the activity packs for all ages. It makes me feel good to see the children getting involved in something worthwhile and thrive whilst in the home. I feel that if children have a good experience when they visit, they will be more inclined to visit again.”
The idea came about through conversations between Suzanne and the home’s team, who were keen to support her in bringing it to life. Suzanne now hopes the project will encourage others to share their own ideas and talents.
Nicole Thompson, Home Manager at Milford House, said:“What makes this initiative so special is that it came directly from Suzanne. Our Montessori ethos is about recognising what each resident can do, rather than focusing on what they may need support with, and creating opportunities for them to make choices, share their skills and contribute with purpose.“Suzanne’s activity packs are a lovely example of that in action.
With the right encouragement, her experience as a teacher has helped shape something valuable for children, families and the wider home community. The idea has also inspired further intergenerational activities, including Milo, our new mascot bear, whose name was chosen by residents and staff.”
Children and families can take Milo on their adventures and add photos to his scrapbook when he returns. So far, Milo has been on holiday to Turkey with Geoff’s grandson Jack and his family, to see Oliver! at the theatre with Suzanne and her family and skiing with June’s family. The scrapbook has become a talking point for residents, families and staff, creating another way to strengthen connections between the home and visiting families.
The packs have already been well received by visiting families, with children enjoying both the activities and the opportunity to do something alongside their loved ones. One family member said: “It is a lovely initiative. Coming into a care home environment can be quite daunting, so it is something
to involve them. It can also be something that they do with their loved one.”
Kirsty Swift, Dementia Care Coach at Milford House, said: “Suzanne took real pride in seeing the finished packs ready for children to enjoy. As someone living with dementia, her involvement is a powerful reminder that every resident has ideas, abilities and a meaningful role to play within the community.
“It was a wonderful example of how a small idea can make a big difference, while also reflecting the spirit of life at Milford House – one that values purpose, contribution and everyone’s individual strengths.”

Bereavement can leave people feeling sad, lost, and sometimes confused, but an appropriate funeral and memorial can bring great comfort and peace. At the Willows Natural Burial Ground, the tranquil surroundings of wildflower meadows, woodland, and ponds can provide great solace for those left behind as they remember the person or people they have lost.
The Willows is a 10-acre family-owned natural burial site near South Croxton, with commanding views of the Charnwood countryside, where people can be buried in hand dug graves in eco-friendly coffins or caskets, made of biodegradable materials such as cardboard, willow, wool or banana leaf to name a few. Conversely, their ashes can be buried or subsurface scattered, either in bio-degradable urns or simply poured into or onto the ground.
A range of commemorative memorials are available, made of natural materials such as Welsh slate, and wood, while many people choose to remember their loved ones by planting a tree or native rose bush.
Owners Chris and Jenny Scroby and their family, have been transforming the bare fields with extensive tree and bulb planting since opening in 2011, inviting families of the
buried or pre-purchased plots, to join in at planting weekends. They recently purchased another 3,750 native British bluebell, snowdrop and daffodil bulbs, whilst simultaneously raising money for local charities.
The Willows caters for people of all faiths or no faith. The site can accommodate graveside funerals or act solely as a burial site after a service elsewhere. If families do have a service on site, their fee includes provision of a small pop-up shelter, with limited seating and soft drinks for those attending.
The natural burial option is a cost-effective alternative to a traditional cemetery burial or cremation. Chris and Jenny work with the family’s chosen funeral directors to ensure everything goes smoothly, whilst respecting the parameters set out to protect and promote the site as a natural, wildlife friendly environment.
Chris says: “We’re very pleased with our progress, which we see as our contribution in giving something back to nature and the environment.”
