From a country house to a sea-swept shore
Whether people prefer a country house comedy or a tense coastal tragedy, Opera North’s upcoming shows at the city’s Theatre Royal fit the bill. With a new production of Mozart’s much-loved The Marriage of Figaro and the return of the company’s award-winning production of Benjamin Britten’s Peter Grimes, these are storylines which explore the human condition in all its guises with incredible scores from two of classical music’s best-known composers.
At the opening performance on Thursday 5 March, audiences are invited to attend Figaro and Susanna’s wedding celebrations in The Marriage of Figaro. While all the lovestruck couple want to do is get hitched, there are several obstacles to overcome before they say ‘I do’, not least the fact that Count Almaviva (James Newby) has his eye on the bride-to-be - and there will be big repercussions if the groom cannot pay off a loan in full. Directed by Louisa Muller with design by Madeleine Boyd, this new production sets all the action in a modern country pile. Oliver Rundell conducts Mozart’s memorable score, while the cast includes Claire Lees as Susanna and Hongni Wu as Cherubino, both making their Opera North debuts. This is the first time Opera North has performed the opera in its original Italian; English subtitles will be displayed on either side of the stage throughout.
As a response to The Marriage of Figaro, Streetwise Opera has partnered with Opera North to enable groups who have experienced homelessness in Nottingham to interpret Mozart’s work in a way that feels meaningful to them. On the afternoon of Saturday 7 March, they will be bringing their short, rewritten version of the composer’s comic masterpiece to the stage, featuring special guest artists and the Orchestra of Opera North. The piece includes new commissions by Alex Ho and Tim Lole and is directed by Rosie Kat. Ahead of the performance, Streetwise Opera will run a short, practical workshop titled ‘How to Create an Opera’, while soprano Abigail Kelly will entertain audience members with pop-up performances in the foyer before and after the event.
For younger members of the family, Little Listeners: Orchestra Unpacked takes place at 3pm on the same day. The Orchestra of Opera North is looking for mini detectives to join them on a tuneful treasure hunt, collecting a
host of hidden music gems in time for the grand finale. In this relaxed, interactive concert, singing and movement is actively encouraged. At just 45 minutes long, it is the perfect introduction to orchestral music for all ages from 12 months upwards.
The mood takes an altogether darker turn on Friday 6 March when Benjamin Britten’s heartwrenching Peter Grimes makes a welcome return.
Fisherman Peter Grimes is a complex character. Both vulnerable and violent, he becomes increasingly isolated when he is ostracised following the death of two of his apprentices. Faced with the implacable judgement of the community, haunted by guilt and increasingly unstable, Grimes’ fate hangs precariously in the balance.
Originally directed by Phyllida Lloyd and winner of the 2007 South Bank Show Opera Award, this revival is directed by Karolina Sofulak (Cavalleria Rusticana/ Aleko, 2024) with Opera North Music Director Garry Walker conducting. The stellar British cast includes John Findon in the title role with Philippa Boyle as Ellen Orford and Simon Bailey as Captain Balstrode. Hilary Summers makes her role debut as Auntie.
Isla Mundell-Perkins, Opera North’s Director of Artistic Administration, comments: “With 2026 marking 50 years since his death, it felt like the perfect time to bring back this absorbing production of what is generally considered to be Benjamin Britten’s greatest work. With the composer’s rich, emotional music underpinning the hard-hitting drama, it is everything an opera should be: relevant, soul-searching and deeply moving.”
To encourage first-timers to give opera a go, ‘New to Opera’ discounted tickets are available for £23 each at all Opera North performances in Nottingham, with £13 options for Under 30s. The Saturday performance of The Marriage of Figaro will be audio described.

Produced by Annerin Productions and Paquin Entertainment Group, Beyond Monet: The Immersive Experience celebrates the groundbreaking work of the ‘Father of Impressionism’ in mesmerising and colourful fashion. In the immersive impressionist extravaganza, cutting-edge technology breathes new life into more than 400 of the legendary French painter’s canvases, taking visitors on a spectacular and unforgettable audio-visual journey through his captivating and colourful world.
Beyond Monet brings together some of the artist’s most famous paintings –including Poppies, Impression: Sunrise and his exquisite Water Lilies series – with lesser-known works which all swirl around the space, offering a fresh and exciting new look at much-loved masterpieces and a deeper connection with Monet, his subjects and his innovative technique.
Taking inspiration from Musée de l’Orangerie in Paris, the designated home of Monet’s works, visitors can freely roam the Infinity Room where they are transported inside the paintings themselves to the accompaniment of a moving original score.
Meanwhile, Beyond Van Gogh: The Immersive Experience brings together more than 300 of the post-Impressionist icon’s paintings blended with cutting-edge technology and a specially curated musical soundtrack to tell
the story of one of history’s most influential artists, with people able to wander through iconic works - including The Starry Night, Sunflowers and Terrace of a Café at Night - as they came alive around them.
Each visit is also enhanced by the addition of a special ‘reflection’ room. Art lovers will be able to enjoy walking through an exquisite space influenced by Monet’s gardens at Giverny, and a bloom-flanked Sunflower Alley paying tribute to Vincent Van Gogh.
Nottingham visitors are some of the first to experience the new space, which received its world premiere in Liverpool last summer. Meanwhile the experiences’ visit to Nottingham coincides with the start of school summer holidays making both immersive attractions the perfect day out for all the family to enjoy.

Food & Drink
La Storia
Family-run restaurant with a passion for freshly prepared, home-cooked style meals straight from the heart of Italy.
Finally, after several visits I decided to have an official ‘review visit’ to La Storia, I go about once a year so this was definitely overdue. Locally it is known as a fantastic Italian but for those further afield La Storia is a small independent just next to the cricket ground.
A lot of people I know LOVE this place but my previous visits have always been tinged with annoyance (crap potatoes on a Sunday roast, my mother in law ordered a pasta dish with blueberries that looked vile). But all these people that love it – they probably had a meal a bit more like the one I had for this review.
Arriving for our reservation (booking is required) the two dining rooms were full and the host was warm, funny and attentive when showing us to our table. We were hidden behind the bar next to the sundries they sell (olives/pasta etc) and had a great view of the whole restaurant. The service at La Storia deserves a mention at this point, the staff there are VERY efficient and look like they are
having a good time – you can’t really pay for that kind of energy and it is contagious.
I noticed while reviewing the menu that one of the starters came with blackberry gel, what is the obsession with putting berries where they shouldn’t be? We were delivered water and then our waiter introduced himself and before I knew what was happening our food was ordered, our drinks had been delivered and all our menus whisked away. This is not a criticism – the ‘dance’ of service is fast paced but that suits us. Me and The Northerner shared starters of Olives and Roasted Peppers, 2 big parties came into the restaurant as our food was delivered and it was at capacity from then until we left at nearly 22:00. The olives had some superfluous dried herbs sprinkled on top of them which was a shame as they were delicious on their own, the ones underneath that had managed to avoid the sprinkle being far better. The stuffed pepper was sublime – the taste of mediterranean vegetables expertly cooked was
I like eating out, trying new restaurants and being on the receiving end of great hospitality. I am a mum with 2 children (one baby, one 9 year old) so I include how the places I visit work for families. I have worked in bars, cafes, restaurants and pubs for most of my life. Good places should be supported, celebrated and shared.
NOTTINGHAM FOOD CRITIC
hefty and warming. They were soft and giving but not sloppy and charred, the generous amount of cheese and focaccia made a very simple dish feel more substantial and worth the (nearly £10) cost.
The pepper dish set my expectations high for the main course and I was not let down. I ordered the Halibut despite my hatred of crushed new potatoes and it was amazing. It didn’t look like the most attractive dish of food I had eaten in a long time (the sauce resembling a canteen soup from my days working in an office) but it was certainly the tastiest. Now, for complete transparency this dish was £33 pounds, but Halibut is not cheap and the portion was very generous.
The fish was cooked well – flaking under the pressure of a knife and no cotton wool-iness that sometimes gives away it has gone over. The crushed new potatoes had been made into a disc and fried, turning an element of the dish I thought I would ignore into a welcome addition. There wasn’t a chewy, fibrous potato skin in sight. The nut butter balanced the dish beautifully and added more richness, which is all I wanted on a cold, dark night.
As I looked over to The Northerner (who was by this point tucking into his Lasagne) my heart dropped, he
was chewing really slowly and on closer inspection I saw a mushroom poking out the lasagne. Anyone that has read a few of my reviews will know he’s not a fussy person but he will not tolerate any kind of funghi. Perhaps he hadn’t noticed. Perhaps he might agree the mushroom added an earthiness the dish needed. No. His face fell and we decided to wait for the courtesy check (which was only 2-3 mouthfuls after the food was delivered) and get him something different.
The Northerner explained to the waiter his hatred of mushrooms and the waiter started apologising profusely, we tried
to reassure. This wasn’t their fault at all but could he get another pasta dish, whatever was quickest. ‘Of course’ said the waiter and within 5 minutes a new dish was delivered. It was the special from the blackboard and we both ended up finishing at the same time. The Northerner had also ordered a side of potatoes with cheese and bacon which he was too full to finish.
Despite both of us being full we soldiered on with Tiramisu for pudding. Again any followers will know it is one of my favourite desserts as long as it isn’t messed about with too much. I had a tiramisu before at La Storia and they delivered it in a kilner
jar with all kinds of random things on top of it like a Hungry Horse Sundae. Ordering it again was my version of ‘risk taking’. This time the tiramisu was for grown ups and presented in the way god intended. On a plate, without the faff. I was beaming and it was glorious, the best tiramisu I have had in Nottingham restaurant.
I can now join the hordes of people that love La Storia and nod in agreement as they sing it’s praises. The tiramisu means I might even order something a bit more ‘out there’ next time and be pleasantly surprised. Not blueberries in pasta though, I’m not insane.

You simply cannot argue with the fact that coffee and cake go together hand in hand. Whether you’re sitting on the sofa at home binge watching your favourite TV show or meeting up at a suave café in town with your friends, it is the perfect little treat. You can’t go wrong with a bit of sponge and coffee, or can you? What you didn’t know about this well-loved delicacy is that there are certain combinations which perfectly complement one another allowing you to indulge that little bit more. Find that perfect sponge cake for your caramel latte or perhaps a fruity scone for your flat white. The possibilities are endless, but this is how you properly pair your hot and sweet tea time treats.
For stronger drinks such as Americanos, Espressos and Flat Whites, the intense coffee flavour overwhelms any other, providing that indulgent and rich taste. This potent strength requires a zesty and light cake to go with it, perhaps a scone, toasted tea cake or maybe even lemon drizzle or carrot cake in order to achieve the perfect flavour sensation. Avoid rich and chocolatey cakes as the flavours of coffee and chocolate might be too overwhelming for some taste buds. Milkier coffees like a latte give you a silkier taste meaning it is the ultimate companion for rich and velvety sponge cakes.
Whether mouth-watering chocolate fudge cakes are your favourite or you prefer sumptuous red velvet, delicately decorated with cream cheese frosting, the latte provides the ideal basis for cake heaven.
Iced coffees are different yet again. You see, although they are very much like lattes in their composition, the fact they are ice cold is a complete game changer. Although they can be paired marvellously with rich cakes like a latte can, they amazingly complement hot cakes too such as scones, tea cakes and hot chocolate puddings in order to balance your hot and cold treats. Of course in warmer months who really wants to eat hot cakes? In which case, their milky content is also fantastically matched with summer nibbles such as fresh fruit for the ultimate cooling experience. To enjoy your iced coffee even more, add a scoop of ice cream or a hint of flavoured syrup for that extra burst of flavour.

'When Flamingos Dance' are the signature pieces in this collection and the inspiration behind the brand...
'When Flamingos Dance was a breakthrough for me — both as an artist and a new mum. Postpartum, I felt myself fading until something clicked while painting this duo. Soon after (and fittingly, after I’d already named it), I discovered the phrase “getting your pink back” — a way new mums describe reclaiming their identity and energy, inspired by flamingos that temporarily lose their colour while raising their young.'
Krissy is a Rossendale based abstract artist and founder of Find Your Pink, creating bold, colourful artworks inspired by her own journey to rediscover vibrancy after motherhood. She helps women move from indecision to creating homes that feel like true sanctuaries of self-expression.

The People's Picture Project
A huge mosaic made entirely from photographs submitted by fans and local people has been permanently installed at Motorpoint Arena Nottingham, commissioned to mark the venue’s 25th anniversary.
The large-scale artwork in the arena foyer features over 5,000 fan images – from first gigs and family nights out to childhood memories and once-in-a-lifetime experiences – submitted by the community as part of the People's Picture Project. Over 12 months, fans from across the UK and worldwide contributed images to create the 6.5-metre artwork, which will be permanently displayed in the foyer. The mosaic was unveiled on Thursday 22 January at a special event attended by contributors and local media.
Martin Ingham, CEO of Motorpoint Arena Nottingham, said: "When you look closely at this mosaic, you don't just see photographs – you see real lives, memories and moments that have shaped this venue. Every image represents a genuine connection to this place, and bringing all those stories together creates something truly meaningful. We're proud to give these shared memories a permanent home, and to celebrate the ongoing story of the Motorpoint Arena for years to come. With huge thanks to artist Helen Marshall, who has captured what makes this venue such a special place for performers, fans, and everyone who's made memories here."
Created in collaboration with British artist Helen Marshall, known for large-scale participatory projects including The People's Moon, the project invited people to submit photos and stories reflecting their personal connection to the venue over the past 25 years.
Christina Avraam from Arnold, Nottingham, whose image features in the mosaic, said: “I can’t believe a picture I took with my phone so many years ago became part of something like this. It feels incredibly special to know my memory is now woven into the story of the venue. The Motorpoint Arena isn’t just a building – it’s part of Nottingham’s heartbeat and a place where I’ve made so many incredible memories!”
A digital version allows visitors to explore individual images and stories online: Now and Then Mosaic - The People's Picture
The People's Picture Project is part of the arena's year-long 25th anniversary celebrations and marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter. This summer, the venue will launch its first-ever immersive art exhibitions, Beyond Van Gogh and Beyond Monet, while a brand-new entranceway redesign will transform the customer experience. These developments underscore Motorpoint Arena Nottingham's reputation for innovation and its commitment to continually raising the bar. The mosaic serves as a lasting reminder of the community at the heart of it all, as the venue builds on 25 years of success and looks confidently toward the future.
Spotlight on West Bridgford
In terms of property types, West Bridgford offers a broad range. In the older town heart and surrounding neighbour hoods you’ll find period Victorian and Edwardian houses, many with character features and generous room sizes, some set as semi-detached or terraced properties. There are also modern estates such as Compton Acres built in the 1990s, featuring larger detached and semi-detached family homes with garages and gardens. Smaller apartments and townhouses are sprinkled through the area, and you’ll see both fairly large family houses with four or five bedrooms and smaller three-bedroom homes suited to first-time buyers or downsizers.
For families, schools are a major
West Bridgford is a prosperous, leafy suburb located roughly 2 miles south of Nottingham city centre, beloved by families, professionals and commuters alike thanks to its excellent transport links, green spaces and vibrant town centre. Its housing market reflects this appeal — prices tend to be higher than many other areas around Nottingham, but you get quality stock and strong local demand.
draw in West Bridgford. The suburb is served by a number of well-regarded primary schools such as Greythorn Primary and Heymann Primary, which consistently receive high ratings, as well as Lady Bay Primary nearby. When it comes to secondary education, The West Bridgford School is a prominent local comprehensive with a large, established community, and other options include The Nottingham Emmanuel School, a Church of England secondary with sixth form provision. These strong school options are part of what keeps buyer interest high and properties competitive.
West Bridgford’s shopping facilities are centred around Central Avenue and Bridgford Road, which combine
independent boutiques with familiar high-street names like Marks & Spencer ( for food ) , fashion stores, cafes and specialist local businesses. There are also supermarkets such as ASDA and Morrisons within easy reach, and a monthly farmers’ market that draws locals for fresh produce and artisan goods. Outdoor lovers benefit from nearby parks like Bridgford Park and Rushcliffe Country Park, as well as scenic riverside walks along the Trent.
When the sun sets, West Bridgford’s nightlife and dining scene comes alive with a range of options from relaxed pubs and cocktail lounges to contemporary restaurants. Popular places include The Botanist, Escabeche and Portello Lounge alongside cafes (Costa, Caffè Nero) and internationallyinspired eateries such as Wagamama and Giggling Squid. Traditional pubs like The Stratford Haven and The Test Match offer a cosy local atmosphere, while more stylish bars on Central Avenue cater to after-work drinks and weekend socialising.
All told, West Bridgford blends suburban calm with city convenience, excellent education options, great shopping and a lively dining and social scene — though its popularity does mean prices and competition for homes can be strong, so planning your purchase carefully is well worth it.

Getting your car looking like new
After a car accident, one of the most common steps in restoring a vehicle to its original condition is getting it resprayed with new paintwork.
The need for respraying typically arises when the car suffers visible damage to its paint, such as scratches, dents, or more severe bodywork damage. While repairs to the vehicle’s frame and structure are necessary, the paint job is crucial for both aesthetic and protective reasons.
The process of respraying a car begins with a thorough assessment of the damage. Any dents or scratches that are present will need to be repaired or filled in before the painting process begins. This is followed by sanding down the existing paint to create a smooth surface for the new coat of paint to adhere to. If the car has any rust, it must be addressed as well, as failing to treat rust can lead to further deterioration over time.
Next, the car is cleaned to remove any dirt, grease, or debris. This ensures that the paint applies evenly and does not get contaminated. After that, a primer is usually applied to provide better adhesion for the paint and to prevent
corrosion. Once the primer has dried, the new paint is sprayed on in layers. Multiple coats are often applied to ensure even coverage and to achieve a high-quality, durable finish. Finally,
a clear coat is applied to protect the paintwork and provide a glossy, smooth finish. This process can take several days, depending on the extent of the damage and the quality of the work being done.
Getting a car resprayed not only restores its appearance but also helps protect the vehicle from the elements, keeping it in good condition and maintaining its value.
Garden of Hope
We are delighted to announce the confirmed tour dates for The Garden of Hope, a powerful and moving installation created to spark conversations around mental health and suicide prevention:
Belton House: 15 March – 18 April
Gunby Hall: 20 April – 9 May
Ayscoughfee Hall: 11 May – 30 May
Burghley House: 1 June – 20 June
Whisby Nature Park: 22 June – 18 July
Grantham House: 20 July – 30 Sept
About The Garden of Hope
98 suicides were registered in Lincolnshire in 2024*.There are 98 butterflies in our Garden of Hope - each one represents and honours one of those lives. The impact of a suicide reaches far beyond the individual and is devastating for those affected. Research shows that a single death can deeply affect up to 135 people. Together, these butterflies also symbolise the estimated 13,230 family members, friends, colleagues and community members left carrying the weight of that loss.
We know the word “suicide” can feel daunting, but by talking about it, we can dismantle stigma and plant seeds of hope. Our aim is simple: to open important conversations about mental health, suicide prevention, and—most importantly—hope. * It is important to note that suicide rates are based on date of registration of death, which happens after an inquest and can sometimes take more than a year.
A Community of Hope
Every butterfly in this installation has been lovingly painted by members of our local community — schools, groups, families, and individuals — reflecting just how deeply these issues matter across all ages and backgrounds. From pre - school children to residents in a retirement community, the artwork represents a true cross - section of our community, each piece carrying its own story of hope and care. We are profoundly grateful to everyone who has contributed their time, creativity, and heart to bringing this
installation to life.
The steel butterflies
The steel butterflies are being made locally by Grantham Fabrication. We extend our sincere thanks to Grantham Fabrication for designing and creating the beautiful butterflies, and for their unwavering enthusiasm and support throughout the project.
Why Butterflies?
Butterflies symbolise transformation, freedom, and hope. Their journey from caterpillar to chrysalis to butterfly reminds us that change—even when slow or challenging—can lead to something beautiful. Seeing a butterfly is a gentle reminder that growth takes time, but it’s worth it - and that hope can carry us through until brighter days arrive.
Funding and support
This project has been generously funded by the SK Community Fund.
We are also grateful to Grantham Arts for hosting our community workshops. We are deeply appreciative of all our hosting locations for their generous support. In particular, we offer special thanks to the National Trust at Belton House, whose partnership has been essential in bringing this project to life.
About Evelyn’s Butterfly Effect
Evelyn’s Butterfly Effect is a community initiative run by Evelyn’s parents, Jack and Jenni, created in loving memory of their daughter, Evelyn Gibson, who tragically died by suicide in 2022 aged just 15. Evelyn was known for her kind heart, and this project honours her legacy by encouraging kindness, connection, and positive change around mental health.
Quote from Jenni
“Our aim with this project is to open important conversations about mental health, suicide prevention, and—most importantly—hope.
Evelyn often shared that she never wanted anyone else to endure what she did — to feel caught in that exhausting battle with their own mind, searching for a way forward. She wanted no-one else to feel that pain. Although she is no longer here, those conversations remain at the heart of Evelyn’s Butterfly Effect, guiding everything we do. In this Garden of Hope, each butterfly carries a message of comfort and a reminder that change is possible.
We were inspired by two important installations in 2025 CALM’s Missed Birthdays and the Headlight Project’s Garden of Hope - two powerful examples of how public art can hold space for grief, spark connection, and make people stop and feel. The Headlight Project’s Garden of Hope demonstrated how something personal, like painting a butterfly, can offer comfort and expression to families and communities.
We were incredibly inspired by CALM’s Missed Birthdays installation and the way it turned statistics into something visual and impossible to ignore. In the same way, we hope the Garden of Hope will catch people’s attention from a distance with its colour and beauty, and then, as they step closer, reveal the true meaning behind the butterflies. That moment of realisation can be incredibly powerful, and we hope it gently opens the door to conversations that really matter.
We’ve carried those ideas into something meaningful for Lincolnshire. Both projects reminded us why this work matters: when communities create something beautiful and meaningful together, people feel seen, supported, and less alone. That’s the spirit behind our project, and we hope it gently opens the door to conversations that really matter.“

Separation brings difficult decisions. Where will the children live? How do you divide your finances fairly? Who keeps the family home? These questions can feel impossible to answer when emotions are running high and communication has broken down.
Rather than battling things out in court, family mediation gives you and your former partner the chance to work through these issues together, with professional support.
What is family mediation?
Family mediation brings you and your former partner together with an impartial, professionally trained mediator to discuss and resolve the issues arising from your separation. It’s a form of non-court dispute resolution (NCDR) that gives you both a voice in shaping your future, rather than leaving those decisions to a judge.
A family mediator doesn’t take sides, offer legal advice, or tell you what to do. Instead, they create a safe space for balanced discussions, help you identify the key issues you need to address, and guide you towards agreements that reflect your family’s unique needs and circumstances.
Whether you’re working through arrangements for your children, dividing assets, sorting out finances, or tackling all of these areas at once, mediation provides the structure and support to have these difficult conversations productively.
What are the benefits of family
mediation?
You
make
the decisions that affect your family
Going to court means giving up control. A judge who doesn’t know you, your children, or your circumstances will make binding decisions. With family mediation, you and your former partner stay firmly in charge. You understand your family better than anyone else, and mediation recognises that by putting the power to create solutions back in your hands.
It costs significantly less than court proceedings
The financial impact of separation is considerable enough without adding
expensive legal battles to the mix. Court proceedings require each party to fund separate legal representation through months or years of hearings. The costs quickly spiral into tens of thousands of pounds.
Mediation works differently. You share the cost of the family mediator between you, and most couples complete the process in just three to five sessions. We often recommend this route to clients precisely because it protects your financial resources whilst still achieving fair outcomes.
You’ll reach resolution faster
Time matters when you’re trying to rebuild your life. Court proceedings typically take many months or even years to reach final orders. Mediation resolves issues in much more quickly and at your pace. This efficiency means you can start your next chapter sooner rather than staying stuck in separation limbo for years.
It’s less stressful for everyone involved
mediation, you’re taking advantage of a process specifically designed to help separating couples reach cooperative agreements that actually work in practice.
The adversarial nature of court creates tension. You’re positioned as opponents. Everything you say can be used against you. The formality of courtrooms and cross-examination adds to the pressure. Mediation takes a different approach. Discussions happen in an informal, private setting. Everything said remains confidential and can’t be brought up in any future court proceedings if mediation doesn’t work out. This creates space for honest conversations without the fear that your words will be weaponised later.
It’s a proven form of noncourt dispute resolution
Family mediation stands as one of the most effective forms of NCDR available. These methods are increasingly encouraged because they allow families to resolve disputes constructively without the formality, expense and stress that court proceedings create. By choosing
Understanding how family mediation actually works
If you’ve never been through mediation before, it’s natural to wonder what happens in the room and whether it’s right for your situation.
Everyone begins with a Mediation Information and Assessment Meeting (MIAM). You’ll meet with a family mediator individually – not together – to talk through how the process works. This session gives you the chance to ask questions, raise concerns, and decide whether mediation feels right for you. There’s no pressure. If you don’t want to proceed after your MIAM, you can walk away.
Should family mediation be a process that you feel could assist you to resolve outstanding issues between you and your former spouse or partner, then please contact Gayle Rowley (Legal Director, Solicitor & Mediator).

DERELICT PHONE BOX
TRANSFORMED INTO BEACON OF HOPE BY HOMELESSNESS CHARITY
A disused phone box in Nottingham has been transformed into a beacon of hope as a resource to help vulnerable people sleeping on the streets find support
The phone box in the Hockley area of the city has been officially opened today (19 Jan) by Framework and It’s in Nottingham and will now provide an invaluable resource to signpost rough sleepers and the general public to vital support.
A map showing the locations of a range of services from street kitchens, clothing and essentials to harm reduction, advice and wellbeing services adorns the new ‘hope box’.
Artwork created by people being supported by the Nottingham Recovery Network and residents of Framework’s newly opened Grove House, the accommodation for women previously sleeping on the streets, provide inspiring messages of hope and recovery.
Phil was one of several service users invited by Framework to create artwork to transform the phone box, taking part in artist-led weekly sessions.
Following personal loss, Phil began taking drugs as a way to cope with grief. When his use escalated to almost daily and became unmanageable, he sought help from Nottingham Recovery Network. Now drug-free, Phil continues his recovery with plans to volunteer and support others on their journey.
Phil said: "Nottingham Recovery
Network’s support helped me feel understood and not alone, and gave me practical tools to cope with difficult emotions in a healthier way. The workshop was really meaningful for me — the theme of transformation and hope reflected my recovery journey, and creating the piece felt like a powerful expression of clarity and positive change."
The women at Grove House creating the art pieces also shared what it meant to them.
“If there was a place that showed you exactly where to go if you needed help, that would’ve helped me. When you’re struggling and don’t know the area, not knowing where to go just makes everything worse.”
Another spoke about the art piece she had created: "No matter who you are, if you have mental health issues or you're disabled - if you have a dream, you can achieve it."
The freephone number for the general public to alert the charity to any people who are sleeping rough will also be on display. The Street Outreach Team will try to find them and provide support. Freephone 0800 066 5356 or text ‘SOT’ followed by a message to 80800.
A series of campaigns will run in the Hope
Box, starting with the chance to donate via a QR code to help Framework purchase birth certificates for people in need to enable them to access vital services including accommodation, bank accounts and support.
Framework’s Head of Fundraising and Communications Claire Eden said: “It is wonderful to be asked to participate in the transformation of this iconic phone box, turning it into an artwork and a resource for people who are homeless or at risk of rough sleeping. Framework service users have thoroughly enjoyed participating in the art sessions and are delighted to be present at the launch of the project today. We'd like to thank It's in Nottingham, Carousel, and Grow Notts for reaching out to Framework and its service users.”
Alex Flint, CEO of Nottingham's city centre Business Improvement District, It's in Nottingham said; "We are proud to have been able to support Framework in this project which will provide a source of important information for vulnerable people in our city centre.
"The restoration of this iconic phone box has not only transformed a vandalised eyesore, it has created an attractive and functional landmark in Nottingham which will help to make the city centre a safer and more welcoming place."
For anyone who would like to make a difference to the lives of people sleeping on the streets, Framework - now in its 25th anniversary year - has charity fundraising places available at running events across the region.

2026, LYNDON TOP, RUTLAND UK.
The island nation of São Tomé and Príncipe, in the Gulf of Guinea is the second smallest country in Africa. Covering an area smaller than Greater London and characterised by its incredible tropical forest landscapes, it is recognised as a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO. São Tomé and Príncipe is home to exceptionally high numbers of endemic species, some of which currently face extinction.
THE FLAGSHIP SPECIES FOR THIS YEAR’S GLOBAL BIRDFAIR CONSERVATION PROJECT IS THE DWARF IBIS WITH A POPULATION OF PROBABLY LESS THAN 2,000 INDIVIDUALS.
These Island Endemic species, although protected by law, are still extremely vulnerable to habitat loss due to agricultural development, extraction of timber and unsustainable hunting, as well as disturbance, predation and competition from invasive mammals.
Youth theatre group
The Global Birdfair 2026 Preventing Island Extinctions project donation will enable BirdLife International to adapt and design practical actions to reduce threats to at least three Critically Endangered Endemic Bird species in São Tomé, while building conservation capacity and raising awareness throughout the country.
Education and engagement are the key to success. BirdLife will work with a network of ornithologists with specific knowledge of São Tomé and Príncipe endemics together with in-country early career conservationists and students, representatives from National Park authorities, hunters and local communities to deliver the project.
Preventing the extinction of the most vulnerable and special species in São Tomé and Príncipe is an urgent conservation priority, as it is for many endemic species in other island nations.
Looking forward, here is a wonderful opportunity for the population of this island nation as they become increasingly aware of their home’s
unique biodiversity: developing a sustainable tourism offer focused on avitourism and the country’s national parks which will benefit the future for both birds and people.
Gates open at 9am each day. Friday and Saturday events run through to the evening, included in your ticket price. Family tickets are available on Sunday; under 18s have free entry with ticket holding adults on all 3 days.
We offer a free shuttle bus from Oakham Station and free parking on site. Mobility scooters are available to hire. Campers, caravans and motorhomes can book to stay on site.
A talented local youth theatre group is set to light up the stage this February with performances of the hit musical Crazy for You Youth Edition. LEOS Youth Group, based in Nottinghamshire, is performing the show from 19 to 21 February at the Duchess Theatre, Long Eaton.
Bursting with Gershwin’s unforgettable music, including ‘I got Rhythm’ and ‘Slap that Bass’, the show promises an evening of pure entertainment for audiences of all ages.
From dazzling dance numbers with highenergy tap routines to laugh-out-loud comedy, Crazy for You Youth Edition is a feel-good classic. LEOS Youth Group perform twice a year and has previously put on NODA-award-winning shows such as Les Misérables, Matilda, and Oklahoma.
Audiences are encouraged to book early, as tickets are selling fast. Don’t miss the chance to support a local youth theatre and enjoy a joyful, toe-tapping musical this February.

There was a time when the question was simple: church hall or country house? Roast beef or salmon? But today’s couples are asking something far more existential - home soil or foreign shores?
In the age of curated Instagram grids and once-in-a-lifetime experiences, choosing where to say “I do” has become less about logistics and more about identity. A wedding in the UK offers tradition, familiarity and legal ease. A wedding abroad promises sunshine, spectacle and a built-in honeymoon. But beneath the glossy brochures and Pinterest boards lies a far more nuanced decision. Let’s unpack the romance and the reality.
The Case for Staying in the UK
There’s something quietly powerful about marrying where your story began. The UK offers everything from windswept Scottish castles to refined Georgian townhouses and rustic Cotswolds barns. You don’t need a passport to find drama.
Legal Simplicity
Getting married in the UK is refreshingly straightforward. Civil ceremonies are governed by local registry offices, while religious ceremonies — whether in the Church of England, a Catholic parish, or another faith institution, follow wellestablished processes. No translations and no embassy visits.
Guest Attendance
Let’s be honest: Grandma is more likely to make it to Surrey than Santorini. A UK wedding typically means higher attendance and fewer difficult conversations about cost, childcare or annual leave. For couples who prioritise having everyone there, staying local is often the most inclusive choice.
The Weather (Yes, Really)
We love to mock British weather, but unpredictability has its own romance. A dramatic sky over the Lake District? Iconic. And unlike destination weddings, UK venues are built with contingency plans in mind. Rain rarely ruins the day, it simply adds character.
Home or Horizon?
The Financial Reality
Contrary to popular belief, a wedding abroad isn’t always cheaper and neither is staying home. The UK wedding industry is famously robust (and expensive), but it also offers transparency. You know the currency. You know the suppliers. You’re less likely to encounter surprise “destination premiums.”
The Allure of Saying “I Do” Abroad
Then again — there’s the Amalfi Coast. There’s a reason British couples flock to places like Lake Como, Santorini and Marbella. A wedding abroad feels cinematic. The light is softer. The photos glow differently. The champagne tastes, somehow, more celebratory.
Built-In Intimacy
Destination weddings naturally trim the guest list and what initially feels awkward can become liberating. Fewer guests often means a long weekend rather than a single whirlwind day. Instead of 120 acquaintances, you’re celebrating with your inner circle over sunset dinners and poolside breakfasts.
Wedding and Honeymoon in One Logistically elegant and emotionally seamless, marrying abroad allows couples to slide straight into honeymoon mode. No airport transfers in a postwedding daze — you’re already there.
The Complications We Don’t Talk About
But here’s the part that rarely makes the mood board.
Legal Hurdles
Some countries require residency periods, translated documents, or complex civil processes. Many couples opt for a legal ceremony in the UK first, often at a registry office followed by a symbolic ceremony abroad. Romantic? Yes. But also administratively doubled.
Guest Costs
A UK wedding asks guests for a gift and perhaps a hotel room. A destination wedding asks for flights, accommodation and time off work. For some loved ones, attendance simply isn’t feasible and that absence can sting.
Planning from Afar
Planning a wedding is stressful. Planning one in another language, with unfamiliar suppliers and time zones, elevates that stress. Even with a planner, relinquishing control can be challenging for couples used to hands-on organisation.
So...What Really Matters?
At its heart, the debate isn’t about geography. It’s about values. Do you imagine a packed dance floor filled with every chapter of your life? Or an intimate terrace dinner overlooking the sea? Do you prioritise accessibility and traditionor atmosphere and adventure?
The UK offers emotional proximity and practical ease. Abroad offers escapism and intensity. Neither is inherently better. Both can be extraordinary. The truth is, the best weddings all share the same ingredients: intention, warmth and a couple clear about what matters most to them. The location sets the scene, but the marriage begins wherever you choose to stand.
Lifestyle
With Mother’s Day just around the corner, many shoppers will be flocking to supermarkets and florists to purchase flowers as a token of their appreciation.
A bouquet is one of the most popular gifts to receive on Mother’s Day but cut flowers unfortunately don’t last long. Without proper care, flowers can start wilting within just a few days.
Fortunately, there are ways to ensure flowers last for a week or even longer – and it all comes down to preventing conditions that allow bacteria to flourish, according to one gardening expert. Julian de Bosdari, of UK plant nursery Ashridge, has compiled his top tips to prolong the lifespan of your flowers.
Choose a long-lasting variety
For those buying a cut bouquet this Mother’s Day, one of the easiest ways to ensure the longevity of your flowers is to opt for a naturally long-lasting variety. Chrysanthemums, carnations and orchids are more durable varieties that can survive for several weeks and enable your loved one to enjoy their bouquet for longer. On the other hand, more delicate varieties, such as tulips and peonies, have a vase life of around five days, and are likely to wilt much more quickly.
Always start with a clean vase
The very first thing you should do with your bouquet is make sure you have a clean vase to place them in. Vases with narrow openings are harder to clean and are prone to trapping bacteria, which can contaminate the water and cause flowers to age and decompose quicker. Glass and ceramic vases make for better options, as they are easier to clean, and wil elevate the look of your bouquet.
Trim
flower stems at an angle
Cut flower bouquets have their stems precut but they are likely to have closed up by the time you purchase them. Therefore, it’s important to trim half an inch off each stem at a 45-degree angle using a clean knife or pair of sharp scissors, before setting your flowers in a vase. Cutting the stems diagonally maximises the surface area for water absorption, allowing your flowers to stay more hydrated. Trim the stems of your flowers every couple of days to allow flowers the best chance of absorbing water.
Remove foliage below the water line
Any leaves or petals submerged in vase water should be removed as they can promote bacterial growth. Bacteria can clog the stems, which obstructs water absorption and shortens the lifespan of your flowers. Keep any healthy foliage above the water line, to preserve your bouquet and make it look as full as possible.
Keep flowers out of sunlight and away from fruit
Flowers should be kept away from direct sunlight and heat sources as these can cause wilting. Direct sun and heat also prompt buds to bloom quicker, shortening the bouquet’s lifespan. Place your flowers in a cooler environment with plenty of indirect light and keep them away from the fruit bowl, as ripening fruit can produce an odourless gas called ethylene, which causes flowers to age and drop petals more quickly.
Change the vase water regularly
Make sure the water in your vase is clean and change it often to remove any bacteria. This should be done every two days, but you can also do it daily, especially for more delicate varieties. If the vase water is visibly cloudy or has debris in it, this is a sign that it needs replacing with fresh water.
Use nourishing flower food
You often get a small sachet of liquid flower food with your bouquet, so make sure to add this to the water, when you first put them in a vase. Add additional flower food each time you replace the water. If you can’t get your hands on proper flower food, you can make a homemade solution by adding two tablespoons of sugar and two tablespoons of white vinegar to one litre of lukewarm water. The sugar provides energy to nourish the flowers, while the white vinegar lowers the water’s pH, which improves water absorption and helps to remove bacteria from the water.
Check on your flowers often and handle them with care
Regularly check up on your flowers and remove any wilting petals. This not only makes your bouquet look healthier, but also prevents the spread of bacteria in the vase water. Cutting off wilting foliage gives new buds space to bloom, resulting in a flourishing bouquet that’s even bigger and more beautiful. Avoid crushing or squeezing the stems as this can cut off water uptake to the plant. Petals are particularly delicate – treat them with care to prevent any damage and keep them looking their best.
Julian de Bosdari, CEO of Ashridge says, “Flowers are one of the most beloved Mother’s Day gifts, and it’s disappointing that they don’t last longer than they do. Sheer Bliss
We all associate spa days with being the ultimate relaxing experience, lounging about in a white robe, poolside, whilst you sip expensive drinks and enjoy the different treatments. But do we all really get the most out of our spa experience?
With the extensive list of treatments on offer it can be pretty overwhelming to choose one that is right for you - get to know a bit about what the top treatments really consist of before plunging into sheer bliss: With the extensive list of treatments on offer it can be pretty overwhelming to choose one that is right for you - get to know a bit about what the top treatments really consist of before plunging into sheer bliss:
Massages
Massages are the most popular and famous spa treatment, known for their powers of relaxation and stress relief, but what you probably won’t know is the health benefits which also come alongside the feelgood sensation. Although a massage only lasts around an hour, the advantages last much longer; proven to stimulate and help to maintain your physical, mental and emotional well-being, massages have a lasting beneficial effect on your whole body.
There are many different types of massage on offer from Swedish to deep tissue for a de-stressing and calming experience to sports and remedial massages which target a specific area of your body and relieve tension to sports injuries and strains - there is a massage type for everyone. Ask your masseuse or a muscle expert about which type of massage would be best for you.
Facials
Increasingly more popular, facials are something which you can buy yourself and do at home, however getting your facial from a packet means you sacrifice the luxury and pleasure of being intensely pampered. Booking a facial at a spa gives you many options from anti-ageing serums and exfoliation selections which restore your natural glow to facial massages for those who have tight facial muscles and skin from built up
stress - you can’t get that at home.
Beauty treatments
From various waxing packages to leave you feeling smooth and fabulous to full manicures and pedicures, most spas offer a range of intense beauty sessions which leave you feeling like royalty. Waxing can include legs, arms, front and back and your sensitive areas, saving you the trouble of adapting awkward positions to avoid razor cuts and providing a smooth and comfortable finish. Manicures and pedicures usually consist of a cleansing treatment before having your nails pampered to perfection, leaving you feeling confident and looking fabulous.
Speciality treatments
Looking for that extra something to top off your massage or facial? Speciality treatments are the perfect way to get more out of your spa experience and try something new. For detox and re-mineralising treatments try different body wraps, or for exfoliation salt glows and scrubs are the way to go! Different substances provide various results so take your pick from seaweed, hot stone, mud, clay or cream to find the treatment for you.
These are just a few of the relaxing treatments awaiting you on your next luxurious spa retreat. Whichever treatment is right for you, get booking now for a relaxing start to the new year.
World Sleep Day
HOW TO IMPROVE YOUR QUALITY OF SLEEP
World Sleep Day on Friday
13 March highlights the importance of sleep for overall health and wellbeing but with so many stresses and calls on our time, it’s difficult to always unwind and relax enough to make sure that our sleep is as sound as it might be.
Sleep is important because while we rest, our biology is hard at work, repairing everyday cell damage, restoring energy reserves, supporting brain function and nurturing our gut microbiome. Quite simply, good sleep is one of the most powerful health tools we have.
So, how can we help our bodies to arrive at that point where we are relaxed enough to sleep deeply?
Dr Lucy Williamson is a registered nutritionist and gut health expert who can help: “As a Nutritionist, I usually begin with food. Yet over the years I’ve seen that sleep is just as essential, partly because of the extraordinary link between our gut and our brain. This connection,
The gut communicates with the brain through a constant two-way flow of information most of it travelling from gut to brain and heavily influenced by the health of our gut microbes.
“This pathway helps explain why emotions show up in the gut, think of those familiar “butterflies” for example, and why sleep issues, low mood and digestive discomfort often occur together. These shared symptoms frequently reflect changes in the gut microbiome, particularly when beneficial microbes become less diverse.”
The
Gut–Brain Axis is made up of three main routes:
The Nerve Route
The vagus nerve is our body’s natural calming system - the opposite of “fight or flight”. It contains around 500 million nerve endings throughout the gut, sensing inflammation and chemicals made by our microbes, and relaying this information directly to the brain. Because it slows the heart rate and supports relaxation, simple practices such as breathwork or gentle movement can activate the vagus nerve and help manage stress - one of the biggest disruptors of gut health, and sleep.
The Hormone Route
Our gut health is like our own mini pharmacy. The gut plays a major role in producing key hormones and neurotransmitters. Trillions of good gut microbes in our large intestine produce thousands of vital chemicals called postbiotics. Sleep is among the many natural processes that they impact. For example, our gut microbes make Vitamin B6 and digest a protein building block called Tryptophan found in our food. We need both of these to make Melatonin, our good sleep
Great sources of food that supply these are:
– eat fish and dark leafy greens such as watercress, spinach
- try Tofu, fish, dairy (especially cheese), quinoa & buckwheat and other animal sources of food ie meat & eggs (because these are all ‘complete proteins so they contain all the protein building
blocks we need).
• Calming: Chamomile, Lavender, Oat flower (all perfect in an herbal tea night cap)
• Sour cherries naturally contain melatonin, and some research shows they can improve sleep quality – so how about a sour cherry cocktail rather than an alcoholic one before bedtime!
As well as generating most of our melatonin our microbes also produce about half of our dopamine, linked to comfort and reward and support the production of serotonin, our wellbeing hormone. Conversely, stress prompts the brain to release cortisol, which can inflame the gut and weaken its protective barrier, another reason chronic stress affects sleep and digestion so profoundly.
The Inflammatory Route
Around 70% of the immune system sits within the gut wall. Our microbiome helps regulate this system, keeping inflammation in check throughout the body. When inflammation rises, the vagus nerve detects these signals and sends them to the brain, influencing mood and sleep quality.
Given all these links, it’s unsurprising that conditions such as IBS often come hand-in-hand with disrupted sleep and dips in mood. You might not even be aware of inflammation in your body (we don’t have to be ill to have inflammation going on), but, for example, eating more sugary or high fat foods in a meal causes inflammation afterwards - once in a while it’s fine but it’s easy to see how this could build up.
With World Sleep
Day
upon us, it’s the perfect moment to prioritise habits that strengthen both the gut and the Gut–Brain Axis:
• Enjoy fermented foods little and often: bio live yogurt, kefir and aged cheeses such as Gruyère are excellent options.
• Manage stress daily: short yoga sessions, breathwork or regular moments of self-kindness can all calm the Gut–Brain Axis.
• Eat a rainbow of plants: especially bitter brassicas, rich in antioxidants like watercress that support repair processes during sleep. Mushrooms too are thought to aid sleep; Reishi, Shiitake, and Lion's Mane mushrooms may help by promoting relaxation,
managing stress, and reducing anxiety all of which improve sleep quality.
• Move regularly: exercise nourishes the microbiome and boosts emotional wellbeing.
• Hydrate early in the day: and avoid heavy meals late at night. Aim for a gentle overnight fast of around 12
hours (e.g. 8pm–8am) to give your gut microbes a helpful rest, too. Herbal teas or water in the evening are perfectly fine
• Avoid coffee, chocolate, breakfast tea (contains caffeine), alcohol and sugar for a good night’s sleep. If denying yourself a little bedtime tipple is a problem however, we
know that red wine and cider can nurture gut health because of their antioxidant (polyphenol) content - but only when enjoyed in moderation! And there are some fabulous new alcohol-free drinkswhy not try gut-loving Kombucha, a sparkling fermented tea to reduce your alcohol intake.
Lucy has developed some gut healthy recipes that embrace her advice and so help aid restful sleep
Overnight Oats and Chia Seeds
Soaked with
Roasted Rhubarb
This is really two recipes in one as you can also use the dry mix as a lovely muesli! You might want to buy organic oats to help reduce levels of pesticide residues which can play havoc without gut health. This is a lovely way to enjoy our early rhubarb too with its fibre and antioxidants.
Serves 4 | Use a 1L kilner jar | Oven temperature: 160C
Ingredients:
• 400ml Milk Kefir
• 60g chia seeds
• a pinch of cinnamon (for sweetness)
• Oats and barley flakes (enough to fill 1/3rd of the jar)
• A sprinkle each of: Oat bran, ground flaxseed, raisins, mixed seeds and chopped walnuts
• 1 apple grated (or chop in 2 halves of pear from the tin)
• Honey
• Salt & Pepper
• 2 sticks of British rhubarb
Method:
1.Mix all the dry ingredients together in the kilner jar then add the kefir and grated apple. Give everything a good stir and leave in the fridge overnight. Chia seeds will swell to ten times their size!
2.Chop the rhubarb and lightly roast in the oven with just a little cold pressed rapeseed oil for 10 minutes or until a bright pink colour. Add a drizzle of honey to it once cooked.
Good to Know - Chia seeds are a 'complete' protein - many plant proteins are 'incomplete' ie they don't contain all the essential protein building blocks (amino acids) that we need. They're also rich in fibre, so make for a very filling breakfast bowl with low calorie content.
To Serve - enjoy your soak with a portion of bio live yogurt for extra probiotic goodness and top with the roasted rhubarb. Of course, you can adjust your fruit topper according to what’s in season or use frozen fruit like red currants or raspberries.
I love being able to vary this salad according to what greens are available seasonally and also flexibility on toppings
- goat cheese, nuts and seeds - what’s yours?
Serves 4 | Prep time 5 mins | Cook time 25 mins
Ingredients:
• 1 cup coral whole (coral) lentils
• 1 cup quinoa
• juice of half a lemon
• 2 spring onions finely chopped
• 100g broad beans (or frozen) or 50:50 with frozen peas
• 100g feta cheese, crumbled
• Fresh herbs - mint should be available
• 1 roasted beetroot chopped
• 4 tbsps green pesto
• 4 tbsps extra virgin olive oil
• Salt and Pepper
Method:
1. Cook the coral lentils until tender - about 15-20 minutes simmering either in salted water or use a nice chicken or vegetable stock. (whole lentils hold their shape well).
Drain and set aside to cool. At the same time
2. At the same time cook a batch of quinoa - save time and cook double so you have a batch in the fridge for other recipes. Pop the quinoa in a pan over heat and toast gently shaking it for 2 mins. Add twice the volume of cold water. It will bubble up. Cover and simmer for 10 minutes. Remove from the heat and leave, covered, for a further 10 minutes.
3. Cook the broad beans (and peas) and plunge straight into cold water so they keep their colour.
4. Mix the lentils, beans, chopped herbs, and spring onions together. Add the lemon juice & olive oil and season to taste.
5. Partly mix through the green pesto and drizzle over some extra virgin olive oil.
6. Steam the asparagus (if using) lightly for 8 minutes until tender and serve on the top
7. Stir through crumbled feta, chopped beetroot and add extra mint on the top.

BodyImage
What is body image?
Body image is how we think and feel about our bodies, how we look, and how we believe others see us. A lot of us have some things about how our face or body look that we don’t like. Body confidence is something most of us could do with a bit more of! The way someone talks about their body and feels their body looks might be very different to how it actually looks to you. Body image is not just about a person’s weight, it can also include:
• Comparing how a person looks compared to other people
• Not feeling able to love or accept how they look
• Not seeing people who look like them accepted in the media
• Hiding their body because they feel ashamed of it
• Struggling to find clothes they feel comfortable in
• Feeling misunderstood about their body
• Feeling like they are not attractive
• Worrying about things like birthmarks, scars or acne
• Feeling like their body does not match their true self
Body Dysmorphic Disorder
Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) is a condition in which someone becomes very focused on a part of their appearance they don’t like. It might be their nose, their hair, or the shape of their face. It might be redness that they can see on their skin, or spots. To them the flaw in how they look seems obvious, and they might have ideas that they are ugly or that other people won’t want to spend time with them. It can leave them feeling anxious, down, and alone.
Usually other people don’t see the ‘flaw’ as being nearly as bad as the person with BDD does. You may even struggle to see it at all. Common symptoms of BDD include avoiding mirrors or someone who is checking their appearance in
mirrors very often; trying to hide the part of your appearance that they don’t like with clothes or make up; and comparing how they look to other people. If you think someone you care about might have BDD, encourage them talk to you about it, and to reach out for help from a professional.
Top tips to support someone you care about who is struggling with their body image:
• Compliment your friend/family member for things other than how they look
• Do things together that don’t involve weight loss, comparing how they to someone else, or criticism
• Encourage them to think critically about images of people in the media and on social media; these are often digitally altered to appear perfect
• Let them know you are there for them if they would like to talk about it
• Encourage them to only follow people on social media who make them feel good, and talk about body confidence
• Support them to do things that are kind to their body, like exercising, taking a bath, buying a new piece of clothing in the right size, or using body lotion
• Focus on what it feels like to be healthy, rather than what it looks Encourage healthy food choices, and emphasize the role of food as fuel
If you think that how someone feels about their body is making them feel anxious or low, encourage them to talk to their GP about how they are feeling. They can listen, tell them about local services and support groups, or they may suggest specific treatment for the way they are feeling.

Outstanding Teaching ExcellentResults

in the heart of the North Nottinghamshire countryside, Worksop College and Ranby House offer more than education – they offer belonging.
Surrounded by 400 acres of open land and neighbouring the National Trust’s Clumber Park, our award-winning school provides pupils with the space to grow, the confidence to explore, and the support to thrive.
From the very earliest years at Ranby House (ages 2–11), childhood is cherished. Progress matters more than pressure. There are no SATsdriven expectations here; instead, learning is shaped through Imaginative Learning Projects that transform the National Curriculum into immersive, creative experiences. One pupil may demonstrate understanding through performance, another through coding or design – each journey is individual, and every voice is valued.
The prep school’s facilities are designed to support curious, active learners. Subject-specialist classrooms from an early age, a 300-seat theatre, dedicated music and art spaces, extensive sports pitches, and woodland learning areas ensure pupils move seamlessly between creativity, physical activity, and academic discovery. Wraparound care is available to all families, supporting modern working life while maintaining a strong sense of community.
As pupils move into Worksop College (ages 11–18), this foundation of care
continues. The College is known for both academic and sporting excellence – producing alumni such as England Cricket Captain Joe Root and GB Hockey Captain Adam Dixon. Expert teaching and outstanding facilities support pupils to achieve at the highest level, whether their aspirations lie in leading universities, elite sport, the creative industries or beyond.
Exceptional academic, creative and sporting opportunities sit alongside a deeply embedded commitment to wellbeing. In response to rising national mental health needs, the College has expanded its in-house therapeutic provision, maintaining an average wait time of just 4.4 days from self-referral to professional support. This whole-school approach was recognised nationally when Worksop College was named Independent School of the Year for Pupil Wellbeing. The Willow Wellbeing Hub, a strong House system, and a culture of early intervention ensure pupils are never navigating challenges alone.
Worksop College and Ranby House is a school with ambition and heart –rooted in community, driven by values, and committed to helping every child become the very best version of themselves.
Learning for Life, Not Just for Exams
Many families are looking for an education that offers much more than just strong exam results. Parents recognise that young people also need confidence, adaptability and a broad set of experiences to thrive beyond school in an ever-changing modern world.
Set on the border of Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire, Trent College has taken a balanced approach, combining academic rigour with a strong focus on personal development, for over 150 years.
Located within a 45-acre campus, Trent College and The Elms provide education from Nursery through to Sixth Form, allowing pupils to progress through each stage of their schooling within a familiar, stimulating and supportive environment. While academic standards remain high, the school’s ethos reflects a wider understanding of success.
Education here is seen as a process of helping young people understand their strengths, build resilience and develop the skills needed for a successful future.
Learning is not confined to the classroom. The school makes purposeful use of its grounds, with outdoor learning forming part of
everyday teaching across subjects. Pupils might explore scientific concepts in natural surroundings, apply mathematical thinking in practical contexts or use outdoor spaces to inspire creative work. Children at The Elms enjoy a purpose-built Forest School, a wonderful new playground and specialist outdoor learning areas to encourage curiosity, independence and wellbeing, alongside academic learning.
Beyond lessons, pupils are encouraged to engage with a wide range of cocurricular activities. Sport, drama, music and creative arts all play a visible role in school life, supported by specialist staff and high-quality facilities. Participation is valued not only for achievement, but for what it teaches pupils about teamwork, commitment and self-belief. This broad provision was recognised in a recent ISI inspection, where the co-curricular programme was identified as a rare
and distinguished ‘Significant Strength’ of the school.
Underlying all of this is a strong pastoral culture. Staff place importance on knowing pupils as individuals, ensuring they feel supported and that they develop qualities such as perseverance, empathy and confidence.
In a world where future pathways are rarely straightforward, Trent College offers an education that is both grounded and forward-looking: one that values academic excellence, but understands that character, creativity and experience play an equally important role in shaping capable, thoughtful and successful young adults.
Making the right decision: How to choose a school
We know that choosing a school for your child isn’t just about the facts; it is a very emotional decision, especially that all-important transition from primary to secondary. How is it that your little one is suddenly off to Senior School?! There are so many factors that you need to consider, which can make it feel quite overwhelming.
To help you, here are some questions that you might want to ask at your next Senior school visit:
Subjects - do they offer a broad range, including languages, humanities and the arts alongside core subjects? How many of the subjects can you study at GCSE and A Level? Do they offer specialist awards such as the EPQ? Or are they offering more vocational, specialised qualifications such as BTECs, which better suits some young people?
Teaching - are they long serving, specialists in their field, or do they rely on non specialists and cover? What about class sizes? How do they stretch and challenge brighter children?
Enrichment - what extra opportunities are offered, such as sport, music, drama and volunteering, to inspire and stimulate your child? What about trips outside of the classroom?
Culture - is it rigid with rules or is it more flexible? How much independence and personal responsibility do they get? What about policies around mobile phones, behaviour and uniform standards? This will give you an idea of how well boundaries are put in place.
Pastoral care - what is in place to support and protect your child’s wellbeing? How do they facilitate the transition from Year 6? What specialist support is in place for children with additional learning needs? How is culture and community built?
You will be able to tell a lot about a school by visiting during the school day, so try and book a tour during term time. Purely attending an Open Evening will only ever give you one version of the school. Experiencing it during the day when the students and teachers are in their usual environment will give you a better understanding of the culture.
Choosing a school is one of the hardest decisions a parent can face. Asking the right questions will help you look beyond the prospectus and better understand the culture and ethos that will shape your child’s experience and set them up for life.

Loved ones and friends are proving supportive even though they are heavily burdened with their own emotional pressures. A new friendship is slowly gathering momentum and is instrumental in lifting your mood and spirits resulting in you feeling more confident in how you address the next phase of your life. It’s time to let go of the past and embrace the future as its going to be much better than you could possibly imagine, now that trends are changing and you are more in control of your destiny.
aries
It’s been a difficult year so far and you are right to question just where your life is going and what to expect in the future. You are in a much stronger bargaining position than previously and must guard against giving all your power away to the wrong people. Whatever you focus on, you will attract, good or bad so be careful for what you wish, because you may get it. A promotion or pay rise at work will put a smile on your face as you finally receive the appreciation and recognition for your efforts and loyalty.

It's always mindful to be aware that not everyone is as organised as you, nor do they have the capacity to sort themselves out. It will come as no surprise when someone shows up with the intention of crying on your shoulders regarding the state of their life. Perhaps they are hoping that you cough up the cash and bail them out? ‘Never a borrower nor lender be, because there is no surer way of injuring a friendship. A house move looks likely for varying reasons.
It was extremely necessary for you to do some soul searching and being absolutely honest with yourself on several important levels of consciousness. Although you enjoy the company of friends, it is also very important that you enjoy some private time alone to think deeply and reflect upon your life. You are starting to see certain people in their true light, and feel underwhelmed with their behaviour and attitude, making this the right time for you to move forwards and create a better life for yourself without them.
Concentrate on finding new ways of improving your future financial situation because you are going to experience a complete change of direction in both your personal and professional circumstances. If you are feeling restless and unsettled at work, now is the time to look at other career options or starting your own business. There is nothing stopping you from making a complete success of yourself except your own self-doubts, focus your energies on reaching your goals.

A new romance will set your heart racing as finally you meet someone who is on your wavelength and who is showing their reliable dependable worthiness. A sensational discovery about the truth of someone’s character confirms that you were right all along in your assessment of them. Job opportunities or the sale and purchases of property will all interest you, especially if it proves profitable in the long term. Book a much-deserved holiday and give yourself something to work towards and enjoy.
Information concerning someone you have been highly suspicious of may leave others feeling flabbergasted, but no surprise to you. Whilst ever you listen and go with your gut feelings, everything will work out favourably. Don’t allow yourself to be dissuaded by someone who is unreliable and somewhat flighty. Finances look all set to increase, putting you in an excellent bartering and bargaining position. Rather than involve yourself with crowds of people, mainly strangers, stand back and observe, because that way you will see more.
A confidential meeting could result in a new long term commitment which invites prosperity. You are right in keeping personal details to yourself at this stage because the last thing you need is classified information leaking to the wrong quarters. Not everyone shares your work ethics and do everything possible to avoid confrontation for fear of being found out. Because of all the recent pressure put on your shoulders either at work or domestically, its little wonder you are feeling run down and fatigued, so do the only sensible thing and book some much deserved time out.
You are right to be especially select with whom you associate with. Very quickly you can very easily detect who is genuine and who is not. You are rarely wrong on matters such as these, much to the annoyance of certain people who are unable to hoodwink you easily. An old flame or past friend may suddenly reappear and expect you to forgive and forget, even though they may have hurt you deeply in the past. Be warned, leopards do not change their spots.
gemini
Never presume, assume, or jump to conclusions too quickly. You can never judge a book by its cover so its no great surprise that you may still be wondering why certain people are behaving so strangely. Perhaps they have secrets they would rather not share because they are riddled with guilt? In turn, it’s a good idea that you keep your secrets safe by choosing wisely who to confide in. You may find yourself having to choose between more than one admirer. A last-minute holiday arrangement strongly indicates that will be visiting pastures new and once again.
Entertain only those who contribute to your life and not those that drain both your energies and wallet. You are about to sever several links to people who have stood in your way and held you as their emotional hostage. Your decisions may not be received well, but they will release you from feeling restricted. Now that you are determined to live your life differently to before, you will meet and make new friends who become important in your future.
Perhaps you should learn to recognise your limitations and say ‘no’ occasionally to people who tend to take you for granted and assume that you are at their disposal. Communication will put your mind at rest once you know exactly what is happening and where you stand in the equation. Legal documents may also need your attention, soon so be sure that you know what you are signing, and all the implications involved. An invitation to attend a dinner party introduces you to someone you find incredibly interesting and charismatic.

Marbella has a way of seducing you slowly, then all at once. One moment you’re wandering through whitewashed alleyways scented with orange blossom; the next, you’re sipping something cold and extravagant beside a superyacht.
Marvellous
Marbella
This storied corner of Spain’s Costa del Sol has mastered the art of duality, balancing deep-rooted Andalusian tradition with an unapologetic taste for luxury.
At its heart lies Casco Antiguo, Marbella’s old town, where time seems to move at a gentler pace. Narrow cobbled streets twist and turn past flower-draped balconies, artisan boutiques, and tiny cafés where locals linger over cortados. The focal point is Plaza de los Naranjos, a sunlit square planted with orange trees and framed by historic buildings dating back to the 16th century. Here, the rhythm of Marbella feels intimate and authentic, a reminder that long before the champagne and designer labels, this was a humble fishing town.
Yet Marbella is equally defined by its flair for the glamorous. Just a few minutes away, Puerto Banús gleams with polished marble, luxury cars, and some of the most impressive yachts in the Mediterranean. Once a playground for European aristocracy in the 1970s, it has evolved into a global hotspot where fashion houses, celebrity chefs, and nightlife heavyweights compete for attention. At sunset, the marina becomes a stage: heels click, glasses clink, and the air hums with possibility.
The coastline itself is one of Marbella’s greatest assets. Stretching for more than 25 kilometers, its beaches range from lively and social to quietly refined. Beach clubs are a serious business here, blurring the line between day and night. Think plush loungers, DJ soundtracks, and seafood so fresh it practically introduces itself. Whether you’re dancing barefoot at a bohemian chiringuito or reclining beneath crisp white umbrellas, the
Mediterranean is always the star of the show.
Food in Marbella reflects its international character while staying grounded in Andalusian flavors. Traditional dishes like espeto de sardinas—skewered sardines grilled over open flames—share menus with refined tasting courses and global fusion cuisine. The surrounding hills provide olive oil, citrus, and avocados, while nearby Ronda contributes robust wines. It’s a place where fine dining and rustic simplicity coexist effortlessly.
Beyond the beach, Marbella offers surprising depth. Golf courses roll through the hills like green ribbons, earning the area its nickname, Costa del Golf. Nature lovers can escape to the Sierra Blanca mountains, where hiking trails reveal panoramic views of the coast and, on clear days, the outline of Africa across the sea. Art galleries, wellness retreats, and cultural festivals add layers to a destination often underestimated for its substance.
Marbella’s true magic lies in its versatility. It can be indulgent or understated, energetic or serene, depending on how you choose to experience it. Whether you arrive for the sun, the style, or the slower pleasures of southern Spain, Marbella has an uncanny ability to meet you where you are—and tempt you to stay a little longer.

Where Style, Substance & Espresso Collide
Spend a weekend here and the city reveals its appeal slowly, through rhythm, ritual, and a deep appreciation for the good things done well.
Friday evening begins the only way it should: with aperitivo. Drop your bags and head straight to Brera, where cobbled streets glow under soft lights and locals gather with instinctive precision. Order a Negroni Sbagliato, Milan’s signature aperitif, and small plates begin to appear—olives, focaccia, something perfectly fried. This pre-dinner ritual isn’t rushed or performative; it’s a moment to pause, observe, and ease into the city’s tempo. Dinner comes late, unfussy, and deeply satisfying: saffron-hued risotto alla Milanese, rich and comforting, or classic osso buco that barely clings to the bone.
Saturday morning is for grandeur. The Duomo di Milano dominates the cityscape, its white marble façade bristling with spires and statues. Step inside, then climb to the rooftop terraces, where Milan stretches out below in neat lines and elegant
proportions. From there, wander into the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, a 19thcentury masterpiece of iron and glass that still feels like the city’s living room. Espresso is taken standing at the bar—fast, sharp, and non-negotiable.
The afternoon is reserved for culture. Book ahead to see Leonardo da Vinci’s Last Supper, an experience that feels hushed and almost ceremonial, or explore the museums and courtyards of Castello Sforzesco. For a modern counterpoint, Fondazione Prada delivers contemporary art within striking architecture, embodying Milan’s constant dialogue between heritage and innovation. Later, slow the pace in Navigli, the canal district where vintage shops, galleries, and waterside cafés invite wandering and lingering lunches.
Saturday night proves Milan’s style is about restraint, not excess. Choose a modern Italian restaurant, follow it with a lively bar, and finish with gelato—season irrelevant.
Sunday arrives gently. In Parco Sempione, joggers, families, and dogs reclaim the city as Milan briefly exhales. One last espresso, one final glance at impeccably dressed strangers, and it becomes clear: Milan doesn’t try to impress. It already knows who it is—and that self-assurance is exactly what makes it unforgettable.
Milan doesn’t flirt. It doesn’t sweep you off your feet with obvious beauty or postcard romance. Instead, it stands back, immaculately dressed, quietly confident—and lets you come to it

2026 FlooringTrends
This year, wood flooring takes centre stage, bringing together creativity, lightness and character, helping homes feel both considered and comfortably lived in.
Flooring plays a key role in setting the tone for how a room looks, feels and flows, providing you with the perfect setting to express your own interior style, from the ground up.
Here, Natalie Mudd, Creative Director and Co-Founder of Knot & Grain, shares her thoughts on the wood flooring trends shaping interiors in 2026.
Natalie Mudd
geometric wood flooring shines -offering an artistic, designer touch in a simple yet effective way that doesn't cost the earth.
To add further interest, consider layering flooring patterns, combining herringbone or chevron flooring with the simplicity of straight planks, which adds depth, while naturally creating zones within an open plan space.”
Embrace Geometric Patterns
“Geometric wood flooring designs are set to become a favourite trend this year, with charming herringbone and chevron leading the way. With a repeating pattern, these beautiful flooring styles add structure and rhythm to any space, transforming wood flooring from just a simple backdrop into a focal point.
Inspired by classic European style but given a modern twist, herringbone and chevron floors fit perfectly in both contemporary and period homes. Homeowners are looking for designs that go beyond fleeting trends. This is where
Keep it Light and Airy
“Light and airy wood tones are set to make a return. Shades of honeyed oak, washed driftwood, and other light, warm woods are becoming increasingly sought after for their ability to brighten spaces, while maintaining a natural, grounded feel.
Light, warm-toned wood flooring enhances natural light and creates a sense of calm and openness, offering a neutral yet characterful base. Straight laid and wide plank flooring complements this look further while allowing the wood grain and natural character to truly shine through. This reflects the growing interior trend of homeowners choosing materials that feel authentic and connected to nature."
Character Rich Flooring
"The character-rich ‘lived-in’ aesthetic
is here to stay - think texture, contrast and layering in abundanceflooring is the ideal place to start. Lean into imperfection with rustic planks that celebrate rich grains, charming knots and natural colour variations, adding an authentic and earthy feel.
These organic details create a foundation that makes spaces feel warm, relaxed, and lived in rather than overly polished. When paired with natural finishes and tactile furnishings, textured wood flooring enhances the sense of comfort and individuality, providing the ideal base for life's comings and goings."

Extended Living
Garden sheds step up as homes look for space without extending. Insight from The Posh Shed Company reveals homeowners are demanding more from the humble garden shed.
According to insight from The Posh Shed Company, homeowners are no longer buying sheds as basic, seasonal storage, but are specifying them to perform more like permanent, everyday household spaces - with insulation, glazing and security now treated as essentials rather than upgrades.
Rather than focusing on what is stored inside, the shift is in how sheds are designed and built, as homeowners look to relieve pressure on kitchens, garages and utility rooms without extending their homes.
Jenny Davis, Head of Marketing at The Posh Shed Company, said: “The biggest change we’re seeing isn’t what people put in their shed, it’s what they expect the shed itself to do. Customers want dry, secure, usable space all year round, not a cold box at the bottom of the garden.”
Historically, sheds were designed as basic outbuildings, suitable only for weather-resistant items. But rising expectations around build quality mean today’s buyers are looking for features more commonly associated with internal rooms - including insulation, double glazing, secure locking and proper flooring.
“As homes work harder than ever, people are looking beyond their four walls for practical solutions,” Jenny added. “A well-built shed can now play a similar role to a utility room - freeing up space indoors without the cost or disruption of a renovation.”
All sheds from The Posh Shed Company are built with insulated flooring and double glazing as standard, ensuring they remain dry, secure and usable throughout the year. Higher-spec models also include insulated walls and roofs, internal cladding, guttering and integrated storage - features that reflect the way sheds are now expected to function as part of the home, rather than separate from it.
The Posh Shed Company offers seven handcrafted models, built to order and available in seven curated exterior colours, allowing sheds to sit comfortably alongside modern homes while delivering practical, everyday functionality.
Prices start from £4,999 and sheds can be ordered online from www.theposhshedcompany.co.uk
The Chelsea Shed £4,999
The Botanic Shed £10,999

Making More Room
Converting your loft is a practical and rewarding way to create more space in your house. Whether you need an extra bedroom, a home office, a playroom, or simply more storage, a loft conversion can meet your needs while adding value to your property. Here are some steps and considerations to help you make the most of your loft conversion.
Assess Feasibility
Before you start, assess the feasibility of a loft conversion. Check the height, pitch, and structure of your roof. Ideally, you need a minimum head height of 2.2 meters to ensure the space is usable. Consult with a structural engineer to evaluate whether your roof structure can support the conversion.
Plan Your Space
Decide how you want to use the space. This will determine the design and layout. For a bedroom, you'll need space for a bed and storage. For an office, consider desk space and shelving. Sketch out a rough floor plan to visualize the space.
Structural Considerations
Reinforce the floor if necessary. Loft floors may need strengthening to support additional weight. Install appropriate insulation to make the space comfortable year-round. Proper insulation also helps in soundproofing and energy efficiency.
Lighting and Ventilation
Maximize natural light by installing skylights or dormer windows. These also provide ventilation, which is crucial for maintaining air quality. Plan for artificial lighting with a mix of ambient, task, and accent lights to create a welcoming atmosphere.
Access
Ensure safe and practical access to your loft. A staircase is the best option, but it needs to be carefully designed to fit within the existing structure. Spiral staircases or compact designs can save space.
Utilities
Consider the placement of utilities like heating, electricity, and plumbing. You may need to extend existing systems or install new ones. This is crucial if you're adding a bathroom or kitchenette.
Finishing Touches
Choose finishes and furnishings that complement the rest of your home. Use light colours to make the space feel larger and more open. Built-in storage solutions can maximize space and keep the area clutterfree.
Budget
Set a realistic budget and include a contingency for unexpected expenses. Loft conversions can be cost-effective compared to building extensions, but costs can vary depending on the complexity of the project.
Professional Help
Hiring professionals like architects, builders, and interior designers can ensure your loft conversion is done to a high standard. They can provide valuable advice and manage the project efficiently.
By converting your loft, you can effectively increase the living space in your home, making it more functional and enjoyable. Whether you're accommodating a growing family or creating a personal retreat, a loft conversion is a worthwhile investment.
Smart Tech for Happier Houseplants
As we start thinking about refreshing our homes for spring, houseplants take centre stage, not just for their beauty, but for the way they improve air quality, boost wellbeing, and bring life into our living spaces. But keeping plants healthy, especially through the darker winter months, isn’t always easy.
That’s where Plant With Willow comes in. The new smart plant-care system is transforming the way we look after indoor greenery, helping every plant stay healthy, vibrant, and ready to flourish as the seasons change.
By combining intelligent sensors with a clever companion app, Willow gives your plants a “voice”, translating real-time data into simple, easy-to-follow insights. Whether a plant is thirsty, not getting enough light, or needs a nutritional boost, Willow lets you know exactly what to do, no guesswork required.
At the heart of the system is a Sensor that sits in your plant’s soil. Every few minutes, it measures the things that matter most to plant health: moisture, light, temperature, humidity and nutrient levels. This means you can see what’s really happening beneath the surface and give your plants precisely what they need to grow strong and resilient.
Through the Willow app, you’ll receive gentle alerts when it’s time to water, along with post-watering feedback to help you get it just right. The app also guides you on feeding and nutrient balance, helping prevent common problems like over- or under-fertilising, a key factor in keeping plants lush
and leafy all year round. Light levels are measured every minute, so you’ll know if a plant needs to be moved closer to a window to make the most of limited winter daylight, or if it’s getting too much as spring approaches. Temperature and humidity tracking ensure your plants stay comfortable, even when heating is on, and indoor air becomes dry.
Each plant is given a simple ‘happiness score’, offering a quick snapshot of overall health at a glance, perfect for anyone growing anything from a single windowsill succulent to a full indoor jungle. Whether you’re refreshing your home for the new year, improving indoor air quality, or getting ready for a greener spring, the Willow Starter Pack is ideal for plant lovers of every level.
With Plant With Willow, your plants can finally tell you exactly what they need, and you can enjoy a healthier, greener home all year round. The Willow Starter Pack includes one Sensor and one Hub, which connects to the app and can support up to 40 Sensors, allowing your plant-care system to grow alongside
INTERIOR TRENDS 2026
As we look ahead to 2026, our homes continue to evolve into spaces that reflect both calm and character. Comfort is key, but so is creativity - interiors are becoming softer, more personal and more flexible than ever before.
Rikke Blaeside, Design and Range Manager JYSK, reveals five key trends set to shape interior design in 2026.
CLEAN LINES, CALM SPACES
We expect minimalism to remain a strong anchor for 2026: uncluttered surfaces, serene palettes and carefully chosen accents. Interiors that breathe allow quality lighting and design details to truly shine. With the traditional ‘spring clean’ now a year-round mindset, minimalist interiors are increasingly about more than style - they’re about simplifying daily life. This trend celebrates spaces that feel lighter, calmer and easier to live in, proving that a considered home is the ultimate form of everyday luxury. We expect this look to take centre stage throughout the coming year.
COLOUR THAT SPEAKS NOT SHOUTS
“In 2026 colour makes its comeback but with a whisper instead of a shout.
Colour this year is refined rather than loud: considered, confident and seamlessly tied into the overall palette. These subtle pops of tone allow personality to shine through without overwhelming a space, creating interiors that feel both expressive and timeless - designed to evolve beautifully for years to come. A bold rug,
a coloured plant pot or a vibrant accessory is often all it takes.
This shift towards gentler expression is echoed by Pantone’s Colour of the Year, ‘Cloud Dancer’ - a soft, weightless white that acts as a grounding presence. Cloud Dancer encourages a more nuanced approach to colour: layering quiet shades, playing with delicate contrasts and letting texture and materials do the talking. It offers a calm canvas that offers interiors a sense of ease and clarity.
MIX AND MATCH
It’s clear that wooden shades have become a true home essential, and they are here to stay. Traditionally, many have chosen to match their wooden tones throughout the home, from shelving and furniture to lamps and accessories, creating a cooridinated look.
However, in 2026, its time to mix and match for a refreshed look and feel. Instead of sticking to one tone throughout, we expect to see mixing
ELMA Duvet Cover Set (sand) double, £37.50 and SHEILA Duvet Cover Set double (blue) £32.50
NSF Pedestal LYDUM table (chrome) £89.99
of different finishes to bring warmth and character to spaces. Pairing light oak with rich walnut, or combining bamboo textures with natural ash, creates a beautifully layered, lived-in look - a fresh twist on the much-loved Scandinavian style. A simple way to embrace this trend is by layering wood accents throughout your space.
FLEXIBLE LIVING
In 2026, flexibility will be a driving force in interior design. As our homes continue to serve multiple purposes, from workspace to retreat, adaptable furniture and portable lighting are becoming essential. The focus is on creating spaces that work harder and move with us, rather than holding us in place.
Leading this shift are cordless battery lamps, which perfectly capture the spirit of flexible living. No longer tied to sockets or fixed positions, they make it easier than ever to create atmosphere wherever it is needed. Whether it is soft light in a reading corner, a warm glow
on a dining table or gentle lighting on the balcony, battery lamps bring both practicality and comfort into modern living.
CHROME O’CLOCK
Chrome accents are making a stylish comeback in our homes. Sleek, shiny and effortlessly modern, chrome is the perfect way to add a touch of sophistication without feeling over the top. It’s cool, reflective finish pairs beautifully with warm woods, soft fabrics and natural textures, creating rooms that feel fresh, balanced and inviting. This growing love for chrome represents the desire to mix timeless style with modern comfort. Whether it’s a subtle detail or a bold statement piece, chrome brings light and energy into any space. This renewed focus on chrome also reflects in the modern Art Deco trend, where classic geometric lines are being updated with reflective detailing, to bring subtle glamour and a clean, contemporary shine to any space.

Improving Your Driveway
Upgrading your home’s exterior with a professionally laid tarmac driveway and installing drop kerbs is a smart investment that improves both appearance and practicality
A well-constructed driveway not only enhances kerb appeal but also adds value to your property and provides a durable, lowmaintenance parking solution. Professional Tarmac InstallationDriveway
Tarmac (also known as asphalt) is one of the most popular driveway surfaces in the UK due to its strength, smooth finish, and cost-effectiveness. When installed professionally, the process typically includes:
• Excavating the existing surface
• Installing a solid subbase for stability
• Applying and compacting hot tarmac
• Finishing with neat edges or block borders
A professional contractor ensures correct drainage, proper depth, and long-lasting results. Tarmac driveways are weather-resistant, quick to install, and can last 15–20 years with minimal maintenance. They are
ideal for households with multiple vehicles due to their load-bearing strength.
Installing Drop Kerbs
If you plan to drive across a pavement onto your driveway, installing a drop kerb is essential. A drop kerb (lowered kerb) provides safe and legal vehicle access from the road to your property. In most areas, permission from your local council is required before work begins. Professional installers will:
• Remove existing kerbstones
• Lower the pavement safely
• Reinforce the area to handle vehicle weight
• Ensure compliance with local regulations
Having a legally approved drop kerb prevents potential fines and damage to the pavement. Combined with a professionally laid tarmac driveway, it creates a practical, safe, and attractive entrance to your home.
Whether you add an extra bedroom, walk-in wardrobe or a playroom for the kids a loft conversion provides you with more space whilst adding value to your home.
Upgrading your home with a loft conversion means you have access to extra storage space whilst creating another room to be utilised as a master bedroom, for guests to stay or as a family hub such as a home cinema or games room – the possibilities are endless.
Adding flair to your property with natural light and stunning high views, a loft conversion can unlock a whole new perspective on your surroundings.
This extra space means that you do not have to move to upgrade your space; you can simply expand upwards saving you lots of money and effort, as most loft conversions do not require planning permission.
From a home office to a relaxation space, create a cosy retreat in the confines of your own home and discover endless options to upgrade your space. And the good news is that a loft conversion can increase the value of your home by up to 20%.
Garden Furniture Trends for 2026
A new year brings a fresh start along with the promise of brighter days ahead. With the days getting longer, now is the perfect time to start thinking about the warmer months and how you plan to use your outdoor space. Whether you’re dreaming of a whimsical dining area surrounded by flowers or a more intimate lounge setting for relaxing with a coffee, Alex Bridgman, CEO of luxury garden furniture brand, Bridgman shares his thoughts on the garden furniture trends for the year ahead.
Dining Among the Flowers: “Homeowners are moving away from the immaculately landscaped garden designs, instead embracing a more organic approach to planting. They’re embracing wildflowerstyle borders, plants of varying heights and textures, and a sense that the garden is natural, rather than overly maintained or curated.
This more rustic aesthetic lends itself perfectly to outdoor dining. Whether you have a large or small garden, positioning an outdoor dining set among the flowers will instantly create a more intimate and immersive experience, suitable for both casual family dinners or entertaining friends. To dial up the cosiness and enhance the softer, more relaxed feel opt for a set made with materials such as rattan or rope and select designs with supportive seat or back cushions for ample comfort.”
Sun-Lounging in Style: “Sun loungers have undergone a quiet transformation in recent years. What once was more practical, has now evolved into something luxurious, taking its inspiration from the cabanas and day beds from sunshine holidays abroad.
In 2026, lounging is about recreating that holiday feeling from home. With generouslyproportioned designs and plush cushions that encourage long, lazy afternoons in the sun spent reading, sunbathing or simply just switching off. Whether positioned poolside or beneath a canopy or parasol, these pieces create a sense of escape without needing to leave home.”
Conversation Spaces: “Outdoor seating is becoming less about practicality and more about comfort and connection. Homeowners are prioritising more intimate arrangements that bring the living room into the great outdoors, combining sofas, coffee tables and armchairs to encourage conversation and relaxation.
Soft, tactile elements, such as outdoor rugs and cushions help to make these spaces feel inviting and lived-in, while thoughtful layouts ensure the area feels cosy without being cramped. Natural materials and warm textures such as rope add a sense of comfort, while practical touches like waterproof cushions and rust-resistant frames mean these pieces are as functional as they are stylish.”

Hollygate Memorial woodlands
A.M. Buckingham Independent Family Funeral Services began in Cotgrave in 2008 when owner Tony Buckingham established Cotgrave & District Funeral Services.
Since then, we have enjoyed a growing reputation for excellent service and competitive pricing. To enhance our service capacity we have opened branches in Clifton, Carlton and now Bingham, to allow us to serve the wider Nottinghamshire and surrounding areas. We can arrange all aspects of a funeral and offers each type of service from direct cremation to bespoke funeral services. Each branch is staffed by empathetic and understanding people who will listen to your requirements and help with every aspect of the funeral arrangements. Each branch has a private arranging room and chapel of rest. We can also offer a dark blue hearse and two matching 7 seat limousines, allowing family members to travel together to the funeral service. Our staff are always on hand to help and advice with all your funeral arrangements.
There is an active management scheme in place to help with the establishment of the trees. The company are actively planting more species such as pollen rich plants in the open ride areas to enhance insect life to further encourage all types of bird. Some areas will be left more natural to further help the insects and small animals.
We solely manage and maintain Hollygate memorial woodlands, situated on Hollygate Lane to the north east of Cotgrave. The woods were planted in 2011 as a conservation woodland to promote the conservation and reintroduction of birds into this area by planting a variety of native broadleaved species. The planting is naturalistic with open unplanted rides giving access to the 5 separate woods and spinnies.
There is a water source at the bottom of the woods, the Grantham canal, which has a large population of amphibious creatures and water based insects to further enhance the wildlife populations. We offer you the opportunity to choose a specific tree and have it as your own growing memorial to the departed loved one. The woods are private but by leasing a tree you also have the right to enter any time and walk or sit in the quiet of the woodlands.
There are many species of trees and shrubs that you can choose as a living memorial for your loved one, including mighty Oaks, flowering Cherry, Ash, Willow, Silver Birch and fruiting Hawthorne or festive Holly. Alternatively, you can choose a family plot where up to 6 cremated remains can be
interred around a single tree. We also have supplies of native woodland plants, sourced from sustainable sites, that can be planted around the memorial sites. Alternatively, we do offer full burial plots if cremation is not an option for you. We can supply coffins, caskets, urns and pouches made from natural and biodegradable materials for the interment of remains, to ensure the woodlands continue to develop into a natural environment.
Please feel free to contact any of our offices below for more information.

Could you be a foster carer?
As part of Foster for East Midlands Councils we are committed to helping children and young people finding safe, loving and stable homes locally. That is where you come in. Could you open your heart and your home to a child in need?
What is fostering?
When a child cannot live at home or with family they can become cared for by the local authority. Foster carers provides stability, safety and a nurturing environment when this happens. Foster carers give children space and support to flourish and share their lives with the children they welcome into their homes.
a positive and trusting relationship with
By providing a child with a positive adult role mode, you’ll help ensure that they experience affection, support and strong family experiences that can help them on their way to becoming a confident young person.
• provide/support a healthy diet and lifestyle
• drop off and pick up children from school
• communicate with nursery, school and other educational organisations to support learning
• provide the opportunity for children to experience a positive family life
• spend leisure time together, ensure children have the opportunity to play, relax and have fun
• support children with appointments and activities
Foster carers play an important part in helping children maintain relationships with those who are important to them, to hopefully help children return to their family where possible. All of our foster carers are supported by a team of professionals from social services, education and health care.
What is the role of a foster carer?
Fostering is a rewarding and challenging role to be proud of, with the chance for foster carers to make a real difference to a child or young person's life.
Foster carers offer security, safety and stability at times of confusion and worry for children.
You’ll experience pride and joy as you watch a child grow and develop into their own person. As a foster carer you have a unique opportunity to support a child through a particularly vulnerable time and help them overcome challenges.
You will provide consistency for a child and be someone the child can form
By combining your own life experience with the training and support we offer, you'll feel confident making decisions around a child’s day to day care and be able to help them develop into a confident, well-rounded young person.
Fostering involves working closely with others involved in the welfare of the children you are caring for. Foster carers work closely as a team, not only with professionals but also in supporting each other.
What does a foster carer do day-to-day?
Being a nurturing caregiver and building trusting relationships are fundamentals of the role.
Foster carers care for children in their home and carry out the day-today activities to meet their needs. Fostering is different to parenting your own child, and through our training and support we’ll help you understand how to meet the needs of a child in foster care.
On a daily basis, foster carers:
• provide love, stability and safe relationships
• foster carers are also role models for those they look after, offering help, love and patience to children who often need time to trust
It doesn’t matter your background, your age, whether you own a home or rent, are male or female, single or married. To find out more about fostering come along to one of our in-person information events or take a look at the website to see how you can get in touch.

Bereavement can leave people feeling sad, lost, and sometimes confused, but an appropriate funeral and memorial can bring great comfort and peace. At the Willows Natural Burial Ground, the tranquil surroundings of wildflower meadows, woodland, and ponds can provide great solace for those left behind as they remember the person or people they have lost.
The Willows is a 10-acre family-owned natural burial site near South Croxton, with commanding views of the Charnwood countryside, where people can be buried in hand dug graves in eco-friendly coffins or caskets, made of biodegradable materials such as cardboard, willow, wool or banana leaf to name a few. Conversely, their ashes can be buried or subsurface scattered, either in bio-degradable urns or simply poured into or onto the ground.
A range of commemorative memorials are available, made of natural materials such as Welsh slate, and wood, while many people choose to remember their loved ones by planting a tree or native rose bush.
Owners Chris and Jenny Scroby and their family, have been transforming the bare fields with extensive tree and bulb planting since opening in 2011, inviting families of the
buried or pre-purchased plots, to join in at planting weekends. They recently purchased another 3,750 native British bluebell, snowdrop and daffodil bulbs, whilst simultaneously raising money for local charities.
The Willows caters for people of all faiths or no faith. The site can accommodate graveside funerals or act solely as a burial site after a service elsewhere. If families do have a service on site, their fee includes provision of a small pop-up shelter, with limited seating and soft drinks for those attending.
The natural burial option is a cost-effective alternative to a traditional cemetery burial or cremation. Chris and Jenny work with the family’s chosen funeral directors to ensure everything goes smoothly, whilst respecting the parameters set out to protect and promote the site as a natural, wildlife friendly environment.
Chris says: “We’re very pleased with our progress, which we see as our contribution in giving something back to nature and the environment.”
Complementary Therapy Support
Treetops Hospice has announced a significant new research partnership with Nottingham Trent University (NTU) to examine how complementary therapies can benefit children and adolescents coping with bereavement. Treetops, based in Risley, provides counselling and complementary therapy services for children and adults, and has seen encouraging anecdotal evidence of the positive impact these interventions can have.
All complementary therapy sessions for young people take place in The Saplings, the hospice’s bespoke children’s centre. The building was created as part of the BBC’s DIY SOS Big Build for Children in Need, which was filmed at the hospice just over two years ago.
The new study will gather insights directly from service users and explore how therapies such as aromatherapy, reflexology, Reiki and Indian head massage can help improve sleep quality and reduce anxiety in young people experiencing grief.
The research collaboration was initiated by Dr Mike Vernon, Senior Lecturer in Psychology at NTU, and Paulo Karat, psychotherapist and academic at
Nottingham Law School, part of NTU, following Paulo’s therapy training placement at Treetops.
Paulo said: “Having completed a placement at Treetops, I came away with huge respect and admiration for what the charity does and what it stands for. As academics, Mike and I wanted to find a way for NTU and Treetops to work together. Fortunately, they had the same appetite to work on a collaborative study.”
impact in a more scientific way and gather meaningful evidence about the benefits we witness in our therapy rooms. Working with Nottingham Trent University will help us show the true value of complementary therapy and continue developing the support we offer to bereaved children and teenagers.”
As a qualitative part of the research, NTU will also explore the experiences of Treetops’ talking therapists, inviting counsellors to reflect on how complementary therapies shape the emotional engagement, wellbeing and progress of the bereaved children and teenagers they support.
Alex Silvester, Senior Complementary Therapist at Treetops Hospice, said: “We see every day how complementary therapies can make a real difference for children and young people – helping them relax, easing anxiety, improving sleep and giving them a safe space to process their emotions. This research gives us the chance to understand that

MentalHealth
This Children’s Mental Health Week, NottAlone have launched a series three of The NottAlone Podcast with a focus on youth voices.
In the spotlight for the first episode, which is released on Wednesday 11 February, is fifteen-year-old Ella Mai Blower from Colwick who shares her moving experience of coping with grief following the loss of her younger brother. Leo was six years old when he passed away from a terminal brain tumour four years ago, leaving Ella and her family devastated.
As many young people do, Ella turned to social media to find other people who had also lost siblings, but was unable to find anything that resonated with her. That’s when she decided to create her own TikTok account @girl_vs_grief, to share her memories and help other people going through grief and loss.
Ella said: “The world goes quiet when you lose someone that close. It felt like time was paused, I felt numb. I just missed everything about him. Then the things that I felt were the biggest problem as an eleven-year-old weren’t anymore. Nothing mattered. The only thing that mattered was Leo.”
Ella had therapy after the loss and encourages anyone going through something difficult to reach out for support: “If you do therapy, you have someone to talk to, someone who’s there to listen to you. Especially if you don’t want to talk to your family and friends about something, you can talk to your therapist, because they’re not going to judge you. I really recommend it for anyone struggling.”
Reflecting on the loss during the podcast episode, Ella talks about the things that helped her: “It is important to find your own thing that helps you. It is important for your mental health. For example, I don’t know where I’d be if I didn’t have drama. It has driven me and made me, me. Finding your own ‘thing’ helps so much when you’re feeling low, because
you can think ‘right, everything’s falling apart, but I’ve got drama’ or whatever your own thing is. And then you realise not everything’s bad because you’ve got that good thing in your life.
“It does feel so unfair. But you can either sit there thinking that it’s unfair, or you can do something and learn how to make it feel less painful. Therapy helped. Talking to my family really helped, they’ve lost Leo too and they know what it’s like. We do things to remember him, and we have a bench for him that I go and sit on sometimes. I’ve got so many amazing memories of him; so I’ve still got Leo.”
Ella also speaks about what people can do to support loved ones going through loss: “The main thing I needed was a friend. It was very hard to feel understood, but what made a difference was my friends who contacted me, sent a little text, just to say, ‘I’m here’ or ‘I’m thinking of you, I really hope you’re okay’. You don’t have to do anything, you just have to be there. It’s a massive thing.”
Co-hosts of The NottAlone Podcast, Dr Orlaith Green and Dr Maddi Popoola are eager for people to listen to the new series. Dr Maddi, NottAlone co-founder and Educational Psychologist, said: “I’m absolutely in awe of the young people we’ve had on the podcast for the new series. Their stories are so different but the one thing that carries through each episode is how articulate, courageous and open each of these young people has been when talking about their individual struggles.”
Dr Orlaith, NottAlone co-founder and Principal Educational Psychologist and Group Manager, Psychology and Inclusion Services at Nottinghamshire County Council, said: “These young people are so inspiring. They’re able to come and talk to us about real issues and pain that they’ve been through in a really emotionally mature way. We were just blown away by them and are so grateful they agreed to open up and be vulnerable with us. I think our listeners will agree that these are some of our most powerful episodes yet.”
Listen to Ella’s episode of The NottAlone Podcast now at nottalone.org.uk/thenottalone-podcast, the first episode in a new four-episode podcast series which explores some challenging topics, hearing young people’s first-hand experiences of grief, loss, eating disorder recovery and overcoming anxiety and panic attacks.
