Future Secured For Iconic Dancehall
One of Nottingham’s best loved venues with a history stretching back almost 100 years is set to open its doors once again this September.
The 2,500-capacity venue, most recently known as Pryzm, will be returning to its original incarnation of “The Palais” ahead of celebrating its 100th year in 2025.
Plans are already underway by new owners DHP Family for a rejuvenation of the iconic space on Lower Parliament Street, with a new stage, PA, and other works to restore the venue to its historically high standard.
The Palais is set to re-open its doors from mid-September, providing a diverse array of events for Nottingham and bringing dancing back to its welltrodden dancefloor.
The Palais de Danse first opened 24 April 1925 as a dance hall and billiard saloon. The dance hall was considered to be one of the finest of its kind outside London and its exterior architectural features were distinctive, particularly the large ornate globe. It hosted dancing in the evening and daily afternoon tea dances, as well as private hire every Tuesday and Friday.
During the late 1980s, it reinvented itself as a nightclub, most well-known for hosting the popular TV show Hitman and Her, and has been known by several names including the Ritzy and Oceana.
Now the venue prepares for its next chapter, set to once again become an important cultural asset for Nottingham as an event space for private hire, with the diary open for bookings now.
The Palais manager Sam Dye said: “As a local business deeply rooted in Nottingham’s music scene, we feel it’s only right to recognise the heritage of the venue and revive Nottingham’s original dancehall. So many generations of families have danced at this iconic venue, so we’re delighted to be bringing it back into use once again.”
Celebrating 175 years in Nottingham
We sat down with Sue Hayes, chief executive officer of Nottingham Building Society, to discuss the history and future of the region's longest-standing mutual organisation during its 175th anniversary
Can you tell us a bit about yourself, and your role within Nottingham Building Society?
“I became chief executive officer at The Nottingham a little over two years ago, after working more than 20 years in various financial institutions, from large international banks to a start-up.
“Before joining The Nottingham, I had no recent experience of a building society although at the start of my career, I worked for one of the largest for 10 years. The culture of mutual organisations, and being owned by our members which meant it has a real purpose, was the motivation for me to join.
“The opportunity for me was to take the heritage and affection that comes from a 174-year-old mutual building society and to savour the past and build the future into something strong and sustainable, as well as hopefully exciting for the future needs of our customers.
What are the key milestones and moments that have shaped its current identity?
“The Society’s identity has always been deeply tied to its commitment to helping people secure their dream homes; a legacy dating back to Samuel Fox, who founded the Society way back in 1849. He made it
possible for people to get a roof over their heads, alongside laying out an ethos of fairness and mutuality. A philosophy where everyone has the same opportunities.
“This year marks 175 years of the Society on Nottinghamshire’s high streets, and this remains a central theme of what we do today. While much has changed during that time, what hasn't changed is our desire to help others in our communitymembers still, rightly so, expect this from us.
“Recognising this milestone isn’t just about looking back; it’s about looking forward at how we can continue being a trusted partner for generations to come - many of our members have been with us from our earliest beginnings, with their own family members passing down the tradition of banking with us. So, we truly believe we’ll be a staple for our savers, and our members’ homes, for many years to come.
“Nottingham’s community is made up of people from all walks of life, many of whom look to us for help and support. A key milestone for us has been our ambition to make homeownership accessible to a wider range of people, including freelancers and others who may not have the traditional 9-to-5 job. Realistically, we know that people
The Old Branch
Samuel Fox
work differently today, and have different needs. This year already we have helped over 4,000 people buy a new home.
In your view, what does the most recent Nottinghamshire Day represent for local businesses?
“Although this year’s Nottinghamshire Day has been and gone, it’s a celebration of everything that makes the region unique - its heritage, culture, people and businesses. With 175 years behind us, we’ve grown alongside the Nottinghamshire community. Today, the county is made up of a rich blend of people all with varying needs, and we’ve adapted our products to meet the diverse expectations of those members. It’s an important day for all local businesses, regardless of their tenure, to recognise their place and contribution to fostering this sense of community.
“That same commitment has also extended beyond our members, with our own colleagues - not just in Nottingham, but further afield. We’re a big network, with over 500 colleagues throughout various regions of the UK, and one thing I am proud of seeing is our teams’ support of one another. In a bid to support our colleagues from all walks of life and corners of the country, in the last year alone, we’ve set up not one but five internal support networks. All colleagueled, each community - whether our ‘Embrace’,‘Pride’ or ‘Menopause’ network, ‘Mental Health Awareness’ network or our ‘Women’s Network’work towards equality and inclusion.
How has the Society committed to supporting the Nottinghamshire
community?
“As a mutual organisation, we’re governed by our members. So, it’s crucial that we celebrate who they are and actively invite difference through our doors. As a county, Nottinghamshire is inclusive and welcoming, made up of many different cultures, beliefs and lifestyles, and I strongly believe that businesses, like ourselves, play an important role in nurturing a sense of belonging for all.
“This was one of the main reasons why we sponsored NottsPride this year; an event which saw myself and a number of colleagues march through the city in support of the LGBTQIA+ community in the city and beyond - in fact, this year was the biggest and best NottsPride we’ve seen yet, demonstrating the level of support that’s truly out there in our city and county.
“Last year, we launched our own colleague-led Pride network - a group that aims to enhance the experience of our LGBTQIA+ colleagues through meeting and support groups. We also introduced gender-neutral signage across our two head offices, in a commitment to ensure everyone feels welcome - an ethos that extends way beyond our office walls, and into our branches.
“Reflecting on our promise of providing people with secure, safe and stable homes, we’ve also supported charities like Nottingham-based, Emmanuel House, and Shelter; both fantastic organisations that tackle isolation, vulnerability and homelessness.
“During this partnership, we’ve contributed a sizable donation, but
even more importantly, our colleagues have also volunteered to support the charity’s day-to-day operations in various capacities, including renovating their headquarters, sorting donations and cooking meals for the homeless. Nottingham is our home, and we want to make sure we’re going above and beyond offering quality financial services, as well as advice and a helping hand to our members.”
What does the future of the Society look like?
“We have a very clear purpose, and our strategy is delivering in terms of growth and success via our peers. We are nearly 2 years into executing our plans which were to deliver in the next 3 to 5 years after we agreed on the strategy in 2022. This is absolutely about using the latest technology and data, as well as fantastic people to deliver exceptional experiences for our customers and members.
“We’re investing in our head office and our branches to attract top talent and ensure we present ourselves in the best way possible, with a focus on maintaining a diverse and skilled workforce that reflects our values.
“Beyond the focus of fostering a diverse workforce, over the next few months in particular, we’re looking to challenge the outdated misconceptions that often come with building societies to present ourselves as a modern Society for the modern day. It's about celebrating our past and our Fantastic members of today and making sure we are fit for the future. We will be Looking to our customers, members and colleagues to be the barometer of when we have succeeded!”

AT MARCO PIERRE WHITE
Famed chef and restaurateur
Marco Pierre White is to launch a brand-new Autumn menu at restaurant which is located on Wollaton Street.
Using ingredients that are in season, the new menu will include dishes that are perfectly suited to the time of year.
One of very few restaurants that introduces seasonal menu every quarter, it’s also the only venue in the city that has a menu created by the one regarded by many as being the greatest British chef of all time. Included on the menu are a range of ‘Seasonal Specials’ as well as the ‘1961 Prix Fixe’ which pays homage to Marco’s birth year and at £19.61 for two-courses offers exceptional value for money.
Delivering perfectly balanced flavour combinations, the new Autumn dishes sit alongside the range of classic à la carte dishes which feature all the hallmarks of a menu that was worked on by Pierre White earlier in the year. Guests wanting to try out the new range of dishes can do so from 13 September when the new menu will become available.
Jolanta Szulczynska food and beverage manager said: “It’s always exciting to launch a new seasonal menu and this one is right up there as being one of the best yet. Also, I can’t stress enough the fact that this menu is 100 per cent Marco Pierre White. He spends days with our executive head chef,
Jason Everett, going through dish ideas and cooking them to see if they work, so it’s as close as anyone will get to having your meal cooked by the great man himself. Plus, the chance to enjoy a steak main plus a starter for just £19.61 off the ‘1961 Prix Fixe’ is superb value for money and is great for things like lunch dates.”
On the ‘Seasonal Specials’ starters include a Balmoral Game Pie, Baked Camembert, Butternut Squash Velouté and Moules Marinière. For main guests can choose from Roast Cod with Lentils & Pancetta, Pan Fried Venison and Wheeler’s Fish Pie. SWITCH UP
A charity that mentors young people in Nottingham at risk of offending has received a boost from a new partnership with Motorpoint Arena
Switch Up has become a charity partner of the world-class entertainment venue as they look to raise £550,000 for new premises where they can continue to transform the lives of hundreds of young people. A new donation feature on all shows when booking online at Motorpoint Arena now gives customers the option to make a charity donation to Switch Up. With around 750,000 visitors through the venue’s doors each year, it is hoped the new partnership can make a real difference.
It comes after the charity’s long-time patrons Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean took part in the launch of a fundraising drive for a new home as the current building is no longer fit for purpose. The National Ice Centre is the home of the ice skating Olympic Champions who continue to inspire the generations that follow them. Their farewell arena spectacular ‘Our Last Dance’ will be the last chance to see the iconic duo before they retire. Nottingham show dates are 23-24 April 2025.
Switch Up is looking to raise £550,000 in public donations, business funding and grants, which will help unlock a further £1.6m in grant funding and in-kind provision from the construction industry for its new facility. The charity founded by Marcellus Baz provides young people with a safe space and support to change their lives whether that may be being low on confidence, having mental health issues or feeling lonely trying to escape violence, gangs, or serious injury. Dr Marcellus Baz BEM, founder, Switch Up, said: “This partnership with Motorpoint
Arena is a real game changer for us. The support and generosity of the Arena and its visitors will enable us to reach our fundraising goals and secure a new space where we can continue our vital work with young people in Nottingham. This is more than just a partnership; it’s a powerful collaboration that will allow us to make an even greater impact in our community, transforming lives and offering hope to those who need it most. We are excited about the future and incredibly thankful for this opportunity.”
Martin Ingham, CEO of Motorpoint Arena, said: “As we celebrate our 25th anniversary, we’re thrilled to support Switch Up, an incredible local charity making a profound impact on Nottingham’s young people. Their commitment to the community aligns perfectly with our values and given our location in the city, we have a unique opportunity to give back and create a positive change to those on our doorstep.
“Over the last 24 years, we’ve delivered many initiatives to ensure our local communities can access our facilities and the benefits that brings. We’re delighted to take this next step and would like to encourage everyone to support this local charity which is very much aligned with our own commitment to improving young lives.”
Some of those initiatives include providing the popular holiday club for children eligible for free school meals; concerts for carers and tickets for troops - working with promoters to offer tickets
to these groups where possible - plus donating arena and ice skating tickets to charities for raffles and auctions generating hundreds of thousands of pounds for great local causes.
Motorpoint Arena is actively looking at opportunities to bring even more of the local community through the door, during its 25th anniversary celebrations next year. For more info, email marketing@national-ice-centre.com
There are also plans underway to welcome groups of young people from Switch Up to free skating sessions at the National Ice Centre to mark the new partnership, with proven benefits from the physical and social nature of the activity. Keep an eye on the socials for updates.
Save Hundreds On
In today's world of rising living costs, finding ways to save money on weekly shopping is more important than ever. Making small changes to the way you shop, and mastering the art of couponing, can lead to significant savings, sometimes hundreds of pounds over just a few weeks.
Experts at coupon site Bountii have revealed insider tips and tricks for getting the most out of your coupons and maximising your savings
Keep an eye out for hidden coupons
Most coupons, like many things in the modern world, have gone digital. You may come across a coupon code online, or see one appear on an app. However, it is important not to overlook the potential savings found in more traditional sources; keep an eye on your junk mail and product packaging, as these can still contain valuable coupons.
In the digital world, physical coupons can be a rare but worthwhile find, offering discounts that might not be available online. By checking these often-overlooked sources, you can find additional savings that many others might miss.
Use cashback apps
Cashback apps have become an essential tool for savvy shoppers looking to maximize their savings. While they already have some popularity, many people are overlooking them.
These apps offer a straightforward way to earn money back on purchases by simply uploading receipts or linking loyalty cards. Many provide cash rewards or discounts on a wide range of products, from everyday essentials to luxury items.
Not only do these apps help reduce the overall cost of your shopping, but they also occasionally offer exclusive deals and bonuses, making it easier to stretch your budget further. It is surprising how much you can save by simply incorporating cashback apps into your shopping.
Your Weekly Shop
Make the most out of loyalty programs
While many people have already joined loyalty programs for various stores, they often aren’t using them to their full advantage. Most loyalty programs reward you with points for every pound spent, which can later be redeemed for discounts or vouchers, bringing down the cost of your shopping over time.
Everybody knows to scan their loyalty card at the end of a big shop; however, many people are missing opportunities to earn points elsewhere. Small, frequent purchases, like topping up petrol or buying milk at a convenience store, can quickly add up. By checking for loyalty schemes everywhere you shop, you can maximise the benefits of every pound spent.
Additionally, members of these schemes often gain access to exclusive offers, personalised coupons, and special promotions that aren't available to nonmembers, helping to further maximise your savings.
Plan your shopping trip effectively
Planning your food shop is crucial for maximising savings and avoiding unnecessary spending. Start by making a list of items you need, then review in-store promotions and which coupons you have before choosing specific brands. Sometimes, brands you consider to be expensive can become the cheaper option with the right discounts. By aligning your shopping list with available deals, you can significantly reduce your overall costs.
By sticking to your list, you also avoid impulse purchases that can quickly add up. A well-planned shopping trip not only keeps your budget in check but also ensures you make the most of potential savings.
Another effective strategy is to shop at multiple places if it’s possible. Different shops may have varying prices and promotions on different items, so by visiting a few places, you can cherrypick the best deals on your shopping list.
Avoid these common mistakes
It is important to resist the temptation to buy unnecessary items just because
they are on offer or you have a coupon; even at a discount, it's wasted money if you don't need or use the item.
When you find coupons or discounts for items you need, keep track of their expiry dates to ensure you don’t miss the opportunity to save. This applies to both physical and digital coupons, as well as vouchers you earn from loyalty schemes- they all have an expiry date. When using coupons, always review shop policies beforehand; misunderstanding these rules can result in being unable to use your coupons at checkout, costing you the savings you planned on.
Fred Harrington, CEO of Bountii has commented:
“With the current cost of living, many people are struggling to buy essentials during their weekly shop, which is why it is crucial to do everything you can to bring the cost down.
“By incorporating these strategies into your weekly shop, you can maximise your savings without sacrificing the quality or variety of your groceries. Over time, these small adjustments can add up to significant savings, allowing you to make the most out of every penny spent.”
WE NEED YOUR HELP!
People in Nottingham are being asked to step up and support a month-long campaign to raise awareness about footwear poverty in the UK and abroad.
The STEPTEMBER campaign, run by Nottsbased Shoe Aid UK, aims to bring shoe poverty into sharp focus through a series of SHOESDAYS.
On each Tuesday in September, people are encouraged to join in by wearing no shoes or odd shoes or something similar, to highlight the importance of having 'fit for purpose' footwear.
Andy Hughes, CEO of the charity founded in 2017, said: “You can be as creative as you like, bake a cake in the shape of a shoe or lots of little cakes or biscuits in the shapes of shoes. Whatever creative idea you come up with, what we are asking is for you to show your support for Shoe Aid as we tackle footwear poverty here in the UK and abroad.
“From as little as a £1 donation, we can supply a suitable and fit for purpose piece of footwear to help someone to find a new job, for everyday general wear and use, to take part in sport or a pair of work boots.

“Poverty is neither parttime, full-time, volunteer, nor just a certain day of the week. Soon, children will be returning to school, some of them will not have a suitable pair of shoes to wear or a pair of trainers to take part in physical activity.”
Shoe Aid is already STEPPING UP to help schools throughout the country, providing suitable footwear for children whose families cannot afford school shoes for their child.
At least 280,000 homeless people (10,000 living on the streets) in the UK have no shoes or shoes that are falling to pieces. Over 2 million shoes are thrown into landfill every week. On average, one pair of shoes takes upwards of one thousand
years to biodegrade (synthetic fibres and textiles.) Shoe Aid is helping to avoid an environmental disaster for shoe manufacturers and distributors.
The charity has also provided education to over 25,000 people in more than one thousand organisations on the importance of recycling and repurposing footwear, while distributing tens of thousands of shoes to over fifteen countries worldwide.
Andy added: “Shoe Aid has volunteers who help sort and clean donated footwear in readiness. However, to help more people and
“Organising and taking part in events on a Tuesday in September will help Shoe Aid raise vital funds to combat footwear poverty. Our service is free, however, running Shoe Aid is not. Every item of footwear that Shoe Aid collects and donates can change lives, not just now but in the future too.”
“If you or your company, school, college or university, community enterprise would like to STEP UP for Shoe Aid, we would love you to get in touch, organise a collection or donate your surplus or returned stock.

CRASHED SKYDIVER SAYS THANKS TO LINCS & NOTTS AIR AMBULANCE
Lisa, from Edwinstowe, had jumped out of a plane at 3,500ft at Nottinghamshire’s, Langar Airfield, when she lost her bearings and knew her solo sky dive had gone disastrously wrong.
She crashed to the ground, breaking most of the bones in her right leg. Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance (LNAA) were immediately dispatched.
Lisa remembers waking up on that day in September 1999 feeling excited. This jump was a 30th birthday treat.
She said: ““The parachute opened, and I was free falling for a few seconds before the canopy inflated. Suddenly I lost my bearings and by the time I had corrected myself, I was unable to slow down in time.”
Lisa crashed to the ground, immediately hearing the crack as her leg bones broke.
LNAA soon arrived and the doctor/ paramedic team straightened Lisa’s leg and protected it with an inflatable splint, she was airlifted to Nottingham’s Queen’s Medical Centre.
Lisa is now the proud owner of several metal rods and plates between knee and ankle and 24 years later she still finds walking painful.
Lisa will always be indebted to the LNAA crew. She sums up: “The air ambulance makes all the difference in getting to a patient quickly. Without LNAA there would be a massive gap in service and in some circumstances loss of life without a doubt.”

Money-saving tips when riding the bus
In a time of rising living costs and everincreasing environmental awareness, public transport has become a crucial lifeline for many people looking to save money and lower their carbon footprint. While buses remain one of the most affordable and accessible travel options, there are several ways that savvy riders can stretch their pounds and pennies a little further. Ante Dagelić, CEO of bus ticketing platform GetByBus, has shared his top tips for saving money when riding the bus.
Purchase a weekly or monthly bus pass
These passes are often significantly discounted compared to paying for a single journey, especially for those who use the bus daily. For a daily commuter, investing in a weekly pass would give them unlimited access to buses for a reduced price each day. This not only simplifies budgeting but also ensures that frequent riders get the most value for their money.
Check if you’re eligible for a discounted travel pass or ticket
Another vital step to reducing your transportation costs is determining if you qualify for a discounted pass. Most forms of transport provide reduced fares for specific groups, such as students, apprentices, pensioners and individuals with disabilities. These discounts can substantially lower the
cost of commuting, making public transportation even more affordable. In London for example, weekly passes for apprentices and students aged 18+ are capped at £17.30, which is £7.40 less than a standard adult pass. Eligibility requirements will vary by location, so it's essential to check with your local operator to see what discounts are available and how to apply. Often, proving your eligibility is as simple as showing a valid ID, student card or NHS badge when buying your ticket.
Make use of bus service mobile apps
Many transport systems now offer mobile apps that not only make planning your journey easier but also provide access to exclusive discounts and promotional fares. These apps often allow riders to purchase tickets or passes directly from their smartphones, sometimes at a lower rate than paying the driver with cash or a physical card. Additionally, mobile apps typically feature real-time updates on bus schedules, helping you avoid missed connections and unnecessary expenses.
Take advantage of seasonal promotional offers
Many operators run special promotions during holidays, local events, or certain times of the year, offering discounted fares or even free rides. These
promotions often aim to encourage more people to use public transport and can result in substantial savings for regular commuters and occasional riders alike. It's worth keeping an eye on announcements from your local transit provider or signing up for notifications to ensure you don't miss out on these limited-time deals.
Understand your bus operator’s refund policy
Life is unpredictable, and there may be times when you purchase a pass or ticket that you can’t use as planned. Knowing whether you're eligible for a refund or credit can prevent you from losing money on unused fares. Some transit agencies offer partial refunds on monthly or weekly passes if they are returned before being fully used, while others might allow you to transfer the value of an unused pass to a future date. Some companies offer refunds if your bus arrives late or is cancelled, but this depends on your individual bus provider’s terms and conditions.
“Using public transportation is a brilliant way to take advantage of local transport systems, save money and reduce your carbon footprint. Maximising your savings while riding the bus is all about being informed and strategic. These tips aim to help every commuter stretch their hard-earned cash that little bit further.”

A TRIBUTE TO WHITNEY HOUSTON
After selling 100,000 tickets last year with its theatre tour, including soldout shows at the Royal Albert Hall, The London Palladium and other UK venues, Queen of the Night – A Tribute to Whitney Houston is back bigger than ever with the 2024 Arena Tour.
Billed as the biggest celebration of the music and life of one of the greatest singers of all time: Whitney Houston, the show comes to Nottingham’s Motorpoint Arena on 1 November. The show includes the powerhouse hits, the RnB feels, and hits all the Whitney spots, for two-and-ahalf hours of songs to celebrate her life.
Audiences can experience an electrifying production that honours her timeless songs with sensational vocalists and a full live band. The show is an extraordinary journey through three decades of alltime hits such as I Wanna Dance With Somebody, One Moment In Time, I’m Every Woman, I Will Always Love You, My Love Is Your Love, So Emotional, Run To You, Saving All My Love, How Will I Know, Million Dollar Bill, The Greatest Love Of All, and many more.
It’s a huge journey for the show’s star Adenike Adewale who described herself as a ‘shy child’ who began singing in choirs and school productions before plucking up courage to audition for The Voice in 2021, making it though to the semi final singing a Whitney song.
Adenike said: “I had so much support through that and I realised it was what I really wanted to do – so when Whitney –Queen Of The Night came up, I grabbed the chance.
“My mum was a huge fan, so Whitney Houston was always ringing and singing in our house from an early age. That vocal passion she had, the gospel background, it spoke to me. Her voice wasn’t just pleasing to the ear, but the passion was something I related to. I aspired to have that range and that freedom of vocal ability – it was so powerful.”
The show appeals to all generations, says Adenike: “You still see teenagers go crazy over I Wanna Dance With Somebody, just as their mums and grandmothers have done.”
Whitney – Queen Of The Night has an interactive style where the audience feels
Showing
very much part of the experience, with some even being invited up to the stage to sing and dance.
The live band plays a huge role with guitar, bass, saxophone, percussion, drummer and piano, two backing dancers and singers and a featured vocalist.
Adenike said: “In between the songs, we are taking people through her life with the chat. That’s what makes it different as a ‘tribute’ show as such, in that I’m not being Whitney, not acting as her, not until the music kicks in and my voice starts. As soon as the music starts it’s a faithful Whitney performance, but between times we are sharing that story.
“With the show, we get messages and comments from people who saw her perform live and they tell us how much they love our show which is a huge compliment. It’s powerful to bring a performance that reflects the time when she was at her best and very special to be able to help people recreate their memories of Whitney and how very, very special she was at her prime.”
Tickets for Whitney – Queen Of The Night are on sale now starting from £31.50. Hospitality packages also available like the Green Room Experience, including a welcome drink on arrival and a pre-show meal. Or feel like VIPs for the night, with a private executive suite experience, where you can enjoy the show from a viewing balcony offering panoramic views, this includes six tickets, a pre-paid bar tab, waiting service and access to The Green Room.

THE SMASH HIT COMEDY IS COMING TO NOTTINGHAM
With award-winning comedian Seann Walsh, Chris Harper (Call the Midwife, Coronation Street) and Aden Gillett (The Crown, The House of Elliot), Iqbal Khan (East is East, National Theatre and Othello, RSC) directs a brand-new production of Yasmina Reza's fiendishly clever and hilariously funny play ART on tour from Autumn 2024.
This multi-award-winning play (winner of Best Comedy at the Olivier Awards, Tony Awards and Moliere Awards), presented by Joshua Beaumont and Original Theatre, is a razor-sharp exploration of art, love and friendship that will stay with you long after the curtain falls.
A seemingly simple purchase of contemporary art - an all-white painting – ignites a hilarious debate amongst three close friends. What begins as a light-hearted discussion about art quickly descends into a riotous exploration of the blurred lines between art and reality. We caught up with one of the stars of the play, Seann Walsh for a Q & A
What is ART about?
It’s beautiful in its simplicity. When you boil it down, it’s about a piece of art that has been purchased by one of three friends, and that piece of art ends up testing the friendship. It’s really fun and reminds me of that feeling when you’ve had a tough day, and the smallest thing becomes the straw that ends up breaking the camel’s back.
Tell me more about your character, Yvan He’s someone who is level-headed, in general, and mild-mannered. But he’s
about to get married and has entered his fiancee’s family business, factors which are testing how stable he is as a person. The play catches him at this particularly vulnerable time in his life.
Do you find him relatable?
I can certainly relate to the way the pressure gets to him. And I definitely recognise the dynamics in his relationship with Marc and Serge. It feels very representative of male friendship, and the way that we adapt ourselves to fit whoever we’re talking to. There’s a great sense of energy in the script.
You recently made your stage acting debut in Twelfth Night. How was that experience?
I absolutely adored it. And I’m so happy I had that stage experience to take into ART. My favourite aspect of comedy has always been performing, but the great advantage of acting is that I can still get laughs without having to be myself, which is an absolute bonus!
Do you think comedy has been a good training ground for acting?
In some ways. When I was playing Malvolio in Twelfth Night there was a bit of breaking the fourth wall and speaking directly to the audience, so it was useful for that. But generally I don’t think there is too much crossover between stand up and acting. When you do a play, one of the first things you have to interpret is the writer’s words, and then connect with the other actors. As a comedian, you don’t have that process, though it does mean you’re comfortable in front of a crowd.
Are you enjoying working with producers Joshua Beaumont and Original Theatre who are marking their 20th anniversary this year? They’re lovely to work with, and they’ve put together such a good team. Chris
You co-host a podcast, Oh My Dog!, with Jack Dee. Seeing as he has previously been in ART, did he give you any tips?
I did contact him when I was first approached about it, and he said what a great experience he’d had, and how much he loved the play. But we didn’t talk too much about his interpretation of the character - he also played Yvan. I didn’t want to muddy the waters, I think it’s good to go in fresh. But having said that I do wish I’d seen his portrayal!
How did you get into comedy?
I was a classic attention seeker as a kid, and got into a lot of trouble at school. Jim Carrey was an early hero, and I always wanted to be a stand up. I feel very fortunate that I’ve ended up living that dream. You have to remind yourself sometimes that the boy who left school with one GCSE has done alright for himself.
Do you think it’s harder to get established in stand up now?
I just think it’s different. If I was starting out now I’d be learning to edit videos on my phone and use social media apps to build a following. I’ve got friends that weren’t getting too many opportunities who have now exploded thanks to social media. I sound like an old fart, but it’s a completely different world from when I started out, when it was all about doing gigs.
Are you aiming to do more acting in the future?
I certainly hope so. Doing Twelfth Night was amazing and I’m really excited for ART. But it’s not really up to me – I’ll go in whatever direction pays the bills!

Jane Mcdonald: “With all my love tour is the one i’m most proud of” … and it’s not even started yet!

with all my love
The title “National Treasure” is one readily bandied about these days, but warmhearted and witty Yorkshire lass Jane McDonald has to be one of the truest examples out there.
Jane’s story is a great example of a girl done good; first captured 25 years ago on BBC docusoap The Cruise, Jane became an overnight sensation – and has spent the years since forging a hugely successful career as a singer and TV personality.
Her solo shows have captivated audiences up and down the country, and now she’s back preparing to hit the road once more with an all-new tour With All My Love this autumn.
The new tour, Jane’s biggest to date, starts with two nights at Blackpool’s iconic Opera House, stops off at The London Palladium and will close with what promises to be an extra special tour finale at Leeds First Direct Arena.
“This is going to be the tour I’m most proud of – I can already feel it,” says a clearly excited Jane McDonald as she prepares for With All My Love.
The tour is still several months away, but already Jane is ‘buzzing, absolutely buzzing’ about the prospect of taking her show on the road once more.
“I feel like I’m a phoenix rising from the ashes in a way,” Jane says of her return to the road. “The flame had gone out, but the embers were still burning away in the background. Now they’re reignited and they are burning so brightly and so strong, I’m ready to come back.
“I am in a very good place. Something about being a bit older – I’ve got that ‘couldn’t care less’ thing now, I’ve let go of the angst that you get when you’re younger.
“Instead, now I just think ‘It’ll be right, it’ll be fine’, not worrying about every last thing. I’m excited about everything. The fear seems to have gone.
“I don’t think I have been this excited for a tour ever,” she adds, eyes glowing. “I have had a break and have a whole new energy for live performance and cannot wait to see my fans
again as I’ve missed them.”And the fans have clearly missed her too.
“Everybody is like ‘Thank God she’s back’… You never know if that will be the reaction though, do you?,” Jane laughs. “The reaction from fans has been humbling, so wonderful. I am just full of gratitude.”
Jane’s return to live performance will come three years after the death of her fiancé Ed Rothe in 2021. And despite her grief, Jane is seizing life and finding a new direction for her love – with this tour very much dedicated to her loyal fans.
“With age, I’ve learnt that nobody’s life is easy or wonderful all the time,” Jane said. “When you go through something tragic, it can take a while before you’re able to look up and see the blue skies again, for the joy to come back to life. But, when that joy does come back it’s even more precious than before. You start to feel good again and you want to share it.
“My fans have been through every part of my life for 25 years and I’m ready to say ‘I’m OK now, and I hope you are too’.
“It’s a two-way thing with my fans, we hold each other’s hands. I hold their hands and they hold mine.
“And you know what, I have a song I wrote for my mother ‘The Hand That Leads Me’ and thinking about it – it’s probably time now that I give that song to the fans. They are the ones that get me through, they make me sing and make me smile.
“Everything I do has love and my heart at the very centre of it, and I want this tour to say to my fans ‘Thank you for being around and waiting for me’.
“I’m in a good place so let’s have some fun.”
Jane is remaining tight-lipped about detailed preparations for the tour, other than hinting there are treats in store for fans, including new disco medleys – ‘I already know that’s going to tear the roof off’, emotional tributes and a show that is ‘more personal than ever’.
And for the first time, Jane will be playing piano during the live shows.
“The past couple of years, I’ve been so busy travelling to film the TV shows, I feel like I have been lost on plane journeys,” she said, “so it’s been nice to take the time to sit down, at home and look ahead to this tour.
“I’ve been sat at my piano, and I will be sitting down at the piano as part of the show too – which is something we haven’t done before. And I’m going to be talking about how I do it, how I go about writing, which is basically letting my fingers flow over the keys and then I’m off.
“It’s really very exciting to already see it take shape.”
Another first for With All My Love will see Jane touring with a major promoter’s backing, in the form of Live Nation’s Cuffe and Taylor.
“That is just fantastic,” she said. “My team goes back to 2009, and I’ve got to the stage where I have fantastic people by my side, and I’m in safe hands – those people will always be there.
“But this takes it to another level – and is probably why I’m enjoying myself so much already. I don’t have to even be thinking about the logistics side of things, never mind worrying about it like I have before.
“All that is taken care of, so I can just be ‘the artist’. It’s strange though, as I am still a bit of a control freak! No…make that perfectionist. But it’s lovely to have people with us making all the arrangements.
“Alongside the people who’ve been with me a long time, it’s now an absolute dream team.”
And hopefully Jane will be living the dream with her fans, sharing her ‘good place’, and bringing energy to venues across the country.
“The energy at my shows is always so special – it’s magical, honestly,” she said.
“It starts on the stage, and it goes out into the audience where it grows and it spreads, and it’s a whole circle because that energy comes back and we all feel it back again on stage. Open up your chakras, or whatever it is you believe in, and feel the energy in the room!
“But it’s so important to me in this job; if you can make somebody feel better through a performance, that’s brilliant, that’s the most important thing.
“With All My Love – I sound like a Beatle… You know, ‘All You Need Is Love’, but it’s true – it’s so important. I’m thankful to the fans for giving me their love, it has helped me through and hopefully now I can reciprocate and give it back…”
Jane will be appearing at Nottingham Royal Concert Hall on November 13th. Tickets available at

Etruria Industrial Museum, Staffordshire’s “hidden gem”, is tucked into a junction of the Trent & Mersey and Caldon canals in Stoke-on-Trent.
Opened in 1875, the mill produced the ground bone, flint and stone used to make world-famous ‘bone china’. On steaming weekends, its 1820s beam engine ‘Princess’, made to James Watt’s design, drives the world’s only operational steam-powered potter’s mill, a scheduled monument.
Etruria Industrial Museum represents the ‘business end’ of pottery-making; without the ground raw materials produced by mills like these, there would have been no pottery industry at all.
The boiler room houses a hand-stoked Cornish boiler from 1903. The boiler room, engine room, pan room, crushing room and kilns are all open to the public, as are the visitor centre, café and a working blacksmith’s forge.
The site is also inextricably connected to canal history. The Caldon Canal connects Etruria with the Staffordshire Moorlands, Leek and Uttoxeter, and is replenished by Rudyard Lake and other local pools. Meanwhile, the Trent &
Mersey forms its highest section from The Harecastle Tunnel to the summit lock at Eturia.
Entirely volunteer-run, Etruria Industrial Museum is proud to be keeping important industrial and canal heritage alive for future generations.

WALTZ DOWN MEMORY LANE
Harlaxton Manor showcases a private collection of Winston Churchill memorabilia with live music, military vehicles, dancing and historical reenactments.
A picturesque Lincolnshire landmark set in a historic estate is hosting a 1940s extravaganza next month - and all are invited to attend the nostalgic spectacle. On Saturday 26th and Sunday 27th October, Harlaxton Manor will open its gates, which are usually strictly closed to the public, for the first event of its kind at the impressive stately home.
There will be live entertainment from the local wartime musical tribute act and 1940s vocalist Miss Sarah-Jane, as well as The Blitz Dancers demonstrating the favoured dances of the time, such as the waltz, foxtrot and tango. Taking centre stage for the two-day-long event will be a private collection of memorabilia honouring the wartime Prime Minister: ‘Meeting Winston Churchill’. This consists of a true-to-life waxwork model of the politician displayed in the Grade-I listed building’s incredible interior as well as highlights from the country’s biggest private collection of Churchill memorabilia - including a painting by the man himself.
There will also be a Winston Churchill lookalike, Steve McTigue, on hand to speak to guests as well as a variety of authentic military vehicles from the era prominently displayed, including Willys Jeeps, GPW Jeeps and Dodge WC51 weapons carriers. Finally, there will be a selection of WW2 reenactment groups to entertain and educate visitors from the perspectives of the RAF, RASC, Royal Artillery and Military Police (Provost).
Dr Holly Carter, Director and Dean of Harlaxton College said: “Harlaxton Manor is honoured to present this incredible private collection of Winston Churchill memorabilia - especially given that 2024 marks the 150th anniversary of his birth.
“We’ll be showcasing some real items of historical interest that history buffs and those with an affinity for the military are sure to enjoy, as well as giving guests a true taste of the times with live 1940s music, dancers and military vehicles from the era such as proudly displayed in the Manor’s Front Circle.
“We’d like to extend our warmest thanks to the late Lord Cormack, the former CEO of Heritage Lincolnshire, who made this opportunity possible. Harlaxton Manor has a unique history tied directly to the war effort, making this a labour of love that honours the rich heritage of this
wonderful building and the last wishes of a much-loved diplomat.”
During wartime, Harlaxton Manor served as a military base for the nation’s armed forces. In 1942, RAF Harlaxton was recommissioned to accommodate The Royal Air Force's 1st Airborne Division - a crucial addition to the war situated in the heart of Bomber County.
Constructed in 1831 by businessman Gregory Gregory, the building has seen many varied uses - from a fine stately home to a trench warfare and artillery school, home to an eccentric businesswomen who saved the manor from demolition and regularly held seances on the property, a retreat for the Society of Jesus and finally as an overseas campus for the American University of Evansville.
Harlaxton Manor boasts an eclectic appearance unlike any other, featuring a magnificent fusion of Baroque, Elizabethan and Jacobean architecture, built in local Ancaster limestone and including French-style terraces, an Italian Garden, a Dutch ornamental canal and even an observatory.
The collection will only be available to view at Harlaxton Manor for a limited time, however, those who are unable to attend in October can enjoy the memorabilia as part of the Manor’s ‘Christmas Through the Ages’ spectacular, which kicks off in December - details of which will be announced shortly.
With free car parking, tickets to Harlaxton Manor’s 1940s weekend start from just £8.50. Entry is £15 per adult, £8.50 for children and £12 for concessions, with family tickets (for two adults and three children) available for £40, under 2s are complimentary. Advance booking is recommended, although a limited number of tickets will be available on the day. Harlaxton Manor welcomes guests from 10am to 5pm, with the last entry at 4pm.

A GOOD NIGHT'S SLEEP
A good night’s sleep is one of the most important things for our health, and there are few better feelings than lying on a cold pillow at the end of a long day. However, as summer approaches and the weather warms up, a hot bedroom can become a major obstacle to a restful slumber and require adjustments to our sleep routines. Staying cool at night comes down to keeping your environment and body at a comfortable temperature. Luckily, bed furnishings expert Ashley Hainsworth of Bed Kingdom has offered tips for sleeping in the heat as the days get warmer. Say goodbye to fatigue and irritability on hot summer mornings; these tips will assist you in having a peaceful, uninterrupted snooze that helps you feel good all day and allows you to function at your best.
Get the most out of your fan While standard fans don’t reduce the temperature of the air, they do create a cooling effect by displacing the warm air that is in contact with your skin, which increases heat loss through our bodies. If the air is cooler outside than it is inside, try placing one fan by an open window with the fan facing inwards.
Opt for lightweight breathable bedding. Swapping out your winter duvet for something lighter, with a lower tog rating between 4 to 8 should be optimum depending on your preference. Alternatively, ditch the duvet altogether for just a sheet or blanket. Choose bedding and blankets made from natural fabrics, such as cotton and linen, as these are breathable and keep you cooler while sleeping. They also tend to be comfortable, hypoallergenic, and sustainable too, so they’re good investments all around.
Choose sleepwear made from natural fibres. Similarly, consider wearing loose sleepwear made
from natural fabrics instead of tight, synthetic clothing. Synthetic fibres, such as polyester and nylon, are more likely to make you feel hot and sweaty at night due to their lack of breathability. Don’t forget that the same applies to your underwear, too.
Shut out the heat with blinds and curtains. During the day, it’s best to keep heat out of your room as much as you can to ensure your environment is as cool as possible when you eventually go to bed. Invest in blackout blinds or curtains and keep them shut all day during hot periods.
Keep windows open when it’s cooler outside. In the hot summer months, it’s likely to be cooler at night than during the day, so it’s a good idea to leave your windows open overnight in order to allow fresh air to flow in. Be cautious of any additional noise issues or security concerns that this might result in, and make sure you employ any necessary preventative measures to deal with potential allergens and insects coming inside. If you decide to keep your windows shut, try opening doors intermittently so that the room is as well-ventilated as possible and doesn’t become stuffy.
Take a hot shower before bed
If you’re already feeling cool and refreshed when getting into bed, it’ll be easier to fall asleep. While a cool or lukewarm shower may seem like the obvious choice, they can be stimulating and may keep you energised for longer, preventing a good sleep. It will help your body cool down more quickly, as you release more body heat through your extremities such as your hands and feet, which helps lower your core body temperature and make it easier to fall asleep. A bath may also be the perfect remedy after a long, hot day as it can cool you
down and relax you.
Stay hydrated throughout the day It’s always important to stay hydrated, and this is particularly true when it’s hot, as you are likely to sweat more, which can lead to dehydration. Drinking lots of water during the day will help regulate your body temperature and make this less likely as your body has enough fluids to cool you down through perspiration. A cold glass of water by your bed can also provide hydration when needed.
Place a refrigerated water bottle in the bed. Just as you might use a hot water bottle in the winter months, a refrigerated water bottle can be placed in your bed an hour or so before you sleep to help cool down your bedding. This can also be used as a makeshift cold compress once you get into bed – place it in a water bottle cover or wrap it in a towel or fabric and keep it with you while you sleep for additional cooling vibes.
Put a pillowcase in the freezer
Still craving that cold pillow sensation? Try putting your pillowcase in the freezer for half an hour or so before bed, sealed in a plastic bag to keep it clean. Put it back on your pillow right before you go to bed, and it will instantly provide a crisp feeling that lasts long enough to ease you into a comfortable, cool sleep.
Chill your socks and wear them overnight. Cooling your feet lowers the overall temperature of your skin and body, as they have a large surface area with lots of specialised blood vessels that divert heat away from the body. If you feel hot throughout the day, putting your socks in the fridge a few hours before bed and wearing them while you sleep may help cool you down – especially if you’re someone who is already used to the sensation of wearing socks in bed.
Health & Wellbeing
Step Up & Go!
If you’re into health and wellbeing, you’ve no doubt come across the argument for the positive benefits of walking 10,000 steps a day.
With the popularity of wearable fitness trackers, it’s a concept that’s as relevant as ever. However, with many of us working in sedentary jobs, it can be a struggle to hit this goal. So, here's some handy tips on how to achieve 10,000 steps a day.
10,000 - Where Does This Magic Number Come From?
It’s believed the notion of 10,000 steps started in Japan, in the run up to the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. With the population gripped by Olympics fever, pedometers – devices that count how many steps you take – became very popular, as the health-conscious Japanese people started keeping track of their activity levels. One Japanese pedometer manufacturer came out with a device called manpo-kei –meaning 10,000 steps. The idea took off and 10,000 steps became the standard for daily fitness, not just in Japan but around the world.
Most of us aren’t reaching anywhere near 10,000 steps a day – the equivalent to approximately 5 miles. According to the NHS, the average British person walks between 3,000 and 4,000 steps a day. While there’s no need to pressure yourself to achieve the full 10,000 steps, it’s a good goal to work towards. After all, studies have recognised the health benefits, such as lower blood pressure, better blood glucose levels and improved mood.
Start Slowly
If you’re new to exercise, 10,000 steps may seem an insurmountable challenge to begin with, so you may want to build up your fitness gradually. If this is the case, it’s a good idea to aim for 4,000 steps a day to begin with, then add 1,000 extra steps every few weeks until you reach the magic 10,000.
Boost Your Step Count at Work
If you’re a busy professional, you may be wondering where you’re going to find the time to put in 5 miles of walking a day – especially with so many of us in sedentary roles. Look for opportunities to move; if you live close to your office, walk to work; take the stairs, instead of the lift; make an effort to walk over to speak with colleagues, rather than email; integrate exercise into work tasks – walking meetings are a chance to step away from your desk and a change of scenery may even inspire new ideas.
Overall, it’s proven that people who are more active during the working day experience a 22% increase in fitness, and a 70% improvement in their ability to make complex decisions compared to sedentary colleagues.
Activities to reach 10,000 steps
Walking is not the only way to increase your step count; even things you may not think of as exercise can help, such as gardening, housework and shopping. Here’s a quick guide to activities you can easily fit into your everyday routine and the approximate number of steps you can achieve per minute by doing them:

Embrace Your G re ys
Premature greying can be a concern for many, but recognising the early signs can help in managing it effectively. Look out for:
• Strands of hair that lose pigment and turn white or grey.
• Changes in hair texture often become finer or coarser.
• Patchy greying, starting around the temples or at the crown.
These early signs are a signal to start paying closer attention to your hair care routine and consider steps to manage or embrace the changes. Recognising these initial signs early allows you to explore preventive measures, covering options, or ways to embrace your natural greying process.
Preventing premature grey hair
While genetics play a significant role in when and how we go grey, certain lifestyle choices can influence the process:
Healthy diet: A balanced diet rich in essential vitamins and minerals, particularly B vitamins, iron, and copper, can significantly contribute to maintaining your natural hair colour.
Stress management: Chronic stress can accelerate the greying process. Incorporating relaxation techniques like yoga, meditation, or regular physical exercise can help mitigate this effect. Avoid smoking: Smoking has been linked to premature greying due to its negative impact on overall health and hair follicles.
Sun exposure: Protecting your hair from excessive sun exposure and harsh chemicals can preserve its natural pigment. You can prevent sun exposure by using hair/scalp sun cream, wearing a hat, or keeping out of the sun, especially for long periods.
Covering grey hair
For those who prefer to cover their greys, there are several easy and effective methods:
Hair dye: Choose a high-quality hair dye that matches your natural colour. Semipermanent dyes are a good option for a less permanent change.
Root touch-up kits: These kits are convenient for covering greys between salon visits.
Highlighting: Adding highlights can blend greys with your natural colour, creating a more youthful appearance.
Hair fibers: Spray on hair fibers are ultralight, tiny fibers composed of keratin protein. When applied to your hair and scalp, they effectively hide thinning areas and grey hairs. This year's Love Island contestants Patsy and Maunveer spoke on the Not My Bagg podcast that Ronnie is open about using hair fibre spray in the villa to help with his thinning hair.
Embracing grey hair
Following in the footsteps of Louis Tomlinson, many are choosing to embrace their greys. Here’s how you can do it too:
Confidence is key: Styling out grey hair is all about confidence. Own your look and wear it proudly.
Regular hair care: Maintain a regular hair care routine to keep your grey hair looking healthy and vibrant.
Stylish new cut: Consider a new haircut that compliments your grey hair and enhances your overall look. Talk to your hairdresser to see what might suit you best.
Charlie Winman, Operations Director of RoxyHair.com commented: “Everyone can find their unique way of dealing with grey hair, whether it’s through prevention, coverage, or embracing it wholeheartedly. As Louis Tomlinson has shown, greying is a natural part of aging that can be embraced with style and confidence.”

AN EDUCATION FOR LIFE
A boarding school is a residential school where pupils live and study during the academic year. Currently there are approximately 500 such schools across England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
Many boarding schools are housed in ancient buildings, combining beautiful, centuries-old architecture with modern classrooms and facilities.
Boarding schools offer pupils a top quality education, helping them to develop their skills and abilities. In the UK all boarding schools have to meet strict government standards on the quality of their teaching, accommodation and pupil care.
The term ‘boarders’ applies to pupils who live at the school, while ‘day pupils’ live at home and attend school during the day. Having a mix of both types of pupils creates a good social atmosphere.
At a boarding school, pupils usually live together in houses – there might be several of these in each school. Girls and boys will have separate accommodation and usually there will be at least one house parent living on site to look after them. The UK boarding school system is split into three levels: Primary education is for children aged four or five up to 11 or 13. This may be referred to as primary school, infant school, junior school,
pre-preparatory school or preparatory school.
Secondary education is for pupils aged 11 or 13 to 16. This may be referred to as secondary school, high school or senior school.
In the last two years of secondary school (age 14 to 16), most pupils study for GCSE qualifications. Sixth form is for students aged 16 to 18. The two years are often called Lower Sixth and Upper Sixth. At sixth form level, most pupils take A-levels.
government authority.
Boarding schools offer a wide range of subjects including maths, sciences, history, geography, drama, IT, literature, foreign languages and sport. All of these qualifications are highly regarded by universities, colleges and employers.
Applications to independent boarding schools are made directly to the school. Look on the school’s website or contact them to ask about the application process. Applications for state schools are usually handled by the local
Tuition at state schools is free of charge, but you will need to pay for boarding. For independent schools, you will need to pay for tuition and boarding. Boarding fees generally cover items such as accommodation, food and drink and laundry. You may be able to fund your studies with a scholarship or bursary. Ask the schools that you are interested in what they can offer.
Pupils may need to take an entrance exam, so you should check with the relevant school to find out about their specific requirements.

You can cool your shopping fever in a number of modern shopping malls (Palladium, Nový Smíchov, Chodov, Arkády Pankrác, and more) or on Pařížská Street, Prague’s most exclusive

A CITY OF CONTRASTS
Berlin, the capital of Germany, is a city that embodies a complex blend of history, culture, and modernity. It has been a significant center of political, cultural, and artistic life in Europe for centuries.
Historical Significance
Perhaps the most famous symbol of the Cold War, the Berlin Wall divided the city from 1961 until 1989. The Wall's fall in 1989 marked the beginning of German reunification. Today, sections of the Wall still stand as poignant reminders of this period, most notably at the Berlin Wall Memorial and the East Side Gallery.
Berlin was at the heart of Nazi Germany, and many sites around the city reflect its tumultuous history during World War II. The Reichstag, Hitler's Bunker (Führerbunker), and the Holocaust Memorial are significant landmarks that draw millions of visitors each year.
Cultural Scene
Berlin boasts over 170 museums, covering everything from classical antiquities on Museum Island to contemporary art in the Hamburger Bahnhof. The city’s rich cultural landscape makes it a paradise for history buffs, art lovers, and curious minds.
Berlin is renowned for its vibrant nightlife, particularly its electronic music scene. Clubs like Berghain are legendary worldwide. The city also has a thriving live music scene, with genres ranging from classical concerts at the Berlin Philharmonic to underground punk shows. The city hosts numerous festivals throughout the year, including the Berlinale (Berlin International Film Festival), Carnival of Cultures, and Berlin Art Week.
Modern Berlin
Each area of Berlin has its unique vibe. Mitte is known for its historical sites and museums, Kreuzberg and Friedrichshain
for their alternative culture and nightlife, and Prenzlauer Berg for its bohemian charm and family-friendly atmosphere. Berlin has become a hub for startups and innovation. The city’s tech industry is growing rapidly, making it a center for creativity and new ideas in Europe.
Architecture
Berlin’s architecture is a mix of different eras. From the grandeur of the Brandenburg Gate and Charlottenburg Palace to the stark modernism of the Berlin Hauptbahnhof and the Fernsehturm (TV Tower), the city’s skyline reflects its layered history.
Green Spaces
Despite being a bustling metropolis, Berlin offers plenty of green spaces. The Tiergarten is a massive park in the heart of the city, perfect for a peaceful escape. The Tempelhofer Feld, a former airport turned public park, is one of the city’s most unique recreational areas.
Culinary Scene
Berlin's culinary landscape is as diverse as its population. From traditional German dishes like currywurst and schnitzel to international cuisines from around the world, the city offers something for every palate. Street food markets like Markthalle Neun and the variety of vegan and vegetarian restaurants are particularly popular.
Transport and Accessibility
Berlin has an extensive public transport network, including buses, trams, and the U-Bahn (subway) and S-Bahn (urban rail) systems. Cycling is also very popular, with dedicated bike lanes throughout
Berlin is a city of contrasts—where history meets modernity, and tradition coexists with innovation. It’s a dynamic, ever-evolving metropolis that offers something for everyone

Perissa, Perivolos or Kamari (home to a gorgeous black sand beach).
Whilst Oia has all the amazing views it can be more expensive and attracts more tourists in the summer, meaning it tends to get busy. For those who desire breathtaking views but a little more privacy, choose Imerovigli or Firostefani. Wherever you decide to stay, you are guaranteed delightful weather and the beauty of the Santorini sunset.
There are a few hiking routes around the island, the most popular one is the hike from Fira to Oia. There is also a hike to the highest point of Santorini and Ancient Thira. If you desire a leisurely stroll or an intense hike, you are guaranteed to find a route that suits you.
If you would prefer to visit Santorini when there are less tourists and holiday goers, but still want to enjoy the warm weather, visit in June or early October. Santorini is lovely in the winter as well, if you do not mind the colder weather – the island is very quiet and prices are much cheaper.
Contrary to what most people might think, Santorini is a great destination for single travelers and groups of friends, the nightlife is good and it is very easy to meet fellow travelers. The bottom line is that whatever you choose to do, you will love Santorini. And it is even better in person.

Renaissance of brown
An autumn palette should be like a pumpkin spice latte - spicy, nature-infused and with a shot of cream. Let these flavours inspire you this season with cinnamon browns, creamy neutrals and terracotta taking centre stage with your interiors.
Amthal Karim, Head of Design at Furniture And Choice, comments: “It can’t be denied that brown is having its moment. In fact, we’re predicting brown tones to be even more popular (and moodier) as the temperature drops. Brown tones have had a resurgence over the last few years and there’s a wide range to choose from - light milky lattes or beige, golden caramels, dark chocolate and mochas. Brown’s popularity is linked to the rise of earth tones which take inspiration from the outdoors. Biophilic in nature, earth tones like brown, rust and terracotta create a sense of calm and ground the room.
Choosing brown as a wall colour will make your room feel like a cosy cocoon - perfect for those nights when you just want to stay in and watch Netflix. As people move away from stark whites and cold greys, paint companies have started to highlight this. Dulux likens brown's rise in popularity with the quiet luxury trend where less is more and for 2024 there’s a selection of brown paint tones like Egyptian Cotton, Warm Truffle and Perfectly Taupe.
Now the question is - what shade of brown is the best? Choosing a light brown like camel or beige on the walls will give your living room a luxe feel and a more contemporary touch. They are also super easy to pair with darker brown accents, cream and off-white, pinks and deep blues for contrast. Brown shades with a red or orange undertone will warm up the room and give it that dopamine boost that’s so on
trend. Shades like espresso or mocha can be used to highlight parts of the room like shelving for an alcove. This will draw the eye upwards and serve as a backdrop for neutral, cream and beige accessories.
For the past two years, we have been moving away from rustic decor and towards clean lines and smart curves. This echoes the quiet luxury trend that shows no sign of dying down. Meanwhile, darker brown tones which used to have classic connotations with stately pieces now lean towards more retro or mid-century style prioritising clean, functional design with lots of natural accents. Brown is also an ideal colour pick for your kitchen-diner if you’re inspired by the rise of the cafecore trend where you recreate the look and feel of your favourite coffee bar.
Texture is a key part of bringing this trend to life. Pick natural textures that ground the room and make the space feel cosy through furniture, flooring or on the walls. With brown interiors having their roots in retro style it’s only natural that we
gravitate to wooden textures and soft upholstery like faux leather, cord fabrics and boucle. It also provides the ideal backdrop for accessorising with natural textures like pampas grass that add bits of fluff to your room for a hint of boho style.”

How to Make a Roll Top Bath Work in Your Home
Are you looking to add instant glamour to your bathroom? Or perhaps you’re keen to create a relaxed, tranquil space for your evening soak.
Whatever style you’d like to achieve in your bathroom, a roll top bath offers endless possibilities to transform your space and create a haven in your home.
The roll top bath is a design that lots of people gravitate towards when they are choosing to redesign their bathroom. It’s a classic style, looks good in most spaces and also creates a centrepiece in your room. In fact, a roll top bath is practically a design element all on its own, grounding your room and creating
a focal point. Consider choosing a roll top bath in an eye-catching colour and make a statement with red, duck egg blue or pale pink. Bright colours will look stylish alongside a monochromatic themed bathroom, so consider a tiled black and white floor and accessories, ensuring that your roll top bath takes centre stage.
If you prefer to keep things simple, opt for a white tub with clean floors and walls and create an oasis with potted
greenery that can be placed on the floor around your bath. Draw the eye to your bath by keeping your accessories nearby. For example, you could hang a mirror or piece of art directly behind the bath and arrange towels on the floor near to the foot of the tub. However you choose to decorate, position or incorporate a roll top bath into your home, embrace its oldfashioned appeal and use it to create a bathroom you can’t want to spend time in.

Showhome style inspires homeowner to get into decorating
A mother of four and passionate interior design enthusiast has found inspiration personalising her new home and garden after purchasing a property at Bilsthorpe Chase from Nottinghamshire housebuilder, Harron Homes.
Sallyann Ainley, 58, moved from her family house in Mapperley to a fourbedroom Hambleton home at Bilsthorpe Chase in Bilsthorpe, Newark, shortly after her youngest child left for university. Though she had previously worked as a daycare nurse, a teaching assistant, and an accountant, Sallyann was recently forced into unemployment by a severe illness. Having recovered, she now cares for her mother, who lives only 20 minutes away from Sallyann’s new home.
Because of her carer responsibilities, Sallyann wanted a home that she could move into without hassle. At the same time, now no longer in employment, she wanted a home where she could embark on a small redecoration project. The fourbedroom Hambleton offered her a blank canvas she could make her own, and she moved in straight away.
“The size of the house compared to the price was incredible,” added Sallyann. “I opted for Harron because the aesthetic finish of their homes really is just a cut above. They evidently take so much care over the design of their properties. I have gotten such great value for my money here while still being able to live in a home with a lot of stylistic flair.
“What drew me to Harron is how customisable the homes are. They have this excellent finish, but there is so much scope to make the home your own, and you can get really creative with that.”
After recreating the home’s interior décor to give it her unique twist, Sallyann brought in some of her own DIY furniture, which she upholstered to fit Harron’s modern, deluxe style.
“There is a lot of sturdy, great-quality furniture out there which just needs a bit of care. You can buy old furniture, often for a cheap price from a local antique store, take it home, strip it, sand it, fix it up, add new handles, a bit of paint, and there you go. I’ve made sure to upholster the new purchases in a way that blends in with Harron’s signature style.
“My grandmother was a dressmaker and upholsterer by trade,” said Sallyann. “So I learnt the same skills by watching and imitating her. I had my first unofficial solo project at age 14, when I sanded
and stripped my bedroom floor and re-decorated the entire room!”
From childhood onwards, Sallyann has spent her life honing her skills. “When I was a young mother, I would perform fix-up jobs on friends’ and neighbours’ old furniture to earn a bit of extra cash in aid of my growing family. The Harron Home didn’t require a complete overhaul, because the design is already so appealing, but it was great for me to be able to add my own unique spin on it.”
“Since I’m out of work for the time being, and since my kids have now all left home, decorating my home has been something of a personal project for me. As soon as I moved in, I got started. After that, I set to work on the garden, which I’ve just completed! This whole experience has really inspired me to lean into my interests, and I am now looking to set up my own independent small business to inspire other homeowners. I want to help unlock their creativity and bring their visions to life for their own homes and gardens.”
Bilsthorpe Chase enjoys an enviable location in the countryside with green fields on all sides and large areas of natural beauty like Sherwood Pines only a stone’s throw away.
“Harron always tend to find nice
areas, and they don’t make their developments too massive, so it’s a Goldilocks fit for me. The village of Bilsthorpe is a short walk away. I can take an amble down the road, and I’m soon met with the comforts of urban living –restaurants, gyms, supermarkets – you name it. Up the road there’s a lovely farm shop which I can walk to in just under 15 minutes.
“At the same time, the development is placed at a snug distance from built-up areas, so you still get the perks of rural living. It’s really the best of both worlds.”
Natalie Griffiths, Sales and Marketing Director for Harron Homes North Midlands, said: “The aesthetic finish of our homes is something we are known for, and we are always proud to provide our customers with homes that combine expert design with comfort and convenience.
“But a home is also something to make your own, which is exactly what Sallyann has done here. It is brilliant to see her get stuck in and put her personal stylistic stamp on the place.”
Bilsthorpe Chase is a selection of two, three, four, and five-bedroom homes situated in the charming village of Bilsthorpe, Newark. With prices starting from as low as £199,995, customers looking to get on the property ladder or those keen to move house can get in touch with the sales team on 01623 549018.

Helping Your Children Climb The Property Ladder
Zoe Till from Nelsons discusses factors to consider before making such a significant financial decision
Gift or loan?
Firstly, decide whether the money you provide will be a gift or a loan. If it’s a gift, you will not have any right to get the money back. If it’s a loan, consider setting up a formal agreement to outline repayment terms. This ensures there is no ambiguity about the expectations on both sides.
Inheritance Tax (IHT) considerations
Helping your child buy a home can reduce your estate for Inheritance Tax (IHT) purposes. However, remember that gifts may only be exempt from IHT if you live for seven years after making the gift.
Lump sum or regular gifts?
A lump sum can help cover a significant portion of the purchase, but regular gifts from surplus income can provide a steady income stream to help towards the mortgage payments. This can also remove value from your estate quicker without waiting 7 years.
Protecting family wealth
If your child is married or cohabiting, consider advising them to seek advice on a pre or postnuptial agreement, or a cohabitation agreement. This can help protect your family wealth in case the relationship ends ensuring your children’s financial interests are protected too.
Impact on parents’ life
Before giving money away, consider how it will impact your life. Will you have enough money to live on? If you’re considering making pension withdrawals, remember to consider the tax consequences.
Tax consequences
Large lump sums from pensions could push you into a higher tax bracket or cause you to lose your personal allowance. Key tax implications:
• Tax-free lump sum: You can usually take up to 25% of the amount built up in any pension as a tax-free lump sum. The maximum tax-free amount is £268,2751.
• Remaining amount: After taking the tax-free portion, the remaining amount is subject to tax. For example, if your pension is worth £60,000 and you take £15,000 tax-free, the provider will tax the remaining £45,000.
• Higher rate tax: If you take a large amount from your pension, you might owe Income Tax at a higher rate.
Pension considerations
Pensions are generally free from IHT, so it might be more suitable to leave pension assets untouched and consider gifting other assets instead. This will still allow you to help your children, while also considering tax efficiency.
Lifetime ISA
Encouraging children to save into a Lifetime ISA (LISA) has several benefits:
• Bonus: allows individuals aged 18-39 to save up to £4,000 annually. The Government adds a 25% bonus on top, potentially giving them £1,000 of free cash each year.
• Tax-free interest: The interest earned within a LISA is tax-free
• First home purchase: Children can use the LISA savings (after having the account open for a year) towards their first home deposit, helping them step onto the property ladder.
• Retirement savings: If not used for a home, the LISA continues to grow for retirement. It’s a long-term investment.
As for parents giving money to their children to put into the LISA:
• It’s a great way to help them save for a home or retirement.
• It fosters a savings mentality and financial responsibility.
Comment
Helping your children onto the property ladder can be a rewarding experience, but it’s essential to consider all the implications. Always seek professional advice to ensure you make the best decision for your family’s financial future.

get your car ready for autumn and winter
As the seasons change, preparing your car for autumn and winter is essential to ensure safety and reliability on the road. Here’s a comprehensive guide to getting your vehicle ready for the colder months:
Check Your Tyres
Tread Depth: As roads become slick with rain, ice, or snow, having adequate tread depth is crucial. Tyres should have at least 3mm of tread depth for winter driving.
Winter Tyres: Consider switching to winter tyres if you live in an area prone to heavy snowfall or ice. These tyres provide better grip in cold conditions.
Tyre Pressure: Cold weather can reduce tyre pressure, so check and adjust it regularly to maintain optimal performance and fuel efficiency.
Inspect the Battery
Battery Health: Cold temperatures can reduce a battery's effectiveness. Have your battery tested to ensure it’s holding a charge and has no corrosion on the terminals.
Replacement: If your battery is more than three years old or showing signs of weakness, consider replacing it before winter.
Top Up Fluids
Antifreeze/Coolant: Ensure your car has the correct mix of antifreeze and water to prevent the engine from freezing.
Windshield Washer Fluid: Use a winter formula windshield washer fluid that won’t freeze in cold temperatures.
Oil Change: Consider using a winter-grade oil that flows better in cold weather, making it easier for your engine to start.
Check Wiper Blades and Defrosters
Wiper Blades: Replace old or worn-out wiper blades to maintain visibility during rain and snow.
Defrosters: Ensure your front and rear defrosters are functioning properly to prevent windows from fogging or icing up.
Prepare an Emergency Kit
Summer heat can be harsh on your car battery. Essentials: Keep an emergency kit in your car with items such as blankets, a
flashlight, extra batteries, a first-aid kit, nonperishable snacks, and bottled water.
Tools: Include a snow shovel, ice scraper, jumper cables, and a tire pressure gauge.
Inspect Lights and Brakes
Lights: Check that all headlights, brake lights, and indicators are working properly. Replace any burned-out bulbs.
Brakes: Have your brakes inspected to ensure they are in good condition, as stopping distances can increase on icy roads.
By following these steps, you’ll help ensure your car is ready to handle the challenges of autumn and winter!
A Beautiful Resting Place
Bereavement can leave people feeling sad, lost, and sometimes confused, but an appropriate funeral and memorial can bring great comfort and peace. At the Willows Natural Burial Ground, the tranquil surroundings of wildflower meadows, woodland, and ponds can provide great solace for those left behind as they remember the person or people they have lost.
Th e Willows is a 10-acre family-owned natural burial site near South Croxton, with commanding views of the Charnwood countryside, where people can be buried in hand dug graves in eco-friendly coffins or caskets, made of biodegradable materials such as cardboard, willow, wool or banana leaf to name a few. Conversely, their ashes can be buried or sub-surface scattered, either in bio-degradable urns or simply poured into or onto the ground.
A range of commemorative memorials are available, made of natural materials such as Welsh slate, and wood, while many people choose to remember their loved ones by planting a tree or native rose bush.
Owners Chris and Jenny Scroby and their family, have been transforming the bare fields with extensive tree and bulb planting since
opening in 2011, inviting families of the buried or prepurchased plots, to join in at planting weekends. They recently purchased another 3,750 native British bluebell, snowdrop and daffodil bulbs, whilst simultaneously raising money for local charities.
The Willows caters for people of all faiths or no faith. The site can accommodate graveside funerals or act solely as a burial site after a service elsewhere. If families do have a service on site, their fee includes provision of a small pop-up shelter, with limited seating and soft drinks for those attending.
The natural burial option is a cost-effective alternative to a traditional cemetery burial or cremation.
Chris and Jenny work with the family’s chosen funeral directors to ensure everything goes smoothly, whilst respecting the parameters set out to protect and promote the site as a natural, wildlife friendly environment.
Chris says: “We’re very pleased with our progress, which we see as our contribution in giving something back to nature and the environment.”

Skydive for Veteran’s Cancer Treatment
A care home manager from Nottingham has faced her fears to complete a skydive raising cash towards the cost of overseas cancer treatment for an RAF veteran.
Cheered on by residents from the home who had come along to watch, manager at The Grand Care Centre in West Bridgford Tracy Johnston successfully undertook the tandem jump from 14,000ft at Langar Airfield in Nottingham, raising more than £900 towards the cost of life-extending cancer treatment in Germany for
RAF veteran Ian Trushell.
A family friend of the JohnstonMooneys, 49-yearold Ian served in the Royal Air Force for 24 years and was most recently medically discharged to focus on his battle with Stage IV bowl cancer, also onboarding and fighting metastasis in the lung and liver areas.
With treatment for Ian’s specific condition limited in the UK, the family became aware of medical advancements in Germany that could address his liver mets and immediately set about fundraising to help towards the costly treatment. Thanks to other fundraising, Ian has already been to Germany for initial consultations and the results of the trials have been positive showing reductions in the liver metastasis.
“I had been saying for a while that I would do a skydive to celebrate my 50th birthday and tick it off my bucket list,” said Tracy, who lives in Lincoln next to RAF Waddington, “And when we heard about Ian’s battle with
bowl cancer and the opportunity for treatment abroad my mind was made up. So close to all of our hearts, I was determined to raise as much as I can to help extend Ian’s life and enable him to spend more time with his young family.
“It was wonderful to have so many residents and the staff from The Grand come along to support me, including 96-year-old Beryl who is no stranger to a skydive completing one herself when she was younger.”
Sadly Ian was unable to attend the skydive event as he was in Germany for his fourth treatment. He said: “'Tracy is incredibly brave. I couldn’t do a skydive as I have a fear of heights despite 24 years in the RAF!”
Commissioning director at New Care, Dawn Collett, added: “We are so incredibly proud of Tracy for the skydive and also to the team at The Grand for going along to support her and wish Ian the very best with his treatment in Germany.”

Nottinghamshire charity celebrates share of £1million fund
A heart disease charity in Nottinghamshire has received a £1,000 funding boost as part of Benefact Group’s Movement for Good Awards to support its vital work. Societi Foundation is the UK Foundation for Kawasaki Disease, the leading cause of acquired heart disease in children.
Delayed treatment of Kawasaki Disease is shown to greatly increase the risk of heart damage in affected children and poor levels of awareness contribute significantly to these delays.
The £1,000 donation made as part of the Movement for Good Awards will allow Societi Foundation to produce a children’s story book for families affected by Kawasaki Disease so that parents can more easily explain to their child and their siblings about the disease in a more child friendly format. The donation will enable the charity to print and distribute 200 copies of the book to families and to hospitals throughout the UK.
Rachel McCormack, founder of Societi has spoken out following the overwhelming support from the public, “We are thrilled to have received a donation from Movement for Good. We know that
early diagnosis and rapid treatment are the single biggest things we can do right now to change outcomes for children in the UK. To achieve this, we need more people to know Kawasaki Disease and for doctors to THINK Kawasaki Disease as a possible diagnosis in any child with a persistent, unexplained high fever. As a small charity, this donation will go such a long way to power our work to protect children’s hearts. We are very grateful indeed for your support.”
Benefact Group’s Movement for Good Awards is giving away over £1million to charities across the year and invites members of the public to nominate causes close to their hearts. 150 awards of £1,000 have been donated to charities across the UK and Ireland. Further winners will be revealed later in the year and Nottinghamshire residents are encouraged to keep nominating by visiting the website.
Benefact Group has donated over £200million to charitable causes since 2014 and last year was recognised as the third biggest corporate giver in the UK1. The organisation aims to reach £250million in donations by 2025.
Movement for Good is funded by EIO plc, part of the Benefact Group.
