Yes, that’s right ladies and gentlemen, Nottingham’s Goose Fair returns to the pretty green plains of the Forest Recreation Ground this October. With a history spanning over 700 years, Goose Fair is steeped in fascinating stories. Here are some intriguing historical tidbits to get you excited for its return!

First up… What the duck has it got to do with geese?

Today, the only goose you’ll see at the fair is Goosey - the two-metre timber statue that is placed on what is known as ‘Goose Fair Roundabout’ ahead of the big event. However, when the event first started, geese did used to be all the rage at Goose Fair. Hence the name. In centuries past, traders from as far as Lincoln, Cambridge and Norfolk would walk their geese all the way to Nottingham’s famous market, just in time for the Michaelmas celebrations marking the end of harvest. As many as 20,000 geese were recorded making their way through the south of the city, waddling through Hockley in the lead-up to the fair. This annual spectacle is what gave the street its name - Goosegate.

The Nottingham Cheese Riots

Along with the geese, all manner of other livestock, food, and particularly cheese, would be sold at the fair as people stocked up their pantries for the winter months ahead. You can already imagine the ruckus of a busy market square full of farmyard animals,

but when the Cheese Riots hit in 1766, absolute pandemonium was to break loose. Nottingham had just been through a momentous building boom as more and more people headed to the city to find work. At the same time, food prices had risen sharply. While the day went by without much bother, the early evening saw an argument break out between a trader and some lads who were most probably bickering over the newly increased prices. A full-scale riot quickly erupted, with great wheels of cheese rolled away by thieving fairgoers leaving debrie everywhere. Two men were arrested, another is said to have died - but perhaps the most peculiar (and amusing) part of the tale is the fate of the Mayor. After trying to restore order, he attempted to flee the chaos, only to be knocked down by a runaway wheel of cheese. Have a think about that

Awesome attractions at Goose Fair

Before the advent of planes, trains and automobiles it was much rarer for people to travel and experience new things, so the excitement was high when Goose Fair rolled in to town. Along with travelling merchants bringing along their wares, more unusual side shows were introduced to entertain the masses. Introducing the wonders of the world to the people of Nottingham, Bostock and Wombwell’s Menagerie existed between 1805 all the way until the 1930s. This wild and wonderful show featured exotic never-seen-before creatures such as elephants, lions and tigers, and the legendary Madame Tussaud even showcased her eerily realistic wax sculptures in both 1819 and 1829. Over the years, other traditional fairground attractions such as freak shows came into vogue, but the popularity of this kind of ‘entertainment’ declined after the 1950s due to the prevalence of television and advancements in fairground ride machinery.

Rip-roaring rides

quite the polarising effect. While some people adore being swung upside down and made dizzy as a spinning top, others prefer to keep their feet on the ground, admire the pretty lights and hold everyone’s bags. Before the days of neon lights and laser shows, most rides at the fair were steampowered. The jittery, clanking Brooklyn Cake Walk was first introduced in 1905 - and it still makes an appearance today! Whilst modest by today’s thrillride standards, the Cake Walk endures, preserving the vintage charm we continue to love about traditional funfairs.

the most infamous Goose Fair goodie is the Cock on a Stick... This hard boiled lollipop is shaped like a cockerel and tends to bring a chuckle to the fairgoers. But did you know - this comical candy is not merely a mass-produced gimmick. The manufacturer of the Cock on a Stick is in fact a local chap who has been making them by hand for over 70 years after receiving the secret recipe from his grandfather! If that hasn’t whet your appetite and got you eager to come and enjoy the fun of the fair, we’re not sure what will!

Delicious delicacies

Alongside classic fairground sweet treats like candyfloss, brandy snaps, warm doughnuts and toffee apples, Goose Fair has developed its own unique flavour over the centuries. A comforting pot of mushy peas is sure to warm your cockles as you wander around the fairground just don’t forget to ask for a dollop of mint sauce. It’s a proper Nottingham tradition! No doubt

Celebrating Two Decades of DIY Spirit

A full orchestra in an historic church, a huge carnival parade, drag shows, line dancing flashmobs and a showcase of Nottingham’s grassroots music scene are set to make a special 20th Hockley Hustle. The music and arts charity festival takes place on Sunday 25 October 2026 with 500 acts across 50 bars, pubs, cinemas, chapels and galleries spread around Nottingham's independent quarter. Every October, thousands of people fill the streets and venues of Hockley and Sneinton to enjoy the all day festival. From 70 piece orchestras with world class vocalists to tiny little rooms packed out with people listening to an acoustic guitar, to streets full of Samba and silent discos, to choirs on Broadway's steps and beatbox battles in Bodega, Hockley Hustle brings together communities. As well as championing grassroots artists, local promoters and independent venues, Hockley Hustle has raised £250,000 for 27 local charities, from mental health organisations and refugee support groups to hospices and youth services. This year, the festival is asking everyone to help them raise £20,000 to mark the 20th milestone and support six local charities. Hockley Hustle was founded in 2006 as part of Oxjam, the UK-wide series of DIY music events raising money for Oxfam. The first edition involved just seven venues and a budget of £1,000. It soon outgrew its beginnings to become a full fledged festival in its own right, and began

raising money for local charities. Founder Adam Pickering, said: “It was impossible to imagine 20 years ago that Hockley Hustle would still be going now. When 18-year-old me went running around Nottingham asking promoters (like our now-Director Tommy Farmyard) to host venues to raise money for Oxfam, I hadn't even been alive that long. We knew the music scene was brilliant and full of love, Drop in the Ocean had already happened - and it only ever took someone to say 'let's throw a party for a good cause' for everyone to get together. Part of what's made it work for so long is the Hockley area itself, which has all the Goldilocks energy for a festival - the mix of creativity, independent venues, a neighbourhood feel.” Ben Trekkah, artist/promoter/ producer, said: “Hockley Hustle is our annual celebration of the creativity that bursts out of our great City. The one day in the year where all of Nottingham’s talent is out in unity together. The festival is so important in promoting the diverse offer of the City, building artists networks and following and as a general celebration of Nottinghamness. Long may it live Happy 20th Birthday Hustle! The festival has become one of the most important platforms for developing talent, offering emerging promoters a mentorship scheme and running industry days.

Step N Groove will be leading an attempt for the world's biggest R&B Line Dancing flashmob, with tutorials on Broad Street before it all begins. It’s not just all on Sunday, there’s also a warm up show on Saturday October 24 from Channel One Sound System in collaboration with Our Yard + Brickworks, and an exhibition celebrating the festival from the very beginning will be running all week at Broadway Cinema. The venue has been the main Hustle hub for many years. Hockley Hustle is supported by Arts Council England, Confetti Institute of Creative Technologies, It’s in Nottingham and Gigantic.

Theatre Royal Nottingham and pantomime producer Crossroads Pantomimes have revealed the full star-studded cast for this year’s spectacular production of Jack and the Beanstalk,

Running from Saturday 28 November 2026 to Sunday 3 January 2027, this year’s giant pantomime will star Rob Rinder as The Spirit of the Beans, alongside stage and screen favourite Samantha Womack as Mrs Blunderbore, returning Nottingham favourite Neil Hurst as Simon Trot, acclaimed cabaret performer Mary Mac as Dame Trot and musical theatre stars Mia Kobayashi as Princess Jill and Matthew Croke as Jack. Rob Rinder MBE is a barrister, broadcaster and Sunday Times bestselling author. Rob’s participation in Who Do You Think You Are? retraced the story of his Holocaust survivor grandfather and received a BAFTA. The BBC series he presented, My Family, The Holocaust, and Me, aired to critical acclaim and in 2020, Rob was awarded an MBE for his services to Holocaust education. Rob has since gone on to curate and present a broad range of widely viewed and notable documentaries. In 2024, Rob paired up with Rylan to present the docuseries Rob & Rylan’s Grand Tour for BBC Two, with the hugely popular series earning the duo a BAFTA. In 2025, the highly anticipated follow-up series Rob and Rylan’s Passage to India aired, receiving widespread recognition.

Called to the bar in 2001, Rob went on to specialise in cases involving murder and financial crime, while working in media to make law more accessible. Best known for his TV roles in The Syndicate and Fresh Meat, Neil also co-hosted ITV’s All-Star Family Fortunes, appeared in BBC’s The ABC Murders and has featured in family favourites such as Coronation Street, All Creatures Great and Small and Casualty. Before appearing in Nottingham last Christmas, Neil was the resident panto comic at Hull New Theatre, as well as touring the UK in musicals including The Full Monty and Hairspray!

Mary Mac, who stars as Dame Trot, is one of the UK's busiest and best-loved cabaret performers. Known for her quick wit, powerful vocals and crowdpleasing performances, she regularly entertains audiences in theatres, cabaret venues and aboard cruise ships around the world. Her stage credits include Everybody's Talking About Jamie (UK tour) and La Cage Aux Folles (Regent's Park Open Air Theatre), while she recently concluded an extraordinary 12-year run as resident Dame at the Royal Spa Centre, Leamington Spa. Mary has also toured the UK and Europe alongside drag superstar Bianca Del Rio and is a firm favourite with audiences wherever she performs. A former partner still refuses to let go of the past, still believing that there could a chance of a reconciliation.

You are a private person, yet sometimes you are not as discreet as is needed. Gossip and speculation is rife because everyone knows your business, especially on social media. A battle of wills taking place between you and a partner will have its consequences. Certain people will expect you to drop everything and spend more time with them, but you prefer to see them in small doses. A change of direction is on the horizon regarding your career.

A friendship or business partnership could reach a milestone. Changes are in the air as decisions must be made. Rudy’s Pizza Nottingham follows timehonoured Neapolitan methods, with a focus on simplicity and consistency. Since reviewing Baba Dough I wanted to explore other pizza options, Slice and Brew is on my list but a dinner with friends in February proved the perfect occasion to try Rudy’s. It was the first sunny day of the year and in the afternoon you barely needed a jacket, fast forward to early evening it was quickly getting colder. Nottingham City Centre didn’t seem to have got the memo though – arriving at 19.15 parts of town were a bit like a zoo. If zoo’s are full of drunk, half naked people. Rudy’s was a slice of the city in restaurant form, busy, bustling, couples, friends, families, casual diners and one customer in a leather jumpsuit. The diversity of customers and tables had an energy you don’t get in more expensive restaurants and should be celebrated. The pizzeria is in the home of the old French Connection shop – a grand structure

on a street that would rival Manchester and London for beautiful buildings neighbouring the equally handsome Delilah Fine Foods (a deli which the city should NEVER let close). Despite the high ceilings and massive space the restaurant was warm, welcoming and not ear bleedingly noisy (cough, cough Cosy Club). The menu is a tight selection of Starters (mainly antipasti), Pizza and desserts. You can have a salad or a dip but it reminded me of Baba Dough in its concise focus so I was excited. To start we ordered the ‘Campana’ between 4 of us and I couldn’t resist ordering the ‘Bowl of Salted Crisps’. The Campana was beautifully presented and the meats and cheese were full of flavour. They weren’t fridge cold and the bread had been toasted

I like eating out, trying new restaurants and being on the receiving end of great hospitality. I am a mum with 2 children (one baby, one 9 year old) so I include how the places I visit work for families. I have worked in bars, cafes, restaurants and pubs for most of my life. Good places should be supported, celebrated and shared.

and oiled to add to the flavour. I would go back for it. My choice…. was a bowl of crisps, I am not sure what I expected but when it arrived I felt disappointed. I think it might have been because I expected there to be something ‘special’ about them but it looked like someone had upended a bag of Walkers (that had been in a sweaty school bag all day) into a bowl. It definitely took the Ronseal approach so I clocked it up to experience.

Now for the pizza, the star of the show and a brief disclaimer before we continue. Rudy’s (like Pizzamisu) serve Neopolitan pizzas. Famous for charred spots of pillowy dough around the edge and a very thin centre. Neopolitan pizzas are definitely having a moment but I prefer a crisper base and more structural integrity so you can pick a slice up in one hand and eat it. That isn’t the case here – cutlery is needed. The pizzas arrived and there was that feeling again – underwhelm. The table buzzed with the excitement of food being delivered but on closer inspection everything was missing a bit of ‘care’. There were large parts of

the pizza without toppings and cheese. I don’t expect my pizza to look like an Asda ‘Build your own Vesuvius mountain of mozzarella and hotdog slices’ but I am not here for a game of ‘Hunt the topping’ either. The pizzas themselves tasted great, even more so when liberally covered in the hot honey and aioli we had ordered as sides. The bases had a deep flavour and were well seasoned and the toppings worked really well together even if they were a little stingy. The dough had the trademark black bubbles but none of the acrid burnt dough taste that can

sometimes come with them. We finished with some ice cream and a tiramisu which were functional. A plea to all makers of tiramisu – please god add more bloody marsala wine and coffee, without both it is just a crap jelly-less trifle. We left and walked up Victoria Street to get a taxi home, the earlier revellers were showing signs of fatigue as we passed a girl whose nipple was being covered by her friends hand as she wept in a doorway. I reminded myself that a bit of a care-less pizza was in no way the worse fate to suffer on a night out in Nottingham.

Eye-watering recipes for healthy eyes... Keeping our eyes healthy is important, especially as we age, but our eyesight is probably something we all take a little for granted. The sad truth is that globally around 250 million people suffer from varying degrees of vision loss (1) and although not every case is preventable, there are actions that can be taken to reduce the risk. Eating more watercress is one of them! Raw watercress contains many nutrients associated with eye health; it is rich in vitamin A (as ϐ – carotene) that contributes to the normal functioning of our eyes, and it’s rich in vitamin C which may protect against cataracts.(2) But watercress also contains the carotenoids, lutein and zeaxanthin, in fact, research at the University of Ulster showed that eating 85g of watercress daily for 8 weeks plasma lutein and P-carotene

increased significantly, with smokers increasing their intake by an incredible 100% (3). This is important because these carotenoids are linked to a lower risk of developing age-related macular degeneration and cataracts, and, pertinent for this day and age, they protect the eye against blue light emitted from our phones and computers which inhibits the production of melatonin and reduces both the quantity and quality of sleep. Carotenoids are antioxidants responsible for the vibrant colour of fruits and vegetables including the orange of carrots, sweet potato or pumpkin and the dark green of spinach, watercress or peas. Eating these carotenoidrich foods in conjunction with healthy fats increases their uptake into the body so using watercress in a homemade pesto with olive oil is a great pairing to achieve this!

Sweet Potato, Feta & Watercress Frittata

Prep time: 10 minutes | Cooking Time: 30 minutes Ingredients: • 6 eggs, beaten together • 1 large, sweet potato, diced • 1 red onion, chopped • 80g Watercress, roughly chopped • 100g Feta, diced • 2tsp thyme • Salt, pepper, oil Method: 1. Preheat the oven to 180 2. On a baking tray, toss the diced sweet potato in a little oil with salt and pepper and bake

for 15-20 minutes, until tender. 3. Meanwhile, in an ovenproof pan/skillet, fry the onions until soft. When the sweet potato is ready, add this to the pan along with the watercress and thyme and mix everything together. 4. Pour your egg mixture over the top before crumbling the feta in. 5. Bake in the oven for around 10 minutes but keep an eye on the egg. It should be firm and golden on top.

Prep time: 10 minutes Cooking Time: 10 minutes Ingredients: • 200g Dried Linguine • 130g Frozen Peas, defrosted • 50g Watercress • 50g Parmesan • 1 Clove Garlic • 20g Basil • 1 Lime, juice and zest • 60ml Olive Oil • 6 Spring Onions, finely chopped • Toasted Seeds to sprinkle Method: 1. Cook the pasta according to the pack instructions until al dente (usually a minute or two less than suggested) drain and reserve a ladle of cooking water. 2. For the pesto, add all the ingredients, aside from the spring onions to a food processor and pulse until combined, you may need a touch more oil. 3. Fold through the pasta, along with the spring onions and enough cooking water to make a silky coating. Serve immediately with some toasted seeds to top.

Pumpkin Risotto with Watercress Pesto (v) Prep time: 30 mins | Cooking Time: 30 mins Ingredients: • 1 small pumpkin or butternut squash • 200g Arborio risotto rice • 2 cloves garlic, finely chopped • 5 shallots, peeled and finely diced • 1 tbsp olive oil plus more for drizzling • 100ml white wine • 1 litre of hot vegetable stock • 35g watercress • Salt and pepper • 2 tbsp pumpkin seeds, toasted • 25g cold butter For the pesto: • 50g vegetarian parmesan • 50g pine nuts, toasted • 50g watercress • 75ml olive oil

Method: 1. Preheat the oven to 180˚C. Peel the pumpkin, remove the seeds and chop into 2cm cubes. Place half of the pumpkin onto an oven tray, drizzle with olive oil and season with salt and pepper before placing into the preheated oven for 25 minutes, or until the pumpkin is soft in the middle and starting to colour on the outside. 2. Put the remaining pumpkin into a medium sized saucepan and cover with cold water. Add a pinch of salt and bring to the boil, simmering for 15-20 minutes or until the

pumpkin is soft and cooked through. Drain and blend in a food processor until smooth. This pumpkin puree will be stirred through the risotto to give it a good colour and flavour. 3. Next make the pesto by blending together the parmesan, pine nuts and watercress before slowly adding the olive oil and seasoning to taste. 4. Take a large frying pan or wok and place on a medium heat. Add a tablespoon of olive oil and throw in the diced shallots and garlic along with a pinch of salt. Fry gently for a few minutes, being careful not to allow the shallots to colour or burn. Add in the risotto rice and continue to fry for a further few minutes before adding in the white wine. Reduce the heat to medium-low and stir the rice and shallot mixture until almost all the wine has been absorbed. 5. Use a ladle or small jug to pour one quarter of the vegetable stock into the pan and cook until the liquid has been absorbed, stirring frequently. Repeat until all the liquid has been used up which should take around 20 minutes. Check that the rice is cooked through and add a splash more water if necessary. 6.Finally stir in the watercress, pumpkin puree, diced roast pumpkin and cold butter then season to taste with salt and pepper. Spoon the risotto into four bowls, scatter over the pumpkins seeds and finally drizzle generously with watercress pesto. Serve and enjoy!

Inheritance Tax (IHT) is a tax charged on the value of an individual's estate when they die. The estate includes all assets owned by the deceased, including property, savings, investments and personal possessions, less any outstanding debts. In the UK, IHT is generally charged at 40% on the portion of an estate that exceeds the available tax-free allowances.

The Nil Rate Band

The starting point of most inheritance tax planning is the nil rate band. This allowance enables an individual to pass on up to £325,000 free from inheritance tax, regardless of who inherits the estate. If the value of an estate does not exceed the nil rate band, there will usually be no IHT to pay. Any value above this threshold may become taxable, subject to other reliefs and exemptions. For married couples and civil partners, the rules are particularly favourable. Where one spouse dies without fully using their nil rate band, the unused proportion can generally be transferred to the surviving spouse. As a result, a married couple or civil partners may be able to benefit from a combined nil rate band of up to £650,000 on the second death.

The Residence Nil Rate Band

In addition to the standard nil rate band, there is a further allowance known as the residence nil rate band. This currently provides an additional £175,000 per person and is designed to help families pass on the family home to future generations.

The allowance applies where a qualifying residential property is left to direct descendants, including children, stepchildren, adopted children and grandchildren. When available, the residence nil rate band is added to the standard nil rate band, increasing the amount that can pass free from inheritance tax. This means that an individual may be able to pass on up to £500,000 tax-free. For married couples and civil partners, any unused residence nil rate band can also be transferred, potentially increasing the combined allowance to £1 million where the relevant conditions are met.

The Impact of Large Estates

The residence nil rate band is subject to a tapering provision for larger estates. Where an estate exceeds £2 million, the allowance is reduced by £1 for every £2 above that threshold. This reduction can significantly affect inheritance tax planning, particularly for individuals with substantial property and investment assets. In some circumstances, the residence nil rate band may be lost entirely, leaving only the standard nil rate band available.

As autumn arrives, audiences can look forward to an action-packed month of entertainment, from legendary rock and pop anthems to razor-sharp comedy, dazzling drag, spectacular magic and family fun. Turn up the volume

Music fans are particularly well catered for this October, with a host of tribute acts and live concert experiences celebrating some of the biggest names in music history. The month gets into full swing on Wednesday 7 October with Rave On: The 50s & 60s Experience, taking audiences on a nostalgic trip through the biggest hits of rock 'n' roll's golden era. Fleetwood Mac fans can experience the magic of the legendary band with Dreams of Fleetwood Mac on Thursday 8 October, before Ultimate Classic Rock Show brings a powerhouse collection of rock anthems from across the decades on Friday 9 October. On Saturday 10 October, it's time to celebrate The Rocket Man himself with a spectacular tribute to the music, style and showmanship of Elton John. The rock continues with Steve Steinman's Anything For Love on Saturday 17 October, celebrating the legendary music of Meat Loaf, while Mercury brings Queen's greatest hits to the Palace on Friday 23 October. There’s the chance to spot red deer as you take in a 6 mile route, with views of Derbyshire’s Big Moor, or stroll for just over 2 miles and explore the ancient woodland of Padley Gorge.

Ilam Park and The White Peak, Peak District Explore landscape that’s been inspiring artists and poets for centuries. Whether it's a stroll by the River Manifold, a wander through ancient ravine woodlands or a hike over the hilltops, there are plenty of walks to be discovered when you explore the White Peak. There are glorious walks through the Manifold Valley, home to limestone crags and woodlands. Take a walk along the Manifold track through the historic Hamps valley. Or soak up iconic views of the famous Thorpe Cloud, from Ilam Park, where there are plenty of places to sit, play and walk the dog. Calke Abbey Autumn brings a blaze of colour and sound to Calke Abbey. Stroll through Serpentine Wood and the historic Lime Avenue as the trees turn amber and gold, or rustle through leaves on the

Tramway Trail. In the Deer Park, listen for the roar of rutting stags and watch for clashing antlers during this spectacular seasonal display. Dogs are welcome too — don’t forget to stamp their Pooch Passport on your visit. Join the ranger team for a guided ‘Wonders of the Woodland’ walk (1 October – prebooking online is essential) to discover some of the best fruit and fungi that the season has to offer.

Kedleston Hall Whether walking beneath canopies of ancient trees, uncovering lakeside paths lined colour, or spotting red kites, buzzards or even a deer, when autumn arrives Kedleston Hall, the season brings new ways to experience nature at one of the most scenic times of the year. This autumn, across Kedleston's historic parkland, experience North Park and Haywood through the eyes of a ranger during a hosted 'Autumn Walk'. Along accessible parkland trails guided by ranger expertise, uncover conservation projects and explore how craft and the natural world go hand in hand. Learn about wild medicine, food foraging, and take a deeper delve into tree identification besides veteran trees such as beech, oak and horse chestnut. With performances at 11am and 1.30pm, this imaginative and beautifully crafted production offers young audiences a captivating adventure that explores nature, imagination and our relationship with the natural world. Created for children aged 5 to 8, The Truth About Trees follows eight-year-old Alfie, who thinks his Grandpa’s stories about trees are complete nonsense. That is, until the trees themselves seem to have something to say. When Alfie begins to listen and discovers clues hidden in the forest, he realises that he may be the only one who can hear what the trees are trying to tell him. Soon, he must spring into action to protect the trees and all the creatures that call them home. Blending live performance, storytelling, impressive puppetry, shadow play and an original acoustic soundtrack, The Truth About Trees creates a world where ordinary things can become extraordinary and

where a child’s imagination can make a difference. The production has been praised for delivering its environmental message in a gentle and engaging way, with Everything Theatre describing it as a “pitch-perfect, beautifully scripted and performed adventure” that encourages children to recognise our responsibilities towards the natural world. The Edinburgh Reporter also praised the show’s approach, noting that its “eco message” never gets in the way of the story. While aimed particularly at children aged 5 to 8, the production has also been praised for its appeal to adults, offering families an opportunity to experience theatre together while gently encouraging everyone to look at nature from a different perspective. Four days of intensive steam action will see an impressive line-up of home fleet and visiting locomotives take to the tracks at Great Central Railway’s annual Autumn Steam Gala from 1 – 4 October. The Great Central Railway (GCR) is preparing for four days of steam-filled action as its annual Autumn Steam Gala returns with a special ‘Little & Large Gala’ theme, celebrating the remarkable variety of steam locomotives – from some of the smallest engines in operation to larger and more powerful machines. The event will feature an intensive timetable of passenger, goods and double-headed trains, offering visitors the chance to see an impressive selection of locomotives from different eras and industries in operation on the UK’s only double-track main line heritage railway. Three visiting locomotives are set to join the Great Central Railway’s home fleet, subject to availability. Among them will be GWR Saddle Tank No. 813, appearing with thanks to the Severn Valley Railway and the GWR 813 Preservation Fund. Built by Hudswell Clarke in 1900 for the Port Talbot Railway, the diminutive locomotive is renowned as one of the smallest engines operating on the Severn Valley Railway, making it a perfect fit for this year’s ‘Little & Large’

theme. Also making the journey to the GCR will be No. 7232 Sentinel ‘Ann’, appearing with thanks to Keighley & Worth Valley Railway, Callum Porter and Chris Boocock. Built by Sentinel in Shrewsbury in 1927, the locomotive showcases the innovative engineering of a company better known for its steam-powered road vehicles, providing a fascinating contrast to the larger locomotives appearing at the Gala. LMS 16440 is due to appear thanks to Midland Railway Trust Ltd, subject to availability following repairs. The LMS 3F locomotive was built in 1926 by the North British Locomotive Company in Glasgow, adding another distinctive chapter to the Gala’s celebration of steam engineering. Alongside the visiting engines, the GCR’s home fleet will be out in force throughout the event, with an intensive programme designed to provide plenty of opportunities to see locomotives in action – including passenger, goods and double-headed workings. Jack Nicholson’s unforgettable performance makes this one a film that is difficult to forget. If vampires are more your thing, Dracula (1958) brings classic gothic horror to the screen. Christopher Lee’s portrayal of the legendary Count Dracula helped establish one of horror cinema’s most iconic versions of the character. And who could forget Halloween (1978)? John Carpenter’s chilling tale introduced Michael Myers and helped define the modern slasher genre. Its simple storyline, eerie soundtrack and almost unstoppable villain prove that sometimes what you don’t see can be far more frightening. The beauty of these classics is that they don’t need constant blood and gore to frighten us. They rely on suspense, shadows, silence and the power of our imagination.

Belvoir Castle's Halloween trail through the Gardens is getting a hands-on finish this year, with a new run of craft sessions launching in the Retail Village at the point where the trail concludes. The adventure starts well before that, though. Across Belvoir's adventure playground, spell ingredients have been hidden among the climbing frames and walkways, setting children the task of tracking them all down to brew a countercurse. It's a proper piece of Halloween theatre rather than a simple trail marker hunt - every child who completes it earns the official title of Belvoir Castle Curse Breaker, along with a treat to mark the achievement. That sense of quest and reward carries the story from the Adventure Playground to the Animal Park and Retail Village, where visitors follow the seasonal trail through to its conclusion. Visitors following the seasonal trail arrive, story complete, in the Retail Village - and it's here that the estate has added a programme of Halloween-themed craft activities, giving families a tactile way to round off their visit. Rather than the trail simply ending, the crafts extend it: children can create their own take-home pieces inspired by the characters with the

helpful hands of the Belvoir Witches. The sessions are priced at £4.50 and have been designed with flexibility in mind. They work as a natural add-on for anyone already visiting the Adventure Playground for the trail, but they also stand alone - a shorter, self-contained activity for families who want a Halloween outing without committing to the full walk. The tradition of carving pumpkins actually began long before pumpkins became the Halloween decoration we know and love today. Its roots can be traced back to an old Irish legend about a man called Stingy Jack, who was said to have tricked the Devil. According to the story, Jack was condemned to wander in darkness, carrying a burning coal inside a hollowed-out turnip to light his way.

People in Ireland and Scotland began creating their own lanterns from vegetables such as turnips and potatoes, carving frightening faces into them. From classic grinning faces to terrifying monsters, no two pumpkins are quite the same.

Fright Night Finger Food

Roasted Cauliflower Brain with Green Slime Hummus and Dead Man’s Fingers

Ingredients:

• 1 whole cauliflower • 2 tbsp olive oil • 150ml white wine • Salt and pepper • 3 tbsp tomato ketchup

For the dead man’s fingers:

• 1/2 a loaf of thin-sliced white bread, crusts removed • Soft butter or margarine • 150g cream cheese • 50g whole almonds

Method:

1. Preheat oven to 150°C. Trim the leaves from the cauliflower and cut its base flat so that it sits upright. Rub all over with olive oil. Place the cauliflower into an

ovenproof casserole dish and pour over the white wine. Cover tightly with foil and bake for 1.5 hours. Check after 1 hour and brush on more oil if cauliflower seems dry. After the time is up, remove from the oven and insert a long knife into the centre of the cauliflower, ensuring that it is cooked all the way through. Leave to cool. 2. While the cauliflower is in the oven, make the hummus. Drain and rinse the chickpeas and place into a blender with the watercress, garlic, tahini, lemon juice, ground coriander and a pinch of salt. Blend until smooth, gradually adding olive oil. Taste and adjust seasoning and lemon juice if necessary. 3. To make the finger sandwiches, gently

flatten the slices of bread with a rolling pin to make them more pliable. Spread each slice with a little butter or margarine and some cream cheese. Roll up the sandwiches, then use a blunt knife to make indentations to form the knuckles. Trim one end of each roll into a V shape and use a little cream cheese to stick on an almond fingernail. 4. Once the cauliflower has cooled, use a sharp knife to carefully cut a hollow, creating a bowl in the top. Fill this with the green hummus, then mix the ketchup with a little warm water and drizzles over the sides of the cauliflower to look like blood. 5. Serve the cauliflower brain with the dead man’s fingers on the side for dipping.

As summer draws to a close, there is still plenty to look forward to, with an exciting programme continuing throughout the remainder of the season. After a brilliant hot summer, the National Tramway Museum has been basking in the sunshine alongside its visitors. From T. Rexes roaming the woodland to twisting and dancing in the street, families and visitors have enjoyed everything the museum has to offer, including heritage tram rides, historic streets, woodland walks, exhibitions, play areas and spectacular views across the Derwent Valley. As summer draws to a close, there is still plenty to look forward to, with an exciting programme continuing throughout the remainder of the season. On 27th September, the museum will welcome petrolheads for Bikes & BBQ, a new evening event as part of Crich Nights. All motorcycle riders and enthusiasts are welcome to join like-minded folk for an evening celebrating great bikes, great company and great food. The museum’s Red Lion Pub will also be open until 9pm, making it the perfect place to relax and soak up the atmosphere. With the historic street providing the backdrop to some great photo opportunities, it promises to be a great night for seasoned riders and anyone with an interest in motorcycles or our local pub! The postponed Teddy Bears’ Picnic, rained off on August Bank Holiday weekend, will return on 3rd and 4th October. Families can

follow the museum’s much-loved teddy bear trail, enjoy live entertainment and bring their favourite teddy along for a day of fun. The trail winds from Wakebridge to Derwent View, with plenty for adults to enjoy too, while children bringing a teddy can receive a free badge. There will also be a picnic show and live music for the whole family. As autumn arrives, Halloween Fun brings a spooky twist to the museum during Half Term, from Monday 26th to Friday 30th October. Families can enjoy Halloweenthemed activities and explore the museum, with the play park providing the perfect place to burn off some holiday energy! The season closes on Sunday 1st November, but reaches its atmospheric finale with our Special Event, Tramlight. As darkness falls on 7th and 8th November, the museum is transformed with illuminated trams and the historic street taking on a magical ambience. Wander along the woodland walk to discover the lantern trail and enjoy an enchanting experience that welcomes in winter. With heritage, family fun, motors and a little Halloween magic still to come, there’s plenty of reason to make another visit to the National Tramway Museum before the season draws to a close.

How to tell if your phone has spyware: Experts reveal the signs to look for Our phones contain almost every detail of our daily lives, from private messages and banking apps to photos and location history. But while most people worry about hackers stealing passwords, few know the signs that someone could already be secretly monitoring their device. Arqam Zafar, Marketing Director at AstrillVPN, says most people have no idea how easy it has become for someone else to gain access to their device, and the warning signs are not always what you would expect. Most people assume they would notice if someone was spying on their phone. In reality, the warning signs are often subtle and easily mistaken for an ageing device or a software glitch.

HOW CAN I TELL IF SOMEONE IS SNOOPING ON MY PHONE?

A phone that gets warm while it sits in your pocket, or burns through battery life for no clear reason, is one of the first signs that something has been planted on it. You might also spot alerts that seem entirely out of place, or find the device is sluggish when it powers on or off. These are the things people tend to dismiss as a glitch or an old battery, but taken together they can point to something running in the background that should not be there. A sudden spike in mobile data is worth paying attention to as well. Spyware has to send everything it hoovers up back to whoever planted it, and that extra traffic will quietly eat into your data allowance.

CAN SOMEONE INSTALL SPYWARE WITHOUT PHYSICALLY TOUCHING MY PHONE?

Spend a few minutes on Google and you will find no shortage of scammers claiming they can crack open someone's phone with nothing more than a number, usually for a few hundred pounds paid in crypto. Most of these are scams, but there are genuine threats too. A well-crafted text message with a suspect link is all it takes in some cases. The more sophisticated tools are designed to run silently in the background and they can be difficult to spot, but you can catch them if you know what to look for.

I THINK MY PHONE HAS BEEN COMPROMISED. NOW WHAT?

Spyware will very often disguise itself, hiding its icon from your home screen entirely, but it might still show up in the full apps list under an innocuous name that you do not recognise. Have a look through your installed apps and check for anything you did not put there yourself. If something looks odd, search for its name online. Nine times out of ten, you will find other people flagging the exact same app. For extra peace of mind, you can enlist the help of a reputable mobile security app, which will scan for known threats and flag anything unusual. If all else fails, it's recommended to do a full factory reset, changing every password you can think of, and switching on two-step verification across the board.

WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO STOP IT HAPPENING IN THE FIRST PLACE?

It is the boring stuff that saves you, frankly: a decent passcode, a fingerprint or face lock, and a bit of common sense about who picks up your phone when you leave the room. People leave their phones unlocked on restaurant tables, on desks, in bags, all the time. It takes a couple of minutes, that is all. A VPN is another layer worth adding because it encrypts your traffic, particularly on public Wi-Fi, and makes it far harder for anyone to snoop on what you are doing online.

Warm Up

Before you kick things off, it’s important to take steps to limit the risk of injury during your workout. Take at least 10 minutes prior to your workout to limber up; not only will it help you avoid pulling a muscle but by gently raising your heart rate you’ll ensure a more effective workout.

Run on the Spot

How to do it: pump your arms up and down in rhythm with your steps. How many/how long for: 3 mins

How to do it: stand with your back straight and bring your knee up one at a time to touch the opposite hand (keep your standing leg bent slightly). How many/how long for: 30 second reps; 3 sets (take 30 secs rest between each set)

Obsessions and Compulsions? Obsessions are unwanted and upsetting thoughts, images or urges that are usually about something bad happening, or thoughts that you might do something bad. Often people with obsessional thoughts know that the thoughts aren’t likely to happen, which can be frustrating for them. It can feel like their thoughts are taking over and controlling their behaviour. Compulsions are things that people do to try and stop the discomfort or stress linked to obsessional thoughts. A lot of people like to put their things in a particular place, keep things clean, or do things in a set order. This doesn’t mean that they have OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder).

What is obsessive compulsive disorder or OCD?

Someone with OCD might: • Feel like their mind is being invaded by horrible thoughts. • Feel scared, disgusted, tearful, guilty, doubtful, or depressed. • Have a strong urge to do something to stop the feelings. • Feel better for a while after rituals. • Need to ask people to check things for them or tell them that it’s okay. Obsessions and compulsions can come in all shapes and sizes. When people have had compulsions for a long time, they often find that they don’t have obsessional thoughts unless they try to not do their compulsions. Other people have very upsetting obsessional thoughts, but they don’t think that they have compulsions,

because their compulsions are thoughts and ways of thinking. Obsessional thoughts can be around things like danger, dirt and contamination, or worries around sexuality and religion. Some people feel guilty, or even ashamed of their thoughts, and they might find it very hard to tell you what they think about.

Ground-breaking men’s suicide prevention charity wins National Lottery funding to train 200 lifesaving ‘tough talkers’ across the UK.

A ground-breaking suicide prevention charity working in organisations across the UK to reach men before they hit crisis point has won National Lottery funding to train 200 more of its signature lifesaving ‘tough talkers’. Tough To Talk, founded by Nottingham-based Steve Whittle who himself tried to take his own life three times, will be using the funds to expand its innovative programme which has already reached thousands of employees around the UK. The charity’s distinctive ‘tough talkers’ are trained in a range of ways to create psychologically safer cultures in male-centric workspaces, with the aim of reaching men before they are in crisis. Already operating in companies in construction, the police, education and infrastructure, the charity has trained hundreds of tough talkers to recognise behavioural changes indicating someone may be silently struggling, giving them tools to start earlier conversations which provide vital support before it is too late. The charity has built a substantial community of trusted ‘tough talkers’ and provides them with ongoing support provided to help them continue their trail-blazing work. The aim is not just to train people to reach out to men but also to help organisations develop cultures where men do not feel they must struggle in silence. The charity works in malecentric workplaces, organisations where men may be less likely to seek help early, and charities supporting vulnerable men. Now thanks to Lottery funding Tough to Talk will be able to substantially expand the impact of its work which has seen it reach 1600 employees in one single organisation, where it still provides weekly sessions given a rating of 4.5 out of 5 by around 1,000

regular attendees. Jacqueline Gear, CEO of the family support charity Walk the Walk, is a ‘tough talker’ having undergone the training along with her team. She said the training had made a significant impact, with her own charity working with many people going through very difficult situations in their lives. Jacqueline said: “Some of the work we do at Walk the Walk is very high level. We work with families where there is a child on the edge of the care system, for example. Our work attracts people heading into crisis. “The tough talker training we received from Steve was brilliant. It’s very straight-talking and no nonsense. Steve has so much passion and he really cares about what he is doing.” Jacqueline said since receiving the training she was able to put it into practice within weeks, on one occasion intervening in a suicide crisis situation by a busy road. She said part of the tough talk training involved knowing the right things to say at the point of crisis, including managing the emotions and input of others in the area and knowing the right places to signpost a person needing immediate help. Jacqueline said Lottery funding for more tough talkers was very welcome news as Tough to Talk is offering an entirely different type of intervention from other charities. She said: “We were very lucky at Walk the Walk that our charity had been funded to undertake the ‘tough talker’ training by a sponsor. This is definitely needed. It will reach many more people. It’s not just the training, but the nuggets of information provided alongside, that are incredibly powerful. This Lottery

funding and the work of Tough to Talk will save lives.” Steve said: “I’m delighted and very proud that Tough to Talk has been awarded Lottery funding to deliver our life-saving training to many more people. “The whole ethos of the charity I founded is about reaching men before they hit crisis point. The statistics are stark. Men are three times as likely to take their own life as women. “That’s why our work focuses on upstream prevention – something we believe should begin long before suicidal thoughts are disclosed. Many organisations talk about mental health and many provide support. We believe one of the biggest challenges is that many men never reach that support before they hit crisis. “Tough To Talk exists to help organisations recognise distress earlier and create cultures where trusted people reach in before crisis develops. “We want to reach men well before they hit the point where they feel they can no longer go on. We believe there are signs there if you know how to look for them, changes in behaviour that are noticeable long before someone talks about suicidal thoughts. Helping people recognise those changes earlier is central to our approach. “We are passionate in our mission to reduce male suicide by breaking the silence on the pain men carry before it becomes a crisis. “We know men find it far harder to reach out for help than women do. That’s why our charity is designed to be much more proactive than others. I’m excited to see what more we can achieve with Lottery funding behind us to train more people.”

The realities, rewards and emotional journey of looking after someone you love For many people, becoming a carer isn't something they ever expected. It can begin quietly – helping a parent with the weekly shop, keeping a partner company at appointments or taking on a few extra jobs around the house. Gradually, those small acts of kindness can become an important part of everyday life. Being a carer can be challenging, but it can also be one of the most meaningful roles we ever take on. At its heart is often something very simple: love. Knowing that you're helping someone feel safe, supported and valued can bring an enormous sense of purpose. There are plenty of special moments along the way. Sharing a cup of tea, looking through old photographs, enjoying a favourite television programme or simply having a laugh together can become treasured parts of the day. Caring isn't only about practical tasks – it's about companionship, reassurance and being there when someone needs you most.

But caring can also be exhausting. Balancing someone else's needs with work, family commitments and your own responsibilities can sometimes feel overwhelming. There may be days when you're tired, frustrated or simply unsure whether you're doing enough. These feelings are completely normal, and admitting that you need a break doesn't make you a bad carer. In fact, looking after yourself is an important part of looking after someone else. Try to make space for the things that help you recharge, whether that's meeting a friend for coffee, going for a walk, enjoying a hobby or simply having some uninterrupted time to yourself. Even a short break can make a difference. And don't be afraid to accept help. Family and friends may be able to share some responsibilities, while local community organisations and carers' support services can offer practical advice, information and a listening ear. Sometimes knowing that someone else understands can be incredibly reassuring. Most importantly, remember that you don't have to be perfect. Caring is a journey, and every situation is different. Some days will be easier than others, but the small things you do can have a huge impact on another person's life.

When caring becomes your life, it's easy to forget yourself. So make time for both – because caring for yourself isn't selfish; it's part of the care you give.

Bereavement can leave people feeling sad, lost, and sometimes confused, but an appropriate funeral and memorial can bring great comfort and peace. At the Willows Natural Burial Ground, the tranquil surroundings of wildflower meadows, woodland, and ponds can provide great solace for those left behind as they remember the person or people they have lost. The Willows is a 10-acre family-owned natural burial site near South Croxton, with commanding views of the Charnwood countryside, where people can be buried in hand dug graves in eco-friendly coffins or caskets, made of biodegradable materials such as cardboard, willow, wool or banana leaf to name a few. Conversely, their ashes can be buried or subsurface scattered, either in bio-degradable urns or simply poured into or onto the ground. A range of commemorative memorials are available, made of natural materials such as Welsh slate, and wood, while many people choose to remember their loved ones by planting a tree or native rose bush. Owners Chris and Jenny Scroby and their family, have been transforming the bare fields with extensive tree and bulb planting since opening in 2011, inviting families of the

buried or pre-purchased plots, to join in at planting weekends. They recently purchased another 3,750 native British bluebell, snowdrop and daffodil bulbs, whilst simultaneously raising money for local charities. The Willows caters for people of all faiths or no faith. The site can accommodate graveside funerals or act solely as a burial site after a service elsewhere. If families do have a service on site, their fee includes provision of a small pop-up shelter, with limited seating and soft drinks for those attending. The natural burial option is a cost-effective alternative to a traditional cemetery burial or cremation. Chris and Jenny work with the family’s chosen funeral directors to ensure everything goes smoothly, whilst respecting the parameters set out to protect and promote the site as a natural, wildlife friendly environment. Chris says: “We’re very pleased with our progress, which we see as our contribution in giving something back to nature and the environment.”
