Victoria Centre Colleague Walks in Memory of Wife

A Nottingham resident is preparing to walk 18-miles from Matlock to Derby after losing both their wife and sisterin-law to glioblastoma, with family and friends hoping to raise £10,000 for adult brain tumour research at the University of Nottingham.

Shelley, who works at Victoria Centre, will be joined by around 20 family members and friends on Saturday 30 August to complete the challenge, with many taking on the walk dressed in inflatable costumes to help raise awareness and vital funds along the route.

The fundraiser is being held in memory of Shelley's wife, Lisa, who passed away on 14 February 2026, just months after being diagnosed with a grade 4 glioblastoma. The tragedy came shortly after Lisa's sister also lost her life to the same aggressive form of brain cancer, having been diagnosed in October 2024 and passing away in December that year.

More recently, Shelley's brother has also been diagnosed with cancer, making the family's determination to support cancer research even more personal.

The walk also carries special significance, taking place over what would have

been a weekend of celebration. Every year, Shelley and Lisa would celebrate Shelley's birthday by hosting a fancy dress party together. This year, as the walk falls on Shelley's birthday weekend, family and friends will honour that tradition by completing the challenge in inflatable costumes – celebrating Lisa's life while raising awareness for an important cause.

my birthday with a fancy dress party, so although she's no longer with us, we're carrying on that tradition by wearing inflatable costumes as we walk together. I know she would have loved it, and I hope it raises a few smiles as well as awareness along the way. We'd be incredibly grateful for any support, whether that's a donation or simply helping us share our story."

The group hopes to build on the £4,000 raised at Lisa's funeral and reach a fundraising total of £10,000, with every penny supporting research that could improve outcomes for future patients and families.

Victoria Centre is supporting Shelley in raising awareness of the fundraiser and encouraging the local community to get behind the challenge.

Shelley Winters, Security and Environmental Manager at Victoria Centre said: "Losing Lisa was devastating, and to have lost her sister to the same disease just a short time before makes it almost impossible to put into words what our family has been through. The care Lisa received from the teams at Nottingham's QMC and City Hospital was extraordinary, and this walk is our way of giving something back while helping to fund research that could one day save lives.

"This walk also feels like a fitting way to remember Lisa. Every year we'd celebrate

LNAA EXPANDS CRITICAL

CARE CAR SERVICE

To further strengthen emergency care for communities across Nottinghamshire, Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance (LNAA), has expanded its Critical Care Car to a 24/7 service, enabling our specialist clinicians to reach more patients with lifesaving treatment around the clock.

A generous donation from the Help Appeal has enabled LNAA to purchase two new Volvo XC 90s, supporting the delivery of a round the clock service in Nottinghamshire.

Crewed by the charity’s HEMS doctors and paramedics, the cars carry the same lifesaving equipment found on board the helicopter, including ventilators and advanced medicines, effectively taking the equivalent of a hospital emergency department directly to the scene.

The Critical Care Car team will respond across Nottinghamshire and surrounding areas, delivering life saving interventions at serious incidents including road traffic collisions, cardiac arrests, falls, industrial accidents and assaults. The introduction of the Critical Care Car in 2020 followed a successful trial which showed that around 400 additional missions are being missed in Nottinghamshire that could benefit from the service each year. Working collaboratively

with East Midlands Ambulance Service NHS Trust, LNAA has reviewed emergency call data and identified a clear need to increase provision to meet rising demand.This expansion also forms a key part of LNAA’s wider operational development, including upscaling for the second helicopter, ensuring we can meet the needs of our communities both now and in the future.

CEO Karen Jobling said: “Generous and heartfelt thanks must go to all our supporters, who enable us to provide this life saving service without any government funding.

To all of you, we are eternally grateful and proud to have your support.”

Operating from Tollerton, LNAA’s Critical Care Car will roam across Nottinghamshire, ensuring specialist teams are available whenever they are needed. In the first 21 days of July, the Nottinghamshire car was dispatched to 81 incidents. Of these, 36 took place during the additional shifts, representing around 1.7 extra missions each day.

This means the additional shift provision accounted for 44% of all Nottinghamshire

car missions during this period. In practical terms, it has increased the asset’s mission activity by almost half, enabling LNAA to attend significantly more incidents than under the previous operating model.

Head of Operations, Laura Evans, who helped lead the expansion project, said: “Our air ambulance crew are called to patients suffering from the very worst injuries and illnesses, and we are proud and privileged to be there for them in their time of need. Our clinicians can provide the highest level of specialist critical care, including blood transfusions, surgical procedures, advanced pain relief and pre hospital emergency anaesthesia, at the roadside or in homes when needed to stabilise the most critically ill patients.”

This autumn, Mansfield Museum and Art Gallery is inviting wildlife lovers and photographers of all ages to become part of its brand-new exhibition, Comedy Wildlife, by sharing their own hilarious wildlife photographs.

Opening on Saturday 5 September 2026 and running until Saturday 2 January 2027, Comedy Wildlife showcases a fantastic collection of award-winning images from the Nikon Comedy Wildlife Photography Awards. The exhibition celebrates the lighter side of nature, featuring perfectly timed photographs that capture animals in their funniest and most unexpected moments.

Alongside these internationally recognised images, the museum is creating a special Comedy Wildlife Wall of Fame, featuring photographs submitted by visitors and the local community. Whether you're an experienced wildlife photographer or simply snapped a funny moment while out for a walk, we'd love to see your pictures. From laughing gulls and mischievous squirrels to curious deer and

How a Nottinghamshire husband and wife turned lived experience of disability into Alfie and the Magic White Stick We never imagined that our experiences of disability would lead us to create a children's book. We are a Nottinghamshire husband and wife, Alfie and the Magic White Stick grew from our understanding of what it means when disability changes the way you experience everyday life.

When Everything Changes

For me, Sean, that change began in 2022 when I suddenly lost the sight in my left eye as a result of non-arteritic ischaemic optic neuropathy. I had spent 36 years in graphic design, illustration and art education. Art had always been central to my identity.

During 2023, further problems with my remaining sight led to a diagnosis of dry age-related macular degeneration.

Eventually, my sight loss brought my career as an art tutor to an end. I also had to adapt to losing much of my Sean and Julia Coupe wrote Alfie and the Magic White Stick to help children understand visual impairment.

My wife, Julia, has her own experience of physical disability. She has CharcotMarie-Tooth, a neuromuscular disease. Between us, we have experienced disability from different perspectives, but share an understanding of adapting rather than giving up when life changes.

From Experience to Story

It was against this background that the idea for Alfie began. I started thinking about how difficult visual impairment can be for children to understand. A child might see someone using a white cane or needing help and simply wonder why.

I wondered whether a children's book could explain sight loss simply. I suggested the idea to Julia, and together we began developing Alfie. Julia became the writer, turning the original concept into the story of seven-year-old Alfie as he learns to use his white cane and discovers that sight loss does not stop him having adventures, making friends or enjoying life. Sometimes, he simply has to find a different way of doing things.

More Than a Children's Book

Originally, I had hoped to illustrate the book myself. My sight, however, made that impossible in the traditional sense. Instead, I began using my

It is a reflection of our journey as a husband and wife living with different experiences of disability.

It is about sight loss, but also about creativity, resilience, adapting to change and discovering that losing one ability does not mean losing who you are. I may no longer be able to illustrate a book in the way I once did.

But I can still imagine.

I can still create. And, with a little help from technology, I can still be an artist.

Across Nottinghamshire, young people are being invited to take part in something truly extraordinary – helping to bring a new life-saving helicopter to our skies.

Lincolnshire & Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance has launched its brandnew Heli Heroes Schools’ Challenge, a campaign designed to inspire, educate and empower primary school pupils while raising the final funds needed for a second air ambulance.

At its heart, Heli Heroes is about showing children that they can make a real difference in their community. Through creative, accessible fundraising activities – from bake sales and sponsored challenges to talent shows and sports events – pupils can work together to support a cause that could one day save the life of someone they love.

But this campaign is about much more than fundraising. It’s also a powerful educational opportunity. Schools that sign up receive a full activity pack, including curriculumlinked lesson plans, STEM-focused learning resources and assembly materials. Pupils can explore subjects such as aviation, emergency medicine and teamwork, linking classroom learning to real-world impact in a meaningful and memorable way.

The campaign is built around the “109 Challenge”, inspired by the new AW109

helicopter. Whether it’s running 109 laps, baking 109 cakes or creating a unique challenge of their own, every effort contributes to a shared goal – helping to fund a vital service that operates entirely thanks to public support.

To add even more excitement, schools taking part have the chance to win a truly unforgettable experience: a visit from the air ambulance itself or a behindthe-scenes tour of the charity’s headquarters, giving pupils the opportunity to meet the crew and see the helicopter up close.

Every mission flown by the air ambulance represents a local life in urgent need – a neighbour, a friend, a family member. Through Heli Heroes, young people across Nottinghamshire can play their part in protecting those lives and keeping families together.

Because when a community comes together, even its youngest members can help save lives.

A fresh start is needed if you are to make any headway.

Try to bolster yourself up to look and sound more convincing. Love and romance is rarely smooth because of all the complications involved, but if you really want something to work, you must allow things to develop naturally. There could soon be a change of direction in the most unusual way.

Even though on the surface you appear to be calm and in control, deep down you probably feel increasingly frustrated by things happening, especially if you are experiencing a cash flow problem. Getting others organised is proving tough, but keep pushing ahead with your plans. People appear to be living in a dream world of their own and quite happy to keep you waiting around. Sit tight and wait because once things start to happen, you can make the new, all important plans.

You’re under pressure to get a job done. Keeping your mind focused on any project is difficult when your head is buzzing with everything on your errand list. Whilst you are confident in many respects, there are areas where you stll suffer moments of self doubt. Use your charm and negotiating skills to secure a good deal that works for you. Over the coming weeks, the spotlight will be on romantic relationships, and there could be either a complete change of heart or new plans put into place.

A friend will prove very helpful and supportive, especially if they understand your circumstances and able to guide you in the right direction. Someone in your family appears to have a very short memory, expecting you to forgive and forget each time they upset you. Celebrations are in store as numerous wonderful surprises and announcements are made, some of which will be totally unexpected, but could affect you indirectly.

By following your instincts, you will get to the truth of a matter. Often people are fickle and full of false promises, so there is no need to feel disappointed. Little Brick House

Local neighbourhood bistro with a unique blend of the freshest homecooked meals served with natural wines in a relaxed environment.

Only a stones throw north of the city centre is the Little Brick House on Derby Road. I had been meaning to visit for a while but a raving review from my sister kicked my arse into action and I booked for easter weekend.

I had heard a lot about this little restaurant a year or so ago but things had gone more quiet recently and I assumed it was the buzz of the ‘new’ fading gently into the thrum of the ‘established’. Upon trying to book a table we had to choose a few weeks away, the night we visited the dining room was full and we were invited to the bar area while they cleared our table.

The bar at the back is a dark cavern of curiousities. Eccentric and eclectic paintings, murals and sculptures that are an absolute feast and under the romantic light of candles Little Brick House oozes charm.

The menu is concise and seems to borrow influence in much the same way the paraphernalia around the restaurant does – on the chef/owners whim. It made us feel like there was quite a lot of freedom to pick and choose.

Indonesian alongside burrata – why not? As we were choosing the lady from the table next to us got up to go to the loo and one half of the restaurant was plunged into a little more darkness than is desirable for dinner. The hostess came over and explained the chair had caught one of the extension cables and knocked out most of the lights.

With a quick swish the lights were back on but it became obvious that this restaurant had no million £ refurb like some of the newer restaurants in Nottingham. Although I get a bit tired of Nottingham ‘shabby chic’ restaurant styles the Little Brick House gets away with it

I like eating out, trying new restaurants and being on the receiving end of great hospitality.

I am a mum with 2 children (one baby, one 9 year old) so I include how the places I visit work for families.

I have worked in bars, cafes, restaurants and pubs for most of my life.

Good places should be supported, celebrated and shared.

because it has a real soul. It feels like you are in someones house and that air of generous hospitality extends a gracious hand to guests throughout.

We started with bread and olives; so far, so boring. The bread was eye wateringly salty and I can only assume comes from Tough Marys a couple of doors down, with a light oil it would have been delicious but the wild garlic butter packed such a ferocious raw garlic punch we both struggled to finish.

Next came the sweetcorn and despite The Northerner tucking in with gusto I didn’t enjoy the dish, the sweetcorn was tinned and so was a poor imitation of the buttery flavour you get with fresh corn and the dish was too wet. The honey and feta melted into the brine of the sweetcorn and although the cumin and chilli were there, they were fighting a losing battle Not to worry though we had 2 more dishes to go, they arrived together and were bathed in the warm glow of the candle. Not knowing what to expect from the indonesian dish I prioritised that and dug through the coriander and crispy onions to find the meltingly soft pork and perfectly cooked potatoes all coated in a delicious, rich sauce. I carried on trying to pull out

distinctive flavours but struggled to get much further than the fried onions and coriander. They added a lot to the dish (texture/flavour) but were used so liberally I couldn’t identify much more..

The Northerner started with the Veal and although I hadn’t mentioned it (and seem to be on my own in this thought) the idea of veal has always made me really sad. I’m a complete hypocrite as I will eat lamb till the cows come home but I never choose veal on a menu. Putting my emotion to one side I had a mouthful expecting beautifully tender meat and an acidic potato salad. The veal itself was wonderfully cooked and heavy in

that indulgent way breadcrumb and fried food is, but the potato salad was a miss.

It could have been the perfect foil with a bit of mustard, some more acidity and really shone next to the schnitzel but it was just claggy mayonnaise and overcooked potatoes. I squeezed as much out the lemon as is possible and after that was swallowed by the oil I gave up.

The hit and miss nature of the meal and limited dessert selection meant we decided to call it a night after the main dishes. I feel really conflicted in this review as I think Little Brick House has a beautiful soul and warmth at the heart of everything it does. I hope we just ordered

badly or caught them on an off night as the city is definitely poorer without these glimmers of (candle) light.

The start of the popular Vineyard Tours for 2026 are running throughout the summer.

THOUSANDS OF FOOD LOVERS ARE SET TO DESCEND ON LEAMINGTON SPA ONCE AGAIN AS ONE OF THE TOWN'S MOST POPULAR ANNUAL EVENTS RETURNS. Now in its 19th year, the free-toattend festival, organised by BID Leamington, is expected to attract thousands of visitors across the weekend. but Flavanols too!

Recently released research suggests that eating very specific types of fresh food each day - not just any five portions of fruit and vegetables - could help keep your heart healthy.

Fruit and veg with high levels of important nutrients called flavanols are key to a healthy heart and while the study recommended eating blueberries, plums, blackberries, broad beans and cherries, washed down with green tea, it omitted to recommend watercress (and other leafy greens) which has some of the highest levels of flavonoids, particularly one called quercetin.

But what are flavanols and how do they work? Here’s the science!

Polyphenols are increasingly recognised for their potential health benefits and are found in a wide range of foods and drinks, including fruits, vegetables, tea and even chocolate. They are divided into four main groups: flavonoids, lignans, stilbenes and phenolic acids (2).

Research suggests that polyphenols may support health by helping to improve blood lipid levels, blood pressure, insulin sensitivity and inflammation (2).

Studies have particularly linked a higher intake of flavonoids with a lower risk of metabolic disease and cardiovascular disease (CVD) (6).

Cardiovascular disease, which is often caused by the buildup of fatty deposits in the arteries remains the leading cause of death worldwide (4). One flavonoid that has received significant attention is quercetin, due to its potential

role in supporting cardiovascular health. Research suggests that quercetin may help reduce blood clot formation, support healthy blood vessel function and protect cells lining the blood vessels from damage (4). Some of these benefits are thought to arise from interactions with the gut microbiome, which can convert quercetin into bioactive compounds that may contribute to its healthpromoting effects (2).

Watercress is a source of flavonoids, particularly quercetin and kaempferol. A 100g serving provides approximately 30mg of quercetin and 23mg of kaempferol (5). But, watercress is also a source of dietary nitrates, where nitrate is converted by bacteria in the mouth and then in the body into nitric oxide (NO), an important signalling molecule that helps maintain healthy blood vessels. In addition, the high levels of antioxidants that watercress contains, including vitamin C and isothiocyanates help protect cells from damage caused by reactive oxygen species, commonly known as free radicals. Excessive oxidative stress has been linked to a range of health conditions, including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, neurodegenerative disorders and the ageing process (3). All good reasons to add more watercress into your diet!

The Watercress Company has suggested a few recipes* that contain ingredients recognised to have good levels of flavonoids including green beans, broccoli, cabbage, artichoke and many more, as well of course, watercress. Full of flavour and full of flavanols – heart healthy dishes for all!

Looking after our hearts doesn’t have to be hard. Of course, regular exercise is key, but eating a healthy, balanced diet full of fresh fruit and vegetables plays a crucial role too. Including good levels of leafy greens, such as watercress, spinach and kale, together with broccoli, cabbage, beans, plums, blackberries and many more will help to keep your heart happy and healthy.

Prep time: 10 minutes Cooking Time: 0 minutes Ingredients: • ½ each red & white cabbage • 85g watercress • 1 carrot • Sunflower seeds For the dressing: • 4tbsp olive oil • 2tbps mayo • 1tbsp mustard • 1 tbsp honey • 1 tsp lemon juice Method: 1. Roughly chop your cabbage.

Using a vegetable peeler, cut the carrot into ribbons.

2. Mix the ingredients for the dressing – season to taste 3. Toss the watercress, cabbage and carrot together, assemble on a plate before drizzling with dressing and sprinkling with sunflower seeds.

Za’atar Charred Broccoli & Watercress Salad with Pomegranate and Roasted Buckwheat (Vegan) Prep time: 30 mins Cooking Time: 30 mins Ingredients: Spiced Pomegranate Dressing: • 3tbsp Olive Oil • 1 tbsp Lemon Juice • 1 tbsp Pomegranate Molasses • 1/8 tsp Cinnamon, ground • 1/8 tsp Cardamom, ground • Salt & Pepper to season Roasted Buckwheat: • 50g Buckwheat Groats (available online or large supermarkets)

Salad: • 200g Watercress • 125g Pomegranate Seeds • 200g Tenderstem Broccoli • 1 red Onion, cut into chunks • 2 tbsp Olive Oil • 2 tsp Za’atar • 2 tsp Chilli Flakes • 1 tsp Malden Salt Flakes • 1 Lemon, zest • ½ Bunch Chopped Parsley • 200g Cooked Brown Lentils (available in a pouch)

Method: 1. Preheat oven 160C. Spread the buckwheat in a single layer on a baking tray and roast for 15-20 minutes or until nutty and golden. Remove and allow to cool. Increase the oven 200C 2. Lay the broccoli on a lined baking tray with the onion.

Drizzle with the oil and sprinkle with the za’atar, lemon, chili and salt. Roast for 15-20 minutes or until beginning to char. Set aside.

3. Combine all the dressing ingredients in a jar and shake well to combine.

4. Tumble the broccoli and all the cooking juices into a bowl.

Mix in the lentils and parsley.

5. Lay the watercress on a platter and drizzle with a little dressing. Top with the lentil mixture and drizzle with some more of the dressing. Finally, top with the pomegranate and roasted buckwheat. Serve at room temperature with extra dressing on the side.

Step back into the 1940s this September as The Victory Show transforms Foxlands Farm in Cosby, Leicestershire, into an unforgettable celebration of Second World War history. Running from Friday 4 to Sunday 6 September 2026, this remarkable three-day event brings the past vividly to life across a 100acre site, offering discovery, spectacle and entertainment for visitors of every generation.

Since its first show in 2005, The Victory Show has grown into the largest World War II re-enactment weekend of its kind in the United Kingdom. More than a display, it is a carefully created window into wartime life. Visitors can walk among authentic military camps, meet knowledgeable re-enactors and explore how service personnel lived, what they ate and the uniforms and equipment they relied upon. Detailed home-front displays reveal the resilience of ordinary people, helping ensure their stories remain meaningful for future generations.

Across the showground, hundreds of period vehicles provide an impressive picture of wartime mobility, from heavy armour and artillery to motorcycles, softskinned vehicles and working vintage farming machinery. Many will feature in dramatic battle re-enactments, where sound, movement and expert staging create a powerful sense of history unfolding before your eyes.

Look skywards for another highlight:

the weekend air display. Celebrated aircraft such as the Spitfire, P-51 Mustang, Hawker Hurricane and Dakota DC-3 are among the types associated with the show, joining static aircraft and ground displays for a memorable tribute to wartime aviation.

There is plenty to enjoy between the major displays. Browse a large traders’ market filled with militaria, uniforms, collectables and vehicle parts; hear from guest speakers; and enjoy live entertainment throughout the day.

NOTTINGHAM's favourite activity park, Slick City, is letting thrill-seekers unleash their inner child with the launch of its highly anticipated adult only nights.

Located on Lenton Lane Industrial Estate, adrenaline junkies aged 18+ will have exclusive access to the action park on the first Friday of each month. Starting from Friday 7th August, grown-ups can rediscover the joy of the playground between 8pm and 10pm, costing £22.95 per person for a two-hour slot.

Offering an alternative date night destination and weekend hang-out spot, visitors can take on its 16 different dry slides including the four-person Fast Lane, the plunging Royal Flush, the steep Big Wave, and Slick City’s signature Mega Launch.

Since its doors opened in March 2026, Slick City has welcomed thousands of customers of all ages, with sessions nearing full capacity each day since. However, during the months since launch, the team has received increasing calls for adult-only sessions and have responded by expanding their offering in line with that.

Explaining more, Phil James, Managing Director of Slick City UK, said: "With fewer people choosing to spend their weekends in pubs and bars, there's a real appetite for experiences and activities that couples, friends and adults of all ages can enjoy.

When 10cc co-founder Graham Gouldman formed what became Heart Full of Songs more than a decade ago, it was purely for the pleasure of laying the songs he wrote or cowrote in their simplest form, acoustically.It started as a threepiece supporting at 10cc concerts and quickly evolved into a stand-alone entity. These days Heart Full of Songs is a semi-acoustic/electric, four-piece with its next UK tour set for October 2026, comprising 18 concerts and culminating at London’s Cadogan Hall on 29 October.

Featuring material from across Graham’s catalogue, the set includes such classics as 10cc’s I’m Not In Love and Dreadlock Holiday; Bus Stop and Look Through Any Window, which were hits for The Hollies; For Your Love and Heart Full of Soul (the Yardbirds); No Milk Today (Herman’s Hermits); Bridge To Your Heart from his time with the late Andrew Gold as Wax, along with songs from film soundtracks and his solo albums.

Acknowledgement of Graham’s achievements has been growing more widely too, with him awarded an MBE in the 2025 King’s Birthday Honours list, for services to music.

Also underpinning his position as one of the world’s leading songwriters were the guest contributors on his latest album, I have Notes. They include Ringo Starr, Brian May, Hank Marvin an Albert Lee, “It is extremely gratifying to do what I love, performing the songs I’ve written or co written over the years, to audiences who really appreciate them in a semi-acoustic format,” says Graham. “With Keith Hayman, Andy Park and BenStone we have a fantastic band that presents the songs with passion and to the highest musical standards. I couldn’t ask for more.”

Make the most of the school holidays with family-friendly days out and fascinating stories from the past at National Trust places across Nottinghamshire.

Summer of Play returns to Clumber Park near Worksop from 18 July to 6 September, with six interactive zones designed to spark imagination and encourage adventure across the 3,800-acre estate.

Families can burn off energy in the Active Zone with football, cricket, pickleball, and hockey, while younger visitors can enjoy dedicated spaces including the Toddler Zone and Nature Zone.

Budding performers can take to the stage in the Imagination Zone, and den builders and creators will love the Loose Parts Zone. New for 2026 is a Pokémonthemed area with a straw bale arena at the heart of the Front Field.

Alongside the play zones, there will be storytelling sessions, ukulele workshops and bookable activities including yoga, crafts, nature dyeing, The Big Tree Climb and outdoor pantomimes from Talegate Theatre Productions.

Mini-golf, teddy bear ziplines and Pokémon: find them all at Belton Estate this summer! Ready, Set, Play is the theme for the National Trust site’s holiday activities, all based around games and sharing play experiences together, which are running from now until Wednesday 2 September.

One of the standouts of this year’s Summer of Play, supported by Pokémon, is a 9-hole mini golf course which has been entirely handmade by volunteers. The ‘Explorer Golf’ features obstacles and components inspired by nature’s elements, from volcanoes to whirlpools, forests, caves and more.

From there, an active play zone includes badminton, swing ball and a bean bag toss, and leads on to a teddy explore area featuring a teddy bear zipline, dressup theatre, and bricks for building teddy a house, complete with hard hats and safety jackets.

On top of all this, visitors can discover all-new Pokémon zones where they can get stuck into the Pokémon Trading Card Game, flex their skills, and collect Mega Evolution stickers. Plus, families can team up to seaarch the gardens on the Pokémon Trading Card Game Mega Evolution Trail, discovering the Mega Evolution Pokémons’ powers and completing challenges.

A sensory zone offers the chance to step away from all the excitement to a quieter space within a bell tent, featuring fidget boards, books and tactile play, as well as a barefoot walk and sensory boxes outside.

It’s so lovely after months of planning and hard work to see families out playing together and making special memories. I’m really proud of

Activities will be taking place throughout the holidays, enhancing all that’s on offer.

The different teams at Belton will all be delivering special insights into the work they do and inviting children to get involved with handson sessions: the collections team will be bringing some interesting items from the house to handle on Wednesday 12 and 26 August; the rangers will be sharing amazing facts about the fallow deer at Belton and bringing some antlers to touch on Saturday 15 August; and the garden team will be helping children to plant seeds in pots to take home on Wednesday 19 August. Plus, free craft activities will be taking place every Thursday and Saturday, offering the chance for families to make hot air balloons, stone beetles, bunting and more.

Belton Acorns sessions, which usually run on regular Tuesdays in term time, will be taking place every Tuesday during the holidays. These are aimed at under 5s and children can have a go at designing bugs, making boats, painting the gardens and more. There will also be Storytelling Sessions with British Sign Language interpretation from 11am to 3pm on Thursday 13 August and Tuesday 1 September.

Belton is home to the largest outdoor playground in the National Trust, set amongst shady trees, as well as The Ride indoor adventure play.

The National Tramway Museum has enjoyed a fantastic start to the summer, welcoming thousands of visitors throughout July and August as the East Midlands basked in glorious sunshine.

Families made the most of the warm weather by exploring the museum's historic streets, enjoying unlimited vintage tram rides and cooling off with a refreshing Matlock Meadows ice cream while taking in the spectacular views across the Derwent Valley.

Our Dinosaur Day proved a roaring success, attracting an abundance of visitors for a day of prehistoric family fun under glorious blue skies. From towering dinosaurs and baby dinos to face painting, crafts and a woodland dinosaur trail, it was the perfect way to kick off the school summer holidays.

The summer celebrations continued with our popular Sounds of the 1950s and 60s weekend, where visitors stepped back in time to enjoy live music, sing-alongs and dance demonstrations. The nostalgic atmosphere made for another memorable weekend at the museum.

Set high above the beautiful Derbyshire countryside in Crich, the National Tramway Museum continues to offer one of the East Midlands' most unique family attractions.

Visitors can step aboard to have unlimited rides on beautifully restored vintage trams, wander through a recreated period street, discover woodland walks, sculpture trails, exhibitions and play areas—all included within admission. Between rides, visitors can relax in the Tram Stop Café, enjoy traditional sweets, or unwind with a drink in the historic Red Lion Pub. Four-legged family members are welcome too, making it a great day out for everyone. The summer holiday entertainment continues throughout August with plenty to entertain the whole family.

Visitors can enjoy hands-on activities as part of the museum's Children's Summer Holiday programme, while Notice This Theatre Company returns by popular demand with Sherlock Holmes and the Crich Conundrum.

This free promenade performance takes audiences on a fun-filled mystery through the woodland walk, with performances running several times each day.

The summer concludes with the ever-popular Teddy Bears' Picnic on 30th and 31st August.

Families are invited to bring their favourite teddy and a picnic, follow the woodland teddy trail, enjoy live entertainment from Amy Zing and the 1950s and 60s sounds of Rocks and Frocks, and meet the much-loved Mr Bear. Children bringing a teddy will also receive a free commemorative badge.

Looking ahead, Tram Weekend returns on 12th and 13th September, celebrating the museum's nationally important tram collection with an extensive line-up of operational trams, archive film footage and static displays. The weekend will also mark the official launch of the museum's brand-new Access Tram, a significant milestone in making heritage tram travel more inclusive. Everyone is welcome to attend the launch celebrations, while invited guests, accessibility partners and community groups will be among the first to experience rides on the new tram.

The Academy of St Martin in the Fields returns to the birthplace of its founder, Sir Neville Marriner, for a programme that showcases some of the most compelling music from the classical repertoire alongside a contemporary work inspired by the past.

The concert opens with Beethoven's Violin Concerto in D major, Op.6. one of the most celebrated violin concertos ever written. Joining the orchestra is acclaimed violinist Stella Chen, whose recent recording of the work with the Academy has been praised for its clarity and expressive depth. From its iconic opening drumbeats to its soaring melodies and radiant orchestral climaxes, the concerto remains a landmark of the violin repertoire.

We organise business support sessions across the year on topics including sustainability, marketing and AI. Our team are always open to suggestions from businesses regarding topics they’d like to see, so please do contact us with any ideas you have.

Our next session will be Wellbeing at Work on Wednesday 1st July, which will bring together a wide range of organisations that support workforce wellbeing, including Your Health Notts and Talking Therapies. An expert business advisory service is on offer to local businesses through our links to Nottinghamshire County Council. This involves 1-to-1 guidance which provide business owners with the opportunity to

discuss how to grow, build resilience and achieve goals. This support is offered on an ad hoc basis or at one of our business support surgeries, with the next session on Thursday 10th September in Collingham.

Alongside this, we are excited to be partnering with the Federation of Small Businesses to host a Nottinghamshire Business Boot Camp on 8th July, and our annual Economic Growth Conference will return on Thursday 8th October.

New investment is going into regeneration schemes in our towns, such as the creation of retail units and a public services hub in Ollerton to boost local connectivity. More investment is on the horizon with the announcement of the

Pride in Place programme We also work with local businesses to create tailored retail campaigns aimed at boosting local spend, such as our recently launched Newark and Sherwood Gift Card which now has over 100 retailers signed up.

External schemes include Middlebeck, a development adding 7,000 homes and employment floorspace south of Newark.

The ants you're seeing are worker ants that bring food back to the colony.

Once one ant finds a food source, it releases a pheromone trail that guides dozens more ants to exactly the same spot.

Tiny food sources are enough to bring ants back into your home. Whether it is crumbs under the toaster, sugary residue on the worktop, standing water near the sink, or even pet food, these can all become food sources for ants.

Which ants are most commonly found in UK homes?

There are more than 50 species of ant in the UK, but only a few regularly enter homes. Black garden ants are the most common household ant. They are small, dark brown to black, and frequently enter kitchens looking for sugary foods, crumbs, and spills. They usually nest

If a repellent spray is used, it can actually encourage ants to relocate instead of eliminating the colony. Think of sprays as

a temporary solution and bait traps as the long-term solution.

Bait traps remain the most effective treatment for most household ant problems. Rather than killing ants immediately, they allow worker ants to carry bait back to the nest where it's shared throughout the colony. People often worry when they see more ants after placing bait traps, but that's actually a sign they are working. The worker ants need time to carry the bait back to the colony. Patience is essential.

Follow the manufacturer's instructions and avoid moving or replacing bait too quickly.

If you'd prefer a chemical-free option, vinegar, citrus, and peppermint can all help discourage ants temporarily.

These scents disrupt the pheromone trails ants use to navigate to and from their colonies. These should be used as a prevention method and homeowners should be aware that they will not eliminate an infestation.

When it comes to eating for cardiovascular health, diet advice can feel overwhelming. One week the Mediterranean diet is hailed as the gold standard. The next, experts are praising plantbased eating.

Meanwhile, the DASH diet continues to quietly earn recognition from doctors and nutritionists around the world. Amie Leckie, Registered Nutritional Therapist and Health and Wellbeing Specialist at Heart Research UK discusses the worlds heart healthiest diets and presents her argument for what the best diet for heart health actually looks like.

With so many competing headlines, it’s easy to assume there must be one “perfect” diet for heart health. But

when you look past the labels, the reality is much simpler, and far more encouraging.

So rather than asking “Which diet is best?”, perhaps the better question is, “Which healthy eating style can I realistically enjoy and sustain long term?” Lets have a look at the different diet options for heart health.

The Mediterranean Diet

The Mediterranean diet is rarely left out of conversations about heart health, and for good reason. Inspired by the traditional eating habits of countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea, such as Greece, Italy and southern Spain, it consistently ranks among the healthiest

One reason the Mediterranean diet is so highly regarded is its flexibility. It doesn’t rely on strict calorie counting or complete elimination of certain food groups. Instead, it encourages balance, variety and importantly – enjoyment of food.

Research has repeatedly linked Mediterranean-style eating with lower rates of heart disease, reduced blood pressure and improved cholesterol levels. Olive oil, oily fish and nuts provide heart-friendly unsaturated fats, while the abundance of fibre-rich plant foods helps support overall cardiovascular function. But one of the biggest strengths

LIFESTYLE of the Mediterranean diet is that it feels sustainable. Meals are often colourful, flavourful and social, qualities that can make healthy eating easier to maintain over time.

The DASH Diet

Unlike the Mediterranean diet, the DASH diet was created specifically to address a medical concern: hypertension.

DASH stands for Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension, and its primary goal is to lower blood pressure naturally through food.

The DASH diet focuses heavily on: • Vegetables and fruits • Whole grains • Lean proteins • Low-fat dairy • Nuts and legumes • Limiting salt, saturated fat and added sugars In many ways, DASH looks very similar to the Mediterranean diet. The main difference is its stronger emphasis on reducing salt intake and its more structured guidance around portion sizes and specific nutrient targets. It encourages straightforward habits such as swapping refined grains for whole grains, choosing leaner proteins and hitting a daily fruit and vegetable intake target.

Amie explains: “For people with high blood pressure, the DASH diet can be really effective because it increases the intake nutrients such as potassium, magnesium and calcium, which all play important roles in blood pressure regulation and can help reduce blood pressure over time.”

Critics sometimes describe DASH as slightly more clinical or less exciting than Mediterranean eating, but that structure can actually be helpful for people who prefer clear guidelines.

Plant-Based and Vegetarian Diets Plant-based eating has grown dramatically in popularity in recent years, driven by both health and environmental concerns.

A plant-based or vegetarian diet focuses primarily on foods that come from plants, including: • Fruits and vegetables • Legumes • Whole grains • Nuts and seeds Some vegetarian diets include dairy and eggs, while vegan diets exclude all animal products . When done well, plant-based diets can offer

cardiovascular benefits. They are often naturally high in fibre and lower in unhealthy fats, which can help improve cholesterol levels and support healthy blood pressure. There’s also growing evidence that diets rich in plant foods reduce inflammation which supports long-term heart health.

However, “plant-based” doesn’t automatically mean healthy. It’s entirely possible to follow a vegetarian diet filled with highly processed meat substitutes, sugary snacks and refined carbohydrates. A vegan doughnut is still a doughnut.

Amie says: “It’s important to remember that dietary labels alone do not determine health outcomes. A balanced diet based on whole foods, that includes meat and other animal products remains healthier than a heavily processed vegetarian or vegan one. It’s important people don’t fall into the processed veggie diet trap.”

What about the Blue Zones?

Another way of eating to consider in the conversation around diet and heart health comes from the so-called “Blue Zones” – regions of the world where people consistently live longer than average and experience unusually low rates of chronic disease. The five original Blue Zones identified by researchers are Okinawa, Sardinia, Ikaria, Nicoya Peninsula and Loma Linda.

At first glance, these communities appear very different and their traditional diets also vary considerably.

Sardinians may eat sheep’s cheese and sourdough bread, Okinawans historically relied heavily on sweet potatoes and soy foods, while people in Loma Linda often follow vegetarian diets due to religious practices.

So, which “diet” do Blue Zone populations follow? The answer is, none of them fit neatly into a modern diet label. Some are closest to Mediterranean eating, particularly in Ikaria and Sardinia. Loma Linda leans more plant-based or vegetarian. Others combine elements of several dietary approaches. But despite the differences, the common themes are consistent.

Across all Blue Zones, researchers found several shared eating habits: • Meals are based largely on whole, minimally processed foods • Vegetables, beans and legumes feature heavily • Fruit is eaten regularly • Highly processed snacks and sugary drinks are limited

• Meat is eaten sparingly or in smaller portions • Meals are often cooked from scratch at home • People tend to eat more slowly and stop before feeling overly full Importantly, food is also deeply connected to lifestyle. In many Blue Zone communities, eating is social, meals are shared with family and daily life naturally includes movement and physical activity.

Amie says: “This highlights an important point on the subject of eating for heart health. Cardiovascular health, or even overall health, is never determined by a single perfect food plan. Instead, it’s shaped by consistent long-term habits.”

None of these populations are obsessively counting calories or chasing dietary trends. They simply eat mostly real food, plenty of plants and fewer ultra-processed products.

So Which Diet Wins?

Despite their differences, all of these diets overlap far more than they conflict.

The labels may differ, but the principles remain pretty similar and there is one clear message that cuts through nearly all credible nutrition advice: eat more real food.

All of these healthy diets encourage: • Eating more vegetables and fruit • Choosing whole grains over refined carbohydrates • Reducing heavily processed foods • Limiting excess sugar • Including fibre-rich foods • Prioritising healthier protein sources Modern diets are often dominated by ultra-processed foods that are high in salt, sugar and unhealthy fats while being low in fibre and nutrients.

Regardless of which named diet you follow, reducing these foods is likely to benefit your cardiovascular health.

Healthy eating also doesn’t need to be perfect. A sustainable approach that allows flexibility, enjoyment and cultural preferences is more effective than rigid rules. Perhaps the most important takeaway is that good nutrition doesn’t need to fit neatly into a label.

In addition, long-term consistency is one of the biggest predictors of health success. The “best” diet on paper means very little if it feels restrictive, stressful or is impossible to maintain. So instead of chasing the “perfect” diet, focus on building a way of eating that supports both your health and your life. Because the healthiest diet is rarely the most fashionable one – it’s the one you can happily stick with.

Self-care for Mental Health Just like our physical fitness, we need to look after our mental health to feel good.

When someone you know is struggling, it can be hard to know what to say or how to help. One of the most important things you can do is to encourage them to talk to you about what’s going on for them.

Just letting them know that you there and want to listen, when they’re ready, can make a big difference. The good news is that you don’t need to have all the answers. Support means something different to everyone, so ask them if they have any ideas about how you can help them.

Encourage the person you know to get plenty of sleep and eat well, and maybe offer to help them problem solve any practical difficulties that they are dealing with. Helping them recognise their achievements and good things about themselves can really help. While you are supporting them, don’t forget to look after yourself too.

Five ways to keep you, or someone you know, mentally healthy

1. Connect with other people – encourage them to spend time with family and friends, and not to rely only on social media and messaging to keep in touch.

2. Be active – do regular physical activity.

They don’t have to spend hours in the gym, unless they want to. Find a physical activity they enjoy doing and encourage them to make it part of their daily life.

3. Keep learning – help the person who is struggling to find something new to do and learn how to do it. Help them find something they enjoy and that also challenges them.

4. Be kind – encourage them to find a way to help other people. This doesn’t have to be a really big thing and sometimes the small things can really make a difference. Get them to take time to check in with a friend, or get them involved in volunteering in their local community.

5. Pay attention – notice what is going on for them now, in the present moment.

People often call this mindfulness.

Walking gives us more energy, reduces stress and helps us solve problems more easily and sleep better. Even just 10 minutes of walking or wheeling outside can make a real difference to how we feel. And it doesn’t need to be about going on a long hike or joining a walking group, it can simply be going for a short walk around the block, to the shops or pottering around the nearest green space.

Crimestoppers urges public to speak up anonymously Crimestoppers is launching a new campaign to highlight the growing impact of neighbourhood crime across the UK and empower people to share information anonymously to help protect communities.

From burglary and robbery to shoplifting and phone theft, neighbourhood crime is reshaping everyday life, affecting people’s sense of safety at home, their confidence on their streets and trust in local high streets and public spaces.

Latest figures show the scale of the issue with more than 509,000 shoplifting offences, 224,000 burglaries, and 129,000 thefts from the person recorded across the UK. In addition, there were an estimated 590,000 incidents of retail violence and abuse, alongside 950,000 cases of verbal abuse in convenience stores*.

These are not just statistics, they represent real people experiencing fear, disruption, and lasting emotional impact.

Neighbourhood crime can have longterm consequences. Burglaries can damage a person’s sense of security in their own home. Robberies and phone theft can change how people travel, socialise and go about daily life.

Retail crime continues to affect local businesses, workers and the overall confidence of many communities.

Despite this, many incidents go unreported. People may fear retaliation, not want direct involvement with police, or feel that speaking up will not make a difference. This silence can leave the door open for organised crime and criminal activity to continue, leaving communities feeling unsafe.

The start of the school holidays may be associated with freedom, fun and a welcome break from routine, but for many autistic children, the sudden change can feel overwhelming.

Depending on your child’s age and communication preferences, this could be a detailed weekly timetable or three simple pictures showing “breakfast, park, home”.

The experts at Autism Parenting Magazine share eight practical ways parents can help autistic children cope with the transition to the summer holidays.

The loss of a familiar school timetable, increased social expectations and visits to busy or unfamiliar places can create additional anxiety for autistic children.

Keep the schedule somewhere accessible and look at it together. When plans change, update it rather than expecting your child to adjust immediately to new verbal instructions.

Visual schedules, timers and clear reminders can all help children anticipate what is coming next.

While parents’ social-media feeds may be filled with activity-packed schedules and pressure to create the “perfect summer”, Autism Parenting Magazine says many autistic children need something very different: predictability, flexibility, sensory support and time to recover.

The magazine has shared eight practical ways families can make the transition easier.

Replace the school routine — don’t remove routine altogether

Your child may no longer need to be at school by a certain time, but that does not necessarily mean every day should become completely unstructured.

Autism Parenting Magazine recommends creating a new summer routine, with consistent “bookends” such as a familiar waking time and bedtime.

Meals, regular activities and quiet periods can also become useful anchor points. The aim is not to schedule every minute. It is to give the day enough shape that your child knows what is likely to happen next.mA summer routine might be as simple as: • Breakfast and getting dressed • A morning activity • Lunch • Quiet or screen time • An optional afternoon activity • Dinner and the usual bedtime routine Familiar routines can provide reassurance and help reduce stress, while still leaving room for flexibility and choice.

Make plans visible

Telling a child that you are “going out later” may leave them with dozens of unanswered questions. Where are we going? When are we leaving? Who will be there? How long will it take? What happens afterwards? A visual schedule, written list, calendar or sequence of pictures can make an abstract plan feel more concrete.

Introduce summer gradually

The final day of school does not have to be the first time your child hears about their new routine. In the days or weeks beforehand, begin counting down to the end of term and talking through what will change. Show them their summer calendar, discuss planned activities and explain which parts of the day will remain the same.

If your child will be attending a holiday club, visiting a new childcare setting or starting a summer activity, try to visit the location beforehand where possible. Looking at photographs, watching a video or meeting a member of staff may help make the experience feel more predictable. Small preparations can make a significant difference, particularly for children who find uncertainty or unfamiliar environments difficult.

Stop trying to fill every day

A packed diary may look exciting on paper, but a busy summer is not automatically a successful one. Days out can involve crowds, queues, unfamiliar toilets, changes in temperature and unexpected sensory input. Even when a child enjoys an activity, they may still need significant time afterwards to recover.

Avoid placing demanding activities back-to-back. A trip to a theme park, family gathering or busy attraction may need to be followed by a quiet day at home — not another outing designed to make the most of the holidays.

Rest is not wasted time, and children do not need to be constantly entertained. For some autistic children, a familiar day at home may be exactly what they need to feel regulated and ready for the next activity.

Plan for sensory needs before leaving home

Summer can bring a completely different sensory environment. There

may be bright sunlight, hot and sticky weather, noisy attractions, crowded beaches, unfamiliar food and the feeling of sun cream or different clothes against the skin.

need for comfort and regulation. Their preferred activity does not become less valuable simply because it is repetitive, screen-based or different from what other families are doing.

Before an outing, consider what your child may find difficult and what could help. A sensory kit might include:

Parents may also wish to check venue information in advance, including accessibility arrangements, quiet opening times, toilet facilities and whether re-entry is allowed.

Build extra time into transitions

Moving from one activity to another can take longer than expected, particularly when a child is deeply engaged, anxious about what comes next or still processing an instruction. Try not to create a schedule that only works when everything happens precisely on time.

Allow additional time for getting dressed, leaving the house and moving between activities. Some children may find phrases such as “after breakfast” or “when this programme finishes” easier than being told that something must happen at exactly 10am.

Warnings can also help. Parents might give a 15-minute reminder, followed by ten-minute and five-minute prompts before leaving or changing activity. The aim is to give the child time to process the transition, rather than expecting an immediate response.

Give your child genuine choices

Children may cope better with a new routine when they are involved in creating it.

That does not mean handing over every decision. Instead, offer manageable choices such as: “Would you like to go to the park in the morning or after lunch?” or “Would you prefer swimming or a day at home?”

Include activities connected to your child’s interests, even when those interests do not resemble conventional summer entertainment. A child who wants to spend time arranging collections, researching a favourite subject, replaying a familiar game or watching the same programme may be meeting a genuine

Your child may refuse an activity they were previously excited about. A day out may need to end early. The schedule may change, or everyone may simply be too tired. This does not mean you have failed.

You know your child better than an online checklist, parenting trend or carefully edited social-media post does. Advice can be useful, but it should never become another impossible standard against which families judge themselves.

The best summer for an autistic child may not be the busiest, most photogenic or most “analogue”. It may involve familiar meals, repeated activities, screen time, plenty of notice, quiet afternoons and more rest than you expected.

Forget creating the perfect summer.

Focus on creating one in which your child feels safe, understood and able to be themselves.

Mark Blakey, Founder and CEO of Autism Parenting Magazine, said: “Summer is increasingly presented to parents as something they must carefully curate: a limited number of weeks in which they are expected to create magical memories, arrange constant activities and keep their children happily entertained. That pressure can leave families feeling as though they are doing something wrong when their summer looks quieter, less spontaneous or less photogenic than the version they see online.

“For autistic children, inclusion does not mean expecting them to participate in every activity in the same way as everyone else. Bereavement can leave people feeling sad, lost, and sometimes confused, but an appropriate funeral and memorial can bring great comfort and peace. At the Willows Natural Burial Ground, the tranquil surroundings of wildflower meadows, woodland, and ponds can provide great solace for those left behind as they remember the person or people they have lost.

The Willows is a 10-acre family-owned natural burial site near South Croxton, with commanding views of the Charnwood countryside, where people can be buried in hand dug graves in eco-friendly coffins or caskets, made of biodegradable materials such as cardboard, willow, wool or banana leaf to name a few.

Conversely, their ashes can be buried or subsurface scattered, either in bio-degradable urns or simply poured into or onto the ground.

A range of commemorative memorials are available, made of natural materials such as Welsh slate, and wood, while many people choose to remember their loved ones by planting a tree or native rose bush.

Owners Chris and Jenny Scroby and their family, have been transforming the bare fields with extensive tree and bulb planting since opening in 2011, inviting families of the

buried or pre-purchased plots, to join in at planting weekends. They recently purchased another 3,750 native British bluebell, snowdrop and daffodil bulbs, whilst simultaneously raising money for local charities.

The Willows caters for people of all faiths or no faith. The site can accommodate graveside funerals or act solely as a burial site after a service elsewhere.

If families do have a service on site, their fee includes provision of a small pop-up shelter, with limited seating and soft drinks for those attending.

The natural burial option is a cost-effective alternative to a traditional cemetery burial or cremation. Chris and Jenny work with the family’s chosen funeral directors to ensure everything goes smoothly, whilst respecting the parameters set out to protect and promote the site as a natural, wildlife friendly environment.

Chris says: “We’re very pleased with our progress, which we see as our contribution in giving something back to nature and the environment.”
