Across Nottinghamshire, young people are being invited to take part in something truly extraordinary – helping to bring a new life-saving helicopter to our skies.

Lincolnshire & Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance has launched its brandnew Heli Heroes Schools’ Challenge, a campaign designed to inspire, educate and empower primary school pupils while raising the final funds needed for a second air ambulance.

At its heart, Heli Heroes is about showing children that they can make a real difference in their community. Through creative, accessible fundraising activities – from bake sales and sponsored challenges to talent shows and sports events – pupils can work together to support a cause that could one day save the life of someone they love.

But this campaign is about much more than fundraising. It’s also a powerful educational opportunity. Schools that sign up receive a full activity pack, including curriculumlinked lesson plans, STEM-focused learning resources and assembly materials. Pupils can explore subjects such as aviation, emergency medicine and teamwork, linking classroom learning to real-world impact in a meaningful and memorable way.

The campaign is built around the “109 Challenge”, inspired by the new AW109

helicopter. Whether it’s running 109 laps, baking 109 cakes or creating a unique challenge of their own, every effort contributes to a shared goal – helping to fund a vital service that operates entirely thanks to public support.

To add even more excitement, schools taking part have the chance to win a truly unforgettable experience: a visit from the air ambulance itself or a behindthe-scenes tour of the charity’s headquarters, giving pupils the opportunity to meet the crew and see the helicopter up close.

TRENT ROCKETS HAVE ANNOUNCED FOUR LIVE MUSIC ACTS FOR THE 2026 SEASON, WITH VIRAL SENSATION, DECO, TOPPING THE BILL The Nottingham-based team also announced the return of Charlie Burley as the team’s live DJ for matchdays.

Sam Hurst also returns as Matchday host for 2026, joined by Rising Host Jack Fisher.

Alongside the up-and-coming artists performing during matchdays, Trent Rockets’ resident DJ and BBC Midlands radio host, Charlie Burley is returning, bringing the festival atmosphere to Trent Bridge. Bringing the energy alongside Charlie will be dedicated matchday host Sam Hurst, and rising Host Jack Fisher.

Trent Rockets’ home seasonopener against London Spirit on Sunday 26th July will see Nottingham-based hyperpop singer-songwriter Emidora bring her PinkPantheress and Charli XCXinfluenced tracks to Trent Bridge to kick-off the season in style.

Her performance will be followed by an appearance from Eighty Eight Miles as the Rockets take on SunRisers Leeds on Sunday 2nd August. The female-fronted indie rock band have proved a hit at the Isle of Wight, Great Escape and Y Not Festivals, and supported The Lottery Winners on tour.

Indie-pop star Terrianne, meanwhile, will perform a highenergy indie-pop set as Trent Rockets welcome Birmingham Phoenix on Wednesday 5 August.

The bill at Trent Bridge will be topped by viral sensation Deco, with the five-piece taking to the stage in front of thousands of fans on Monday 10th August for Trent Rockets men’s and women’s final group-stage home fixture vs Southern Brave. Known for their 80s style covers and stadium-ready pop songs, the group count Nile Rogers and the Gallagher brothers as fans and are the perfect fit for the final group game of the biggest party in cricket!

This summer will see Trent Rockets return for a sixth season, with the 2022 men’s champions led by three-time title-winning captain Sam Billings, and the women’s side captained by Australia star Ash Gardner. Rid yourself of items of no further use and create some much-needed space around yourself. If you are still troubled and concerned about a certain romantic relationship or friendship, take control of the situation and insist on some honest dialogue between you both. Remaining in denial mode is of no use resolve anything. If you are interested in moving house or purchasing additional property, keep your eyes open for bargains that will be coming onto the market soon.

Someone who has admired you for a long time will make their feelings known and this will have one of two effects.

You will either feel extremely flattered or repulsed. You have numerous decisions to make that could affect your finances or status. Accept social invitations, as it will do you good to get dressed up and socialise with people who are full of sparkling conversation. If you are interested in booking a holiday, do it now whilst it’s on your mind.

You may feel somewhat bewildered by all that is happening in your life at the moment and totally unprepared for the roller coaster emotions that appear to be surfacing. Perhaps in the past you have suppressed feelings and pushed them down to the point where you simply did not think you would have to ever deal with them, until now. You are not in a race. What is meant for you will not go past you. Don’t force doors open that want to remain shut because there is nothing for your there.

People who are all show, full of false promises and supposed good intentions are in your hemisphere right now and they will succeed in driving you mad. Anyone can say anything when they are three miles away from home. Actions speak louder than words so its important you don’t allow yourself to be sucked in by their fantasies. A house move will go through reasonably smoothly giving you the opportunity of starting a new life and flowing in a new direction to a place of peace and calm.

It will take a little while for a certain piece of news to finally sink in. You will find yourself walking around in total disbelief and shock, but this is how bazaar life can be at times. Someone from your past who you never ever thought you would see or hear from again will contact you. Take care over your finances and don’t agree to lend money to anyone, otherwise you will experience difficulties in getting it paid back. Prepare yourself for a number of monumental changes in aspects of your life, but for the better.

Domestic upheavals will continue as you endeavour to rebuild part of your life again. You may be tempted to contact someone you have let down previously, but too afraid in case you are rejected. Legal matters will need your attention and there are a number of decisions ahead that you have been dragging your heels about making because you were hoping matters would resolve themselves. Give close relatives and loved ones your attention, as they need to spend quality time with you right now.

Someone you see as a friend, who has strong intuitive powers that will put you on the right track and point the truth out to you even though it hurts. If you are having second thoughts about a holiday arrangement, do the sensible thing and cancel it. Your life is most definitely changing at a rapid rate and you would be wise not to keep on doing the same old things and socialising in the same old places over and over again. Its time to start spreading your wings and flying high in the clouds.

A number of people will pay you beautiful compliments and tell you what a special person you really are. You are beginning to come into your own nowadays and re establishing yourself as someone who is much admired.

The darkness you experienced a few months ago has now ended and you are entering calmer waters and a happier phase, where you will meet new friends, begin to learn subjects close to your heart. Pay attention to your health and look at ways of improving our diet.

You may be experiencing feelings of regret over the way you handled an emotional break up or business matter.

Perhaps you were too hasty in making your decisions and feel too stubborn to rectify things. A job interview will become more and more attractive by the minute because you can see ways of earning an excellent income. It could also mean you will travel to a number of faraway places meeting new people whilst enjoying some very unique experiences.

You will be busy de cluttering every cupboard and drawer in your home and preparing to give yourself and your habitat a major make over. Because you confidence is growing daily, you are no longer afraid to tell people what you think and voice your opinions. Listen to your gut feelings at all times and do not be pushed into doing anything that you feel would be detrimental to your well being. If you have thought about writing a book at some time, start making notes and keep a diary. Anything is possible if you put your mind to it.

You will be proved right about someone you had your doubts about and will be in the position of helping a friend make an enormous decision. If you are busy improving your home and buying and selling furniture and fittings, you will come across some incredible bargains.

A new romance could start with someone you knew a long time ago but were just friends with initially. You are in one of the strongest positions ever known and about to make a number of exiting conquests and achievements.

A make or break situation affecting either your personal life or business will have an extraordinary affect on your future, so its important that you don’t jump to the wrong conclusions and shoot yourself in the foot by acting impulsively regretting your actions later.

An invitation to attend a celebration should be accepted. You adore dressing up and mingling with interesting people, so take every opportunity to enjoy life to the full. A financial worry will begin to slowly ease.

Kushi-ya (meaning skewer shop) is a Japanese inspired independent restaurant in the heart of Nottingham serving up a wide range of izakaya style dishes.

Having been booked for months we were fizzing with excitement about returning to Kushi Ya. We have been regulars since lockdown but after the attention of The Guardian review it turned from ‘Let’s go to Kushi Ya on Friday’ to “Tried to book but they only have a 18.00 or 21.30 table……”. It deserves all the plaudits but I selfishly miss the casual approach to booking that we used to enjoy.

Knowing this would be the first time I reviewed it I decided to stick to our favourites (in all honesty I couldn’t walk out of there without ordering the pork shoulder and prawn toasts, they should be mandatory) and throw in a few new dishes.

The approach and dining room are unspectacular, so if you are expecting grand you will be disappointed. Hidden down an alley off Long Row, finding the restaurant is half the battle.

When we arrived every table

(except ours) was full. The table next to us immediately started singing the praises of the pork shoulder telling us it was their first visit – I felt a sense of de ja vu as I had done exactly the same.

Sharing praise about certain dishes with the table next to us/ anyone that will listen. I scanned the specials board and one of my favourites had a line through it – I mourned a little for the Japanese sausage I haven’t had the chance to try in a couple of years (due to it being off the specials/sold out) RIP delicious hotdog skewers.

Wake over, we started with Furikake Prawn Toast, Shrimp Crackers and Grilled Edemame.

I could write a whole paragraph about the prawn toasts, they are the most delicious snack.

Large whole prawns wrapped in crispy fried bread, striped with a mellow mayo and scattered with an addictive mix of popped rice and nori. A kind

I like eating out, trying new restaurants and being on the receiving end of great hospitality.

I am a mum with 2 children (one baby, one 9 year old) so I include how the places I visit work for families.

I have worked in bars, cafes, restaurants and pubs for most of my life.

Good places should be supported, celebrated and shared.

of chinese stlye bombay mix that adds texture and flavour. The edemame are compelling too – seared and caramelised with chilli and salt, The Northerner cannot leave them alone once they are delivered. As we made our way through the starters I watched as more people ascended the stairs looking for a spare table or patiently waiting for their table to become vacant. When Kushi Ya tell you they need a table back by a certain time they are not playing, people were still arriving after 21.00.

For mains we ordered the soy braised pork shoulder, grilled lamb chop, prawn katsu sando and spring onion tempura. The pork shoulder bypasses any scoring system. It is both mine, and The Northerners favourite. It tends to come out the kitchen before the other mains (so you can enjoy it as a ‘middle course’, like aromatic duck at a cantonese) and has the theatre of being a dish you build yourself, with tempura scraps, pickles and sauce in a tiny ketchup bottle. For normal people this probably means they can build to their preferences, a bit less of something they don’t like, a bit more of something they do. For me and The Northerner it is more an exercise in how much we can get in the leaf before making a mess of ourselves and the

immediate vicinity. We pulled apart the tender pork and waved goodbye to our table manners.

The Lamb chop deserves a special mention, not to The Northerners taste but I loved the really subtle coolness of the yoghurt against the richness of the meat and fat on the chop. We agreed to disagree. The Prawn Katsu Sando was so soft, with thin batter and gently seasoned shrimp, a joy to eat. It has evolved from the dish I had a year or so ago to make it a lot easier to eat with less lettuce which was welcome given the joy of Kushi Ya is getting to try so many things.

The Spring onion tempura was the final dish and tasted like sour cream and chives – the light batter adding texture without too much oiliness. We enjoyed it……. but not as much as the sweetcorn fritters we have had before.

We finished with a pudding, a new addition to my standard Kushi Ya order after not really liking their Tira Miso years ago and making the mistake of not trying the other options. I ordered Black Sugar Parfait on recommendation from the server and did not regret it. Dense with sweet creaminess the parfait melted slowly and had a heft in the mouth that

is usually lost with frozen desserts. It is eye wateringly sweet but as that is my love language I finished it all happily.

A lot has been written about Kushi Ya so it is difficult to say something new but after all these years their consistancy inspires awe. 5+ years is a long time in Nottingham for a restaurant to remain popular and speaks to the cleverly curated menu and specials, unassuming location and great service.

I always worried this review would turn into a praise dump/love letter but I am just accepting and embracing it. I love you Kushi Ya, don’t ever change XX

The start of the popular Vineyard Tours for 2026 are running throughout the summer.

but here's why beans are worth revisiting!

A quiet food revolution is underway in Britain, and it begins with beans! At a time when everyone is struggling with rising living costs, increasing the proportion of cheaper beans and pulses in meals to reduce the more expensive meat content, makes perfect sense, and it’s what our ancestors would always have done when meat was less readily available.

But there’s another very good reason that nutritionists, food campaigners and regenerative farmers are calling for a major revival in pulse consumption.

Growing evidence shows that beans, lentils and peas could play a powerful role in improving both public health and environmental sustainability.

Dr Lucy Williamson, registered public nutritionist, gut health expert and author, explains how: “Rich in fibre, plant protein, iron, folate, magnesium and gut-friendly nutrients, pulses are increasingly being recognised as one of the simplest, cheapest and most effective ways to tackle some of the UK’s biggest health challenges, including low fibre intake, poor gut health, rising rates of type 2 diabetes and heart disease.

“But, despite their benefits, onethird of Britons eat just one beanbased meal each week, while only 4% of UK adults currently achieve recommended fibre targets. Public health guidance recommends eating pulses daily, yet they remain largely overlooked in our modern diets dominated by ultra-processed foods.”

The Food Foundation’s ‘Bang in Some Beans’ initiative is encouraging households to rediscover pulses from lentils and chickpeas to Britain’s only native bean - the Fava Bean. Society

needs to value beans and pulses not only for their nutritional value, but also for the role they can play in supporting climatefriendly farming and even British food security.

Lucy again: “Unlike many crops, legumes work in partnership with soil microbes through nodules on their roots, naturally fixing nitrogen back into the soil and reducing the need for synthetic fertilisers. Their deep root systems also help improve soil structure, water retention and biodiversity, making them valuable crops within regenerative farming systems.

“They’re literally the ultimate ‘soil to gut’ food! They nourish both the soil microbiome and our own gut microbiome. They’re also one of the clearest examples of food that supports both our health and our planet too.”

Research is also exploring new ways to bring pulses into everyday foods. At the University of Reading, the ‘Raising the Pulse’ project is investigating the use of British-grown fava beans in bread to improve fibre, protein and iron intake while reducing reliance on imported soya.

Long celebrated in food cultures around the world, from Indian dhal and Tuscan ribollita, to Mexican frijoles and French cassoulet, pulses are increasingly being viewed not as niche meat alternatives, but as affordable, flavourful whole foods in their own right.

Eating just two bean-based meals each week can bring meaningful benefits for gut health, heart health and the environment too, while helping reconnect shoppers with healthier, more sustainable food systems.

Ingredients: • 150g mixed dried beans eg Red Fox Carlin/ Yellow Pea/ Red kidney • 2 small red onions • 4 garlic cloves • 2 tins chopped tomatoes • 2 red peppers • 4 fresh chillies, chopped and seeds removed • 1 bunch coriander • 2 tsp dried coriander • 2 tsp dried cumin • 2 tsp smoked paprika • Cold pressed rapeseed oil Method: 1. Soak the dried beans in water overnight. The following day change the water and cook the beans according to instruction.

2. Thickly slice and grill the red peppers to blacken very slightly.

3. Slice one red onion and grate two garlic cloves.

Sweat down in a pan with

a splash of cold pressed rapeseed oil on a low heat.

4. Add the tomatoes and 50ml of water to the onions. Add the cumin, smoked paprika and salt and pepper to taste.

5. Blend the fresh chilies with the coriander stalks, 2 garlic cloves and half the red pepper to make fresh chilli paste.

6. Season the sauce and add the fresh chilli paste.

Add the cooked beans and check seasoning again. Slice the remaining red pepper and add in.

You may like to add more cumin/paprika to taste.

7. Serve with chopped coriander leaves and a dollop of Greek yoghurt. desired consistency, if necessary, then either serve immediately or keep in the fridge for up to three days.

SOUTHWELL MINSTER THIS SUMMER Southwell Minster, the cathedral church of Nottinghamshire, is delighted to be hosting Luke Jerram’s highly-acclaimed art installation Helios this summer.

The incredible installation of Helios, also known as The Sun, measures seven metres in diameter and features detailed NASA imagery of the Sun’s surface. The artwork provides the opportunity to see our home planet’s star on this scale, floating in three-dimensions, like never before.

On display 29 July – 15 August, the artwork is a fusion of solar imagery, sunlight and a specially created surround sound composition by Duncan Speakman and Sarah Anderson.

Tickets cost just £5/£3, and under 5s go free.

Last entry, 30 minutes before the end of each day. Dogs on leads welcome.

Helios, in ancient Greek mythology, is the god who personifies the Sun. He drove a four-horse chariot across the sky each day, giving the earth its hours and seasons.

both saw around 11,000 visitors so we’re expecting this to be equally as popular – how often do you get to safely look at the sun and see the finer details without expensive safety equipment? So this really is a fantastic and rare opportunity to see the sun like never before!

On the opening day, Wednesday 29 July, the Nottingham Astronomical Society will be supporting the Helios exhibition.

Weather permitting, between 10am and 2pm, members of the society will be offering live views of the Sun through special solar telescopes situated outside the south door of the Minster. Visitors will have the opportunity to ask the astronomers questions about the sun so do come along!

The imagery for the artwork has been compiled using photographs of the Sun provided by Astrophotographer Dr Stuart Green (taken between May 2018 to June 2024) and NASA observations of the Sun, with guidance from solar scientist, Professor Lucie Green of University College London (UCL).

Booking online in advance is recommended but not essential, but during busy times those looking to pay on the door may have to wait and some sessions will inevitably sell out in advance.

AT LINCOLN CATHEDRAL Lincoln Cathedral is delighted to welcome Threads Through the Bible, an extraordinary exhibition by acclaimed textile artist Jacqui Parkinson. Bringing together Threads Through Creation and Threads Through Revelation, the exhibition offers visitors a unique opportunity to encounter some of the Bible's most powerful stories through vibrant, large-scale works of art.

Using a rich combination of textiles, paint, metallic leathers and gold leaf, Parkinson transforms familiar biblical themes into colourful and imaginative scenes that capture both the beauty and drama of Scripture. From the wonder of creation in Genesis to the vivid visions of Revelation, the exhibition invites visitors to see these ancient stories afresh.

The school summer holidays promise to be another action-packed time at the Nene Valley Railway, with a packed programme of family days out, dining experiences, driving experiences and enthusiast events.

Families can make the most of the holidays with Kids for a Quid, running every Wednesday throughout August. THE Sand DRAGON Families are invited to discover a world of magic, adventure and imagination this summer as Theatrix Arts brings its enchanting production, The Sand Dragon, to Mansfield Museum and Art Gallery on Friday 7 August.

Perfect for young children and their grown-ups, The Sand Dragon tells the heartwarming story of Edie and her Daddy, whose ordinary seaside holiday becomes anything but ordinary when they discover a mysterious pebble with the power to grant one wish.

But what will Edie wish for?

Packed with captivating storytelling, original songs, beautiful handcrafted puppets, magical transformations and plenty of surprises, The Sand Dragon is an interactive theatre experience designed to delight audiences of all ages. The production offers a wonderful introduction to live theatre for younger audiences while providing plenty of fun, laughter and wonder for the whole family.

The Sand Dragon will be performed at Mansfield Museum and Art Gallery on Leeming Street (NG18 1NG) on Friday 7 August at 11am and 2pm. The show is approximately 40 minutes long, followed by a puppetmaking workshop – all for just £6 per person.

The National Space Centre is inviting families to step back in time this summer with a special series of dinosaur-themed cinema screenings taking place inside the UK’s largest planetarium.

RETFORD'S Market Square will come alive this August bank holiday Sunday as Party in the Square returns for an afternoon of free live music, entertainment and family fun.

Taking place on Sunday 30 August from 2pm to 7.30pm, the popular North Notts BID event will bring a packed programme of tribute performances to the heart of Retford, with visitors invited to bring their picnic blankets, deck chairs and dancing shoes for an afternoon of entertainment.

Funk and disco band Le Freak will be this year’s headline act, closing the event from 6.30pm with a celebration of Chic and Nile Rodgers’ biggest hits. They will be preceded by a host of talented tribute performers bringing the sounds of K-Pop Demon Hunters, Bruno Mars, Arctic Monkeys and Benson Boone to the stage, creating a packed

Mansfield Carnival has quickly become one of the town’s most anticipated annual celebrations — on Saturday 1 August 2026 will be a day where the community comes together, cultures shine, and the town centre bursts into life with music, movement and joy.

What makes Mansfield Carnival so special is its open armed spirit, it’s a free to attend and welcoming to everyone, the event draws inspiration from global carnival traditions while proudly celebrating the diverse cultures that make up our local community. Visitors can expect a full day of entertainment woven through the heart of the town centre with live performances, DJs, dancers, face painters and walkabout entertainers will filling every corner with energy.

An international street food court will offer flavours from around the world on Mansfield Market Place, along with local makers bringing an extra layer of personality to the festivities. Whether you’re five or fifty, there will be something to make you smile.

At 12pm, the beating heart of the celebration begins: the carnival parade, including Donna Fox with her incredibly impressive costumes, local dance production Mproduction Time 2 show and our very own wonderful Green Power group. Starting on Leeming Street at Mansfield Museum and Art Gallery, this spectacular procession will flood the streets with dazzling costumes, drumming troupes, dancers and community performers. It’s the moment the town truly comes alive — a moving tapestry of colour and sound that captures the essence of carnival culture.

Once the parade winds its way through the town, the party continues with a packed programme of live music and performances from 12pm to 5pm, being kicked off by the returning Punjabi Drummers, with local choirs and young artists as well as our own Make A Start group.

Mansfield Carnival isn’t just an event — it’s a celebration of who we are. It’s a reminder that community is something we create together, and that joy is contagious when shared. So gather your friends, bring the family, and dust off your brightest outfits.

Bakewell

Bakewell is perhaps Derbyshire's best-known market town and is famous for the original Bakewell Pudding.

Belper

The Monsal Trail

The Monsal Trail is one of Derbyshire's most popular outdoor attractions.

Following a former railway line for approximately 8½ miles (13.5 km), the route stretches between Bakewell and Blackwell Mill near Buxton.

The trail is ideal for walkers, cyclists, and families because it is largely flat and traffic free. Along the route, visitors pass through impressive railway tunnels and cross spectacular viaducts overlooking Monsal Dale.

The National Tramway Museum has welcomed the start of summer in spectacular style, with over a thousand visitors enjoying its recent Past Times – Homefront event in glorious sunshine as the season's second heatwave arrived.

Families stepped back into the 1940s with live music, historical displays, wartime activities and the unmistakable sight and sound of a Dakota flyover, creating a memorable day out and setting the tone for a busy summer ahead.

Set high above the beautiful Derwent Valley in Crich, the National Tramway Museum continues to offer one of the East Midlands' most unique family attractions.

Visitors can enjoy unlimited rides aboard beautifully restored vintage trams, travel through a recreated period street and explore woodland walks, sculpture trails, exhibitions and play areas—all included within admission. There's plenty to enjoy between rides too, from the Tram Stop Café and retro sweet shop to the Red Lion Pub and vintage Matlock Meadows ice cream van. Four-legged family members are welcome too, making it an ideal day out for everyone.

With the school holidays just around the corner, the museum is preparing for another exciting programme of family events. One of the most popular dates in the calendar, Dinosaur Day, returns on 25th July, bringing giant prehistoric creatures to life across the museum site.

The 93rd Ashover Show will take place on Wednesday 12 August 2026.

Ashover Show is enormously proud of its reputation as one of the finest traditional agricultural shows in the country. The Centre Ring will start with Local Show Jumping from 8.00am to 10.00am after which the President, Mr. John Cook will arrive on the Showground. We have a full timetable of events in the Centre Ring including the Vintage Vehicle parade, Tug of War, Private Driving, parade of hounds, The Heavy Horse Ridden and Dray Classes, The Grand Parade, Fancy Dress and then the BS Showjumping. This year we are delighted to announce that the Centre Ring display will be Ridgeside Falconry and the Little Nipper display of racing terriers who are always extremely popular and entertaining.

The Shire Horses will parade in their ring at the side of the Members’ Enclosure starting at 10.30am. We have livestock rings showing the finest cattle and sheep in the area including a variety of rare breeds and visitors can watch the excitement as the judges make their decisions. All our sections have classes for young people, something vital for the continuation of the Show. The Livestock Grand Parade will take place in the Centre Ring at 3.00pm and visitors will be able to see the champion Shire Horses, Cattle and Sheep parade around the ring with their colourful sashes and rosettes and presented to the President, who will award them with their trophies.

The Light Horse Section will run throughout the day with classes for ridden, in hand, working hunter, games and of course the highlight will be the Fancy Dress Class,

judged by the President, in the Centre Ring. There will be both affiliated BS and unaffiliated show jumping so there really is something for everyone.

The Poultry Section, although unable to display any birds, will have an extremely colourful display of eggs. Next door will be the extremely popular Dog Show with classes for both pedigree and non-pedigree dogs.

The Vintage Tractor ring will showcase around 150 of the best local vehicles. Visitors will be able to relax in the expanded Village Green area whilst listening to the Ashover Brass Band. The children can watch the traditional Punch and Judy Show or pay a visit to the popular Rides and Slides area including the Jumpers Carousel and vintage fairground organ. This year we are delighted to welcome Hobby Horse jumping to the show where you can practice your skills and enter one of the competitions; you are welcome to bring your own hobby horse if you have one or borrow one on the day.

The Horticulture Marquee is an absolute must for visitors with its stunning displays which just get better every year, as does the Appetising Ashover Marquee, which will have over 20 of the absolute best local food producers from around the area. A visit to the Craft Marquee should also not to be missed with over 50

exhibitors displaying the fantastic range of local talent on show.

Out on the showground there will be approximately 200 trade stands, selling everything from farm machinery to bird tables, there really was something to interest everyone! When visitors have looked around everything the Show has to offer, they can simply sit and relax at one of the many and varied food outlets around the ground.

If you would like to become a member, tickets are available through the website. This will give you access to the members’ enclosure where you can sit and relax by the ring side and enjoy a private bar and catering along with members’ only toilets. Car parks surround the show ground and parking is free. Dogs are very welcome on a lead.

We organise business support sessions across the year on topics including sustainability, marketing and AI. Our team are always open to suggestions from businesses regarding topics they’d like to see, so please do contact us with any ideas you have.

Our next session will be Wellbeing at Work on Wednesday 1st July, which will bring together a wide range of organisations that support workforce wellbeing, including Your Health Notts and Talking Therapies. During the morning session attendees will learn about the local support available to help improve physical and mental health at work.

An expert business advisory service is on offer to local businesses through our links to Nottinghamshire County Council. This involves 1-to-1 guidance which provide business owners with the opportunity to

discuss how to grow, build resilience and achieve goals. This support is offered on an ad hoc basis or at one of our business support surgeries, with the next session on Thursday 10th September in Collingham.

Alongside this, we are excited to be partnering with the Federation of Small Businesses to host a Nottinghamshire Business Boot Camp on 8th July, and our annual Economic Growth Conference will return on Thursday 8th October.

New investment is going into regeneration schemes in our towns, such as the creation of retail units and a public services hub in Ollerton to boost local connectivity. More investment is on the horizon with the announcement of the Pride in Place programme

We also work with local businesses to create tailored retail campaigns aimed at boosting local spend, such as our recently launched Newark and Sherwood Gift Card which now has over 100 retailers signed up.

External schemes include the dualling of the A46 to ease journey times, and Middlebeck, a development adding 7,000 homes and employment floorspace south of Newark. Meanwhile, the Tritax Park logistics site offers opportunities for enterprises to join a growing regional logistics sector.

Up until then, the city was limited to what we now know as the historic centre, one of the largest of its kind in Europe, and it was not until the late 19th-century that Valencia began to grow urbanistically, finally extending to include the 19 districts that it is composed of today.

BY THE SEA

Valencia has 19 km of beaches that are perfectly reachable by the public bus and tram network, as well as the cycle lanes.

They can also be visited by car, as they all have plenty of parking spaces. To the south of Valencia, the remoter beaches can be found, next to the Dehesa Natural Park, whilst the urban beaches are next to the marina. The beach promenade (paseo maritimo) connects the Las Arenas,

Valencia has a green carpet covering more than two million square metres. The Cabecera Park, the largest in Europe, crowns the old Turia riverbed to the west of the city. It is here that we find the start of the Turia Gardens, a large, traffic-free green space measuring some 10 km in length that enables visitors to cross the city on foot or bike almost to the shores of the Mediterranean Sea.

One of Skegness’s top attractions is back for the 2026 season! The character buses Rocky, Sandy, Shelly, Candy, Pierre, Salty, Sunny, Teddy, Milly, Rolly, Sweetie and Scoop will come out for more fun in the sun this holiday season to explore Skegness with residents and holiday-makers alike.

July is one of the most beautiful times of the year for our outdoor spaces. Summer colour is in full bloom, and beds, borders, patio containers, and hanging baskets are filled with vibrant displays of foliage and fragrance.

It’s time to enjoy your garden’s greatness and make the most of the summer. Of course, there are still some maintenance jobs you can do to keep your space in tip top condition, encourage your flowers to continue blooming, and invite wildlife into your garden for a visit.

Be sure to watch the weather carefully this month in case a heatwave is forecast, as if there is, your plants will need extra care.

We’re sharing our tips to follow to ensure your plants, flowers, and the rest of your garden is well looked after this July.

What can I do in my garden in July?

While we have our fingers crossed for a warm July, the hotter weather can cause your flowers to struggle, so it’s important to take care of the plants you’ve worked hard on growing this far.

During hot spells, check your beds, borders, pots, and baskets to see if the soil has dried out. If so, give your plants a good drink of water – some smaller plants might need watered twice a day.

Regularly deadhead your bedding, container, and basket plants, and any other repeat-flowering perennials to enjoy a longer display of

blooms in your garden.

This is also a great way to keep your garden looking great during the summer months, as it gets rid of any wilted or dying flower heads to make way for new ones.

Your flowers may benefit from a liquid feed, particularly your container plants, roses, and our outdoor Plant of the Month, dahlias.

When the weather gets warmer, cut back on your water usage and keep your grass looking green instead by raising the cutting height of your lawn mower blades when trimming your grass. Don’t worry if your grass browns in the heat, once it rains again it should return to its usual state quite quickly.

After cutting your lawn, don’t forget to finish it off by trimming the edges with a grass trimmer or edging shears to keep it looking neat and orderly.

Prune any fast-growing hedges in your garden, like Leyland cypress. Make sure to tie-in any ramblers too as they continue to grow.

Weeds thrive in dry, warm weather, so continue hoeing any weeds around your beds or vegetable patches in dry weather, as this gives you the best chance of not allowing them to re-root.

Flowers to plant this month

Summer is all about vibrant colours and lush greenery, and the best way to create an exciting display is through summer bedding plants.

You can put them

in hanging baskets, borders, or pots, and you don’t need a lot of gardening experience to plant them out.

Marigolds, begonias, and geraniums are all bedding plants that are relatively easy to grow, love the sunshine, and add beautiful colours in your garden.

Bring the calming fragrance of lavender to your outdoor space and plant this perennial herb in your borders or large containers. Lavender also attracts bees and other pollinators to your garden, just be sure to prune after its flowering period and it will bloom for years.

July is the last month to sow delphiniums, which should flower by next summer for a relaxing, cottage-garden feel.

Hydrangeas add instant impact to borders and add colour that lasts well into autumn.

What fruit and veg can I grow in July?

It’s a good time to start planning the vegetables you might want to grow in time for your favourite autumn and winter dishes, especially your Christmas dinner!

This month is the perfect time to start sowing many autumn vegetables which you can harvest and use later in the year.

Wildlife/Indoor gardening If you have a bird bath in your garden, keep it topped up with fresh water and make sure to clean it whenever it starts looking grubby. During this time of year, many birds will be in competition for food too, so keep your bird feeders full and consider having multiple feeders on display in your garden.

For those with a pond, keep an eye out for frogs and toads which might start to appear this month. Plant foliage around your pond to keep these critters safe from predators.

Former Nottingham Para celebrates 90th birthday

Former British paratrooper Leslie Clarkstone marked his 90th birthday with a special celebration at The Grand care home in Nottingham, surrounded by family, friends and a few surprise guests who dropped in to help commemorate the milestone occasion.

Nottingham-born Leslie, who served with the British Army’s elite Parachute Regiment, spent his military career as part of the 3rd Battalion, one of the Army’s most renowned airborne infantry units, famous for its maroon beret and demanding training.

During his years of service, Leslie took part in many missions including a deployment to the Suez Canal.

Reflecting on his time in the regiment, Leslie recalls the intensity of life as a paratrooper and the discipline required to serve in one of the Army’s most respected units. He said: “I was in the 3rd Battalion Parachute Regiment. The training was very hard work, and you had to be fit.”

Now celebrating his 90th birthday, Leslie still vividly remembers his years of service and the camaraderie, resilience and readiness that defined life in the Parachute Regiment, where troops were trained to respond rapidly to international crises, evacuation operations and urgent military emergencies.

He was delighted to be surprised on his birthday by a veteran paratrooper from Nottingham Paras and also a representative from the Royal British Legion, both of whom dropped into The Grand to share the celebration and

raise a toast to Les’ special day.

Home manager at The Grand, Tracy Johnston, added: “Les has led an incredible life and has many stories to tell from his service in the wartime years.

It was wonderful to be able to surprise him today with a visitor from Nottingham Paras; he’s had a super time catching up, sharing stories and remembering the years gone by.”

Full of stories, Leslie continues: “My dad was in the Navy, so I spent a lot of time at my grandparents' house while he was away. I joined the Army when I was 17 and a half years old. I remember walking past the Nottingham Recruitment Centre, where they were recruiting people to join the Parachute

Regiment. I thought to myself that I would like to give that a try. When I got home, my mam went barmy about it.

“I still feel upset when I think about all my friends who have gone. I made some great friends during my time in the Paras. Every year, we would have a reunion, share a few drinks, have a good laugh, and enjoy a singalong. I am very proud of my service in the maroon beret brigade, it was a huge part of my life and it’s wonderful to have a visit from these veteran friends today.”

A resident from Derbyshire care home has introduced a new set of children’s activity packs to help make visits more enjoyable and welcoming for younger family members.

Milford House, part of the family-run Milford Care group, has launched the packs after resident Suzanne Palmer, 81, suggested a way to help younger visitors feel more involved during visits. Drawing on her experience as a former teacher, Suzanne came up with activities that would appeal to children of different ages and help them feel more comfortable in the home.

The packs include a range of activities such as wordsearches, colouring pages, dot-to-dots and a special bumble bee hunt around the home, where children are encouraged to spot 10 hidden bees placed in different locations.

Speaking about the inspiration behind the packs, Suzanne said: “I noticed that there were more children visiting family in the home and I wanted a way to engage them. I’m always on the lookout for ways to involve children and families, as I think it is very important.”

“I recalled the activities children enjoyed when I was a teacher and we tried to tailor the activity packs for all ages. It makes me feel good to see the children getting involved in something worthwhile and thrive whilst in the home. I feel that if children have a good experience when they visit, they will be more inclined to visit again.”

The idea came about through conversations between Suzanne and the home’s team, who were keen to support her in bringing it to life. Suzanne now hopes the project will encourage others to share their own ideas and talents.

Nicole Thompson, Home Manager at Milford House, said:“What makes this initiative so special is that it came directly from Suzanne. Our Montessori ethos is about recognising what each resident can do, rather than focusing on what they may need support with, and creating opportunities for them to make choices, share their skills and contribute with purpose.“Suzanne’s activity packs are a lovely example of that in action. With the right encouragement, her experience as a teacher has helped shape something valuable for children, families and the wider home community. The idea has also inspired

further intergenerational activities, including Milo, our new mascot bear, whose name was chosen by residents and staff.”

Children and families can take Milo on their adventures and add photos to his scrapbook when he returns. So far, Milo has been on holiday to Turkey with Geoff’s grandson Jack and his family, to see Oliver! at the theatre with Suzanne and her family and skiing with June’s family. The scrapbook has become a talking point for residents, families and staff, creating another way to strengthen connections between the home and visiting families.

The packs have already been well received by visiting families, with children enjoying both the activities and the opportunity to do something alongside their loved ones. One family member said: “It is a lovely initiative.

Coming into a care home environment can be quite daunting, so it is something to involve them. It can also be something that they do with their loved one.”

Kirsty Swift, Dementia Care Coach at Milford House, said: “Suzanne took real pride in seeing the finished packs ready

for children to enjoy. As someone living with dementia, her involvement is a powerful reminder that every resident has ideas, abilities and a meaningful role to play within the community.

“It was a wonderful example of how a small idea can make a big difference, while also reflecting the spirit of life at Milford House – one that values purpose, contribution and everyone’s individual strengths.”

Most of us look forward to the warmer weather and feeling some sun on our faces. But it’s important to be prepared for hot weather as high temperatures can be dangerous to your health.

How can I stay cool when I'm out and about?

• Avoid spending too much time outside or exercising during the hottest part of the day (between 11am and 3pm), and keep in the shade.

• Wear a sun hat and carry a bottle of water with you.

• Wear light-coloured, lightweight cotton clothing can help keep you cooler.

• Keep an eye on the weather forecast • Apply sun cream. You should use at least SPF 30 and apply it regularly.

Make sure you don't miss any spots – it can be easy to forget bald patches, for instance.

• UV levels can still be harmful when it's cloudy out, so be careful even when it's not sunny.

• Talk to your optician about prescription sunglasses. Make sure any sunglasses you wear have a CE mark and UV40 label.

How can I stay cool when I'm at home?

• Keep blinds down and windows closed when it's cooler inside than out.

• Most medication should be kept below 25°C – so it can be best to keep it in the fridge when it's really hot.

• Check your skin for changes every few months. If you notice that a mole has changed colour or shape or has been bleeding, go and talk to your doctor.

• Drink plenty of water to avoid getting dehydrated, but avoid alcohol as it can dehydrate you.

Extreme heat and dry conditions can cause you to overheat and make you dehydrated, which means you've lost more fluid than you're taking in.

• muscle cramps in your arms, legs or stomach • mild confusion • feeling tired • sleep problems.

You don't have to feel thirsty to be dehydrated.

What should I do if I'm dehydrated or overheating?

Rest in a cool, dark place and drink plenty of water. If your symptoms get worse, call NHS 111 for advice.

To avoid dehydration, make sure you're drinking plenty of fluids. Water, diluted squash or fruit juice are all good options. It's also good to eat a balanced diet to help your body replace any salt you lose by sweating.

Heat exhaustion is when you become very tired and feel unwell after spending long periods of time in the heat.

What should I do if I have heat exhaustion?

• find a cool place and loosen any tight clothes • drink plenty of water or fruit juice • sponge yourself with cool water or have a cool shower.

Your symptoms should improve within 30 minutes. If you're

feeling better but still have any concerns, call your doctor or NHS 111 for advice.

While waiting for the ambulance, follow the advice given for heat exhaustion but don't try to give fluids to anyone who's unconscious.

SocialIsolation Loneliness and social isolation can affect us all at some point in our lives.

Being alone and feeling lonely are different things. Most of us are more likely to feel lonely when we don’t have many people around us, but sometimes you can feel lonely when you are surrounded by people. There are lots of reasons that someone might find themselves alone.

These are just a few: • Moving to a new area • Being a single parent or a carer • A relationship ending • Children leaving home • Retiring • Having a physical or mental health problem that stops you doing things you used to do with people.

It can be hard to reach out and meet new people. Especially if the person you know is alone because something difficult has happened to them, such as someone close to them dying. Trying to find the energy and courage to make new friends when they are struggling emotionally can feel like climbing a mountain. This can be sad and frustrating for the people around them.

Groups and events at your local library

Libraries across Nottingham and Nottinghamshire have lots of free and low-cost groups which can help people connect with others and support their mental health. For example: • Places of Welcome: now at 20 libraries across the county, a network of community venues where anyone can go to find a friendly face for a cup of tea and a chat.

• Regular events in libraries: the perfect place to meet new people and relax in a friendly space. Free or low cost to attend and cover events for underfives, children, and adults. Fina a library event at your local Nottingham City Library or Inspire Nottinghamshire County Library.

There are lots of groups and organisations out there who can help. It might be joining an exercise group, starting a short course, doing some voluntary work, or just asking someone that they like at work if they’d like to go for a coffee.

Encourage the person you know to start with places and activities which feel more comfortable, and not to put too much pressure on themselves. If they feel nervous about trying something new, you could offer to go with them the first time.

Anniversaries and special occasions can be difficult for someone who is isolated or feeling lonely, it might be a good time to reach out to them. If you think loneliness is affecting someone’s mental health, let them know that they can talk to you.

You could also support them to visit their doctor, or suggest they seek a social prescribing referral from their GP practice.

Social prescribing connects people to activities, groups and services in their community to meet the practical, social and emotional needs that can affect your health and wellbeing.

Alzheimer’s Society issues hot weather warning for those living with dementia in the East Midlands

As temperatures are set to rise in the East Midlands for the rest of the week, leading dementia charity Alzheimer's Society has warned that people living with dementia are more vulnerable to hot weather.

The warning comes during the charity’s Forget Me Not Appeal, which is urging people to stand with the nearly one million people living with dementia in the UK to make sure no one faces the condition alone or goes without the care and support they need.

Angelo Makri, Senior Knowledge Officer for Wellbeing at Alzheimer's Society, said: “People should absolutely enjoy the warmer weather, but it’s important to remember that high temperatures can pose serious risks for people living with dementia if they are not supported to stay cool and hydrated.

“People with dementia may not always recognise when they need a drink or wear suitable clothing, which can increase the risk of dehydration and heat-related illness. As temperatures rise this week, we’re urging families, friends and carers to check in and make sure loved ones are drinking enough, wearing light clothing and staying out of direct sunlight.”

The charity also shared the following advice on how best to support people living with dementia during hot weather:

Why are people with dementia more vulnerable to the heat?

People living with dementia face several challenges during hot weather: 1. Reduced heat awareness – Dementia symptoms can mean that people don't recognise signs that they're too hot or realise they need to take cooling measures like seeking shade or removing clothing.

2. Hydration issues – People with dementia may not always recognise that they are thirsty, and may forget or be

unable to drink water regularly. This can lead to dehydration, causing headaches, increased confusion, and urinary tract infections (UTIs).

3. Clothing and environment – People living with dementia may not dress appropriately for hot weather, forget how hot it is outside, or forget to use sunscreen or wear a hat.

4. Medication interactions – Some medications and dementia-related illnesses can make dehydration worse.

Always check the medicine leaflet and speak to the GP if you're concerned.

Top tips to keep people with dementia safe in the hot weather

• Dress appropriately – Ensure the person living with dementia is wearing light-coloured, loose-fitting clothes made from natural fibres help prevent overheating. A hat or cap for outside is essential.

• Keep homes cool – Close the curtains and blinds during the day, especially in sunny, south-facing rooms. Open windows in the evening to let warm air out and cooler air in.

• Avoid the midday sun – Make sure they stay out of the sun during the hottest part of the day (11am-3pm). When outdoors, seek shade, wear a hat and apply high-factor sunscreen regularly.

• Find ways to cool off – Try putting a frozen bottle of water or ice pack next to a fan for DIY air-conditioning, or place a washcloth and iced water nearby.

• Combat dehydration – Leave glasses or jugs of water within easy reach, share a drink with the person, leave

reminders to drink, and provide high water content foods such as ice lollies, milk jellies, melon and yogurt. ‘Water sweets’, such as Jelly Drops, can also help the person stay hydrated.

• Ask others to help – If you don't live near the person or are worried about someone, ask a friend or neighbour to check in.

Lewis Hornby, founder of Jelly Drops, said his own experience highlighted how easily dehydration can be missed: “In our family, we didn’t realise there was a problem until it became an emergency.

My grandma hadn’t been drinking enough, but none of us noticed until she became seriously unwell. It showed us how easily dehydration can be missed in dementia, especially in hot weather.”

Just two years ago, schoolgirl Isobella Mapstone could not leave the house.

The 10-year-old is autistic and has ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) and can find the outside world overwhelming, leading her to lash out and have meltdowns.

Yet recently, she had a 160-strong audience gasping in awe when she gave a rousing speech during the annual Graduation and Awards ceremony held by the national Support Dogs charity.

And it was all because of and testament to her autism assistance dog, Kelly, a yellow Lab trained and provided by the Yorkshire-based good cause.

“This is a really special day because we are celebrating my best friend Kelly and her graduation as an amazing assistance dog,” said Isobella, who lives with her mum, Chelsey Barnes and 12-yearold sister Esmee, who is also autistic, in Edwinstowe, near Mansfield.

Thoresby Vale Primary School pupil Isobella was matched with Kelly in February 2024, and following a year of putting into practice all she had learned from Support Dogs, Isobella, Kelly and Chelsey recently graduated.

“We finally adopted Kelly on May 16, 2025,” said Isobella.

“Since then, my life has changed completely.

Kelly makes me brave.

Before Kelly, going to places like Tesco, Sainsbury’s and Smyth’s Toys was really hard. I get really bad anxiety when there are a lot of people and the noise is just too much. It actually hurts my ears sometimes.

“But now with Kelly by my side, I can do all those things. She helps me feel safe and brave. She’s helped me go to the cinema, which is one of my favourite things to do now.

“She’s helped me go swimming – we’ve even been on holidays together, where we swam. That was the absolute best.

Kelly is my best friend. If it wasn’t for her, I don’t know what I would be doing. She makes me a better person and she just gives so much love and support.

“Even sometimes when I’m upset from school, Kelly is there waiting for me. She gives me a big hug and makes me feel really content and happy again. She’s always got my back.”

Isobella thanked Support Dogs staff, including instructors Katie Childs and Rebecca Cochran, for helping to make their partnership possible. Afterwards, Chelsey said of the speech: “She’d never done anything like that before. It was incredible.”

Isobella has no sense of danger and before Kelly bounded into her life, she would run off. When she was aged around four, as her family were getting out of their car, she bolted and a passerby had to grab her as she ran into the road.

In supermarkets, she would run off or throw herself on the floor, or hide items from the shelves. When she was seven, a supermarket trip turned into terror when Isobella went missing, prompting security to man the doors. Eventually, she was found hiding behind a toy display. Isobella is also “obsessed with water”, says Chelsea, who is a tutor for autistic

children, and she would often try to run into rivers and ponds and has jumped into the bath fully clothed.

And restaurant trips proved stressful, as Isobella would forget to close her mouth while eating, or spit food out, prompting nasty comments from other diners.

Chelsey, 46, said: “People don’t get it – looks would turn to disgust. “But now Kelly’s here, Isobella is able to interact with the world, because Kelly has given her the confidence. I think she feels protected and that she has her best friend with her.”

Isobella didn’t speak until she was two and would try to run away from school.

It wasn’t until she was eight that she was diagnosed with autism. Chelsey found Support Dogs on Instagram, following a recommendation by her paediatrician, and applied in 2022.

She said: “I cried when we got Kelly. The change that this wonderful, wonderful girl has brought our family is truly amazing. It’s life-changing.

“She’s our life. I think Support Dogs is fabulous. The way they help people and what they do, and the fact it is a charity providing its services free of charge, is incredible. Every person who works for the charity is truly wonderful – they are passionate, caring and empathetic and they give people a chance in life.”

Bereavement can leave people feeling sad, lost, and sometimes confused, but an appropriate funeral and memorial can bring great comfort and peace. At the Willows Natural Burial Ground, the tranquil surroundings of wildflower meadows, woodland, and ponds can provide great solace for those left behind as they remember the person or people they have lost.

The Willows is a 10-acre family-owned natural burial site near South Croxton, with commanding views of the Charnwood countryside, where people can be buried in hand dug graves in eco-friendly coffins or caskets, made of biodegradable materials such as cardboard, willow, wool or banana leaf to name a few.

Conversely, their ashes can be buried or subsurface scattered, either in bio-degradable urns or simply poured into or onto the ground.

A range of commemorative memorials are available, made of natural materials such as Welsh slate, and wood, while many people choose to remember their loved ones by planting a tree or native rose bush.

Owners Chris and Jenny Scroby and their family, have been transforming the bare fields with extensive tree and bulb planting since opening in 2011, inviting families of the

buried or pre-purchased plots, to join in at planting weekends. They recently purchased another 3,750 native British bluebell, snowdrop and daffodil bulbs, whilst simultaneously raising money for local charities.

The Willows caters for people of all faiths or no faith. The site can accommodate graveside funerals or act solely as a burial site after a service elsewhere.

If families do have a service on site, their fee includes provision of a small pop-up shelter, with limited seating and soft drinks for those attending.

The natural burial option is a cost-effective alternative to a traditional cemetery burial or cremation. Chris and Jenny work with the family’s chosen funeral directors to ensure everything goes smoothly, whilst respecting the parameters set out to protect and promote the site as a natural, wildlife friendly environment.

Chris says: “We’re very pleased with our progress, which we see as our contribution in giving something back to nature and the environment.”
