The World Cup Final will be shown live at Splendour 2026. And if England makes it all the way, it will be shown from the main stage for the ultimate fanzone festival experience. Plans have been put in place to ensure this won’t clash with Snow Patrol’s headline set and all performances will go ahead as scheduled.

The Wombats, Snow Patrol, Primal Scream, Craig David Presents TS5, Editors, The K’s and The Flaming Lips, Hard Life, The Lathums, Estelle, Cast, Neville Staple from The Specials, Kingfishr, The Futureheads, The Pigeon Detectives, The Sugarhill Gang, Say She She, Divorce and alt blk era play across the main two stages at Wollaton Park on Saturday 18 and Sunday 19 July.

Archy & the Astronauts, Ben Ellis, Cherryholt, Dring, Jerub, M60, Marvin’s Revenge, Mên An Tol, Mòran, Pastel, People Laughing, Saffron Gray, The Cheap Thrills, The Rossettis, Villanelle and Vona Vella are playing The Bodega New Music Stage.

The Nottingham venue is perfectly placed to curate the new music stage line up riding high as the reigning national grassroots music venue, winning the Spirit of the

Scene Music Week Award and the Grassroots Champion at the Live Awards.

Returning to play Splendour after opening the festival as the Future Sound of Nottingham winners last year, Archy & the Astronauts said: “Winning the FSN last year and playing Splendour has been a massive stepping stone in our career and a monumental moment we will never forget. We have reached an entirely

new audience because of it, and have been able to put on larger shows like our upcoming headline show at The Bodega in June, which we thought wouldn’t be a possibility this time last year.

“The new connections we made within the music industry have been a game changer, it’s helped us open so many new doors. The FSN has been one of the main reasons we are in this incredible position today and that goes

many other artists like us as well, who have won before. This competition is more than just playing a festival, it is a chance to further your career and meet some incredible people who want to help out new and emerging artists.”

Returning for 2026, the Future Sound of Nottingham gives local artists the opportunity to play the main stages of Rock City and

Splendour Festival. Previous finalists have included alt blk era who have gone on to win a MOBO and Emily Makis, who co-wrote a Chase & Status track and won DJ Mag’s Best Vocalist.

This year’s event will take place at Rock City on Sunday June 14, with finalists revealed on May 11.

The weekend offers several stages of music with a wonderful mix of acts to appeal across multiple generations including the return of Vicky McClure and the Dementia Choir, and the popular Day Fever Stage that made its Splendour debut last year.

Alongside the music, there will be Little Splendours children’s area, fairground rides, an independent market, gourmet food and drink and fringe entertainment all in the beautiful historic parkland.

Weekend, Saturday and Sunday Day tickets are on offer for adult, youth, city residents while all accompanied children under 11 gain free admission.

ONE CUP, THREE COUNTRIES, ENDLESS STORIES

The FIFA World Cup has always been football’s biggest travelling circus, but in 2026 it’s had a major upgrade. For the first time ever, the tournament is staged across three nations — the United States, Canada and Mexico — creating the largest World Cup in history and turning an entire continent into football’s playground.

Think bigger stadiums, bigger crowds and, perhaps most importantly, bigger drama. The headline change is the expansion from 32 teams to 48. That means more nations, more fans and more chances for underdogs

and Toronto to Los Angeles, Dallas and Mexico City. For travelling supporters, it’s the ultimate football road trip. One day you could be eating tacos in Mexico City, the next watching a match beneath the bright lights of New York, before heading north for a game in Canada. No World Cup has ever offered such variety.

On the pitch, the tournament offers a fascinating mix of established powers and ambitious challengers. Traditional giants such as Brazil, Argentina, France, Germany and Spain have arrived expecting to lift the trophy, but the expanded format opens the door for surprise packages. Every World Cup creates new heroes; 2026 will have more opportunities than ever.

The United States, meanwhile, sees the competition as a coming-of-age moment for soccer. The sport’s popularity has surged in recent years, fuelled by growing domestic leagues, packed stadiums and a new generation of fans. A successful tournament could mark a defining chapter in football’s growth across North America.

Then there’s the atmosphere. World Cups are never just about football. They’re about giant public screenings, spontaneous street celebrations, face paint, national anthems and the unforgettable feeling that the entire world is sharing the same conversation. For one month, ordinary players become legends and ordinary matches become memories that last decades.

The 2026 edition also carries a sense of history. Mexico have become the first nation to host matches at three different men’s World Cups, having previously welcomed the tournament in 1970 and 1986. Across the border, Canada hosted Men’s World Cup matches for the first time, while the United States returns to the stage after its successful 1994 tournament.

So whether you're a lifelong football obsessive or someone who only tunes in every four years, the message is simple: clear your calendar.

Because in 2026, the World Cup hasn’t just come to a city, it’s come to a continent — and is looking to be the biggest football party the world has ever seen.

Melanie C Finds Her Freedom on Sweat

Three decades after first bursting onto the scene with the Spice Girls, Melanie C is entering a new era — and it might just be her most exhilarating yet.

Her new album, SWEAT, is a euphoric celebration of dance music, selfexpression and the joy of movement. Inspired by years spent DJing at festivals around the world and regular appearances at Ibiza's legendary Pacha, the record reconnects Melanie with a part of herself that existed long before Sporty Spice.

"So many things have changed," she says. "Every album I've ever made has been a reflection of that moment in my life."

For Melanie, the roots of SWEAT can be traced back to her late teens, when she first discovered rave culture on a holiday in Spain.

"We were like, 'What is this music?' Everybody's so free when they're dancing and we were just completely hooked from the get-go." Returning to London, she immersed herself in the UK's burgeoning rave scene, finding a sense of community and liberation that would stay with her forever.

"It was such an incredible time," she recalls. "People from so many different social backgrounds and communities coming together and socialising together. This kind of felt like our movement. My parents grew up through the 60s and had the Summer of Love — this was almost like our version of that."

Then came the audition that changed everything. "When I turned 20 I auditioned for the band that became the Spice Girls and that, of course, took over my life."

The years that followed brought global superstardom, but also left little room for the club culture she had fallen in love with. While dance music remained an influence throughout her career — from the iconic Hex Hector remix of "I Turn To You" to the electronic flourishes of her solo catalogue — SWEAT marks the first time she has fully embraced that world.

"I've just been able to reclaim who I was before I was a Spice Girl," she says. "This felt like the time to really put all of those

pieces together."

That rediscovery wasn't just musical. It also changed the way she approached making an album. "The perspective of a DJ is very different to the perspective of an artist," she explains. "I really wanted the way I wanted the music to sound, the way I wanted the music to make you feel."

Rather than imagining listeners sitting at home with headphones on, Melanie built SWEAT for dancefloors, festival fields and gym speakers.

"This album, more than anything, I wasn't thinking so much about people sitting at home having a listen — it was about them being on the dancefloor. It was about wanting to motivate and inspire people either on the dancefloor or in the gym."

The result is a record packed with energy, empowerment and unapologetic fun. Tracks such as "Undefeated Champion" channel resilience and self-belief, while the title track perfectly encapsulates the album's playful spirit.

"Sweat felt like the perfect introduction to the album," she says. "It has that energy, it's a little bit tongue in cheek, it's like a fitness banger."

The project also embraces a side of Melanie that fans have known for decades. "I'm so proud to be a Spice Girl and to be Sporty Spice and I completely embrace that," she says. "I don't have to live up to anything. I've tried to not be her and it's impossible. I am very energetic, I am very sporty."

Far from distancing herself from her Spice Girls legacy, SWEAT feels like a natural continuation of it — taking the confidence, positivity and empowerment that defined a generation and reimagining them through the lens of house music and club culture. It's a legacy that continues to resonate with artists and audiences around the world.

"It blows my mind," Melanie says of

being cited as an influence by younger musicians. "All of us Spice Girls, we're so proud. We have left this beautiful legacy behind."

What surprises her most is hearing from artists who weren't even born when the Spice Girls first topped the charts. "I'm like, 'How do you know?' But of course, this is music and a movement that is passed down through generations."

The next chapter of the SWEAT era will unfold on the road this autumn, with a major UK headline tour culminating in a career-defining show at London's O2 Academy Brixton.

For Melanie, the significance of the venue is hard to overstate. "I've been to see some of my favourite artists at Brixton Academy. I actually saw Madonna there way back in the noughties, which was an insane venue to see her."

Despite performing there previously as a guest, she has never headlined the iconic venue herself. "It means so much to me that at this point in my career — it's 30 years since I started with the Spice Girls, over 25 years since I became a solo artist — I'm playing this brilliant iconic venue for the very first time."

Fans can expect a setlist that celebrates every era of her career while introducing them to the world of SWEAT. "I am going to cram in as many hits as I can," she laughs. "I know as a gig-goer I want to hear the hits. I'm not going to leave anybody disappointed."

As for what she hopes audiences take away from the experience?

"It's going to be really energetic, a journey," she says. "When they leave, I want them to be exhausted, but elated, and really sweaty."

After 30 years at the top, SWEAT proves that Melanie C is still evolving, still taking risks and still finding new ways to connect with audiences. Most importantly, it's an album that captures an artist completely at ease with who she is — and having the time of her life.

And if Melanie C had to sum up this new chapter in just three words? "Joyous. Energetic. Fun."

The importance of early estate planning for Alzheimer's patients

As the UK population continues to age, dementia—including Alzheimer’s disease—is becoming increasingly common. Current estimates suggest that close to one million people are living with dementia in the UK, and projections suggest this could rise to around 1.4 million by 2040 (depending on the assumptions used). Alzheimer’s disease is the most common type of dementia.

When a family member or loved one receives an Alzheimer’s diagnosis, the emotional impact can be significant. Alongside this, there are legal and financial considerations that become critically important to address as early as possible. One of the most crucial— and frequently overlooked—steps is estate planning, or reviewing any existing plans already in place.

Why is early estate planning important?

Alzheimer’s is a progressive disease, meaning cognitive function and decision making ability will deteriorate over time. For this reason, it is vital to put affairs in order as early as possible, while the individual still has mental capacity. Early planning helps maintain independence, dignity, and choice, and ensures that financial affairs, healthcare decisions, and end of life wishes are properly considered and documented.

There are several key reasons why early estate planning is so important for individuals diagnosed with Alzheimer’s:

1. Ensuring wishes are clearly documented

As the disease progresses, communication may become increasingly difficult. In England and Wales, a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) allows a person (the ‘donor’) to appoint trusted people (their ‘attorneys’) to help make decisions, or to make decisions on their behalf, if they later lack mental capacity. Separate LPAs can be made for property and financial affairs and

for health and welfare (which can include decisions about life sustaining treatment if the donor chooses to give that authority). A Will sets out how an individual wishes their estate to be dealt with after death. As mental capacity deteriorates, options can become limited, which is why seeking professional advice at an early stage is often sensible. Early action gives individuals greater control over their future and peace of mind that their wishes will be respected.

2. Avoiding family conflict

Caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s can place considerable emotional and financial strain on families. Children may feel pressure to provide support, even though their circumstances may differ significantly. Clear estate planning can help reduce confusion, misunderstandings, and potential disputes by clearly documenting intentions and personal wishes.

3. Protecting assets

As vulnerability increases, so does the risk of financial exploitation or abuse. Robust planning, including Powers of Attorney, trusts, and other legal mechanisms, can help safeguard assets and ensure they are managed appropriately.

4. Easing the burden on caregivers

Putting an estate plan in place early can significantly reduce stress for family members and caregivers by providing clarity and guidance at a difficult time.

Organised by North Notts BID, the popular annual event returns to Worksop town centre on Saturday 4 July, from 10am to 4pm, bringing together celebrity chefs, local food talent, artisan traders and interactive family activities. Celebrity chef Phil Vickery, best known for his acclaimed television career and long-standing role as resident chef on This Morning, will headline this year’s event with two live cookery demonstrations in the main marquee.

Marco Pierre White’s Nottingham steakhouse is giving foodies from across the city an added incentive to eat out on Tuesdays.

A village pub with the bar at the heart of it all. dedicated to creating fresh, creative dishes to a very high standard using the finest seasonal ingredients from the best suppliers.

After years and years of different landlords, reopening and closing The Trent in Radcliffe on Trent was bought by The Secret Pub Company (who at that time owned The Railway, a wonderful place) and reopened as The Radcliffe in 2017. I have been there a lot as it used to be my local and have visited the other venues since the chain has expanded (The Lambley and The Plough). On this occasion I was meeting some friends the day after I fractured my wrist getting my bike wheel caught in a bloody tram track. I was feeling a bit sorry for myself.

My friends, a glass of lovely prosecco and the menu cheered me right up. The pub and dining room are well designed, you feel relaxed and at home as soon as you arrive. The service was spot on, always there when you wanted something and unnoticeable the rest of the time.

A perfect balance. I needed to order something I could eat one handed so we shared the garlic and tomato bread for starter and I had the cod and mussels for main course. Normally I wouldn’t bore you with a run down on garlic bread but it was delicious. The salty garlic butter making the soft bread melt in your mouth and the tomatoes were warm, but not sloppy and soggy. The herbs and fruity cheese finished it off perfectly.

The cod came with buttered leeks, large steamed mussels, hazlenuts and a side of patatas bravas, which was a bit of an odd accompaniment. The fish was cooked perfectly, the cod flaking under the pressure of my fork and the mussels juicy and soft. The dish was a little light on flavour, it could have done with a bit more butter in the leeks, after I’d finished the hazlenuts I found myself wondering if I would be better tipping the

I am a mum with 2 children (one baby, one 9 year old) so I include how the places I visit work for families. I have worked in bars, cafes, restaurants and pubs for most of my life. Good places should be supported, celebrated and shared.

One of my friends ordered the heritage tomato tart and it was a highly praised with it’s rainbow of tomatoes, courgettes and unctious blobs of goats cheese. For pudding I went for the strawberry pavlova, my friend had the sticky toffee pudding but I have enjoyed that so many times I decided something new would make a better review (but for the avoidance of doubt it is one of the best Sticky Toffee Puddings in Nottingham, much like most of the ones I review).

The strawberry pavlova looked underwhelming when it arrived but it was hiding a secret. In the middle of the meringue was a beautiful strawberry sorbet and there was a (slightly unfortunately coloured) strawberry sauce on the bottom. It was a celebration of summer and even tempted my friend that avoids sugar to have a spoonful.

All the venues owned by The Secret Pub Company deliver this high standard and I hope they take over a venue nearer to me soon. The Secret Pub Company is expanding at a reassuring pace, each venue transforms a run down pub/handsome building into a local destination for special occasions

and elevated suppers. The venues integrate well with the communities, hosting local events and are an asset to each village they move to. They remind me Mole Face Pub Company at the height of their success, but I hope they last longer. They are my fail safe if anyone asks for a good country pub (their roast dinner are delicious) I just wish there would have been a bit more flavour to my cod.

Family – All the pubs in the chain offer kids menus, have high chairs and some have seperate baby changing facilities. The Railway and The Radcliffe also have play areas in their gardens for children so make a perfect family pub.

Feeling Liverish? Eat some Watercress!

With festival season nearly upon us, ‘feeling liverish’ may not be the language of your average Gen Z, but it’s a sensation they may be familiar with after a heavy night on the tiles. For anyone who’s overindulged on rich food or alcohol, the liver may be feeling a bit overwhelmed, but as far back as the Anglo Saxons, eating watercress was recommended to ‘spring clean the blood’, while the Victorians advocated watercress for a hangover. So for centuries there has been a link between watercress and excess, but does the science back it up?

Yes! Watercress contains many vitamins A, C, K and glucosinolate compounds, substances that can help the body enhance the activity of liver detoxification enzymes. Studies show that eating vegetables that contain glucosinolates, like watercress, set off an enzyme reaction that turns fat-soluble compounds trapped in the liver into water-soluble compounds that can be expelled from the body via urine. In addition, research published by Harvard Medical School, USA, shows that watercress is also rich in antioxidants that help reduce inflammation, support liver function and enhance overall health."

Other liver-friendly foods include avocadoes, limes, asparagus, broccoli, cabbage, lentils, carrots and mackerel, so, The Watercress Company has developed a range of mouthwatering recipes containing these ingredients which are not only delicious but ideal for boosting liver health just in time for a festival-filled summer:

Grilled Mackerel and Watercress

Salad with Orange and Chilli

Mackerel and peppery watercress make natural plate fellows, but the added zing of orange and heat of chilli make for a truly flavoursome punch.

Ingredients:

• 4 mackerel fillets

• ½ tsp ground coriander

• ½ tsp ground black pepper

• 2 oranges

• 1 red chilli, deseeded and finely chopped

• ½ tsp Dijon mustard

• ½ tbsp. good quality honey

• 85g watercress

• ½ a small red onion, finely sliced

Method:

1.Pre-heat the grill to medium-high.

2.Zest half an orange and mix well

with the coriander, black pepper, and half the chopped chilli.

3.Lightly score the skin of the mackerel fillets with a sharp knife, being careful not to cut into the flesh. Press the spice mixture into the skin.

4.Segment the oranges. Cut off the top and bottom, then cut away any peel and pith using a paring knife. Holding the peeled orange over a bowl, use the paring knife to cut each segment away from the centre. Put the segments to one side and squeeze the remaining orange to release any juice.

5.Measure 2 tbsp of the orange juice into a small bowl, then mix the with mustard, honey and remaining chopped chilli.

6.Place the mackerel fillet skin side up on a grill tray. Grill for 4-5 minutes or until cooked through with crisp skin.

7.While the fish is cooking, divide the watercress between four plates. Scatter with the orange segments and sliced red onion. Drizzle with the orange dressing and top with the grilled mackerel. Serve immediately.

Watercress, Avocado & Lime Smoothie

This smoothie is simple to make, powerful in colour, filling and delicious, whilst brimming with a range of fantastic compounds, vitamins and minerals that will leave you and your liver feeling great! Have this smoothie as part of your daily routine, whether it’s for breakfast or just a snack. You’ll love its versatility!

Ingredients:

• 1 small avocado, peeled and seed removed

• 50g diced pineapple, fresh or frozen

• 33g watercress

• 23g baby spinach

• 1 whole lime, peeled

• Small handful mint leaves

• 250ml chilled coconut water

Method:

1.Add all ingredients into a blender or smoothie maker and blend thoroughly.

2. Add more coconut water to achieve desired consistency, if necessary, then either serve immediately or keep in the fridge for up to three days.

Za’atar Charred Broccoli & Watercress Salad with Pomegranate and Roasted Buckwheat (Vegan)

A powerful combination of liver-friendly watercress, broccoli and lentils, together with onion and bright pomegranate seeds to create an attractive looking salad

Ingredients: Spiced Pomegranate

Dressing:

• 3tbsp Olive Oil

• 1 tbsp Lemon Juice

• 1 tbsp Pomegranate Molasses

• 1/8 tsp Cinnamon, ground

• 1/8 tsp Cardamom, ground

• Salt & Pepper to season Roasted Buckwheat:

• 50g Buckwheat Groats (available online or large supermarkets)

Salad:

• 200g Watercress

• 125g Pomegranate Seeds

• 200g Tenderstem Broccoli

• 1 red Onion, cut into chunks

• 2 tbsp Olive Oil

• 2 tsp Za’atar

• 2 tsp Chilli Flakes

• 1 tsp Malden Salt Flakes

• 1 Lemon, zest

• ½ Bunch Chopped Parsley

• 200g Cooked Brown Lentils (available in a pouch)

Method:

1. Preheat oven 160C. Spread the buckwheat in a single layer on a baking tray and roast for 15-20 minutes or until nutty and golden. Remove and allow to cool. Increase the oven 200C

2. Lay the broccoli on a lined baking tray with the onion. Drizzle with the oil and sprinkle with the za’atar, lemon, chili and salt. Roast for 15-20 minutes or until beginning to char. Set aside.

3. Combine all the dressing ingredients in a jar and shake well to combine.

4. Tumble the broccoli and all the cooking juices into a bowl. Mix in the lentils and parsley.

5. Lay the watercress on a platter and drizzle with a little dressing. Top with the lentil mixture and drizzle with some more of the dressing. Finally, top with the pomegranate and roasted buckwheat. Serve at room temperature with extra dressing on the side.

City Vision With \ Nature at its Heart

Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust has today welcomed the new Nottingham City Vision 2050 which sets out a shared ambition for how the city will grow, change and succeed over the next 25 years.

Speaking following the public launch of the vision last week, Wildlife Trust Chief Executive Paul Wilkinson said: “Seeing nature as a key thread running through the vision is exciting and presents a wealth of opportunities. Whether in terms of the aspiration that Nottingham will be a city ‘defined by thriving green spaces, rivers, canals, natural habitats and green corridors’; or a ‘Green Grid’ of people and nature centred active travel routes – anchored to Green Heart – there is so much to welcome.”

The prospect of a network of new natural greenspaces inspired by and connected to the Green Heart is something the Trust is particularly keen to help shape and deliver and has welcomed the further announcement of a £4million plan to transform the Old Market Square with the inclusion of new greenspace.

Paul continued: “Back in 2020 when we launched our ‘Broad Marsh Re-imagined’ campaign we felt that the city was at a turning point. We believed that embracing a nature-first approach to redevelopment could help put the City on the map after

a challenging few years, enhance the lives of people living and working in Nottingham and help secure investment. Despite the level of public backing that natural greenspace should be part of the future plans for the Broad Marsh there was considerable pushback and scepticism, but seeing how the City Council and partner organisations have embraced the concept that nature has a part to play in how our city evolves – and the confidence that the Green Heart has inspired gives great hope for the future that Nottingham can be a national exemplar of urban nature.”

The charity, which has been championing the value of urban wildlife for over 40 years, is particularly excited by the way the new vision captures how new natural greenspaces are vital to the city’s cultural identity and to people’s health and happiness. With its commitment to the Green Heart

nature first vision for the wider Broad Marsh redevelopment the charity feels that Nottingham City Council has demonstrated both leadership and ambition. It applauds the fact that the new Nottingham City Vision not only acknowledges that people want to see more natural greenspace – it sets out how embracing nature can help make the city a better place to live and work, help mitigate the challenges of climate change such as extreme weather and underpin future economic success.

"Six in 26 - a micro anniversary tour - Nik Kershaw and his Band embark on a limited run of shows to mark his 50 years as a responsible adult.

Also known as "the no particular reason we can think of, tour” and “the why the Hell not, tour”. Expect hits and more. In fact, expect whatever you like!”

Born Nicholas David Kershaw on 1st March 1958 in Bristol, he grew up in Ipswich where he discovered his love for music. His father was an architect and flautist in the town’s orchestra and his mother trained as an opera singer. He describes himself as a late developer, first picking up a guitar when he was 15, as a result of watching a TV documentary on David Bowie.

Other early influences included such diverse artists as T-Rex, Deep Purple, Simon & Garfunkel and Genesis.

Several local bands later and after three years working as a civil servant, he grabbed the opportunity to turn professional, serving his apprenticeship playing guitar in jazz fusion and functions bands.

He signed with MCA Records in 1983 and, in the September of the same year, "I Won't Let The Sun Go Down"

was released for the first time, reaching a respectable No.47 in the UK charts ( achieving a rather more respectable No. 2 when re-released the following summer). This was followed in January 1984 by "Wouldn't It Be good" which languished gracefully at No.4 in the UK charts for five weeks and was to break Kershaw worldwide. The seminal “Human Racing” album was released in March and achieved platinum sales in many territories. He managed to squeeze in two European tours, four more hit singles and another platinum album (“The Riddle”) before the end of the year.

1985 saw three hit singles, tours of Europe, Canada, Australia, the States and Japan and an appearance at "Live Aid". He was to record two more albums with MCA, “Radio Musicola” and “The Works” before leaving the spotlight in 1989 to focus on songwriting and production.

The 90s saw him working with the likes of Cliff Richard, Bonnie Tyler, Lulu, Ronan Keating, Jason Donovan, Nick Carter, Michael W Smith, Connah Reeves, Colin Blunstone, Petula Clark, Gary Barlow, The Hollies, Let Loose

West End musical showstoppers, 80s power ballads and the surging popularity of country music in the UK are behind an exciting new live concert series at one of Nottingham’s most iconic outdoor venues.

Summer Nights will see the return of live music to Nottingham Castle for the first time in more than a decade this summer. Taking place July 2026, the concert series features live orchestras, vocalists and established country music stars. The new series will transform the castle grounds into an open-air concert venue complete with full licensed bar, street food vendors and festival-style entertainment.

The weekend opens with full blown nostalgia on Friday July 10 with the 80s MixTape and Live Orchestra performing many of the decade’s biggest hits, from synth-pop classics to rock anthems and power ballads, including Like a Prayer by Madonna, Livin’ on a Prayer by Bon Jovi, Eye of the Tiger by Survivor, Never Gonna Give You Up by Rick Astley and I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles) by The Proclaimers.

Featuring special guest Johnny Hates Jazz, the night will have everyone reliving the soundtrack of the 80s. Country at the Castle follows on Saturday July 11, bringing the spirit of Nashville to the heart of Nottingham with special guests Elles Bailey, Janet Devlin, Wood Burnt Red and Sticky Bones Jones.

Audiences will be treated to a mix of modern country hits, country rock favourites, and timeless classics reflecting the huge growth in popularity of country music across the UK in recent years.

Musicals Live with Live Orchestra on Sunday July 12 celebrates the biggest songs from musical theatre and film soundtracks performed by live vocalists with a full orchestra doing justice to a showstopping set list. The concert will feature songs from hugely popular productions including Hamilton, Six, Frozen, The Greatest Showman, Dear Evan Hansen, Matilda The Musical and Cats bringing the West End to one of Nottingham’s most iconic outdoor settings.

Event promoter Richard Walpole - from the company behind the award winning Gloworm Festival and Light Post Farm - explained why he wanted to launch the new concert series at Nottingham Castle. Richard said: “Nottingham Castle is such an iconic setting, so bringing live music back here after more than a decade is really exciting. We wanted Summer Nights to offer something for everyone, from 80s nostalgia and the growing country music scene to the magic of musical theatre all in one unforgettable outdoor experience.”

All three events will run from 5pm until 10.30pm and are strictly for over-18s only. Early bird tickets for each event have already sold out, with general admission tickets now priced at £44 including fees. Nottingham residents are eligible for a 10 percent discount.

As part of the Books festival, literary lovers will hear from renowned authors, including art historian and broadcaster Andrew GrahamDixon, as well as former President of the Supreme Court, Lady Hale. Deputy Prime Minister Sir Nick Clegg and Jimmy Wales, the co-founder of Wikipedia, also join the long line-up of literary figures set to speak on their latest published works.

BIF’s new Jazz Director, Wesley Stephenson curates the 2026 BIF jazz programme. Mercurynominated trumpeter and BBC’s New Generation Artist Laura Jurd will join the jazz lineup, as well as headliners Courtney Pine CBE (who will be giving a special performance at the Opera House) and The Darius Brubeck Quartet. The Easy Rollers will also be taking audiences straight back to the music’s roots in 1920s and '30s Harlem, Kansas City and New Orleans at the Pavilion Arts Centre.

FLOWER & GARDEN SHOW AT BELVOIR CASTLE

The 2026 Belvoir Castle Flower and Garden Show is returning this summer, and it's shaping up to be the biggest edition of the event to date.

Set within the historic grounds of Belvoir Castle in Leicestershire, the show is open across two days and offers a full programme for garden enthusiasts, families, and anyone looking for a worthwhile day out.

Garden displays are at the centre of the show, with talented designers creating showcase gardens that offer plenty of inspiration whether you're planning a major overhaul at home or simply love to see what's possible.

The Speakers Marquee runs throughout both Saturday and Sunday, featuring leading celebrity horticultural experts David Domoney, Adam Frost, Paula Routledge & Karen Gimson, delivering demonstrations and

talks that are open to all visitors as part of the day.

Beyond the gardens, the show brings together a wide range of food and drink, independent shopping, and interactive workshops, with activities on offer for all ages. It's a broad programme that gives visitors plenty of reasons to take their time and explore the grounds throughout the day.

Belvoir Castle itself sits above the Vale of Belvoir on the Leicestershire and Lincolnshire border, within easy reach of Nottingham, Grantham, and the surrounding region. The castle grounds provide a striking backdrop for the show, and garden access is included as part of the event ticket.

Stainsby Festival is a wellestablished, intimate and very family friendly event in a beautiful rural setting, held in large marquees on a greenfield site in the picturesque hamlet of Stainsby, Derbyshire. It's been an entirely volunteer run, not-for-profit charity starting in 1969 - a year before Glastonbury. Throughout that time it has spread appreciation of the arts, particularly live music in the singer/songwriter tradition. At various times in its extraordinary and long history it’s also featured book launches, street theatre, poetry readings, light painting and philosophy debates.

Th is year’s festival is from the 17th to the 19th of July with its usual heady mix of folk and

world music, theatre, children’s events, craft stalls, music and art workshops, open mike, meet the musician sessions, and a wide range of craft beers from local breweries (none of them more than 25 miles from the site). A new addition this year is Stainsby’s first ever poetry competition. The judge, Roger McGough. will also be performing his own one man show at the festival.

Seize the Day, Sarah McQuaid and the Rogue Embers are already on this year’s line up which continues to evolve right up to the festival itself. Festival President, Tony Trafford, says As volunteers we can afford to stay flexible with our line up, securing amazing names at the last minute.

2026 ASHOVER SHOW

The 93rd Ashover Show will take place on Wednesday 12 August 2026. Ashover Show is enormously proud of its reputation as one of the finest traditional agricultural shows in the country. The Centre Ring will start with Local Show Jumping from 8.00am to 10.00am after which the President, Mr. John Cook will arrive on the Showground. We have a full timetable of events in the Centre Ring including the Vintage Vehicle parade, Tug of War, Private Driving, parade of hounds, The Heavy Horse Ridden and Dray Classes, The Grand Parade, Fancy Dress and then the BS Showjumping. This year we are delighted to announce that the Centre Ring display will be Ridgeside Falconry and the Little Nipper display of racing terriers who are always extremely popular and entertaining.

The Shire Horses will parade in their ring at the side of the Members’ Enclosure starting at 10.30am. We have livestock rings showing the finest cattle and sheep in the area including a variety of rare breeds and visitors can watch the excitement as the judges make their decisions. All our sections have classes for young people, something vital for the continuation of the Show. The Livestock Grand Parade will take place in the Centre Ring at 3.00pm and visitors will be able to see the champion Shire Horses, Cattle and Sheep parade around the ring with their colourful sashes and rosettes and presented to the President, who will award them with their trophies.

The Light Horse Section will run throughout the day with classes for ridden, in hand, working hunter, games and of course the highlight will be the Fancy Dress Class,

judged by the President, in the Centre Ring. There will be both affiliated BS and unaffiliated show jumping so there really is something for everyone.

The Poultry Section, although unable to display any birds, will have an extremely colourful display of eggs. Next door will be the extremely popular Dog Show with classes for both pedigree and non-pedigree dogs.

The Vintage Tractor ring will showcase around 150 of the best local vehicles. Visitors will be able to relax in the expanded Village Green area whilst listening to the Ashover Brass Band. The children can watch the traditional Punch and Judy Show or pay a visit to the popular Rides and Slides area including the Jumpers Carousel and vintage fairground organ. This year we are delighted to welcome Hobby Horse jumping to the show where you can practice your skills and enter one of the competitions; you are welcome to bring your own hobby horse if you have one or borrow one on the day.

The Horticulture Marquee is an absolute must for visitors with its stunning displays which just get better every year, as does the Appetising Ashover Marquee, which will have over 20 of the absolute best local food producers from around the area. A visit to the Craft Marquee should also not to be missed with over 50

exhibitors displaying the fantastic range of local talent on show.

Out on the showground there will be approximately 200 trade stands, selling everything from farm machinery to bird tables, there really was something to interest everyone! When visitors have looked around everything the Show has to offer, they can simply sit and relax at one of the many and varied food outlets around the ground.

If you would like to become a member, tickets are available through the website. This will give you access to the members’ enclosure where you can sit and relax by the ring side and enjoy a private bar and catering along with members’ only toilets. Car parks surround the show ground and parking is free. Dogs are very welcome on a lead.

With around 300 exhibitors from across the globe you can gain insights into nature, cultures and conservation which they are all keen to share with you. Authors will be giving a series of talks in Turnstone and there are plenty of books for sale. Art lovers can head to Puffin which also houses

the Global Birdfair Mural: watch artists at work as they contribute to this wonderful piece of art.

Younger visitors are welcome to join in the fun in the Discovery Zone. The Hub, run by young conservationists, hosts debates and discussions for all generations to join in plus an Osprey Cruise, available to book on Friday and Saturday evenings.

Selected catering and bar open until after 9pm on Friday and Saturday evenings. Global Birdfair is open from 9:00am each morning from Friday 10 July until Sunday 12 July.

APEING AROUND AT WISTOW MAZE

In celebration of Sir David Attenborough’s 100th year, Leicestershire's famous Wistow Maze has been designed in the shape of a Gorilla.

The giant 8-acre maize maze has a fun Quiz Trail hidden amongst 3 miles of pathways, with highlevel bridges and towers giving stunning panoramic views.

Visitors have to find 12 quiz boards, featuring animals from his pioneering nature series, as well as interesting facts about this famous naturalist and broadcaster.

Visitors can also take part in a variety of mini mazes and games in the Activity Funyard, which includes a space-hopper track, hoopla, beanbag throwing and a football shooting game.

The summer season reaches its delicious finale with the return of the Leamington Food and Drink Festival on Saturday 12 and Sunday 13 September. Now in its 19th year, this free-to-attend event transforms the Pump Room Gardens into a vibrant celebration of food, drink and entertainment, attracting thousands of visitors from across the region and beyond.

Around 120 exhibitors will showcase everything from street food and artisan produce to local specialities, while the Live Cookery Theatre features demonstrations from leading local chefs. Young food lovers can get hands-on at the Kids Make and Bake Cookery School, delivered by award-winning cookery school Get Cooking, and live music from The Bandstand, sponsored by Thomas Flavell & Sons, provides entertainment throughout the weekend.

Radfest returns to Radcliffe-on-Trent on Saturday 27 June, bringing together live music, great food, family entertainment and, most importantly, a stage for young performers who deserve to be seen and heard.

Now in its ninth year, Radfest was set up to give local musicians and performers a chance to perform in front of a real audience, build confidence and gain experience. That feels more important than ever.

Across the UK, grassroots music venues are closing and opportunities for young artists are becoming harder to find. Many talented young people simply don't get the chance to perform, learn their craft or build

a following. Radfest exists to change that. The festival showcases a mix of established local acts alongside emerging performers, many of whom are taking some of their first steps onto a festival stage.

Threads through Creation and Threads through Revelation are two extraordinary large-scale textile exhibitions by acclaimed artist Jacqui Parkinson, bringing the opening and closing stories of the Bible vividly to life through colour, texture and remarkable design and craft.

Together, these exhibitions feature 26 monumental panels (12 Creation, 14 Revelation), each richly layered with silks, paint, metallic leathers and gold leaf. Created over several years, the works combine artistic brilliance with deep storytelling, offering a visually immersive and thoughtprovoking experience.

This summer, The Arc Cinema is making family trips to the movies more affordable than ever with the launch of its biggest seasonal promotion to date: The Great British Summer of Cinema.

Running from 25 June until 1 September at both Hucknall and Beeston, the campaign has been designed to help families enjoy a summer packed with blockbuster entertainment without breaking the bank. At the heart of the promotion is a simple promise: Comfort and Prime seats for just £6.95 when purchased as part of a Family or Child ticket.

For many guests, that's a huge saving. In fact, The Arc Cinema's Prime seats are discounted by more than 35%, meaning The Arc is going significantly further than the Government's temporary summer VAT relief and delivering even greater value directly to customers.

The Government's new Great British Summer Savings initiative sees VAT on eligible children's cinema tickets reduced from 20% to 5% between 25 June and 1 September, helping families enjoy more affordable leisure activities during the school holidays. The scheme also covers qualifying children's meals and family attractions across the UK.

While many businesses may simply pass on the tax saving, The Arc Cinema has chosen to go further. "Our aim was to create a promotion families would genuinely notice," explains Marketing Manager Mark Gallagher. "The Government's initiative gave us an opportunity to help families, but we wanted to amplify that benefit. In

some of our cinemas, families are saving over a third off our best seats, which is considerably more than the VAT reduction alone."

Community Café changing lives in Newark

A community bereavement group at Cleveland Square Community Centre in Newark has become a lifeline for people coping with loss. Founded by resident Maxine Storer, after losing her son, the group began as a small circle of people supporting one another through grief. As word spread, it became a place where anyone experiencing bereavement could talk openly, share memories, laugh, cry, and feel understood.

For some, it has been life changing. One member spoke about her father’s suicide for the first time in her life, finding the relief and support she’d been unable to reach alone. Others, who once felt isolated at home, now look forward to weekly conversations, new friendships, and reassurance.

The group meets every Thursday from 5:30pm to 7pm, offering a warm, confidential and uplifting space. The group also arranges a variety of social gatherings and events to get involved in. Maxine and her sister also created the Community Café at Cleveland Square, run fully by volunteers, welcoming anyone who walks through the door, and using every penny raised to fund private counselling sessions for members of the Bereavement Group.

It has become a valued community hub. Older residents now come every

week for breakfast, company, and conversation, while many enjoy the café’s affordable meals, takeaways, and the pay it forward scheme. The café also hosts a Uniform Club, offering free or donation based school uniforms to families who need a helping hand in the Newark area.

The Café is open every Tuesday and Thursday from 9:30am to 3pm. They are currently looking for volunteers for the Café, especially people confident with basic cooking, and extra help for the fun day itself.

Donations are also warmly welcomed. Anyone wanting to volunteer, contribute, or join the bereavement group or Community Café can simply pop into the Cleveland Square for a chat or to get involved.

This support is offered on an ad hoc basis or at one of our business support surgeries, with the next session on Thursday 10th September in Collingham. Alongside this, we are excited to be partnering with the Federation of Small Businesses to host a Nottinghamshire Business Boot Camp on 8th July, and our annual Economic Growth Conference will return on Thursday 8th October.

New investment is going into regeneration schemes in our towns, such as the creation of retail units and a public services hub in Ollerton to boost local connectivity. More investment is on the horizon with the announcement of the Pride in Place programme

We also work with local businesses to create tailored retail campaigns aimed at boosting local spend, such as our recently launched Newark and Sherwood Gift Card which now has over 100 retailers signed up.

Stephen Libby, winner of this year's The Traitors and the most stylish contestant to come off the series, has designed the 2026 Jeans for Genes charity T-shirt alongside his partner Daniel Quirke.

When we think about protecting our heart, we often focus on diet and exercise. But mental wellbeing plays a powerful role too. Feeling constantly overwhelmed or exhausted doesn’t just affect mood – it can influence blood pressure, inflammation and the daily habits that keep our heart healthy.

Because the heart and brain are so deeply connected, looking after your mind is one of the most important and often overlooked ways to protect your heart. You can think of these habits as small daily “deposits” into your resilience, helping your mind and heart cope better with life’s inevitable challenges.

Barney Hughes, Healthy Heart Coach, explains the relationship between your mind and your heart, and how taking care of one can, in turn, take care of the other.

How Does Mental Health Affect the Heart?

The Nervous System Connection

The heart and brain are in constant communication through the nervous system. In our calm “rest and recover” state, heart rate slows, blood pressure settles and the body restores itself. During periods of ongoing emotional strain (“fight or flight”), heart rate and blood pressure increase, and stress hormones circulate to help us cope. In short bursts, this response is helpful. But, staying in this heightened state over prolonged periods can increased blood pressure and reduce our ability to recover.

Barney explains: “Stress isn’t the enemy – it’s part of being human. The issue arises when we don’t give our body enough opportunities to switch back into recovery mode.” A recent American study showed that individuals with higher endogenous stress hormones, specifically cortisol, norepinephrine, epinephrine faced a 63% higher risk of cardiovascular disease than those with lower levels.

Inflammation and Hormones

Mental wellbeing also affects inflammation, and hormones that regulate appetite, blood sugar and energy. When sleep is disrupted or stress becomes long-term, these systems can become disrupted. Over time, this may influence weight management, metabolic health and cardiovascular risk.

It’s not about one stressful week or a few poor nights of sleep. It’s about patterns that build up gradually over time.

Behavioural Pathways

Beyond the physiological links between our heart and mind, a powerful link lies in our daily behaviours. When we feel overwhelmed, movement, balanced

meals and good sleep often fall down the priority list. These responses are understandable – but if they become long-term patterns, they can increase blood pressure and cholesterol while reducing fitness.

Six Ways to Support Your Mind and Protect Your Heart

The encouraging news is the lifestyle choices that strengthen mental wellbeing also supports heart health. Below are six key areas that can help build resilience and protect your heart.

1. Physical Activity

Regular movement supports mood regulation by releasing feel-good chemicals in the brain and reducing symptoms of anxiety and low mood. Even a short walk can improve energy and mental clarity. From a heart perspective, activity lowers blood pressure, improves cholesterol and supports insulin sensitivity. Over time, consistent movement strengthens both emotional resilience

and cardiovascular health.

Barney explains: “Movement isn’t just about fitness or weight. By moving regularly, we support both our mental resilience and cardiovascular health at the same time.”

Where to start: Aim for 150 minutes of moderate activity per week, such as brisk walking, spin classes or swimming, plus two to three strength sessions. If that feels overwhelming, begin with 10-15 minutes of brisk walking most days.

2. Diet

What we eat influences both how we feel and how our heart functions. Balanced meals built around vegetables, wholegrains, protein and healthy fats help stabilise blood sugar, supporting steadier mood and energy. Large spikes and crashes in blood sugar can leave us feeling tired, irritable or anxious.

A fibre-rich diet also supports gut health, which plays a vital role in the communication between the gut and brain and can influence mood

regulation. From a heart health perspective, this eating pattern is linked with lower LDL (“bad”) cholesterol, reduced inflammation and improved metabolic health.

Where to start:

Aim to fill half your plate with vegetables, include a source of protein at each meal, and choose whole foods where possible.

3. Sleep

A poll done by health insurance provider Aviva, showed that two thirds of the UK population operate on insufficient sleep, and because this feels normal, they don’t realise how much better they could feel with consistent, good-quality sleep.

During sleep, the brain processes memories, restores cognitive function and supports emotional regulation. Being well rested helps us manage stress more effectively and cope with everyday challenges. Blood pressure naturally lowers during restful sleep, allowing the cardiovascular system to recover. Quality sleep also supports hormone balance, inflammation control and healthy blood sugar balancing.

Barney explains: “Sleep is often overlooked when it comes to wellbeing, but it underpins everything. When we’re well rested, we better regulate our emotions and give our heart the recovery time it needs.”

Where to start: Aim for 7-9 hours of sleep per night. Try to go to bed and wake up at similar times each day, reduce screen use before bed and get natural light soon after waking.

4. Managing Mental Load

Aiming to eliminate life’s challenges and stressors is unrealistic. Instead, building the capacity to cope helps us manage difficult periods without feeling overwhelmed or burnt out, while allowing space for recovery.

Small recovery habits can improve coping skills, reduce emotional exhaustion and strengthen resilience over time. Simple practices such as breathwork, short walks, time away from screens or scheduling moments of rest can help the body shift out of “alert mode”, back into a calmer state. For heart health, recovery from stress is essential. Regularly calming the nervous system can help lower circulating stress hormones, support healthier blood pressure levels and improve heart rate variability.

Barney explains: “Stress is part of life, but when it becomes constant it can take a toll on both our mind and our heart. Short recovery periods during the day give the body a chance to reset.”

Where to start: Begin with something simple. 5 minutes of the box breathing exercise, a short walk without your phone, or setting clearer boundaries around work and screen time. Even small, consistent pauses can make a meaningful difference.

5. Social Connection

Humans are wired for social connection, but with social media and online relationships, this connection is becoming scarce. Strong social relationships reduce loneliness, support us through difficult experiences and build resilience. Connection also influences behaviour – the feelings of support and accountability increase the likelihood of maintaining healthy routines.

Research shows loneliness is associated with increased risk of heart disease, whilst strong social support has been linked with lower levels of stress hormones and healthier blood pressure patterns. Feeling connected doesn’t just lift our mood – it can reduce physiological strain on the heart.

Where to start: Aim for one meaningful interaction each day, a shared meal or walk with a friend. Prioritise in-person connection where possible, and don’t be afraid to reach out when you need support.

6. Spend Time in Nature

Time spent in nature has been linked with reduced rumination – the repetitive negative thinking that can fuel anxiety and low mood. Being around trees,

open space and natural light helps calm the mind and restore focus. Even short periods outside can improve mood and reduce feelings of tension.

This time in nature is also associated with lower blood pressure and reduced levels of stress hormones. Being outside frequently also encourages gentle movement – walking, gardening, stretching in fresh air. These small, regular exposures to nature can support emotional balance and heart health.

Where to start: Aim to spend at least 1520 minutes outdoors most days, even if it’s just a short walk, sitting in a park or taking your morning coffee outside. Consistency matters more than duration.

Bringing It All Together

Looking after your mental health and heart health are connected. By prioritising movement, nourishing food, quality sleep, meaningful connection, recovery time and moments in nature, you strengthen both emotional resilience and heart health. When mental wellbeing is supported, the body is better able to regulate stress hormones, support healthy blood pressure, manage inflammation and protect sleep. These foundations make heart-healthy habits easier to sustain over time.

You don’t need to perfect all six areas at once, choose one to focus on this week and build from there. Small consistent deposits into your mental wellbeing can make a powerful difference to your heart health over time.

Small Ideas Can Make a Big Difference

A resident from Derbyshire care home has introduced a new set of children’s activity packs to help make visits more enjoyable and welcoming for younger family members.

Milford House, part of the family-run Milford Care group, has launched the packs after resident Suzanne Palmer, 81, suggested a way to help younger visitors feel more involved during visits. Drawing on her experience as a former teacher, Suzanne came up with activities that would appeal to children of different ages and help them feel more comfortable in the home.

The packs include a range of activities such as wordsearches, colouring pages, dot-to-dots and a special bumble bee hunt around the home, where children are encouraged to spot 10 hidden bees placed in different locations.

Speaking about the inspiration behind the packs, Suzanne said: “I noticed that there were more children visiting family in the home and I wanted a way to engage them. I’m always on the lookout for ways to involve children and families, as I think it is very important.”

“I recalled the activities children enjoyed when I was a teacher and we tried to tailor the activity packs for all ages. It makes me feel good to see the children getting involved in something worthwhile and thrive whilst in the home. I feel that if children have a good experience when they visit, they will be more inclined to visit again.”

The idea came about through conversations between Suzanne and the home’s team, who were keen to support her in bringing it to life. Suzanne now hopes the project will encourage others to share their own ideas and talents.

Nicole Thompson, Home Manager at Milford House, said:“What makes this initiative so special is that it came directly from Suzanne. Our Montessori ethos is about recognising what each resident can do, rather than focusing on what they may need support with, and creating opportunities for them to make choices, share their skills and contribute with purpose.“Suzanne’s activity packs are a lovely example of that in action.

With the right encouragement, her experience as a teacher has helped shape something valuable for children, families and the wider home community. The idea has also inspired further intergenerational activities, including Milo, our new mascot bear, whose name was chosen by residents and staff.”

Children and families can take Milo on their adventures and add photos to his scrapbook when he returns. So far, Milo has been on holiday to Turkey with Geoff’s grandson Jack and his family, to see Oliver! at the theatre with Suzanne and her family and skiing with June’s family. The scrapbook has become a talking point for residents, families and staff, creating another way to strengthen connections between the home and visiting families.

The packs have already been well received by visiting families, with children enjoying both the activities and the opportunity to do something alongside their loved ones. One family member said: “It is a lovely initiative. Coming into a care home environment can be quite daunting, so it is something

to involve them. It can also be something that they do with their loved one.”

As someone living with dementia, her involvement is a powerful reminder that every resident has ideas, abilities and a meaningful role to play within the community.

Memory Walk is an inclusive, family-

friendly event, suitable for people of all ages and abilities. Routes range from 2km to 10km, participation is free and dogs are welcome at all walks.

Together, we are help and hope for around one million people living with dementia in the UK including almost 75,000 people living with the condition across East Midlands. With a suggested fundraising target of £175 per person, every pound raised helps Alzheimer’s Society deliver life changing support and fund groundbreaking research.

County Council, in partnership with Nottingham City Council, has launched a new suicide prevention campaign

The ‘Let’s Break the Silence on Suicide’ campaign aims to make it easier for everyone in Nottingham and Nottinghamshire to ask for help.

One in five adults will have suicidal thoughts at some point in their lives. The Break the Silence on Suicide campaign encourages anyone to take a simple step when they feel overwhelmed and life is challenging. Whether it’s a

daunting and it can be hard to know where to turn for help, but support is available to help you navigate through the tough days. Connecting with others is a vital step in finding the right resources to help you cope, and to ensure that nobody needs to suffer alone."

Bereavement and Loss

What is grief?

Every time life changes, even when that change is good, something else is lost. Loss is a big part of life. Grief is the journey we go through while we are trying to come to terms with having lost something or someone that was important to us.

There are times in life that we are more likely to feel loss, like:

• a relationship ending

• moving to a new area

• changing your job

• when your children leave home, if you are a parent

• retiring

• your health getting worse

• a person or animal you care about dying.

It can be very difficult when someone we care about dies or is seriously ill. Different people experience loss in different ways, so someone else’s grief journey might be very different to our own experiences. There’s no right or wrong way to feel, but it’s natural to have strong emotions. People can feel deeply sad, confused, numb, scared about the future, or out of control. They might even feel like they’ll never be okay again. It’s really tough but these feelings will change over time.

Tips for supporting a friend or family member who is grieving:

• Everyone’s experience of grief is different. Listen to them and try to understand what they are feeling.

• Let them know that you would like to hear some of their memories of the person who died, if/when they feel ready to tell you.

• Offer to help them with practical things, like making them some dinner or offering to look after their children for a few hours.

• Remember that anniversaries like birthdays and special days can be particularly hard emotionally. Reach out and see how they are at these times.

• Don’t worry if they tell you that they talk to the person who has died. This is very common and is usually a healthy part of the grief process.

• If their grief has been affecting their life in a serious way for more than a few months encourage them to seek help.

• Look after yourself. Supporting someone who is grieving can be hard especially if you are grieving too. Make sure that you have support and ask for help if you need it.

Bereavement can leave people feeling sad, lost, and sometimes confused, but an appropriate funeral and memorial can bring great comfort and peace. At the Willows Natural Burial Ground, the tranquil surroundings of wildflower meadows, woodland, and ponds can provide great solace for those left behind as they remember the person or people they have lost.

The Willows is a 10-acre family-owned natural burial site near South Croxton, with commanding views of the Charnwood countryside, where people can be buried in hand dug graves in eco-friendly coffins or caskets, made of biodegradable materials such as cardboard, willow, wool or banana leaf to name a few. Conversely, their ashes can be buried or subsurface scattered, either in bio-degradable urns or simply poured into or onto the ground.

A range of commemorative memorials are available, made of natural materials such as Welsh slate, and wood, while many people choose to remember their loved ones by planting a tree or native rose bush.

Owners Chris and Jenny Scroby and their family, have been transforming the bare fields with extensive tree and bulb planting since opening in 2011, inviting families of the

buried or pre-purchased plots, to join in at planting weekends. They recently purchased another 3,750 native British bluebell, snowdrop and daffodil bulbs, whilst simultaneously raising money for local charities.

The Willows caters for people of all faiths or no faith. The site can accommodate graveside funerals or act solely as a burial site after a service elsewhere. If families do have a service on site, their fee includes provision of a small pop-up shelter, with limited seating and soft drinks for those attending.

The natural burial option is a cost-effective alternative to a traditional cemetery burial or cremation. Chris and Jenny work with the family’s chosen funeral directors to ensure everything goes smoothly, whilst respecting the parameters set out to protect and promote the site as a natural, wildlife friendly environment.

Chris says: “We’re very pleased with our progress, which we see as our contribution in giving something back to nature and the environment.”
