She may have reached the final on the biggest food show on television, but Claire Syrenne has no plans to use her newfound fame to open her own string of restaurants.
“I didn’t go on the show to become a restaurateur and, perhaps weirdly, I have no desire to make people eat my food,” she says. “Instead, I want to help people to cook for themselves and feel confident and happy in the kitchen cooking it.”
The show in question, in case you missed it, is BBC One’s MasterChef, where amateur cooks put their skills to the test hoping to impress the judges and the biggest names in British cooking.
And Claire, a mum of two and a copywriter from Newark, certainly stepped up to the plate, finishing as runnerup, having taken on a host of challenges including cooking for famed chef Heston Blumenthal and working at Alain Ducasse’s Michelin-starred restaurant in London.
Claire is in her element, and much of her passion for getting people into the kitchen to cook for themselves stems from her own life, when cooking gave her a pathway out of the darkness that she struggled with when she experienced severe post-natal depression. She said: “The big motivation for me going on MasterChef was a celebration of surviving horrendous postnatal psychosis and I want to use that experience to show how important cooking can be for everyone. Things had been pretty horrific for me, but cooking was my thread, my guideline through which I could get better and could grow in confidence, and it worked.
“That’s why I want to get people cooking, even if it’s something simple at first, because cooking something, even if it’s something on toast, gives you a confidence boost.
“People shouldn’t worry about what it looks like and don’t worry if you make a mistake. Keep things simple, experiment a bit, fail a bit. It’s OK to fail. You don’t have to win them all.”
Plus, there was the controversy, with long-time judge Gregg Wallace being replaced by Irish chef and new host, Anna Haugh, just before the crucial final week. All in all, it was quite a baptism of fire for 48-year-old Claire and it has changed her life, giving her the platform to do what she loves - cooking and writing and talking about cooking, including launching her own podcast, called Cook and Nourish.
Claire is also set to appear as a special guest at this year’s Nottinghamshire County Show, which takes place at the Newark Showground on May 9, showcasing the best of rural life, including livestock displays, music, entertainment and countryside games. There, she will give a talk and will also judge the Make, Bake and Grow competition for amateur bakers, growers and crafters.
“I’m really looking forward to it,” she says. “My husband’s family are farmers and I’m a firm believer that people should know where the food they buy actually comes from. There’s a huge amount of good food coming out of Nottinghamshire and I’m going to focus on the Bramley apple. The theme is pie, pork and picky bits, looking at how the Trent Valley soil feeds all three – the apples, the pork and Stilton, which I’ll use for the picky bits.”
HELPING NOTTINGHAM'S Rough Sleepers
Beat The Streets saw Nottingham come together once again as more than 58 artists, bands and poets performed across city centre venues to thousands of people, all in the cause of transforming the lives of rough sleepers.
Now it can be revealed that this year’s festival in January has raised more than £50,000 for Framework to help rough sleepers in Nottingham. Every ticket, merch sale, tombola and drink bought has gone towards the completion of brand new high quality homes in Basford for rough sleepers with round the clock support.
It brings the fundraising total to £604,155 since the festival was launched by DHP Family in 2018, which has supported a wide range of initiatives in the city from brand new accommodation and the opening of the winter shelter during covid to mental health support and street outreach.
it has been announced that Beat The Streets 2027 will take place on Sunday 31 January with tickets now on sale.
Framework CEO Claire McGonigle said: “It’s fantastic to see Beat the Streets achieve another successful year. We’re incredibly grateful to DHP, the staff who give their time, and the artists who share their talent to make the festival possible. Framework's partnership with DHP is not only a creative and meaningful way to raise vital funds and amplify our message, but a powerful example of what can be achieved when people come together with kindness and compassion.
“Thank you to everyone who bought a ticket or donated. Beat the Streets is something Nottingham can be proud of, uniting our community each year to tackle homelessness and disadvantage. No one in our city should be without a home, and I am grateful to everyone who shares that belief and supports our work.
“This year's impressive total will go towards Lee House, our supported accommodation in Nottingham for men with a history of rough sleeping. Lee House is a powerful example of how trauma informed, compassionate supported housing can transform lives. I'm delighted that DHP is helping us continue to show the real impact this approach can have.”
Former rough sleeper, Lisa, 48, turned her life around with support from Framework, who found her sleeping on the streets of Nottingham. After the street outreach team gained her trust, Lisa accepted a room in a hostel. Now she has stayed clean for more than two years after a lifetime of addiction following an abusive relationship, and is looking forward to a positive future, thanks to the effective trauma-led support provided by Framework.
Lisa said: "Without Framework, I wouldn't be here now. They just kept coming to see me every day until I was ready to accept their help. The support I've
received is so much more than just a bed. Thanks to Framework’s ongoing support, I'm finally taking the right steps to get my life on track. I'm so grateful for this chance, and proud to share my story as I hope it will encourage others to know they can change their lives for the better too, if they take the help on offer."
A golden ticket to a year of Rock City shows added an extra £1000 to the fundraising total, with more special items to be on offer next year. DHP is also supporting a volunteering initiative - Rock Corps - with a Rock City concert featuring Tinie Tempah and JayaHadaDream as a reward for participants.
DHP MD George Akins said: “We are all really proud here to stage such an important event for our city, raising money for a vital cause that we care deeply about. Passing the £600k milestone in 2026 is brilliant and we’re already looking forward to next year.”
Beat The Streets tickets, giving access to all participating venues throughout the whole day, are available for the recommended donation of £20. www.alttickets.com/beat-thestreets-tickets

Bar Gigi
Seasonal food with fresh ingredients sourced from local & Italian producers –focusing on quality over everything.
Bar Gigi has been on my list of places I have wanted to try since before Christmas. Housed above a clothing boutique on Flying horse walk I had heard good things from respectable diners (well my friend Mhairi, who has impeccable taste).
The entrance is right next to 200 degrees coffee and immediately shouts ‘Nottingham Cool’. Edgy, small and secret, a little rough round the edges and unashamedly full of personality (there’s a bright green fiat 500 in the restaurant).
Once seated we were given the normal tapas patter recommending the number of dishes and guidance on primi, secondi etc which I appreciate. In the same way I believe all restaurants should be clear about their version of rare, medium and well done with steaks I think helping customers navigate menus is generous and clears up any ambiguity.
Don’t get me started on the ‘we bring each dish when it is ready’ BS you get in Wagamamas though. One of a restaurants skills should be staggering cooking start times so all the food arrives at the table together. No one should have to sit there and watch the whole table eat because they unknowingly ordered something that takes longer to cook.
Anyway back to Gigi – the menu was full of promise and we struggled to choose main courses. We settled on the Antipasti Board to share for starter. The Northerner was chuffed to find they sold a wine he loves so ordered a bottle and as it was my birthday I opted for a glass of champagne, both arrived quickly and were perfectly chilled. The antipasti sharing board was impressive, 4 types of cheese, 4 types of meat, bread, olives and roasted vegetables. Although the contents of the board were
I like eating out, trying new restaurants and being on the receiving end of great hospitality. I am a mum with 2 children (one baby, one 9 year old) so I include how the places I visit work for families. I have worked in bars, cafes, restaurants and pubs for most of my life. FOOD CRITIC
chilled the flavours of the meats and the cheese smashed through any subtlety. They were big, brash and we only complained about the fact we could have used more bread to balance them slightly.
We struggled to finish the board and asked them to leave it with us as the main courses arrived. First were the scallops – served in their shell for added theatre. Despite being well cooked the flavours were quite ‘muddy’. I couldn’t taste the bergamot and only got the slightest hint of miso. They were a little gritty as well which was disappointing.
Next arrived the Parmesan pillows, Tomato Carpaccio and Raddichio salad. Added to the order for palate cleansing freshness the salad had bursts of orange that lifted the bitterness of the leaves, the added earthiness from the seeds resulted in a well balanced and enjoyable dish. The tomato carpaccio lacked the seasoning it needed to make the tomatos sing, either that or the out of season, cold February night did them no favours. I am sure served on a sunny day they would be perfect but they fell a little flat.
The highlight of the meal was the Parmesan Pillows – they were delicious, we should have ordered 2 portions (not
being the kind to get bored of ‘too much of a good thing’). The salty cheese and light potato left us both eyeing the last one wondering if politeness dictated we hold back.
The meat/fish dishes then arrived and I realised I should probably have left a few of the other dishes so we could dip into a mouthful of this one, a mouthful of that. 1 day I will learn. I loved the Hake, the nutty crumb and artichoke surrounding it contrasting beautifully with the well cooked fish. The Northerner was not so keen. It was a case of vice versa for the Pork ribs, I found the sauce a bit
too watery and the ribs fiddly to eat. The flavours of ketchup and plum were elusive. The Northerner really enjoyed them and so we claimed our favourites and ate past the point of comfort.
I finished with a ‘Gigimisu’ – their eponymous take on the Italian classic and they must have read my Rudy’s review. The sponge was soaked in enough coffee and alcohol to sink a ship. Just the way I like it. Happy birthday to me (quite literally).
By this point we’d both had a little too much wine and so decided on a game
of ‘Guess the bill’ (a homage to ‘The Trip’) as The Northerner summoned his best Irish accent and asked me to guess the price there was a dawning realisition that this had been a lot more expensive than I realised. Those small plates and sides – they add up. We had a bottle of wine and 2 glasses of champagne as well but the total came to £180ish pounds. I sobered up a little, the food and service were some way short of the cost. I wanted to love Bar Gigi and I doubt my opinion will limit it’s success but I don’t think I would choose to visit again, it isn’t a good sign when the bill is the most memorable part of the meal.
This Easter, a growing number of families are moving away from gifting traditional chocolate eggs in favour of baking kits and creative experiences, as parents and gift-givers look for more meaningful, longerlasting alternatives.
Craft & Crumb, a UK-based, female-founded baking brand, is seeing increased interest in its Easter Bake & Craft Kits, which combine baking, creativity and family time using premium ingredients and eco-friendly, sustainably designed materials.
While chocolate has long been a staple of Easter celebrations, many families are now looking for gifts that create shared moments rather than single-use treats.
Baking kits offer an experience-led alternative, encouraging families to slow down, spend time together and enjoy doing something creative as a group.
According to Craft & Crumb, baking kits are replacing chocolate eggs this Easter for several key reasons:
They create lasting memories – Baking together encourages quality time and connection.
They support screen-free activities – Families are increasingly seeking handson alternatives to screens, especially during school holidays.
They offer better value –With reusable tools and multiple elements, baking kits provide enjoyment beyond Easter weekend.
They build confidence and skills – Children learn practical baking and creative skills while having fun.
Craft & Crumb’s Easter Bake & Craft Kits are designed to be family-friendly and accessible, with pre-measured ingredients, reusable tools and easy-tofollow instructions suitable for all ages and abilities. The kits are ideal for families, gifting, and Easter holiday activities.
Parents tell us they want "gifts that do more than just add to the pile of chocolate,” said Louise Nicholson, Co-Founder of Craft & Crumb. “A baking kit turns Easter into a shared experience — and a fun way to get creative with all that leftover chocolate.”
With prices starting from £4.50, Craft & Crumb’s Easter Bake & Craft Kits offer an affordable alternative to traditional Easter gifting.

How to decorate eggs
1. Decide on whether you want to eat your egg after you have painted it, or use it as decoration. If you want to keep it, you should hollow out the egg first.
2. To hollow out your egg, hold it over a bowl and poke small holes on each sides of the egg. Move the pin inside the egg to gently break the yolk.
3. When the egg has drained, rinse the inside thoroughly, using a mixture of water and vinegar.
4. Let dry for a few hours.
5. Paint your eggs any way you like!
Egg decorating tips
If you are using blown eggs, use a skewer or set the egg on a candle holder to ensure you can rotate it easily when painting.

Easter Treats!
With Easter almost here, we share some lovely recipes from British Lion Eggs that are fun to make with the kids. Starting with an Easter tradition, Simnel cake has been made for hundreds of years.
Simnel Apricot & Pecan Cake
Ingredients:
• 175g (6oz) butter, softened
• 175g (6oz) light soft brown sugar
• 3 large British Lion eggs, beaten
• 225g (8oz) self-raising flour, sieved
• 1 teaspoon baking powder
• 100g (3 1/2 oz) sultanas
• 225g (8oz) no-soak apricots, chopped
• zest and juice of 1 orange
• 100g (3 1/2 oz) pecan nuts, chopped
Method:
1. Preheat the oven to Gas
Mark 3/170C/320F. Grease a 20cm (8 inch) round, deep cake tin and line with baking parchment.
2. Place the butter, sugar, eggs, flour and baking powder in a large bowl. Whisk until smooth and glossy. Fold in the remaining ingredients and spoon into the tin. Bake for 1-1 1/2 hours until risen and firm.
3. Use a sharp knife to split the cake in half through the middle. Roll out two thirds of the marzipan on an icing sugar-dusted surface and cut out two 20cm (8
inch) rounds. Brush both cut surfaces of the cake with jam and sandwich together with one of the marzipan rounds.
4. Brush the top of the cake with jam and arrange the second marzipan round on top, crimp the edges. Roll the remaining marzipan into eleven balls and arrange on top of the cake, attaching with more jam.
5. Spoon the chocolate into a greaseproof paper piping bag and drizzle over the top of the cake.

• 225g (8oz) plain flour
• 1/2 teaspoon mixed ground spice
• 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
• 50g (1 3/4 oz) currants - 12 currants for eyes
• 2 tablespoons milk
Method:
1. Preheat the oven to Gas Mark 6/200C/400F. Grease two baking sheets.
2. Cream the butter and sugar together with an electric whisk. Add the egg and whisk again.
3. Add the flour, spices and currants and mix well.
4. Lightly knead, then roll out to a 5mm (1/4 inch) thickness. Use a bunny or other shaped cutter to press out about 12 biscuits, re-rolling the dough as necessary.

6. Make eyes with the extra currants and sprinkle over the remaining sugar.
7. Bake for 12-15 minutes or until golden.
8. Cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely. Tie ribbons around the necks of the bunnies.
Lemony Hot Cross Pudding
A zesty take on a classic, our lemony hot cross pudding has just the right amount of sweetness, perfectly complimented by the sourness from the lemons.
Ingredients:
• 5 medium British Lion eggs
• Zest and juice of 1 lemon
• 4 tbsp lemon curd
• 4 tbsp caster sugar
• 150ml single cream
• 200ml milk
• 4 hot cross buns
• 2 tsp Demerara sugar
Method:
1. Preheat the oven to 200C / Fan 180C / Gas Mark 6. In a large jug, beat the eggs, lemon zest, lemon curd and sugar together until smooth. Add single cream and milk and mix well.
2. Slice the hot cross buns
vertically. Place all the end pieces over the base of a 1.2 ltr shallow ovenproof dish. Neatly arrange the other slices on top, then drizzle over the lemon juice.
3. Pour the egg mixture over the sliced buns, then use a fork to lightly press the bread so that it soaks up the custard mix. Leave to stand for 5 minutes.
4. Place the dish in a roasting tin, then pour boiling water from a kettle around the dish to come halfway up the outside. Scatter the Demerara sugar on top of the pudding then bake for 25 minutes or until set with a slight wobble and the top is golden.
5. Remove from the roasting tin and serve warm with a little more cream poured over.

Following a year of fundraising and support from local businesses and volunteers, Nottingham charity Footprints Conductive Education Centre, has opened the doors of its new coffee bar ‘Pulp & Prints’ to the public, and has completed works to refurbish the community hall within its Clifton centre, providing a new space for the community.
At the end of last year, the coffee bar, which is run by the charity Pulp Friction, opened solely to families using the services of Footprints and its team. Now the members have settled into their roles, the time has come to welcome the local Clifton community and beyond. Pulp & Prints, located within Footprints Centre on Farnborough Road in Clifton, serves hot and cold drinks, lunch and cakes and is open during the week and soon Saturdays too.
Footprints moved to its new site in June last year and for the last 12 months has been transforming the building into the now fit-for-purpose centre which supports over 100 families a month, transforming the lives of children living with mobility and communication difficulties.
Part of the transformation works was to refurbish and redecorate a community hall-style room within the centre that the charity could rent out. This is now complete and bookings have already started coming as demand for affordable and accessible community space in and around Clifton is high.
One of the key aims of creating the onsite coffee bar and leasable community hall was to provide an ongoing income for the charities - as Footprints works to bring in its own funds alongside its ongoing fundraising efforts. Local businesses FHP and Blueprint Interiors donated generously to enable the fit out and opening of the coffee bar.
Gemma Ryder, Head of Furniture/ Client Relationship Manager at Blueprint Interiors, said: “From the start of the refurbishment, our goal was to create spaces that genuinely support Footprints work and the people who attend the centre. The coffee bar is the next step in the journey — a place that encourages connection, conversation, and a sense of belonging. It’s fantastic to see the vision now becoming part of everyday life at the centre and also providing much needed funds along the way.
Footprints opens its new coffee bar to the public and starts taking bookings for its new community hall
“We’ve already had lots of amazing support from our contractors and suppliers along with local businesses - but there’s still plenty of opportunities to get involved as we help the Footprints centre reach its full potential.”
Josie Park, Head of Fundraising and Income at Footprints, said: “For years the families we work with have told us how there is such a need for spaces where they can have an informal coffee and a chat, and where all the family can feel included. We are beyond grateful to the incredible support that has helped to make this become a reality, to see this come to life and the impact it is already having is amazing and we’re so excited for the opportunities it brings for the children and families we work with and the community around us.’
There is still much work to be done to fulfil Footprints’ needs and ambitions of providing its life changing services to as many families as possible. Internally the charity needs new windows, blinds and computer equipment. Outdoors, Footprints hopes to create sensory zones for use during sessions and this needs landscaping, outdoor storage, and donations to buy the equipment to bring it to life.
Spring is (hopefully) just around the corner and if, like us, you’re looking to refresh up your wardrobe for the brighter months ahead, you’ve come to the right place!

Scamp & Dude, the fashion brand powered by purpose, announces that TV presenter, author and women's health advocate Davina McCall has joined the brand's Super Scarf mission. For every Super Scarf sold, another is donated to a woman starting chemotherapy as a soft touch of comfort.
From beloved host of Big Brother to fitness guru, author and podcast presenter, Davina has been on our screens for over three decades. As one of the UK's most loved TV personalities, and someone who has opened up about her own cancer journey, Davina lends her support to the brand's signature Super Scarf mission, helping to reach the 60,000 women who start chemotherapy treatment each year.
Davina's chosen design is a beautiful black with white lightning bolts, a neon pink porn porn trim, and finished with an embroidered star, representing light that persists even in the deepest, most challenging moments.
Davina joins a collective of brilliant women who have collaborated with founder Jo Tutchener Sharp OBE in support of the mission, including Lauren Laverne, Giovanna
Fletcher, Ellie Simmonds, Jade Parfitt, Sabrina Elba, Rachel Stevens, Jodie Kidd and Sara Davies MBE. Together with the Scamp & Dude community, the #SuperScarfMission has so far wrapped over 82,000 women in a superpowerinfused hug, helping to give a boost of comfort during a difficult time.
Speaking on the mission, Davina says: "Scamp & Dude is instantly recognisable and I knew the brand long before Jo and I spoke. We bonded over both having been through brain surgery and so when Jo asked me to design a scarf for this mission, it was an easy yes. We were already talking about designs when I was diagnosed with breast cancer, and suddenly it felt even more meaningful to be part of something supporting women at the very start of chemotherapy. I was lucky not to need chemo myself, but I understand just how frightening that moment can be. After surviving a brain tumour and surgery, being diagnosed with breast cancer felt like being punched in the face. I was furious, frightened and confused. Knowing that one in two of us will get cancer is terrifying and it's made me want to do more, and to help in any way I can.
This is so much more than a scarf. It can be a warm hug when you're scared, heat when you're cold,
protection from the sun, but most of all, it's a way of saying someone is thinking of you. Buying one of these scarves tells a woman who's about to start chemotherapy that she's not alone, and that really matters."
"I've wanted to work with Davina ever since I started Scamp & Dude. She aligns with our values perfectly, not only is she brilliantly funny and warm, she is also a huge advocate for women's health, and I admire her immensely for sharing her own journey to raise awareness and support others. I can't tell you how happy I am that she has joined the Super Scarf Mission with a really striking lightning bolt design.
So far, at Scamp & Dude, we have donated over 82,000 Super Scarves, which is incredible, and I am so proud of this achievement and grateful to everyone who has purchased one of our charity Super Scarves. However, this has taken us three years, and we want to reach every single one of the 60,000+ women who start chemotherapy each year. So with Davina's help, we aim to reach more of them, as they all deserve to be seen, and they all deserve a superpower-infused comfort blanket to accompany them on their journey.·
Jo Tutchener Sharp OBE, Scamp & Dude founder and CEO.
The Scamp & Dude x Davina McCall Super Scarf, £40.00, will be available from at scampanddude.com and Scamp & Dude stores in Marlow, Battersea Power Station, and Brighton.

Getting your car looking like new
After a car accident, one of the most common steps in restoring a vehicle to its original condition is getting it resprayed with new paintwork.
The need for respraying typically arises when the car suffers visible damage to its paint, such as scratches, dents, or more severe bodywork damage. While repairs to the vehicle’s frame and structure are necessary, the paint job is crucial for both aesthetic and protective reasons.
The process of respraying a car begins with a thorough assessment of the damage. Any dents or scratches that are present will need to be repaired or filled in before the painting process begins. This is followed by sanding down the existing paint to create a smooth surface for the new coat of paint to adhere to. If the car has any rust, it must be addressed as well, as failing to treat rust can lead to further deterioration over time.
Next, the car is cleaned to remove any dirt, grease, or debris. This ensures that the paint applies evenly and does not get contaminated. After that, a primer is usually applied to provide better adhesion for the paint and to prevent
corrosion. Once the primer has dried, the new paint is sprayed on in layers. Multiple coats are often applied to ensure even coverage and to achieve a high-quality, durable finish. Finally,
a clear coat is applied to protect the paintwork and provide a glossy, smooth finish. This process can take several days, depending on the extent of the damage and the quality of the work being done.
Getting a car resprayed not only restores its appearance but also helps protect the vehicle from the elements, keeping it in good condition and maintaining its value.
Should you leave your estate to your spouse?
When preparing a Will, it can feel natural—and even reassuring—to leave everything to your spouse on your death. Many couples choose to make mirror Wills, meaning each leaves their estate outright to the other, with everything ultimately passing to children or grandchildren on the second death. This approach is familiar, easy to understand and often seems the simplest way to ensure the surviving spouse is financially secure. It can also make the practical administration of the estate more straightforward at what is already a difficult time.
However, while this approach is common, it is not always the wisest or most protective option.
Potential drawbacks of leaving your estate outright to your spouse
Leaving all your assets directly to your spouse means relinquishing control over what ultimately happens to those assets. Several important risks should be considered:
Remarriage:
If the surviving spouse later remarries, their new spouse may acquire potential claims over the estate. This could mean assets intended for children or other beneficiaries become vulnerable.
Care fees:
If the survivor later needs residential or nursing care, assets may be significantly reduced by care costs.
Changes to the Will:
A surviving spouse has complete freedom to change their Will. Although their intentions may be good, circumstances, relationships or advice can change over time,
potentially leading to outcomes you would not have wished for.
Loss of capacity:
If a surviving spouse loses mental capacity before making necessary or advisable updates to their Will, opportunities for tax planning or personal adjustments may be lost.
How a trust in your Will can help
Including an appropriately drafted trust within your Will can protect assets while still ensuring your spouse is fully supported.
A trust can: Safeguard assets for children, grandchildren or future generations.
Support a spouse without giving full control of the estate.
Reduce the risk of assets being affected by remarriage or care fees Prevent unintended changes to ultimate beneficiaries.
Offer flexibility to adapt to changing family or financial circumstances Provide Inheritance Tax planning opportunities.
Taking the right advice
There is no one-size-fits-all solution. The trust that best suits you will depend on your circumstances, family structure, financial position and long term objectives. For this reason, expert legal advice is essential to ensure your Will achieves the right balance of protection, flexibility and simplicity.

Victoria Centre is set to host an inspiring celebration of creativity and vibrant student takeover this spring as Nottingham College returns for a third year – this time, bringing together both fashion and art students for a bold creative showcase.

For more than 50 years, Victoria Centre has been at the heart of Nottingham’s community. Championing local talent and celebrating the city’s creativity remains a key part of this story, and the centre is proud to provide a platform for the next generation of artists and designers to showcase their work and gain recognition.
For the first time, students from both the fashion and art courses will collaborate, showcasing their work through eyecatching displays, installations and original pieces that highlight the breadth of emerging talent in the city. Growing Your Business in Newark and Sherwood
Newark and Sherwood is a district full of ambition and creativity. Situated at the crossroads of road and rail networks, and within a 1-hour 15-minute train ride from London, the district is an ideal place to locate and grow your business.
With an agenda focussed on sustainable growth, the District Council (NSDC) is passionate about providing the best service for local businesses and those interested in moving to the area.
Our Economic Growth team offers a package of support to help businesses access training, property and data. We offer a Grant Finder search service to identify funding options, and during 2025 we provided approximately £100,000 of grants to local businesses through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund.
We organise business support sessions across the year on topics including sustainability, marketing and AI. Our team are always open to suggestions from businesses regarding topics they’d like to see, so please do contact us with any ideas you have.
An expert business advisory service is on offer to local businesses through our links to Nottinghamshire County Council. This involves 1-to-1 guidance which provide business owners with the opportunity to discuss how to grow, build resilience and achieve goals. This
support is offered on an ad hoc basis or at one of our business support surgeries, with the next session on Wednesday 20th May at Edwinstowe.
Alongside this, we are excited to be partnering with the Federation of Small Businesses to host a Nottinghamshire Business Boot Camp in July, and our annual Economic Growth Conference will return on Thursday 8th October.
New investment is going into regeneration schemes in our towns, such as the creation of retail units and a public services hub in Ollerton to boost local connectivity. More investment is on the horizon with the announcement of the Pride in Place programme, with the call for projects currently offering funding for capital funding, community organisations and town centre events.
We also work with local businesses to create tailored retail campaigns aimed at boosting local spend, such as our recently launched Newark and Sherwood Gift Card which now has over 100 retailers signed up.
External schemes include the dualling of the A46 to ease journey times, and Middlebeck, a development adding 7,000 homes and employment floorspace south of Newark.
Meanwhile, the Tritax Park logistics site offers opportunities for enterprises to join a growing regional logistics sector.
Relocating Your Business
Newark-on-Trent offers a strong proposition for businesses considering relocation, combining strategic location, connectivity, affordability, and a supportive local economy.
Situated in the East Midlands, Newark lies at the intersection of key transport routes, including the A1, A46, and A17, making it highly accessible for logistics, distribution, and commuting. The town also benefits from direct rail services to London, Nottingham, and Lincoln, which is advantageous for businesses that rely on regional or national connectivity.
One of Newark’s major advantages is its cost-effectiveness compared to larger urban centres. Commercial property and land are generally more affordable than in nearby cities, allowing businesses to reduce overheads while still accessing a skilled workforce. This makes it particularly appealing for small and mediumsized enterprises as well as growing companies seeking expansion without the high costs associated with metropolitan areas.
The local economy in Newark is diverse, with strengths in manufacturing, logistics, retail, and
professional services. The presence of established industrial estates and business parks provides ready-made infrastructure for companies looking to set up quickly. In addition, the town has a supportive business environment, with local authorities and organisations actively encouraging investment and offering guidance, grants, and networking opportunities.
Newark also benefits from proximity to major economic hubs such as Nottingham and Leicester, enabling businesses to tap into wider markets and supply chains while maintaining a base in a more cost-efficient location. The surrounding region has a strong labour pool, including graduates from nearby universities, which helps businesses recruit talent across a range of sectors.
Quality of life is another important factor for businesses relocating staff. Newark offers a historic market town environment with good schools, amenities, and housing options, making it attractive for employees and their families. This can support staff retention and satisfaction, which are critical for long-term business success.
Overall, Newark-on-Trent presents a balanced opportunity for businesses seeking growth, combining affordabilitay, accessibility, and a supportive economic environment in a well-connected regional setting.

is in the air, and there’s no better time to rediscover one of Derbyshire’s most unique days out. The National Tramway Museum has reopened for the season, welcoming visitors back with a fresh new look and an exciting programme of events for 2026.
Previously known as Crich Tramway Village, the attraction has recently undergone a rebrand, returning to the name many people have long used — the National Tramway Museum. With unlimited tram rides included in admission, guests can hop on and off throughout the day while exploring everything the site has to offer. There is plenty to discover beyond the tram tracks too. Spring also means the return of one of the museum’s most popular seasonal events — the Easter Eggstra. From Good Friday on 3rd April to Easter Monday 6th April, families can follow a fun trail around the site while keeping an eye out for the Easter Bunny, with exciting prizes and fun activities for a day of entertainment! Combined with vintage tram rides and the open-air setting, it’s an ideal way to enjoy the long weekend with the family.

Nature takes centre stage as Mr Straw’s House reopens
Following its annual winter conservation clean, Mr Straw’s House in Worksop has now reopened to the public.
While many National Trust places bring to mind grand mansions and sweeping estates, Mr Straw’s House offers something quietly different. Tucked away in a private cul-de-sac, this modest semi-detached home was the Trust’s first small domestic property, acquired in 1990, and remains one of its most intimate and evocative.
Built in the 1920s and virtually unchanged since the Straw family moved in in 1923, the house is a remarkable time capsule. More than 30,000 everyday objects remain in place; from furniture and furnishings to personal possessions, just as their owners left them. Visitors exploring the display rooms will uncover the story of a family who chose not to modernise, preserving a snapshot of ordinary domestic life across the 20th century.
House and Collections Officer Danielle Lander-Brown says: “This year’s theme, ‘Bringing the outside in’, explores how the natural world shaped the Straw family’s lives. Visitors will see how floral and bird motifs influenced Florence’s décor, and discover how the outdoors inspired the family’s hobbies; from collecting cacti to growing their own fruit and vegetables. Nature wasn’t just something they admired, it was woven into their everyday lives.
That connection continues today, even inspiring the recent ‘Mr Straw’s Greenhouse’ wallpaper design created with Little Greene, based on Walter’s cacti collection. It’s wonderful to see how this modest home still sparks
creativity beyond its walls.”
She adds: “Our monthly volunteerled walk around Worksop offers a chance to step beyond the house and into the places where the Straws worked, worshipped and wandered. It’s a wonderful way to connect their personal story with the wider history of the town.”
Mr Straw’s House is open on Thursdays and Fridays from 09.00 with last admission at 15.30. It will also open on Saturdays during September and October. Admission is by pre-booked, timed self-led tours, with visits limited to small groups of four to support the ongoing conservation of the house.
Admission is £9 for adults, £4.50 for children and free for National Trust members and under 5s. Car parking is available in the orchard opposite the house.
Bookings can be made up to 4 weeks in advance by calling 0344 249 1895 or via the Mr Straw’s House website at: nationaltrust.org.uk/mrstrawshouse

The Great Central Railway is inviting families to hop aboard this Easter for a weekend of heritage rail travel and seasonal fun, headlined by a railway-wide Easter Egg Hunt.
The award-winning railway –recently named Best Day Out at the Leicestershire Tourism Awards – will host the Great Central Easter Egg Hunt from Saturday 4 to Monday 6 April, transforming the line’s four heritage stations into a colourful adventure trail for young explorers and their families.
Visitors can begin their journey at any of the stations, collecting a Hunt Sheet from the ticket office before setting off across the railway in search of 12 brightly coloured Easter eggs hidden across the station sites. With a Runabout Ticket, families can hop on and off the heritage steam and diesel trains as they travel between stations, keeping their eyes peeled for the hidden eggs along the way.
Once all 12 have been found, the adventure ends at Leicester North Station, where the Easter Bunny will be waiting to check completed hunt sheets and hand out chocolate treats during special afternoon appearances across all three days.
The event is designed to encourage families to make a full day of their visit, enjoying the journey as much as the challenge itself. From watching historic locomotives arrive and depart to exploring the unique character of each preserved station, the railway offers plenty to discover along the way. Visitors can pause for refreshments at the Butler Henderson Café at Quorn & Woodhouse Station, while the shop at Loughborough Central Station will be open throughout the weekend, offering souvenirs, gifts and treats that make the perfect reward after completing the hunt.
The Easter weekend celebrations begin a day earlier with the railway’s popular Good(s) Friday event on Friday 3 April. The special day recreates the atmosphere of a busy working railway, with an impressive fleet of historic goods trains running alongside the regular passenger services. Visitors will be able to see
classic steam and diesel locomotives hauling vintage wagons along the line, offering a rare glimpse into the commercial side of Britain’s railway heritage and the vital role freight once played.
Malcolm Holmes, General Manager at Great Central Railway, said: “Easter is a wonderful time for families to come together and enjoy a day out on the railway. Our Easter Egg Hunt offers a playful adventure for children, while the heritage trains and historic stations give parents and grandparents plenty to enjoy too. With the added spectacle of our Good(s) Friday freight operations kicking off the weekend, it promises to be a memorable few days for visitors of all ages.”

A MEMORABLE EASTER DAY OUT AT BELVOIR CASTLE
Families looking for a memorable Easter day out will find plenty to enjoy at Belvoir Castle, where a programme of seasonal activities is set to bring the estate to life throughout the school holidays.
Running from 30 March to 19 April, the highlight of the Easter celebrations is a brand-new Easter Egg Trail designed especially for younger visitors. Set within the Adventure Playground and surrounding woodland, the trail features a series of striking Easter eggs, each uniquely illustrated with whimsical scenes of woodland creatures painting, planting and playfully causing mischief. Children are encouraged to follow the trail, solve clues and discover each hidden egg, turning a simple walk into an interactive adventure.
The Adventure Playground itself provides the perfect setting for the trail, offering plenty of space for children to explore, climb and play as they search for the eggs. With daffodils in bloom and spring in full swing, the wider grounds add to the seasonal atmosphere, making it an ideal outdoor activity for families during the holidays. Alongside the trail, the popular Animal Park will be open daily from 30 March to 29 April, giving visitors the chance to meet a range of friendly farmyard animals, including sheep, goats, donkeys and calves. A dedicated
petting area allows children to get up close to smaller animals while learning more about them, adding an educational element to the Easter visit.
While Easter activities take centre stage, visitors can also enhance their day by exploring the wider estate. The castle itself reopens from 16 March, offering a glimpse into its rich history and impressive interiors, while the surrounding gardens and walking routes provide plenty of opportunities to enjoy the spring scenery.
To round off the visit, the nearby retail village offers a relaxed spot for refreshments or browsing, with a selection of artisan shops and local produce available throughout the week.
With a mix of outdoor adventure, interactive activities and animal encounters, Easter at Belvoir Castle offers a well-rounded day out for families. Tickets for the Adventure Playground and Easter Egg Trail start from £6 for children, with additional options available to explore the full estate.
egg-citement Builds at Sundown
New for this year’s Easter celebrations and taking place from 28th March until 12th April, Sundown Adventureland, the nostalgic theme park for under 10s in Retford, is opening a magical grotto where Eggbert the Easter bunny will be hiding, giving out chocolate to each child that visits him.
As well as the themed grotto, children will also take part in green-fingered activities, including cress-growing which guests will be able to take home and watch flourish.
The new grotto will complement the annual Easter Eggtravaganza trail, which encourages explorers to spring into action and find Eggbert’s hidden eggs that are secretly stashed away across the many play areas, rides and attractions at the iconic park. As Easter isn’t complete without a sweet treat, visitors will receive some free sweets from the Pumpkin Patch Cafe after completing the trail.
Shaun Malvern, director at Sundown Adventureland, said: “It’s important to us to bring new experiences to our visitors and it’s been very enjoyable designing and creating our new Easter grotto. It will be located in the heart of the park, beside the Four Seasons Arena and Monkey Mayhem Driving School, and we’re really looking forward to seeing little ones’ reactions to meeting the Easter bunny and getting stuck into activities that they can take home and remind them of their special day at Sundown.”
In the Four Seasons Arena, guests can meet and take pictures with Sundown’s iconic bear mascots Honey and Sunny throughout the day, where they’ll also lead some dancing sessions for those keen to show off their moves. The large indoor arena also has ample seating and picnic benches, whilst the inside play
areas Crash Landings, Rodeo Corral and the Pumpkin Patch Cafe serve a selection of hot meals, tea, coffee, soft drinks and sweet treats.
Families can continue the egg-citement across the park, where they’ll find over 30 rides, play areas and attractions to enjoy. Avoid getting splashed by dastardly pirates on the Jolly Pirate Barrel Ride, spot everyone’s favourite farmyard animals on the Tractor Ride, or travel through the wild west on Rocky Mountain Railroad.
Traditional, imaginative and explorative play is encouraged through Sundown Adventureland’s Toy Town, Storybook Village and Market Square, and children can let off steam, charge around and enjoy the spring sunshine in outdoor adventure play areas including Angry Birds Activity Park and Fort Apache.
“Sundown in spring, and especially at Easter, is a wonderful time of year where families are embracing the outdoors, shaking off the winter cobwebs and taking some time to be together and make cherished memories. With most schools providing a two-week holiday, we see many families make the most of this with short breaks and week-long trips to Wild Acre Village, Sundown’s overnight accommodation, which was awarded ‘Best in Britain –Holiday Park’ at the recent Hoseasons’ Diamond Awards,” added Debs Griffin, director at Sundown Adventureland.
Perfect for extending the fun, Wild Acre Village is a short walk from the main park and is open for bookings throughout the Easter break, welcoming families of all shapes and sizes.

extra cost, Wild Acre Village is made up of 55 lodges which families can use as their base to explore the park at a leisurely pace, or use it as an opportunity to return to their favourite attractions multiple times.
The village features single and double lodges, which sleep up to five and ten respectively, with king-sized beds for the adults and a triple bunk room for children, a self-catered kitchen with appliances and living area. Selected lodges also have hot tubs, which are ideal for unwinding in after a busy day. The bistro at Crash Landings play area is also open for accommodation guests during the evenings, serving family favourites, and again in the mornings before the park opens when it serves hot breakfasts, tea and coffee.

Let Nature Put a Spring in Your Step
After a decidedly dull damp winter, the arrival of spring means that we can rely on the marvels of Mother Nature to brighten our days whatever the weather. From early blooms like daffodils to tree blossoms, birds busy building nests, bees, butterflies and bats emerging as temperatures rise - there really is something for everyone.
March is the time to spot hares’ frenetic mating behaviour, known as boxing, where they rise on their back legs and lash out at each other with their front paws. Another springtime sight to savour is blackthorn blossom. Whereas most trees develop leaves before they flower, blackthorn, a traditional hedgerow species, blossoms before its leaves appear. This quirky feature gave rise to the phrase ‘blackthorn winter’ – a reference to hedgerows burgeoning with white blossoms looking rather like they’ve had a late dusting of snow. As well as providing a seasonal splash of flowers for us to enjoy, blackthorn is a vital plant for wildlife throughout the year. Its delicate white flowers are an early source of nectar for insects, its thorny branches provide safety for nesting birds and brown hairstreak
butterflies often lay their eggs on the shrub’s fresh shoots in spring. Come autumn, blackthorn fruits, known as sloes, provide food for a range of birds and other wildlife.
One of the first birds to arrive from Africa each spring is the chiffchaff, easily recognised from their onomatopoeic ‘chiffchaff, chiff-chaff’ call. On warmer days, look out for brimstone butterflies emerging from their winter hiding places – a sure sign that spring is underway.
Other early butterflies include the striking and easily recognised red admiral and peacock.
The variety of flowers, insects, birds and other wildlife to take in at this time of year, coupled with the noticeably longer days makes spring the ideal season to get out enjoy the best of what Mother Nature has to offer.

EASTER FUN FOR ALL THE FAMILY
Spring is a wonderful time to explore Nottinghamshire’s National Trust places, and this Easter visitors can enjoy everything from family adventures to fascinating glimpses into the past at Clumber Park, The Workhouse & Infirmary and Mr Straw’s House.
At Clumber Park , longer days, carpets of daffodils and the first real warmth of the year signal the arrival of spring. From 28 March to 12 April, the park will be hosting a packed programme of Easter activities for visitors of all ages.
Families with younger children can follow the Family Trail through the Pleasure Grounds, where playful carnival-themed challenges await. Visitors can try their hand at circus skills, test their aim at duck hoopla and enjoy traditional heritage games before collecting a chocolate egg prize.
Older children, teens, and adults can take part in Crack the Case: An Easter Whodunnit. This interactive mystery trail invites budding detectives to follow clues hidden around the park as they work to solve the case of the missing Hope Diamond. Piece together the evidence correctly and you’ll earn your chocolate reward.
Adding to the festivities, Lakins Vintage Steam Fair will be bringing nostalgic charm to the Front Field with traditional rides, including dodgems and steam yachts, alongside classic fairground games.
Beyond the Easter activities, spring is one of the most beautiful times to visit Clumber. Seasonal bulbs brighten the landscape, making it perfect for a walk, a family bike ride, or a picnic in the sunshine. Visitors can also explore the walled kitchen garden, where the
gardens team are creating a vibrant seasonal display in the glasshouse celebrating the colours of spring.
Over at The Workhouse & Infirmary in Southwell, families can enjoy an Easter Egg Trail with a difference from 28 March to 6 April. The activity trail takes visitors around the historic site with ten playful challenges to complete along the way — from egg and spoon racing to spotting wingspans and rolling chicks. It’s a fun and engaging way for families to explore this memorable property together.
Meanwhile in Worksop, Mr Straw’s House offers a completely different experience. Tucked away in a quiet cul-de-sac, this remarkably preserved 1920s home tells the story of an ordinary grocer’s family who chose not to modernise their Edwardian house. Visitors can step inside to discover rooms filled with thousands of everyday objects and personal possessions, left exactly where the Straw family left them. Admission into Mr Straw’s House is by pre-booked timed self-led tour.

A Coastal Retreat
Buying a holiday home on the coast is an exciting move, but it is a long-term decision that will need some careful consideration. Here are some of the main things you need to decide before you make your move.
You need to decide if a holiday home is right for you. How often are you likely to use it during the holiday season? Are you planning to rent you home out or leave it empty when not being used by you or your family? You will need to be clear about these issues when it comes to home insurance for your new property. What type of holiday home are you looking for, a house or a caravan or static home on one of the managed sites on the coast?
One you have decided the ‘why’ and the ‘what’, you need to think about the location. Do you want to be near vibrant seaside towns and beaches or do you long for peace and quiet in the lovely Lincolnshire countryside? One thing to consider is whether or not you will need access to public
transport or major road networks. Do you want to be close to local amenities, shops and entertainment? These are major considerations as you get older, especially if you want to spend less time driving and more time relaxing. If you decide on a park home there is a variety to choose from and the owners are more than happy to show you around the accommodation on offer and discuss the relevant costs. It is definitely worth visiting a few sites before you make your final choice. It is also worth speaking to other home owners to find out the pros and cons of a particular site. The other choice you will have with a park home is whether or not to buy a new or a used one.
Searches on the internet are a good way to look at what property is on offer too. If
you decide that a house or a bungalow is best for you it is worth checking out local estate agent sites to see what is available in your price range and chosen location.
Finally, one you have a clear vision of what type of holiday home you want, and in which location, you will need to arrange your finances and look at other associated costs.
There is a wide range of experts on hand who can give you advice on finance, insurance and other associated upkeep costs of owning a holiday home. You can find them online, and see reviews of their service, or work with managers on your chosen site or preferred estate agents to find the right people to make sure the process of buying your home runs smoothly.

between characters; most notably the unravelling scientist Griffin, drawing viewers into a sinister world where a dangerous invisibility experiment sparks chaos across the Sussex countryside. Atmospheric, chilling and inventively staged, it offers a thrilling descent into madness.
As the season unfolds, one of literature’s greatest real life mysteries comes into sharp focus with Where is Mrs Christie? on Wednesday 6 May. Liz Grand delivers a compelling portrayal of Agatha Christie during the famous eleven day disappearance that baffled police, press and the public. Found in a Harrogate hotel claiming amnesia, Christie left behind a trail of unanswered questions, was it stress, subterfuge or something far darker? This intimate one woman drama digs into the enigma, unpicking truth from speculation with a deft, captivating touch.
The season’s darker edge reaches its peak on Friday 26 June with Killer Couples, as crime presenter Emma Kenny returns to the Palace
Theatre to dissect the psychology of relationships that turn deadly. From notorious historical pairings to modern day cases, she explores how love, obsession and manipulation intertwine with violence, offering a fascinating and chilling look into the minds of couples who commit the unthinkable. It is a gripping night for true crime enthusiasts, blending forensic insight with compelling storytelling.
Together, these productions weave a season of mystery, psychological depth and dramatic intensity, inviting audiences to step into the dark, the curious and the utterly compelling at the Palace Theatre Newark.
Councillor Rowan Cozens, Deputy Leader of Newark and Sherwood District Council and Portfolio Holder for Heritage, Culture, and the Arts, said: “This season perfectly showcases the Palace Theatre’s ability to bring bold, thought provoking and beautifully crafted storytelling to Newark. Audiences are in for an unforgettable series of nights, full of mystery, imagination and gripping drama.”

EASTER AT LINCOLN CATHEDRAL
Easter is one of the most important times of the year for Christians, and as we journey through Lent there are many acts of worship at the Cathedral which all are welcome to join. Our main services are held over the Easter weekend and include:
Friday 3 April - Good Friday
9.30am - Liturgy for Good Friday
This service has three distinct elements - the story of Jesus' final hours and his death is sung by the choir, there is an opportunity to honour the cross and then to receive Holy Communion.
Good Friday is a solemn day when we remember Jesus' death and God's love for us. The Cathedral is open to visitors (there is no admission charge), but we ask that you are respectful of the sombre nature of this day whilst visiting. There will be a number of spaces set aside to pray and light candles. Everyone is welcome to any of our services in St Hugh's Choir.
12noon - The Seven Last Words
The Dean of Lincoln, the Very Revd Dr Simon Jones, will lead the three?hour devotion on Good Friday, at which meditations on Christ's seven last words from the Cross will be interspersed with movements from JS Bach's 'cello suites, performed by Jane Finch. The service will take place in St Hugh's Choir, and those wishing to attend are welcome to enter and leave as they wish during the course of the three hours.
Saturday 4 April – Holy
Saturday 8pm - Easter Vigil, Baptism & Confirmation and
First Eucharist of Easter
The congregation gathers in the darkness to welcome the Light of Christ symbolised in the Easter Fire and Candle. As we celebrate our Easter faith people are baptised and confirmed by the Bishop.
Sunday 5 April
Easter Day
7.45am - Litany
8.00am -Holy Communion
10.30am - Sung Eucharist with Orchestra
12.30pm- Holy Communion
3.45pm -Festal Evensong with Procession
The Cathedral is also hosting a range of events and activities for all ages over the Ester holidays. From Tuesday 7 to Friday 10 April there will be a family Easter trail sheet to collect and complete, and spring crafts to make. And for the grownups, why not join us on one of the Cathedral’s fantastic tours?
On Saturday 4 April at 1.15pm, join the stained glass tour to find out more about the stunning windows which fill the space with vivid colours and illuminate the building. Or at 1.40pm you can discover The Secrets of Minster Yard on out outdoor tour of Lincoln Cathedral and the surrounding, with exclusive access to little-seen locations that you may otherwise miss. Places are limited so booking is essential – visit www.lincolncathedral.com to find out more and book your place.
at The Arc Cinema Spring Into Spectacle
As the days grow longer and families begin planning for the Easter holidays, there’s no better time to rediscover the magic of the big screen at The Arc Cinema. With luxury electric recliner seats in every auditorium as standard, unbeatable value, and a spectacular lineup of new releases, this spring promises to be one of the most exciting seasons yet for cinema-goers across Nottinghamshire. Whether you’re visiting Beeston or Hucknall locations, every trip to The Arc Cinema is designed to be an experience in itself. From the moment the lights dim and the screen comes alive, guests can sit back, stretch out, and enjoy films in complete comfort — transforming a simple cinema trip into something truly memorable.
Easter Holiday Adventures for the Whole Family
The Easter holidays bring with them one of the most exciting family releases of the year — The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. Following the phenomenal global success of the original Super Mario Bros. Movie, which became one of the highest-grossing animated films of all time and captured the hearts of audiences worldwide, Mario returns for an even bigger cosmic adventure. Bursting with colour, humour, and nostalgia for longtime fans, it’s the perfect Easter treat for families looking to share a magical big-screen moment together. Family outings are made even better with The Arc Cinema’s exceptional value, including Family Tickets for just £7.50 per person, making a premium cinema experience accessible for everyone during the school holidays.
Prestige, Star Power and Awards-Worthy Storytelling
Spring also brings a wealth of highly anticipated new releases for film lovers seeking powerful storytelling and standout performances. Among the most talkedabout titles is The Drama, starring Zendaya
and Robert Pattinson — two of the most compelling actors of their generation. With its gripping narrative and emotional depth, the film is already generating significant buzz and is expected to be one of the defining cinematic moments of the year. April sees the arrival of Michael, the long-awaited biographical film exploring the life, artistry, and global impact of Michael Jackson. Charting his rise from child prodigy to international icon, Michael promises to be an unmissable event — one that demands to be experienced on the biggest screen possible.
Big-Screen Thrills, Iconic Returns and MustSee Moments
Fans of darker, more intense cinema will be eagerly awaiting Lee Cronin’s reimagining of The Mummy. Known for his masterful work in horror, Cronin brings a bold new vision to one of cinema’s most enduring and terrifying legends.
Meanwhile, fashion and film fans alike will celebrate the return of one of the most beloved modern classics with The Devil Wears Prada 2, revisiting the world of high fashion, ambition, and unforgettable characters that defined a generation. These are films designed for the cinema — immersive, cinematic and unforgettable.
Experience HYPERSENSE: Cinema at Its Most Immersive
At selected Arc Cinema locations, guests can enjoy films in HYPERSENSE, our premium large-format experience that enhances every detail on screen.
Beeston General Manager Graeme Tyson explains: “HYPERSENSE represents the very best of what modern cinema can offer. It’s about deeper immersion — bigger visuals, richer sound, and a level of clarity that truly brings films to life. Whether it’s an epic adventure like Mario or a major release like Michael, audiences don’t just watch the film — they feel part of it.”
A Cinema at the Heart of Its Community
The Arc Cinema has quickly become more than just a place to watch films — it’s a place where communities come together. Hucknall General Manager Kelly Golding reflects on what makes the cinema so special during the Easter season: “The Easter holidays are one of our favourite times of the year. Seeing families, friends, and film lovers coming together to share these big moments is what cinema is all about. With our luxury recliners, great value tickets, and such an exciting film line-up, there’s something here for absolutely everyone.”
Luxury, Value and Something for Everyone
Alongside luxury seating in every screen, The Arc Cinema continues to offer exceptional everyday value, including:

Whether you’re escaping into another galaxy with Mario, witnessing the story of a musical legend, or simply enjoying a well-earned break with family and friends, there’s never been a better time to visit.
The Perfect Family Day Out
Grimsthorpe Castle sits amongst the rolling Lincolnshire countryside, enclosed within 3,000 acres of possibly England's oldest parkland. Surrounded by sweeping landscapes and tranquil views, it offers visitors a unique opportunity to explore centuries of history in an unforgettable setting.
The Castle has been home to the Willoughby de Eresby family for over five hundred years, as it was granted by King Henry VIII to William, Baron Willoughby de Eresby, on his marriage to Marina de Salinas, lady-in-waiting to Katherine of Aragon, in 1516. Since then, Grimsthorpe has remained a much-loved family home, carefully preserved and richly furnished.
The Castle holds a remarkable collection of art, preserved inside lavishly decorated state rooms, where tapestries and paintings adorn the walls. It features the largest collection of royal thrones and furnishings outside the Royal Palaces, including the desk at which Queen Victoria signed her coronation oath. Join one of our guided tours to discover the secrets and detailed history of the Castle and family.
The gardens are a wonderful place to unwind. Visitors can explore topiary squares sitting amongst classic herbaceous borders, an unusual ornamental vegetable garden, rose parterres and a mini arboretum. Relax in cleverly positioned vistas, where you can take in the spectacular views across the lake, or simply spend the day playing rounders on the lawns, which are ready-made for summer picnics.
Children can burn off energy in the Woodland Adventure Playground, which includes an adult trim trail, zip line and climbing frames.
Our pop-up trailer, The March Hare, offers delicious refreshments, with indoor and outdoor seating available. If you would like to take something home, visit the Grimsthorpe Farm Shop for a range of fresh, local ingredients, including venison and game from the Grimsthorpe Estate.
Tickets and Season Tickets are available now. Buy a 2026 Season Ticket to enjoy all the best of what Grimsthorpe has to offer.
Open April 30 to September 30, Sunday - Thursday. Visit our website for detailed times and prices.
Tolethorpe 2026 Theatre Season
Adventure, comedy, and highseas drama await at Tolethorpe this summer. Pack your picnic or book a table in our restaurant, gather your family and friends and enjoy unforgettable openair theatre in the heart of the Rutland Countryside, with a bar, ice creams and free parking available.
The season begins with one of Shakespeare’s most joyful comedies, Twelfth Night. When a shipwreck separates twins Viola and Sebastian, mistaken identity, romance and glorious mischief follow. Disguised as a man, Viola finds herself tangled in a hilarious web of love, music and mayhem. Performed in stunning Elizabethan costume and bursting with playful modern touches, this vibrant production promises laughter, spectacle and a magical evening of theatre.
Next, set sail for a swashbuckling adventure with Treasure Island. In this dark and dangerous tale of pirates, murder and deception, young Jim Hawkins must fight to survive on a perilous search for treasure. With the infamous Long John Silver, his larger-than-life parrot Captain Flint and even a full-size pirate ship, expect sword fights, villains and high-seas thrills. Suitable for ages 10+ a deadly tale for anyone brave enough to set sail on the Hispaniola for an adventure of a lifetime.
After surviving the ocean adventures, we fast-forward to Brighton Beach in 1963 just in time for Fish and Chips and the riotous comedy One Man, Two Guvnors. Meet Francis Henshall, a man so hungry for work (and food) that he secretly takes on two employers at once. Unfortunately, one has accidentally killed the brother of the other—and both are searching for each other. Can Francis keep them apart long enough to keep his job and win Dolly’s heart? Will he ever get to eat any dinner? A Rollicking farce, packed with hilarity, havoc and dizygotic twins, join us for an evening of joyful japes and slapstick silliness!
Now firmly back on land, we find ourselves in a farmland where all animals are equal, but some are more equal than others. Tolethorpe Youth Drama (TYD) present the classic tale of rebellion and treachery Animal Farm by George Orwell adapted by Tatty Hennessy. The allure of privilege and the corrupting nature of power is explored in this timely and riveting story beautifully portrayed by the exceptionally talented young people of Tolethorpe.
Adventure, comedy, and highseas drama await at Tolethorpe this summer.
Now with matiness on Sundays even more adventure awaits in the glorious sunshine and the magic of Tolethorpe — book now for a summer you won’t want to miss.

LET YOUR CREATIVITY AND IMAGINATION FLOW
THERE ARE EVENTS YOU ATTEND AND THEN THERE ARE EVENTS YOU EXPERIENCE. MAKERS CENTRAL FIRMLY BELONGS IN THE SECOND CATEGORY.
Bringing together thousands of creators, hobbyists, professionals and the simply curious, Makers Central has become one of the UK’s most exciting celebrations of hands-on creativity. It’s not just a show you walk around; it’s one you step into. The air hums with the sound of machinery, the sparks of live metalwork, the whirr of lathes, and the buzz of conversation between people who love to build, shape and create.
What makes Makers Central stand out is its energy. Across the show floor you’ll find live demonstrations running all weekend — woodworking, leathercraft, robotics, prop-making and more. Makers don’t just display finished pieces; they share process, technique and hard-earned knowledge. You can watch a project take shape in real time, ask questions, and learn directly from experienced creators.
But the real magic lies in the hands-on opportunities. Visitors aren’t confined to the sidelines. Workshops and interactive stands invite you to roll up your sleeves and make something yourself, whether that’s crafting a small leather good, shaping wood, or even driving a robot in a combat arena. It’s about participation, not observation.
The event also bridges traditional craft and modern technology. Alongside timehonoured skills like blacksmithing and hand-tool woodworking, you’ll find cuttingedge CNC machinery, laser engraving, 3D
printing and innovative software solutions. It’s a place where analogue and digital creativity sit comfortably side by side.
Then there’s the community. Makers Central thrives on connection. You’ll meet YouTube creators whose channels you follow, industry experts you’ve admired, and everyday makers who are just as passionate as you are. Conversations spark ideas. Ideas turn into collaborations. Inspiration is everywhere. This year the line up includes Colin Furze and Alec Steele two of the UKs biggest YouTube creators, Bobby Duke from the US and Dave Billings who is bringing his Boeing 737 underground bunker to the show before it goes underground!
For those looking to upgrade their workshop, the show floor is packed with leading tool brands offering live demos and exclusive show deals. It’s a rare chance to test equipment before you buy and speak directly to the people who design and use it. At its heart, Makers Central is about celebrating the simple but powerful act of making. In a world increasingly dominated by screens and mass production, it champions skill, creativity and the satisfaction of building something with your own hands.
Whether you’re a seasoned professional or picking up tools for the first time, Makers Central reminds you of one thing: making isn’t just a hobby — it’s a movement.
194 0 s Melton Mowbray PRESENTS A VINTAGE FESTIVAL
1940s Melton Mowbray is bringing the spirit of 1940s and 1950s Britain alive with a vintage festival here in Melton Mowbray at Play Park, and at the Stockyard on the weekend of May 9th/10th 2026, 10am - 5pm.
There will be a range of exciting events taking place all around the park, stretching into and through the main town centre, onto Nottingham Street and into the Stockyard, where you can step back into the 1950s.
The 1940s event has become a popular, annual attraction in the Melton Mowbray summer events calender. This year we wanted to bring the 40s & 50s together by holding a vintage festival to celebrate both eras with one big event.
With a packed vintage festival of entertainment throughout the weekend, including live music, singing and dancing. Living history re-enactor groups from all around the country, with vintage military and civilian vehicles from the 30s and 40s in the park, and 50s and 60s in the Stockyard. All this combined with a vintagefairground providing nostalgic fun for the whole family.
Walk from the 1930 & 40s in the park, along Nottingham Street and into the Stockyard and step into the 1950s & 60s.
The 1950s in Britain represented a pivotal ere characterised by significant social, economic, and cultural transformation. Emerging from the devastation of WW2, the nation gradually embarked on a path towards recovery, with a significant advancement in living standards.
The rise of youth culture was propelled by the unprecidented popularity of Rock 'n' Roll music and new fashion trends that signified cultural liberation, in essence the 1950s functioned as a crucial bridge between post-war recovery and the onset of modern life.
We want you to experience what life was like in the 1940s & 1950s with our Vintage Festival, and feel the atmosphere made possible through the victory in Europe. It will be packed with live entertainment, 40s & 50s traders, classic cars, iconic
hot rods and full of good old-fashioned family fun and entertainment. So get yourselves dressed up and enjoy the atmosphere from a period that introduced great fashion and music, that can't help but put a smile on your face!

A man of two worlds tour
Acclaimed musician, producer and songwriter Midge Ure embarks on his visionary A Man Of Two Worlds Tour this May and June 2026, with additional November dates added due to demand. Launching alongside his new album A Man Of Two Worlds on 8 May, the tour promises a deeply personal live show, blending classic tracks, fan favourites and cinematic instrumentals into a powerful journey through his remarkable career.
Anticipation has continued to build around what promises to be one of the most distinctive shows of his career. Rather than delivering a straightforward greatest-hits set, Ure has conceived A Man Of Two Worlds as a seamless and immersive concert experience, blending classic tracks and fan favourites with cinematic instrumental pieces to create a continuous musical narrative.
Released on the first night of the tour, the album is Ure’s first collection of new material in 12 years. Divided into two halves, eight instrumental compositions and eight vocal songs, the record mirrors the concept of the live show. While it stands as a powerful statement in its own right, it also provides the creative backbone of the tour, with new material sitting naturally alongside the classics
Midge explains:
“Almost every album I’ve made over the past 40+ years has featured at least one instrumental track. For this album I wanted to explore
that further, showing two sides of what I do. The Man Of Two Worlds Tour reflects this idea, combining instrumentals I’ve written over the years with songs, album tracks and fan favourites side by side, taking the audience on a journey.”
The tour follows a remarkable run of live activity in recent years, including a sold-out 70th birthday celebration at London’s Royal Albert Hall in 2023 and an extensive UK tour in 2024. Continually evolving as a performer, Ure once again challenges expectations with a production that balances reflection with reinvention.
Few artists can claim such creative longevity. From his glam rock days with Slik, through the punk-tinged energy of The Rich Kids (alongside Glen Matlock of the Sex Pistols), to defining the sound of the '80s with Ultravox and Visage, Midge Ure has consistently been at the forefront of innovation. His role in co-writing and producing the global anthem “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” and helping orchestrate Live Aid remains one of the most significant moments in modern music history.
With Ivor Novello, Grammy, and BASCAP awards to his name and a legacy of gold and platinum selling records, Ure now brings fans something completely new.
Midge brings his show to the Royal Concert Hall on 30th May. Tickets available from midgeure.seetickets. com and www. midgeure.co.uk

MATT FORDE
From 28th January to 10th June 2026, Matt is set to tour theatres nationwide –including London’s Bloomsbury Theatre on 14th February and 18th April – with Defying Calamity, a show about finding positivity in life despite all the evidence to the contrary in politics and his own health.
The news follows the first of Matt’s four Edinburgh Fringe Political Party podcast specials, which featured the Secretary of State for Scotland Ian Murray. The episode made headlines for comments taking aim at Edinburgh Council’s “snobby” and “classist” remarks about Oasis fans.
The upcoming Political Party specials are:
On 13th August, Joanna Cherry KC returns to the podcast for a candid conversation about her relationship with her own party, the SNP’s position on women’s rights following the Supreme Court ruling and what her future ambitions are.
On 17th August, Sadiq Khan speaks to Matt following his historic re-election last year for a third term as Mayor of London. For most of his time as Mayor, he had to deal with a Conservative government. Now that Labour are in charge, how has that impacted what he can do? What can Labour nationally learn from his success in London? What’s his assessment of how Labour are doing?
On 21st August, broadcasting icon Kirsty Wark – recently honoured with the prestigious BAFTA Fellowship for her outstanding 40-year career in television –joins Matt for a wide-ranging conversation. Together, they will reflect on her decades presenting Newsnight, the changing political journalism landscape, the challenges posed by misinformation and social media, debates about press freedom, and the key stories and politicians that have defined her career.
Since launching in 2013, Matt’s Political Party podcast has brought Parliament to life through stand-up and lively debate with some of politics’ most powerful figures, including Keir Starmer, Nicola Sturgeon, Tony Blair, Jacob Rees-Mogg, Angela Rayner, Michael Heseltine, Anthony Scaramucci, Alastair Campbell, Gordon Brown and Gary Neville. Following an 18-month hiatus due to his bone cancer diagnosis, Matt has resumed his four-time extended West End residency. The podcast has amassed over 11 million downloads, earned
multiple nominations from award bodies including the British Podcast Awards and Chortle Awards, and is regularly featured as a top podcast pick in the press.
Matt will return to Spitting Image this autumn with a brand-new YouTube series, Spitting Image: The Rest Is Bulls!t.* A one-off teaser episode was released this summer and is available now on the official Spitting Image YouTube channel.
The series is creatively led by Matt and Al Murray, two of the writers behind the critically acclaimed stage show Idiots Assemble: Spitting Image The Musical. The live show was praised by the Evening Standard for being “shockingly funny…I wasn’t expecting this to be so outrageously entertaining”, in a five-star review from the Daily Telegraph the show was applauded for being “a barrel-load of offence-giving fun and a salty dash of rebellion” with The Mail on Sunday celebrating the writer’s “healthy disrespect for the Establishment”.
The BAFTA and Emmy award-winning satirical Spitting Image television series originally ran for 18 series between 1984 and 1996 and was watched by over 15 million viewers. In 2020 it made a return to TV to (since disbanded UK streaming service) BritBox, with Matt writing and voicing characters, including portrayals of Boris Johnson, Keir Starmer, and Donald Trump, achieving critical praise across the political divide. On official social media channels, Spitting Image content was massively popular with over 200 million views globally and three number 1 trending videos on YouTube. Three new one-off specials for ITV (alongside BritBox) also saw huge success on terrestrial television: with a 4.4 million audience in 2020 achieving ITV’s
highest Saturday night ratings at that time in four years.
After enduring what he thought was sciatica during the 2023 Edinburgh Festival Fringe, Matt was diagnosed with cancer. A few weeks later he was having the base of his spine removed. Since learning to walk again, Matt returned to work on his acclaimed Political Party, British Scandal and Down The Dog podcasts, alongside hosting Absolute Radio’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Football Show. His final challenge was returning to the stage with The End of An Era Tour, which was the best-reviewed show at last year’s Fringe out of 1,638 performances per the British Comedy Guide, before embarking on a successful nationwide tour.
Elsewhere in the world of audio, Matt most recently completed his six-part political comedy series on BBC Radio 4, The Matt Forde Focus Group, featuring Matt in conversation with politicians, comedians and subject experts, discussing current issues and the ideas behind them.
Matt hosted four series of Unspun with Matt Forde on Dave, receiving several nominations at the Broadcast Digital Awards, and has numerous other broadcast credits including: Have I Got News For You (BBC One), The Royal Variety Performance (ITV), Mock The Week (BBC Two), 8 out of 10 Cats (Channel 4), Hypothetical (Dave) Rory Bremner’s Coalition Report and Rory Bremner’s Election Report (BBC Two), Question Time (BBC One), This Week (BBC One), Newsnight (BBC Two) and Daily Politics (BBC Two).
Tickets go on exclusive fan pre-sale for those signed up to Matt’s mailing list from 10am on Thursday 14th August, while general sale is at 10am on Friday 15th August. For dates and tickets, visit: mattforde.com

Someone I know needs help with…
Relationships
Our relationships with other people are important for our mental health. Having good relationships with your family and friends can boost your mood and support you when you go through difficult times.
If you don’t have many close relationships, or if an important relationship in your life ends, it can feel lonely. If your relationships are negative, abusive or involve violence this can make you feel unsafe, scared and sad.
Everyone has disagreements or says hurtful things now and then, but if a relationship is healthy, most of the time the other person should make you feel less alone and like you are someone who deserves to be cared about.
How can I change my relationships?
It is never too late to make new friends, to try and mend relationships you already have, or to escape from dangerous or unhealthy relationships.
If you are struggling with loneliness and you are finding it hard to meet people, try our loneliness and social isolation page.
If you are having difficulties in a relationship with someone you love, couples therapy or family therapy can help. Sexual difficulties can also be an important part of your relationship with your partner, talking about this in therapy together can help. Take a look at our Get Help Now section further down on this page for information about getting support.
Sometimes it can be difficult to build relationships with other people and to trust them. There are lots of reasons why relationships might be hard for you and it is ok to ask for help:
You might have autism or a learning disability which means that it can be difficult to understand other people and learn how to talk to them.
In the past, you might have been harmed or hurt by someone you trust and that can make it difficult to trust other people.
You might be struggling with a mood difficulty like anxiety, anger or depression that makes it difficult to open up to other people.
You might feel different or unsure of yourself and find it hard to connect with other people.
What can I do if I think my relationship might be abusive?
If a friend, partner or family member is violent or abusive towards you, it is important to ask for help.
Sometimes it can be hard to recognise when someone is being abusive to you, and even harder to talk about, but try to remember that you’re not alone and there is support available for you. Take a look at the support links in the ‘get help now’ section on our website.
There are different types of abuse in close relationships:
• Physical abuse – being physically hurt, including being restrained.
• Psychological or emotional abuse –being regularly ignored, criticised or humiliated. This also includes coercive control.
• Neglect – not looking after your medical, emotional or physical needs.
• Sexual abuse – any type of sexual activity that you do not agree to willingly.
• Financial abuse – including controlling your money, theft, and fraud.
If you need to talk to someone you trust, visit our website to access the services that can help, and advise how you move forward.
In the pursuit of wellbeing, there’s rarely a one-size-fits-all answer.
We’re bombarded with supplement messaging every day from TV adverts to social media posts with bold health claims on packaging. With each new supplement being supposedly better than the next, it now feels like we don’t have to only worry about getting our essential nutrients, but now we should also start taking lesser-known supplements such as Lion’s Mane or Ashwagandha to unlock a new level of optimum human health.
All this noise can leave us wondering whether we’re missing something vital, nudging us toward buying products we may not actually need. From vitamin D and B vitamins to protein powders, the list is endless, with countless brands insisting their product is the ultimate choice for best health. But it’s not as simple as declaring supplements either essential or pointless, the truth is far more nuanced. As with most things in the pursuit of wellbeing, there’s rarely a one-size-fits-all answer.
Amie Leckie, Registered Nutritional Therapist and Health & Wellbeing Specialist at Heart Research UK, explores the world of supplements -highlighting which ones may be worth considering and which may simply lead to… an expensive wee!
The food first approach
While there may be a place for some well-chosen supplements, no pill or powder can override the harmful impact of a poor diet, nor can it cancel out unhealthy lifestyle habits such as being sedentary or smoking. When it comes to building a foundation for good health, it’s essential to start with the basics: eat a balanced diet, stay hydrated, move your body regularly, prioritise sleep, manage stress, and avoid smoking and excessive alcohol. If you’re still working on these core habits, begin there first.
The takeaway is simple: you don’t need supplements to be healthy, and they are not the answer to the UK’s current health crisis. If you feel overwhelmed by the idea of adding supplements to your routine, or if they’re simply not affordable right now, that’s absolutely fine. You can still be healthy, and happy, without them.
When might a supplement be a good idea
Supplements can be a sensible choice in certain situations, particularly when someone’s diet is very limited or specific health concerns create higher nutritional needs. For example, people following very restricted diets such as vegans, individuals with food intolerances, those with a poor appetite or alcohol dependency – may struggle
to meet their needs for key nutrients like B vitamins, iron, calcium, or omega-3. Similarly, certain health conditions such as Coeliac disease, digestive issues, or medications can affect how well the body absorbs nutrients, making targeted supplementation helpful. However, supplements should never replace professional guidance and if you think you may need one, it’s always best to speak with a registered professional; they can assess your individual needs and ensure any supplement you take is both safe and appropriate for you.
5 common supplements and how they might work for you
Omega-3/fish oil
Omega-3 fatty acids are among the most commonly used supplements in the UK and this type of fat plays an important role in supporting heart health. Oily fish such as salmon, mackerel and sardines are a great source of omega-3, which is why dietary guidelines recommend including these in your diet twice a week to ensure a good intake of this
cardiovascular-friendly nutrient. An omega-3 supplement can be a sensible choice for someone who dislikes fish or doesn’t eat it regularly. However, if you already include oily fish in your weekly diet, you likely don’t need an additional supplement, so save your money.
There are also vegan options available. Algae-based omega-3 supplements provide the same beneficial fats without animal products although the bioavailability of the nutrients is lower, meaning you will likely need higher dosages to get the recommended levels. You can also boost your intake naturally by regularly eating foods such as chia seeds, flaxseeds, walnuts, and hemp seeds.
Vitamin D
Your body makes vitamin D when sunlight hits your skin. It's commonly called the “sunshine vitamin”, but it technically behaves more like a hormone in our body. It’s commonly known for supporting calcium absorption, which keeps your bones, teeth, and muscles strong. Vitamin
D’s reach in the body is wide, it also supports immune health, reduces inflammation, supports brain health and mood and even healthy blood pressure. Some studies have shown that nearly 50% of the adult UK population don’t have adequate levels of vitamin D and this is why the NHS recommend that everyone considers a daily supplement of 10 micrograms (400 IU) of vitamin D during the autumn and winter months, as sunlight exposure is limited.
The body can store vitamin D for periods when sunlight is limited so it’s a good idea to spend lots of time outdoors during the sunnier months. You can also obtain small amounts of vitamin D from foods such as egg yolks, mushrooms and oily fish so be sure to include those in your diet.
If you don’t spend a lot of time outdoors or suspect you might be low, you can ask your GP for a blood test to check your levels and take a supplement at the right dosage for you.
Multivitamins
Many people take multivitamins as a form of “insurance,” hoping to cover any nutritional gaps. However, they are often not necessary, and not all multivitamins are created equal. Many readily available versions are often loaded with sugar, sweeteners, and unnecessary filler ingredients and regularly use synthetic forms of vitamins that some people are unable to successfully use in their bodies (meaning their wee just becomes very expensive!).
Amie Leckie, Health & Wellbeing Specialist, shares:
“For those people who decide to take a multivitamin product, my favourite types are ones made from real food, ingredients such as broccoli powder, acerola cherry powder, or mushroom and asparagus root. Taking supplements in this form minimise the chance that you will overdo any specific nutrient which can cause problems. But I always advocate for healthy eating first!”
Magnesium
Magnesium supplementation is gaining momentum, with many people choosing to try supplementing this mineral for various reasons. Supplements come in various forms, such as magnesium citrate, glycinate and oxide; some are better absorbed than others, and certain types – especially citrate and oxide, can cause digestive upset or loose stools in sensitive individuals.
Whether or not you could benefit from a magnesium supplement depends on your personal circumstances and symptoms, for example, magnesium glycinate can help some people wind
down for bedtime and encourage a restful sleep. However, magnesium is just one of many minerals the body depends on and taking too much of any single mineral can affect the balance of others, this is why it always important to seek advice from a professional.
Protein powders
Protein powders are incredibly popular right now, and they come in many forms; whey from milk, collagen from beef and fish, and plant-based options like pea, soy or hemp. But does everyone need them? Absolutely not. For many people, a balanced diet provides more than enough protein. However, in some cases they can be genuinely helpful. Protein is the most satiating nutrient, meaning it helps you feel fuller for longer, useful if you’re overweight and trying to lose weight. When used correctly, goodquality protein supplements may support weight loss and help stabilise blood sugar, which can reduce cravings and energy crashes.
If you think a protein supplement might be right for you, speak to a professional and choose one without added sugars, artificial sweeteners or unnecessary fillers, ideally with only a few ingredients. The idea isn’t that they would replace meals but be used to boost the protein content of balanced dishes. For example, a bowl of porridge provides around 12g of protein; adding a scoop of protein powder can contribute an extra 20g, helping keep you satisfied for longer.
A word of caution
Some dietary supplements can interact with certain medications, making the medicine less effective and potentially causing serious health problems. Before taking any new supplements it’s always best to check with a registered professional who can check for any contraindications.
Similarly, it’s important to trust the purity and quality of a product, some supplements can be contaminated with environmental pollutants, a common one is fish oil, so making sure to check the company can demonstrate their products are third-party tested is important. If you are ever unsure whether a supplement is right for you or is from a trusted source, consult a registered professional for advice.
To supplement or not to supplement? It’s not as simple as a yes-or-no answer, everyone’s lifestyle, health, and nutritional needs are different. The right supplements can offer meaningful benefits, but that doesn’t mean everyone needs them.
Amie Leckie, Health & Wellbeing Specialist, suggests:
“Start by considering any gaps in your diet and look for ways to fill those with food first. If that’s not possible for you, speak with a registered professional who can help you choose personalised supplements that may be appropriate for your needs.”
Rediscover Sewing
Over the past few years, more adults have been rediscovering sewing, not as a trend, but as a practical and rewarding life skill. For some, it’s about slowing down and creating with their hands. For others, it’s about learning something useful, repairing instead of replacing, or simply gaining confidence in a new craft.
Across Nottingham and the wider East Midlands, including Derby and Leicester, there has been a growing interest in creative skills that are both practical and accessible. Sewing sits right at the centre of this movement.
Many people tell us the same thing: “I’ve always wanted to learn to sew, but I didn’t know where to start.” Others say they learned years ago and lost confidence, especially when it comes to using a sewing machine.
If you’re based in Nottingham or nearby areas such as Derby or Leicester and have been thinking about learning to sew, starting with a beginnerfriendly, community-led workshop may be the perfect first step. You can find details of our upcoming beginner sewing courses on our website
The truth is, sewing doesn’t have to be complicated to be meaningful.
Starting with the Basics
For beginners, the most important thing is not jumping into complex projects, but understanding the sewing machine itself. Knowing how to thread a machine, change needles, control stitching speed, and sew straight lines comfortably can make all the difference.
Once these basics are in place, everyday sewing tasks, such as fixing zips or making simple home items, become far less intimidating. These are the kinds of skills that allow people to sew independently, whether at home or as part of a creative hobby.
Sewing as a Practical Skill
Unlike many crafts, sewing offers immediate, practical results. Being able to make a cushion cover or a tote bag is not only satisfying, but useful. These simple projects help build confidence and reinforce core skills, making sewing feel achievable rather than overwhelming. For many adults, learning in a small, supportive group environment is key. Community-based workshops offer space to learn at a comfortable pace, ask questions, and practise without pressure.
Learning Locally in the East Midlands
Nottingham is home to a growing creative community, and its central location makes it accessible for people travelling from nearby areas such as Derby and Leicester. For those willing to travel a short distance, local workshops can offer a more personal and supportive experience than large commercial classes. At Skilled Hands CIC, we’ve seen first-hand how learning a craft skill can positively impact confidence, wellbeing, and creativity. Sewing, in particular, gives people something tangible to take away, not just a finished item, but a skill they can continue to build on.
A Gentle Way to Get Started
For adults who want to learn sewing in a calm, practical way, a structured beginner course can provide a solid foundation. Focusing on sewing machine confidence, control, and simple projects helps remove fear and replace it with capability.
Education
Choosing the right children’s nursery is an important decision that can significantly influence a child’s early development, confidence, and attitude toward learning.
CHILDREN'S NURSERY CHOOSING THE RIGHT
For many parents, this may be the first time their child spends extended periods away from home, so selecting a nurturing and stimulating environment is essential.
One of the first factors to consider is the quality of care and staff qualifications. A good nursery should have well-trained, experienced staff who understand child development and can respond sensitively to children’s needs. It is helpful to ask about staff-to-child ratios, as smaller groups often allow for more individual attention. Observing how staff interact with children during a visit can give valuable insight into whether the environment feels warm, patient, and engaging.
Safety and cleanliness are also critical. Parents should look for nurseries that maintain high hygiene standards, have secure entry systems, and follow clear safety procedures. Outdoor play areas should be well-maintained and safe, while indoor spaces should be bright, clean, and wellorganized. A safe environment helps children feel secure and allows them to explore confidently.
Another key consideration is the nursery’s learning approach or curriculum. Some nurseries follow structured educational frameworks, while others focus more on play-based learning. Ideally, a nursery should offer a balance of both—encouraging creativity, social interaction, and early literacy and numeracy skills through play. Activities such as storytelling, music, art, and outdoor exploration are all important for a child’s holistic development.
Location and convenience also play a practical role. Choosing a nursery close to home or work can make daily routines easier and reduce stress for both parents and children. Flexible hours may be important for working families, so it is worth checking opening times and policies on late pick-ups or holidays.
Communication between parents and staff is another essential factor. A good nursery should keep parents informed about their child’s progress, daily activities, and any concerns. Regular updates, meetings, or even digital apps can help build trust and ensure consistency between home and nursery environments.
Visiting several nurseries before making a decision is highly recommended. During visits, parents should trust their instincts—if a place feels welcoming and children appear happy and engaged, it is usually a positive sign. Asking questions, speaking to other parents, and reading reviews can also provide helpful perspectives.
Ultimately, the best nursery is one where a child feels safe, valued, and excited to learn. By carefully considering factors such as staff quality, safety, learning approach, and communication, parents can make a confident and informed choice that supports their child’s early growth and wellbeing.
HOW TO CHOOSE A DAY NURSERY
Choosing a nursery for your child is one of the first major decisions parents make, and it can feel both exciting and daunting. For many families, nursery is not just childcare, it is a child’s first experience of learning, friendships and independence.
The right nursery can play a crucial role in helping a child feel secure outside the home. A warm, nurturing environment helps develop confidence and social skills. For parents, there is enormous reassurance in knowing their child is happy, settled and forming positive relationships with other children, as well as staff.
While early years education is the foundation for later learning, the academic rigidity of a nursery is not often top of the checklist when looking for a nursery, but it’s well worth the consideration. Nurseries follow the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), which focuses on communication, language development, early numeracy, creativity and social skills. These early experiences help children become school-ready, building curiosity, resilience and a love of learning long before they step into a reception classroom, so finding the right environment for this is important.
Then comes the financial side of it all. Eligible working parents can now access up to 30 funded childcare hours from the term after their child turns nine months old. However, this recent increase in free hours has also increased demand for places, making it more important than ever to plan
ahead and secure a nursery that suits your family’s needs.
One of those needs will be whether you require a nursery that operates term time only or all year round. Some nurseries, particularly those attached to schools, follow school terms and close during holidays. This can work well for parents who are teachers or who can arrange childcare during the holidays, but it can create challenges for families who can’t.
And then there’s the nitty gritty day to day considerations… are nappies and food included? Are dietary needs supported? How much time do the children spend outside? Are they flexible with drop-off and pick-up times?
Choosing a nursery means considering your family’s emotional and practical needs. Look for a setting where your child feels safe, happy and excited to learn, while also considering logistics such as location, hours and cost. The nursery years should mark the beginning of a positive educational journey and a place where your child’s confidence, curiosity and independence can blossom.
Landmark positive report.
First Nottingham secondary inspected under new Ofsted framework celebrates “landmark” positive report
Parents at The Wells Academy in Mapperley are “overwhelmingly positive” about the school where leaders have a “moral purpose” to improve pupils’ life chances - said an Ofsted report just published following a visit from a team of four inspectors on January 13.
The report represented further evidence of success at The Wells Academy which saw its strongest ever GCSE results in 2025.
The Academy, part of Greenwood Academies Trust, is the first Nottingham secondary inspected under Ofsted’s new framework.
Instead of an overall grade the new framework provides a report card with judgements across key areas, offering parents and carers a more balanced picture of a school’s strengths and priorities.
The report judged The Wells Academy to meeting expected standards across all six areas of the inspection framework: achievement; attendance and behaviour; curriculum and teaching; inclusion; leadership and governance and personal development and wellbeing.
Inspectors found much to praise including the school’s strong and stable leadership, its “orderly environment”, enrichment opportunities and progress of pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds.
“Substantial improvements” achieved in recent years were highlighted, particularly in strengthening teaching,
improving behaviour and attendance and supporting pupils to achieve good results.
Inspectors said: “Over recent years, trustees have ensured that the school's new leadership team has galvanised to make substantial improvements at the school.”
They went on to say: “… school leaders work with moral purpose and determination to ensure the school improves pupils’ life chances, regardless of any challenging circumstances in their lives”.
Highlighting “high staff morale” and retention as a strength, the report provided detail daily life at the school, saying there was an “inclusive culture” where pupils benefited from “high quality pastoral support”.
Inspectors said: “Pupils value the warm and welcoming environment at school. They appreciate how staff greet them every morning at the school gates and throughout the day in corridors and lessons.” Commenting on The Wells Academy’s “well-considered” PSHE (Personal, Social, Health and Economic) programme, the report said: “Staff encourage pupils to aspire to the highest levels of success in their careers.”
Academy and Trust leaders were also commended for having “won the confidence of parents and carers”. Academy principal George Coles said: “We are incredibly proud that Ofsted has recognised the journey we have been on. This is a landmark moment for The Wells Academy and the most
positive inspection outcome in our history.
“This report reflects the hard work of our colleagues, the determination of our pupils and the strength of our partnership with families and the Trust. Most importantly, this report confirms that our pupils are achieving well, feel safe and valued and are being prepared successfully for their next steps.”
“Over the past three years, we have focused relentlessly on building a culture of high expectations, strong relationships and excellent teaching. To see that work recognised so clearly is incredibly rewarding.”
Wayne Norrie, CEO of Greenwood Academies Trust, added: “This is a significant and well-deserved outcome for the entire community at The Wells Academy. The report recognises the moral purpose, determination and strategic clarity that have driven sustained improvement in recent years and I couldn’t be more proud.
“I am also incredibly proud of the leadership and high standards Mr Coles has instilled across the academy and of the way colleagues and pupils have embraced this. This inspection confirms that The Wells Academy is providing a high-quality education for the pupils we serve and I look forward to continuing to support the community as it builds on these strong foundations.”

Medieval Bruges
Walking the streets of Bruges evokes feelings of being in a fairy tale town. The city has one of the most wellpreserved medieval histories of any in Europe and is home to a number of Gothic buildings, now tourist hotspots in the city.
Bruges is a walkable place, but during the winter it does get particularly cold. Wrap up warm and make sure that you are wearing comfortable shoes to tackle the cobbled streets. If you visit midweek, you will find that the canals and byways are particularly peaceful, perfect for a romantic getaway.
Situated at the heart of the city is the old market square, a buzzing hub for tourists thanks to the cafes and restaurants that line the pavements. The Belfry of Bruges, arguably one of the city’s most recognisable symbols, towers over the square and truly does have to be seen to be appreciated. On Wednesdays the square comes to life with its weekly market, with stalls selling a variety of fresh fruits, meats and cheeses, flowers and hot and cold snacks, perfect for nibbling on while you wander.
Famed for its intact medieval history, Bruges is also home to a number of exceptional art galleries, namely Groeningemuseum, where visitors are able to gain an insight into the rich, colourful history of Belgian art, most famously
the Flemish primitives. Take a few hours out of your day to marvel at some of the most important 18th and 19th century neoclassical pieces, not to mention a selection of post-war modern art.
After your eyes have feasted on some of Bruges' most renowned art, it’s time to see to your rumbling stomach. Luckily, the food here is exceptional, and it’s not just beer and chocolate that the Belgians have got right. The menus are particularly decadent, so those hoping to count calories and watch their waistline have certainly come to the wrong place. Meat, seafood, frites and the most lavish of desserts are to be found at the wide range of eateries across the city. For romantic dining, Park Restaurant is unbeatable, where dishes such as scallops and steaks are matched perfectly to wine. Those in search of fresh fish should head to De Stove, located just 50 metres away from the market square. Sample the sea bass, codfish or monkfish, all of which will have come straight from Zeebrugge, a nearby port and seaside resort.
Bruges has a rich ecclesiastical history, so during a weekend break take the opportunity to explore a number of the historical towers.
The Church of Our Lady dates from the 13th, 14th and 15th centuries and is the tallest structure in the whole of the city. After gazing at its nobility, make your way to the Basilica of Holy Blood, a building
most famous for housing a phial that, it has been claimed, contains a cloth with Christ’s blood on. Like many other quaint European cities, Bruges is even more charming when the sun sets. If you’re keen to document your holiday with the perfect picture, make your way to Rozenhoedkaai, an area of the city that is guaranteed to leave a lasting impression on you. It’s perhaps the most photographed site in the whole of the city, and with its bridge, wooden docks and buildings that look like castles, it’s easy to see why.
The nightlife in Bruges is fairly tame, and while you won’t find many clubs here, a number of bars serving a great selection of beers will certainly give those fond of a few tipples something to do. 't Brugs Beertje is open until 1am on Fridays and Saturdays and with over 300 Belgian beers to choose from, it seems like the ideal place to spend your last night in this romantic, endearing city.

Dramatic developments in your personal life will cause you to feel out of balance and destabilised. Exercise patience at work, because soon you will be the recipient of some excellent news. Fate has some great things in store that you were not expecting just yet, including financial gains or rewards. Before you make an official decision, think carefully of what may be involved, and with whom.

Simplicity is everything, so try not to complicate things by behaving foolishly in the eyes of others. Tie up loose ends and get your act together, especially if you are aiming to make a few changes regarding your home or career. A problematic relationship needs careful handling. Someone is going to let you into a little secret regarding a deep, complicated personal matter, entrusting you with their guilty secrets.

A touch of daringness and taking a chance in life could result in a rich reward. A delicate situation either at work or at home, could find you stuck in between a rock and a hard place. You should have learned by now that it’s impossible to please everyone, all the time, so start focusing more intently on your own needs instead. Look into making some wisely placed investments, savings, pensions and the purchase of some property.
You may find yourself in the midst of an unexpected drama. Someone you no longer trust could issue a social invitation, but be careful not to walk where angels fear to tread, because there will always be a condition of some sort involved. Fresh air and exercise is your answer to almost any ailment, but if you are seriously worried about a health issue, seek medical advice immediately.
Someone is out to argue about a matter they know little or nothing about. If you feel as if you are stuck in a rut, then take positive action regardless of the opinions of others, because this is your life, not theirs. When under too much stress, you are more likely to be clumsy and make errors of judgement. Make more time to rest, meditate and spiritually reflect on your current position.

Friends and relationships will feature high on your agenda, and you may even meet new people with whom you share common interests. This is an excellent time to explore different ways of upgrading your earning powers, and perhaps turning a hobby into a lucrative business venture. Property investments should prove successful, but do your homework first before investing any money taking professional advice.
Your health is your wealth so take every opportunity possible to enjoy each day together with other precious moments spent with loved ones. There may be a huge question mark looming over one particular set of circumstances. Perhaps your feelings are not being considered by someone who claims to love you. It's time to make a stand and take control by reclaiming your power back from the undeserving.
By cleverly removing yourself from a difficult situation, realising that you have some incredible talents all of your own, numerous opportunities to double your money will become available, but its also important that you do not put your trust in the wrong people either. Keep all your confidential information under lock and key. You will be on the move in more ways than you can possibly imagine.
Always listen to your intuition, because it is there to protect and guide you. Anyone trying to persuade you to join them in a business venture, must be questioned, because not everything is as it seems. Romance and personal relationships are starting to look increasingly interesting, especially if you are looking to connect with other like minded individuals. If you have been feeling tired or anxious recently, talk things over with a trusted friend.
By remaining in a positive, well balanced mental and emotional state, you will attract individuals towards you who are like minded, genuine and sincere. There could be a hint of romance in the air, with either a new-comer or someone you have been friendly with for some time. A former partner or admirer still hasn’t given up all hope of a reconciliation, which could make life tricky. Choose carefully which direction to go in next.
Regardless of your chosen profession, everything improves when you believe in yourself and know that you are more than capable of reaching the top, by demonstrating sheer persistence, dedication and hard work. A new friendship could develop into something more meaningful as time goes by, depending on your requirements at this stage. Good luck and excellent fortune will be yours to enjoy as a result of your performances.
You need a place of calm, serenity and safety, so make your home your sanctuary. Focus your energies on making it a sumptuous, comfortable, warm and welcoming. Check that your castle is secure and watertight. You are discovering who your true friends are and there could be some painful farewells. Nothing lasts forever, nor remains the same. Always choose to be happy above everything else.

TOP TIPS FOR A CONSTANTLY BLOOMING GARDEN
To keep your garden constantly
ADD BEDDING PLANTS TO YOUR GARDEN!
Buying bedding plants is an easy way to add instant colour and impact to your outdoor space. Verve bedding plants are available all year round and are carefully selected to suit each season, so you can enjoy strong, healthy plants and long lasting flowering.
Outdoor planting follows three key seasons Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter with bedding plants designed to be refreshed each season, making it easy to update your garden as the months change. If you’re looking for plants that last year after year, Verve’s hardy and perennial ranges are a great choice, delivering reliable colour and structure that you can enjoy for seasons to come.
EASY PLANTS TO GROW AS BEGINNERS MARIGOLDS
are a great garden plant for beginners. Being low maintenance, they thrive in a variety of conditions and are ideal for borders, pots and vegetable gardens. Available as bedding plants or seeds, marigolds are a favourite for vibrant summer displays, delivering long lasting colour throughout the season and helping to brighten borders and containers.
SUNFLOWER
are easy to grow and thrive in sunny spots. They are known for their fast growth and produce seeds that can be replanted for future blooms. Sunflowers grow best when planted at the back of borders or against walls and fences, as this provides the support they need to grow tall.
PLANTING TIPS FOR APRIL AND MAY
During April and May an increase in daylight allows more to be grown outside. However, cold spells can still occur, so it’s important to protect plants when needed. Spring weather can surprise us all, ensure to water in dry periods and check drainage when heavy periods of rain occur.
To keep your garden thriving, start with healthy soil. Refresh beds with new soil, add mulch, and remove weeds early. Water the soil before sowing seeds and keep it moist while seeds germinate.
Also, prune Spring-flowering shrubs and sow vegetables for a productive season.
HOUSEPLANT TIPS FOR BEGINNERS
When choosing a houseplant, the most important thing is knowing where you want to place it and selecting a plant that suits the light levels in that space. For beginners, or for those unsure about light conditions, choosing a plant that performs well across a range of light levels makes things simple.
PEACE LILIES
are a great choice for first time houseplant owners, as they tolerate both bright and low light areas and need very little day to day care. During spring and summer, they benefit from being fed twice a month with Verve Liquid Plant Feed, while enjoying temperatures between 12–24°C.
Keep compost lightly moist, avoiding waterlogging. If your Peace Lily starts to need watering more than once a week, it may be ready to repot using Verve Peat Free Houseplant Compost. Verve’s 12cm Peace Lily fits perfectly into plant pots with an opening of 13cm or larger, such as the Verve White Ceramic Plant Pot, available in a range of colours and sizes.
For ongoing care, simply remove any dead leaves and gently wipe dust from the foliage with a damp cloth to keep your plant looking its best.

The Must Have Feature for Modern Homes
With over a third of the UK workforce now working from home on a regular basis, the way people design and use their homes is changing for good. New figures show that UK employees now spend an average of around 1.8 days per week working remotely, confirming that hybrid working is now a long term shift rather than a temporary trend.
As a result, more homeowners are choosing dedicated, purpose built garden offices instead of using spare bedrooms or shared living spaces. These outdoor workspaces allow people to create a clear separation between work and home life while maintaining a professional and productive environment.
“For many households, working from home is now part of everyday life,” said Natasha McCulloch, Sales Manager at Green Retreats. “That is driving demand for permanent, well specified garden offices that people can rely on day in, day out. Customers are no longer looking for temporary solutions. They want a space that feels like a real extension of their home.”
Property Value and Buyer Appeal
This shift is also being reflected in the property market. Garden offices
are increasingly featured in property listings, with platforms such as Rightmove highlighting outdoor workspaces as a desirable home feature for buyers looking for flexible living.
Estate agents have also noted the potential financial benefit. Luke Jackson at Michael Graham, a regional estate agent covering Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire and surrounding areas, adds: “A high quality garden room can boost the value of your home by 5-15%. It also attracts more buyers which often means quicker sales.”
Green Retreats has also published a detailed article exploring whether a garden room can add value to a property, based on estate agent insight and homeowner trends.
Looking Ahead to 2026
Homeowners are seeking fully insulated, year round buildings with a professional finish. Features such as proper heating, double glazing and insulation are now viewed as standard, helping garden offices feel like a true extension of the home. With demand continuing to grow, Green Retreats says March installation dates are now being booked, as more homeowners plan ahead for a more permanent approach to working from home.
Making More Room
Converting your loft is a practical and rewarding way to create more space in your house. Whether you need an extra bedroom, a home office, a playroom, or simply more storage, a loft conversion can meet your needs while adding value to your property. Here are some steps and considerations to help you make the most of your loft conversion.
Assess Feasibility
Before you start, assess the feasibility of a loft conversion. Check the height, pitch, and structure of your roof. Ideally, you need a minimum head height of 2.2 meters to ensure the space is usable. Consult with a structural engineer to evaluate whether your roof structure can support the conversion.
Plan Your Space
Decide how you want to use the space. This will determine the design and layout. For a bedroom, you'll need space for a bed and storage. For an office, consider desk space and shelving. Sketch out a rough floor plan to visualize the space.
Structural Considerations
Reinforce the floor if necessary. Loft floors may need strengthening to support additional weight. Install appropriate insulation to make the space comfortable year-round. Proper insulation also helps in soundproofing and energy efficiency.
Lighting and Ventilation
Maximize natural light by installing skylights or dormer windows. These also provide ventilation, which is crucial for maintaining air quality. Plan for artificial lighting with a mix of ambient, task, and accent lights to create a welcoming atmosphere.
Access
Ensure safe and practical access to your loft. A staircase is the best option, but it needs to be carefully designed to fit within the existing structure. Spiral staircases or compact designs can save space.
Utilities
Consider the placement of utilities like heating, electricity, and plumbing. You may need to extend existing systems or install new ones. This is crucial if you're adding a bathroom or kitchenette.
Finishing Touches
Choose finishes and furnishings that complement the rest of your home. Use light colours to make the space feel larger and more open. Built-in storage solutions can maximize space and keep the area clutterfree.
Budget
Set a realistic budget and include a contingency for unexpected expenses. Loft conversions can be cost-effective compared to building extensions, but costs can vary depending on the complexity of the project.
Professional Help
Hiring professionals like architects, builders, and interior designers can ensure your loft conversion is done to a high standard. They can provide valuable advice and manage the project efficiently.
By converting your loft, you can efectively increase the living space in your home, making it more functional and enjoyable. Whether you're accommodating a growing family or creating a personal retreat, a loft conversion is a worthwhile investment.

SPRING DECORATING TREND PREDICTIONS:
Outdoor In
“This look is inspired by an early spring garden. Featuring layers of soft florals, scalloped edges, fresh greens, mixed patterns and textures in soothing pastel tones with a vibrant spring feel and a mix of fresh spring greens. It comes together to create a serene space, the perfect setting in bringing the outdoors into the home.”
Colourful Refresh
“Celebrating colour in a playful way, Colourful Refresh brings a sense of optimism and renewed energy into the home. With bright pastel shades, it’s a
modern spring mix of patterns and textures. Ruffles, stripes and rattan all help to add character, creating a space that feels fresh and inspiring.”
6 WAYS TO INVITE SPRING INTO YOUR HOME…
Get playful with patterns
“If you want to embrace a maximalist look, spring is the perfect time to get playful with pattern. Start by choosing one hero print, whether that’s a bold floral or graphic stripe, and build around it. Contrast is key, mix larger prints with smaller designs to create depth. This works particularly well for bedding and soft furnishings, as an easy way to change up a blank canvas bedroom or living room. To keep it feeling curated rather than chaotic, use a consistent, intentional colour scheme.”
Textures and textiles
“To achieve a garden-inspired look, layer botanical prints across cushions
and soft furnishings. Mixing fresh greens with natural wood and leaf-patterned textile adds warmth and depth, offering an easy way to introduce the feeling of spring into the home.”
Contemporary curves
“A scalloped rug or tassel cushions will soften and add interest, while statement rugs and accessories with curved patterns adds a contemporary feel.”
Simple seasonal blooms
“Nothing refreshes a room for spring quite like fresh flowers and houseplants. A simple vase of tulips on a bedside table instantly adds colour and softness, while leafy houseplants bring texture and a sense of calm. It’s a super simple way to make the space feel lighter, brighter and in tune with the season.”
Serve up spring dining
“Adding a few wooden touches to your table - like serving boards, salad
bowls or even wooden-handled cutlery - is an easy way to make it feel warm and welcoming for spring. They pair beautifully with leafy or floral prints and instantly freshen things up. Layer tables with a leaf-print tablecloth, natural seagrass placemats and clear green glassware to transform a table, creating a welcoming space to make memories with loved ones – whether it’s for celebrating Mother’s Day, Easter or simply to elevate everyday dining.”
Colour contrast
“Use contrasting colours, such as turquoise and orange – from the bedroom, kitchen, living and dining table, for an instant lift. Even small touches, like coloured napkins or vases, offer a quick and easy update to pull the look together, making every room feel fresh, fun, and effortlessly styled.”

The event is set to take place on Saturday 4 April 2026 at the hospice’s 12.5-acre grounds in Risley – featuring a scavenger hunt, games, crafts, inflatables, stalls to browse, and a meet-and-greet with the hospice’s brand-new mascot.
The Easter Egg Hunt has been a popular event in the local community, attracting hundreds of families each year before it was paused in 2019. Its return aims to provide a family-friendly day out while supporting the hospice’s important services.
Funds raised will contribute to the future of Treetops Hospice and the specialist end-of-life care and bereavement support it provides to patients and families across the southern and central Derbyshire region.
As part of its commitment to supporting local families, Treetops will also be donating a number of free tickets to the poverty and deprivation charity, Derby Food 4 Thought Alliance. The charity will distribute these to families they support, helping ensure the day is accessible to those who might otherwise miss out.
The event will run from 10 AM to 2 PM, with scavenger hunts taking place in waves. Booking is now open for dedicated time slots.
Victoria Rocca, Relationships Manager at Treetops Hospice, said: “We are so pleased to be bringing back the Easter Egg Hunt.
“Community events like this are vital in helping us raise funds for our specialist care and shining a light on the services we provide.
“By joining us on 4th April at Treetops, you’ll enjoy plenty of Easter fun with the family, while helping to support your local hospice.”
Local businesses are also invited to get involved by donating chocolate eggs or prizes for the raffle and tombola. Tickets are priced at £5 per child (under 18), with adults free..

Bereavement can leave people feeling sad, lost, and sometimes confused, but an appropriate funeral and memorial can bring great comfort and peace. At the Willows Natural Burial Ground, the tranquil surroundings of wildflower meadows, woodland, and ponds can provide great solace for those left behind as they remember the person or people they have lost.
The Willows is a 10-acre family-owned natural burial site near South Croxton, with commanding views of the Charnwood countryside, where people can be buried in hand dug graves in eco-friendly coffins or caskets, made of biodegradable materials such as cardboard, willow, wool or banana leaf to name a few. Conversely, their ashes can be buried or subsurface scattered, either in bio-degradable urns or simply poured into or onto the ground.
A range of commemorative memorials are available, made of natural materials such as Welsh slate, and wood, while many people choose to remember their loved ones by planting a tree or native rose bush.
Owners Chris and Jenny Scroby and their family, have been transforming the bare fields with extensive tree and bulb planting since opening in 2011, inviting families of the
buried or pre-purchased plots, to join in at planting weekends. They recently purchased another 3,750 native British bluebell, snowdrop and daffodil bulbs, whilst simultaneously raising money for local charities.
The Willows caters for people of all faiths or no faith. The site can accommodate graveside funerals or act solely as a burial site after a service elsewhere. If families do have a service on site, their fee includes provision of a small pop-up shelter, with limited seating and soft drinks for those attending.
The natural burial option is a cost-effective alternative to a traditional cemetery burial or cremation. Chris and Jenny work with the family’s chosen funeral directors to ensure everything goes smoothly, whilst respecting the parameters set out to protect and promote the site as a natural, wildlife friendly environment.
Chris says: “We’re very pleased with our progress, which we see as our contribution in giving something back to nature and the environment.”
