What’s on this summer - join in! New Central Library update
A message from City Council Leader, Councillor David Mellen like to offer a huge thanks to all the residents who “tookWepartwould in the recent Nottingham City Big Spring Clean. It is always inspiring to see how much our residents care about their city and the selflessness and community spirit they have. I am delighted that we now have over 7,000 clean champions, 1,000 of whom joined during the Big Spring Clean campaign. I was pleased to get involved personally in litter picks within Dales ward.
the square to congratulate the players, manager, and team staff.
The past weeks have been the focus of much joy and celebration in the city. Nottingham Forest were promoted back to the Premier League for the first time in 23 years. We were proud to host the successful team at the Council House, where thousands of fans gathered in

Just a few days after that, the city was the centre of several events marking the Queens platinum jubilee and celebrating her 70 years of public service. I attended many events myself, as did my colleagues, both in the city centre and in all the city’s wards.
We thank the city for their “efforts to make all these events memorable.
We are also proud that we held a civic event on 22nd June to commemorate the Windrush generation and all their contributions to Nottingham City. After two difficult years due to COVID-19, it was a pleasure to have communal outpourings of joy and celebration.
We were extremely disappointed in the news from Government that they are considering appointing commissioners to oversee the city council. As a council we have been working well with the Improvement and Assurance Board. Under new leadership, we have cut our deficit and produced a four-year balanced budget. We are changing our culture and governance and have been transparent throughout the process. We will continue to work with the Government to achieve the best possible outcome for Nottingham. As we move through summer, we will be holding multiple events in the city. We will be welcoming back the beach in the square for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic. This will start on 25 July and provide seaside fun in Old Market Square. Nottingham Castle will be hosting performances covering historical events in Nottingham, giving entertertaining new takes on War of the Worlds and Much Ado About Nothing, and the much-anticipated greenpowered Land Train will start running to take visitors from Brewhouse Yard to Nottingham Castle.
Free fun and food events for children will also be running throughout the school holidays. These clubs in your local communities will offer children food and fun activities with their friends, while supporting working parents, and providing some help during this cost-of-living crisis. WE ARE PREMIER LEAGUE! WE ARE PROUD!
Nottingham celebrates as Nottingham Forest secures historic promotion, returning to the premier league for the first time in 23 years! On 30 May there were jubilant scenes in Old Market Square as thousands of people gathered to celebrate Nottingham Forest’s promotion to the Premier League. An estimated crowd of 25,000 fans watched players appearing on the Council House balcony to show off the Championship Play Off Trophy following their historic 1-0 victory over Huddersfield. Forest fans have waited 23 years for this moment – with their team pulling off this incredible achievement having languished at the bottom of the Championship league at the beginning of the season just a few months ago. 12
The triumphant players were greeted with thunderous cheers, applause and chants from their adoring fans after a formal Civic Reception with the Lord Mayor of Nottingham, Cllr Wendy Smith, and the Chief Executive of Nottingham City Council, Mel Barrett. The squad was joined in the Council House ballroom by manager Steve Cooper and owner Evangelos Marinakis.
“
It was so wonderful to share this historic moment with so many people in Nottingham and to formally congratulate the team on their return to the Premier League. I am thrilled that the club has secured Premier League status for the first time since 1999. It means so much to everyone connected to the club as well as to Nottingham residents and to the many thousands of fans in the UK and around the world. Cllr David Mellen, Leader of Nottingham City Council

HAVE YOUR SAY ON A NEW PRIVATE RENTED LICENSING SCHEME SELECTIVE LICENSING
We want your views on plans for a new Selective Licensing scheme for landlords to improve standards in rented homes.
A new scheme would help tackle issues we find in rented homes; like these:
Many of the 45,000+ privately rented properties in the city are well-managed but we are still finding badly managed homes, which are proven to cause issues in our local neighbourhoods.
Damp and mould
Selective Licence would help to tackle issues like:
No heating or hot water
Cold and draughty homes No smoke alarms or sensors not working Electrical safety issues
Poor property conditions Higher rates of anti-social behaviour Higher rates of Crime Deprivation A new licencing scheme would support the work already done to sort dangerous homes and make sure they meet legal standards, that they are safe and well managed.

Will this increase my rent? No, your landlord shouldn’t need to increase your rent, this is because an accredited licence costs £630 for 5 years, that’s roughly £10 a month. For example, if you’re told your rent is going up £50, that’s nearly £2,400 profit over 5 years. Plus, most landlords already have a licence, so any past increases should cover the cost. 21
NEW HOMES FOR NOTTINGHAM PEOPLE The Nottingham City Council is working with Nottingham City Homes to build a range of high-quality and energy-efficient homes, which will be let for affordable rents to local people and families on our council house waiting list. NEW CENTRAL LIBRARY PROJECT GETS UNDERWAY Work will be starting in July to create the three-storey library in Southside. The work involves turning the shell of the building – part of the new Broad Marsh Car Park and Bus Station – into a bright, modern library. The new library will have a fantastic children’s area with a special story telling room, lots of books to choose from and comfortable areas to sit and read, as well as: Free wi-fi and free access to computers, laptops and iPads A café and ground floor reception A specialist and rare collections room A learning area for special activities and school visits Meeting rooms, exhibition space and more. 26
The new library is a key part of the regeneration of the Southside area and is surrounded by pedestrianfriendly streets, beautifully planted areas and new seating, making it a great place to walk, cycle and relax.

“
I’m really pleased that this key development in the regeneration of the city’s Southside can now go ahead. We have been committed to providing a new Central Library that meets modern needs and expectations and, while for a number of reasons it has taken a little longer to get to this stage, it’s exciting that work can now get underway. I’d also like to thank people for their involvement in the consultation about the future of community libraries and assure you that your consultation responses are being looked at, and we hope to update you soon.
