Nottingham’s Big Spring Clean - join in! What’s on in Nottingham including celebrations for the Queen’s Jubilee Pictured: The Queen visits Nottingham in 1949

A message from City Council Leader, Councillor David Mellen During March 2022, Nottingham City Council will work on “setting a balanced budget for the next four years so that we can continue delivering the services people need and rely on. This hasn’t been easy, and we have had to make some hard decisions and reduce services in some areas. We need to be realistic and clever about how we deliver our services; we are still an ambitious city striving to improve things for all our residents. Despite the challenges, we have high hopes for the year ahead. We’re moving forward with our vision to be the first city in the country to become carbon neutral by 2028. The first annual review of our Carbon Neutral Action Plan shows we are on track and explains how it is improving life for the city’s residents.

We have secured over £24 million to support people living throughout Nottingham to make their homes more energy efficient. This includes installing free solar panels on 650 homes and helping people make energy saving improvements through their whole home – supporting them with the cost of living as well as tackling climate change. Nearly 14,500 trees have been planted which is taking CO2 out of the air and making areas look better.

Over 130 public electric vehicle charging points have been installed across the city and 30% of council-owned vehicles are now Ultra Low Emission, making sure Nottingham is set up for the future.

Nottingham Financial Resilience Partnership want to hear from residents across the city about their views and experiences on

so that they can make sure they are doing all possible to help Nottingham people during a difficult period due to the cost of living crisis and other factors. Across Nottingham, the Council, through Nottingham City Homes, continues to build a range of affordable homes – helping bring unused land back into use as well as improving housing waiting lists. 650 new council houses have been built since 2019, with more than 300 more planned or in the pipeline across Nottingham over the next two years. Last year, new council homes were built off Tunstall Drive in Basford and Knights Close in Top Valley. Work has also begun on more than 100 homes in Bestwood and 36 apartments in Clifton on the site of the Southchurch garages. There are also several private housing developments taking place across the city, showing the confidence investors have in our city.

Outside of the city “centre there are also

lots of regeneration and improvement projects taking place.

On Spondon Street, plans for the Sherwood Library are taking shape which, along with improving the library itself, will include housing, retail units and car parking paid for by developers. In the Meadows, it is good to see the consultation underway for improvements to the Victoria Embankment following a successful lottery funding bid worth over £1 million. Likewise, plans are progressing for upgrades to Bulwell Bus Station, including an improved layout, new shelter and canopies, and changes to make the station more environmentally friendly.

Recycle it RIGHT! Your food and drink packaging doesn’t want to be rubbish – help it find a new lease of life by recycling! Right now, only 13% of the waste we collect is recycling – and 4% of that is contaminated with incorrect items like dirty nappies or other non-recyclables.

So what can you do?

Not everything that is plastic can be recycled – soft plastics like carrier bags and bin bags cannot be recycled in your household recycling bin and if your recycling is in a bag, we cannot recycle it.

Remember, it’s Reduce, Re-use, Recycle – in that order. Buy food and other items that don’t come in plastic packaging whenever you can. Never put recycling into your bin inside plastic bags – recycling facilities can’t cope with them and it will mean we can’t recycle any of your waste. Plastic bags go to drop-off points at supermarkets along with bread bags and other soft plastics. Take cartons to Terra-Cycle collection points – find your nearest one at terracycle.com Garden waste collections resume on 1 April 2022. If you produce a lot of garden waste you can now purchase an additional garden waste bin and subscribe annually to the additional garden waste collection service for £25 per year (and delivery cost). nottinghamcity.gov.uk/gardenwaste 12

RECYCLING AND RUBBISH RECYCLING

(Paper, Card, Plastic, Cans and Glass)

Please only place paper, card, plastic, cans and glass into your recycling bin.

General rubbish Plastic bags or film

Newspapers and Magazines

Clothing, textiles or shoes

Toilet and kitchen roll tubes

Egg boxes

Cans and aerosols

Nappies

Electrical items Polystyrene

Hard plastics, toys and furniture Takeaway boxes or containers

Card and Cardboard

Glass bottles and jars

Plastic bottles, tubes, trays and containers

Why is contamination a big issue? When non-recyclable material ends up in the recycling bin it is called contamination. Contamination makes sorting recycling incredibly expensive and difficult. It not only reduces the quality of the recycling in the whole bin truck it also harms the environment and costs the tax payer. 13

Setting Nottingham City Council’s budget for the 2022/23 financial year

Councils must set a balanced budget and it has been another difficult process with tough decisions to make, requiring £28 million of savings to be made in the next financial year alone. Thank you to everyone who took part in the budget consultation. Your feedback is appreciated, and our teams have listened carefully to what people have told us and acted on your views and suggestions. The changes follow feedback from residents and businesses, trade unions and staff in the biggest-ever consultation on the council’s budget in recent years. Around 700 responses were received during the budget consultation resulting in the following suggested changes to the savings proposals: •

Reducing the Children’s Centre saving and retaining four centres rather than the three originally proposed

•

Increasing the number of Play and Youth Services staff that will be retained

•

Withdrawing the proposal to charge for toilets at Greyhound Street.

The council has agreed a balanced four-year budget plan through to 2025/26, which is key to delivering the city’s Together for Nottingham improvement programme.

Covid-19: Taking the next step together #TakeCareNottingham Restrictions may now be over, but Covid-19 has not gone away. We can learn to live with it and help keep people safe if we carry on taking a few simple precautions.

Get vaccinated Getting two vaccines and a booster gives you the best protection against the virus. If you haven’t been vaccinated yet, it’s not too late. Anyone over 16 can walk into a vaccination centre, and there are special clinics for children aged 5+. People aged over 75 and those who are clinically vulnerable will be invited for a fourth jab in the spring to help keep them safe from the virus. Saving Victoria Embankment Memorial Gardens for future generations Work will soon begin to return Victoria Embankment Memorial Gardens to their former glory, thanks to support from the National Lottery and match funding from the Transforming Cities Fund and the War Memorials Trust. A new visitor centre will be built, and the fountains, pond and flower beds will be restored. After asking park visitors and local groups their views, the plans to develop the area are based on the views of park users, veteran groups, and the Memorial Gardens Association.

The work will include: • Restoring the war memorial and Queen Victoria statue • Renovating the pond and fountains • Improving paths to make sure everyone can use them • Replanting the original flower beds • Installing new benches • Creating a visitor centre, including public toilets • Developing a World War 2 Roll of Honour

As well as breathing new life into one of the city’s most historic parks, the refurbishment will create several jobs and allow future generations to enjoy the Memorial Gardens for many years to come. The work will start in March and is expected to take around eight months. Follow along with the progress at NottinghamParks

NEW VISION FOR BROAD MARSH POSITIVE FEEDBACK FOR THE CITY’S NEW BROADMARSH CAR PARK

BRINGING BACK BROAD MARSH’S ‘GREEN HEART’ A new vision for Broad Marsh announced a few weeks ago has been described as a “once in many generations” opportunity for Nottingham to lead the way in city centre regeneration following the impacts of Covid-19 and online retailing. An independent advisory group, established by the council to build on its successful ‘Big Conversation’ about Broad Marsh, commissioned worldrenowned British designer Thomas Heatherwick to create the new vision which would:

With Covid restrictions easing, it’s been great to see more and more people coming back into the city centre. Have you used the new Broad Marsh car park yet? Opened in November last year, the car park has been getting lots of positive feedback. Visitors have been impressed with how easy it is to use – you don’t need a ticket, just pay with your contactless card, and empty spaces are easily found thanks to a clever red and green light system. The car park is also thought to be one of the greenest in the country, with 81 electric vehicle charging points and enough solar panels to power the whole building. 24

ambitious

City Council Leader, Cllr David Mellen, said: “We are now carrying out the important work necessary to test the new vision and our ability to realise it. We have said all along that this isn’t something the council can or would want to do on its own. We will continue to work with colleagues on the advisory group to develop a masterplan for the space and secure the investment needed from public and private sector partners. This will take time to get right but people will see major changes soon.” 25
