As I reflect upon the 2020-21 school year, I pause to consider how our theme, “United in Faith,” grounded Notre Dame Preparatory School in its founding tenets and inspired the work of the year.

Unity is the charism, the driving spirit, of the School Sisters of Notre Dame, NDP’s founding order. The quote at left from Blessed Mother Theresa of Jesus Gerhardinger, SSND foundress, expresses her vision for communities that would move in concert, throughout the world and across time, bringing people together in God’s love. Since 1873, this principle, expressed through the mission of transformative education, has inspired the Notre Dame Prep community to model Micah’s words to “act justly, love tenderly, and walk humbly with God.”

Last year was no exception as “United in Faith,” Notre Dame Prep faced challenges and circumstances, many of which were outside the school’s control as the global pandemic affected nearly every aspect of our lives. Along the way, students, families, faculty and staff, alumnae, and friends supported each other and demonstrated the selfless love that animates our faith and our beloved school. Through thoughtful planning, incredible creativity, generous support, and steadfast commitment we were able to deliver to students an experience rich in learning, deep in tradition, and unifying in spirituality. We are proud of all that our students accomplished and the way our community joined together to meet the educational needs of what were truly extraordinary times.

I hope this report appropriately captures some of the moments that defined the 2020-21 school year, celebrates the generosity shown to Notre Dame, and showcases the possibilities the future holds for a school steadfast in mission, strong in love, and united in faith. In looking back at how the Notre Dame community came together for the good of the students, it inspires in me tremendous gratitude for each member of the NDP family, and I pray in thanksgiving for all you have given, and continue to give, to Notre Dame Prep.

STEAM

COVID

COVID-19 forced the reimagining of all activities at NDP. From hybrid instruction and wellness campaigns to beloved traditions presented in new and exciting ways, the Notre Dame community was united in its mission to provide a holistic, comprehensive, and safe educational experience for all amidst the pandemic. Much appreciation goes to NDP's volunteer Medical and Public Health Advisory Team, who, together with the administration, worked to create a safe environment.

Thanks are also given to Laurie Jones, coordinator of special projects, for shepherding COVID-19 health and safety this year.

CLASS OF 2021

NDP celebrated its 181-member Class of 2021 at the in-person Baccalaureate Liturgy and inperson Graduation Ceremony in May. Nearly 70% of the class earned more than $30 million in merit scholarships and grants. During this unprecedented year, NDP found new ways to celebrate the Class of 2021, including Spirit Wear Days and monthly treats, Gamberdella’s home-delivered graduation dress “viewing boxes,” and when the senior class was unable to go on its annual New York City Trip, NDP brought NYC to the students! A Senior Class trip to the Baltimore Zoo provided one last class experience before graduation.

With hybrid instruction, the newly opened Jane Kroh Satterfield Innovation Wing was abuzz with STEAM activity. Upper Level students forged paths with the new Computer Science Honor Society and the Women in Technology Club, and for the second year, NDP received the College Board’s AP Computer Science Female Diversity Award.

FACULTY & STAFF

Through the robust IDT program and monthly STEAM challenges, Middle Level students learned skills, connected information across subjects, and discovered the possible STEAM careers that await them.

ACADEMICS

Academic excellence proves constant at NDP, even in a pandemic. Middle Level students met in person four days a week for classes. In the Upper Level, a staggered schedule grew from two in-person instruction days per week, plus community days, to 100% capacity for juniors and seniors in May, followed by freshman and sophomores after graduation.

Upper and Middle Level students received local and national honors for overall achievement and success in various disciplines.

The school’s 15 honor societies inducted a combined 230-plus high school students. Activities such as cultural celebrations, academic competitions, and special programming rounded out the academic experience.

A dedication to excellence and genuine love for their students characterize NDP’s outstanding faculty and staff. As they navigated hybrid teaching, teachers lived out their educational vocation. Our staff and administration showed similar commitment as they worked to ensure the seamless and safe operation of the school. Several of our teachers were honored locally and nationally for their contributions to their respective disciplines. In June, NDP celebrated 10 retirees: Barbara Barr, math; Bill Duffy, maintenance and facilities; Sue Eisenhart, Middle Level director; Elaine Gottschalk, math; Christine Kaiser, math and former dean of students; Mary O’Hara, social studies; Dennis Peters, social studies; Craig Scheiner, maintenance and facilities; Rosemary “Peachy” Schmuff, library; and Al Stottlemyer, maintenance and facilities.

SPIRITUALITY

Even though COVID-19 required social distancing, spiritual life at NDP continued to flourish, bringing to life the year’s theme, “United in Faith.” Daily prayer, beautiful virtual liturgies, and prayer services marked special events and religious seasons all the while fortifying NDP’s spiritual mission.

AWARDS

Notre Dame Prep received numerous honors and recognitions during the 2020-21 school year, most notably the National Blue Ribbon of Excellence, making NDP the only Catholic or AIMS school in the region to receive this award.

For the 10th consecutive year, NDP was named a Baltimore Sun Top Workplace. NDP garnered three Baltimore’s Style Magazine Readers’ Choice Awards (best high school, best middle school, best high school teacher, Tom Peri), and ranked as the top Catholic girls school on Niche.com and a top private school in The Daily Record.

SERVICE

Aligned with mission, NDP’s robust Service Program ably adjusted to the limitations COVID-19 presented, providing new ways for Middle and Upper Level students to assist marginalized communities through social service programs. Traditions such as Penny Queen continued, as did the annual Christmas Adopta-Family program. In the spring, Coffee House was held under the school tent to benefit the Thirst Project, and the annual Dinner with our Elders morphed into Seniors Serving Seniors, which provided gifts and meals from the Class of 2021 to senior citizens living in public housing.

STUDENT LIFE

Student life at NDP proved vibrant and fun even in a global pandemic.

Traditions continued, some with a twist: Students proceeded through the Gateway masked, Junior Ring was held outside, Tree Trim became a drive-through event, and FatherDaughter Night was a drive-in evening at Bengies theater. The juniors enjoyed a “Night Under the Lights,” and the 8th Grade Swim Show launched on dry land.

Gym Meet was held thanks to creative planning, which included socially distanced practices, filmed performances for judges, outdoor march and song captured by a drone, a Facebook Premiere video, and a virtual Mini Gym Meet for prospective students. NDP’s newest tradition, the Sophomore Pin Ceremony, emerged in honor of the Hampton campus’ 60th anniversary.

COMMUNITY

NDP’s theme for the year, “United in Faith,” defined school spirit, which remained strong during the pandemic. In what was the school’s 60th anniversary on Hampton Lane, special events, some reimagined, others rescheduled, brought festivity to the community, including the Athletic Hall of Fame, Foundress Society, and Hampton Awards Ceremony, the Virtual Spring Gala, and redesigned Gateway Reunion. The community united for Blazer Dash, Attire4Hire, Stuff-a-Bus, the new Sister Helen Marie Duffy Student Sponsorship Program, and the Beyond the Classroom information series.

Notre Dame Prep’s formal Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Commitments were spearheaded by STRIVE, NDP’s Anti-Racism Task Force, and approved by NDP’s Board of Trustees. These commitments are an expression of NDP’s Catholic identity and serve as a touchstone for NDP’s work promoting justice and equality. Many thanks are given to those whose gifts of time, talent, and treasure continue to fortify Notre Dame Prep.

ATHLETICS

During the abbreviated athletic seasons, NDP celebrated senior athletes, engaged in interscholastic competition, and livestreamed games for the first time ever.

Thirteen varsity athletes were named IAAM All-Stars, 13 students signed to Division I schools, while an additional nine committed to play DII and DIII athletics. Terri Byrd, physical education teacher and swim coach, was named the Varsity Sports Network Girls Swimming Coach of the Decade.

THE ARTS

NDP’s Chamber Choir, Orchestra, and Jazz Ensemble presented a virtual Christmas Concert, and the Concert Choir's rendition of “O Holy Night” recreated on Love Field was recorded, shared widely on social media, and aired on several local news broadcasts.

The Performing Arts Department successfully collaborated and produced the online musical “Godspell Jr.,” featuring Upper and Middle Level students and premiering on Facebook. In the spring, NDP’s celebration tent afforded recital and concert space for dancers, musicians, and singers.

Visual arts students and faculty remained active throughout the year, participating in projects such as CW Project Greenway, Middle Made Design Challenge, the Memory Project, and the Scholastic Art Awards Program.

Each year, NDP can draw up to four percent of our endowment dollars. STRENGTH, RESILIENCE, LOVE: HONORING LISA DECKER ALVEY ’89

T

o refer to a person so full of life, love, faith, and boundless potential in the past tense is a hard concept to grasp. Lisa Decker Alvey ’89, a pioneer in the male-dominated world of engineering, died in November 2020, leaving behind her husband Spencer, their son Kellan, and a host of family and friends.

Those who loved Lisa have united to remember her at Notre Dame Prep. In May, Lisa’s family and friends came together to bless a tree, planted in her memory. The tree stands as a metaphor for Lisa’s life, as it was at NDP where she dug deep roots which helped form the sturdy branches of a life well lived.

That is why Lisa’s husband, along with their close friends, decided to create the Lisa Decker Alvey ’89 Scholarship Fund at NDP in her memory.

“ NDP LAID THE FOUNDATION FOR THE STRONG AND RESILIENT WOMAN LISA GREW TO BECOME. SHE CHERISHED THE LESSONS SHE LEARNED HERE AT NDP, TO LOVE GOD, TO LOVE HERSELF, AND TO SERVE HER COMMUNITY.” Lisa’s scholarship is awarded to an incoming student interested in Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math, just like Lisa. After graduating from NDP, Lisa went on to receive advanced degrees from Virginia Tech in Civil Engineering-Construction Engineering & Management.

She became an integral part of The Whiting-Turner Contracting Company, starting as a Project Manager and rising through the ranks, serving as a Vice President and the company’s Security Facility Officer. While job and family kept Lisa busy, she always found time to share her love of engineering with students, especially those at NDP.

In starting the endowed scholarship fund, Spencer Alvey says that it is more than just an interest in STEAM that the perfect candidate for the scholarship possesses. Family and friends hope the recipient will mirror Lisa’s strength, compassion, and humility: “We hope we can help other young women believe in themselves, to strive to be strong and resilient, and love themselves as Lisa found here at NDP.” Lisa’s engineering experience at the NDP of the 1980s was markedly different compared to present day. Today's STEAM students have a multitude of resources at their disposal, thanks to the enhanced curriculum taught in the Jane Kroh Satterfield Innovation Wing. It is there that students are exposed to Civil Engineering classes as well as architecture, design, and aero-space engineering, just to name a few of the courses offered.

Like the tree planted in her memory, the Lisa Decker Alvey ’89 Scholarship Fund will continue to grow through gifts.

hrough the Sister Helen Marie Duffy Student Sponsorship Program, individuals, families, foundations, and businesses can sponsor a student by funding that student’s education for four years in the Upper Level or for seven years should the student start NDP in the Middle Level. These grants can cover a portion or all of a student’s annual tuition starting at $2,500/year.

Launched in the spring of 2020 in response to an overwhelming number of financial aid requests, this program honors Sister Helen Marie Duffy, SSND, who served NDP for 59 years, 18 of them as its beloved Headmistress until her retirement in 1995.

She was known for her selflessness and her love of NDP students.

While endowed scholarship funds provide support to students in perpetuity, student sponsorships provide dollars that are immediately available for students in need of financial assistance.

In FY 2021, donors pledged more than $200,000 to support students in NDP’s Upper Level. These dollars made it possible to bring a number of new students to NDP in the fall of 2021.

As NDP strives to be a more inclusive and economically diverse community, this program will continue to grow.

he Legacy Circle honors those alumnae and friends who secure the financial well-being of Notre Dame Preparatory School by remembering Notre Dame through their wills, trusts, beneficiary designations, or life income gifts. We are profoundly grateful for the generosity and forethought of these visionary donors, whose gifts will impact many future generations of Notre Dame students.

We are pleased to share the story of Lynn Pforr, a cherished member of our Legacy Circle. Lynn (née Keigler) Pforr began teaching at NDP in September of 1981. Although she put in many long hours at school, she remembers that coming to work each day was a joy. After eight wonderful years, Lynn left full-time teaching when her husband retired but has returned many times over the years as a long-term substitute teacher. She said fondly, “It’s always a joy to return to a place that holds such happy memories, and it’s true that while many things might change, some things remain the same.”

Lynn has not only pledged to sponsor a student for four years through the Sister Helen Marie Duffy Student Sponsorship Program, but she has also made a bequest intention that will benefit Notre Dame Prep in the future.

When asked why she made the decision to remember NDP in her estate plan, she shared. “ MY FATHER ALWAYS SAID THAT IF SOMETHING HAS BEEN MEANINGFUL IN YOUR LIFE, YOU SHOULD GIVE BACK TO IT. I see this gift as giving back to something that gave and continues to give so much to me. I hope that the money will continue the excellent education these young women receive. I also hope it will help to keep the curriculum current and meaningful with up-to-date technology. The 2021 NDP Gala celebrated 60 years on Hampton Lane. otre Dame Preparatory School closed its Limitless capital campaign in June of 2020. We are grateful for the generosity of the NDP community, which provided the funds necessary both to construct the Jane Kroh Satterfield Innovation Wing, which opened for students and teachers in January of 2020, and to grow the funds available for student scholarships and financial aid. Twenty-four new endowed scholarship funds were created through Limitless, while an additional 14 existing scholarships were funded during the campaign.

We are grateful to the more than 1,000 donors who helped NDP raise more than $10.3 million through Limitless.

They sacrificed much to provide a great education for my brother and me. I believe that an NDP education is worth every penny, but now it is beyond the reach of many families, especially immigrant families. The Limitless Campaign awakened in me a need to do my part to ensure that girls from immigrant families benefit from an NDP education. I chose to name it the ‘Nuestra Senora’ Fund, Notre Dame in Spanish, representing my parents’ native tongue and the native tongue of past and present Hispanic immigrant parents.”

This display, located in the Jane Kroh Satterfield Innovation Wing, honors those individuals who made gifts to Notre Dame Preparatory School’s capital campaign, Limitless: Redefining Possibilities, Unleashing Potential. Bernini’s “Dove of the Holy Spirit,” a stained-glass window from St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City, inspired this design.

The names in this permanent display represent those donors giving $25,000 or more, and the scrolling screen includes all donors to the campaign. W

e look back on the 2020-21 school year through the lens of this year’s theme, With Grateful Hearts. Despite the difficulties encountered due to COVID-19 and the various ways it restricted our ability to gather together last year, you were there to support and sustain Notre Dame Preparatory School’s mission, and we are profoundly grateful. In the Advancement Office, we continued our work to nurture relationships and request community support, even as regular ways of doing business were inevitably abandoned. We were able to continue moving forward last year because of your support. Thank you!

Pillars. The title of this annual report was originally chosen not only to describe the stone pillars—built to represent the Bible’s seven pillars of Wisdom—that support the front entranceway of our Hampton Lane home, but also to refer to the pillars of NDP’s mission—academic excellence, spiritual growth, and the practice of justice.

Through the pages of this publication this year, we have also attempted to illustrate the pillars of community philanthropic support—the many ways to give to NDP— that sustain and strengthen the important work we do at NDP today and hope to do for many years to come.

The work of our teachers, coaches, administrators, counselors, and staff is vital as our students grow into women who will be forces for good in the broader community.

Notre Dame Prep’s Advancement Office is committed to working hard every day to raise the dollars necessary to support that sacred work and to ensure that we are good stewards of those dollars you have so generously given.
