lthough COVID-19 required Notre Dame Preparatory School to close its campus in mid-March, faith

knitted the community of students, educators, administrators, and families together during this unexpected and challenging time.

Faith remains central to NDP’s identity as a Catholic school and is at the heart of the School Sisters of Notre Dame charism of unity, which draws all people into the oneness of God’s love. While we missed our school community each day we were apart, the sign above, one erected on Hampton Lane and another on Providence Road, reminded us all that we are never truly separated from one another.

November 2020 Dear Friends, Greetings! As I reflect upon the 2019-20 academic year, I stand in awe of the Notre Dame Preparatory School community. From our students, past and present, to our faculty and staff, parents, alumnae, and friends, each one of you reminds me why we are here. Each one of you shines a light on our school’s mission of transformational education and faith formation. For that, I thank you, and I continue to keep you in my prayers. Our school year took an unexpected turn when in March, because of the COVID pandemic, our world seemed to change overnight, and the routine of the school day changed dramatically. We found ourselves, as

With the Gospel as a Guide

ollowing the death of George Floyd earlier this year, people of all races and backgrounds renewed conversations about the deeply painful

and emotional issue of racism. Such conversations occurred among members of the NDP community, some of which included painful stories by alumnae of color whose experiences prompted the school to review past and current efforts and to consider what more could be done to make NDP more welcoming and more inclusive. This institutional introspection included a review of how NDP educates students about the sin of racism in light of Catholic social teaching and the Gospel values we are called to live as Christians and as members of the human family. The administration invited every member of the faculty and each department to view anti-racism

The Gift of Educational Technology in the Time of COVID-19

f the past seven months have proven anything, it is that many at Notre Dame Preparatory School have a tremendous ability to pivot and

adapt swiftly. Teachers, administrators, and staff anticipated the impact of COVID-19, and in a few short days, they were able to modify a hands-on curriculum so that it could be presented virtually. Days of professional development led to the creation of Zoom classrooms, and faculty prepared to keep students engaged in unique ways from afar. Now, as NDP students start a new school year from home, teachers continue to explore creative ways to deliver virtual lessons even more effectively. Enter NDP’s Internal Technology Committee. This group of dedicated educators met with colleagues once a week during the summer for Tech Time, which addressed topics ranging from using familiar tools to practicing brand new applications. Julia Goffredi, committee member and language teacher, shared that “teachers have been excited to add new strategies to their arsenal to make learning engaging and fun, both in person and online.” The committee led NDP’s first Virtual Laptop Workshop for new Upper Level students during the summer. Using interactive modules, students, who in “normal” times would have attended Laptop Camp on campus, explored PrepNet, Office 365, WeVideo, and NoodleTools virtually. Students also learned the importance of online etiquette, digital literacy, and cybersecurity. The workshop ended with each student creating a video through which she introduced herself virtually to her new NDP sisters. NDP is thankful for those who, through their generous support of our programs, make it possible for our school to be a leader in educational technology. While it is our prayer that we are fully reunited soon, we rest a bit easier knowing that we are providing the best education to our students regardless of the circumstances. ||||||| annual report 2020 •

hen the bell rang that March day, no one knew that it signaled the beginning of a new way of learning and living for the NDP community due to COVID-19. The following are excerpts from interviews with students, parents, faculty, and staff members who faced the challenge of the pandemic with Blazer-

“ For teachers, the silver lining has been the realization that we are capable of much more than we sometimes realize. Another silver lining is just a deep and enriched appreciation for those faceto-face rituals. Coffee in the morning, saying hello in the hallway, reading the energy in the classroom. They have become sacred, and missed, but undoubtedly a greater part of our consciousness than ever before.”

Seniors and Traditions

here are memes and social media posts calling for a quick and permanent end to the year 2020. They make us laugh, and they make us

think about all that has been postponed or canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic. The thoughts of all that would be or could be lost indelibly affected the senior experience of all members of the Class of 2020, around the world, in our nation, and here at Notre Dame Preparatory School. NDP prides itself on tradition. From those which signal a girl’s first days on campus to those which send her off into her future, shared NDP experiences connect our students across grades and across decades. This spring, Notre Dame Prep made a commitment to celebrate the Class of 2020 and uphold beloved senior traditions, most especially graduation, regardless of the challenges that COVID-19 and social distancing posed. The day the student body learned they would be going home for an extended period of time was just a few days following Gym Meet. Seniors had little time to celebrate their victory as whispers of “some bizarre virus” led to and required meetings on virtual learning. The State of Maryland made the ultimate decision for schools as our girls packed up what they could and headed home in mid-March. While our seniors wondered what the last months of their high school careers would look like, Notre Dame community members began working on plans for a memorable senior spring. Planning started in midMarch with tremendous faculty and staff engagement,

Signs congratulating the mighty Class of Pink and Blue popped up all over town, on the lawns of the very homes in which the girls were quarantined. A virtual awards ceremony was held, as was a senior celebration broadcast over Facebook, allowing parents, grandparents, faculty, and alumnae to join. challenges of a pandemic, the Class of 2020 met another challenge, one from a donor to the Limitless Campaign that inspired them to succeed in the Senior Class Gift effort. The Senior Class Gift honors the spirit of philanthropy and service at NDP, paying it forward by giving back. This gift is a final joint effort of seniors and their parents that leaves a lasting legacy at NDP. In recent years, classes have voted to select projects for their senior gift. This year’s class was challenged by a donor to raise funds for a scholarship that the donor would match dollar for dollar, up to $25,000. The only catch? Raise the match in 40 days! Was the Class of 2020 up for the challenge? You bet! Small and mighty, the 131-member class formed a dedicated committee including student leaders Grace Hayden, Abigail Rudolph, Catherine Kinkopf, and Noelle Hargrave, as well as many other classmates who helped along the way. Senior parents, Kristen and Michael Rudolph and Mary and Jim Hayden, served as parent co-chairs in this effort to rally parent support. Families of the Class of 2020 worked to reach an overall Senior Class Gift fundraising goal of $50,000 to create the Class of 2020 Scholarship Fund. Thanks to the generous donor who provided the challenge match, the first $25,000 raised was matched dollar for dollar. As a result, this effort raised a total of $75,000 for an endowed class scholarship, an amazing legacy for the Class of 2020. To help meet the overall fundraising goal, the senior class planned a dress-down fundraiser for the student body and hoped to raise $2,020 from students toward the overall goal. Committee members asked all NDP students to donate a minimum of $1 to dress casually for the day. The senior class led the way by donating more than any other class and ultimately exceeded their $2,020 goal. As a result, the seniors were able to “name the path” that runs from the junior parking lot to the school campus. Members of the Class of 2020 were the first juniors to walk this path, and they adopted it as their own. Now, everyone who walks that path will remember the Class of 2020, a class that led the way in the classroom, in the community, on the field, and through a pandemic. Most important, the Class of 2020 will live on in the spirit of future Blazers who will be able to attend NDP because of the funds provided through the Class of 2020 Endowed Scholarship Fund.
