Over this past year, the University launched a five-year strategic plan entitled, Going Beyond: Vision 2025. In it, we outline five strategic goals that continue to provide a framework for how the University will continue to meet the needs of our students and the community through 2025. The stories shared in this year’s Universitas demonstrate the resilience of the NDMU community to successfully navigated of the pandemic, while at the same time advancing the University forward with new academic programs, record fundraising, an enhanced technological infrastructure, and strong fiscal stewardship. Additionally, I am very proud of faculty and students in the School of Pharmacy who hosted campus COVID vaccination clinics and fully vaccinated nearly 4,000 Marylanders. Because of your generosity and historic gifts, the University also enjoyed a second-straight year in record fundraising with $17.5 million raised in fiscal year 2021, up from $17.2 million in the previous fiscal year. Going Beyond: Vision 2025 is guiding the University to even greater heights. In summer 2019, a strategic planning task force, led by President Marylou Yam with input from the Board of Trustees, began the process to devise a five-year strategic plan to advance NDMU forward. The result is Going Beyond: Vision 2025, a robust plan that advances the University’s mission to educate leaders to transform the world.

HONORING NDMU’S FIRST 100 YEARS A book chronicling Notre Dame of Maryland University’s rich history from its opening in 1895 through its centennial in 1995 was published in March 2021 by Cornell University Press. Meticulously researched by Sister Mary Oates, Pursuing Truth: How Gender Shaped Catholic Education at the College of Notre Dame depicts the courage of the School Sisters of Notre Dame (SSND) foundresses to establish and sustain the nation’s first Catholic college to award female students a four-year degree.

The book tells the stories of the pioneering Catholic women educators and administrators who taught generations of students, guided the school’s development through adversity, and maintained its identity as a women’s liberal arts college. It celebrates the fortitude of the women who paved the way for the school that would become today’s Notre Dame of Maryland University.

About 200 NDMU students, faculty, and staff volunteered at campus COVID vaccination clinics in spring 2021, fully vaccinating 3,850 people around the region, and pharmacy students, guided by faculty, donated 75 hours to vaccinate local residents with the Baltimore City Health Department. Undergraduate presenters at the annual Nancy Kreiter Student Research Day regularly go on to publish their work, including a 2020 graduate who co-authored a scientific journal article with Johns Hopkins University scientists. NDMU remains a leader in women’s education with the launch of the innovative IMPRINT program, which provides a platform for Women’s College students to grow their leadership skills. These are just a few examples of how the NDMU community is going beyond expectations to educate leaders to transform the world. Go BeyoND: The Campaign for NDMU positions the University for the future and charts a bold direction to meet the needs of our community, both on and off campus. BEYOND CAMPUS Rochelle Thompson ’23 is an outstanding student, volunteer, and leader. Her extensive campus activities and community involvement reflect her commitment to service. The opportunity to be a mentor to local youth through NDMU’s York Road Education and Service (YES) Program has been especially meaningful. “I believe in the importance of mentoring at the community level,” Rochelle said. “Through mentorship, you can equip a generation with the tools and support they need to succeed.”

BEYOND EXPECTATIONS Ashley Anderson ’22 has big dreams of becoming a biomedical researcher, using science to improve human health. Ashley is a 2021-22 scholar in the Sr. Alma Science Year program, an endowed NDMU scholarship that places top biology students in research internships at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Her academic and leadership experiences at Notre Dame catapulted her to an internship where she is working with the world’s top scientists. “I really love the mentorship that I’ve experienced through this internship,” she said. “I do love medicine. With this internship, I really do appreciate doing the research that will eventually be used in medicine.” The Sr. Alma Science Year program prepares students for graduate study and careers in biomedical research with critical hands-on experience. Because the program is only open to Women’s College students, the opportunity to conduct research in an elite internship becomes more accessible to any biology major who demonstrates excellence in the classroom and advanced research.

BEYOND TODAY Notre Dame is exploring new frontiers in STEM education at a time when science and healthcare professionals are in high demand. Go BeyoND: The Campaign for NDMU will provide much needed support for faculty researchers, such as Chemistry Department Chair Jocelyn McKeon and Associate Professor of Biology Jennifer Kerr. Dr. McKeon is engaging students in realworld research that is breaking ground in scientific discovery, including developing chemistry methodology that has never been done before. “It’s just so satisfying to see students get an interest in something in chemistry and just run with it,” said Dr. McKeon. “I really have a passion for teaching and I really enjoy it.”

Over time, she and her student researchers have developed the methodology and presented findings to the scientific community in presentations and publications. She uses a capillary electrophoresis instrument, highpowered analytical equipment that she built with parts purchased through grant funding several years ago. She and the students use the equipment to inject one compound at a time to test their interactions with flavonoids, which works well as they develop the new methodology. But as today’s scientists move toward using even more powerful equipment to conduct rapid analysis of much larger sample sizes, the lab-built equipment will no longer be as useful to answer relevant questions as the scope of the research expands.

Microbiologist Dr. Jennifer Kerr is cultivating next-generation scientists equipped to use big data analytics in their research as part of a two-year fellowship, funded by the National Science Foundation. As a fellow in the High-throughput Discovery Science & Inquiry-based Case Studies for Today’s Students (HITS) program, Dr. Kerr is bringing real-world case studies to college students. She is leading the way to develop new biology-based curriculum that provides students with hands-on experience in the high-throughput methods that they need to succeed once they graduate. “This is where science is at right now, and it will just keep going in that direction,” said Dr. Kerr. “Notre Dame recognizes that high-throughput discovery is the next thing, and our students are going to be a part of it.”

There were times when I felt like I should take my shoes off because the ground was so sacred,” she said. “I want people to remember that the service members and families are still in our communities, churches, synagogues, mosques, grocery stores, unemployment lines, VAs, and homeless shelters. We still owe them a huge debt.”

NDMU’s School of Education, in collaboration with the Baltimore City Public Schools, provided free academic support to local students in need starting in fall 2020, helping to boost one school’s attendance rate for distance learning over the district’s average.

Dr. Mouratidis worked with the service members as a psychologist and supported their family members by developing programming, like public education campaigns to help children understand what happened to their parents after they were deployed. Her subsequent research included how blast brain injuries affect psychological health, uncovering clinical solutions to benefit current and future service members.

Through a grant from the Governor’s Emergency Education Relief Fund, the School of Education faculty promoted student success at the John Ruhrah Elementary/Middle School with the Excellence in Remote Instruction Support and Engagement (e-RISE) program. Assistant Professor Patty Silver and vice principal Lauren Watson ‘00, M’06 led the program as partners in NDMU’s professional development school, where education students get their teaching experience.

STUDENT ARTISTS REFLECT THE TIMES Despite remote instruction amid global shutdowns, NDMU’s art galleries continued to provide vibrant educational exhibitions and events that inspired and engaged people in meaningful reflections about living through a year of uncertainty. In the Gormley and Civera galleries, student and professional artists used creative expression to explore the COVID pandemic and social justice movements that defined 2020. Students captured their experiences in the “Art for Unprecedented Times” exhibition, while professional artists tackled similar themes in “Recording History” and “Looking at Leadership.” Virtual gallery events brought together more people than usual, and Dr. Wester plans to continue offering them. In one virtual discussion, artwork from “Looking at Leadership” sparked students’ examination of the role of leaders in uncertain times. “The idea is to do a lot of interdisciplinary exhibitions that are interesting to a lot of different populations across campus and in the community to show that art has a place in everyone’s lives and can

be part of every conversation,” said Dr. Jennifer Wester, gallery director and assistant professor of art history. “It was a really nice way to have students demonstrate how they can use art to process something that we were all going through.”

New OT Doctorate Meets Workforce Needs

Student Named Top MD Teacher Candidate

Expanding opportunities in professional academic programs, NDMU enrolled its first cohort for a newly launched occupational therapy doctorate (OTD) program, making NDMU only the second Maryland school to offer an occupational therapy doctorate.

Honoring her commitment to excellence in student learning, an NDMU education student received the 2020 Distinguished Teacher Candidate Award from the Maryland Association of Teacher Educators.

The full-time degree program is an entry-level pathway for those who want to pursue a career in occupational therapy and meets the growing need for occupational therapists. Within the next decade, the demand for occupational therapists will increase by 16%, with a need for more than 22,000 new professionals. Following Notre Dame’s healthcare educational model, the OTD program coursework goes beyond the textbook, with a strong emphasis on the compassionate care of patients. The 104-credit program is year-round and can be completed in three years. New cohorts will start each fall.

Julie Hipp ’20 showed her dedication to the education profession through her coursework and her teacher internship. The award recognizes teacher candidates who infuse the practice of reflective, responsive teaching into her work in a clinical environment. The association celebrated Julie’s achievement in a virtual ceremony. The Maryland Association of Teacher Educators selects one outstanding teacher candidate for the annual award, based on nominations from colleges and universities around the state.

When the program launched, students just began the 2020-21 academic year with distance learning, and many of them struggled to have access to the internet and tablets at home. The e-RISE program helped students fully engage in their classes by providing free internet hotspots, tablets and headphones, and tutoring using volunteer teachers and college interns. The students’ virtual attendance rate saw a dramatic increase, jumping to 91% in January 2021, which exceeds the average attendance rate in Baltimore City Public Schools. English language learners also saw significant improvements in their proficiency.

COLLABORATIVE AIMS TO HELP EDUCATORS THRIVE Teacher burnout is a widespread problem affecting our nation’s schools. Nearly one in four teachers said they were likely to leave their jobs by the end of the school year, compared to one in six teachers who were likely to leave before the pandemic, according to the 2021 State of the U.S. Teacher Survey. Teachers also experience more frequent job-related stress and symptoms of depression than the general adult population.

FIRST NURSING ENDOWED CHAIR AWARDED FULBRIGHT FELLOWSHIP A nurse researcher, scholar, educator, and social change advocate was named NDMU’s first Frances Kay Pitts ’96 Endowed Chair for Nursing Leadership in Women and Children’s Health and awarded a prestigious Fulbright Fellowship to conduct research in Thailand in summer 2021. Dr. Tina Bloom joined the faculty at NDMU’s School of Nursing as an associate professor with more than 25 years of experience in the nursing profession. Her research focuses on intimate partner violence and its impact on maternal stress, pregnancy, children, and parenting. She also has worked with undergraduate and graduate students in and outside of the classroom. The endowed chair was established in 2014 through a generous gift from the Pitts Family Foundation and Kay and Jim Pitts. Kay Pitts is an NDMU nursing graduate, who has dedicated her career to excellence in the healthcare of women and children as a Registered Nurse and Certified Nurse Midwife.

Pharmacy Grads Get Top Placements & Awards Fourteen graduates from NDMU’s School of Pharmacy class of 2021 distinguished themselves by landing competitive residencies and fellowships, and four won prestigious industry and academic awards.

PBS DOCUMENTARY FEATURES NDMU PHARMACY A nationally broadcast PBS documentary aimed at ending vaccination misinformation highlights NDMU pharmacy experts and students with other leading healthcare advocates. Dr. Anne Lin, dean of the NDMU School of Pharmacy and a national voice on healthcare access, joins retired Rear Admiral and former Assistant Surgeon General Pamela Schweitzer and Baltimore Commissioner of Health Letitia Dzirasa in the “Vaccination from the Misinformation Virus.” Two additional NDMU pharmacy faculty – Drs. Matthew Shimoda, associate dean for student affairs and associate professor of clinical & administrative sciences, and Ashley Moody, an assistant professor of clinical & administrative services – also appear in the film.

ACCELERATED NURSING PROGRAM GETS MEDIA COVERAGE With the launch of the hybrid accelerated, second-degree Bachelor of Science in Nursing (ABSN) program, NDMU’s School of Nursing faculty and students enjoyed extensive media coverage, as hospitals in Maryland and around the nation struggled with a historic demand for nurses. All four local Baltimore TV networks, plus the Baltimore Business Journal, ran stories about how NDMU is taking the lead to address the nursing shortage. Opened in September 2020, the hybrid ABSN Learning Site at Elkridge expanded the School of Nursing’s reach to attract students to the 15-month program.

At the Elkridge location, new students can enroll in the program three times per year and receive their nursing instruction through an online format, with in-person clinical skills training in an on-site state-of-the-art simulation lab. NDMU’s Baltimore campus ABSN enrolls new students once a year and provides in-person nursing instruction and clinical skills training in the campus simulation lab. NDMU’s innovative ABSN program is filling a dire need in Maryland and beyond to graduate highly educated professional registered nurses to provide expert, compassionate care.

Created by Emmy Award-winning producer and director Chris Schueler, the hourlong film provides accurate information about how vaccines work and save lives. In the film, Dr. Lin explains the vital role of pharmacists to provide individuals in their communities with much needed health information and services, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. “When physician offices closed during the pandemic, pharmacies didn’t close because where else are people going to go?” said Dr. Lin. “The closest person they can find that’s a healthcare provider when everything is shut down is a pharmacist. Everybody lives within five miles of a pharmacy. So, we’re accessible, and we’re knowledgeable.”

I GAINED SO MUCH Helen Liu ’69 first learned about Notre Dame as a high school student in Seoul, Korea, where she grew up in a Chinese community. Her teachers encouraged her to attend a U.S. College because of her outstanding grades. But she feared her parents may be leery of her going so far from their watchful eyes. The more Helen learned about Notre Dame’s values and teaching approach, the more she knew it would be the best place for her.

“When I was four and my sister was three, I have recollections of my mom bringing us down on the train to her reunion,” she said. “The nuns babysat us, while my mom went to her reunion. I still remember smelling incense in the chapel.”

After spending 40 years as an educator and administrator, she returned to the School of Education and works with student interns. On her desk sits a picture of Jean Marie as a Notre Dame senior and student intern. When Janice Davis ’92 decided to return to school to pursue her degree, only one college stood out for her. As a married mother of a 15-year-old boy and a full-time professional, she enrolled in the Weekend College for a bachelor’s degree in communication arts.

“It was a bit of an inspiration for my son to see how hard I was working and how dedicated I was. For a child to see their parent in that role, they think, ‘Well, gee, I’m not the only one who has to go to school,’” she said. “I just had such a great experience there. It was just such a great fit.” Her experience as a student transformed her life. It also laid the foundation for her continued support of the University as a donor and volunteer. After years of loyal giving to the Notre Dame Fund, she got an invitation to join the Montrose Society, whose members commit to make legacy gifts to the University. Her heart of service led her to volunteer on the Legacy Giving Committee, recruiting others to consider legacy giving. “There are so many people who have the brains and the stick-to-itiveness to make it,” she said. “I just think that if you have any capacity to give, then pay it forward to try to give other people some of the same chances you had.” Janice and her husband recently decided to invest in the growing success of NDMU’s new art therapy program – Maryland’s first such bachelor’s and master’s degree program. Finding a new way to support Notre Dame's students deepened her connection to the University’s mission. “I know the value of art and arts education. It humanizes people and opens so many doors,” she said. “It’s a window or a path into people who are suffering in a lot of ways. I think this program will help people to find those paths.”

“When I first arrived at Notre Dame, it felt like being in a large family. The SSNDs and many fellow students in Meletia Hall helped me with the transition,” she said. “During my first year, a few sophomores and juniors in the dorm offered to tutor me in English because it was a second language. Their kindness and generosity really touched me greatly. Today, five decades later, I have the desire to help some local middle school students.”

She never forgot the science professor who took extra time with her to make sure she learned how to effectively prepare for labs. Her excellent academic preparation led Helen to later earn a master’s degree in biochemistry.

A loyal donor to the Notre Dame Fund, Helen stays in regular contact with three of her Notre Dame friends and has attended nearly all of her reunions every five years, including her 50th reunion in 2019. “Having Notre Dame as an important part of my life is a blessing,” she said. “Over the past five decades, I am so grateful to have kept in touch with my small Notre Dame circle.”

Carolyn Donohue ’86, M’89 discovered a real passion for learning at Notre Dame. For about 20 years, Carolyn has participated in classes at Notre Dame’s Renaissance Institute, a continuing education program for learners ages 50 and over.

After her retirement, Carolyn returned to Notre Dame and joined the Renaissance Institute. In addition to taking classes, she especially enjoys the institute’s educational and social excursions to museums and restaurants around Baltimore.

Jan Kilar ’03 and her husband Dennis have always been generous. They have given to various causes over the years, but during the COVID pandemic, they re-evaluated their priorities.

Her positive experience as a Weekend College student and later, as a graduate student, at Notre Dame defined her view of her own abilities.

“They have a lot of activities like museum trips and restaurant outings, so there’s lots of opportunities to form friendships. It’s a great program,” she said.

“I just had such a pleasant experience at the college,” she said. “The instructors cared about us. They would coach you along with your assignments if you were having problems. I realized that this is possible: you can have a full-time job and a family and still do this, so it just motivated me to stay on.”

Thirty-five years after her graduation with a bachelor’s degree, Carolyn’s Notre Dame story is still being written. She continues to thrive at the place that gave her the confidence and motivation to realize her dreams in education.

Her love for Notre Dame grew while she pursued a master’s degree in business. In graduate school, she found the students to be just as encouraging as the professors. “We were all at a point in our lives where we had pretty busy jobs,” she said. “If one of us missed a class, somebody else would record it for us. We just helped each other in that way.” She will never forget how that support made such a difference in helping her to succeed. Notre Dame’s warm environment inspires Carolyn’s desire to give to the university today.

PAYING IT FORWARD Candice Thompson ’03 decided early in life to dedicate her life to service. She joined the U.S. Army in her senior year of high school. Because she lost her stepfather to lung cancer when she was only 9 years old, she decided to study biology. Notre Dame prepared her to make a difference in the world. “I knew that I needed to help people and what influences our health,” she said. “At Notre Dame, I learned how to turn that initial passion into continuing education and work options.”

After graduation, Candice’s passion for service led her to re-enlist in the Army and become a commissioned officer. Most recently, she has served as a commander of a medical unit that was one of the first in Maryland to support communities with COVID-19 testing in March 2020. Enjoying successful military and civilian careers has positioned Candice to give back to the next generation of Notre Dame students who have a passion to use their gifts to impact the world.

Gators Go Undefeated to Win Second-Straight Championship Building on the momentum from their last season, the women’s lacrosse team went undefeated in the regular season to capture its second straight championship in the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) in spring 2021. The #FearlessGators defended their conference title on Alumnae Field against the Wilson College Phoenix. Their victory was especially sweet after the team missed the 2020 season, which the CSAC cancelled due to the COVID

pandemic. The Gators advanced to the NCAA Division III Tournament and were selected by the division committee to skip the first round because of their stellar performance all season long. The Gators lost to 11th ranked Ithaca in the tournament’s second round. The Gators dominated every game they played in 2021, and their hard work paid off. Ten student-athletes took home a total of 12 CSAC season awards, including three of the top four major

IMPRINT Helps Students Track Leadership Growth The IMPRINT program engages Women’s College students at NDMU in intentional reflection on their leadership development from freshman year until graduation. IMPRINT is an umbrella initiative that encompasses multiple NDMU academic and co-curricular activities and experiences, building on the results of faculty-led research of what women need to be successful personally and professionally in the 21st century. Despite remote instruction, students attended more than 50 IMPRINT events from career fairs to panel discussions, which targeted at least one of the four IMPRINT pillars: personal leadership; mentorship & sponsorship; global awareness of diversity & inclusion; and

individual awards. Senior Michaela Seay earned CSAC Defensive Player of the Year, freshman Sara Morales grabbed CSAC Rookie of the Year, and head coach Kari-Lei Berry got CSAC Coach of the Year. Sophomore Jaime Ballard was also selected for the 2021 All-CSAC First Team. Senior Marie Salas ranked in the top ten nationally for her goalkeeping. The 2020-21 Gators Athletics season brought plenty of achievements to celebrate.

When they collect 10 badges in all four pillars, students achieve IMPRINT Scholar designation and a special citation at commencement. In just one semester, some were on track to reach that goal. Dr. Kate Bossert, an associate English professor and one of IMPRINT’s co-chairs, said reflection is an important part of the program. Students have embraced the honest self-assessment needed to fully acquire new leadership skills. “It has provided a concrete way for them to understand their own growth,” she said. “That’s what makes IMPRINT distinctive to the Notre Dame experience.”

What attracted you to Notre Dame?

What do you love about Notre Dame now?

One of the things that drew me to the school were the progressive academics. For a small school, there were so many cool classes and majors. I was actually an interdisciplinary biology and psychology major. That influenced me greatly. After I went to medical school, I completed a combined residency in internal medicine and psychiatry.

My best friends to this day are people who I met at Notre Dame. It’s really nice to have a strong group of women leaders who I went to school with and who are all over the country now doing great things. We were all future oriented. There were no limits on us at that time. We have this common bond coming back to the college. It was really an inspiring time in our lives.

What educational experiences made the biggest impact?

“We really had the sense that we could be worldchangers.” A Women’s College graduate, Kelly met her best friends on campus and discovered her perfect career path and spirit of service. She now practices addictions psychiatry to reach the underserved and teaches psychiatry to medical students. A 2019 inductee to the Notre Dame Sports Hall of Fame, she gained lifelong lessons as a student-athlete that she carried into her professional life.

Being able to do research at the National Institute on Drug Abuse inspired me to pursue a career in psychiatry. I was a student under Dr. Jon Stanton in the Psychology Department. He had a connection there. Having that opportunity was really profound for me. So, it gave me a lot of confidence in applying to medical school. I felt like it was uniquely positioned for me coming from this school.

What lessons did you gain from being a student-athlete? On the soccer and basketball teams, I had the opportunity to be coached by many great leaders here. They taught us resiliency, how to cope with losing, and how to identify through constructive criticism what we could have done better. They did not miss an opportunity to incorporate that in every game. They would take all of those life lessons and say, ‘This is what’s going to happen in your work life once you graduate from here.’ All of those life lessons stayed with me through my educational life and my work life. I think about them all the time.

REUNION 2020 More than 250 alumnae and alumni joined us from around the world to celebrate Virtual Reunion 2020. The three days of events were a terrific opportunity to see friends and classmates in a new and innovative way to connect. The need to pivot was handled with grace and understanding from our incredible Reunion Committee, and they helped make all of our events a huge success, including a virtual celebration of NDMU’s 125th anniversary and the broadcast of the Reunion Mass with Montrose Society Appreciation. Your participation made all the difference!

2020 Award Winners Giving is a significant part of showing up at Reunion. Why? Because the more individuals who support Notre Dame financially, the higher our community's chances are of receiving grants, showing the strength of our alumnae and alumni community to perspective students, and overall, supporting current students' needs. My focus in particular was on treating the underserved and being in an area of service. I felt like I could identify those issues, and if I set my mind to it, I could make a difference.

In Memoriam Sister Mary Dolorosa Bundy ’62, whose teaching ministry took her to Chicago, Detroit and New Orleans, passed away Nov. 16, 2020. She was a member of the Oblate Sisters of Providence. She crocheted, wrote calligraphy, and decorated the gift shop at the Oblate Sisters’ convent. Patricia Virginia Byrd Kelly ‘54 passed away Sept. 4, 2020. She volunteered with Right to Life of Maryland, which earned her honors from the Maryland Catholic Conference, Catholic Bishops of Maryland, and Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Washington’s Legislative Network. Elizabeth (Cleary) McGinty ’63, a retired litigator, passed away May 12, 2021. She attended law school at night, while working as an IRS revenue officer. THE FINAL WORD Investing in Student Success

At Notre Dame of Maryland University, we believe that having diverse nurse leaders really impacts health outcomes. We have a pool of nursing faculty and administrators who are committed to social justice on every level–and eliminating health disparities. We must have people who represent the most vulnerable at the table making decisions and bringing up hard conversations. Nurse leaders need to be people who individuals trust, who look like them and speak their language. If we really want to address health outcomes fully and eliminate disparities, this is one key intervention toward doing that.

In 2017, NDMU’s School of Nursing received a three-year, $493,593 Nurse Support Program II Competitive Institutional Grant, administered by Maryland Higher Education Commission and funded by Maryland Health Service Cost Review Commission. Our program aimed to increase the number of diverse nurses who are moving into leadership positions. Data suggest that a disproportion exists between the number of minority nurses earning advanced degrees versus the number who obtain leadership positions post-graduation. Often nurses, particularly those from underrepresented minority groups, find it difficult to envision themselves as potential leaders. Our focus was to develop programming and resources for students to begin to view themselves as leaders: Recruit diverse nurses. First, we focused heavily on recruiting underrepresented minority nurses. You need diverse faculty to recruit diverse nurses. Your school has to reflect who you want to bring in, and I think we do a really good job of that. We also have long-standing academic partnerships with area hospitals, with the nurse leaders and nurse educators. Our partners encouraged their staff, especially minority nurses, to apply to our program because our faculty would tap into their strengths and talents as potential leaders in nursing and healthcare. Address working professionals’ needs. We supported an academic advisor who was dedicated to this group to address their unique needs. Most of our students are professionals and come to NDMU after work. Many have childcare issues. Some work multiple jobs and may not have much social support. The advisor is able to hone in and determine what challenges existed. She communicates with faculty to ask, “What can we do to assist these students to be successful?” Strengthen mentorship networks. Networking and mentoring are major factors in promoting the

success of aspiring nurse leaders. We have supported students to join professional organizations, including the National Black Nurses Association and the Maryland Nurses Association. We supported their attendance at professional conferences, trying to increase their comfort level to mingle in leadership groups. If they are active in nursing leadership as a student, then they are more at ease when they actually become a leader. Facilitate peer support. We started a monthly book club that we opened up to all of nursing students, but we made special efforts to invite underrepresented Master of Science in Nursing students. We gave them the book and broke them up into small groups. Students, faculty, and staff from the School of Nursing participated. Students appreciated experiencing a sense of community with faculty, staff, and their peers, and we know with minority nurses that is really important. We wanted the students to bond and create their own sense of community throughout the program and post-graduation.

Sustaining Our Momentum Because of Notre Dame’s mission, we were able to develop a program that promotes diverse nurse leadership to address health outcomes of the entire community. Although the grant period is over and our learning environment looks a little different, our focus on supporting our students remains the same. We continue to maintain many of the program aspects that were successful and received praise from students. At Notre Dame, we believe that nurses and nurse leadership must reflect the face of the country. We have to be a voice at the table. Dr. Sabita Persaud serves as an associate professor in NDMU’s School of Nursing. She specializes in the area of community/public health nursing education, with a specific focus on vulnerable populations and issues facing underrepresented minorities. She recently served as president of the Maryland Board of Nursing and was named one of Maryland’s 2018 Top 100 Women by The Daily Record.
