My dear Graduates, It seems just a short while ago that your class first entered Notre Dame Academy. You were ninety-five bewildered freshmen from various parishes, cities, and states seeking a high school education.

God had called you here as to a garden--Mary's garden--where you were to grow in knowledge and virtue. And as individual plants you absorbed whatever you wished. It was up to you to gain the spiritual, mental, social, and cultural benefits which are yours now to carry

throughout life.

Each year some plants were transplanted to other soils--other schools; new ones were added. Some abandoned the goal which you sought; a high school diploma did not seem important. But you persevered. And then in your senior year the heavenly Gardener came to pluck four of His flowers and took them to His garden of eternity. Only He knew why. Thus the number dwindled to sixty-six, but even so yours is the

distinction of being the largest class in the school's history. time has come when you are to be transplanted into adult where society you are to bring forth fruits of sanctification. You are to be leaders of others in families, schools, offices, factories, and share with them the benefits of your Catholic education.

Have you considered the priceless blessings which have been yours in associating with Catholic girls from good Catholic families? The friendships formed during these years will not be easily forgotten. By word and example you have influenced each other in studies, recreation, and prayer. How fortunate you were to be instructed by teachers whose lives were dedicated to the education and training of youth! For you they had sacrificed the joys and pleasures that could have been theirs in the world. Their prayers were for you here, and they will follow you when you leave on your chosen path of life.

Read again the dedication in this annual. Do you remember hearing these words on our first Blessed Alix Day, October 28, 1960?

Remember this message, dear graduates. Be loyal to your Alma Mater. May the Spirit ofChrist and His Mother inspire you to lead lives in keeping with your womanly dignity and the training representative of a Catholic high school graduate.

THE LIGHT ETERNAL

Into a medium—size town comes Marie Stafford to open a school of elocution, piano and voice. She boards with the O'Brien family. The community gossiper, Mrs. Conway, at first is curious, and then begins to suspect Marie is hiding something from the good townspeople. Her suspicions are confirmed when her son finds in the studio an unsealed letter which Mrs. Conway spreads. Miss Stafford appeals to Father Nolan, the young parish priest. Marie tells him the moving, dramatic story of her life. She was married and after many years of suffering from an abusive husband, she came to this town and opened a studio under her professional name. She had been a loyal, self-sacrificing wife but had been unable to make her husband see " the light." During the scene, a violent thunder and lightning storm rages, and through the window comes James Nolan, a derelict. He is her husband and has traced her to this place. He also turns out to be the brother of Father Nolan. In a tremendous scene wherein James defies all beliefs, he is struck by lightning and his sight is destroyed. How Father Nolan and Marie bring him into the pathway of God and even though blind, he sees the light eternal, makes one of the most powerful, tender and beautiful scenes ever written into a play.
